And their collective time in costume comprises less than one minute of the whole movie. Not to mention Madame Web was already played to perfection by Stan Lee’s WIFE in the 90’s.
Personality: Thomas comes with his own unique brand of ADHD. His interests and emotions can vary on the day to day, but when he finds something he loves... well he sticks to it. If you engage him in a conversation on one of his interests, you'd better be prepared because he can and WILL talk your ear off on it. In addition, he's also notorious for caring about other people in his life; sometimes even more than his own. If it means he can be of help, he's usually the first person to volunteer. He hates being idle or being stuck in a routine. In his mind, stagnation is worse than death.
Backstory: Asking Thomas where he's from would get you a pretty unusual response: "Everywhere". Born an only child, both of his parents were required to travel the country for their respective jobs. As a result, Thomas has rarely lived anywhere longer than two years. He didn't develop many friendships past the surface level, and eventually he stopped trying to get close to people because he knew he wasn't going to be there very long. With his family being his only real-world connections, Thomas took to the internet and his video games as a means of finding his friends.
It was during this time that Thomas discovered the Rift Warriors franchise and its vast player base. After watching videos of his favorite Let's Players try their hands at Rift Warriors III: Shadow of the Rift, he practically begged his parents to buy him the game and necessary console for his birthday. They obliged and soon Thomas was spending most of his free time jumping into the Rift Warriors world, learning the game, and interacting with the online community. Everything about the game excited him. From the hilariously broken yet fun mechanics of Rift Warriors I, to the bizarre and enticing storyline present throughout the games. In between school and normal life, Thomas could be found drawing his favorite characters, or deep diving into theory videos online where people were trying to piece together the lore behind the Rift. Naturally, there were other games he was passionate about, but Rift Warriors was his undisputed favorite.
It was during college when everything changed for Thomas. For the first time in his life, he was finally tied down to one location. Attending classes, seeing the same faces, being in this routine for four years... It bored Thomas to no end. With little to do between classes, Thomas decided on a whim to take up streaming his playthroughs of the latest game: Rift Warriors VII: Bloodlines. Not the BEST game in the series by far, but it was new enough that it got more attention on his channel compared to other games. At the urging of his few followers, Thomas opted to enter an online tournament for RW VII. Despite being the underdog, he managed to reach third place! A downpour of new followers flocked to his channel and soon Thomas felt a new path in life was finally opening up for him.
It wasn't long after that RedeyeSamurai became a well-known name in the RW community. From competing at tournaments, making strategy guides for his fans, and climbing the online leaderboards, it wasn't an exxageration to say that Rift Warriors had finally allowed Thomas to carve out a permanent place for himself. When college finally ended and Thomas was living on his own, streaming became his primary source of income and Rift Warriors games kept paying his bills.
It all came to a head when RedeyeSamurai made an appearance at the first ever world championships for the newly launched ninth entry in the franchise. Thomas was invited to compete and the event was a dream come true for him. He got to meet fans, fellow players, and even get a chance to hang out with people he'd only ever seen on the other end of a video call. When the time came, Thomas played harder than he'd ever done in his life. When the battle was over, Thomas was crowned world champion! Thomas reveled in the accomplishment for about a week before something inside him changed. He'd made it to number one, but now it felt like there was nowhere else to go. He was stuck in another rut.
Thomas wound up stepping away from Rift Warriors for a considerable period of time. When questioned, he simply told his fans he wanted to try other forms of content. That is, until one night when he was watching a stream of this year's E3...
Rift Warrior Character: Takumi Ryuga
Debut: Rift Warriors I
Rift Warrior Backstory: Having been around since the very first entry, Ryuga has become the 'unofficial' poster boy for Rift Warriors. A samurai from the late Sengoku Period, Ryuga was a vassal of the Azai clan before they were eradicated by the army of Oda Nonunaga. Having survived the massacre, Ryuga went into hiding and spent years wandering the country of Japan as a Ronin.
With the Oda's forces seeking any remaining members of the Azai clan, Ryuga was forced into a life of crime as a mountain bandit while struggling to survive. Armed with his katana and tanegashima rife, Ryuga established himself as a man no traveling merchant wanted to cross on a dark road. Eventually, after the pasing of the Oda, Ryuga would see his sword taken from him during the sword hunt in 1588. With few options left to him, and no way to die 'honorably', Ryuga had taken up refuge in a mountain cave and resigned himself to his fate.
However, as he sat there, a strange red light appeared in the back of the cave. Following it lead Ryuga to a strange portal that connected to a lavishly designed temple. It was here that Ryuga met the Messenger. Ryuga now spends his days wandering the Rift and seeking out opponents all in the vain hope that he can be sent home to prevent the downfall of his clan.
Right Warrior Powers: Ryuga's nickname among the Rift Warriors community is the "Firearm Demon", and it's a well earned title. Starting with the first game, he was one of the few characters who had proper ranged capabilities and his destructive prowess has only increased with time. On top of his deadly skill with his tanegashima, the Messenger granted Ryuga the knowledge of firearms, as well as the power to generate and manipulate gunpowder.
Armed with futuristic knowledge and the limitless potential of the Rift, Ryuga has created weapons years ahead of his time. By producing gunpowder from within his own body, the samurai always has a ready supply of makeshift explosions on hand both to deal damage as well as keep his enemies away.
Other: - Thomas has actually played every character on the RW roster. He knows everyone thinks Ryuga is overrated, but he's way too fun to use. - Being one of the oldest characters in the franchise, Ryuga's design has undergone a number of changes across the various entries. In the later games, players could unlock Ryuga (Sword Mode) as a secret character in which his clan was never destroyed. - Ryuga has several emotes that reference old school samurai movies and classic anime. His defeat emote is literally the Yamcha Pose.
@Sanity43217 I originally limited it to 5 slots because I didn’t know if people were going to be interested, but I can widen it to the top 10 players instead so sure.
The year is 2045, and the world is gaming community is holding its breath as legendary video game developer Ryuichi Masada is set to announce his latest project. The auditorium and streams go wild he reveals Rift Warriors X - the latest entry in his trademark fighting game series Rift Warriors - only to be stunned when, after the teaser, Masada declares that X will not only be the final entry in the series! Adding to the shock, Masada claims he's only produced FIVE copies of the game which will be distributed to the top five Rift Warriors IX players worldwide in a few months time. What followed was a mad dash by players across the globe to climb the competitive ladder in the hopes of reaching the top five and becoming a candidate for earning this new game.
When the digital dust settled, the five players were recognized and each received a copy of Rift Warriors X. However, when they started up the game, there were no fighters available. All they saw was a blank slate on the character selection screen. Suddenly, each of the players are sucked into their respective gaming consoles and wake up only to find themselves in the world of Rift Warriors! Somehow, the players have been turned into the five characters they mained when they battled in the ranks to win their copies of X. What has caused this to occur? How will they escape? What is the secret of Rift Warriors X? Apply to join and find out!
Ever wonder what it would be like if various characters from across history could battle it out? Well that's what Ryuichi Masada dreamed about ever since he was in grade school. Upon graduating and joining up with a fledgling game company, Okami Sun Games, Masada created the first ever Rift Warriors game. Rift Warriors was a beat'em-up fighting game where fictional characters from across time were sucked into a pocket dimension known only as The Rift. When inside, they were tasked by a strange Entity known as "The Messenger" to battle against the other summoned warriors and earn their way home. To make things more 'interesting' The Messenger granted each warrior summoned a unique set of superhuman abilities depending on the era in which they were summoned and attuned to their unique characteristics.
With each passing sequel, more warriors would find themselves being dragged into The Rift. As the series went on, the lore behind The world of The Rift as well as the enigmatic Messenger would grow as well. However, the lore that was revealed was rarely - if ever - enough to explain the plot of the games, often leaving FNAF-sized debates going on in various internet forums. With the announcement of Rift Warriors X, Masada claimed that "all will be revealed" which led many to believe this would be the game that finally gave a clear answer as to what the real story of Rift Warriors actually was. That made the limited release and subsequent competition all the more surprising when it happened.
So for this rp you will be making two characters. The first will be your character. This is the player who became one of the top 5 Right Warriors IX players in the real world. In addition, you will be making a second character who will serve as your player's 'main' in the game world. This character can be from any point in human history, and will have unique abilities based on their time period. (For example, a Viking character may have the ability to manipulate ice and snow, or a Cold-War Russian soldier could manifest nuclear bombs or weaponize radiation). Make sure to apply the character's abilities into the respective movesets.
Ideally, the Rift Warriors character would be a fictional person from whatever time period you choose, BUT I'm open to the possibility of non-human characters so long as you check with me first before submitting it. Outside of that, you are free to develop the character's backstory and powers as much as you wish. Just don't make them overly broken or the players would be screaming at the devs for not fixing an unbalanced character.
As for posts, I'd ideally like at least two paragraphs per post on this one to keep the story moving since this one is going to be exposition heavy at the start, but that's just a guideline. With that being said, the character sheet outline is posted below. Let's have some fun, and I'll see you in The Rift!
Player Name:
Faceclaim: If applicable
Nationality: What country are they from?
Screen Name: What screen name do they go by?
World Ranking: Where did your character finish on the world rankings for RW IX?
Age: Self Explanatory
Personality: What is your character like?
Backstory: Tell us a bit about your player? How did he/she get into playing Rift Warriors? Who is their main? How did they react to the Right Warriors X announcement?
Rift Warrior Character: Who is your character's main in Rift Warriors?
Rift Warrior Faceclaim: If Applicable
Debut: What game did this character first appear it? (mostly for flavor, but have some fun with it ;)
Rift Warrior Backstory: Be as detailed as you like about this, but this is a simple origin for who the Rift Warrior was, and how they were pulled into the Rift
Right Warrior Powers: What powers did the Rift Warrior receive from The Messenger?
Other: You can leave this blank if you want, but this is just a slot for any 'extra' info that doesn't fit in the above categories (Like, Dislikes, Quirks, etc.)
@Morgannis That should be fine. I figured it was the case, but I realized too late - as a writer usually does - that I didn’t think of how a timeline would work for Rift Warriors as a franchise given that most major games spend years in development.
@Morgannis A good first entry. One thing I want to point out, Rift Warriors is a LONG running franchise in this universe. For references sake, think of it like Mortal Kombat or Pokémon in this universe. Most people who were there for the very first game are going to be a bit on the older side.
Other than that, individual moves are fine. However what I meant was the characters in the game are granted unique “super powers” that their move sets are based around. For example, Capt. Wickham could become the sea herself and can summon creatures, weapons, and “drowned sailors” from her body to attack.
