Mandy had followed her dad into his office and sat at his computer. The email was open and ready for her. It was an announcement to all the teachers and parents of any students. She was a little surprised about that last part. However, in Deaf culture information was so vital. Deaf people couldn't get their information in a lot of the standard ways people did. Hearing people were never aware of how much of their world information they got from a T.V. or radio playing the background, or just from snippets of conversation caught while on the bus or walking through town. Deaf people didn't have access to that vicarious learning. So it had become ingrained in the culture to ask semi-invasive questions or give what a hearing person would have considered TMI.

She read the email quickly, frowned, and read it again slower. There was a new sickness, she couldn't help but worry about COVID. That had caused so many issues. Would the school cancel and go back online? She hated online learning. Symptoms included a cough and high fever, bloodshot and or redness of the eyes and yellowing of the skin. The last few stood out. The sickness also seemed to have come from South America rather than China. She was about to start discussing the email with her dad when a light flashed. That light indicated that someone was at the front door.

Her dad left the room heading for the front door and Mandy followed behind him. The door opened before he got to it but Mandy only smiled because she saw who was entering over her dad's shoulder. She waved and joined the woman, Millie, in the kitchen. "Thank you." Mandy signed and hugged Millie. She then kissed her fist.

Niah didn't care about the other werewolves. She went for Lycon. It seemed, since none of them had attacked her that it was a similar thought. A re-match. Too bad Nancy wasn't here to pop all their heads like the ones at the train stop. The memory gave her the strength she needed.

She drew her invisible sword and attacked Lycon. He was able to parry. The pair of them exchanged another attack and perry before Niah was able to land a blow. It wasn't big, it wouldn't be enough. She would have to continue to press the attack.

Andy didn't know these were the werewolves that had doomed her aunt, which might have been a good thing. However, they were attacking so she had no scruples with attacking back. Unlike Arthur fighting had come more naturally for Andy, she wasn't afraid of it and didn't feel guilty when killing monsters.

The dust settled from the one who had attacked her and she turned her attention to the next one. Lightening striking near him, but missing. Chocolate took that as a cue though and attacked the werewolf too killing it. She was a little surprised. Up to this point he hadn't done much fighting maybe he didn't want to be shown up by Arbor.

Andy tried to hit another and it was the same, she missed the man but Chocolate went for the kill. She smiled. Even if she wasn't able to take the werewolves out at least Chocolate was doing a good job at it. She went for a third but both of them failed this time. Her lightening went wide and the werewolf seemed to have wisened up that the dog wasn't just for show.

Andy saw Zari exit, she was smiling. Andy blinked and shook her head trying to shake it off. She knew what it was like to be drained now. On unsteady feet she walked over to Zari, trying to smile. Mary Sue came out before she could say anything. She was sobbing, on the floor.

"Damn, help me with her." She asked Zari and hurried to Mary Sue's side. She was careful with her gloves and Mary Sue's clothes to keep from touching her skin to skin when she heard someone come out of the haunted house screaming. Andy looked over and saw it was April, but Leah had rushed to her side. April would hopefully be okay.

"Hey, Mary Sue. I'm here." She said trying to reassure the younger girl. She wanted to be friends with the sweet anxious girl. She hoped she hadn't ruined those chances by taking her through a nightmare house...that was no haunted house. It was something else. Something that used your fears against you. Your inner anxiety. If anyone Andy knew had tremendous inner anxiety it would probably be Mary Sue. And from April's reaction probably her too. Something Andy would have to keep in mind.

"Will staying behind mean no return for you?" Ed asked Max. Now was not the time to ask Max more direct questions like 'how did you know me before now and how do I die? Don't lie I saw my grave summoned by you', however, the idea of Max dying before Ed could ask those questions was unsettling.

Guin took off and Max had summoned a penguin that was leading the way to wherever Cortez's sister was. While Ed wanted answers, there were injuries among the group. Lance had healed when he had gone green, but Perry had still taken a blast into a wall and had burns on her. Those needed attending too. Others had scrapes, those could wait. He reached for the unlabeled jar of Perry's hair, he hadn't gotten around to labeling it like he hadn't for Jaclyn.

Orange light glowed and instead of the cooling healing effect pain wracked Perry's body. He dropped the spell quickly. "I apologize that should not have happened." He took a slow breathe. The stress and irritation of this all had gotten to him. He calmed his nerves down and tried again. This time the orange light that covered Perry's burns soothed rather than hurt.

A part of him filed away the incident. He had never thought that his healing could be used for pain instead. And he didn't like the implications.

Mandy's bags were packed. She was ready to head back to Cornell. She should have gone back earlier but she had been delayed. The lights of her room flicked off and on twice, she looked up from the bag she had been double-checking. Her dad was standing there. He smiled at her, dropping his hand away from the light switch.

In a modified 5, with her middle finger at a slight angle, she swiped up at her chest, Mandy's brows were slightly furrowed in a questioning expression. "What's up?"

Her father's eyebrows went up and he held up both hands in 5's palms up and then quickly flicked inward till the palms were facing down. "Finished?" Mandy nodded. He continued to sign, "My school has sent out an email about a new sickness. I want you to read it." Mandy nodded again and followed him down the hall to the office.

Niah tensed. Then she glared at the man. She considered for a moment being diplomatic. Niah could be when the time called for it. After all, she was a Senator, even if New Rome was limping along in the charity of the Greeks.

"None of your damn business." She snapped. "Bastos ka" She cursed at him, telling him in her native tongue to 'fuck off'. Wishing her sword wasn't on her back, but at her hip instead which would make it easier to draw and attack in a smoother motion.

"He is a werewolf, do not let any of them scratch or bite you." She told the others, warning them of the danger they were in and that the men before them were all monsters, not human.

Andy was surprised at Niah's tone. She didn't understand what she said in the strange language that sounded vaguely like Spanish. But she could make an educated guess from the tone. Everything else was fair. She placed her hand on her bracelet ready to draw her knife. Missing Arthur and how they could fight together. She'd have to get in close to use the dagger or call lightening again. And after the storm, she was a little nervous about that.

Andy didn't remember what quest the trio that's destination had been Mount Tam. She knew that this place was sort of like Mount Olympus and had something to do with Atlas, but other than that she honestly didn't remember the quest for here. She did know now because of what Persopheny had said that there was a Giant here though, that's why they'd need her help. But for now she kept her mouth shut, watching the werewolves to be ready to fight.

Andy laughed, Mary Sue probably wasn't wrong from how the people exiting looked. She smiled, held her head up, and walked in. For a moment the room was too dark to see anything, and she took a few steps, her hand out in front of her to keep her from running into a wall. Then she found herself in a well-lit room. A room she knew too well.

Bright fluorescents hummed and rows of bunk beds cast shadows. Unlike its real-world counterpart, one Andy hoped was long gone, the room seemed to go on in every direction. There were no walls—just rows of beds. The room was empty, something she couldn't say she had seen happen very often. For her it had only been a few years, for the world it had been almost twenty, since she had stood in this room. This room was designed to break her. The whole school had been.

Andy had to admit, this was a top-tier horror house. Her friends were gone and she was in a place that she hated more than anywhere else in the whole of the world. She had frozen. Held perfectly still in the fear that crawled through her. However, she had escaped this place once. She had walked away and she was not back there. Instead, she had found herself at a new school far into the future where people like her were treated well. Her fear shattered as she thought of Zari. This was the past and she was stronger than it.

She started walking. Figuring she'd find an exit. When she did, the door did not lead out, but instead into the gym of the Drummonds' studio. On the other side of the square someone was punching a dummy. They did not take notice of Andy, not until the door shut with a slam behind her. Their hands dropped and they turned, not quickly as if startled, no this person had been expecting her.

"You made it." Her own voice said from the other side of the square. Because it was her. "I was starting to think your past had scared you more than your future did now." There was a smirk in her voice. "You ran away from the past, got so far away from it you're legally dead, almost a whole adult is now between you and the people who you killed. Did you really think it'd be all Sixteen Candles and Breakfast Club from here on out?"

Andy didn't say anything, but she did walk closer to the square. It still kept the two apart, it was the space of choices, the space of winning or losing between them.

The other Andy climbed into the square, leaning under a rope and hopping into it with ease and grace. Andy hadn't been in a square in what felt like years but was less than a year. Had she ever entered that easily, that cool and collected? She didn't think so, even now her hands were sweating. Without choosing to, she climbed into the square. She clenched her hands and gloves were on them.

A bell rang. The other Andy moved faster than she could track and punched her square in the face. Andy recoiled, her nose filling with blood.

"You're afraid of what you could become. Too afraid to do anything. You teeter on the edge of slipping into Mother's grasp. But that means you're too afraid to become yourself." Lightening crackled around the other Andy, this time Andy ducked it, and punched back. The world had become the fight. This was where she excelled. Her world hemmed in by ropes on four sides as she punched and kicked. It felt good.

Punches and kicks and lightning were exchanged. It lasted for hours or seconds. Finally, the fight that had waged on between them with no end in sight Andy, gasping for air leaned against the post, she was watching the other Andy as they removed the gloves.

"You've been getting hungry, you know what that means, no muffin will satiate you ever again." Her bare hand wrapped around Andy's neck and she felt her body begin to sag. She could breathe, but that wasn't what was happening. "Don't be weak, weakness will kill you." Teeth sunk into her neck. The world narrowed, her vision started to blur and the edges darkened.

Just as the last of the light vanished from her vision Andy stumbled and landed on her knees and hands. The sound of the dance filled her ears and she knew she was out of the haunted house.

Sweat was pouring down her, the costume well ruined. Andy stood and stepped to the side. She kept her eyes open as much as she wanted to close them and gather her strength. But she dared not. Dared not risk having someone come to her aid and touch her. Because she was hungry.
