I finally understand why people don't like the nation section (I think). It's fill with dead roleplays and people who don't really care about it at all. If there are active people, they either do something and/or add something that's overpowering and defend it. They say that they "care about the story more than winning." If you cared about the story, why do you have eight overpowering ships. I am done with the nation section.

I was on the edge of leaving behind the section to rot, but I made up my mind. If there are more people out there that think it's fine to have overpowering shit, then I won't be able to stand it anymore. I can't take it anymore. The staff should delete this section and move the active roleplays to the Free, Casual, and Advanced section. The site would be so much better without it.

There are only a hand full of roleplays within that section that I have fun with. And I loved the players over there. I am not leaving behind the three other nation roleplays that I am currently in until it dies or the story is finished. I hope that the active users over the section do something before more people leave the section. Sorry for the long rant, but I needed to let it out of my systems before I do something stupid.

I think with NRPs it is at the point you have to pick the people you want to invite rather than hope for the best, sadly.

@Gowi, I always wanted to start a nation roleplay that's based on Mass Effect 3 and the Reapers for the same game. I want the powerful nations to become weak as the Reapers tear apart the entire universe, killing everyone and destroying thousands of years of civilizations. I want to have similar story-telling that Mass Effect 3 had (Turian vs Krogan, Geth vs Quarian, etc.) But, I don't trust the majority of users at the section to put love and time into making the plot and setting for them to disappear once the IC is up.

I might do it once I made enough friends that are interested in doing that and just make it invite only.

A lot of GMing/RPing is just building a social network if you think about it. Failure bring possibility of new successes.

Don't hate on NRP, I think it deserves to be here. It comes and goes... It's going right now but I remember more activity.

And besides, it's the perfect spot for perfectly niche stuff like PoW. I don't think it quite fits under te Advanced section if posts are routinely thousands of words long.

because @screenacne was so kind as to link me here

I've seen so much crap in the status bar in the past minute and I just need to type this out. So apparently there's no realism in rp anymore because a lot of characters are gay/bisexual and that used to not be the case. Perhaps that is because times are changing and having a non-hetero sexuality is more accepted. You can also explore your sexuality in a nonphysical way through rp which may help people. We're all different and just because all of your friends are straight doesn't mean everyones friends were straight. All of my friends in hs were in the LGBTQ community or exploring it so your argument on this is now invalid. Idk whatever.

Another thing.

Dark/gritty rp's aren't 'realism' because why? It's not your reality? Have you ever sat back and realized that your reality is not my reality. My reality does not pertain to another persons reality. Maybe they have a dark life, and to cope they make dark rp's where their character is saved or is doing the saving because they want or need someone to save them. It may not be your reality but its someone's reality so realism SUPER subjective here.

If you take offense to this, great. If not, great. I really give 0 fucks. I just needed to vent in a public way.

@SilentWriter83 I personally wouldn't take it so personally since the guy who made that message has his head so far up his own ass that he could give himself a colonoscopy.

I agree with most of this. I already spoke my piece in the status bar, but plenty of my own characters are bisexual (I should make less bi characters, and more straight up gay characters lol). I just hate it when it stops seeming like you're exploring their sexuality, and just start fetishizing.

Well, I do agree that particular status message could have been worded better, because edgy =/= realism.

I do like a dark RP long as it isn't obnoxious... the two don't really go hand-in-hand.

@Mr Allen J I agree that there is a difference between fetishizing and exploring. personally I don't like doing het rp's simply because it makes me uncomfortable, which may seem odd since I'm in a het relationship rn and a girl, but rp'ing as a girl or with a girl just makes me uncomfortable. I actually prefer rp'ing as a male. Idk why. perhaps it's because it's easier to detach myself from the rp in that way. Who knows I don't really think too hard on the psychology behind my rp'ing as a male and why that males me more comfortable than rp'ing as my correct gender but fuck it. I do. But my point is, there is a line that gets crossed between fetishizing gay characters and wanting to explore who you are, not that rp is strictly for exploring sexuality. It's fiction: an escape from your everyday life so honestly, if you're not perpetuating harmful stereotypes (which I really try not to do) then by all means do whatever makes you happy. It just annoyed me that they decided that non-het rp's, and the abundance of them, are non-realistic. Tbh I wouldn't be surprised if the vast majority of people aren't straight, whether they want to admit that or not it wouldn't be surprising if that was a fact.

As for the second part, I do stand by my opinion but I do understand and respect yours. I like to have my handful of dark rp's. I have a partner search up now with two darker themed rp's. Everyone has different things they like. Some people like horribly dark obnoxious themes that may seem outrageous but again, to each their own. I do get where you're coming from though. Edgy themes doesn't necessarily make it more realistic and there should be that understanding when it comes to plotting.

@SilentWriter83 Just my two-cents...

1) LGBT vs realism in roleplaying:

Rather than forcing the characters to be categorized under specific sexuality for the sake of either appeal or whatever selfish reasons, I think that people should take a step back and try to understand what being someone who's LGBT really is and feels, instead of just going: "My character is <insert sexuality type here>, and they'll fuck with only those in line with the sexual preference I stated. Kthxbai." You are not going to play a convincing character with the sexuality type you stated when you don't even understand what being that sexuality type truly means. It's just like the Emperor's Clothes story: you think you're wearing some fantastic clothes, playing a glamorous LGBT character that everybody wants to hang out with, when in reality you wear nothing, because you understand nothing about what it's like to be in their shoes.

Like you have said, not many people would admit their real sexual preference - not all of them are straight or even have any interest in sexual stuff at all openly - because it is a sensitive topic to most people. Things about LGBT should be treated sensibly and with empathy and respect, not just to feed your sick fetish fantasies.

Exploring what it means to play a LGBT character is fine if it can help you to better understand how their feelings towards being labeled and stereotyped as such by the majority and mass media, but know where to draw the line between exploration and doing it for the sake for going smutty.

2) Dark and edgy vs realism in roleplaying:

I do like gritty stories, but there should always be hope somewhere no matter how grim the plot is building up, because that hope is the greatest device in developing the story to its highest point, and can help to leave an impact to the players (or even lurkers reading the RP). Realistically, it's true that things don't always go our way in life, but life has ups and downs. In any stories, there are always lots of ups and downs - whether to the character, the plot, the setting... it's everywhere. Not many people are willing to invest their time to read or play something that is down and depressing all the way and everyone dies in the end with no hopeful ups - like, what's the point of wasting hours or days or even months on it when everyone's going to die anyway with zero redemption, zero development? Why can't they just die right from the start when there's just zero hope to live? /shrugs

@The SpectreNRP can be a painful experience like that. All the cyclic deadness and build up to nowhere is one of the reasons I sometimes just don't RP for months. And with open NRPs there is always that extreme risk of that one faction you just HATE the existence of. Like as in you don't know how the GM is even tolerating thing that simply detracts from the whole setting with that cancerous thing that ruins it all that you'll have to deal with. This happens to me sometimes with certain alien species archetypes and not just OP-ness, so it's even worse for me to some level.

*Slowly breathes in*

.........

When someone in a roleplay instantly ships characters together, sometimes your character with theirs.

Like, bro, I don't want to interact with your character in that way. I've already started character development with another character that's been getting to a romantic level, and then you come in, all of a sudden your character starts getting lovey dovey with mine.

Not to mention, didn't last week your character had your eyes on someone else?

Another rant:

People who don't take time into their CSs.

Like seriously, you didn't even color the dialogue correctly. You forgot to finish the bio, and your character doesn't act anything like the CS implied it did.

Then people who want bullcrap excuses for personalities so they can get away with anything.

Someone in a roleplay I was in, literally said something similiar to this:

"She is trusting to everyone she meets, but she will not believe anyone."

....

Boi.

Now I'm done.

I once met someone who asked to write the personality out in single word adjectives i.e. "Happy, angry, sad" because he openly admitted he would likely deviate from the personality in the RP and so didn't want to write out a solid paragraph.

I mean, if you're deviating from your character's personality outside of authentic character development, then you're doing it wrong.

The entire Submissive/Dominant personality dichotomy in relationships for roleplays. It's shallow, predictable, and lazy.
