Silas rolled his eyes as his advice about limiting illumination was quickly and decisively ignored by Kushiel. Which, predictably, resulted in them being seen by someone or something. And then subsequently attacked. By skeletons, no less.

This was going to be a long mission, it seemed.

Akoni reacted rather decisively, summoning up four walls of portals and wading unconcerned through the throng of skeletons, calling out that he was going to deal with the necromancers behind the skeletal mob. Silas moved to help him intercept- going after the skeletons would be an exercise in futility, considering the necromancers would just be able to keep raising them- but found his path blocked by more of the aforementioned skeletons, without an easy way to get around them like Akoni. He rolled his eyes, cleaving through a throng of skeletons with Pleiades, trying to break the bones into as many pieces as he could. They'd be harder to raise that way. He continued along this path, trying to carve a path through the horde, Pleiades' facets whirling around him in a controlled, deadly ballet. But for every skeleton he cut down, it seemed like two more took that one's place. Maddening, to say the least.

How irksome. Perhaps it's time to escalate the situation?

He leapt back from the horde, opening up some distance between him and their clawing bony fingers, then concentrated briefly. Two golden runes traced themselves in the air in front of him, pointed at the mob. With a grim smile, Silas let out a piercing whistle, and in the next moment, his hounds burst forth out of their portals, manifesting in the mortal world. They surged forth, wreathed in fire and lightning, tearing a cross shape through the oncoming skeletons, rending some of the bones to dust from the force of their charge.

"Kazfiel! Sraosha! Attend! Defensive formation!" The Angelic hounds dashed back to their master, taking up sides on either flank, jaws open wide and snarling as Silas dashed forward into the opening torn by his hounds' initial maneuver. The dogs assaulted any unfortunate skeleton that strayed too near, torn apart by the massive jaws of the hounds or dispatched with blasts of fire or crashing bolts of lightning. Silas grinned a feral smile.

Well, now. This is more like it. He moved forward, still not as fast as he'd like, but between Pleiades and his hounds, the horde didn't slow him down nearly so much as before. Finally, he broke out into a more open space, next to Akoni, just in time to see the corpses with bells summoning... whatever the hell that thing was. It was slow and lumbering, to be sure, but its mass seemed to spawn more skeletons wherever its tainted flesh touch. That was likely going to be problematic.

He dismissed Pleiades for now, drawing Polaris from its holster. While the thing wasn't unduly large, it still had enough weight to throw around that attacking up close was ill-advised, and Polaris had longer range. He turned to the mage next to him, taking aim at the too-perfect face of the abomination at the same time.

"So, do we have a plan, besides, 'shoot it until it stops moving?'" He looked around, glancing at the bell-ringing corpses. "Are those things the summoners, do you think? Will taking them out dismiss the bigger one?"

Hopping from head to head, occasionally clashing blade to wing with a fallen, Mary finally made her way to the end of the hall, now opposite some straggler demons and the three fallen. All she had to do now was take care of the Fallen and lock the door behind her. Seemed simple enough. Mary pulled out her blade, it's larger surface area and higher density would allow her to shatter the fallen's wings more easily. Of course, the things were quick on their feet, or wings as it may be, so she didn't bother pulling out a secondary weapon. Needed all the mobility she could get.

One of the demons lunged at Mary with zeal, to which Mary responded with an artful dodge, followed by a straight vertical chop to the left wing, now fairly close to her. A loud clang resonated through the room as the light but strong material was cracked, followed by two instances of the wind being swept up. Operating purely on instinct, Mary dashed backwards, being just narrowly clipped by one of the demons lances. A small trickle of milky white blood began to run from an open slit in her dress. Sneering at the monsters in front of her, Mary went on the offensive.

Pulling out both her weapons, Mary absolutely tore into the nearest Fallen's wing, shattering it just as the one that had first attacked her was about to strike again. Multitasking, Mary both slashed at the third fallen one final time, ending it, while thrusting her jitte forward to catch the assailant's spear. While she could not break it, since it was made of light, this would be the perfect opportunity to strike. Mary slashed the now exposed core, killing another in a short time. All that was left was the final demon.

It floated out of Mary's reach for a moment, assessing the situation. Both of it's allies had been dispatched rather hastily. It seemed to want to resort to ranged combat, hurling it's spears. Mary knew of their explosive properties, and quickly holstered one of her weapons to get away. She quickly closed the distance between the two, careful not to throw any weapons at the thing. Once close enough, the demon agreed to fight head on again, circling round before lunging for Mary's side. Again, she dodged and laid down the fire power before shattering it's core. With that done, Mary locked up, taking care of a few lesser demons on the way, and rushed over to the last gate. Kosara had surely taken care of the other gate by now.

Now that was interesting. Quite a sight to behold. Akoni mentally chided himself for his internal pun, careful not to drop his guard as the mutated flesh beast approached slowly, summoning more of its skeletal defenders in the process. He had no real way of describing this creature other than as an abomination. Some sort of mangled hand-like thing with eyes all over its body (what was it with demons and angels and the eye thing, anyway?) that attempted to appear as a small group of humans in a disguise that never could have possibly worked on anybody with half a brain. Ah, but of course, this was earth. There were plenty of those to go around, weren't there?

Just as a skeleton attacked Akoni, and found itself suddenly falling from the ceiling for its troubles, Silas caught up and offered his own brand of sagely insight. He had summoned his two angelic hounds and now used a different weapon than Akoni had known from the Sage. There was no way that the army of skeletons had proven to be too difficult to handle with his normal gear, so Akoni figured that these were simply more appropriate for mowing down large numbers.

"I do have a plan," the old wizard gruffly responded. As he spoke, he shattered a skeleton apart with his Lammasu gauntlet, then ripped a shard of rib bone free. "These eyes only unnerve the inexperienced. To the trained, they make a-" Hurling his clenched fist downward, Akoni opened a gate to pass through, and aimed to not just stab into one of the many eyes littering the creature's body, but to nail straight through into the floor itself. "Perfect bullseye!"

Blair

Looking around the kitchen, she could see severed, bloody bits, dried up guts strewn across the walls and tables and lets not forget the blood and rotted vegetables on the tables. What a foul smell, seems like housekeeping is a non-existent topic in this place. Though she heard the sounds of chopping, there was nothing to see in the small church kitchen. With the door in the kitchen barred by a fleshy wall, Blair had to take a detour through the courtyard and it was there she found the source of the chopping.

In plain view was a rather large figure holding a massive butcher's knife, though chipped and slightly rusted, no doubt from extended use and all the blood. Even for a demon of Blair's standing, the figure commanded a lot of raw strength on look and atmosphere alone. Suffice to say, he was nothing compared to the creatures from before. She briefly wondered if she happened upon her target, but the maddened look in his eyes made her sigh. No matter how much she wishes it, it looks like she wouldn't be quickly wrapping up this mission that easily.

While she would prefer not to waste time on another distraction from her target, the look in the figure's eyes made it clear that any attempts at conversation would likely fail. With a sigh, she drew her twin short swords, Sodom & Gomorrah, opting for weapons with a better chance of a counter-attack and when put on the defensive. With an opponent like this, she needed to get in and get out as quick as possible. She was also hoping to maximize the output of her Blood Blast technique. Since the monster decided to take things slowly, she had plenty of time to prepare.

Since she already has one golem up and about (the one she had placed by the cellar entrance) that left her with the ability to only make 2 more (Able to create and control 4 at a time but the tank golem she made, she put twice as much work into it so 3 was her limit). Sensing a tough fight, Blair sent a silent command to her tank golem by the cellar to meet back up with her and join the battle. However, it'll take some time for it to get here, she may or may not have a use for it but it doesn't hurt to be cautious of a strong foe.

Her game plan for this battle would be to first create 2 smaller golems to serve as a distraction and interfere with potential strikes that may harm her, thus re-directing the strikes. Secondly, she would slow the target down with 'Blood Spike Projection', in hopes of pinning the target in one place long enough for her to get in, strike and get out. And Lastly, if successful in pinning him down, she would then cast 'Blood Blast' on each Sodom & Gomorrah. If the 2 golems happen to get destroyed beforehand, the more blood she has to work with in regards to blasting.

Summoning her golems, she starts her game plan by casting her 'Blood Spike Projection' Spell.

After dispatching the gate and the Fallen that had appeared to guard it, she headed back to the city proper. There were definitely less demons running around now, and she could see some Order of the Sword members running in the distance, although towards a particular direction. She stopped one of them, and they gave her their report,

"Considering the reduction in demon threat, Nero has mobilized some of us to secure the last gate... As for your friend uhhh, we saw her chasing someone not too long ago, and there seem to be angels in the area too", with that he was dismissed. It looks like heading to the final gate and then securing the city and assessing the damage was next on the list.

@BCtheentity@rivaan

As the three were moving towards the wreckage, they found that by the time they got there, whoever was there had clearly run off already, in the distance they could see some coat tails disappearing into the rubble. Kosara would recognize them as belonging to that other half-demon Gideon. Considering this freshly crashed vehicle, it likely belonged to her target. Meanwhile, the two angels of the Heirarchy would spot from their position in the distance a horde of demons, originating from a gate. They can spot some white-clothed humans moving into that area, likely with the intent on stopping that demon horde.

It seems this is where they must part ways as their primary objectives have presented themselves.

This mass of flesh and bone dripping with viscous blood, took a strike to one of the eyes. The bubble burst into a spray of blood, but the strike had seemed to do something to it as it seemed to halt and flinch slightly. The eye that was strike was not especially large... Or rather, none of them were large, but visible to the trained eye was that that whatever blow Akoni had struck, the flesh in the area decayed and plopped off the main body. Meanwhile, it was still summoning minions, the numbers were beginning to mount. This might not be a difficult fight, but it can be a tiresome one if they let the minions outnumber them.

@I-Am-X

The butcher upon seeing the two blood clones took a powerful step forward, holding the knife with two hands as it swung, cleaving the two weak golems easily. It was such a wide attack that avoiding it would've been easy for someone of Blair's stature and skill, but for those golems they were easily cut down. This gave Blair a moment to examine it's fighting style though, the attack would not have been stopped by staggering it, and the power was undeniable, but the swing was so wide it can be easily struck many times before it was ready to attack again.

After it cleaved the clones it continued it's slow menacing walk towards Blair. Meanwhile, her tank blood golem was on it's way, it should be here in not long, but it looks like unless Blair decided to summon even more golems, she was alone. The opponent may be powerful, and tanky, but it wasn't impossible to take it down without help. It's attacks seemed predictable, but taking any hit may be a fatal mistake.

Upon seeing with his own eyes the results of his strategy, Akoni could not help but grin ever so slightly. A portion of the creature's flesh rotted away, as though age had caught up to it, all thanks to a single eye puncture. The path forward was a clear one, and it seemed that this thing had no real defense beyond summoning its minions, making it an easy kill. Speaking of the minions, Akoni dodged out of the way of a clumsy skeleton, backhanding its jaw and sweeping its legs so the frail body collapsed onto the ground. Another came from the side, but found itself suddenly falling from the ceiling as it charged through a freshly opened gateway. These infernal things threatened to overrun them if they paid so little attention, and that blasted angel was still far behind dealing with the larger army. Akoni could only count on one ally for this fight. Luckily, one would be more than sufficient. Overkill, really.

"Thin out the herd," he ordered to Silas in a tone that sounded very much like a firm suggestion. "I will silence the bells."

Just like that two gates appeared before Akoni, the exits appearing above the creature. His devil arm, the Lammasu gauntlets, shapeshifted to include a single long blade designed purely for puncturing. Grounding himself in his position, Akoni began to unleash a small, short flurry of blows through the gates, punching his fist in each one, aiming to stab the Lammasu into the monster's eyes one by one. With every blow, the exit gates would vanish then reappear in a slightly different location. Punch punch, stab stab the old wizard attacked relentlessly! Such a tactic should prove marvelous against the creature, but left him open to attack from the myriad of skeletal beings. For this assault he placed his trust in Silas, in the Lumen Sage, and hoped that the Sage would not let him down. As frail and weak as skeletons were, Akoni was still an old man with no magic designed to enhance his physical body. All it would take from those things was one solid hit, and he gave them a perfect opening to do so.

Silas, do not let me down.

While the blood golems were taking down faster then anticipated, it was still expected given how weak they were. Plus, she was able to see it's fighting style, so in a way it was a success. Now then... Proceeding with the next step in her plan, she then began casting 'Blood Spike Projection'. Taking aim at the monster forearms, she fired off 2 large bloody spikes to each side. She was hoping she'd hit its forearms at a diagonal angle, hoping to pierce through the forearms, right through the hips and making their final stop through the opposite legs, essentially forming an X with the spikes allowing her to move in and strike.

Seeing that things ridiculous strength, it surely wouldn't last long so she needed to be real fast. As the spikes descended more and neared contact, she quickly moved towards the next step in her plan and casted 'Blood Blast' on her twin short-swords Sodom & Gomorrah and charged in. If done fast enough, she might have time to quickly summon a single makeshift golem to take the hit, in effort to splatter blood in its eye. Let's see what fate decrees.

After reporting to a passing Sword member that she had disposed of the mini-gate, the Sword member reported to her that Nero was launching his attack on the last gate. With this info, Mary rushed to the last gate, located back near where she had entered. After dismissing the Order member, of course. On her way there Mary wondered about where Korasa was, if she was okay after attempting to take down that gang leader. Her mind also wandered to the little girl, Midori. It looked like she had recovered but she had also been sent out on a mission after just getting back. Putting such strain on the girl surely wasn't good.

After much deliberation, Mary reached the main gate where Nero and his forces had gathered.

"Aaaaaugh!", a bunch of Order members were sent flying as soon as Mary had arrived. She watched a lightning strike throw them back as she saw something familiar... A rare demon, a very rare one. A Blitz. The draconic lightning demon was truly a brilliant sight, though if she remembered... The thing was blind. It fought by relying on sound. As soon as she stepped into the field, a horde of summoned blades spun and stuck into the Blitz, causing it to stagger, but it's lightning veil was yet to be dispelled.

"I haven't seen one of these things for a long time. Mary, let's make this quick. If you can dispel it's barrier, I can finish it off", he suggested. The Blitz's lightning veil was troublesome, and made it very difficult to strike directly, as it's electricity would feedback on contact. Alternatively, Nero can dispel the barrier, while Mary went in.

As the battle dragged on it became clear this was going to take some time. Though the corner of their eye in the darkness, they saw a familiar white flame envelope the halls they stood in. The flames burned away the eyes of the beast before them, giving Akoni a chance to strike what appeared to be a core as it fell backwards.

As soon as that business was quickly wrapped up, the angel Kushiel had returned with Fiametta. It appears he felt it necessary to bring her along as help, and it certainly sped things up. Her holy flames were best suited for this entire ordeal it seems.

"Well, that was certainly something. Here I'll light this place up", she said, she clicked her fingers, sending a wisp of fire at each of the lanterns, lighting this crypt up.

"We should continue moving along. The demon responsible should be a fair bit up ahead... We'll need to go through the study first", with that agreed, they moved along.

@I-Am-X

The beastly butcher before her was less a demon, and more a zombie. It's body while soft, did not follow the normal rules of vitals. So it might be best to restrain it to save some time. Regardless, it's strength meant it would eventually let itself free if that was her option. Killing it seemed to be something that would take a fair bit of time without the proper powers.

She had to weigh her options... Should she spend more time here? Or move along? The main hall and then the church area didn't seem to be very far away.

Seeing the monster trying to break it's restraints made her think it was more of a zombie than anything. Does it feel no pain whatsoever? If that was the case, then what she was doing was probably pointless and was wasting her time. It was mindless but had incredible strength, killing it would consume too much time and she wasn't sure how long until it breaks free. Should it break before she was able to move on, she'd have to waste even more time with the monster.

The main hall and church area seemed close enough, all she needs to do is wait for her back-up option so she can get back to her mission. If she was sent after the demon responsible for the distortion, there's no telling if she wasn't alone in finding it. Just like in Vigrid with those two demons, both of whom were after the same target she was sent after. She couldn't be lax and needs to hurry. Thankfully, her tank golem showed up just in time. Deciding to move along, she commanded the golem to restrain the monster

With the monster properly restrained, she continued on her and resumed her search for the demon.

Mary weighed her options for a second, staring at the demon and it's lightning veil. She didn't have many options to dispel it's shield, considering her weapons were all made of conductive metals. The only thing that would work would be her pistol, which paled in comparison to Nero's summoned swords and Blue Rose. "Could you break it's veil, Field Commander Nero? You have much more ranged ordnance. I'll get in close and wait for an opportunity." She explained, before rushing off towards the monster. Once sufficiently close, Mary would distract it by repeatedly weaving in and out of it's range, and dodging.

"No problem", he responded, his voice mid-sentence echoed as it appears he was accessing his demonic power. A wraith would appear behind him as he charged in. A rain of spinning blades would barrage the Blitz as he went in to strike it with his Devil Bringer, however it was not his arm that would connect, but the wraith's, allowing him to avoid direct contact. Immediately this was followed with a point-blank shot from his Blue Rose, staggering the Blitz, before shortly combusting from the explosive round mixed in with the charged shot, sending the Blitz into the air.

He gave a hand signal to Mary to begin her assault as he turned around, the explosion at his back, before he would grasp his hand around Red Queen for a follow-up, should he need to. He was confident it would not be necessary.

The small party made up of those aligned with heaven, made their way through the crypt, and emerged in the study of the one who presides over this place. There was nothing of note here, except for a book... Akoni would immediately recognize this as a book of demons, specifically it was one of many tomes that were designed to communicate and even summon a demon... It increased the likelihood that a demon was at the heart of this affair greatly, though that much was certain already.

"Hmmm, the study... We're not far from the main prayer hall. That should be where the source of all this lies", she noted.

"Oh that book... I remember that one. Not too long ago a strange man brought it here, though I have little doubt it is related to these events. The strange symptoms we saw have been happening for weeks already", she informed them. So this book was not related...? Or maybe it was...? It was up to Akoni whether or not they would take it, as Silas and Kushiel had little interest in a book of demons.

Regardless, they were on their way through the ward, and began to swing open the door into the chapel. As they did, an overwhelming fear overtook them. Lesser men would flee immediately to this feeling, and that feeling would sustain, but an agent of heaven, an angel themselves, a man who had seen the darkest of man and demon, as well as a woman cloaked in holy magic, would resist it, and press on.

Here lay their target.

@I-Am-X

Blair moved through the kitchen, leaving behind the brutish butcher. As she sifted through the courtyard for a way back into the main building, she felt a surge of power... She recognized what kind of power this was, fear. The primary weapon of a demon of illusions and deception. She can pinpoint where it was coming from, that must be where her target was.

With little delay, she moved along.

As the group watched the mad creature repel the swarms of insects, Fenn’s lips slid over his fangs, baring a pleased snarl.

“Is this god small enough for your liking, Imp?” the hound rumbled with a hint of amusement.

The demoness glowered at the hellhound she still rode, rising to her feet even as her body changed into that of a half tiger; complete with black stripes across the orange fur covering her from the waist-down. She bared her fangs in a vicious snarl, her voice coming out heavy, cutting through the din of the insects buzzing wings.

“Swords raised high
En’mies around
Hear our cry
Now go, my Hound!”

She dug her claws into the back of Fenn, grabbing hold of a tuft of his fur as he took off. As if provoked by the intonation, creature’s attention fell on the group with an ear piercing screech.

Behind them, Wrath watched them leap forward as he drew his own weapon, Rage Bringer, waiting a short while before moving in behind them, his weapon at the ready and a defiant glare in his eyes.

The noise of rushing water, brief and almost lost in the eerie ambience of this sacred place, signified that Souta had armed himself in preparation for battle. Golden light from the seal reflected from his trusty Trawlers, the surface of the nasty hooks gleaming with liquid. So, too, did the wave patterns on his hoodie glow, ready to unleash their torrent.

Beckoned by the call of their mistress, a pair of flesh and metal abominations appeared from besides it, launching themselves at the intruders.

Fenn met the charge with his own, crashing against one of the beasts with a din of chiming chains and clanking metal. His charge took advantage of the sudden halt, leaping from her mount’s back as Fenn confronted the abomination. She sailed through the air as she let the momentum carry her forward. The shapeshifter landed on all fours with feline grace before pushing herself up onto her legs and darting forward, a sword and a shield forming in her hands as she left the skirmish to focus on the source of their troubles.

Wrath met with the second creature, ducking under a nasty swipe from it’s left arm and countering with a horizontal slash before dancing back to use his great sword’s reach to his advantage. Unfortunately, the Nephilim was quick to learn that the three huge blades integrated into the monster’s body held a distinct advantage over the greatsword of even a skilled warrior on his own, and whether it knew this or not, the misshapen thing attacked relentlessly. Keeping at least one of its front legs planted at all times to avoid falling, it stabbed at the Nephilim again and again. At that time, part of its metal shell attached at its rear end slid up, telescoping and curving as it did until most of the freak’s flesh was protected. A harsh light began to smolder from its dripping, slimy maw.

The first had found itself a less advantageous foe. Immediately the hideous toy began to slide backward, pointed legs carving grooves in the ground under the hellhound’s far greater weight. With the two creatures’ heads even, though, another avenue was open. From its grotesque vertical mouth-slit, a cascade of amber light poured forth. Fenn hissed as the ray coalesced into a beam of energy, not so much heat as plasma, reminiscent of lightning’s fury in the way it seized the muscles it fell on with a singing pain.

Souta too charged forward. He moved without the speed of his demonic precursor, and he felt the heat surrounding the demented creature even from further away. Writ on his features could be seen an unnatural hatred for the disgusting, abominable thing that stood before him. Perhaps its very presence drove him to crazed anger, but his every action gave off the conviction that he would put everything he had into wiping it from existence as soon as possible. Fire welled up around him, too, and where it met with his veil of rushing water, there came a blast of steam. From inside the steaming cloud there emerged a man changed – Souta, surrounded in bulky, ridged armor of stone, aflow with lava and water, and drenched in steam. Even a human, it seemed, could embrace the Charred Council’s Firebrand Trigger. He approached the mangled beast currently grappling Fenn and swung a Trawler at its legs. More like a giant grappling hook than a fishhook, the heavier weapon swept its back leg, throwing it off balance and angling the beam of light off target.

Retribution came swiftly. The hound’s large claws plunged into the creature’s fleshy throat with only the barest resistance eliciting a strangled cry from the abomination. The demon continued to push inwards and upwards, meat quickly tearing until the thing’s head had been completely ripped away from its resting place.

Still occupied with his own opponent, Wrath sidestepped, ducked and weaved, unable to find an opening to take advantage of the monster’s attacks. The plated armor not protecting its back proved a slight issue in its own, but a protected back was far from indicative of anything else being protected. Jumping back from another thrust, the Nephilim sheathed his greatsword and flicked his gauntlets. Blades extended from them once more and he assumed a stance more fit to them. When the abomination thrust forwards a bladed limb, Wrath snapped out his left gauntlet to redirect it, using the motion to close the distance with the creature. Before the beast could react, the warrior unleashed a series of quick slashes on its chest and head before delivering a serrated uppercut into its chin.

Unburdened by intelligence, the loathsome plaything could not defend itself, and when the blow struck home it staggered back. Another burst of plasma escaped its slitted mouth to fly skyward, aimed at nothing. The next moment it was on its back, flailing its bladed legs but no longer any sort of threat.

His own opponent dispatched through the use of its own weight and poor balance, Wrath retracted the claws with another flick of his wrist and drew Rage Bringer once more. Approaching the flailing legs, he chopped them off at the “shoulders”, ensuring no attacks of that sort could be made before spinning the great sword and ramming its point into the monster’s chest and slicing up into its head.

While the rest of the Council’s agents dealt with the monsters brought to stall them, the female monstrosity loomed before Lily, taller than any human despite its appearance, yet still smaller than the demon she had ridden into battle. The sheer heat radiating from it, however, was far less restrained. Still, that was not enough to dissuade the demoness.

The mad one’s mouth hung open as if in shock that the same burning aura that dispelled Ourakekem’s swarms had no effect on this new interloper. The delay merely allowed Lily to dive into striking distance uncontested, where she lashed out with her sword in a rapid, flowing motion. Aware of the sudden danger, the monster began to move. The writhing tentacles that held her up unwound to splash into the ankle-deep pool (or what of it had yet to evaporate due to the Creatrix’ sunlike corona) to grab the rock and pull her to safety, but they were not fast enough. A nightmarish howl echoed across the flat landscape as one of the aberration’s branches was snapped off to dangle by a few scraps of flesh. Its candlelight died, and from the wound a viscous, fire-red ichor seeped. The blow carried Lily past the creature, where she whirled around to face it before retaliation came.

Suffused by insane hatred, the Creatrix turned, and as she did a now-familiar beam emerged from the aperture on her crown, though this one even more blindingly bright than the Seal itself. This beam of plasma flew toward Lily as fast as its projector’s head could turn – which was fast indeed, for one galvanized into action by pain and madness.

Lily's eyes widened in the split second before she was in the beam’s trajectory. She raised her Shield angling it off to the side as she dashed away, retreating from the beam as quickly as she could. Even through the shield, however, the sting of an electric current coursed through her. She was sent to careening off to the side, tumbling end-over-end for several meters before she finally managed to roll to her feet. Her face was a mask of surprise mixed with indignation; jaw clenched and brows furrowed. If it hadn't been obvious before, it certainly was now. Their opponent – the Creatrix – was a powerful one, more powerful than they had ever faced. The beam of plasma had raked across the stony ground, scoring black gashes into its surface but not its intended target. As the torrent of power died, the demoness’s enemy howled in frustration.

Lily stood up, reforming the sword she had held previously and discarding her shield. Her entire body tensed, as if every single muscle in her body coiled together like a spring. Her eyes narrowed and she lowered herself to the ground, one hand steadying her, the other holding her weapon the ready. Something, behind and off to the side of her foe drew her attention, and a smirk found its way to her features. Then, as she had done before, she let this spring uncoil and propelled herself forward with a mighty, cacophonous boom following in her wake. The beam that had struck her had originated from the crown, and so that was the aim of Lily this time.

From behind, a large hunk of flesh and metal torn from Fenn’s dead prey sailed its way, but the impromptu missile never found its mark. Moving as if creatures with their own consciousnesses, the mad one’s tentacles lashed out at the threat, grabbing the hound’s makeshift projectile and tearing it apart just like a kraken might rip a ship asunder. The defensive measure did take its toll, however, for the next second Lily cannoned toward it. Not able to counterattack, the Creatrix instead threw up her arms, a child protecting its face out of instinct, and the incoming blade cut into both wrists in a spray of ichor. The next second, Lily had passed her target, and nothing lay in range for the Creatrix to savage in repayment while her forearms eked light. A shriek of agony echoed out, though whether meant for the wound or the hatred was hard to say. Upon the Creatrix’s remaining branches, the candlelights flared to life with renewed fury, and the mad one’s aura of heat intensified drastically. Yellow lightning danced across its smaller tendrils whilst loci of plasma formed in the vents on her shoulders. The next moment, a fusillade of plasma bolts shot at the Creatrix’s assailant.

Lily landed a ways behind the Creatrix, turning in time to hear the furious scream and watch the bolts of plasma speeding her way. Her body reacted quicker than her brain, dashing to the side, but too slow. A shout of pain split the air, accompanied by the smell of seared flesh and fur.

Souta, having found an opponent, sprinted forward. His heavy stone armor made for slow going, but in no time at all he came close enough to wind his Trawlers up and let them loose in a double sweep at the Creatrix’s lower half. Just as before, her tentacles moved to intercept the threat, but this time they locked with the attack, unable to wrench the weapons into pieces as they had the piece of plaything moments ago. For the moment, her defense was down.

When Wrath turned to face the Creatrix, he found her both exposed and angry. With the tentacles trapped, he could make short work of them or the body they were attached to, but since they were fighting a god, or at least an echo of her power, he opted to remove the defense and made a run towards the ensnared tentacles. Reaching them, he sliced down on the appendages with a heavy, crushing blow.

Assailed on all sides by the Council’s agents, its attention focused on Lily, and its tentacles preoccupied by Souta’s and Wrath’s efforts, the Creatix’s options were rapidly dwindling. As if smelling the blood in the air, Fenn leaped into the opening, incandescent fangs bared to crush the mad creature’s throat.

Even to one abandoned by her senses, the unmistakable feeling of imminent danger provided a rousing impetus. Wrath and Fenn, each a titan in his own right, bore down on the Creatrix, and she turned to answer them. In the six ports on her shoulders, a broiling, baneful glow accumulated at frightening speed, just as the telltale glow of the earth’s molten core – or the bowels of hell – appeared before a plume of magma burst through the ground. An instant later, a six-pronged geyser of plasma rolled forth. Much too late to alter his path, the blast poured over the hound, sending him stumbling back with a furious howl equal parts pain and frustration. The force propelled the Creatrix backward, wrenching her tentacles free from Souta’s grip and putting an easy hundred meters between herself and her foes in scant seconds.

Even as the plasma accumulated, Wrath attempted to move, diving to the left. That attempt wasn’t quite enough, however, and he uttered a surprised cry of pain as two bolts still found their mark; one in the Nephilim’s gut and the other in the shin of his left leg. He rolled to a crouching position on one knee, the hand not holding Rage Bringer putting pressure on his gut. While there appeared to be no blood, better safe than sorry. He remained crouched, watching the fight unfold. He would need another opening before he could join the fight again and not for the first time he cursed himself for not getting a ranged weapon.

Ichor bled from a few gashes in her tentacles where she’d allowed Wrath to get too close. Now, though, the ball lay in her park. As if drunk, she began to sway, the amber aperture in her chitinous crown flashing rhythmically. Above the battlefield, the seal itself began to flash in accord.

Lily, still crouched down where the monster’s fire had scored her hide, looked up and gritted her teeth. The mad creature was preparing something. She pushed herself back up onto her paws, a recurve bow rapidly materializing in her hands. Even before it had fully formed, she had taken position to fire, a half-formed arrow nocked on the string. Two arrows fled her weapon in quick succession, but were both swatted out of the air by the Creatrix’ tentacles without so much as disturbing the drunken dance. Her eyes narrowed with something like annoyance, tinged with thoughtfulness. Perhaps if they could blind the creature, a projectile could go through that barrier. But she would need to be in a proper position to take advantage of it.

With the ritual uninterrupted, another whirl of matter came to be alongside the Creatrix, though this one substantially larger than those that brought into existence the blade-legged beasts. This time, when the maelstrom faded, a nightmarish thing malformed came to be. This one lay sprawled on the pool-strewn ground, having no legs to stand even had it the propriety to do so. Like a newborn babe it crawled, a mechanistic mewling echoing across the battlefield, toward its Creatrix’s foes to envelop them in its vile embrace.

Souta, now finished with a moment of rest, heaved a heavy, breathy sigh. He then started his jog toward the Creatrix, moving to the side as he did in the hopes of avoiding the mangled homunculus. To his hand he summoned Deluge, which his Firebrand Trigger immediately enhanced with a stony coating, and at a steady rate he unleashed bolts of fused fire in its direction.

“Steam! Block her vision!”

Even through the din of their fight, Lily’s voice cut clear through to Souta’s ears. She had morphed to her draconic visage, a greatbow replacing the recurve—arrow trained at the Creatrix’ chest, ignoring the newest monstrosity.

In response to Lily’s call, Souta ceased fire for a moment to hold out his other hand. Across it the flow of flame and lava increased, and their meeting sent a cloud of steam billowing around him. As this happened, the homunculus altered its path, evidently not pleased with the human’s painful spikes. Forgetting all about the steam, Souta trained his weapon on the Creatrix’ plaything and fired as fast as he could even as its shadow loomed over him, for not enough time remained for him to switch weapons. Heedless of the burning pain, the creature lifted up an arm to swat the fly before it.

There was a sound like thunder, and the shadow moved away from over him. Fenn had charged into the monster’s flank, the sudden tackle all but sending the lame infant sprawling on its side. The eager, near crazed look on the dog’s eyes as it jumped on the thing’s back – fangs and claws tearing at the flesh and shell of a screaming beast twice his size – did little to prove his rescue was more than a happy coincidence. A garbled yowl resounded as the homunculus felt pain for the first time and, eager, to end the tortuous sensation, it twisted itself onto its back in an endeavor to throw Fenn off or crush him beneath its weight. The dog allowed itself to slide off the thing’s back as the monster turned, teeth tearing a strip of flesh from its scalp as the thing tried to pull away from him. Chains unraveled and sought the wailing monster’s arms, trying to still the mangled thing’s struggle even as the demon sought its neck.

“Steam! Now!”

Lily’s snappish command tore Souta’s eyes from the brutal display. His voice, whether due to his armor or to some unnerving alteration beneath, rippled and reverberated as though he were trapped in the depths of a vast cave. “You blind!? There’s steam everywhere!” A proper haze wafted from his hand as he gesticulated at the growing clouds across the battlefield. Through the screen of mist, the glow of the Creatrix’s crown could still be seen. From this range, Deluge was practically useless, so the smith resumed his run forward. Surely, Fenn and Wrath could deal with the homunculus. A glance back over his shoulder confirmed that Lily still held her arrow nocked, ready to shoot. Was she waiting for permission? Probably not, but whatever. “Fire!” Souta bellowed as he thundered across the earth.

Meanwhile, beyond the veil of steam, the Creatrix was not exactly idle. Still locked in her eerie dance, she began to move her wretched form in new ways. Extra tendrils curled out from her thighs, hips, and calves; the two leathery strips that before flopped uselessly near her back stretched up, unfurling like wings.

The first arrow punched a hole through the mist, screaming for the Creatrix with deadly accuracy, even in this mist. There was a thud of the arrow hitting flesh and the rending sound of it tearing through the rest of her body, followed by a scream of pain and rage in equal measures. The Creatrix reeled, ichor streaming from both sides of her upper body, but she did not falter. Whatever fundamental organ that governed this alien being’s life was, evidently, not where one might find it in a human. A wave of searing heat washed across the terrain, melting away the bank of fog summoned by Souta. The agents of the Charred Council watched as the mad one’s leathery wings unfurled, and the paper-thin scales therein light up with the glow of fire. Defying her uncanny, obviously unsuitable form, the Creatrix lifted into the air. Below her, her tentacles streamed like a jellyfish’s, but they had nothing to do with her ascent; rather, the obscuring aura that surrounded the abhorrent madwoman hinted that she rose upon a massive heatwave of her own creation that her bizarre wings capitalized on.

Her body tilted forward as she started to glide, and from the ports on her shoulders, streams of plasma blasted down to scorch the earth. The Creatrix dove the agents’ way with not-insignificant speed, prepared to incinerate them in an extraordinary sort of bombing run.

As the Creatrix dove for the agents of the Council, Wrath was already up and moving as fast as he could with his wounds out of her path, diving to the right this time and then standing to run. He glanced over at the Hellhound as he worked on the newest of the Creatrix’s summon and decided that leaving only one of them to deal with it would be folly. Adjusting the angle of his run, Wrath charged forward and rammed the tip of Rage Bringer into the homunculus’ side, driving it in deep before tearing the blade out with a wrenching sound.

Even then, the presence of her creation did little to halt the mad creature’s assault, and the homunculus wailing screams resounded through the Seal’s altar as plasma indiscriminately washed over the infant and its assailants.

Lily's wings unfurled instinctively, spreading wide before beating down and lifting her into the air, quick enough to avoid the twin beams of plasma otherwise threatening to sear her.

In ordinary warfare, to control the sky, meant control over the battlefield, and they could not let the Creatrix gain any advantage if they were to have a sure chance of victory. Wrath and Fenn were keeping the homunculus busy, while Souta seemed ready to strike, whenever the opportunity presented itself.

Up above, Lily beat her wings again rising up above their opponent, to both gain the advantage of altitude and an overview of the battlefield. Twin beams of plasma still raked across the ground, leaving deep gouges wherever they struck. So far the Creatrix had proven to be formidable in the ways of magic, but she seemed to lack any threatening amount of physical prowess. That said, she was no ordinary being, as a pierced heart had barely slowed her, if she even had one. So it was with those thoughts in mind that Lily handled herself downwards, warhammer gripped in her clawed hands, and let gravity and a powerful beat of her wings propel her downwards, ready to shatter every bone in the body of her quarry and sent her crashing to the ground. There were very few beings she knew of that could move without bones, and the Creatrix did not seem to be one.

Among humans, many cases existed where the blind purportedly gained hypersensitivity in their other senses as if to make up for what they had lost. Newts and other crawling things that inhabited pitch-black caverns went without their sight entirely, instead relying on other senses. In the ocean’s depths, sharks hunt not be vision or hearing but by detecting the electric signals given off by the muscles of their prey, using a special sixth sense. So to did the Creatrix, malformed yet magnificence, survey the battlefield. Rather than using eyes to see, for she had none, she saw with heat itself. Its molten cascade upon the battlefield, scorching the stillborn homunculus to ashes while it shrieked and scattering the agents of the Charred Council lest they be charred to nothing more than cindered, told her that she had the advantage. Reveling in that freedom, she rained lightning-infused napalm upon the ground without restraint. A disturbance in her field of heat from above, however, stuck out like a sneeze at a silent auction.

The candlelights ablaze on the Creatrix’s remaining branches flared into a frenzied state, breathing a shower of sparks that shot skywards towards her assailant.

Too late, Lily realized the mistake she had made. At her speeds, she could only brace herself, wrapping her wings around her like a cocoon just before explosions engulfed her. Moments later, a blackened figure emerged from the conflagration, careening downwards in an uncontrolled plummet.

The Creatrix merely jerked to the side, letting the figure fly past her to crash on the ground below. The abomination returned her attention downwards, intent on scorching the remaining intruders, but in the short interim where she had been preoccupied with Lily, something had occurred. Cold, lifeless objects entered her field of vision. Her tentacles bunched up and swung like a pendulum in an effort to wrench her out of the way, but the chains followed her movement as though they had a life of their own and wrapped around what passed as the monster’s legs with crushing strength. The Creatrix screeched as the links grew taut, pulling her downwards from her perch in the sky even through the powerful updraft she had created.

Her tentacles smashed against the earth as she crashed, swaying as they took the landing’s impact in the stead of the Creatix’s humanoid body, but Fenn’s chains did not loosen. Standing next to the charred humunculous, the Hellhound drew his arms back with an impatient growl, forcing the Creatrix’s tentacles to anchor themselves to the rock platform to prevent her from being dragged away. There was a grinding sound, and a shrill cry escaped the Creatrix’s lips as her body turned into the rope for a tug-of war game between the chained hound’s unyielding binds and her resisting tendrils. Tentacles pressed around the chains themselves, attempting to pry them off, but the dog would not budge from his position, and the chains only wrapped themselves more tightly, refusing to be dislodged. The struggle shook loose waves of plasma sparks from the Creatrix’s branches to careen toward Fenn en masse, but even their chain explosion did not dissuade the hellbent hellhound.

In the throes of agony, the light in the crown’s opening took on a blinding radiance as the Creatrix turned her head towards the brutish demon.

Abruptly, a crystal spike found purchase in the Creatrix’s shoulder and just as suddenly exploded, blowing open second hole on her torso. The wounded goddess let out another shriek, her body contorting in pain and the light in her crown losing some of its brilliance.

Souta’s hate-filled eyes remained fixed on the writhing creature as he readjusted his aim. A second spike sailed over the mad one as she tried to twist away away, but a third punched into the Creatrix’s hand as she vainly brought it up to defend itself. The next second the fused fire exploded, ripping the appendage open and sending ichor and fingers flying.

This was the end. If the creature continued to resist, it would be torn in apart by the Hellhound’s chains or be slowly obliterated by the Smith’s enchanted weaponry. Could it be that a mad god would be brought low by a pack of outsiders—by this capricious rabble!?

A pitiful wail surged from behind Fenn, as though refuting the battle’s conclusion. The hound barely had time to throw a glance behind him before the homunculus’s burned arm crashed against him. Unprepared as he was, the blow sent the hound hurtling to the side. Having used the last of its strength on the intruders that had harmed its mother so, the infant monster let out one last harrowing cry, then fell limply in place, dead.

The dog stood again drunkenly, the blow having disoriented him only momentarily, but the interruption had tipped the balance of the struggle. The moment Fenn’s chains slackened, the Creatrix had slipped out of the restraints.

No sooner had the lunatic been freed than she hurled her tentacles towards Souta with a speed made terrifying by desperation, and the human barely had time to throw himself out of the way before he was struck. Even the glancing blow walloped his rock carapace, fracturing his defense and sending him rolling across the ground

As the smith tried to scramble back to his feet, he was treated to a perfect view of his encroaching doom. The Creatrix approached him, her tentacles carrying her towards his prone form. Those writhing limbs held up the Creatrix’s body like a broken puppet. One of her arms ended at the wrist, ichor bleeding profusely from the wound Deluge had inflicted, mixing into a puddle with the liquid oozing from the holes in the creature’s chest and shoulder. But perhaps most frightening was the easily recognizable, almost human grimace of pain and rage that twisted the mad one’s features.

As one, every light surrounding the Creatrix’s mangled body grew in brightness as they prepared to incinerate the invader before her.

The sound of running footsteps coming from behind interrupted her. The Creatrix turned and found Wrath rapidly approaching her. The Nephilim, knowing he wouldn’t reach her before her rage was unleashed on him in Souta’s stead, hurled Rage Bringer at the crazed goddess, the weapon rapidly spun end over end before burying itself in her chest, sending another spray of blood across the ground on impact. The blow staggered her long enough for him to close the remaining distance. Wrath leapt onto the Creatrix’s suspended body and grabbed the hilt of his weapon, feet pressing against the Creatrix’s mangled midriff.

“Rest in pieces, bitch.”

Heaving, Wrath brought his great sword up in a vertical slice, turning the Creatrix’s upper body into two halves as he jumped off of her and away from the suddenly writhing tentacles. A hiss escaped his lips as he landed, but the warrior wasted no time in making his next move. Wrath sheathed his sword and flicked his wrists to extend the blades of his Wrath Dealers before vaulting over the monster. A writhing tendril reflexively lashed out to meet him, but he spun over it, his clawed blades flashing out mid-pirouette.

He landed behind the monster, legs buckling on impact. The Nephilim fell to his knees, breathing heavily as his free hand reached towards his wounded side.

A few paces behind him, the twin halves of the Creatrix’s head flopped meatily onto the ground, neatly severed where the metal had met flesh. They were soon followed by the rest of the fallen goddess’s corpse.

Slowly, the spread of shining golden ichor across the ground grew dull, mixing with the ankle-deep pools littering the battlefield like an oil spill to produce a dimly shimmering sludge reminiscent of opal. In this liquid's surface, the brilliant glow of the Seal reflected, but it wasn't the only light. Little bursts of teal and what appeared to be rainbow speckled its surface as well. Souta, shedding his armor and ready to be relieved that the fight with the Creatrix had ended, furrowed his brows. As he brushed the last of his stony armor off his shoulders and head, revealing his flushed but otherwise normal skin beneath, he tilted his head straight back to look upward.

Once the brightness of the Seal ceased to dazzle him, he could make out something happening above. High above in the air around the Seal, two shapes danced back and forth. One, a blot of wispy darkness that chiefly discharged waves of emerald fire, he suspected was Panoptos. That could only mean that the winged, lustrous bronze figure that accompanied him was another enemy. From so far below, Souta couldn't discern any details, but traces of bright, cool blue around it reminded him of ice, and the rainbow light fired off in beams and explosive orbs invoked the splendid spectacle known as the aurora borealis. Souta wondered whether or not he and the other agents should be helping. If he were in better shape, and Panoptos hadn't been so abrasive during the entire time the smith had known him, Souta might have jumped to do his duty, but for now he merely settled for pointing the aerial battle out. ”Hey, look way up there. Our ol' buddy's fighting someone too.”

No sooner had the words left his mouth than a particularly large burst of prismatic energy exploded far above. Souta watched as Panoptos was blasted downward toward the group, cannoned downward by the force of a beam from his unknown assailant. The watcher drew closer and closer until he slammed into the ground, dissolving in a burst of black smoke. Souta, equals parts unconcerned by the bothersome geist's apparent demise and shocked by the power of what was certainly an enemy to be able to facilitate it, didn't know what to think. Regardless, Panoptos reformed from his figurative ashes only a moment later, glowing at the group. ”Finally done with the looney, are you all? In case you haven't noticed, I've been having a problem up there.” Despite the contempt in his tone, he gave every impression of sniggering. ”Heheh...well, joke's on him. I finished before he arrived, so he has to take me down before he can get at the Seal to stop the shift. Plenty of time for you layabouts to knock him down a peg or two, I should think.”

Souta wasn't paying him too much attention. Instead, his eyes lay upon the being floating downward toward the Agents at a steady pace. If he had to pick any one word to describe this mysterious threat, it would be 'bizarre'. Possessing a male physique molded out of what appeared to be burnished copper, he possessed a rather demonic set of horns and tail as well as a pair of black wings. Lines and loci of icy-blue power festooned his form. This being gave no indication that he was going to attack—in fact, despite being a part of what Souta could only assume to be a fierce battle, he looked completely at ease. Light as a feather, he landed, careful to place his talon-sporting blue feet on dry ground. Eerily calm, and wearing a curious look he stared at the group.

”So, you are this watcher's allies? I am not unimpressed to see you up close. A caught a glimpse whilst you fought the poor soul, this realm's Deposed Creatrix. Good work. It is a sorry task to put a rabid beast out of its misery. You must understand, I am not here to fight you.” He tilted his head to the side and slightly back, holding his hands close to his neck with his fingers splayed in an odd pose. His tail curled and uncurled like a cat's, its every swing leaving behind a split-second misty trail. ”Allow me to introduce myself. I am...Aeon! A spirit of preservation wholeheartedly dedicated to the pursuit of a perfect, unchanging world, beautiful as a rainbow on a rainy day and as permanent as the polar chill. I was here to secure the Seal, for my mission would be undone if Hell's plot to bring Armageddon succeeds.”

A sour laugh burst from Panoptos. ”I'll bet! Why then, my flamboyant friend, did you assault a servant of the Charred Council? What reason could you possibly have to convince me to not sic my pets on your shiny hide this instant?”

Breathing a sigh, Aeon shrugged. When he spoke, he talked past the watcher, addressing the Agents directly. ”Pets? He doesn't even try to hide that he is manipulating you. His stone-faced bosses are a little better, but all the same, can you not see you are being played for fools?” He clasped over his chest. ”I got a little rough with shady here because having the Seals in the Council's possession is no better than having them in demons'. Had you any awareness of the Council's actions taken to enforce their authority over the eons, you would be as wary as I.”

The sneer of Panoptos turned into a vicious bark. ”Enough! No more sweet-talk! These warriors are here because they know they're doing the right thing for all of creation! We're the ones doing the hard work to save it, not letting someone else do the work and then jumping in to steal the show. Could you be act any more like the typical villain?” Around his fist, a torrent of ash swirled. Far removed from his typical holier-than-thou attitude, the watcher seemed defensive.

A heartbroken look entered Aeon's face. He frowned and took a step back. ”Alas. If you all have gotten this far, though, it means you truly think you are fighting for what is right. I hope when we meet again you will have seen the truth of my words. In the spirit of understanding, I will leave this seal to the Council for now. Farewell.” Barely had the word left Aeon's mouth than he vanished in a shimmer of multicolored light, like a mirage.

Panoptos killed his magic, then crossed his arms. ”So what if I don't give you all enough credit? You know what you've accomplished. I know you're too smart to be taken in by that...that saboteur. Come now, the demons will be here any minute.” The golden light flooding Wit's End blinked off and then on again, causing Souta to glance up. Seeing this the watcher said, ”It'll be in the Council's private space in just a few moments. We'll be warped along with it, then I'll patch us through to the Citadel.”

Akoni took a moment to thank the mysterious ally they had on this mission as her holy fire burned away the flesh of the horror he had spent much time destroying. Once the task was complete, they began to move forward. Once they emerged into the study, Fiametta took instant notice of a particular book, but the old mage had already been drawn toward it. Fiametta's words went unanswered as Akoni's eyes drifted over the tome, his fingers ran along the spine. Memories of a time long since past resurfaced. He saw flashes of cultists, blood sacrifices, and pain. The searing heat had been, possibly, the most vivid memory.

"I cannot be certain without first confirming the contents, but I believe a grimoire just like this was once in the possession of..." Akoni faltered and gave pause just a moment before speaking the word "family." They were no family. Not to him. That was so long ago it might as well have been eons, so why did he still struggle with that? "Some very bad people I was once familiar with."

Breathing out a small sigh, the elder wizard mumbled a minor incantation and gestured upward with his middle and index finger on his left hand. The levitation spell took hold, causing the book to lift upward. Another incantation and his eyes glowed a bright blue for but a moment, then the book folded in on itself until it had vanished completely. It had not been destroyed, simply stored away. A minor spell for a wizard specializing in spacial warping. He then observed the rest of the study before joining his compatriots in the journey forward.

Akoni steeled himself as the chapel door opened inward and a rush of supernatural fear flooded outward. This was nothing he had not experienced before--many supernatural beings generated this manner of aura. The trick was not appearing to be intimidated, and not letting these artificial emotions affect your judgment. So Akoni's eyes narrowed into a sterner appearance even as his heart began to race. He would face this new monster and slay it just as every other he had encountered.

Fenn let out a disappointed grunt as he watched the Creatrix’s headless body collapse near the human and Nephilim. The crazed monster had dutifully eluded his fangs throughout the skirmish. It was ironic, in a way. The creature may have seemed insane, but an instinctive sense of self-preservation had been sharp and present.

Insanity that wished to persist. The mere thought soured his mood, which in turn brought to mind the other demon in their entourage.

He had lost the Imp during the battle, when she had been blasted out of the sky. The dog’s nose twitched as glanced around, trudging towards her landing spot. It would be irritating if he found her dead so early into their partnership. As a way to renege on a deal, it was a very effective method.

Fenn found Lily splayed on her back and with her eyes closed some distance away from a networks of cracks on the stone he assumed had come from her crash. At first he thought it was folded under her body, but as he approached, he realized one of demoness’s draconic wings had all but disintegrated, leaving behind a blackened stump and a scrap of tattered webbing behind. Severe burns covered much of her torso, leftovers from the Creatrix’s aerial assault.

As the Hound’s lumbering steps drew closer, the shapeshifter stirred. Her hand went to her head, and she groaned groggily.

“Ow. That hurt.”

“You live,” the dog observed dryly.

“Obviously. You’ve done worse to me in the past. This is nothing new.” She sat up, looking around. Her eyes fell upon still body of the Creatrix. “Well, at least we managed to kill... whatever that thing was.”

The dog hummed, a noncommittal rumble in his throat. Comparing those wounds to ones he had dealt felt odd, but the Imp was not of his kind. Her wounds were different to his. Though certainly fiery, the power wielded by the mad goddess could hardly be called flame. Mere flame would not have given him pause.

His body spoke for itself. His hide seemed to sag in various places, as if it was not properly attached to the meat below. The commonly soot black scales in those areas had lost some of their darkness, acquiring a milky, transparent quality to them as they begun to peel away from his body. His right eye’s vision was blurry, and the dog suspected a trickle of blood and smoke was pouring from its edge. He knew from experience that shedding the damaged scales would only take a few hours at worst, but it could not be denied that his body had not taken well to the foreign power.

“Aye. But there is more. Look to the seal,” Fenn answered, craning his neck around.

Up above, at the source of the radiance that bathed the area there was a large prismatic burst, and the shadowy form of Panoptos plummeted to the ground. A smug smirk formed on the dog’s muzzle. That gave some confirmation to his thoughts that the Watcher was vulnerable outside of the Council’s jurisdiction. Indeed, standing back and seeing whether that was truly the case was an interesting proposition.

“He deserved that,” the demoness muttered with a self-satisfied smirk. “Glorified slave bossing us around.” She stood up, spending a few moments to look herself over. She grunted something about looking vulnerable, and then simply seemed to shrink; tail and wings receding, scales disappearing and horns crumbling to nothing. What was left was a tall and dark haired woman, seemingly unhurt.

"Shall we?" she asked, looking up at Fenn then nodding towards the fallen Watcher.

Fenn grunted an affirmative. It seemed little would be gained from waiting regardless. The interloper had lost much of its hostility once it had knocked Panoptos out of the sky, floating down to address the group as they approached. A regrettable turn of events, truly. The being’s first sentence had not completely reached his ears before the hound decided he would like to see it quartered, and now he lacked an excuse to do so.

“May I eat it?” he asked plainly.

Lily looked to contemplate it for a moment. “I advise against it. I don’t think copper is good for your stomach, dear Hound.”

The dog’s throat rumbled thoughtfully. They reached the group a moment after, just as the winged creature finished its introduction.

Fenn stood behind Lily, watching the proceedings through veiled eyes. It quickly became apparent that this conversation was irrelevant to him. He was far from caring about which side he fought for, as long as battle could be promised. Neither did Panoptos’s lip service to the moral probity of their mission impress him. The dog had long ceased to search for righteousness in his causes. And even were this not the case, the shade and its leaders had struck him as conniving snakes that could not be trusted the moment they had reached out to them. Instead, he glanced down at his Warleader. It was her who had chosen to throw her lot in with the Council, and thus it was her and the others to whom the contents of this conversation were addressed to.

However, Lily seemed as uninclined to participate in the conversation as he was. Odd. He was not quite sure what to make of her sudden taciturnity.

Soon enough, the conversation reached its end, and the copper creature retreated, ceding the Seal with no further conflict. The dog let out a deep breath. By the flames, that thing had irked him.

For his part, Panoptos turned to address the group. “Come now, the demons will be here any minute. It'll be in the Council's private space in just a few moments. We'll be warped along with it, then I'll patch us through to the Citadel.”

Lily straightened at that, planting her hands in her hips. “Actually, we’ve been here the entire time.” She waved a hand at herself and Fenn. “I figured nine eyes made for better eyesight… guess I was wrong.”

Mad World - Epilogue

@zarkun@lazo@kapuchu

As stumped as the watcher had been a minute ago, Panoptos' disdainful snarkiness returned in full force with remarkable speed. His emerald eyes glittered as he hung his head with sarcasm, saying, ”I can see plenty well. For instance, I can see that if you aren't within thirty meters of the seal within forty-five seconds, you'll miss your ride and be left in this stinking sky to rot. And here I thought you didn't like this place...guess I was wrong.” Cackling, the specter ascended as if shot from a cannon, a smoky trail left in his wake. As he became a black smudge next to the glory of the Seal, which by now was flickering dangerously, his cheerily condescending tone echoed down to the group. ”Before you get smart with me, try and remember who your lives are at the mercy of! Didn't you hellspawn ever learn to not bite the hand that feeds you?”

As far as he was concerned, Souta felt gratified that he'd avoided Panoptos' rebuke. As much as he loathed the stuck-up shadow, he was the smith's boss, and in his time on earth Souta had learned that one could either suck it up and work under a bad boss or lose one's livelihood. Still, Panoptos' announcement of the Agents' impending time limit took him by surprise. ”Forty-five seconds?!” Water sprang from his clothes and flooded across his arms into his hands, becoming both the rifle Deluge and a Trawler. He jammed the butt of the hook into the barrel of the gun, took aim at the massive target hovering above, and fired. The crystalline spike carried the hook with it to the end of its range, made possible solely by the magic projectile's lack of bullet drop. When it got too close to the Seal's power, the spike exploded in midair, launching the hook into the Seal itself. A few experimental tugs confirmed that the hook was jammed in, and with less than twenty seconds left Souta activated the Trawler to reel him in. He zoomed upward at a dizzying rate, holding on to his weapon's chain for dear life.

In the aftermath

Wrath's breathing had grown heavier after his elaborate move to remove the mad goddess' head, but he was hardly noticing the pain. He was too busy enjoying the fact the he could now add "God Slayer" to his resume should he ever need to name his accomplishments. However, a sharp twinge of pain racking his abdomen when he tried to stand up reminded him that the action was not going to be so forgettable for the time they'd remain in the Under Sky. The impact of their shadowy guide hitting the ground brought him out of thoughts, but the burnished bronze figure in front of him, who had descended from the sky shortly after Panoptos' landing, set the Nephilim on edge. Everything he said he sounded convinced of, and while no one LIKED the Charred Council, no one could deny that they had always done their job well.

However, the figure did not pick a fight and vanished shortly after Panoptos came back with a counter argument and some accusations. Regardless, the figure's disappearance set the Nephilim at ease. Aeon...interesting name... He puzzled on it while Lily made jabs at their guide, but was jolted to reality once more by the Watcher's statement. He had 45 seconds to find a way up to the seal. "...Ass." Spotting a piece of the Seal floating lower than the others, he hurled Rage Bringer at it, receiving a satisfying sounding thunk when the blade stuck as intended.

With one last look around, the Nephilim crouched and leapt once more, his side and leg groaning in protest at the action, but he managed to catch the hilt of his sword regardless. He swung up on top of the weapon then the top of the small piece, repeating the process to put himself standing on his sword on the seal itself. He, of course, knew that his weapon was far from enough to shatter the seal, so he didn't worry too much.

Mary watched, ever so slightly awed, as Nero got to work on weakening the Blitz for her. He activated his Devil Trigger, summoning the ghost of an ancestor to aide him in breaking the shield, cleverly allowing it to do all the damage so he wouldn't get it. Finally breaking the shield with an explosive revolver shot, Mary followed his signal and leaped high up into the air, both weapons poised to strike. Piercing the demon's hide with her blade and jotun, Mary intensified the vibrations in both blades and bisected it with two swift cuts away. For flair, she finished it off with a few quick slashes from her scimitar not unlike an aerial rave.

Mary landed gently on the ground, as the demon's corpse crashed down beside her. "Thank you for your help, Field Commander Nero. As much as I'd like to stay, I have important business to attend to. Protecting the seals and all that. Give Hunter my regards, if you could?"

Lily smiled.

He may have attempted to cover it up, but given his response she could safely surmise that she had beaten him in this verbal spar. Under normal circumstances, he would most likely have simply insulted her intelligence, or something equally petty. Yet he had resorted to something just shy of a threat, as if expecting the prospects of a violent death, to be would, of all things, intimidate a demon. She had heard a saying that someone who reminded others that they were King, was in fact no true king. It stood to reason, then, that one was no true leader, boss, master, or otherwise if seemingly empty threats was the reply, to jabs at the intelligence of their alleged leader.

Of course that did not mean that Panoptos was not correct, in at least one of his statements. If they did not exit the Undersky, before their method of transportation disappeared, they themselves would end up stranded. So once again, Lily's body changed, contorting in ways that should have been impossible according to all known science. But Demons were not someone who often cared about petty things such as "Science."

Two draconic wings erupted from her back, along with a long tail, and claws. As if to test them, Lily flapped her wings weakly a few times, causing her to lift off from the ground and come back down again with the audible click of claws on stone.

For all of her bravado, and her attempts to look unfazed by her previous injuries, however, adopting her dragon-like appearance had taxed her. Not because the shape shifting in and of itself was tiring, but because what wounds she had sustained were no longer visible. They weren't healed, and she still remained as hurt as she had been beforehand, but her abilities allowed her to regrow the wing that had been destroyed, but at the cost of large portions of her fortitude. A combat move it would never be, as she became no healthier than she had been before and the cost was simply too high. It would have been easier to simply let it heal and regrow naturally, but to do so would not only be a show weakness; and would also be admitting that she had been wounded severely. More importantly, it would also make it annoyingly difficult to reach the Seal.

So she forced herself to breathe evenly, to not look winded, and turned to Fenn. "Do you want me to carry you up there?" She asked, casting a glance at the shining Beacon for way of clarification. When her eyes fell back upon the hellhound, she found herself faced with an absolutely mordant look. "I'll take that as a no. Suit yourself." She then turned back toward the Seal, taking off with a powerful beat of her wings. Up to join her fellow agents of The Charred Council.

And one insufferable moron.
