WE'RE BACK BABY!

This will serve as the primary feedback thread. We had way too much fun in the GLORIOUS COUNTRY, and couldn't quite let that die, so there's a thread to keep all GLORIOUS shenanigans going for anyone who's interested -- but in this particular thread, we're treating it just like any other contest with totally normal entries and reviews and votes and all that. As usual, please use the @vote tag to note your pick for the big winner! And LEAVE FEEDBACK! Every word counts.

If I accidentally left some of @New Herald's 'jerk' tags on one of your entries, that's a mistake -- let me know so I can take it out ASAP. You can guess which one was written first and copy-pasted. Sorry in advance!

Well, I guess I'm going to end up being the first person to post my opinions.

@vote I nominate @RomanAria's submission, Retribution, as my favorite of these submissions.

Vilageidiotx and Dark Wind came really close, both of them producing some really nice stuff that talks about the horrors of war, but I think RomanAria's piece has the least flaws and does a good job of hitting the bonus theme of "Betrayal." It arguably could be said to hit the theme "Resistance," but that is a stretch. I explain in my critique of the submissions by Vilageidiotx and Dark Wind why they didn't win my vote despite, on some levels, having the better written story.

I'm going to start by saying that I'm giving as honest and blunt a review of each piece as I can. I'm not trying to be an ass, but I am going to point out things I thought hurt each submission and things I thought folks could do to improve their writing. This is how I'd want my piece to be critiqued, and the Golden Rule is a fair enough rule to follow, so...

I'll start by discussing the poetry submissions. I've never been good with poetry, whether judging it or writing it, so I'm not sure I can do good service to the poems that have been presented. Nevertheless, here are my critiques of His Greatness, Ode to King Han, and Quests of the Glorious Leader.

Now I'm going to talk about the non-poetry submissions in the order that I read them.

I'll go through these one by one before voting. Vote will be at the bottom.

Okay, so after deliberating, I whittled down the finalists for my vote to An Ode to King Han, Firebrand, and What's Wrong with Johnny. I would say these three all had near equal merits, so that the judgement now becomes more about personal taste. The thing that chose it for me is that I am a push-over for character development (if the story itself had held water a little better, retribution would have been in the running too). With all that in mind, I give my @vote to What's Wrong with Johnny. All three finalists showed that they know how to use writing and are very comfortable in their respective styles, but the creative use of language in injecting the personality of the main character into the writing itself is what wins it for What's Wrong with Johnny.

Leaving this post here to remind myself to leave reviews with pros and cons and all that fun. Plus, voting! (Excited to talk about the armpit licking conversation.)

Beginning the review process. Let's see here.

WILL GET TO MORE TOMORROW.

Okay, so, people who know me from previous contests. When I tell you I will get to your work tomorrow. That means it may take a LONG TIME. I need to stop giving out promises, it never friggin' works. Sigh... Alright, here's one more review.

On that note, I've finished all the reviews! And my @vote goes to Firebrand because it was the most well-structured and well-written piece of the bunch. There were other pieces that I felt delved deeper and had greater potential but it wouldn't be fair to vote for them when they're not as well-strung together. Still, damn good story. Solid writing everyone, this has been fun!

Going to get started on this as well. Not going to vote until I've read everything and I will post reviews as I read them. I'm not the best critic, and my point of view should be taken as opinion, but here goes:

Heres my outline for critique comments:

Okay, here I go. I am not a writing expert at all , I am here to learn. So any reviews I make are from the point of view of a regular, everyday reader. I won't be judging structure or anything, I will be reviewing the stories as I read them.

Will read and review more later

So once again, I forgot to list a 'due date' on the voting. The plan was, vote by the 28th and @Terminal's next labor will open up in March but there's a wrinkle -- I'm gonna be surprise-out-of-town for a week or so during that period. I'm fairly sure I can get everything done, but Vegas is involved and shit happens, so if I'm late posting the results, feel free to continue voting. And remember there's no rule that says you can't leave feedback after the voting period is over, either -- though you should really get in on TTL as soon as it pops up.

Speaking of feedback, I'm totally working on my notes for everyone. Got a little bogged down with some stuff, but I'M WORKING ON IT GEEZ PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE! Will post what I've got tomorrow and if I miss a few, I'll add more later on.

Okay, calling a break. Three more to go. May I point out – everything I’m reading has been uniquely awesome for completely different reasons and comparing each story is going to be, like, ludicrously hard. Assuming that keeps up, I have no idea how I’m gonna vote yet. You guys rock.

I just felt like i should put a word in here about my piece.

My primary inspiration was the Kim jong Un skits by college humor. I tried to make something similar, and i guess it was funny enough to get a few chuckles here and there which was my hope all along. :D

For anyone noting a lack of writing diversity, or simply feeling it got a bit stale towards the end. Spot on.
This was written in a single sitting, i just wrote down what popped up at the top of my head and sent it going. I think i perhaps read through it once when i was done before sending it in.

If i ever wanted to produce real quality writing, i'd need a proofreader. But this was just me goofing around with the theme and hoping for a few laughs.
So there it is, thanks for the feedback :D

I want to thank everyone for their feedback so far. It made me happy to read people felt the poem belonged in a tavern and could picture a bard singing it. It was intended as a song my OC Mikhal, the travelling bard, could sing :)

for everyone's better awareness -- I owe a few reviews, but here's what's going on. On Sunday, when I wrote that initial batch up, I called a break and went home and relaxed for a minute. I haven't had a free minute since then on account of a surprise trip to Vegas to compete in like sports and crap -- it's cool and it's fun and it's a real opportunity that's demanding a whole lot of my attention, but as a result, I'm not sure whether or not I'll be available to handle all the RPGC admin stuff when the voting period closes. I *might* finish reviews in time -- but it's a really busy schedule and I'm just plain not around.

SO.

With that in mind, we're gonna have to do some teamwork to count up all the votes, in order to finish up RPGC in time for @Terminal to open up the next labor in time for TTL. Voting deadline, again, is the last instant of February -- 'objective midnight' is the phrase. Have your votes in and that *will* close out the contest here. If you log in on Monday Tuesday the 1st, and you feel like doing us all a big favor, go ahead and tally up the votes. You can declare the winner! The bonus categories will be awarded later (or earlier, if I have time tomorrow -- or on time, if one of the other staffers is available [but they're not, I don't think, we're all sort of away right now]). If you went after a bonus -- don't worry, I won't forget about you, the prizes will be awarded eventually. Just, you know, desperate times and all that.

In the meantime, anticipate TTL to begin and run as usual -- no need to slow any of that on my account. I should be coordinating with @Terminal on that but like I said, there is practically zero downtime at the moment, and when there IS downtime, I mean.... it's Vegas, honestly now.

edit: leap year stupid

Just dropping in to remind everyone that it is a leap year.

Unsure how that affects the voting deadline vis-a-vi @mdk's 'end of February' statement contrast with the sidebar deadline, but the Twelve Labours will be starting on the First of March.

That is all.

I did say I'd be mighty delayed, now, didn't I? As is the norm, following shall be compiled my reviews/critiques of all the entries.

Letter grades are provided to give a sense of relative scaling, but are not objectively measured. A poor grade can just as well be caused by poor writing as it can be by a poorly constructed plot. Try not to let me discourage you—I consider myself a harsh critic, but ultimately I do want all of you to succeed.

Despite the clear indication of my ratings, it was ultimately a challenge for me to choose between two powerful entries: Firebrand, and Retribution. And ultimately, Retribution takes my @vote. I apologize, @Shorticus, I do consider your entry the best; but @RomanAria's was my favourite. I would be quite happy to see either of you win.

I've read through them all and I will post official reviews on the rest later, but I @vote Firebrand because it fits the themes and I love the story and as a reader that's what's most important to me.

@mdk So, um. Not sure why, but you said it was a big favor to tally the votes, so, I guess I could take on that extremely strenuous task of counting the six votes. Hah.

Firebrand by @Shorticus – 3 votes.
Retribution by @RomanAria – 2 votes.
What’s Wrong with Johnny by @Dark Wind – 1 vote.
The rest – 0 votes but quite a few reviews.

So, um. Guess I'll do this, then? Sounds like I should do this. If I CAN'T do it, then ignore this hider. Haha.
