@Artifex I kinda forgot to ask properly, is it fine if my character has dreams of visiting the other realms and uses them to later find and establish a link to a summoned creature? Kinda like astral projection, in a sense.
Name | Margarett Leslie Abbot Age | 19 Gender | Female Level/Tier | Virtuoso 1 House | Machina Appearance/Attire | Margarett's figure is that of a fine lady: slender and tall with long, smooth hair. Most of her height comes from her legs, a trait shared with her mother's side of the family, which can give her much more of a refined image at times. However, such an image is betrayed by her facial features. Cute as a button, she has a round face with big blue eyes that threaten to swallow the world before her whole. With a small nose and a bright smile, it's almost as if she was trying her darnest to infect everyone else with her enthusiasm with her every expresison.
Alignment | Vigilante
Personality/Habits | An oddball around Machina students, Margarett's unusually outspoken and enthusiastic; one could even say childish. Often with her mind in the clouds, she's a strong believer in the existance of extraterrestrial life whilst holding her ground that ghosts and the such aren't real, her rebuttal when summons are used as a counter-argument being a childish notion that saying that is "cheating". However, her position within that house is well deserved in the end: Whilst she has a notoriously short attention span, she's a savant when it comes to riddle and puzzle solving. She thoroughly enjoys solving enigmas to the point where she tends to make a big deal out of most common situations, overcomplicating common tasks for the thrill of doing so. Optimistic and cheerful, Margarett's always aching to go out on an adventure with those she considers her friends, most of the time dragging people to go on as their assistants when she's "solving a mystery". However, she's also rather naive at the end of the day and, despite being a mathematical and logical powerhouse at times, she's still short-sighted and impulsive, prone to act on behalf of her own emotions rather than logic and practicality.
Once upon a time there were two students: Jacob Abbot and Marianne DuPont. Both of them were members of L'Mordryn of differing houses. He was a studious Machina, and she was a jolly Bestia. Their union was odd by some, but they fit together rather well. A bit too well, in fact, as during their studies she got pregnant and both of them chose to leave the academy in order to take care of their future child. An action that earned the scorn of both of their families, and severed their ties with them. Things were going well, and they settled in the suburban London to welcome this new child within their lives until disaster struck. The reasons of why this happened are still unknown to both of them, and they would rather not know about it, but Marianne had a miscarriage. With no family to ever speak to them, and with the light that drove them onwards to this path having fizzled out, they continued with their lives for several years until they decided to try again. And, this time, Margarett was conceived and brought to the world to two overjoyed parents. She was raised and nurtured with much love, she was taught to be kind whilst her soft parents couldn't bring themselves to tell her "no". So, when little Margarett asked to read about detective stories of the time, even if they had dead bodies in them, they couldn't refuse her requests and simply made sure that she'd focus on other things. A thing they did well, as her next requests would be a deerstalker hat and a magnifying glass to look at stuff more closely.
One day, however, her world would be flipped upside down as a tall and smiling figure made his way to her middle-class housing: Ferdinand DuPont. Her maternal uncle, and a fellow outcast of the family that had only just now received the news that her sister was pushed away from the family away. Hellbent on giving the middle finger to those uppity folks that called themselves the DuPont Bloodline, he moved to London and offered himself the position of Margarett's Tutor in Ars Invocatio. A man worthy of his own tale, Ferdinand DuPont had reached a high level within L'Mordryn as a member of the House Machina until he quit to pursue greener pastures after something flipped a switch in his mind. A very different man from the straight-laced fellow he was before, he was quick to win Margarett's admiration when displaying his capability of summoning otherwordly machines. After a reluctant display from both of her parents, the three of them explained the nature of Ars Invocatio and eventually agreed that, whilst Ferdinand was very odd, he was a very talented Invoker at the end of the day and more than qualified to teach a ten year old Margarett the basics of the craft so that she could enter L'Mordryn to pursue those studies. And so, her tutelage began. She would visit her uncle two days per week for several years to deepen her knowledge on a variety of subjects, even when more often than not he'd take the part of a generous uncle and take her on outings her parents deemed too dangerous. However, that wasn't all. One thing of him stuck to her the most about her uncle, and that was a single poster on his living room that she asked about when she was thirteen. A single poster, drawn in pastel colours and simplistic in design. Four words: "I Want To Believe" From there on, she'd visit him much more often and learn about his crazy theories about aliens existing in the world. Secret groups operating under the shadows and manipulating the events of the world. Tibetans living in the center of the earth. Missing cows. With one of Ferdinand's invocations serving as the voice of reason that made sense to all the raw information he poured into her.
Eventually, though, the time for Margarett to finally join L'Modryn Academy had come, and she waved goodbye to her family. She had just turned 15 when she reached Tyro and began to adapt to this new life within the school. Developing a familiarity to her uncle's summoning technique, she entered Machina after demonstrating an affinity to Outer-World summonings like the ones Ferdinand routinely demonstrated to her during her tutelage. She'd routinely send letters back home to keep in touch with her family and received regular responses from her mother and dad. From her uncle, however, she only received one. At her 18th birthday, two weeks before her final exam to reach a level of Virtuoso, a single envelope with an odd emblem was handed to her. Inside of it there were a couple of things: two letters and a photograph. The photograph was one she asked her uncle to take with her before she went to L'Modryn, a request he oddly accepted despite his belief that his soul was better left within him rather than in one of those strange gizmos. There were three beings in the photograph: Margarett, Ferdinand, and his servant and assistant. The first letter was Ferdinand congratulating Margarett on her progress on L'Modryn, having heard of what she was doing from her parents whilst admitting he had nailed his mailbox for "personal motives". He then said that, now that she was of age, per DuPont traditions she was to pass a small test or else she'd be banished from the family. Then he said that it was bullshit and that she should focus on getting to the highest level she could whilst doing what she liked. Finally, the second letter was Ferdinand's gift: an admittedly roundabout series of steps she had to follow during her exam to both pass and "receive what [Ferdinand] prepared for [her]". Ferdinand then stated that she shouldn't never ever do it before the exam, or else bad things would happen. On the fateful day, Margarett repeated the steps exactly as described and, to both her surprise and everyone else's, a tall entity now stood before her. A tall being that she had known during her childhood, but never really spoke with. A gentleman that endured her infantile behaviors to the very end, with a nearly unlimited patience. That's when she understood what Ferdinand had given her. Before her stood Cogsworth, the personal aide of Ferdinand DuPont and one of his closest and most cherished invocations. After an admittedly shameful moment of her breaking into joyful tears in front of everyone, she managed to pass the exam and began her treading the rest of her journey in L'Mordryn alongside the caretaker her uncle had sent to look after her.
@CelesteEste Like lucid dreaming on a magical level. That sounds like a cool ability. Sounds good to me.
@Hammerman In terms of the RP, we'll say that a summon could roam the full extent of the school grounds on its own. Any further and the link would start to weaken. (I hope that's what you meant >_>)
Maybe we should make like, an excel sheet to help us figure out the possibility of being roomies with others. I am open to that, seems like it could be fun, if any Bestia is interested.
Name | Alebard (AL-e-bard) Aulric Age | 16 Gender | male Level/Tier | Adept, Tier 2 House | Dracona Appearance/Attire | Alebard stands at a somewhat impressive 6'4" in height with olive-tone skin that has a healthy tan due to spending much of his time outside. He sports a thick mop of hair that is somewhere between golden blond and platinum blond in color with a few strands of a more red color scattered through the unruly mass. Overall, the lighter color of his hair compliments his darker skin tone nicely, but it's tendency to tangle and it's propensity toward disorder cause no end of frustration to Alebard. Below his disheveled mop, Alebard's face is fairly angular with bright, sapphire blue eyes; a narrow, long nose; and a well-defined, rigid jaw. He has a slender, somewhat athletic build, but with little visible muscle, but he is stronger than his apparent lack of muscle would lead most to believe. For clothes, Alebard tends to dress simply in light, somewhat loose-fitting tunics that he tightens around his waist with a brown leather ring-belt, and a simple pair of pants. His clothes tend to be of moderate shades, ranging in color from red to brown. On colder days he will also wear a black cloak fastened with a brass clasp in the shape of two dragons with interlocked wings. Alebard will go barefoot wherever he can and will wear only the simplest, lightest sandals when he must wear something on his feet
Alignment | Defender
Personality/Habits | Despite being in House Dracona, Alebard is actually a kind, humble, sort of person. He understands the inherent difficulties of summoning dragons, but doesn't think that being able to summon them makes him somehow better than others, and even if it does, it is only in one small way and others are better than him in other ways. Despite this, Alebard still studies as hard as he can to be the best invoker that he possibly can be. He takes his studies seriously, sometimes to the point of being nearly a hermit, spending all of his out of class time in one of the academy's libraries until being forced to go to his dorm to sleep. At other times, however, Alebard will be a bit more laid back and relaxed, usually after nearly burning himself out during a period of intense studying. Alebard is well acquainted with the truth of the adage: "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy," but he seems to have trouble finding a good balance. Even so, Alebard does well in his studies overall without ever burning himself out too much at any one time.
Background | Alebard was born to a middle class family in a town of little reputation. He knew neither luxury nor poverty, but he knew of the mystic ability of Ars Invocata, his parents both posessing Runic Blood, which was, naturally, passed on to Alebard. When his parents first tried to teach him the art, however, they feared that the talent had somehow skipped over Alebard as their son could not even open a portal to another realm, let alone summon anything, be it spirit, beast, dragon, or machine. Troubled, Alebard's father, Ecklebert, wrote to his old mentor from L'Mordryn, explaining the situation and asking if such a thing had ever happened before. A week later, Ecklebert received a reply from his mentor explaining that, yes, of a rare occasion the Gift would skip a generation or even fade from a line for several generations only to reemerge more powerful than ever a century or two later (the how and why of this was still unknown). However, it was also possible that Alebard's power was simply lying dormant and would emerge in due course. He advised Ecklebert to wait a few years and test Alebard again when he was about 10 years old. Ecklebert and his wife, Celestra, were still concerned, but they heeded the advice of Ecklebert's old mentor.
Alebard, in the meantime, read what he could about Ars Invocata, though his unsuccessful initial attempts at summoning somewhat dampened his enthusiasm for the subject. He didn't know about his father's letter to his old mentor or his parents plans to try to teach him again in a few years time. As the years passed, Alebard grew like any other boy, living an ordinary life, attending school and playing with other boys his age in the town. A few weeks after his tenth birthday, his parents asked him to attempt another summoning. Alebard was hesitant at first, still disappointed at how his attempts had failed the last time he tried, but he attempted it once more. This time, he could feel beings from realms beyond his wildest imaginings. A wide smile spread across Alebard's face as his mind soared through the realms, connecting briefly to this being or that being. Finally, he zeroed in on one. It was small, compared to some of the other beings he had found, but it was friendly and gave a happy, purring noise as Alebard's mind brushed against it. With some additional thought, Alebard bound his mind to the small creature, and with a bit more work, the creature was in the room with him. When Alebard saw the dragon appear before him, he let out a loud whoop of joy. Immediately, the dragon yelped in fright and vanished. Alebard immediately cast his mind back to the realms and found the dragon again. The dragon was still spooked from Alebard's outburst, but after a few coaxing thoughts, the dragon calmed down, and Alebard was able to summon him back to his house. He was able to contain his enthusiasm this time when the miniature dragon appeared in front of him. He let the creature crawl up his arm and perch on his shoulder.
"We're going to be the best of friends, you and I," he proudly said to his new companion.
The dragon didn't say anything, but did let out a sort of contented purring sound as Alebard stroked its head affectionately.
"But I suppose you ought to have a name," Alebard said a moment later. Having touched the mind of the dragon in order to summon it, Alebard knew the creature was capable of intelligent thought, though it's anatomy made it almost completely incapable of intelligible speech. Alebard gently probed the mind of the dragon, asking, "Do you have a name?"
After a moment, a series of sounds and images passed through the mental link between boy and dragon. Even the sounds were mostly impossible for a human to speak, and a confused look came across Alebard's face as the Dragon conveyed his name. "I can't say that," Alebard said. "I can't even understand it."
The dragon conveyed his name again, slower this time. Alebard attempted to repeat the sounds that the dragon conveyed, but his tongue got tied in knots before he got through the first syllable (which was longer than some words Alebard knew). "You're going to have to settle for something shorter," he said after a third attempt ended in a coughing fit.
Alebard sensed the dragon's disappointment and mild frustration, but as it pondered, he felt the dragon's mind probe his, looking at the sounds that Alebard was capable of producing, and after a moment of consideration, it rumbled a name, vocally this time, and Alebard repeated, "Zalek. I like it."
Alebard and Zalek became fast friends, though Alebard often had trouble maintaining his link with Zalek for extended periods of time at first. Even his initial conversation with Zalek had nearly expended him, and Zalek had returned back to his own realm shortly after the two agreed on a name. Alebard had been unable to summon Zalek again until the next day. Still, as Alebard continued to practice, Zalek was able to stay with him for longer periods of time until he is now nearly constantly with Alebard, or at least in the same realm as his summoner.
After a few more years, Alebard was old enough to attend L'Mordryn Academy, and he was quick to apply. He immersed himself in his studies, and after a year of study and hard work, he was advanced to Adept, Tier 2, mainly due to his summon of Bask, who has since become something of a mentor to him.
Favorite Summons | Zalek, a green miniature forest dragon. Zalek was the first dragon Alebard summoned and is now a near constant companion. He is only about four feet long from snout to tail with a wingspan of about five feet. He is covered with iron-hard scales of a leaf green color that are slightly reflective in sunlight. He has four bone-white horns on top of his head that angle back slightly. He is most often found sitting on Alebard's shoulder, or trying to sit on Alebard's head despite Alebard making it abundantly clear that he does not want Zalek sitting on his head. Also, his real name is not Zalek, but Zalek is the closest approximation that a human is capable of saying.
I'll get Bask up in a bit. I don't suppose he'll be too hard since Alebard hasn't known him for very long yet.
I decide to place the genders (and I think I got it all correctly, I am on mobile so I did it all from memory) because I take some characters are okay with mixed rooms and others are not. I couldn't help but to notice how uneven the gender ratio is, lol, hadn't realized Sazel was the only Bestia girl.
Oh my, Machina has one girl who has to sleep alone...
Not necessarily. Could be a room of two and a room of three. And even if a character sleeps alone, its not like they can't interact on the social area and the likes, they just miss out on having to deal with another player's character snoring too loudly while they try to rest well for an exam on the next day.
@CelesteEste e.e rooms are seperated by gender already.
Also, Cleophas is pretty messy (Mac doesn’t help either lol). Dunno if I’m supposed to be able to edit the sheet (I can’t) but you can add Cleo to Alchemy and Skirmisher’s club.
Regarding the dorm rooms...yes, the dorms are separated by gender (25 girl's rooms, 25 boy's rooms). Also, each room has four people, so even if you don't room with someone's character, you will still have NPC roommates to fill the spaces.
Is it just me, or are all the houses very unbalanced gender-wise? I think all the members of Machina are girls, only one member of Bestia is a girl, and only one member of Phantasma is a guy. Dracona is a bit better, but that's only because there are only 3 members so far (2 guys and one girl). Not that there's necessarily anything wrong with it, but it does seem kind of odd.
