I don't really have "hitting a wall" problems so much as issues with a shortage of free time lately.

About the closest I get to hitting the wall is being frustrated that a post is not as good as I want it to be... and generally I get past that by hitting submit and moving on to the next one.

I've only dropped one post in here so far, and to be perfectly honest I didn't feel it was as good as I'm capable- I didn't feel remotely good about it - and from feedback it seems that's more of a "me" problem than anyone else, because it seems to have been pretty well received.

Sometimes that "Post Reply" button is all it takes.

I'm also thinking of picking up a Gotham based sheet - we have quite the hub forming there, and it might be nice to jump in somewhere active with another "Roaming".

Also... I may be using it somewhat as practice for another game elsewhere...

Hmmm. I would say that a big one for me when it comes to writer's block is that it almost always happens if I am stressed, tired, not eating right, etc. I always try to make sure I am awake, in a good mood, and really want to actually sit down and write something. Of course that isn't always possible and at sometimes it can be almost impossible.

However recently I have had some thoughts on how to try and help myself move forward in writing stuff. Like trying not to think up stuff I could do for other characters instead of just focusing on the ones I made. Try and write a bit of an outline and plan for what I want to do instead of just winging it with no real direction and hoping something sticks. And mostly try to relax and not get bogged down with things, I think since I took roaming characters I feel less pressure because I think well I can actually take my time and try to develop my understanding and feel for a character as I go even as if that takes a long time, and THEN I can give them their own story where they are the driving force.

I initially was a bit worried about not being able to do characters justice but then I kind of thought about it and figured. Well 1. I am not a professional writer so I should be realistic in my standards for what 'doing justice' to a character even is and 2. I may like these characters, but I have never written for them before so naturally for any character I write it's going to take a while to develop my interpretation and personal understanding of them in that regard.

Ofc that isn't going to make me feel like I can just pump out stuff that i think is bad but it does sort of help because no matter what when I finish a post I get very anxious and hesitant to actually send it, worrying if there's anything I could do to fix it up even though I know after another rewriting of it I will feel the exact same.

I was mentioning to @Hillan earlier that I'm having some issues getting excited about my characters, particularly Carol. Thought I'd bring the conversation and open it up to the group. What do you guys do when you're hitting a wall? Do you work through it or do you tend to move in a new direction instead?

I hit the wall a lot, often because I plot out my characters well in advance in terms of what story I want to tell, and then find my actual product fails to live up to the narrative I have constructed in my head, either in terms of entertainment value, intended emotional impact, style of prose, or poor pacing. Either that, or I plot out 'Middle' and 'End', but don't plan 'Start'. So then when I leave myself alone to write 'Start' without plans, I flounder. Obviously the former stems from my own issues with perfectionism and self-esteem (an ongoing journey as I move towards my 30's and a more mature stage of my life and face into some ugly truths and toxic self-beliefs), but the latter is a clear objective in terms of finding a fix.

When I do hit that wall though, I tend to either shut down completely, or just sit down and force myself to write. More often than not, when I make myself write, I can break through and enter a flow state that leaves me wondering why I put it off so long in the first place.

I also tend to naturally drift towards new narratives and concepts, but I think this is less about find a way to work around the wall, and more a natural inclination/craving for novelty and something new, which is something that pervades all aspects of my life and personality for better and worse. New is shiny and exciting.

i think that if you plot out a story and stick to it too rigorously, you miss out on the chance to discover your story along the way as you write it. real, professional level writers often deviate from their planned out plot when they find the story, or the story finds them, in the middle of their first draft. some writers dont even plot it out that much at all, they just set the pieces in place and watch how they flal.

thats especially relevant in a multi-player format like this where your story can be influenced by the actions of other players. unpredictability should be apart of the fun. sounds like some people are building a knee high wall, and then headbutting it, lol. jump for it, man!

Just a note for everyone, particularly @AndyC who's waiting on me: I recently started work at a new job and its absolutely goddamn killing me. Been passing out after every single shift so far, and I've had zero time to crack down and write posts for anything. Going to attempt to put something together on my days off, but uhhh my response time has dropped drastically. Sorry!

I've been back and forth on a few different concepts over the last few days, and I've finally put something together which I think is fun. I had to change a few things about to fit this world, and as always, I'm happy to change things up if needed.

Those of you who aren't on Discord don't need to know that Friday is indistinguishable from Monday.

I'm looking to get Frank in the mix with the following posts. The set-up is done - it's time to go kill some pedos.

on the complete opposite end of the murder spectrum from Mister Castle, here comes Cassandra. it's kind of a long one...went under several drafts, haha. But here it is. I've been meaning to write a big fight scene with Cassandra for a while now. I'm sure i'll improve with time and practice.

anyway. I've gone ahead and nabbed an obscure Mutant from the X-Men corner of the marvel universe for this next arc. Let me know if that's a problem.

marvel.fandom.com/wiki/Leon_Nunez_(Ea…

That tattoo parlor artist lady at the beginning gave Bruno the power of dragons breath with her tattoo by accident. Now it'll be a little bit of a mystery as mutant incidents start increasing in a localized area Batgirl patrols often. And she'll have to save Bruno from the trouble he's in, whatever that ends up being.

I've set the Bruno encounter at the end at an undisclosed time so, Cassandra won't be immediately aware of the danger for a while or until I want her too, so she can still be around for other Gotham interactions until she gets distracted by the events of the story beats.

Bruno, by the way, is also a gender bent version of an obscured Batman villain that I consider very...poorly designed, lol.

Looks like I'm going to have to throw together another solo post (to jump forward and hint towards a future arc) just to nudge the deadline along.

Back at work in another week, but it's tough to find the time whilst I'm still at home.
