If you're ever lonely, dim all the lights and put on a horror movie. After a while, it won’t feel like you're alone anymore. Problem solved.

《 H.E.R.O. Archives: An Abbreviated History of Superheroes 》
Greetings, prospective hero. My name is ALISA and I will be guiding you through the application process here at HERO. First, a brief lesson in our history is in order.
> > > Year 1764: The Beginning < < <
300 years ago, to the date, one of the strangest scientific anomalies in history occurred. A massive meteor jettisoned towards Earth at breakneck speeds, only to dissolve as soon as the meteor entered the atmosphere. What astronomers of the time prophesized as a bringer of doom to the human species appeared to have just been a simple near-miss. Life went on for a short while, until the scientists, and people all around the world, realized that the meteor, termed the 《 X-200 Meteor 》, had left something in its wake.

The meteor, upon dissolution, had released clouds of purple dust that had caused mutations in select numbers of fauna, flora, and most importantly, humans. These genetic mutations gave this specific group- only about 5-7% of the world's population, at the time- what is called the "Hero Gene." The Hero Gene runs in families and grants all sorts of superpowers. Some people grew wings, some people could spit fire, some people could cause countries to experience earthquakes, and some people could cause yeast to rise faster. All sorts of new powers came about from this revelation, and it led to one of the greatest paradigm shifts humanity has ever seen.

> > > 1770 - 1790: Formative Years < < <
The new class of "superhumans" came to recognize the implications of their newfound abilities much faster than the world governments did. The first "villains" and "heroes" were just superpowered crooks and ragtag groups of superpowered neighborhood watchmen, essentially. Small bands of these heroes duked it out with the early iterations of supervillains, and also did battle with "Leftovers," a blanket term for the creatures that had become affected by the X-200 meteor and had adopted (often hideous) super-mutations of their own. This kind of rampant havoc was troublesome, to say the least. Representatives from the major world powers of the time held a summit to determine how to address this new problem. The 1791 Austria Convention would reshape how the world thought of this new term of “superheroes.”

> > > 1791 - 1879: Heroes Gone Global < < <
The 1791 Austria Convention laid down a method of organizing the new “superhero” groups. The world was carved into regions, where each respective area would be responsible for administering a “hero company,” a governmental division of superheroes that worked for the government and fought to preserve the peace. All the hero companies would be linked to a single entity known as ICOSA, the International Council on Superhuman Affairs, centered in Vienna, the first real transnational governing body in human history.

This original convention was, in short, a failure, or at least, it wasn’t as successful as it could’ve been. The world was rife with tensions, and as such, the powers bestowed upon ICOSA were incredibly weak, with most of the power given to the individual nations. These individual nations used their respective hero companies less to police supervillains and more as cudgels for their enemies. Because of this, heroes were rarely around to actually help fight villains and more often that not doing battle against Napoleon or helping quash rebellions or pillaging villages in the Scramble for Africa. Superheroes, at this point in time, were not viewed very well, and would continue to be viewed poorly by the general public for almost a century. This was a dark period of superheroes, and after a coordinated series of supervillain terrorist attacks in the 1870s, combined with atrocities committed in the Crimean War of Europe and American Civil War, the international community reconvened for a second conference, this time in Geneva.

> > > 1879 - 1945: Reform and Readjustment < < <
The 1879 Geneva Convention moved the meeting grounds of ICOSA a thousand kilometers west to Geneva, Switzerland, and established new rules and legislation that redefined superheroism. Superheroes were no longer to be tools of the military, and were limited in their parameters to solely be guardians, not soldiers. Hero companies were forbidden from going to war and ICOSA enacted a series of hefty guidelines that every HERO company had to follow, lest they be punished by ICOSA. ICOSA was still a mostly laissez-faire organization, giving individual companies a great deal of autonomy and freedom to run things as they so choose, but finally began to crack down on the usage of superheroes as tools of war. From this point on, the public image of superheroes began to improve dramatically. Though Switzerland’s neutral position in both world wars meant that there were no superheroes to be serving on the frontlines, the imagery of the spandex-covered superhero finally began to take hold of the public. When the world emerged from World War 2, there was one image that remained untainted by the cynicism of the world, and that was of superheroes.

> > > 1945 - 2050: The Golden Age of Superheroes < < <
The next century or so is considered the golden era of superheroes. Trust in superheroes was at an all-time high, and for the first time since the inception of hero companies, civilians began to not only feel comfortable around superheroes, but openly followed them. Powerful superheroes, handsome superheroes, cool superheroes, funny superheroes, all of them began to grow in popularity with the public, and once the snowball started rolling, the hype only increased. By the 60s and 70s, consumerism centered around superheroes began to keep pace and even exceed at some points the fan obsession with actors and musicians, and becoming a superhero with a hero company not only became a viable career path, but a very lucrative one at that. Local and international funding guaranteed that no matter where in the world you are, signing your name with a hero company promised a good salary, plenty of benefits, and a ton of clout.

In the midst of a global obsession with superheroes, one company stood out- HERO, an American HERO Company that covered the Northeast and part of the Atlantic coast. HERO was known for being highly destructive in their superheroism, but for always getting the job done in the midst of one of the most populous and villain-infested cities in the world, Castleburg, New York. HERO had some of the strongest, cunning, caring, and oftentimes oversexualized and overhyped heroes in the world, and it earned a reputation as being chaotic but exciting, a hub of hero activity that many flocked to.

> > > 2050 - Present, The Decline < < <
After a hundred years of popularity, the advent of the future caused superheroes to tumble from the top- robots.

Robots have a lot going for them- effective, obedient, cool, and much less volatile than actual humans. In the late 2040s into the coming decades, police forces from around the world began implementing robotic divisions, known creatively as e-Police or Ekops..Their incorporation and effectiveness diminished the popularity of heroes. Hero companies are still around, and are still prevalent and heavily sponsored, but they aren’t quite the same as they used to be, with much of the public feeling more comfortable around the productive and efficacious Ekop than the humans that spit fire from their mouths.

Looming in the future, though, there are distant threats to Castleburg and the world, threats that a bunch of pieces of tin can’t stop. It’ll be up to the heroes to reassert themselves once again to keep the city- and the world at large- safe, like heroes have always done at the end of the day.

> > > TL / DR < < <
After a meteor hit Earth 300 years ago, some people developed superpowers. These superhumans were grouped up into regional, acronym-based companies all managed by a global organization called ICOSA that functioned as the UN of superhumans. Eventually, after being used as tools of war for many years, ICOSA forced superheroes to be superheroes, and they went from being viewed in disdain to being idolized as celebrities and role models for the 20th century and first half of the 21st century, when the rise of electronic policing has begun the decline of superheroes as a paragon of justice.

《 The City of Castleburg 》
Let’s now shift our scope from the world at large onto the bustling futuristic metropolis of Castleburg, New York, one of the world’s three largest cities and the home of HERO.

Castleburg is a bustling metropolis located in New York State. A thriving city on the cutting edge of the future, Castleburg is the home of more than 20 million people and is the center of HERO, the Heroic Egalitarian Rescue Organization, a hero company that covers much of the Atlantic Northeast of the United States, though its main branch is in Castleburg, a city that with its great population also has a great number of supervillains looking to bring the mighty city to its knees.

《 H.E.R.O. Affiliations 》
H.E.R.O. has been Castleburg's vanguard for hundreds of years now, a shining beacon of justice in a city that is all too often clouded with chaos. It is imperative you learn exactly what you're getting into before you join our ranks, and also, who you'll be up against.

Pointers For Character Creation < < <
  • BALANCE IS KEY! I give a lot of leeway when constructing an OC, under the assumption that everybody exercises a degree of reason when making their character. Some characters will be stronger than others, but try to balance power with weakness when making a character.
  • Third-person is preferred in the character sheet, though I will accept any perspective so long as it is thoughtfully done. Please delete all the turquoise text prior to submitting the character sheet in the OOC first.
  • You can have as many characters as you can reasonably manage, though I would suggest no more than 2-3 main characters. You can have NPC side characters as much as you want, though please do not godmod anybody else's characters or GM NPCs. If you want any sort of incorporation into the main story, please DM me and/or Canary.
  • The main character sheet portion and abilities section are both mandatory and can be separated or combined, up to you. If there is a relationship sheet added later, that would be entirely optional.
  • All faceclaims should be some form of digital art, not a real-life faceclaim, as to keep with the established theme/mood of the RP. If you have an FC that is in a gray area for whatever reason, shoot me and/or Canary a DM.
  • When in doubt, send me and/or Canary a DM and we'll be more than happy to clarify anything. I am pretty lenient, so any situation should be able to be worked out with a bit of communication.
  • Though my goal is to work everything out and try and get as many people happily participating in the RP as possible, my word is final.

  • 7/1/21: Happy Launch Day! Been very excited to launch this for a while! CLICK HERE TO JOIN DISCORD!
  • 7/5/21: Relationship sheet is up! It is entirely and completely optional, but always a benefit to start at least hashing out the ties between the characters (if there are any) before they first meet. Again, only a supplement, but a good one, in my opinion. Example and raw code are above!

HEROIC EGALITARIAN RESCUE ORGANIZATION

NOT JUST A COMIC BOOK______

In the year 1764, a mysterious meteor known as X-200 jetted towards the Earth, threatening to be a massive extinction event. Thankfully, X-200 evaporated upon contact with Earth's atmosphere, and the entire planet breathed a collective sigh of relief. It seemed as though this was just a near miss. Scientists would soon find out that it was not. The meteor had, upon dissolution, left intergalactic dust in the atmosphere that a small percentage of the population, about 5-7%, had a peculiar reaction to. 'Peculiar' not meaning the sniffles. ‘Peculiar’ meaning things such as telekinesis, teleportation, fire-breathing, flight, superhuman strength, turning into an actual dinosaur, and other impossible, strange superhuman abilities that were entirely unexplainable by conventional science. In short: Superpowers.

The first generation of "superhumans" soon realized, of course, that these powers provided opportunities to help the populace, as well as opportunities to harm and take advantage of the populace. Those that chose to use their powers for evil became the first generation of real-world villains, and those that chose to use their powers to stop these villains became the first generation of real-world superheroes. And so this new order of people, those endowed with superhuman abilities, began to battle in the streets, their newfound powers coming to blows against each other as onlookers could only watch. The world governments quickly realized the potential that these people had and sent them off to fight for their nations in the battlefield, but an organization called ICOSA, the International Council on Superhuman Affairs, which governs the way superpowers are used in everyday life, intervened and gave superheroes a place in society.

From there, superheroism hit a golden age, and being a full-time superhero became not only a viable career choice, but a very lucrative career choice for individuals who do have mutations, about 7-8% of the population. Perhaps the most infamous of these Hero Companies was HERO, the Heroic Egalitarian Rescue Organization. HERO is a hero company situated in the city of Castleburg, a vibrant, buzzing, bustling city that is also cram-full of supervillains everywhere. HERO was known, however, for always getting the job done- often at the expense of the local infrastructure. Despite this, most HERO heroes were very well-respected for their commitment to keeping their city safe, though this respect often also comes with hiding in fear of the damage they will cause.

For a century, heroes were the coolest thing around, beating out models, athletes, actors, and musicians as the top celebrities and inspirations to little kids everywhere, but it has been 300 years since the X-200 crossed Earth's exosphere, with new technology in robotics and all sorts beginning to make heroism obsolete. With threats from near and far coming to cross Castleburg, it will be up to the heroes of H.E.R.O. to step back into the limelight, put on the spandex tights and funny capes, and save the city from whatever seeks to tear it down.

HERO 2064______

Hello, and thanks for stopping in! HERO 2064 is a sequel to an RP I made at the start of the quarantine that lasted for a solid year, and I, along with my co-GM @canaryrose, wanted to re-capture that same energy in this RP, though of course, new participants are 100% encouraged to join onboard this RP!

The RP is what I would consider a
high casual difficulty RP, with an overall light/platyful mood, though some angst is always needed! While I don't like having specific numbers for paragraph requirements or word count or whatnot, I would like to see every post contribute meaningfully to the story. I would also like to see posting roughly weekly to biweekly, though I'm very flexible with real life so long as the channels of communication are open. The RP has a lot of latitude with what types of characters you can be, and hopefully it will amount to a good time!

If you have any questions, please DM me and/or @canaryrose and we'll be happy to answer! If you're interested, please pop into our Discord and the main Guild thread (see below), and don't hesitate to keep bumping this thread up! Thank you for reading and I hope to see you in the RP!

"Fianna, Marinette," the younger girl said to herself, committing the names and faces to memory. "Those are very nice names!" Gwen quickly added with a chipper smile, before her eyes were drawn to the rip on her sleeve. She looked down to it, sticking two fingers into the tear, before pulling them out. Bone dry, thankfully. "It’s just a tear in the fabric. Nothing serious," Gwen said dismissively. "Thankfully. I will need a new jacket, though…oh, right!” The girl quickly snapped back to her original train of thought. "Gwen Zhang. Communicator of Ryujin!” she said excitedly to the soldier lady, eyeing her up. Gwen had expected some of the warrior types to make an appearance as Communicators, but this woman did seem especially intimidating, somehow.

Speaking of the French infantrywoman, Marinette had suggested that the small group make progress, which Gwen hurriedly agreed to. "Oh, yes, yes, yes please, just get me out of this cold,” Gwen said anxiously, before beginning to trek forwards again towards the white barrier, not bothering to check to see if the other two were following. At this point, Gwen had managed to stave off the deep cold from the warming excitement of meeting other Communicators and having to fight for her life for a few moments, but it was back and colder than ever. Gwen hurried over to the swirling barrier of snow. To any mortal that had somehow managed to venture to this point, the blizzard would be a terrifying site, with shards of snow and ice whipping fast enough to make even the most experienced travelers shiver in fear. However, strangely enough, Gwen felt as though the barrier was harmless, and as if it was beckoning her forwards. This was because she was not wrong at all. Gwen slowly and steadily stepped into the moving blizzard, and just like that, she passed through without a hitch. It was like she had phased through.

Instantly, a flood of warmth filled Gwen’s body as the magic of the Sky Palace entered her. It was exhilarating, like she had stepped into a sauna. The entire place had an air of ancient magic to it. Standing before her was a massive castle built out of polished limestone, with towers capped with emerald spires flanking the building, and a few green vines drooping down from the building’s parapets. In front of the massive building was what appeared to be a massive porcelain bowl, from which a gigantic violet fire flickered. Stone paths split out from the central palace like a spiderweb, etching out into the walls of the valley in which the Sky Palace was located- one of the doorways was made of thick marble and flanked by Corinthian columns, another was carved out of sandstone, with etched figures surrounding the doorway; a third was built of thick cedarwood and had a shield laying on each door, a fourth was a gnarled green u-shaped door with a heavy golden knocker on it, and the last, the one that Gwen felt a calling towards, was surrounded by a torii gate and covered by bead curtain.

Still in astonishment by this scene, Gwen wordlessly approached the burning flame, staring up at the flickering magical fire in awe and feeling its warmth radiate against her cool skin. This place looked and felt like it was from a Disney movie. It was, needles to say, a surreal experience.

"Poor snake," Teddy said quietly, but his stoic face showed no signs of mourning for the snake. He didn't dislike snakes; in fact, he found them quite interesting. However, this was no time to be mourning over creatures that wanted him dead, no matter how cool they looked. If the group stayed there any longer, there was an increasingly high chance that there would be more than just a single giant cobra coming for their flesh.

Thankfully, the end of the corridor was not far away. Only a hop and a step down the hallway were the heavy stone doors that the sensation in the back of his mind told him was the end of the journey. Teddy rested his shoulder against the doorway, pressing hard, and the massive slab of rock slid open, the shining light of day filtering into the corridor as Teddy managed to open the door. Once he had managed to push the heavy slab of rock ajar, Teddy stepped out into the sunlight, before realizing that he, along with the rest of the group, was standing way up in the sky.

The Sky Palace, and what Teddy believed were many of the other Communicators, were way down below Teddy's current position. He, along with the other cavern-travelers, was stuck upon a stone ledge suspended way up on the side of the valley in which the Sky Palace was nestled. The good news, at least, was that this magical valley was not nearly as bitterly cold as was the frigid New Hampshire wild or even the cave. The bad news was that their resting place was hundreds of feet beneath them. Luckily, Teddy was creative, and years of the powers of Anubis being in his blood had given him an edge in the utilization of his natural gifts. From his hand, a long length of bandages emerged, dropping from his palm and slinking down the side of the mountain all the way to the ground level of the Sky Palace. Teddy looked around at the group. "Anybody see something we can hang this on?" Teddy asked quietly as he looked around. "I'd offer to hold on, but I wouldn't like to be pulled to my death anytime soon."

Gwen was absolutely and utterly terrified by this giant harpy creature that was now bearing down upon her. Ryujin had told her about these sort of creatures existing out in the depths of the wild, but had not expected to encounter one so soon into her tenure as a Communicator, and was far too exhausted and cold to think as to how to rationally. She was about to just try and dodge and make a break for it when the bird was suddenly speared clean out of the sky by an arrow. Gwen’s head turned with a start to see another individual approaching. Another Communicator. Or at least, what Gwen assumed to be another Communicator, unless the random hikers of New Hampshire carried around bows to shoot down wild bird monsters.

The girl walked over, offing the harpy with another arrow to the head, before approaching Gwen. She wasn’t too intimidating, Gwen supposed. She was a bit older than Gwen and her musculature more well-defined, but overall she looked very approachable. She took the young woman’s hand, pulling herself to her feet. "Gwen," the 18-year-old said with her best attempt at a chipper smile. "Thank you so much for the help," Gwen said, taking a glance back at the harpy that was bleeding out on the ground, staining the white snow with a dark maroon froth. "I didn’t bring a weapon, because, you know, I wasn’t told that I was going to be attacked by flying birds."

”You are beyond stubborn,” Ryujin said in the girl’s head.

"Anyway," the younger girl continued, shivering slightly in the cold, "thanks again. I owe you one, big time.” Gwen didn’t know exactly how she could pay this woman back, but she’d figure it out. She did save her life, after all. Before she could ask for the redhead’s name, however, another woman approached the duo, appearing out of nowhere. She was larger and apparently very French, and she began speaking to the two in French. Gwen looked at the woman like a deer in headlights. ”Umm...oui oui?”

Teddy ran his fingers along the carvings of the wall. It was fascinating. It seemed to be some sort of painting, like a cave painting, depicting the Olympians and Egyptian Gods meeting atop a massive cloud. The details of the image were strangely both archaic but incredibly precise and smooth. No regular mortal could have ever carved something like this, something so precisely created and etched into the cave's walls. Teddy could tell that the doorway was made by some sort of divine presence.

As he examined the mysterious wall, though, he heard a voice behind him. Teddy turned his head, looking at the girl standing before him. She was around Teddy's age and fairly tall, with a sword hanging from her hip, standing in the middle of a deadly spider-infested cave. It didn't take a rocket scientist to figure out who Teddy was dealing with. The youth gave a curt nod to Akeno, his lips tightly compressed as he thought of what to say. After leaving her question in the air for a couple of seconds, he responded with a simple, "yeah," before adding, "Me too. Think I'm figuring something out here..."

Teddy pressed his hand against a large carving of the sun in the middle of the etched portrait, and there was a loud rumbling sound as the wall began to part right down the middle. A confident smirk on his face clear as day even in the darkness of the cave, Teddy stepped back as the painting split open in the middle, revealing a large hidden chamber behind the wall. Unlike the rest of the cave, this chamber seemed to have been crafted by some other figure, with perfectly even, polished stone walls equipped with scarlet flickering torches. "Ladies first," Teddy pined quietly as he examined the hidden corridor.

As he took his first steps into the corridor, Teddy quickly stopped as he noticed something on the other end. Two glowing green lights, vastly different from the flickering torches that lined the corridor. Teddy had a realization in his heart of what was about to happen as he saw the creature slink out from the darkness. It was a cobra. A very large cobra, as tall as Teddy, perhaps, with a body that winded into the dark recesses of the corridor.

Teddy held up the torch as he stepped back, looking at the creature, which seemed to be preparing to make a move. "Looks like they wanted to test us," Teddy said with a certain sense of familiarity, standing lightly on his toes as he looked over to his fellow Communicator. Evidently, the Gods were not afraid of putting them in life-or-death situations off the bat. This was a message and a test. A message to tell the Communicators that they were not special, but disposable- and a test for the Communicators to prove the Gods wrong.

"I hope you know how to use that thing," Teddy was, gesturing to the sword as the massive cobra reared its head back, preparing to bite. "And I hope you’re not afraid of snakes,"
