Biography
Many centuries before the Great War, on the isolated island continent of Gomoro, the dragon-kind were essentially scattered throughout the terrible desert wasteland which is known to this day as the Red Dust. Legends endure of a wanderer, a man born of dragons that emerged from a mountain overlooking the desert and that he travelled, meeting and earning the trust and admiration of all he had met, a large nomadic tribe eventually forming around him. He intended to lead his people out of the desert, convinced he’d find a new home for them someday.
It was under the leadership of this man, called the Lord of Red Dust, that they had found the border between the wasteland and the lush fields belonging what was then the kingdom of Zamza, the dominant power of the continent at the time. Many years passed, yet the monarchy refused to allow the nomads entry into the land. In time, the Lord of Red Dust saw his people divide into two ideologies, each under the head of one of his two most trusted warriors. One called for a settlement by the border from which to live in peace and cooperation with the humans, whereas the other endorsed open conflict to take the land by force.
Tensions mounted and as the city of Senka rose to symbolize the willingness of many dragonutes to work with humans, others could not ignore what they felt belonged to them and soon raids and skirmishes on outlying Zamza settlements along the border erupted into outright war between both races, forcing the hands of all involved. The conflict lasted decades, costing the lives of millions. It was on the devastating assault on the Zamza capital city, that the Lord of Red Dust vanished without a trace, his ultimate fate a point of modern day speculation and contention.
Nevertheless, his loss is universally considered among dragonutes as the major reason their ancestors lost much of their will to fight. Eventually four powerful human warriors emerged to battle their way to Senka, eventually laying waste to the city and forcing its abandonment, ending the war. Retreating back to the wasteland, the dragonutes returned to their search for a suitable home, in time finding colossal mountain ranges that hid among them a vibrant valley, once home to an ancient race of giants, remnants of their once formidable civilization strewn across the landscape.
The valley which was rich with life, came to be called Wyrnerva, the dragonutes vision of heaven. However, even this oasis wasn’t enough to prevent disunity from arising once more, arguments of the past as well as the allocation of resources and power igniting infighting as never before. After years of civil instability, the newly crowned sovereign saw his enemies banished from Wyrnerva, a sizable crowd of which settling in what has been referred to colloquially as the Giant’s Graveyard, which held their best chance of survival due to many creatures’ odd tendency to gravitate towards the area to die.
And so, the dragonutes of Gomoro diverged mainly into two types over the years. Those of the valley are said to be blessed by the life energy contained within the valley and have armor like scales and powerful wings with which to soar through Wyrnerva as they please. Dragonutes of the wasteland however, have only better adapted to life in what is basically their punishment, their heritage from their forefathers. This state of separation has continued through Agni’s acquisition of Gomoro as a whole, leaving only the mountains surrounding Wyrnerva and the adjacent wastes under dragonute control. It has even continued beyond the Godfall and Great War, both occurring within Viranti’s lifetime.
Viranti was born to a warrior clan residing within the Giant’s Graveyard, with aspirations of reuniting his his fractured people at an early age. Although an adept hunter, he often found himself in trouble among the clan elders for his reckless behavior. It wasn’t long until his carelessness got the better of him and he was caught with a friend trespassing near Wyrnerva, afterwards being sent into an underground prison built into a deep and narrow ravine designed especially for inmates unable to fly. Known as The Tear, escape was all but impossible and prisoners were only just barely kept alive under severe living conditions.
His friend would not survive beyond decade one, but Viranti would go on to persevere until increasing instability within Wyrnerva’s dominion meant it could no longer allot resources to the control of the prison, the inmates being left behind to die. Fighting against fellow dragonutes and even humans for dwindling rations would certainly stamp out whatever idealism he had left in his childhood. Yet he survived, even narrowly avoiding being crushed when an earthquake collapsed much of the ravine. It was as he looked up from the dust and rubble that he saw a great light emanating from high above the Tear. That was the moment, he was chosen.
