Somehow, in the few short minutes that Mathias had wandered around the tables, he had managed to get himself stuck between two mothers trying to introduce their daughters to him. The man had only been toasting to his late wife before the two older women sneaked their way to him. Both ladies, Lady Melnyk and Lady Santos wished for their daughters to share the first dance of the evening with him. And while Mathias truly felt flattered, he did not wish to dance with two ladies who would very obviously rather dance with each other than with him.

Mathias had endured enough of both ladies as he began to search for a way out. And once they began talking about children he finally decided it was time to bail. His eyes darted around the ballroom for any way out until he spotted a new face. Golden hair framed the delicate features of the unnamed lady as she twirled around when the door closed.

"My apologies, Lady Melnyk and Lady Santos, I must excuse myself. I see that a friend of mine had just arrived." Mathias bowed to the ladies before turning on his heels and walking away from the two women before they had the opportunity to protest or chance after him.

Golden hair framed her delicate features as she spun around as the door closed behind her. From his spot, he could clearly see that she was not very excited to be at the ball.

Mathias approached the lady, steps light and quiet as to not startle the lady again. He greeted her with a welcoming smile and a bow. "My Lady I would like to welcome you to the ball- I apologize for the sudden introduction but I am Sir Mathias Larsen." He glance back seeing both of the ladies he had been talking to were looking at them. He could clearly see both seemed unhappy. "And I am in need of your help."

"I so desperately need a way out of a predicament. Would you grant me the honors of escorting you to perhaps the food tables, Lady...?" Mathias looked at her with pleading eyes, hoping that she would say yes. Escorting her to the food tables would give him enough distance and time for them to lose interest and move on to their next victim.

As soon as she was alone by the wine table Nahir let out the breath that she had been holding for what seemed forever. The sweet aroma of the wine tickled Nahir's nose as she inhaled. Her shoulders seemed to relax a bit as she picked up one of the wine glasses and put it up to her lips with a shaky hand. She thought she'd be able to hold out for the night, or at least long enough until everyone got drunk enough to not pay much attention to Nahir so she could sneak out to one of the empty music rooms.

Wine would have to do for now.

Her brief greeting with the Prince and Princess of Varian had been pleasant enough, checking off some of her many boxes of the mental list she had made. She still had to introduce herself to the Caesonian Princes but the two were currently with their father. King Edin also looked busy talking to two of his sons so now wouldn't be the best time to approach, especially after seeing the two Princes' faces. During her various stays in the palace, Nahir had the... pleasure of enjoying the King's company during dinner. He had been rather crass and easy to read. She had figured out pretty quickly that the man had the largest ego of anyone she had met- and Nahir lived with the Grand Vizier. Queen Alibeth, on the other hand, was more agreeable than her husband. She felt for the woman now watching how she reacted to whatever her husband was saying.

And then there was Prince Wulfric and his sister. Nahir knew very little about the prince, or any of them aside from the fact they were royalty. While she was not particularly worried about Mayet, she was more concerned about the Prince. From her spot, she could tell that Mayet's interest had already been peaked, and the young woman was not the best at being coy. Nahir admired her sister for being upfront and honest, but there was always a time and place to be that and not to be.

But anyone who could not accept Mayet was not worthy of her.

Nahir looked away from the King and Queen when she felt eyes on her. She turned to see a familiar and welcoming face approach her. An easy smile graced her lips when she spotted Saiya. Nahir allowed herself to crack open a door with a sigh of relief as her friend settled next to her.

"And it has just begun, my dear." Nahir looked at the woman next to her. Saiya had become one of her closest and more valued friends in the past years after Esrin passed away. They had mourned and healed together, something that Nahir treasured in her heart.

"I-" Nahir looked down at the wine glass. She had been so afraid at the moment. Seeing her father fall like that and the guards react so quickly- she had thought the worse those few seconds. Two people close to her had already been taken away from her and she did not wish for her father to be another. "I'm fine." She smiled at her friend again, putting the glass down on the table again and reaching over to take Saiya's free hand. "Are you alright?" Her eyes soften a bit and it almost felt like they were teenagers again at one of the balls back home. "You look amazing Saiya, beautiful really." She gave her hand a small squeeze before letting her go.

"You should go on and mingle, don't worry about me- you know I can take care of myself. My father and uncle will probably keep an eye out for my brothers and sisters." Nahir looked over to Layla, wondering what she could be thinking after their father's lecture. "I'll keep an eye on them too, so you relax and have some fun." Nahir hooked their arms together and held her almost empty glass of wine. "Anyone caught your eye?" Nahir turned to look towards the ballroom then at Saiya with an excited smile.

Nahir wasn't surprised when she heard her father scolding Mayet and Layla. Both of them were always so quick to act rather than to wait and assess the situation. While Mayet was the youngest of the three daughters, her behavior could be excused but Layla- she was supposed to be the example. The nod the Sultan had given her told her that she had been right in keeping quiet and not drawing attention to herself- sparing her from the Sultan's angry scolding and public humiliation in front of the royals and nobles of the other two kingdoms. Amir seemed to have the same idea as her, but he'd been more outspoken and public about his own opinions, Nahir had shot her older brother a glare as he had finished his speech but covered it with a smile before anyone could look at her. Now the other royals would see him as the more merciful one and more fit to become the next Sultan. Thankfully, it didn't matter what others thought.

The punishment her father settled for was probably meant for Layla and Mayet as well. Nahir on the other hand wondered if she could perhaps convince the Duke to bring his ferret along for one of the dinners. Kayra, her Bombay cat, would love a playmate aside from Nala during their stay here. But that would come later, seeing at the Duke was still a mess on the floor and was being surrounded by others.

The second Shehzadi stayed close by her father's side but far enough for others to ignore her, looking at every noble and royal that approached the Sultan analyzing everything about them. From their choice of clothing to their hair and the way they attempted and butchered the Alidasht bow. It wasn't only those who approached her father but also her siblings. Mayet and Munir were quick to forget the whole ordeal and go on their way to mingle with the foreign nobles as if they hadn't been demanding blood be spilled over the ballroom floor. Amir had also excused himself, going off to tables of food.

She had stayed quiet, silently judging everyone with a critical eye until her father dismissed himself. Nahir turned to her father, bowing perfectly and staying bowed until her father left. She straightened out, examining those around her for a second before approaching the small group.

Both the Prince and Princess of Varian along with their companions had approached the Sultan to introduce themselves all the while Nahir stood to the side silently. When her father excused himself, she was left there alone with them. She had stayed quiet until her father was gone.

"His Royal Highness, Prince Felix, Lady Thea, and Lord Leo it is a pleasure to meet you." Nahir turned to look at the prince of Varian, examining the pale features of the prince before moving to Lady Thea. She could see some resemblance between her and Lord Leo. "Her Royal Highness Princess Beatrice," She smiled now, golden eyes looking over the princess' dress and delicate features. "The rumors are true of your beauty, I do hope my dear sisters did not sour the evening. The night is still young and there is plenty of wine to continue the celebrations."

Nahir could see Lady Thea's brother from the corner of her eyes as she spoke to the Princess of Varian but she did not wish to engage him directly- at least not yet. "Please extend my apology to Duke Lorenzo and his daughter, I am afraid if I approach the man right now I will spook him further than my dear sister Mayet already has." There was real concern in her voice as she continued to play the pacifist.

"Now if you could excuse me, I have to try the Caesonia wine and hope sweet and strong as they say." She smiled again, glancing at the Heir of Stravy before taking her leave in search of wine and a second to gather her thoughts.

The events that transpired in the span of a few minutes had stunned the Knight of Varian. His gloved hand rested tentatively on the hilt of the small dagger at his waist, watching with everyone else as Sultan Raif and the rest of the nobles tried to delegate a punishment for Duke Vikena. Mathias felt for the poor man, while he was not versed in the politics and gossip of this court, he was aware of what had happened to Lorenzo. The passing of his wife had shocked so many people in this Kingdom and had reached the Varian court in just a few weeks. Mathias sympathized with the man in that regard, but as a noble, he should have been educated on who would be attending the ball, especially when the Alidasht were the guests of honor and it looked like the rumors of their temperament were true- partly true.

Person after person approached the Alidasht's ruined entrance in hopes of pushing a foot in, drawing some attention towards themselves, defending Lorenzo, or just to butt in. By the time Sultan Raif was ready to announce his decision in the matter, Mathias had concluded that there would be no blood spilled tonight. With a crisis averted thanks to the Sultan's light and yet cruel punishment Mathias made his way towards one of the servants carrying flutes of champagne.

Mathias could only hope that Lukas wouldn't grow up to be that impulsive - or entitled. He would not stand if his son thought others less than him, no matter their class, sex - anything just because he was a noble. Mathias was always careful when Lukas began to show any signs of being spoiled. Sir Oliver loved to give his son gifts, always saying that Lukas would grow up to be a good knight or noble or even a prince. It worried Mathias that his son would come to hate him due to his own upbringing. So instead of leaving Lukas with Oliver in the Larsen manor, he brought his son with him. While he was here not on duty, but as a guest thanks to Sir Oliver, Mathias would have more time to watch Lukas and enjoy the month-long break for his duties.

Fortunately, Mathias decided that a ball would not be a suitable place for a three-year-old so Lukas stayed in Mathia's designated room with his nanny, Emma. If Lukas had been here while the Alidasht were demanding heads he would be the first one out of the ballroom if blood had been drawn.

After taking one of the flutes that the servant offered him, Mathias began to walk around the ball now that the music returned and other nobles began to talk again. Most likely about the events that had transpired in the last few minutes. He'd only been a noble himself for a few years now, and Mathias still had trouble finding the correct etiquette when he was left alone to roam with others. He considered returning to the side of King and Queen Camille but he was not on duty and they would most likely dismiss him and encourage him to mingle.

"You would have loved this." Mathias looked around him. The dresses, the drama, the food- everything. Karla would have been thrilled to see the Alidasht royal family and taste the food of Caesonia. He raised his flute slightly, toasting to his late wife before taking a sip of the champagne. His nose wrinkled and his brows furrowed together. Gods, he hated the taste of champagne.

It's true
True it follows me around
Nothing to lose
Wouldn't miss it anyhow
It ain't the letting go, it's more about the things that you take with
Uh-uh
And I can feel it getting closer with every kiss
You gotta beat or join them
Try to act surprised
Just flip a coin 'cause I'm too bored to lie

There wasn't much Nahir could do from the back of the formation. Seeing the guards and servants stumble until they lost their footing- watching her father and uncle fall to the floor made her stomach twist. An icy cold shiver ran down her spine as she rushed forward just as Layla fell too, but ignored the eldest of the Sultan's children and continued towards her father. Nahir helped the guards pick up the Sultan, brushing the front of his fabric with a worried look on her face. It was evident in her features that Nahir was concerned about her father, the way she made sure he still looked regal as he demanded the head of the idiotic Duke that had caused this.

The Duke's head would already be on the floor if they were back home. But they were not.

"Father," Nahir said low enough for only for the Sultan and Grand Vizier to hear. "please consider their offer of compensation- perhaps find a suitable punishment for the Duke, but we cannot expect them to give us his head." Nahir looked at her father, golden eyes pleading to him as she played the part of the pacifist daughter before turning to help the Grand Vizier up to his feet. Nahir hoped that they would see reason. If King Edin denied their demands, it would show that he has no respect for them- for the Sultan.

"We are better than them." Nahir's voice was still hushed as the man she had been eyeing presented himself, followed by the Prince. She knew that the Grand Vizier was level-headed and would see what she was trying to do.

Nahir bowed her head to the Sultan before turning to the eldest. Nahir walked next to Layla, reaching up to brush the curls from her shoulder to their respected place before smiling at the beautiful snake. Layla was perfection, she was the embodiment of Alidasht royalty, and she must look so. These foreigners will see her sister as nothing but that.

There was a glance towards Lady Vikena, but her attention was with the man who introduced himself as Leo Smithwood, Heir of Stravy. Golden-like eyes took in the freckles that adorned his cheeks and the way his hair curled at the nape of his neck. It was just a mere second before she turned her attention towards her younger sister.

Nahir didn't expect any less from Mayet. While Layla was meticulous and cunning, Mayet was the one with the fiery persona. The youngest of the sisters burned as bright as the fires of Genasea or Yil, the Sun Goddess herself. She was a woman of pride, a woman who was not afraid to demand what was hers- and Nahir admired Mayet for that.

"Dear sister," Nahir stood next to Mayet, eyes looking at the man who had humiliated them. Her eyes moved to Prince Wulfric, eyeing him briefly before turning her attention back to Mayet. "merciful as always, giving Duke Vikena the grand opportunity to take responsibility for his actions. A noble gesture that I am sure he will appreciate." She did not address the Duke directly, deeming him as nothing but vermin. Something that was to be quashed for the humiliation he had caused them- but Nahir knew better than to word her feelings if she was trying to push the situation towards a diplomatic route.

The heavy crown, simple by Alidasht's standards, once belonged to her mother. Decorated with intricate designs of the many flowers from their kingdom and one single ruby gifted to mother by her father. It was a piece that Nahri treasured dearly and one that she was rarely seen without. It had been a gift for her tenth birthday. Nahir had been complaining that if Layla had a crown, so should she. Such a bratty request. Nahir still wondered how her mother and father put up with months of complaints until her mother finally gifted her one.

Things were so much more simple then, they were all young and had nothing to worry about. No schemes, no spying, so false smiles, and half-truths. No lies. Kahrem was still with them, their mother too. Nahir often wondered what their mother would think of them if she were alive. What would she think of Munir's free spirit, or of Layla's distance and even more of Mayet's fiery ways? Of Amir? What would she think of him? Who would Kahrem be?

What would she think of Nahir? Would her mother be proud that she became a diplomat for their kingdom? Would she try to stop Nahir from sneaking off with some of the other nobles in their court or from slipping away from the Royal Palace late at night?

"And Munir, Nahir... Please behave yourselves... Especially among other women and men."

Nahir hadn't realized that their entrance had started already.

She shot a smile at her sister, perfectly lined lips with red curled at the ends just the slightest. Her piercing golden eyes, surrounded by golden freckles like the night sky looked at Mayet as if she was asking the impossible to them. And she was. How could she, their sister, not realize that it was in their nature to seek and reap what was rightfully theirs?

"You ask too much of us, my dear sister." Nahir looked away from Mayet to examine the ballroom. She had been here before, on her tour of the palace the first time she visited Sorian as a diplomat. It had been empty then, and even then the architecture and beauty of it had taken her breath away. Now- full of people, decorations, and food- it was something out of their fairytales. While it did not compare to the grand ballrooms and halls of Alidasht, it was beautiful nonetheless.

Their entrance, while a bit more tamed, was grand. Nahir had suggested keeping the elephants back home. She knew how the King of Caesonia would react to such as extravagant entrance for their first arrival at their host's kingdom. So when Nala announced their entrance. Nahir could see that King Danrose was not at the slightest happy to see the veiled women dancing or the guards- and definitely not the tiger.

Nahir loved it.

"Sister Nahir, look. Fresh prey..."

"My dearest brother Munir, we shouldn't scare them away too soon." Nahir spotted a man with dark curly hair that reminded her of a lion's mane. Despite the clean-shaven face, his expression when Nala roared was nothing but wild. It excited her.

Nahir, like the rest of her siblings, showed her respect to the Crown of Caesonia her gold-painted arms crossed over her chest, making the ornate golden necklace chime quietly as she followed her father's example. Some of her golden beaded curls fell over her shoulder and obscured her vision from her siblings, but Nahir did not have to see to know who had made a mockery of their bow. She had to hide the small amused smile as she straightened back up.

When the formal entrance was over, Nahir stood by her siblings awaiting their introductions. Although, Nahir couldn't help herself from smiling when she heard the applause from one lady a few ways away from them. Nahir wondered if she was drunk, or just lost in the excitement she hadn't realized she'd be the only one clapping. Either way, it raised her curiosity.
