A/B)Military/Culture

Dawn, her red light broke over the horizon and cast it's glow across the sky in tendrils of light. The tribe was asleep, their stomachs full of bread and fish and their minds full of dreams of their new home. But a handful of the tribe members were not there, Voltus and twelve other men and women had ventured out into the Steppe under cover of night.

For hours now, the group had been tracking down horses, following hoof prints and snagged bits of mane but it seemed that their hunt would come to nothing. Demoralized they decided to turn around but as Voltus took the first step back to the tribe-lands, he heard it.

A whiny in the distance.

Voltus snapped his head behind him and his blue eyes went wide, horses rose out of the grass, some large and strong, some thin and spindly but elegantly shaped. He gestured for everyone to get to the ground and they did, getting onto their stomachs, they slowly started to shimmy to the horses until everyone had chosen a mount and was right beside it, they waited for their sovereign’s orders.

“Now!” He barked and like stalks of grass they rose from the ground, each one subsequently mounted horse and they started to whiny and buck around frantically to rid themselves of the unfamiliar weight but everyone held on, grabbing tufts of mane to keep themselves onto the horses. Voltus did the same, his fur kilt flapping around in the breeze; he had chosen one of the spindly elegant mounts to match his frame, and it was thrashing wildly beneath him but slowly it started to calm down, as did the other mounts. Once they were completely calm, everyone produced a fistful of hay and brought it to the muzzles of the horses and they ate rapidly, having only woken up and hungry from a night of not eating.

Voltus, kicked his legs and the horse responded by starting to walk, the others did the same as their riders kicked. Then they kicked again and the horses started to run. The riders whooped and hollered in ecstasy as they rode their newly acquired mounts around the Steppe but as Volts turned to check on his fellow riders, his happiness only grew. The rest of the herd was following behind them and straight to the village.

Summery: 33 Horses Acquired.

A) Improve Food

Broken Tooth was dead, or captured, or worse. No one cared, really. The few captains who remained bullied their orcs to their feet, brandishing the few weapons that remained to them. "Oi lads, on yer feet! We've got work te do 'ere! Who wants to eat?" On the mention of food, orcish ears pricked up, and it took less punches than usual to convince the slovenly orcs to spread out and look for meat to kill and bring back. The more forward thinking captains started to look about for a clearing or somewhere they could start building huts, it usually rained on islands after all...

We were all surprised to discover the weakness brought on by the mountain, and are puzzled by the mist. Many of us suspect that, because of the shortness of breath, and the association with the mountain peak, this mountain is sacred to Pwyll, the Frozen Lord. There have been some mutterings of ill omen, proximity to a place marked by the god of the dead is not what one would expect of a new beginning. But they were quickly silenced, for it was in Pwyll’s Frozen Tombs that our forebears sheltered from and appeased the Sky-Lord’s wrath. Besides, it is all merely supposition so far. We know nothing of the nature of the heavy breathing and the mist; they may not even be related.

And yet, I cannot shake the thought that understanding the mysteries of Y Mynydd Niwlog—The Misty Mountain. If there is any discernable pattern that can be found in the mist, it must be discovered. For the most part, observation can be done by any of us, but there is the possibility that it is magical in nature. This poses a problem, however, in that the only ones amongst us with extensive enough magical knowledge to discern anything are the Elders, whose bodies are not as strong as they once were. Their experience and knowledge, particularly of magic, is too valuable to risk.

As such, I have devised the following plan. Every week at high noon, a one of two parties will depart for the mountain and make detailed observations about the mists of Y Mynydd Niwlog. Over the following two weeks, those who observed the mist will be monitored by the Elders to determine any lasting effects Y Mynydd Niwlog ma have. The two parties shall alternate weeks. If it is not determined to be non-magical in nature, the next phase shall commence. As it is too dangerous to risk the Elders, they shall select apprentices from amongst the hale and hearty—perhaps even those who have not quite reached adulthood yet—to whom they will pass on their knowledge. The apprentices will be relieved of other duties, but will be required to devote themselves fully to the pursuit of magic. The apprenticeships will commence whatever the state of Y Mynydd Niwlog. If a magical investigation of the mountain is deemed necessary, then once the Elders believe their apprentices to be ready, the two-party system of investigation shall be resumed, and the apprentices shall accompany them to determine any possible magic within the mountain and the mist.

I pray to the Great Lords that this is not a curse or blight, else I don’t know what we could do, besides avoid the mountain.

The Genevites began to gather and organise, doing first what seemed most natural to them; Felling the trees and building simple fishing boats. Maybe they were still unsafe and the boats would provide them with a path of escape. More importantly they would provide them with a means of fishing and the felling of trees would provide them with some living and working space. The men would fish both by angling and by net. Maybe they would get some more knowledge of their whereabouts in the process, though the intention is to follow the fish rather than the coast or to explore.

A) Improve Food (Again…)

The wind whipped through the hair of the raiders but did not obscure their vision, as they had learned to tie their hair back or to cut it short. It was midday and the sun was high in the sky and beating down on the dozen riders as they rode their mounts through the Steppe, kicking up a trail of dust that was carried by the gentle breeze.

Ever since the horses were caught and trained, the people had been more optimistic about the future,as returning to their heritage was unanimously agrees to be a good omen for the tribe. Every day the horses were taken out for a ride, to the north of the Tribe-Lands until they came to the tree line and then back again, Ventians were use to the freedom of wide open spaces and found forests distasteful, as the canopies obscured the light of the sun they so cherished.

But everyday they rode north and returned, they passed by a small valley and within the small valley was a clump of trees that grew to the sky. Voltus never gave the trees any bother, they seemed to be just as plain as every other and he doubted that their wood was any good either. however this time, as they passed the clump of trees, Voltus raised his fist upwards and ordered the riders to stop; in the trees that they usually passed, there were suns. They grew in the dense foliage of the trees, bright and vibrant in their color but what color, the tribe didn’t know, as they never came across it, though it looked similar to the reds and the yellows that they were use to from the sun.

Voltus dismounted his horse and gripped it by the main, guiding it has he walked to the tree and the small, odd-colored suns. Once at the foot of the tree, He looked up into the leaves and at a sun that was just in reach. He raised his hand cautiously towards it, as the sun was hot and he didn’t want to burn his hand but the closer he got, he found that the air didn’t get warmer. Satisfied that he wouldn’t get burned, he plucked the sun from it’s stem and felt it. It was round and firm in has hands, like the breasts of his wife, he brought his nose to the sphere and inhaled. It came off with a slightly bitter-sour scent that was appealing, with subtle undermines of sweet, he guessed that it might be a fruit. but before eating it himself, he brought it to the muzzle of his mount, whom he had called Orange, after his wife. Orange sniffed it and without hesitation took a large bite out of it.

Voltus knew that animals had the inmate ability to know when something was edible or not and he was confident that it wasn’t wrong this time. He did the same and eat the fruit, peel and all; the flesh of the fruit was sweet and sour and juicy, very refreshing but the hard skin was bitter. Deciding to peel away the skin, he was surprised to find that the fruit was segmented and that the segments could be pulled apart easily, he shared the sweet slices of sun with his group and they all agreed that some should be brought to the tribe.

So they did, they packed their leather sacks with fruit and rode home to Verveaux. When the people ate it, they all wanted more and wondered wha it was called. Voltus looked to his horse Orange, without whom this discovery would not have been made.

“I call them. Oranges!”

Summery: During the process of eating the “Oranges” small stones were found inside them and it was concluded that they were seeds. The seeds were planted in uniform rows to grow into a large orchard and the people would have this wondrous fruit for generations.

Resource Added: Oranges.

Summary:

-Danr is worried about what he calls 'skraelings': strange, nonhuman people from other lands that appear in the stories of his people. He suspects that some skraelings might inhabit this new land.

-Three scout parties have left to explore the land, search for signs of the 'skraelings', and look for resources. One went south from Njor, one west, and one southwest.

-Most of the people ended up remaining in Njor. Danr's son Dag is having them build fishing boats and a small pier/dock on the shoreline.

Amongst the orcs, hierarchy was once again asserting itself. The cabin orcs, below deck workers and general dogsbodies were re-trodden down, with the bigger, stronger orcs pushing themselves to the fore. The ship captains, each big and fearsome in their own right, each tried to place themselves in overall command, but none of them were willing to shed blood yet whilst their position was so perilous.

For now, then, the Captains' Council (as they called themselves) agreed on a few things. First, they wanted to build huts. It was wet and cold in the forest, and the "island" had wolves and other beasts that were best kept outside. "And you can't have an outside wi'out an inside" captain Long Shot argued. He was rapidly becoming regarded as the most forward-thinking of the orcs. "Make one of them a smoke-house" said iron guts, a huge orc who thought with his stomach, because it was at least twice the size of his brain. There was no shortage of hatchets and axes, and soon crude huts began to appear. Larger huts for the captains, ramshackle barracks for the rest, with one big hut containing a roaring fire for smoking the meat from the abundant game around here. It wasn't the most elegant preservation technique, but orcs were famed for their strong stomachs!

The Saurians seem to be living longer, healthier lives now, thanks to the efforts of newly found herbs and fungi that improve the power of their bodies to fight sickness. So they decide to try something else out. They cry out to a higher power other than themselves. The old men, old women and young children begin having visions of a giant Tyrannosaur that speaks to them. Eventually it grows arms like they have. . . During the visions, one of the men in the village, a one hundred year old man, still healthy, without disease, sacrificed himself to the jaws of the giant Tyrannosaur, that they name Tak, so that the rest of the people be spared the wrath of Tak, being wiped out.

The next morning, the benevolent but suddenly wrathful Tak was all that they had on their mind. The man they all loved the most in the village, Uroth was gone. Vanished. His wife said that he disappeared during the night, having a dream and talking in his sleep. Uroth had begged Tak to grant the Saurians greater knowledge and power, the power of magic. Tak's magic is based on reptilians, dragons, dinosaurs and scales, tooth, claw, tail and the breath of the dragon.

Or just call them Dragon Disciples.

The Mysteries of Y Mynydd Niwlog consume the imagination of everyone, but it seems that it is not a curse—at least not entirely. Mysterious mountain or no, there is work to be done. We can only assume that winter will come to this land, and we cannot afford to be caught unawares when it does. We need to begin storing food for when it cannot be grown, and when the animals have hidden away to sleep out the colder months. As we are on an island, a potential source of food is all around us. I have ordered that nets be made and cast—the Cewri shall taste the fruit of the sea. Nets shall be woven from the plants that surround us—I have heard tell of a few willows on the far side of the island which would be ideal, but if that proves untrue than longer grasses will suffice. If fishing from the shore is not successful, as some fear, we can build small boats from some of what wood is to be found here—which we would have to do anyways, eventually.

Of course, fish are not known for their ability to stay edible, nor is any other kind of meat. It is remembered that the Cewri from before the Great Hubris would fill large basins with seawater, and leave to dry to form salt, with which they preserved and seasoned their food. We cannot operate on the same scale, but being able to store meat for the winter can only help in our survival. Holes shall be dug, and they shall be filled.

The Sea-Lord be praised, we will be ready for whatever else may come our way.
