Now, this could be completely mundane, but Lorenzo's instincts said that such an accident, with a massive loss of life, at this point in time, was very massively suspicious. So the young man looked at Caster and said, "I, and maybe Saber, might consider it; there's been a massive 'accident' and a slaugther of humans that cannot be overlooked so easily, even if the causes are entirely mundane - Which I doubt."

His gaze growing firmer, he spelled out what he wanted in exchange for putting in a good word for the Servant, "Help us confirm if that accident was completely accidental, and that ought to be proof that you're genuine about your intentions. Is that good enough?"

Then he turned to the rest of the group and said, "Do you guys agree with this as well? So many people dead is worth investigating, even if it's completely mundane, there would be tons of wraiths and ghosts who might be lingering around the area for Rogue Servants to use or consume..."

If Kayneth's familiar was still here, he'd speak to it and Kayneth himself, asking, "So, Rider... Is he yours? He appears to be a loyal and honorable Servant worthy of you..."

The protean being who lived in a lake of serpents found themselves drawn to the lights and noise of humanity. They knew not what they were, but prey, for they had only known the natural world.

They feasted upon the prey, for they were the predator. As they ate they changed. Reflecting those they hunted, their form shifted to match what their prey feared. They were given the shape of a monster.

As they listened to the screams and cries, and observed those who attempted to fight them, they changed. They took in their anger, their hatred, their resentment, and their grudges. They filled themselves with it.

As they digested the prey, they began to understand. They had not even realized how empty they were. They had not realized how shapeless they had been. They had finally found their purpose in the world.

They were Grendel, their purpose was to commit evil acts, for that was what made them Grendel.

Yet there was one last lesson Grendel had to learn. While there are always monsters, there must always be heroes to defeat those monsters. The light of humanity to banish the darkness of humanity.

The hero came, without Grendel even knowing, and the two battled. The protean creature fought primeval human might and lost. Their form was torn apart, and they were forced to flee.

As they bled to death, their blood seeped into where their mother slept. It awoke her, and in a reflection of the humans Grendel hunted, she became what Grendel wanted at that moment.

The nature of an Avenger is to gather people’s hatred and grudges within oneself. A monster through and through, who consumes the flesh of others and with it, their anger and resentment. A protean being who has become stained with the evil of humanity.

Oblivion Correction: B
The nature of an Avenger is never to forget the grudges done against them. While people forget many things, Grendel must remember. He sees what they have forgotten, he remembers what they do not—a mindless being who gained a mind from what humanity would prefer to forget.

Self-Replenishment (Mana): B
The nature of an Avenger isn’t to stop until their revenge is accomplished. To eat someone is to consume their regrets. The energy of their final moments carries with it the darkest emotions—a hollow being who has become filled with the evils of humanity.

A technique to observe and understand people. At this rank, it goes from observation to something resembling mind reading. It is only natural for one who is empty to be filled by their surroundings. When there is nothing to bias one’s observations of the world around them, they can see the truth.

Shapeshift: A+
The ability to change one's appearance and body. A protean being whose body changes according to their wishes. From appearing as a mundane human and hiding their servant presence, to growing into a giant monstrosity, and even stranger forms. Humanities evils are made manifest in Grendel’s body.

Transfiguration: A
As Grendel has no true form, their parameters are not set. Just as their body fluctuates, their parameters fluctuate with their form and will. They have a set amount of points they can place into each category, 30, with each parameter having these respective values: A-7, B-6, C-5, D-4, E-3.

The formless being who gorged themselves on humanity.

The monster who took into themselves the anger, grudges, and resentment of those they ate.

It is only natural for one without a set form to reflect those who see them. To change according to the world around them. For one who has been deemed to be the “Monster”, they reflect that meaning.

This noble phantasm represents the true nature of Grendel as a being without one true solid form and only the title of “Monster”. It is in effect an upgrade to their normal shapeshifting capability, allowing them to bypass the limits of their Transfiguration and Shapeshift skills.

They can split their form into multiple bodies, assume the characteristics of other monsters to the point of being indistinguishable from them through mundane means, and give themselves extra points to spend with Transfiguration to boost their parameters even further. Whatever is required to truly become the Monster to humanity.

Because of its very nature, its strength is directly tied to assuming the role of the Monster. It grows stronger the closer to a specific individual or group’s idea of a monster Grendel becomes, and weaker the further away from that idea Grendel becomes.

Trivia:
The reason why Grendel’s default is a female appearance is due to their mother. There is only one grudge they can truly call their own. And that is the anger their mother felt upon Grendel’s death. Alongside the formless protean nature of Grendel and his Mother, it could be said that they are the same.

They frequently have a metal shackle attached to one of their arms, when not trying to trick someone with their appearance. It is a lingering remanent of the trauma of having their arm ripped off by Beowulf.

Time Alter was ready and his Magic Circuits were starting to run, just in case. He also planned to test out his 'Theosis Magecraft', if it were possible to do so and if it would have any effect on whatever Servant was approaching them; if it was someone not martially-inclined, such as a Caster... He might actually be able to help.

Oleg-Marie's mood shifted as he realized Lorenzo was about to ally with them, and said to Puss, telepathically, On second thought, don't kill him! And if you really want to know my actual wish, well, once my father is dead, I'm going to persuade that guy to get himself released from his vows to the Church so he can marry me - Yes, we're both men, but we can just use a surrogate mother or an artificial womb to sire a child. Can you try and secure that future, even without a Grail?

Then to Kayneth, Oleg-Marie nodded and said, "Then I'll keep the scroll for now and postpone the moment I sign it, if that's the case. Also, as for what we should do first..."

He looked at his Mystic Code, the small box containing Mini-CHALDEAS, then said, "There is a Servant, with antagonistic intentions, heading towards a construction site where a bunch of other Servants and Masters have gathered. Let's pile up on her?"

The Cambodian Army, Police, and Special Forces were gathered around the Convention Center, ranging tanks, armored personnel vehicles, and even heavy machine guns in front of the building as if the enemy were inside the premises, not on their borders. It was clear that they were waiting for a moment of justification for future treachery, and this moment came sooner than anyone would have liked when the speakers turned on and the voice of Cambodia's Prime Minister, whom the politically astute remembered to be a ruthless, tight-fisted man who had reduced the parliamentary opposition's power to almost nothing, rang through the halls:

"People of Cambodia, members of the Army, I regret to inform you that a member of our Parliament, Phuong Keo, has been murdered... By one of the members of Task Force Obsidian, Callie Lindmann. This, in turn, is a nefarious act of treachery, which in turn adds to various minor slights our great nation has received from the Vietnamese and the Thai, including dragging us into the ASEAN War in the first place. Thus, we declare the dissolution of the conference held in this country and Cambodia - And Laos' - departure from ASEAN, the nationalization of all assets belonging to other ASEAN nations, and the arrest of all ASEAN-loyal personnel in the country - Starting with Task Force Obsidian."

"We're fighting our way out of here!" Noel Alonso proclaimed as he barked into the comms, "Myron, Nico, everyone, we need to reach the Mekong River; I already called for extraction but they'll take two hours to arrive!"

Then suddenly, the walls dividing the Philippine delegation's office exploded, and Superbia - The first Superbia Avatar, not the 'Yulian' one - entered the room. In one of his large, calloused hands was held, by the hair, the head of Lei Qingshe, detached from the rest of the body and trailing blood as it swung carelessly from the man's hand. Superbia then threw the head onto the floor before them, saying to Noel, Maria, Henri, Aoi, and Nil, "Your greatest hope has been lost by my hand. Look at your future, and despair."

Behind him were several elite members of the Cambodian Special Forces, many of them mundane soldiers who had only assault rifles, anti-materiel rifles, heavy pistols, and flash-bang grenades; they were facing Henri, ready to shoot. But all that did was embolden Noel as he said, "Henri, use your power to erase this Avatar! The rest of us will hold back the enemy troops!"

Here was hoping Henri was not suddenly paralyzed by despair or ennui or some other emotion, otherwise, Noel would surrender himself so that the rest of the group could get away...

As for Team Myron, they were exhausted, had gone through hell, and now their allies had betrayed them. How can things get worse?

Well, their floor was an exposed position and the Cambodian forces were now raining down machine gun fire at them through the windows, while snipers shot armor-piercing and explosive rounds at the same time. And dare we mention the grenades and grenade launchers, which were hurling incendiaries at them to set the area ablaze?

Oh, and Iranian-made drones zoomed into their area to attempt a kamikaze attack on their position just a few seconds later; Cristina would have to shoulder most of the fighting despite her exhaustion unless the others came up with a plan.

Nico, meanwhile, only had flash bangs and tear gas canisters shot at him through the window. He'd evade those easily considering how his Noble Arm was suddenly empowered by an infusion of magical energy that nevertheless marked the arrival of an enemy; it was an open secret that Huo Ren could not choose who his Noble Arm's leakage of power made stronger as long as the other Noble Arm had a fitting theme (Sun or Fire).

And indeed he was, his spear drawn and his eyes gleaming with greedy desire. Accompanying him was Yulian, who was carrying a strange sword, closer to a baton or small lance, that glowed with spinning red script.

"Qingshe is dead," Huo Ren had the temerity to announce. "The embarrassment I was put through today has been more than made up for, as now, I have been avenged. And now, thanks to Mr. Suburov here, I will have what I want..."

As for how I found out about all this, well, the Grail itself is in a tug-of-war between 'Fragments of Purity' trying to prevent Angra Manjyu from corrupting any Wish made, and Angra Manjyu itself. Various acts committed during the Holy Grail War will affect that tug of war. I have one of those Fragments inside me during my summoning pumping knowledge into my Saint Graph from the Grail, but not extra Mana - This is another reason why I need to either stick to Leylines or get someone to provide me with magical energy soon... Although to be honest, I'd choose Rider any day after he stood up for me, and as atonement for me being indiscreet with his True Name and Identity."

He then faced Saber and sighed, "So it seems that you'll have to make a very good counter-offer or just defeat me if you want me serving you - I have a debt to repay now..."

So paradoxically, to get my goal of displacing my father and stopping his foolishness... I must have some limits. That said, I am willing to kill and betray to get what I want; sometimes the end does justify the means, and sometimes... It might not. It depends on what ends and what means. Is that an adequate answer, Lord El-Melloi?"

While waiting, he took out his personal Mystic Code, a microcosm of his father's project, "CHALDEAS", and gave it a short, but deep glance, before muttering, "Huh, Lorenzo and a bunch of Servants are in an abandoned construction lot. Also, it seems like some of the corruption that stopped my father from using the Fuyuki Grail has rubbed off on the Kyoto one."

Remembering Puss' existence, Oleg then telepathically messaged, Assassin, you're still watching that construction site, right? If so... Observe what you can about that mysterious Saber. If you can kill her Master, do so at once.

No Command Seals were used, though, and Puss can feel, through their bond, that Oleg didn't actually want to kill Saber's Master, the Churchman. But he was still going to do so if it got him an advantage. After all, Lorenzo Calungsod Emiya was the enemy, mysterious personal attachments must be pushed aside.

Factions of the Tri-Mon Setting

The Order of Mesia (Law): Humanity needs Law and Order under One God, One Law, to find true meaning and community in a harsh world where each individual is weak. Under orders from the God of Monotheism, the one who proclaims himself the "One True God", YHVH, the Order of Mesia seeks to conquer Japan and set up the 'Thousand Year Kingdom', where the chosen few will live under absolute order and peace while the rest will be exterminated and their souls thrown into eternal torment. They despise Pokemon and Digimon and prefer to use 'Angels', which in this setting are just a subtype of Demon.

Their leaders are four such Angels: Michael, Uriel, Raphael, and Gabriel.

The Council of Wisdom (Neutral): Scholars of multiple faiths met in Nagasaki, Japan, during the Sengoku Period and compared notes and found out that through 'Observation', the Gods, or even God/YHVH himself, can have their nature changed by human belief. Weaponizing this, the Council embarked on a centuries-long quest to shape the beliefs of the Japanese people to maximize the amount of supernatural power it could draw on, creating the first Pokemon as a side experiment to create a more dependable type of 'Monster'.

In the late 20th Century, they split into the Nagasaki Fleet (who believe that rewriting God/YHVH into a benevolent, non-genocidal entity is viable and desirable), the Imperial Army (who want to replace all Demons with Pokemon and Digimon through mass genocide), and the Zaibatsu (a group of rich corporations that want to make money, even if it means exploiting Humans and 'Mons alike).

The Ring of Gaea (Chaos): The Gaeans believe in two things: One is Free Will, and the other is Rule by the Strong, even when the strength is used to deny others' freedom. The Ring of Gaea seeks to bring down the remnants of the central government in Japan so that an anarchic landscape of warlords, bandits, and pirates can take their place; a wonderland of slaughter, superscience, and sorcery. They work with local warlords and provide them with magical strength in the form of Mages while making side deals with the Zaibatsu to make money off the trade in human beings - Slaves.

They claim to worship a 'Mother Goddess', Gaea herself, but their strongest leader is Lucifer himself, who in the past had been rewritten by the Council of Wisdom to be a well-intentioned rebel against YHVH's tyranny.
