BIOGRAPHY Her father was the youngest of five sons, and thus there was nothing to inherit from his father’s prosperous merchant company, and small barony. Especially after all his older brothers got their shares, and quickly ran the business into the ground. He pursued his passion for medicine and became an apothecarist. Rather than appealing to the nobility and rich with his skills in medicine he chose to settle in a village on the border of Estrye and Ilepia, and help the people for practically nothing in return.
Willa’s mother was the only daughter of the local noble family. Their elopement was not approved of by her family who had hoped to marry her off to a wealthy nobleman, and thus she was disinherited for disobeying her parents, and marrying below her station. Fast forward four children later, and Willa was born. Two days of painful labor in late winter, during one of the worst storms of the decade, she came into the world.
As a child, Willa and her family lived above their father's apothecary shoppe. It was a cramped and cluttered home, but one full of love. She was very close to her father, who she called papa. Though her father was always very busy, he always had time for his children. In his spare moments, he would teach Willa about all the medical plants, how to read, and write, and everything else he knew. At night before bed, he would tell her stories, and point out all the constellations in the sky. He instilled in her to always follow her heart and do what she thought was right. She liked to help her father in the apothecary. Young Willa didn't want to just marry, have babies, and spend the rest of her life cooking and cleaning, she wanted to forge her own destiny, and do as she pleased. She wanted an adventure and to make a difference in the world.
Willa was eight years old when her mother died from cancer. It was a crushing blow to Willa, and her father was never the same after her death. Her mother's side of the family had a change of heart with news of her death, and they offered to take Willa and her siblings in to be properly educated and raised as nobles. Her father refused not wanting split his family apart, or lose his children. But six months later he contracted scarlet fever and died. Willa and her older siblings were now under their maternal grandparents care.
Her life with her overly strict grandmother, and fearsome grandfather was not exactly pleasant. Being waited on by servants and treated differently by the villagers she always though of as her friends was hard to get used to. Cooped up indoors, learning to dance, play instruments, and become a reverent passive wife to whomever her grandfather chose, was not her cup of tea. Besides their best efforts to brainwash Willa into their way of thinking, she was steadfast in her beliefs. Unfortunately that was not the case for her eldest sister Jerrica who seemed to thrive under their guidance as materialistic snobs. A few years later, their grandfather was able to finagle Jerrica a spot as a concubine to King Magnus. Jerrica was ecstatic. To Willa the idea of being a concubine, or having to share a husband with other wives sounded awful. Over the next few years all of her siblings managed to marry into wealthy noble families, and have children.
By the time Willa was eleven, her grandparents had given up on trying to manipulate and train Willa to be the perfect mindless noble girl. They decided instead to send her to a convent in the hopes the priestess could
pray some sense into her. Life at the convent was worse then under her strict grandparents, as the woman of the convent believed in corporal punishment, and long hours of silent religious study. All the little joys in her life seemed to be sucked away here. Her only happiness where the letters she wrote and received from her sisters.
She was fourteen when Jerrica managed to get Willa a position as a lady-in-waiting to Princess Hanne, and with her grandparents blessing she was able to leave the convent and move to the palace. Her sister warned her before hand that Princess Hanne was hard to deal with, and that her to previous lady-in-waitings quite after less then a year. But Willa would befriend just about anyone if that meant she could leave the convent. Her arrival at the palace was one of splendor, she can right in the middle of the party season, so her debut into high society was quick. Princess Hanne was older then her by a few years, but the amount of trouble she would get in made Willa feel like the older of the two sometimes.
When they first met, Hanne didn't seem to like Willa all that much, she refused to be dressed by Willa, and practically kicked her out of the room when Willa offered (as a lady-in-waiting should) to help her bathe. With all warning her sister had given her about the Princess, Willa had expected a snobby spoiled princess, but Hanne was anything but that. She was just a little to adventurous for her own good, Willa went along with her schemes though. At first only because it was her role, but then she and Hanne actually became friends.
Willa was sixteen when her grandfather died, leaving his title, fortune, and land to Willa's eldest brother Walden, who took a concubine as soon as he was able. Willa felt sorry for his wife. What was even sadder was that her sister Linnea's husband had three concubines, that he seemed to prefer over her. Her parents had married for love, and her father was originally from Ilepia, so the concept of plural marriage and taking concubines was not something she or any of her siblings initially grew up with, but since it was the custom for the noble and wealthy of Estrye she had to come to accept it for those around her. She officially decided when it came to herself and her possible future husband, she would only marry for love.
Life in the palace was a dream compared to the convent, and her grandparents house. Spending her days accompanying Hanne was a joy, even when Hanne decided to do something wild, she would follow along. She will be turning 19 soon, and wonders what she should be doing with herself, as both of her sisters were married with children before they were 18.
TRIVIA. Her eldest sister,
Jerrica Bonnelle, is one of King Magnus Guo's favored concubines. Jerrica is also the mother of his two youngest children, Prince Ashen, and Princess Liesolette.
