Roman felt more than heard Mayet’s attack as she rested her soft athletic legs over his shoulders for a moment before leaping off away from the bear. Their accumulated strikes seemed to down the bear but it still had some life left in it. Bloody and breathing heavily Roman began to think of how to strike the bear further when a dagger flew past him and into the beast silencing the last of its struggles.

Munir looked ready to strike again if needed, that man’s aim was very good being able to land several shots in quick secession without hitting any of his allies. Mayet’s quick and well placed strikes combined with Nala’s ferocity and power were a good team. He was glad that in a pinch the trio could work well together without having to worry about glory hogs. Roman whispered a prayer in his old language about strength and being at peace before he noticed the owner of the dagger quickly came into view.

Resting his axe on his shoulder he smiled at Sadie and the others she brought with her, “It’s good to see you too Princess Sadie, it does look like your aim has improved. Of course I’m alright I would never do something so dangerous without proper precautions. I just hope the huntress that was injured is being taken care of.” Roman took a step back towards Mayet and away from the bear checking a small silver pocket watch in his pocket with a grimace.

“To answer your earlier comment, you are correct I did like it, it reminded me of home.” He paused for a moment smiling, “I have 16 brothers and sisters, four have passed away but I am the oldest and tallest. Which means my younger siblings like to climb all over me.” He said with a laugh.

With a sigh he looked to the others and smiled once again. “Mayet Munir, it was a pleasure hunting with you this glorious morning. I do hope we can do this again soon. But it would seem it is nearly 1pm and I have black smith lessons I have to give soon and must take my leave. Sadie I hope I see you there and I hope you all have a wonderful day.”

Roman took a moment to pick up his spear and give the others a moment to say anything to him they wanted to before leaving. He did so quickly, moving at a quick pace towards his warehouse to grab a few things before heading to the blacksmith. He knew a few of the other smiths he brought with him should be there to set up and begin the lessons if he was a little late.

Roman got back to his feet in a crouch holding the axe in his hand and staring at the beast. Mayet had delivered a strong blow with Nala exposing a noticeable weak spot and gaining the ire of the beast just before it would have gotten to him. The situation was bad but not dire as he took a second to observe the carnage and the actions of the others. Munir seemed to be intent on remaining at range but his shots have been well placed. Mayet like him still clung to a blade and someone had started to drag away the injured huntress or so it seemed.

Now he could only hope that Munir could land a few more hits while Nala kept up its attention long enough for him to make his move. Dropping the knife and griping the axe Roman took two powerful steps forward and lunged at the beast timing his axe to swing down on the open wound Nala had created. With the might of all of his time spent swinging his hammer, the weight from his body built carrying and molding steel and stone, the experience poured into everything he has created and all the days spent honing his fighting skills for moments like these where his safety is not guaranteed at all.

This wasn’t a time for goading or bragging, it wasn’t the place for who gets the kill. This was life at its fullest, kill or be killed, a quick death for the beast to end the threat of it hurting others forever and ending its misery.

Tilnak tilted his head slightly to look down the hall while also being able to peer down to the small girl with his hexagonal compound eyes. Taking in everything she said and committing it to memory, from the description of the creatures themselves. Everything was important and could potentially be lifesaving to them.

Naomi stepped back into her office saying that she was very busy and needed to continue with her work. He bowed with thanks and pulled something from his cloak. Slowly he stepped inside of her office and left a small flower that was growing in and around a couple small rocks, the roots keeping the small jumble of stones and dirt together. The flower smelled sweet but not overtly so. Nodding again he left back towards the others, carefully shutting her door on the way out.

The rest of his group was still gathered in the open area conversing in what seemed to him like a civil matter. Waiting for a time to step in and talk as he unknowingly shifted the small amount of dirt he had collected in his hand. Stepping in when he saw an opening he waited for a moment for the others to pay attention before dispersing the dirt into a thin disk.

Pulsing and swirling the dirt to make a close enough replica of the map. Pointing out the heavier forested swamp areas and whispering key notes of what he was told. “Nests… dark… fog… thick t-trees…” motioning to area’s south and away from the main routes and village areas.

Before he came up he did hear the others talking about their powers and abilities so once he figured everyone was ok with the details he stood up straight. Uncorking one of the bobbles on his person he gently pulled a small stream of water from it adding it to the dirt that he pulled back into a ball turning the combination to mud. Placing a seed from another small pouch on his sash, Tilnak planted the seed and gently began a coaxing motion. Within a few moments a small green sprout emerged quickly blooming into a small yellow flower that he then affixed the flower to his shoulder.

Holding up his hand he started to emit a bright glow that soon enveloped the group in a translucent but blurry shield around them. He only did this for a moment before he stopped believing it was a worthy display of his abilities. Now all that was left was to get going unless they were waiting for other people still.

Roman couldn’t help but give Munir a hearty laugh at his reasoning for a moment. Smiling but obviously thinking about what he said. His eyes glanced to Mayet for a moment then back to him. Looking down at the beaver Roman offered it to Munir. Turning for a moment to accept the praise from the huntress leading the event with a small bow before returning to Munir

“No friend no coin, you can have this as a favor. I give you my word that it will not put you or your family in a bad situation. I’m resourceful but sometimes I need help with things.”

Roman felt that it was a good proposition, a small favor for a beaver pelt was a good deal. Honestly there were several things from Alidasht that would be useful to his craft. The scorpion carapace would be fun to work with, to see how it could provide different colors, textures, and armor protectiveness. He would have to think about that one a bit more though, even some of the jungle wood is fun to work with and hard to get.

“Hey I would like to invite the two of you to something. Tonight is-“

He was cut off by a growl behind him and a panicked reaction from Munir’s horse. It was familiar like a ghost from his home. In just moments he realized what could have made that sound. Dropping the beaver to turn with his spear towards the noise he was met with something he did not expect. A large brown bear swiping the huntress to the side with little effort.

The beast charged at them with little abandon for its own sake. Bears like these were strong, powerful hunters that had the stamina and speed to run down even a horse if it wanted to. But they have poor vision and sometimes it can be hard for it to turn or stop while it runs. Roman not hesitating for a second charged at the bear.

“Flank it!”

He shouted without seeing what the others would do. Someone seemed quick on the draw and put several arrows towards the bear before he met with it. Both of their steps pushing them closer to each other his hunting spear gripped tightly in his arm the shimmer of the spears polished broad head glimmered in the sunlight. With a mighty thrust he did two things, first the spear would be aimed for its barrel chest at an angle where the other end of the spear might catch the ground and shove the spear further into the bear. The other was to dive to the side and away from the bear using his forward momentum to roll out of its reach. If he was able to roll out of the way he would draw one of his knives and his axe.

Tilnak stood still in the hallway pressed to the side of the door to try and stay out of the way of those passing by. Another man turned the corner sharply coming to an almost complete stop upon seeing him. The Belua tilted its head slightly at the reaction he got from the man. He was taller than some of the others his hair and eyes making him stand out more to him than some others.

His two smaller arms clearly meant for fine manipulation made some gestures for a moment as Tilnak was trying to see if this one understood the silent language used sometimes amongst the populace and certain soldiers. “Croc Crush?” was what he signed then seemed to think of something else.

Tilting his head for a moment he stopped and began pulling some of the dirt off of his cloak and into a small ball in one of his smaller manipulators. Holding it above one manipulator the other moved behind it, spreading the soil and small stones around in a flat line to say the same thing he signed earlier only this time in writing. “Croc Crush?”

He was pulled back from his thoughts on the conversation when the door opened suddenly and another Belua answered the door with a flurry of words and activities. They took a moment to examine the two standing there then began spewing information onto the two of them. Some of the information he was aware of some of it he was not but all useful. It was not what he was here for.

Tilnak quickly reformed the dirt he had accumulated into a very basic map of the south western region, again showing his fine control over earth. “Nest-ing Grr Groundsss?” he asked hoping she would give at least a rough estimate as to where they thought the main nesting or hunting grounds for the Makara in the area were.

Tilnak watched the others and their groups, it would seem they were all rather evenly divided. His group seemed to be more concerned with getting started quickly even if it seemed like there would be some friction in the team, something to be expected he mused to himself. Shifting in place slightly as they spoke of strategy, he couldn’t help but nod in appreciation to hector’s words about not slaughtering them all. Even magical beasts had a right to exist as much as the rest of them.

“Tilnak… can… guide… forest is… home.” Bringing one of his smaller arms up to rub his throat after he spoke clearly, not adjusted to it yet, a clear sign of living as a hermit and an outsider for most of his life.

Tilting his head slightly in thought about where they were going and what to expect and remembered he hadn’t been down in that area in some time. Getting a bit more information about the area would benefit them.

Placing his hand on his chest, “Return… sh-shortly.” Stepping away from the group still rubbing his neck towards where he thought someone said the researcher Naomi was located. Walking off down the hall to locate the placard. Eventually he came to a door that looked about right and knocked on the door.

It took roman a bit longer than he thought to join back up with the others, he wasn’t trying to hide his footsteps since he already bagged his prey that he held under his arm. A small trail of blood and water followed behind him through the lush green forest. It was the middle of summer, and the plants were in full bloom, flowers, small birds, and critters were abundant throughout the peaceful forest with only the occasional man-made sound piercing through the veil.

Walking up into the clearing he heard Munir call out to him, and he waved back with a smile. Stepping up closer as not to yell yet still giving the man a quizzical eyebrow raise at the again improper mention of his name. Munir was surely upset in his own way roman was sure.

“I had to dive after this beaver but still a good catch, this pelt will fetch a good price at the market or make a good fit for some clothes. I even heard that the perfume companies buy the scent glands.”

The beaver itself was about 4 feet long and weighed about 70 ish pounds by his count. A fine beaver for sure. He again seemed to approach Nala with just as much care as before, not showing fear but respect.

“Munir this is not the first time I have met you and I would presume us to be at least on friendly terms. So I must ask you, did my small joke about your hunting skills upset you earlier? You know very well that my name is Ravenwood, yet you have given me a few names so far today that are not my own.” He paused a few steps away from them with a smile.

“I do hope that this is you trying to be funny and not some underlining ailment you have not mentioned to us.”

He paused for a moment before bending down in front of Nala and offering the heart of the beaver to her, being careful of his fingers the heart was about the size of an apple.

“at least none of us came back empty handed. Some meat is better than nothing. Im sure the gods will approve of even this.”

glancing to Mayet with a smile.

Tilnak stayed as still as a tree watching the others and listening to what they have to say. Intently concentrating at the matter at hand as his antenna twitched and swayed, the overseer spoke and said what he had to. By the reactions some of the ones here were new while others seemed to be more experienced in their own way like he was. The options were laid out bear with no sugar coating in a blunt manner he approved of.

Again he watched the others make their decisions, some wanted the hard one then backed off due to a lack of experience some chose the magi Tec mission others the croc mission. He found himself torn as he stood in front of the mission choices. The magic tech mission was not interesting to him at all let the others deal with that one. The other two he found himself torn between. The croc one was messing with the natural way of things in the ecosystem the other was the opportunity to purify an area of the miasma and possibly fight abominations.

Still he hesitated and weighed his options as the others chose. His instincts were pulling him towards dealing with the crocs as the miasma could have traveled to the south towards that location and that mission could be more dangerous than the other. Looking to the ones that chose the necropolis compared to the croc crush he made his decision.

The necropolis team looked to be very well off and situated and he wasn’t entirely committed to this reaper job just yet. So Tilnak touched the Croc crush mission and moved over to where the others where seeming not to notice or take heed of the outburst from the other reaper. Lowering himself to be closer to their height he spoke in a rough whisper that was obviously uncomfortable for him to do.

“Tilnak… Will… Go…” ending by pointing at them and giving them a slight nod. Who knows maybe he can stop them from senselessly killing everything they came across.

“The massive claws from the stone crab would make a good trophy, caution is to be used when fighting them. It takes a team to immobilize it then the hammer needs to be used to strike it down, repetitive strikes in a line breaks it apart but the threat of dismemberment is always there. They provide a lot of meat plenty of food for several villages.”

Roman smiled at the two of them while the hunting was about to begin.

“The snow cats are sought after for their fur, in muscle mass they are about the same size as Nala but with their thick fur they look about twice the size. They have huge wide paws that make them nearly float across the snow, very difficult to track, more so to kill.”

Mayet’s comment about how she felt that her beauty was stifled while out hunting the scorpions made him smile. Yet the thought made him frown slightly internally, that instead of enjoying the beauty of nature she was still worried about her looks. but the fact she went hunting in those conditions in the first place was a good sign. He did like other people that enjoyed the outdoors as much as he did even if her killing intent was a bit higher than his own.

Roman wasn’t sure who Munir was talking to when he said ‘Atwood’ he couldn’t tell if it was a joke or the man was having a stroke likely just a joke. The giant tilted his head to the side yet again when he talked about getting shot, he had a spear not a bow. Perhaps he was still affected by whatever happened last night.

He couldn’t help but watch Mayet break off from the group to go hunt a snack, her posture changed to what he would expect from a hunter. Munir also galloped off in another direction with a falcon of all things. He knew of a few southern nobles that hunted with them but he always preferred an owl.

Standing alone in the forest for a moment gathering his bearings, listening to the rustle of the wind in the trees and the distant voices of other party’s the occasional sent of gunpowder or perfume wafted through the air. Roman did not wear any strong perfumes or hard shoes, all the better to lull prey into a false sense of security. His eyes began to pick up the subtle trails of small and medium game in the area so he too ventured into the forest following the sounds of a small creek.

Upon reaching the creek he could tell that the water level had dropped a few inches possible because of a blockage further upstream. With no new animal sign along the sandy creek edge he began walking up the creek being sure to stay just in the tree line, quietly glancing at every step as to not break any twigs, slow and steady, heel to ground first then slowly roll the bottom of the foot down to the toes. Every 15 to 20 steps he would stop look and listen to his surroundings paying attention to every detail.

The obstruction in the creek was in view now, the start of a new beaver dam protruded from a point in the creek with large stones on either side. There was a few places where water was still slowly pouring through and a few other places where he knew he could crawl to get a drop on anything that may have been working on the dam. Approaching one slow agonizing step at a time, spear in hand and the sound of his heart in his thought roman proceeded forward until he could see the entirety of the dam.

His prey was not there but a quick inspection of the shore line showed recent activity of a beaver eating and working to secure what looked to be a new place of residence as he did not see an obvious beaver hut. He didn’t have the time to set a trap so he would have to lure the giant rodent in to an ambush. Slowly moving back towards the base of the dam in a low almost belly crawl behind the small hill he observed the area from it was mostly tall grass but would make due. Pulling a few sticks from the dam to create water flow and the noise of running water resuming his position once he was finished spear in hand.

It took about five or ten minutes before he saw activity on the small section of swollen creek. A ripple in the water told him that something was moving out there and moving towards him. Watching as the beaver surfaced looked around then headed for the dam. Roman waited as still as he could be as it continued to draw closer. Beavers had an instinctual need to stop the sound of running water, the fur traders back home talked about it in great detail. It would seem that they were correct as the rodent pushed itself up onto the dam and started repairing the holes he had made.

He only waited a few moments more before getting up and throwing the spear at the beaver. His spear hit its tail but it still attempted to return to the water. Springing up and lunging after it with his axe in hand Roman dove into the water after the creature just barely getting a good grip on its back leg before it vanished into the murky water. Pulling the beaver back onto land was a bit trickier than he thought as he was constantly trying not to get bit by its giant teeth. Once on land it tried its best to get away but a swift strike to the back of its head with the back of his axe ended all resistance.

Roman took account of himself for a moment then his catch, he was soaked but he had all of his things still. The beaver didn’t suffer any damage to its pelt just its tail and he didn’t hit the scent glands it has so that was a plus. He spoke a quick prayer to the animal thanking it for its pelt and meat promising it that it will not be wasted. Making a small incision on its stomach he proceeded to carefully remove everything from inside it. The heat of the day would be quick to spoil the meat of a creature like this if left inside.

As part of his hunting ritual he left half of what he removed in the creek and the rest on the edge of the creek this way the other denizens of the forest would be able to feast on what was left. Walking back towards the forest he paused for a moment to mark a rune on one of the larger trees with the blood of the animal. The simple bind rune represented a combination of luck and protection for the area with the life of the beaver as payment and thanks for the harvest. The beaver still had quite the weight to it he noticed while he walked back towards the group.
