Magic. Magi. The arcane arts. Whatever you want to call it, History has been littered with many tales and folklore regarding people gifted with magical prowess. And while many of these tales were just fabrications, some were most certainly true. Throughout history, Mankind has been split into two kinds: Those who possess magical talent, and those who do not.
Back before recorded history, when Mankind started to form the first primitive settlements and villages, the magi and non-magi got along to start with. Both relied on one another to survive. But as the non-magi began to grow in number, and the number of magi remained stagnant. The non-magi started to distrust the magi; the exact reason has been lost to time. What happened next was nothing less than attempted genocide. Over the next hundred or so years, the magi population was dwindled down and down, until eventually only a few scarce remnants remained, all hiding in secret.
In order to protect themselves the magi formed The Guild: a sort of proto-government designed to isolate themselves from the non-magi and ensure enforcement of the Magical Anonymity Mandate. The pact was designed to restrict the use of magic around non-magi, as well as do everything in their power to prevent the non-magi from discovering the existence of magic. The plan worked perfectly, and as time went on people began to forget about what magic was, until it became the first folk story in recorded history.
All was not peaceful in the world of the magi however. While the majority of the magical society was perfectly content with the self imposed isolation, a certain group of people had started to take a different, more radical view. The isolation had made them resent the non-magi. That resentment then turned into hatred and sparked the belief that the magi were far more superior to the non-magi. Eventually these misguided souls banded together and formed Corpus: The society to guide magi to dominate the world. The Guild knew that they couldn’t allow this kind of extremism to gain traction. So, the only option left to The Guild was to root these heretics out. The result was actually full scale war.
The war dragged on for almost a decade. Many lives were lost and friendships destroyed. It almost seemed as if the whole of Magi kind was on the brink of extinction. However, The Guild were able to pull themselves together under the leadership of Sawa Laur De Silva. With Corpus no longer terrorising the fragile state of Magi kind, The Guild grew stronger, eventually crowning Sawa as the first leader of The Guild. Over the next thousand years The Guild continued to enforce the Magical Anonymity Mandate.
As time moved on, four powerful lineages began to rise: De Silva, Leighton, Rushika, Louis. These four powerful families vied for power, each one rising to the top position, only to be toppled centuries later. By the 19th century however, the De Silva family had managed to solidify their position and since then, have single-handedly ran the Guild, creating in the process the single most powerful bloodline ever known. Our story takes place in 2016, where trouble has been brewing for the past few years and the world of the magi is in trouble once again.
Scholars have tried over and over again throughout the ages to pinpoint the exact reason or trait that makes the magi the way they are. There were investigations into many theory: were magi born under a certain star? (always a popular one), was it their physicality?, maybe it was because of some water they drank?
Regardless of whatever theory you want to believe the reasons and origins of magic have been lost. The only unifying symbol of Magi is the tattoo-like birthmark that they are each born with. The word birthmark is kind of a con however as a baby isn't born with this birthmark, it develops. Every birthmark starts as a small star shaped freckle which appears at birth. As they grow up and become stronger, the tattoo starts to form growing, expanding and becoming clearer, until their sixteenth birthday where it will be fully formed.
As for the types of magic that is another difficult subject. There have been many attempts to try and classify the fields of magic over history. Below is the most recent and widely accepted attempt:
Elemental: Your classical wind, fire, water etc magic. One of the most common fields and also the easiest to learn. Don't mistake that for being weak however, a large number of Guild leaders have been elementals. As for the types of elements… Let's just say the debate is still open on that one.
Example Classes: Pyromage, Hydromage, Aerotheurgist, Stormmage
Physical: A most bizarre field of magic. Physical magic is split into melee and ranged types. Melee physical users tend to be able to add extra kinetic energy to their punches, while ranged fighters can throw balls of energy capable of knocking people back. A very useful non lethal form of magic. Of course it can be lethal if the user intends it to be. As they grow, they also tend to be able to create physical shields of varying types to protect people from harm.
Example Classes: Warrior Mage, Kineticist, Shieldmage.
Deception: Remember when you thought someone was watching you, but you turn around to find no one there? Odds are there was someone there and you have fallen prey to deception magic. While not usually lethal in itself, deception magi excel at finding other ways to get people to hurt themselves. Afterall, why bloody up your expensive $1000 dress when you can just get your victim to kill themselves for you?
Example Classes: Shadowmage, Shrieker, Illusionist.
Manipulation: There has been a long debate over the existence of manipulation magic. And to some extent there still is. Manipulation magic is a hybrid of both deception and physical magics and most commonly manifests itself as telekinesis. The argument has always been around whether telekinesis was physical or deception. So it ended up getting its own place. Though more has been added over time to give it a more concrete basis.
Example Classes: Telekinetic, Windbreaker, Atomist.
The Forbidden Magics: Just as it says in the title this class hides all the magics that the world should not know. Most have been lost to time and very few people actually know how to cast anything remotely to do with forbidden arts. They are forbidden for a reason.
Example Classes: Necromancer, Chronomage, Bloodmage. [/sub]
[sub]Today, The Guild has evolved into a global law enforcement group. The Guild is split up into several operational areas: The Americas, Europe, Africa etc and each area has its own leader, HQ and the like. For the most part these branches are autonomous, however one of the operational leaders is known as the Primus Magi and has the say over everything and anything in the magical world. Since the early 19th Century the Primus Magi has always been from the De Silva family. This has in turn created a powerful bloodline and now some people have resorted to changing the leadership title to Demi-God. And in some respects they aren't wrong.
Each of the region leaders are responsible for enforcing the will of the Primus Magi as well as keeping conformity to the Magical Anonymity Mandate. How they do so is generally upto them. Once every year all the leaders meet up at HQ for a big meeting, to talk and discuss issues in the realm of the magi. They also convene whenever it is time to crown a new Primus Magi.
The Guilds current HQ region is The Americas, moved from Europe in 1939 for obvious reasons. Since then it has been based out of New York in a deep underground campus. The current leader is Salem De Silva. Though more on her shortly.
Once upon a time there was a little girl named Salem, daughter of the leader of The Guild. The law of The Guild had a bizarre inheritance rule where females inherited first, mostly because magic sewed to be stronger in females. Because of this, Salem was being groomed to become the Primus Magi after her father retired.
During her time in high school, Salem started to become friends with Aloysius Leighton, the young heir to the Leighton lineage who just so happened to be in the same year as Salem. Over time, these two ended up become something rival/couple. They would train in secret, though that training usually ended up in full scale fighting. Not that either of them minded. But it seemed that with connected power and punch, the pair grew closer together.
At age sixteen Aloysius intended to take The Guild entrance exam and join up. This wasn’t unusual, afterall it was expected that all of the great families heirs would be enlisted into The Guild. It was around this time however that Salem’s father had finally discovered the little romance between Salem and Aloysius. He was rightfully pretty angry at this. In the past, it was common for males to marry females from other families, produce a child and then use that child to take over and switch the lineage. While this had not happened in a long time, Salem’s father didn’t want to take the risk.
At the same time, the peace had to be kept, so killing Aloysius was off the table. Instead it was decided to reject his application to The Guild on ‘Mental Stability’ grounds and forbade Salem to see Aloysius again. Naturally this angered Aloysius mother and Aloysius himself became quite depressed, though it was more heartbreak than depression. Aloysius’s mother on the other hand could see what was going on. Trying to wiggle the Leighton name out of the spotlight, and she was having none of it. She was far too old, and unskilled for that matter, to be able to do something. That didn’t mean that Aloysius couldn’t though.
So, His mother pulled him out of school and began to ‘convince’ him to rise up against the De Silva’s and take power back for the Leighton lineage. From this moment on the Dark Shadow was born with Aloysius as its leader.
For the first couple of years, the Dark Shadow did nothing special. It never outright attacked The Guild and for the most part, both sides left each other alone. Aloysius was busy building the Dark Shadow up, trying to find members who were sympathetic of his cause. Meanwhile back at The Guild Salem was starting to consolidate and create her own power. While it would still be a few good years, if not longer for her father to retire, it was always good to start building your power ready for when ascension came.
There was one issue however: Salem wanted the second in command position, It was kind of a unspoken rule that the heir became second in command when they were of age. The current second; Rebecca Touson, refused to give up her place. She had fought hard to get where she was and she wasn’t about to give it up to some blue haired princess. Salem was very resourceful on the other hand, and she devised a plan that allowed her to take the seat from right under Rebecca’s nose. Speaking to her father, Salem managed to convince him to send Rebecca on a infiltration mission to the Dark Shadow. With Rebecca out of the picture, Salem could take her rightful place and all was good.
Except it wasn’t. Rebecca found out that it was Salem who had told her father to send her on this mission; to infiltrate the Dark Shadow, seduce Aloysius and get him to give up, or kill him, whichever was easier. Rebecca did her job, she managed to infiltrate, work her way up to second in command and then seduce Aloysius. That was where Rebecca put her own plan in motion. She convinced Aloysius to attack The Guild and kill Salem and her father. Her plan worked, and a week later Aloysius and the Dark Shadow launched an attack on The Guild Headquarters.
The attack was a mixed blessing. Aloysius was able to defeat Salem’s father but, Salem arrived and was on the warpath, and it looked like she was about to kill Aloysius during the retreat. Salem had managed to find out through some spies in the Dark Shadow that Rebecca was the one behind the attack plan. So during the chaos of Aloysius’s retreat order, Salem aimed her powers at Rebecca and not Aloysius, murdering her on the spot. From Aloysius’s point of view, it looked like the woman he loved died to save him.
This upset at the loss of another person he loved (Salem from her father and Rebecca from murder) caused Aloysius to deep underground and grieve. He believed that he was a cursed man and that he deserved nobody. Meanwhile, Salem had been confirmed into power and had started Operation: Retribution, an all out assault on every Dark Shadow hideout they could find. This eventually led to the Salem Witch Trials (More Here) and ultimately the destruction of the Dark Shadow. At the age of twenty two Salem had become the most successful Guild Leader in modern history, being both the youngest leader ever as well as crushing a major insurrection.
It has been several years since the fall of the Dark Shadow. Aloysius resurfaced just over a year ago and has been quietly trying to rebuild his organisation. Salem on the other hand is closely keeping an eye on the situation while trying to keep the peace within the Guild and with the Magi. Some say a second war is brewing but no one can be certain.
This is where you come in. Who will you be and where will you allegiances lie?
Hopefully you have made it this far, and if you have, great! Thank you. I hope you are interested in this RP. This universe has been a labour of love that i have been working on for the past 8 years on and off. Several times I have tried to use this concept and never truly worked out, something was always wrong. However this version (and the one previous) is the best iteration yet, so i encourage to come join in.
But first some housekeeping:
IC Rules
- RP 101: No Godmodding. Simples. Shouldn’t have to repeat that one again.
- Feel free to jump in and out with Posts. However please don’t start posting an entire pages worth of posts one after the other. If you are going to be having a long, quick flowing convo, Take it a Collab.
- Ontop of this, please try to allow everyone else to post before you post again. This isn’t a strict rule so much as a guideline.
Post length is minimum two paragraphs. Again, not a strict rule so don’t worry about it. If you are getting stuck you can always come and ask for help. I don’t bite. ( Ask @HaleyTheRandom & @SouffleGirl123 ) - Post frequency is currently set at two weeks. We all have lives. If we speed up we speed up, but preferably I don’t wanna slow down any more than that.
- There will be battles. There will be violence. People will die. If death comes for your character, take it in your stride. Death scenes can be one of those defining moments in the RP that takes a 'A' RP to a 'AAA' RP. You are more than welcome to make another character and jump right in again.
OOC Rules
- Don’t be a dick. That’s it really. Keep drama at the door and all will be good. I won’t be held accountable to what happens to people who break this rule.
- In the event of me sleeping, or just not being around, @HaleyTheRandom & @SouffleGirl123 are in charge, whichever one of them gets to you first.
