The thing is, I kept the descriptions skimpy, but there is a law of unintended consequences attached to the various options. Positive and negative modifiers are given for each item (even the flaws) but it is a matter of me knowing and you speculating...that's to maintain a whiff of Murphy's law in this whole situation.



Once you've done this, it's time to do the rest of the nation...there are parts of this sheet that will be determined with complete randomness. You will create an island nation and also write some cultural details, but things like what sort of resources you have, including the military, will be rolled randomly. No, it's not fair, but yes, it ought to be interesting.

Land inward on the mountain slopes the dense tropical rainforest only makes way for farming terraces cultivating mostly coffee and hemp.

History:
In 1661 Captain Alfonso do Maio, sailing under Portuguese flag, set foot on the uninhabited island he would later name after the month he arrived. Colonisation followed and a large number of slaves were transported to the island to work in the fields cultivating fruits and coffee. Despite conflicts with the Dutch and British in the region, the Ilha do Junho remained under Portuguese control and slowly grew over the years. On 7 September 1822, when Brazil declared independence from Portugal, Junho was incorporated into the Empire of Brazil. In the following decades Junho was generally ignored and when the empire collapsed in 1889 the small island became a Brazilian colonial territory. In the early 20th century, with Portugal in turmoil, Junho welcomed a new wave of Portuguese immigrants bringing with them new and exotic political ideas.

The island's Republican Party talked openly of independence but since the people on the mainland barely knew of Junho's existence and Brazil descended into a decade of dictatorship, nothing happened. In the second world war the Junholese army formed part of the Brazilian Expeditionary Force that fought alongside the allies in Italy. Finally in 1945, when the Brazilian dictator Vargas was deposed, the Republican Party declared an independent Democratic Republic of Junho. Naturally, the Republican Party won the nation's first ever elections with a landslide victory. The Republican Party was of course also the only existing political party at that time.

The next elections 5 years later were cancelled due to an unfortunate voting ballot shortage. However, two years later the president still managed to lose his post after a night of high-stakes poker in the Odimera Beach Hotel (✩✩✩✩✩) when, in a drunken stupor, the president gambled away his presidency. The lucky winner of the historic poker game was Amando Erasmo Furtado: real estate developer, prominent Republican Party member and backgammon extraordinaire. As the constitution listed no law that forbade betting one's post in a game of cards, Amando Furtado was inaugurated as Junho's new president. Under his leadership, Junho, which was known only for its coffee and weed, was turned into a popular tourist destination. After completing his first term, President Amando Furtado was re-elected in 1957 with an overwhelming victory gathering an impressive and believable 95% of the votes.

Name: The Serene State of Santisaria

Demonym: Santisarian

Description: Nestled behind a large mountain range, with its eyes to the sea, Santisaria was created by the Serene Republic of Venice as its only overseas colony. When Austria took over, and again during the years of violence and upheaval in the eastern hemisphere, people with lots of money seemed to flock to the isolated nation in their hour of need. Headed by a Patricianship with intelligent men at the helm, the nation grew steadily into a strong banking capital - rivaling even Switzerland in its value.

It was only on the cusp of World War II that Santisaria reached the public eye, however. Serving as a home to hundreds of thousands of really rich Jews running from Antisemitism, and lots of poor Eastern Europeans and Arabs uprooted by conflict, the Santisarians were viewed internationally as saviors for sending these poor and unlucky folk straight into the iron mines to feed the ‘war effort’. Serving as host to Naval Station Cape West and a squadron of US Navy cruisers, it remains a strategic haven for naval operations in the area.

The premier banking institution for much of the free world, it has massive revenues - and the possibility of a Cape South Naval Air Station offers the promise of a new air force for the flagging nation’s weak army.

Government: Authoritarian Dictatorship

Head of State: The Patrician, a gaunt and tall man with a pair of angry and piercing eyes. When he speaks - rare as it is - a flurry of cusswords accompany a clipped and well-practiced tone. A former Secret Agent serving in the OSS during Santisaria’s involvement in the war, he was a hero on his return to the nation. During the reign of the last patrician, an ineffectual man who was essentially rubber-stamping the high council’s democratic plans, he was a vocal and vulgar critic that rose the people in revolt.

On April 1st, the day of dead fools, the Patrician arrived with a white flag to discuss terms with his predecessor. When the latter arrived, the Patrician dropped his flag, blew a rasberry, and blew six holes in the man’s chest. All the Gendarmes threw down their weapons in response. He has served with administrative brilliance since.

Geography: Nestled inside a harsh and steep mountain range, in a valley full of trees and forests, Santisaria does not lend itself to a strong military tradition. Defended by its impassible terrain and with a sea protected by foreign powers, the many towns and villages east of Salissa dot the countryside’s rare but bountiful spice fields. Ships trawl on the calm coast, catching seafood, and iron mines dig deep beneath the mountains themselves.

Description: The entire nation is Erasmus' plaything; he owns all the businesses on the island including the considerable farming and plantation holdings on the Island. The island is well known for two things; it's almost enslaved work force and the extravagance of their 'well-meaning' overlord. The majority of the people live in a somewhat destitute state albeit somewhat aided by the prevalence of a local rum manufacturing sector using the surplus of sugar cane to produce a rum so feral most people would pay not to drink it. The Carenthians take it as their one luxury in life and as the most gracious their leader would be; unless you joined the military at least. The armed forces are provided for in a way that should ensure their loyalty; as long as the wild parties thrown by His Most Esteemedship continues. Erasmus lives a life of wanton luxury parked up in the People's Palace; a monolithic building that outweighs every other building in the land having been built using tonnes of marble, concrete and luxurious woods. The presidential motorcade is a common sight throughout the island; as is the fleet of Presidential racecars.

Name: Free Democracy of Quanko
Demonym: Quankan

Description: Originally a Tuscany colony interest was lost in the colony earl in it's history and largely ignored by other colonial powers for having little value. Being ignored as it was it became a pirate and smuggler haven with men coming to the island to trade with the natives and Italian colonists as well as setup their own small towns and ports. While eventually the pirates died off the smuggling continued on throughout most of the nation's history. Strangely one draw for people to return to the small island were the very people of it. While Christianity had come to the island from the Italian colonists in some ways it did not take fully and the culture of the people overrode it. This was most rather noteworthy on their views on sex and love, this was only exasperated by the pirates and the people who came along with them.

Over time the small island was easily forgotten and ignored by most until the 1940s. Many fled Central Europe and one which took in a comparatively large number of new citizens was the small island nation of Quanko. This brought it to the eyes of the US and USSR as a result as both wondered of the future of the island with so many potential Fascists still present there. Then David Moore of the investment banking dynasty bought his way into Presidency of the small island nation which brought it even further into the eye of the USSR which in turn made the US respond similarly. Moore has declared neutrality when pressed on the issue but it is said both nations have been keeping an eye on the nation particularly in regards to suspected former NAZI members having gained noticeable power within the government and military.

Geography: Most of the nation is surprisingly flat with only a single mountain of note and is still smaller than most mountains in the region. The rolling hills and dense jungles which dominate the nation have made for easy cultivation of crops and land clearance for cities while the many small islands and reefs make the waters somewhat treacherous though allow for easy seclusion of anything from a single hut to a small city.
