The worst thing about mental illness is you have to look after yourself a disgusting amount. I know it's the only way to actually be in a fit state to look out for others, but it still feels wrong.

Judging by the Internet's definitions of introversion and extraversion, you'd think everyone's either an extreme hermit or a party animal with no in between.

Bio

A frazzled British thirtysomething cat mum with something of a tea addiction.

I like a wide range of RP genres, but have two absolute favourites: Pokemon and magical girls. (If someone manages to combine the two, I'll be VERY happy!) I post fairly regularly, but sometimes shit mental health days crop up - if that causes any delays, I'll try to resume posting ASAP.

Jessamyn "Jess" Bailey

There weren't many customers, or much paperwork. Which, for many people, Jess imagined would make for a nice relaxing morning. Not for her, though, as it meant there was little to keep her mind occupied. In between the few tasks she had, she browsed the internet for instructions on martial arts techniques. Reading about them wasn't the same as practicing, but it kept her distracted, and the information would hopefully be something she could apply.

The morning ticked by slowly, and when the clock finally read noon, Roxy asked about lunch. "Yep, sounds good," Jess replied, shutting down the computer and following Roxy to the cafe. As always, she tried to ignore the men trailing them, but they were a constant reminder of the situation.

They stepped into the cafe's comforting atmosphere, one of rich coffee smells, friendliness, and relaxation. Or at least, it would have been a comfort if not for the worries plaguing both of them. No sooner had they ordered and sat down than Jess' phone pinged. The text she read brought mixed emotions, entirely her own.

She raised her eyes from the screen. "Hey so, Mom's asking if we'd be able to spend the weekend with her," she explained. "Is that ok?" It meant Roxy wouldn't have to deal with her father, at least for this week, but it'd mean more secrets to keep under wraps. Surely her mom had spoken to Reginald by now, and Jess wondered what she must think of him - had he earned her trust, or had she figured out something was off?

Jess forced herself to focus on other subjects. If they spent the weekend away, it would be a good chance to put the bowl of questions to use.
Happy Halloween!

There it was again, a twinge of guilt from Roxy. "I mean I'd gladly come along," Jess reassured her. She didn't want to take that hobby away from the anchor, who'd already made enough sacrifices, although right now it'd probably be more than she could handle. And if it did prove too much for her... She knew Roxy well enough to know she'd blame herself. "But yeah, might be best to wait a while."

She took a towel and wiped the sweat from her forehead, freshening up as Roxy did. Best to be well presented for work, put up a facade of normality, no matter how troubled life outside of business hours was. "Well, all we've gotta take on now are car repairs and paperwork," she joked, following Roxy into the garage. If only they had a surefire way to face the real challenge ahead.

Mara pressed her lips together, but nodded. Tasers weren't exactly known for channeling electricity through people's fingers. Or smelling of lemon. This guy was clearly looking for any excuse to withold refunds, not that she'd expected anything different.

That expectation was turned on its head as an official-looking figure approached, taking over from the volunteer. A much friendlier attitude wasn't all he presented - to Mara's surprise, he handed out a sticker and a wad of cash.

For a few moments, Mara was speechless. Well, that was quite the upturn of events. "Thanks, I was starting to doubt I'd see a cent of that." Tucking the money into her wallet, she rolled her eyes in the direction of the volunteer who trudged away. Ok, so maybe her judgement of him was a little unfair. An unessenced person sick of people rubbing their talents in their face - That sounded rather familiar. As much as she'd envied her siblings, and as badly as they'd treated her, they did benefit humanity. She couldn't deny that.

"Yeah. Though it sure would help if some weren't so quick to flaunt it at every possible opportunity." She thought of Conner, and the water splash. "And yep, it'd be nice to make something useful of this." Useful. She hadn't imagined that word could describe anything she did. Could that change? Producing clean energy would be a better line of work than waitressing, depending how well the people involved were treated.

"As for other plant essenced people," she continued, "Turns out there are a fair few here, despite all the time-wasters we've had in the queue." Speaking of, she wasn't about to hold up the rest of the line. "Well, I'd better let things move along, but I guess a chat later wouldn't hurt." Whether it would help was another matter, but at least there was a chance. She wondered if the researcher had met any other electricity users. If so, would he have any advice about electric powers?

Heading away, she cringed, gloved hands in her jeans pockets. As someone who preferred to get things done herself, the thought of asking for help didn't sit well with her, but she had no choice. Right now, she needed to find Felicia, to further discuss matters.

Glancing towards the setup as Roxy gestured, Jess smiled. "Yeah, funny how vigorous exercise can actually be pretty relaxing." While her fingers still stung, it had done her good to experience the benefit herself, and had been a valuable bonding experience. A simple, routine-driven life would be ideal for both her and Roxy - that was, if they had that luxury. The thought overshadowed the calm mood she'd built up.

Quickly, she picked something else to focus on. "As for MMA fighting... Uh yeah, probably not my kind of thing. Being in the ring myself, that is. But if you want, I'd be happy to watch." While she'd gladly root for Roxy, and watch her doing something she enjoyed, the only possible problem would be her ability. Would all that excitement from the spectators and fighters overwhelm her? Hopefully by then, the shield would be a little stronger.

Leaning against the door frame, Sophia turned and scowled. Glad as she was that Oscar was alright, she'd expected nothing less than this kind of overconfidence from him. She couldn't look after herself? Seriously? For Arceus' sake, she wasn't THAT exhausted... She stood up straight, only to stagger as the room lurched.

"Ugh... How very typical of you," she muttered. Glancing from the unconscious girl to Rheese, she sighed. It was a bad time to let this develop into a full blown argument. "But fine. Deal." With not just an Arcanine, but a Leafeon, it seemed Oscar would have a good chance. Which, while envy-inducing, was oddly admirable. She watched the newly-evolved Nomia nuzzle Skoll, and her expression softened. For all his faults, Oscar knew how to raise happy, friendly Pokemon.

With another look at the girl on the floor, Sophia bit her lip. "She's going to be ok, right?" she asked the group surrounding the girl. She wished she could help, but at least Amber, Ty, Medic and the others seemed to know what they were doing. Staggering back inside, she approached Oscar. "There's also something I've got to talk to you and Saki about," she told him, voice lowered. "Some information I found out." Out of concern for Rheese, she projected the last part into Oscar's mind. "About Team Noble."

She winced, closing her eyes against surroundings that shifted in and out of focus as if she might faint. A squeak cut through the dizziness. "Ita!"

"Lacey..." Holding out an arm to keep her balance as she swayed, Sophia looked down at those fearful blue eyes. "It's nothing. It'll pass." Dammit, she needed to stop worrying her Pokemon like this.

Amber turned and sighed. As much as she wanted to reassure Sophia, she couldn't be sure how serious the girl's condition was. "Medic here's doing a good job," she replied. It was all she could say for certain.

That was when she noticed something else was wrong. Amongst the gathering of trainers, two people were nowhere to be seen. Alexis and Deneb.

"Just a moment..." Stomach sinking, Amber stood up and hauled her backpack onto her shoulders. For all she knew, whatever had hurt this girl was still out there, and Team Noble couldn't be far. While Alexis and Deneb were capable trainers, nobody could be too careful. "I'll be back as quickly as possible. It's just, Alexis, Deneb, I've gotta find them."

She hurried along the path, Tacita, Aeshna and Kyra all speeding alongside her. It didn't take long for her to spot Alexis, standing out amidst the passers-by in that elaborate outfit. Yet instead of her confident stride, she moved with a slow shuffle, seemingly lost in thought. Amber exhaled with relief. "Alexis!" She approached her, Tacita and Aeshna following...

But not Kyra, who instead bounded along the streetside flowerbed, crushing the plants. "Kyra! No, no come on, come along..." Ignoring Amber's pleas, the Rockruff gave a cheerful bark and jumped at a flock of Combees. They flitted out of the way, right into Alexis' path. "Ah! Sorry about that!"

While they didn't attack, the Combees went on the defensive, gathering around one with a red dot on its forehead. A female. A future queen. "It's ok, she was just playing," Amber explained, gesturing for Kyra to stay back. The bees, however, remained just as agitated, buzzing fiercely as they glared.

"Can't say I expected it either." Mara gave a humourless laugh. Listening to Felicia's advice, she nodded. "Heh, if there's a way to harness it, that'll be one good thing about this essence." Not that she knew whether to dare hope for such luck. "Thanks, that'll be great, so long as they actually agree to it."

She gave a worried glance at the ever-growing queue. Surely plant essences weren't that widespread. Either way, if she didn't take her place quickly, there'd be little chance of a refund. "Uh, just a moment," she told Felicia, heading over to the line.

It took more than just a moment. Mara's skepticism had proven correct, and she glared as scammer after scammer trudged away in shame. Conner, one of the few genuine plant essenced people, still had to be a total show-off about it. Mara folded her arms, inching forward with the line, trying not to think about the scorching heat. Or the idiot in front of her who dragged out his turn, insisting his retractable claws were in fact rose thorns. When he finally gave up and turned around, Mara noticed his sunglasses didn't quite conceal his cat eyes.

She sighed through her teeth. Her turn now, and getting irritable was something to avoid. She presented her ticket to the volunteer, who looked as tired as she felt, and hurried to the open space. The sooner this was over with, the better.

"Lemon essence," she said simply. Already, that urge to shrink back from all these people reared its head. "Which somehow translates to this." She pulled off one of her gloves, inhaled deeply, and held her hand out. Her fingers tingled, tiny sparks dancing around them. The scent of lemon rose into the air.

She curled her fingers, the sparks vanishing as quickly as they'd appeared. She hadn't meant to pull back her torso, but now it must be clear her own essence unsettled her. With her usual scowl in place, she tugged her glove on and headed towards the volunteer.

Amber turned her head. A girl staggered past, pale-faced and sweaty, in even worse shape than Rheese or Sophia by the look of it.

"Hey, everything ok there?" Amber called, rising to her feet. The girl paid no attention, if she even heard. Instead, she stumbled just as far as the exit before promptly collapsing.

Right away, Amber rushed to her side. "Hey... Hey can you hear me?" No reply. Wincing at the patch of red spreading across the girl's sleeve, Amber dug her medical kit from her backpack. Gently, she rolled up the sleeve, revealing bloodied bandages.

"Oh dear Arceus..." She donned a pair of gloves, removed the girl's jacket and unwrapped the dressings, grimacing at the small but deep lacerations etched into the her arms. Ok, first thing to do was get that bleeding under control. Applying pressure pads to the wounds, Amber secured them with fresh bandages. "Ty! We're going to need your Igglybuff's help." She didn't want a baby Pokemon involved, but considering the healing move the Igglybuff had demonstrated earlier, it was the best option. Already, several assistants headed over, as did Sophia who tottered as if close to passing out herself. The gym seemed to have become something of a clinic.

Turning back to the unconscious newcomer, Amber checked her breathing and pulse. Had this been some wild Pokemon attack? Or something to do with the Team Noble incident?

Taking another look over the brochure, Mara sighed. While she needed answers, philosophical theories would be no substitute for cold hard facts. Probably the best option though - ziplining would be fun and all, but the slightest panic from her could ruin everyone's day.

Bracing herself for the upcoming drudgery, she shuffled from the room, towards the line of people queuing to display their powers. She gave a nervous tug at her gloves - she'd be able to manage a small spark without hurting anyone, but she'd still want to keep a safe distance. Her eyes flicked around the area, settling on someone who'd spoken up earlier. The dark-haired woman who'd introduced herself as Felicia, also heading towards the queue with Ryker and his dog in tow. Overhearing Alonzo's question about another zapping incident, Mara huffed and rolled her eyes.

"So, about what you said earlier," she said, approaching Felicia. Best to skip small talk and get to the point. "You say you cater to essenced people, so... Would you happen to know how to mesh day-to-day life with electric powers? They're not exactly a great mix." The only thing she could think to do was put rubber sheeting all over her apartment. Which would mean she needed the money even more, but maybe a landlady could help with practical matters.

She whirled round at a yelp from the pavilion. A guy who'd had the oh-so-bright idea to climb to the top flailed before falling. Mara gasped, but luckily the guy landed on his feet, trying to save face with a showy pose. It looked like only his ego was hurt. Ok, and maybe his hand and feet.

Mara turned her blank stare from the show-off guy to Alonzo. "Well, there's your chance."
