Kazenosuke proved to be quite an enigma himself. Io had projected very little chance of success with her move, but he responded favourably enough. She would take any victories she could get. Though she had recovered energy through various other methods, her most preferred one was woefully neglected ever since her stay at Shizuyama began - something she was prepared for, but not necessarily enthusiastic about.
Leaving aside her inner thirst, Io turned her attention to a newly familiar presence - Alice. After their sparring session, there was no mistaking her, even without sight. She could tell the others noticed her too. "Another task force member." She briefly explained to Kazenosuke, not sure if she should go into any further detail than that. She turned and said to the her fellow task force members, "If you think she needs help, I can take Kazenosuke back to the temple on my own." She wasn't sure if they had a better intuition for what Alice might be doing, so she volunteered in case they felt the need to pivot their plans.
Of course that would also leave Io alone with the newly recruited swordsman, which was a win in her eyes. Not that she would admit that directly... Nor did she really expect any actual sudden developments from being alone with him, either, but Io preferred to play to any chance she might get. She nodded to herself. "He will be safe. Rest assured." She seized her grimoire, as if brandishing it would serve to emphasize her protective prowess.
After the bolt of magically charged energy whizzed past Kerry's head, both the hornet and the gremlin were caught completely off-guard. Relica blinked in confusion at first, trying to process what had just happened and why. Then it all clicked. She'd seen this before after all. Well, not exactly this, but situations and scenarios similar to it. Internally, she berated herself for having overlooked the matter, but there was no time for long-winded, introspective monologues and flashbacks with lots of background and character-building right now. Kerry was about to flip her lid and that wasn't good for anyone.
As the hornet readied herself to engage the traitorous automaton, the short gremlin did her best to endure the whipping winds and surging magic energy that was forming around her companion's weaponry, slowly getting closer until she was right next to her.
And then, she put one of her tiny gloved hands on Kerry's left forearm.
"Ker, she didn't attack you. If she had, your head wouldn't be attached to your body anymore." Relica stated, in a very morbidly blunt fashion. "She did this because of me, well, because I socked that baldie." She explained, trying to calm the angry merc down. of coursse, Relica wasn't exactly in her greatest state of mind either, and the whipping and surging of Kerry's magic wasn't really helping things.
In fact, it kinda sorta really hurt and was extremely unpleasant, and the fact that the little gremlin's clothes were opejn in the front for the most part sure as heck didn't help matters. With a scowling face and narrowed eyes, the green little monster did her best to endure though.
"C'mon, let's not do this. The only ones who gain by you beating her up, or she blowing you up, are the Varjans... And the locals, I 'spose." She urged, although it was hard not to want to just use her mechanical arms to grab and pin the hornet down and drag her off forcefully.
... But doing that would have undeniably long-lasting negative consequences far beuyond what Relica was willing to endure, especially after the most recent events. She just wanted to leave this stupid hamlet, these stupid people and go back to the temple and recollect.
It was also worth mentioning that in no way was Relica's words or voice soft and/or soothing. In fact, she sounded a bit like she'd taken a huge bite out of a lemon and was just barely keeping her own shit together. But the last thing she wanted was for her colleagues and compatriots to try and rip each others' heads off because of some stupid bald monk who deserved every bit of what he'd gotten... And then some...
"Let's go back to that temple. You and her can work things out there later, alright?" There was a lot of strain in Relica's voice.
... Wait. What was that about gold? And what had Kerry thrown into that tree before she began threatening Eula? ... Was that... A bag of money? No. She hadn't.... She didn't, right? ...
... Things just kept getting better and better.
At least she'd been lucky enough that Eula's blaster bolt hadn't hit the back of her M.E.E.P pack. If it had, she wouldn't be standing here anymore... And Kerry would've gotten caught in the blast too. She should really see about reinforcing the frame of it once she got back to her workbench... Provided Kerry and Eula didn't start going at one another... 'Cuz trying to act like a wall between the two would not be easy or pleasant in the slightest.
“Ah, right. Thought you meant another.” Skarsneek quickly corrected himself as Yurine mentioned the kind of seal, which honestly befuddled him. This sort of arcane wasn’t his forte.
But he had a good memory, so Skarsneek had to trace the character out and look for the numerous seal that actually fit the bill.
Yurine was already ahead of him as she placed another seal on Hinami, stating that it would put her in a docile state.
Skarsneek shrugged and only tightened his hold gently around his sister-in-law should anything happen.
“Hinami, you okay?” Skarsneek gently asked after Yurine stuck the piece of seal on her.

Gringor of the Ironhide Tribe
Gringor gave a thoughtful as he heard about this chi shield requirements.
“Can’t do peaceful but can do calm. Like hunting.” He waved his hand, besides, those Dragon Warriors used it in battle. So it was possible to be used in battle, that alone was enough to make it worth learning. Though when he heard the other requirement, he furrowed his brows. That would explain why Yurine got the drop on them.
But at the same time, did it mean he could’ve just grappled them down to the ground the moment they used those shields?
Something to do later.
“A moment or instant is enough, can use to block or become hard when enemy charge.” Undeterred, Gringor said as he figured out different ways to use it offensively.
“So, what I need to do?” He open his arms wide, wondering how this works.
Frowning as Shizuka begun to lecture her, Yuki let out a soft sigh and heard him out. Puffing her cheeks out as she pouted. “I just wanted to kick his butt, he attacked me first……but fine….I’ll try to keep myself under control next time….” Keeping her head turned to the side as she traced circles in the dirt with her foot. Feeling a bit embarrassed about the whole ordeal as she wanted to forget all about it and put it behind her. Thankfully Io gave her that chance in short order.
Turning her head towards Io and Kazenosuke, Yuki couldn’t help but to pause for a moment. Finding it interesting as Io was no doubt interested in their new ally. Blinking her eyes a few times as she started snicker off to the side “On your own, and he will be safe? Oh….I can imagine he will be quite safe….a lot more safe then he ever bargained for….” Yuki teased as she placed her hands on her lips leaning forward.
“Though, not to worry, you may have him all too yourself, I’m not quite….as fond of him” Smiling as she gave a small wink to Io. “As for me, I think I’ll head back too the temple as well, I need to recover a bit of energy. It’s been a while since I had to get physical” Stretching her arms up above her head as she tried to loosen up. Having to use far more energy than she had to use in quite some time. There was no doubt Kazenosuke was a crafty warrior, after all he had made quite a fool of her.
Which wasn’t something she was too pleased about, after all it was often her that was making fools of others. But to have the tables turned on her like that, she didn’t want to fall victim to it again. She felt like letting out a little bit of steam, maybe pulling a few pranks to get her mood back in order. At the very least, she was glad that this mission had ended, and they had accomplished the goal. Deep down she did hope that Io and Shizuka didn’t judge her too harshly for her little outburst. After all the trio had only recently gotten acquainted as she had not worked with them before. Feeling like she had made a bit of a poor first impression and wanting to refresh back at the temple. Not having really interacted with Alice before, feeling it was best that Shizuka took care of it.
Relica and Kerry's retaliation for the prank left the monk unconscious on the floor while the mother took her child and fled the house screaming.
Several villagers in the secluded settlement opened their doors to see what was going on. But upon seeing Eula and Kerry squaring off, they immediately shut their doors and closed their windows. The air swirling around Kerry was just more evidence that this altercation will get destructive very quick and that all they could do was huddle in their homes and hope they don't get caught in the crossfire.
Even the animals have fled, the tweeting birds flying away and the chittering insects skulking back to their burrows. Now, only the winds could be heard between the feuding taskforce members.
The stage was set, and all that was left was for Eula or Kerry or Relica to make their next move.
Shizuka said that he would be going after their fellow taskforce member, leaving Kazenosuke in the care of Io and Yuki.
"He will be safe. Rest assured."
“As for me, I think I’ll head back too the temple as well, I need to recover a bit of energy. It’s been a while since I had to get physical”
Kazenosuke chuckled. "I am very much capable of defending myself, ladies." He remarked. "Although I supposed I don't mind some beautiful company."
---
Unfortunately for Io, she was with Yuki as they escorted Kazenosuke to Terauchi Temple. The trip through the dirt roads were uneventful until they ascended a mountain path and got a good look at a portion of Shizuyama's many shorelines.
The trio saw ships of varying sizes occupying the water, it was the Varjan blockade said to have surrounded the island. The waters were not completely filled, but there were enough that even a small vessel will be easily spotted by any lookout on the Varjan ships. Meanwhile on the land, several thick smoke stacks could be seen rising to the sky. Likely coming from the villages and homesteads hit by the Varjans.
Kazenosuke spent a few moments just staring at the sights before letting out a heavy sigh. "Say, yokai..." He called out to Io and Yuki. "Be honest with me, do we... does Shizuyama actually have a chance?"
The rainbow knight covered his ears and recoiled from Alice's loud demand. "Alright! I'm sorry, I'm sorry, okay? You're the most awesomest Queen ever and Shizuyama is graced by your blessed presence. You have the island's eternal gratitude and all that." He quickly apologized. "Please don't call for my manager, I beg you! I'm almost Company member of the year and a complaint now is seriously gonna ruin my chances!"
Glancing at the still-dueling Carroll and the Whimsy blade, the knight leaned towards Liliana and whispered. "Uhh, are we sure those two are gonna be alright?"
After talking with Musubi, Takeshi left the pagoda with Lunatea. The Nurarihyon brought news from Lady Kyouko, saying that the Inari had a fleet awaiting to attack the Varjan blockade but needed a friendly port or the fleet will get worn down through attrition. Musubi said she would help the taskforce from the shadows as that was more her thing.
Somehow, Takeshi and Lunatea were together again, making things a little awkward considering their earlier interaction. Scratching the back of his head, Takeshi could not help but sigh. "Well, I guess we're together again." He remarked. The young lord was looking for something to separate from Lunatea and escape the awkardness, but decided not to.
"...You know, now that I thought about it." Takeshi started. "Had... everything been vastly different, I'd definitely consider getting together with you." He flashed her a goofy, yet genuine, smile.
“A moment or instant is enough, can use to block or become hard when enemy charge. So, what I need to do?”
"Indeed, that is the most common application of the technique for the novices." Nobutada nodded. "Become untouchable for the strongest strikes, before returning to the fold when the enemy is exhausted. Using the technique like that will make you fatigued in a very short time, though. Not very suitable in a prolonged fight."
"But I'm afraid calm and hunting will not do. You may be sitting still when you hunt, but you are tense. Alert. Ready to pounce at any moment. No..." The monk shook his head. "You must be relaxed. Your guard must be down. Your thoughts serene. Thinking of nothing at all also counts, merely basking in the quiet silence."
"Look, I know you are enamored with the technique and are willing to brave its difficulty..." Nobutada continued. "But wasting time here might be detrimental, when you could be learning other things more suited to your style and personality."
(Sorry, but we'll need to wait for AzureKnight to post for this one.)

~~ TALES OF SHIZUYAMA ~~
A villager woman remarked to the taskforce member as the latter passed by.
"You better watch out if you're passing Yabo Forest, yokai. It's haunted by angry spirits... Dead samurai, eager to spill blood."
"People go into the woods and never come out. Varjan and Shizuyaman alike! The bodies that turn up have all been killed by Shizuyaman blades..."
A peasant man eating barbecued meat on a stick was startled when the taskforce member approached. It appeared he has news.
"Yokai! You have to tell Lord Takeshi, there is another samurai noble who survived Sanjo Beach. His name is Lord Tonchiki. He's in his abode southeast of here. If you go see him, I'm sure he would join your cause."
"Err, maybe not. I guess you'll need Lord Takeshi himself to convince him."
A villager sitting on some stone steps in the temple stood up when the taskforce member approached. "Yokai, I've heard of a small resistance group gathering in the Imahama Area. I believe they're headed by that shrine priestess that started a fight here not too long ago."
"They're recruiting farmers and fishermen to their cause. Brave, but it'll be dangerous if they're not trained."
~~ LEGENDARY TALES ~~
"Dealing with these students of the Heavenly Strike was more difficult than we thought. They have already thrown back two of the taskforce. However, the yokai fought them separately and at different times, so perhaps a more cooperative approach would be more fruitful."
Though Io's ploy did not lead to her being alone with Kazenosuke, the return trip was still pleasant enough (and not solely because Io had been called beautiful). Io was never one for nature paths, but it was preferable to running as she had done on the way to Kazenosuke's house. She would need to catalogue the various pieces of flora that she had never seen before on the walk, but that would come after the issue of the Varjan invasion was settled.
The topic of the invasion loomed over the group as they returned to Terauchi temple. Indeed, the invasion was difficult to avoid with the sights of Varjan ships and plumes of smoke. Io spoke up to respond to Kazenosuke, "Shizuyama has individuals of profound ability. I have been surprised by several of them... Including you." Io turned, giving the swordsman a faint smile from under her hood - which was quite an encouraging expression by her standards. "I will work to expand the chance of success." She paused for a moment. "Through any means possible. The other task force members would do the same." She gave a nod to Yuki.
Of course, she wasn't sure if Kazenosuke knew exactly what she was capable of as a lich. Given his pragmatic nature, it seemed like he may not have an issue with accepting the aid of a necromancer, but as she said, she had been surprised before.
Just when the wererabbit was about to leave, she froze on the spot.
For the door had just slid open, revealing Takeshi behind it.
Lunatea cursed silently. She was supposed to leave before he arrived, godsdammit!
"Uhh, welcome to Shizuyama, milady. Err, Ayu was taken aside to help with a small matter. She'll join us as soon as she can. " Takeshi sighed in front of you Lunatea. "I take it you two have acquainted with each other?"
"Yes, we have, albeit only for a short moment." She ended with a quick glare towards the woman.
The Nurarihyon then told them of the news from Lady Kyouko, saying that the Inari had a fleet awaiting to attack the Varjan blockade but needed a friendly port or the fleet will get worn down through attrition. She then said she would help the taskforce from the shadows as that was more her thing.
Hmph! From the shadows, huh? It suits her indeed!
Afterwards, she and Takeshi left. Unfortunately, before they knew it, they were alone together again.
"...You know, now that I thought about it." Takeshi started. "Had... everything been vastly different, I'd definitely consider getting together with you." He flashed her a goofy, yet genuine, smile.
Lunatea's face swiftly turned into a cold frown that was strangely accompanied by a blush. W-why must he bring that up out of the blue? Is he mocking me?!
"…You don't have to pity me. I can handle it just fine, you know." She returned, throwing her face away from his gaze. "I'll find another husband just fine. And one much better than you at that," she added with a certain venom in her words.
Kerry's eyes were zeroed in on Eula, completely focused even as Relica braved the whipping air currents and tried to get her to calm down.
"Ker, she didn't attack you. If she had, your head wouldn't be attached to your body anymore. She did this because of me, well, because I socked that baldie."
"Doesn't change the fact that she shot at me with my back turned, Rel. You know, more than anyone, how I feel 'bout that shit.", Kerry responded, her tone final and direct.
"C'mon, let's not do this. The only ones who gain by you beating her up, or she blowing you up, are the Varjans... And the locals, I 'spose. Let's go back to that temple. You and her can work things out there later, alright?"
For moment, Kerry said nothing as she continued to stare at Eula...before, for a brief second, her eyes turned to Relica. She took note of the effort the gremlin had to muster in order to withstand the raging winds. She, then, took a moment to view her surroundings. The villagers instantly took shelter in their homes as soon as the two mamono started arguing. Between Eula's arsenal and Kerry's magic, there wasn't a shadow of a doubt that the little village would be erased from the map in a potential fight.
So, with that in mind, Kerry made a desicion.
"You're right, Rel. Let's not do this..."
Seeing Kerry relax out of her combative stance and stashing Mort and Dusk on her back again, Relica and Eula, for a moment, believed the situation was finally cooling down...
".....not here."
It didn't.
Wind swirling around her foot, Kerry quickly kicked the ground, blowing forth a wall of leaves, dirt and pebbles toward the automaton. As this was happening, she then grabbed Relica by the scruff of her shirt.
"Don't open your mouth."
It was the only warning the gremlin would get as Kerry took to the skies. She then snapped her fingers toward a tree. A pop of air was heard before the bag of coins was launched high into the air, letting the hornet catch it in mid-air. With cargos in tow, she let the winds swirl around her before bursting forward, flying at breakneck speeds.
@PaulHaynek, @Rezod92, @The Irish Tree Relica let out a tired sigh. It seemed her old battle sister had finally come to her senses. That was good. Between the Automaton' and the hornet, there was enough firepower and magic to easily turn the hamlet into a smoking post-tornado disaster zone. She was just thankful tha--
"Fweh?" Kerry just grabbed her shirt.
She was told to keep her mouth shut.
Then she was airborne.
The prior request was not going to be fulfilled.
"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!"
Attempts at flailing proved quite fruitless, as her short legs couldn't really kick the hornet as she was being held like a grocery bag. Unfortunately, Kerry's decision to grab Relica by her shirt - which wasn't meant to be grabbed and used as leverage - caused the gremlin's rather plump torso-taters to eventually pop out of their usually restrained position.
So, now she was being hauled through the air by her old friend, with her melons free from the oppression of her garments, while screaming her lungs out as the pair zoomed towards whatever destination Kerry ad in mind.
Granted, she could've used her robotic octo-arms to restrain Kerry... But doing that, in mid-air, at this height... Well, let's just say that neither Relica's rotor-contraption nor her jump-boots would be enough to shoulder their combined weight and keep them from being pancaked on the ground below...
So for now all she could do was endure and-
"AAAAAAAAAAAAHHH!!!"
Later that very same AAAAAAHHH!, at the Temple.
Finally having landed and being freed from her sudden kidnapper. Relica was busy being on all fours, panting and breathing ungracefully and in a raspy, ragged manner. The gremlin eventually caught herself back to a reasonable state where she could muster the strength to get off the dirt and stand back up, still not aware that her blouse bunnies were free and joyfully showing off the everything and everyone around her. She was a bit too focused on Kerry at the moment to pay much attention to anything else.
"What the actual heck, Ker." Relica said, a scowl and anger in her eyes. "You still gonna fight her? I know you're pissed, I am too y'know!, but what're you gonna get outta beating her up, huh? Satisfaction that yoo pounded a cripple into the ground? And what the hell's the deal with that coin pouch, where'd you even get it!?" Relica's first statement was more a sincere inquiry, while the latter was a less sicnere one. It didn't take a genius-level intellect to figure out where a purse of coins, that the hornet hadn't had on her before, had suddenly come from.
After waiting and, probably, listening to Kerry's response. The gremlin sighed and rubbed her tmeple.
"Fine, whatever... I'm gonna go get things ready to repair Eula once she gets back... I'll probably need to use more stuff than I'd planned since you're gonna be like this. Awesome, just what I nee- Hey, is it breezy here, ya think?"
Relica looked around. Then looked down.
Boing~
Hello~!
... ... ...
"CURRY YOU IDIOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT!!"
A tomato-headed gremlin than ran off with remarkable speed from the hornet's side, shielding her bosom from the harsh and probably not lecherous stares of others, as she dashed to her sanctuary for protection. Well, her workbench. Same thing, really. Seemed she'd need to fix more than just Eula's arm.
Moments later, at her wortkstation
Muttering an untold amount of curses under her breaht, Relica was going through her sack o' knacks to get set up for her eventual patient. She'd managed to fix the shirt-situation, so that was good at least, but her mind was a bit more focused on the apparent scuffle between her buddy and the automaton-girl. She would've liked to talk Kerry out of it, but knowing the hornet, there really wasn't going to be a way to do that. She'd always been head-strong and stubborn like that, even back then... Which was probably why they'd been at each others throats so often back when they first met.
Hopefully, the mercenary could reel it in a little better these days, and wouldn't go too far. The thought of adding injuries and damage onto the already battered Automaton casued a twinge of pain in Relica's chest. Honestly. She'd explained all of this to Kerry back in the days... But that stubborn muscle-head was so damn stubborn, she probably even forgot.
Having a voice inside your head that told you what t do, no matter what you wanted yourself... Being a golem or automaton was a hard life... Being created with free will, with emotions and with wants and desires of your own, but rarely if ever getting the opportunity to act on or express them... it was just unfair. Relica scowled again and angrily slammed her gloved hand onto the workbench's surface.
Which only served to hurt her hand and cause her to comedically grab it and swear a lot. Loudly.
Once the pain had subsided and she was relatively calm again, she gave her position a bit of thought. It was very likely that the mother and brat from that village were going to spread accusations about herself and kerry, and the other villagers weren't likely gonna do them any favors on that front. The monk might be willing to look the other way, givne how much of a softie he'd seemed to be, but she wouldn't put it past the guy to throw them under the carriage after this. She sighed deeply. If it came down to it, she'd just have to suck it up and shoulder the blame for this herself, hopefully, as the latest addition to the Taskforce and a relative unknown, the locals could just peg her as a volatile and untrustworthy monster, rather than having the whole group's efforts up until now undermined.
But that was a best case scenario, and if wars had taught the gremlin anyhting, it was that the best scare scenario rarely ever happened. Especially when monster-hating humans were involved.
With a bunch of parts, bits and bobs now assorted and laid out on her workbench, all the gremlin could do was sit and wait. Well, not entirely true. She remembered the scuffle with the Varjan patrol and quickly unlinked her damaged drone. At least she could tinker and fix this up while she had nothing else to do.
Alice's expression stiffened; she'd been assumed, accosted, accused, and now actively patronized by this pompous, presumptuous, peasant man-child in armor painted up like a rainbow!
For the first time in a long time: she was done being diplomatic.
"I don't have to take this," Alice says, raising her right hand.
Carroll went for a swing at Whimsy - her unestablished, yet eternal rival - before catching nothing but air, as her body was yanked, and she snapped into Alice's grip.
"If you won't afford me passage to Hama Island, so shall I take myself there under my own steam..." Alice says, as Carroll groaned underneath the sudden exertion of pressure.
Unable to speak, Carroll felt Alice... no, she could feel what was underneath Alice... breaking her hold, more and more, as they debonded. Taken to task, Alice spread her roots over Carroll, and absorbed the Cursed Sword in reverse.
Her legs were coated in slime from her waistline to her toes, and to spread out even further behind her - doubling her leg length, as the slime fused them together into a long, thicc tail, covered in serpentine scales. Above her waistline, an explosion of mycelium growth spread across her nude form, and fashioned into dominatrix attire, as the mycelium thickened and colored black, and bound together by thicker roots.
Her face reshaped, as it melded with the one that Carroll had stolen off Shizuka, and red washed over her blonde hair, before she flexed her arms, and ran her fingers through the long tresses.
"Now," Alice sighed, with a hiss, "I can just swim to the island..."
There was a solid ten seconds or so where both Whimsy and Liliana were utterly lost as to what had happened, before Liliana flew over to Alice and papped her tail. ”Lady Alice, I thought you were a mushroom queen, not a snake! How’d you do that?” she asked, while Whimsy sailed back to her side and clung to her back in its usual position.
Entrusting the care of Kazennosuke to the others, Shizuka followed the signatures of demonic energy he sensed nearby. In addition to Alice and Carroll, he also sensed Liliana and her magic at work. By the feel of it, Carroll and Liliana’s…weapon(?) were fighting. If memory serves, the name of her blade was Whimsy. He sighed mentally, for whatever reason it seemed the members of the taskforce were always getting into disputes of some kind. He sensed the chi of another human present as well, that one was with Alice. It appeared he was going to stumble upon quite the scene when he arrived, but braced himself nonetheless. He thought of giving them another lecture, but most of the members never listened to him anyway. His existence as this team’s captain was becoming rather depressing.
Bracing himself as he did, nothing would have prepared him for the sight he stumbled upon.
Arriving at the shore, he indeed saw Alice along with Liliana, the former arguing with some knight wearing flamboyant rainbow-colored armor. However, off to the side their respective weapons appeared to be fighting. The sight of Whimsy clashing with her opponent was an odd one, since it was a wooden sword wielding itself. It was like she was being wielded by a spector. But the form that Carroll had assumed rattled Shizuka to his very core. The swordsman stopped dead in his tracks and anyone close enough to see his face would be disbursed by the expression on his face.
As if affected by a delirious sense of shock, Shizuka stood motionless as he took in Carroll’s new form. She had taken the appearance of a painfully familiar lamia, complete with crimson hair and a white kimono with purple lining. ”Th-This cannot be!” he uttered. Not a moment after, the phased in front of Whimsy, stopping her attack on the lamia. ”Enough.” He coldly said. He then turned to Carroll, still wrecked with disbelief. He knew it was Carroll, the signature was unmistakable. But, her appearance couldn’t be denied.
”You.” He continued. ”Why, why do you look like her?! Like…Yurika?” The cold solemess had almost left his voice, replaced by that of an almost broken man…
There was no hope of getting an answer, as Carroll was sheathed by Alice's power, and the answer was snatched away with her.
Sensing that this was going to be crazy awkward, Liliana would shrink down and slink back a little. ”Oh, uh, hi Shizuka! Fancy seeing you here.”
Alice looked to the distance; Hama Island was due across the way. She'd plenty of strength to get there. Her focus was so sharp and tunneled, she didn't even notice Shizuka nor his distress.
Hell, she'd forgotten Liliana was even there, as she slithered for the pier's end.
Shizuka watched as Alice recalled Carroll to her side and began to merge with her, taking on a new form. She still kept her overall lamia appearance, but her clothes changed to something more…risque and questionable. Perhaps not so much for a mamono. Her hair retained its crimson color, but the style changed and she wore it completely down. She paid no mind to Shizuka, or anyone else for that matter as she slithered toward the pier. She apparently had her sights set on going off to that island in the distance. Noticing Liliana address him, he turned to her, being snapped out of his stupor for a moment.
”Liliana-chan.” He said. ”What…exactly is going on here?”
Of all people to ask, Liliana might have been the absolute worst pick for an explanation. ”Uhhhhhhhhhhh…” Liliana started searching for an answer. ”Its…a-a Wonderland fashion statement! Yup!” Liliana said, clearly in a cold sweat. She had no idea. But, she would fly over to float just before Alice, saying: ”Hey wait, Lady Alice, Shizuka is talking to you. It’d be rude to just walk away…”
Alice narrowed her eyes; a discontented hiss escaping her, as Liliana brought her to pause. For a moment, she was tempted to swat her, and her tail made aims to do so, as her temptation turned to follow-through without much thought.
It was as simple as a flick of a tailbone and Liliana was sent flying across the pier, letting out a sound not unlike a kicked puppy.
"Hrm!?" Alice straighted up, and looked around, seeing Liliana flying across the pier at speed, but her was better, as she swooshed across the wood, and caught her.
The fairy was unconscious, wings lying still as she laid in the palms of Alice’s hands.
"Liliana!" Alice shouted, laying her down, before applying pressure to get chest - tooling back her monstrous strength to get some utterly powdering Liliana's functionally paper mache bones - and pinching her nose to breathe into her.
”A Wonderland fashion statement…?” Shizuka honestly didn’t know what he was expecting. He looked at his fae companion with a blank expression, wondering what to make of her answer. It was obvious that she just made it up on the spot, and at this point he should’ve been used to it. She then zipped away to fetch Alice, who had ignored them up until that point. Alice, not wanting to have anything to do with her or anyone else, swatting her away with her large tail. ”Liliana-chan!”
Alice then, having a change of heart, caught the little sprite in her hands before she was sent crashing into a tree. Seeming to feel a sudden spout of remorse, Alice attempted to resuscitate the unconscious fairy. Shizuka stared at the pair for a moment, still trying to process the lingering emotions that built up from earlier. Walking closer to Alice, she still looked like that person in the face - and it was still bothering him a bit.
”Gods, you certainly didn’t hold back, did you?” Said the swordsman, standing over the pair. He knelt down beside her and placed a couple of fingers on the side of Liliana’s neck. ”Thankfully, she doesn’t appear to be seriously injured, she should wake up just fine in a while.”
He then got back to his feet, and looked off to the island in the distance. ”What’s the rush with getting to that island? Off on another request? I could go with you, perhaps we can talked about earlier while on the way.”
In the process of receiving CPR, Liliana would slowly open her eyes after the chest compressions, then immediately shrieked as Alice’s face pressed its lips against her. She was, like, the size of a flower, so she genuinely thought she was getting eaten by the new Queen Lamia. As such, Liliana passed out AGAIN, white as a sheet with Shizuka able to literally see her chi leaving her body.
Liliana spooked Alice into standing up, so she didn't notice Liliana passing back out, before she took in Shizuka's question. "Yes," she answered, before explaining the quest that Carroll had picked up, "Now, what do you want to talk about?”
”Why don’t we start with your appearance.” Shizuka began. ”You certainly didn’t show this ability during training.”
The swordsman, now in somewhat better control of himself, tried to keep his composure whilst questioning his queenly companion. Her face made it quite difficult, however.
”Your face, it…it looks like hers…” His eyes waved, past emotions that the man tried his best to put into the background swirled wildly within his psyche. ”Was it during our temporary union? Di-did you peer into my memories?”
"Madness Assimilation," Alice says, "My trump card, so to speak. The natural ability to Assimilate things," she says, "However, being brilliant as Mad Hatter are, we can borrow things more definable - shape, form, power..."
"I didn't look into anything in your past, though, darling," Alice says, caressing his cheek, tickling his skin with her soft fingers, "But, I can, if you like..."
In truth, Alice was forcing Carroll’s [Possession Slime] to work in her favour - but, Shizuka didn’t need to know that. After all, trickery was her bread and butter.
”Trump card?” Shizuka said, seemingly more confused than before due to her answer. From what Shizuka could tell, it was some sort of psychological warfare. Why else would she be taking on the likeness of his dead lover?
She seemed to be making good use of it too, stroking his face with her delicate fingers, much like she did.
”You still haven't answered my question.” He replied stoutly, grabbing her wrist, preventing further caressing. ”If you possess such an ability, why use it to take on this form specifically?”
The man's anger was starting to boil, feeling as though his mind and heart were being toyed with.
Alice tilted her head. "You aren’t making sense," she says, "All I did was steal Carroll’s power to manifest a physical form that is more adapted for swimming..." Alice frowned, her fingers lingering, "You would fault me for using my sword?" As she spoke, she leaned in, and asked: "Or, would you rather use your sword on me?"
That... was Carroll.
It seemed the Mushroom woman had no regard, or rather understanding, the amount of shellshock that came with Shizuka speaking with a woman who looked just like his former love. It was made worse when he heard a familiar voice, her voice. ”You dare?!” He snapped, losing his composure. His sword was instantly pressed at her throat, his eyes now looking completely different. Not really human anymore, but now distinctly reptilian, much like they did back then.
”No more of this. How you use your weapon is of no consequence to me, within reason. However, you will not toy with me! Either that, or you’re simply oblivious to what you’re doing. In which case, perhaps I should educate you on the dangers of fiddling with a slayer’s heart.”
Alice would easily sense that the chi stirring within Shizuka is the stark opposite of what she’s felt from him up until this point. No longer a gentle wave, who’s violent ebb came and went as soon as a transient breeze. Now, it was wild, like a vicious storm with crackling lightning and thunder that shook the earth. It may feel as though she’s talking to an entirely different person.
Alice grinned - no...
...she beamed.
An uncharacteristic violence shone in her expression, as if... something was itching to be free and rampage. She didn’t seem concerned with the blade at all, as she swished her tail. "Dangerous," she hissed. "Cut me..."
Not even a moment after Alice uttered her dare, she would find herself blown back in the direction opposite the shoreline, nearly back at the edge of the wooded area. As she attempted to get up and dust the foliage off of her, she would feel the bludgeoning sting of a scabbard on her stomach and find herself pinned against a tree.
”Is everything a godsdamn game to you?” He snapped. ”Only a fool treads on thin ice with such glee. I can’t tell if this is some act of irksome hedonism or if this is just the way you are. I don’t really care either way, but have enough sense to show some damned self-awareness. ”
Alice and Carroll would begin to feel an uncomfortable frost along with the scabbard pressed against their flesh.
"Nnnn...!" Alice cried out, as she slammed into the ground, and bounced into a tree - assisted by the tidal wave of rime that washed free of Shizuka. For a moment, she seemed to be in a state of struggle...
...only to smirk.
"Rainbow."
Shards of ice erupted from her skin; a veritable pincushion of frost struck against the foreign frost.
"Eruption."
Gouts of flame erupted from the earth; torn free of the prison by the slams of powerful tail.
"Zephyr."
Blades of wind whipped into a frenzy; pulling flame and frost into a scalding whirlwind.
"Shatter."
Plates of stone rose and fell upon the whirlwind; imprisoning her target,
"Heavenly Strike."
Alice aligned her tail with Shizuka, but her aim was not true - vines of slime adhered her to the tree he’d beaten her against, and the blade of lightning sheared open the side of the elemental prison, allowing Shizuka to escape.
"No! I am not finished!" Alice shouted, as the vines grappled her tail.
"Shizuka! Help me!" Carroll shouted.
Shizuka seemed to dismiss the whirlwind of flame and frost as negligible, not flinching even at the stone prison Alice made in an attempt to trap him. He already noticed the opening in the stone that would allow him to escape.
”Attempting that technique again, are we?” He said, almost mockingly. ”You’ve no experience using it with an actual sword, let alone a makeshift tail. ” He instantly phased out of the opening in the stone and Alice’s attack hit only an unfortunate tree, splitting it in half. The large chunk of wood fell on the forest floor with a thunderous thud.
”Don’t fret, queen.” He said, noticing how Alice seemed stuck to the tree he pinned her to. ”Your attack wouldn’t have hit its mark regardless.”
However, upon hearing a plea for help in her voice, it stirred the swordsman further. ”H-How dare you say that to me!” He said, clearly starting to break down again. ”Again, you use her voice. Apparently my words mean absolutely nothing to you.” He said in a more sinister tone. Small sparks of fire, rhime, and stone fell onto the ground around Shizuka as he grimaced toward the Mamono.
”That’s fine. I have to remember that you guys are pretty stubborn. That’s just fine.” His tone whiplashed from menacing to a strange calm. He walked over to Alice/Carroll as he spoke. Oddly, he seemed to adhere to Carroll’s pleas, and peeled her slime parts off of the tree. He then placed a hand on Alice’s stomach, was he caressing the wound he inflicted from earlier?
”Hyourangeki.”
It seemed not, as Alice would be plagued by a stinging cold again, along with being blown back by a large ball of permafrost. Stumbling backwards, by the time she was able to look up, she would see Shizuka had hopped his way into the air. He was visibly channeling a strong electric current with his index and middle finger, his eyes wild with rage.
”Let the indignation of the Azure Dragon be the one to teach you the lesson! Kaminari! ”
If Alice didn’t do something, she would fall victim to a severe lightning bolt…
A bolt of lightning that would nearly split Alice cleanly in twain.- allowing for a violent flourish of mycelium and mushrooms and assorted fungi to explode forth from the lightning strike wound; a deep, burning cut that cleaved the length of her crown to sternum, and peeled back her face and chest.
As Shizuka landed, he'd see Carroll on the ground, and feel the hateful Demon Energy of something inside the heavily damaged Alice.
He could feel its animosity, as it peered at him through one bloodshot eye from within a shell, as brain, ribs, and abdominal organs grew due to the cancerous, fungal growths.
"Nnn..." Carroll reached out for "Alice" - spreading her parasitic slime to try and reach her.
It would become obvious to the samurai, Carroll wasn't antagonizing him... she was begging to be saved by him.
"Wonderful! Wonderful! Wonderful!" Alice says, voice coming from much deeper within. "Madness! Madness! Madness!" she threw her head to the side, spores gushing out of her, "Cursed Sword... Cursed Sword... O', frabjous day... It's time to slay!"
Alice was suddenly over Carroll, foot raised above her, "OFF WITH YOUR HEAD!!!"
Shizuka’s eyes widened as he saw what his attack had unveiled. He wondered if that plant husk that vaguely resembled a woman was what Alice really looked like. He didn’t focus on it for too long, as he noticed Carroll off to the side, now fully resembling that woman. She laid helplessly on the ground, appearing to truly need assistance. If this was an act, it was certainly an impressive one. He knew of Alice’s trickery, and the only reason it worked the first time was because Shizuka purposefully walked into the trap.
Alice seemed to be taking the act too far, however, as she was about to stomp the cursed sword into oblivion. Without thinking, Shizuka acted on instinct alone.
”Stay the hell away from her!!” He exclaimed, having already snatched Carroll out of harm’s way. Putting her down for a moment, he drew his sword again and channeled a powerful wind around it.
”Uryubutosen: Toppu.” Shizuka let loose a barrage of countless slashes that were accompanied by a maelstrom that would hopefully injure and knockback Alice enough to where the fight would end.
" Curious, Curiouser, Curiousest..." Alice says, as the blades past by; slicing and dicing, lashing and slashing, but not bothering her, as she walked forward in the storm - thick roots keeping her steady and firm. "You won't imprison me again! I won't go back into the darkness! You can't make me!" she screamed, "But, I can break you. I can! I can! I will!"
Alice didn't cease to move, however, she was slowing down. As she stood before Shizuka, her movement was down to zero, and she seemed to stop functioning.
"Hurts..." Carroll says, removing her hand from Shizuka's sword hand - bit of parasitic slime dripping off his blade. Reattaching her facsimile of an appendage, she placed her hand against Alice's broken face, and spread across her skin.
Shizuka could sense a nightmarish torrent of hatred disappearing behind a pleasant wall of... well, Alice.
"Nnnn..." Alice groaned, as she rubbed her temple, "Ooowww... My head aches..." she groaned. " What happened here? Last thing I remember is... ... ... ...where'd that asshole knight go!? I wanted to give him a piece of my mind! Pissed me off so bad! Talking to me however he pleases!"
Carroll dropped to the ground; falling into her weapon state, and silent.
All the slashes had behind them was wind, so it did little to slow down the plant woman who continued to walk forward in spite of Shizuka’s attack. She then started to utter things that didn’t make sense to the swordsman, she might as well have been speaking gibberish. Suddenly, Alice’s pace began to slow, until eventually she stopped completely. Did Shizuka’s attack have an effect on her after all?
Whatever was the case, Carroll slipped away from Shizuka and went back to Alice. She spread across Alice’s broken body, repairing all of the damage that had been done and restoring her to her original appearance. Alice, now restored, didn’t seem to remember the rage-filled clash they just had, and was instead complaining about that strange rainbow-colored knight from earlier. Carroll, apparently drained of all her strength, laid bare on the ground. Unable to sustain her manifested form, she reverted back to the appearance of her axe form.
Shizuka honestly didn’t know who to process the scene that just played out. He closed his eyes and sighed, he then promptly punched himself in the forehead. While his forehead was now bloody, his eyes had returned to normal upon reopening. As for Alice, he really didn't see any point in being mad anymore. After all, he could see now that Alice didn’t really do anything wrong, as she pointed out earlier. In fact, the swordsman felt a bit of shame, and it was a boon that she didn’t remember what had just happened.
”I imagine that the knight is still at the beach” He replied in a gentle, but tired tone. ”He might still be there if you look.”
Leaving Alice to her devices, he walked over to Carroll, and picked her up. ”Carroll, I think I understand now.” He said. ”I won’t ask you to forgive me, as I don’t deserve it. But, I hope that you don’t take offense to dining on my chi in order to restore your strength.” Holding her should be enough for her to do that, he thought.
”Though, I would still like to talk about a couple of things once you wake up…”
He might get his desire sooner, rather than later, as Carroll shifted and gained consciousness in his air; though, she maintained her form as an axe.
It seemed to work, Carroll roused and was regaining consciousness. Carroll had maintained her cursed axe form, however, as opposed to the…other one.
”Good, you’re awake.” He said. ”Now that you are, I wanted to apologize again for earlier. I…” He trailed off for a moment, soberness enveloped his face. ”That previous form you had of that lamia woman, it…she was someone from my past. Someone who is a reminder of my greatest tragedy, and sin.” He grimaced, still trying to cope with the shock.
”But, that doesn’t excuse my actions. I attacked a comrade, which is something that shouldn’t be overlooked. You’re within your right to hold it against me, but know that I swear to you that I won’t ever do it again. But, if you don’t mind me asking, what was Alice referring to earlier?”
Carroll didn't seem to answer for the longest, before she avoided the question, entirely, by asking: "Is that why I couldn't see anything but her? No mother? No aunts? No sisters? No friends? Not even a grandmother. Just this woman, so deeply entrenched in your mind. Of all the forms I could pull from..."
”I’m afraid that I grew up without having any of those in my life.” The swordsman replied. ”Although, I did have some friends of course. They come and go, as you’d expect. Sometimes on good teams, sometimes bad. But, it’s nice to know that you were prying into my inner thoughts during our previous union…”
He then looked at Alice, who started making off for the beach, likely back to the rainbow knight and Liliana. ”You still haven't answered my previous question.” He said. ”Does Alice resent you for some reason? What happened between the two of you?”
"You act as if that's something I can control! As if, I wanted to!" Carroll shouted, "Don't pretend like you understand my existence, Shizuka! Being what I am, at the whim and will of vapid women, easily broken Alices, and -- " Silence, sudden and deafening. Carroll, metaphorically, bit her tongue, before she turned away, as best a weapon could. "The past is the past. What right do you have to ask me mine, yet hide yours? If you want answers, you have to give them, too. Tit for Tat, the oldest bargain."
At some very dramatic point in the EPIC Shizuka vs Alice/Carroll clash, Liliana had absolutely gotten blown away due to being unconscious, tiny, weighing as much as a leaf, and also comedic effect. Having gotten tangled up in some twigs above the epic duel, Liliana had bore witness to pretty much every word and blow shared.
…This…seemed like something she was bad at.
Rosebud would be better at this. Mostly because Rosebud was better at everything, but also because she was a mature lady.
But eventually, the fairy would untangle herself and sit atop a branch, quiet as she observed the two. Probably the quietest Liliana had been since arriving as she let the two discuss their worries and remained quiet. She had a feeling if she interrupted now, the two would never talk fully. A knight knew at least a tiny bit about chivalry…and right now, an eavesdropper wasn’t what was needed. So Liliana would quietly take flight and leave, letting their words remain only to each other, and instead returning to the Rainbow Knight’s pier to await her potential companions.
Taking a seat at the pier, Liliana would dip her legs in the water and let out a lighthearted sigh. "...Maybe…Rosebud would say I did a good job."
"As my First Bladeflower, you did amazingly good at whatever you did," Alice says, looming over her; eyes glowing crimson in the shade of her hair, as she bent over.
Alice beamed, and stood up."What did you do," she asks, "Be extra cute, as usual?"
"Nope!" Liliana said, proudly crossing her arms over her chest and closing her eyes. "I minded my own business."
"Well, good on you," Alice says, picking her up, as she plopped down on her spacious rear, and looked out to Hama Island. Holding Liliana like a teddy bear, the Mushroom Queen sighed, "I feel... different... Do i seem different?"
"I’m not sure," Liliana said, before getting a good look at Alice since her eyes had been closed for dramatic effect. "Did you do something new with your hair?"
"Hmmm.... no, same as it's always been," Alice says, unaware of the fact that her new body was much closer to what lie underneath.
Liliana tilted her head. "...You sure?"
Alice nodded. "I'm feeling grand," she says, before poking Liliana in her belly, tickling her, "Silly, little fairy~"
Liliana curled up, using size trick to not get super tickled from one finger. "Won’t work! Fairies are IMMUNE to tickles! Its part of training."
Alice smirked, making little vines to tickle her underarms, belly, neck, and soles. Liliana's immunity would be challenged.
Liliana stood smug and proud as she was completely immune to the tickling at hand, before wiggling her fingers. "Wah! Hah! Hah! I’m invincible, Lady Alice! Now prepare for a counter attack!" she said before shrinking down and going for the sides.
Alice chuckled, but not from the attack. She didn't have a nervous system to feel with; reactions to pain were subconscious remnants of her Humanity - long lost to the mushrooms within.
As a result, she could focus on shifting Liliana around, and squeezing her arms together - squishing Fairy between big ol' tiddy.
"Gotcha," she smirked, as she looked into her cleavage, and stuck her tongue out at the Faekin.
Thoroughly stuck, Liliana would try to wriggle free.
She would have to escape the impossible: pudding tits.
Shizuka stared blankly at Carroll for a few minutes, not because he had no intention of answering her question but rather because he wasn’t sure if he had the stomach to. ”Carroll, I -” He started, cutting himself off for a moment. ”I imagine you want me to start with the woman who you took the likeness of, based on my memories.” Holding back his begrudging emotions, he swallowed the decade long pill of bitterness he had been holding all this time.
”Her name was Yurika. You obviously know who she was to me, based on the emotions you felt. Along with my unacceptable outburst. It was sometime ago that I participated in a war on the Zipangu mainland. My campaign was one of blood, hypocrisy, and self-righteous indignation. In it all, that woman, Yurika, was my light. With her, perhaps all of the bloodshed wouldn't have been for nothing. Yet…” He brought Carroll eye level. ”In spite of my so-called skill and conviction, I couldn’t protect her when it mattered most.”
Carroll was silent for the longest, before a hand formed from her haft, and held his, as slime purged from the weapon, and shaped like a lattice into shape, before being given form and purpose. "We aren't so different, I see..." she says, letting his hand go, "I've been waging the same, fruitless war for 199 years with Alice... though, I have done so for much longer before her; taking and breaking weak-willed, weak-minded Mamono in an effort to kill the woman that birthed me, loved me, and then discarded me once I became a boring and ugly toy..." Carroll hugged herself, teeth gritted, before she continued, "That... woman... is nothing more than a construction of my power, a shell... a cage... a puppet, put to task until she breaks."
Carroll hissed, sucking her teeth, "She was so weak when I caged her. But, she's learned... grown to anger... grown to rage... Next time, she won't hesitate to shatter me, and I'll deserve it for what I've done to her for going on two centuries..."
”I fear that your story is a bit more…eccentric than mine.” Shizuka said in a more light-hearted tone. His mood seemed to have oddly improved as he spoke to her. ”However, in both our cases, it seemed that rage and seeking self-serving justice has ultimately done neither of us any good. You’ve used people, eventually leading to their end. However I’m in no position to judge you for it.”
Shizuka made no reprehension as Carroll formed a hand and placed it on his, if anything he seemed to be welcoming it. ”I’ve killed many people during that time. Many of them weren’t even warriors, simply civilians. Civilians who held important political positions, but all the same they were individuals who could do little to defend themselves against me. All in the name of a revolution that I fooled myself into thinking that I understood.”
He then turned back in the direction of Alice. ”But, you say Alice will want retribution for what you’ve done to her. Well, I suppose she’s within her right to feel that way. However, we’re both testaments to the fact that there is no salvation in revenge. Only emptiness, or at worse, more suffering.” He tightened his grip on Carroll’s hand. ”As I said, infighting among taskforce members is not allowed. I myself have failed at this, and I will take full responsibility for that. However, that’s all the more reason why I won’t allow it. You’ve my word that no further harm will come to you.”
He then looked away for a moment, not forgetting that he had his sword pointed at her throat but a moment earlier. ”You’re well within reason to deny my aid. After what just happened, there’s no reason for you to trust me anymore…”
"I struggle... not to..." Carroll says. "Having touched you... felt you... I changed..." she says. "It is my nature; irrefutable, that I would feel trust in my husband."
”H-Husband?!” He nearly choked on his own saliva when he heard those words coming out of her mouth. It shouldn’t be a surprise, unlike the natives, most knew what happens when a human male and a mamono share an intimate moment. He couldn’t help it, though. Talking with her felt like the most natural thing in the world. For the first time in years, he took no issue with relaxing around her, expressing his past and grievances.
Making an uncharacteristic blush, the swordsman suddenly lost the gall to look Carroll in the eyes. ”U-Uh, you know, they say that people shouldn’t rush into these types of things, haha…”
"I told you, I can’t help it," Carroll says, "A Cursed Sword seeks a strong husband, a man worth his sword arm," she says, "If I could defy my nature, I would not burden you like this. A broken blade like me is no good to you."
”Well, as I mentioned before, you can feel free to dine on my energy to restore your strength and repair your body as needed.” Carroll would feel any barrier or resistance Shizuka put upon his chi had significantly lifted. This would thus allow for optimal chi absorption, which would hopefully improve Carroll’s condition. Due to the swordsman’s strength, perhaps it would not only heal here, but increase her strength by at least a few spades.
"I'm still wearing her face, though," Carroll says, "That's cruel to you and your memories."
”In a vacuum, that would be true. However, it's just an ability you have that you didn't ask for, and it wouldn't be right for me to hold it against you.” He said, trying to ease her apprehension.
”You know, even now I still haven't really gotten over her death. Instead, I've let it lead my life up until now. I've tried to tell myself that if I save enough lives, the gods may take pity on me and allow me to be by her side again when my time comes.” He gently caressed Carroll's cheek as he spoke. ”Instead of serving the political interests of disgruntled and power hungry men, I would wield my blade to defend the peace of civil affairs. Perhaps then, I could find some value in my blood-drenched life. Perhaps, you having her face serves as a reminder that she will always be with me, along with the time we spent together. If seeing her face causes me pain, it just means that something in me needs to be addressed.”
Shizuka brought Carroll in close for a small embrace, but did nothing at first. He wanted the choice to be hers, so he would allow her to begin when she was willing and ready.
"This face is not a permanent affair. It will change... for better and for worse..." Carroll says, "But, if it can bring you peace... " Carroll pecked his cheek, stealing bits of energy with her lips, "Well, at least, I can manage that much with countdown on my head."
It had been some time ago since the ronin had felt the romantic touch of another, not since Yurika in fact. He had nearly forgotten how it felt, having pushed all of those past feelings into the background. Lightly chuckling, he gently pulled his cheek back from Carroll for a moment.
”Carroll.” He whispered, ”You won't be able to fill up on energy like that.”
He then quickly brought her in, planting his lips on hers. Now having her locked, he meant for her to indulge herself a little more than with some tiny sips.
Shocked, for the first time in shy of a half-millennial, Carroll took the hint in earnest, and slipped her arms around him, as her tail coiled around his legs - since he was allowing her to be wrapped around his body. Gazing at him, face-to-face, the Cursed Sword smirks, "Itadakimasu~"
Shikuza would be treated to the fullness of her lips, as they pressed to his; the forked shaped of her tongue, as it invaded his mouth; the swell of her breasts against his chest, as the bared tops pressed to his exposed chest; and, the gentle squeeze of her tail, as it held him in place.
She'd take plenty of the meal offered.
Shizuka's heart was now racing with passion, those buried feelings now burning in earnest, visions of past memories flooding his mind. As he felt Carroll's coils lock him in, his embrace tightened to match. At that moment, the burning urge overtook him.
Carroll would find herself thrust onto the ground, and as her tongue invaded his mouth, she would feel something else invade her.
Carroll gasped, perplexed and stunned, almost into helplessness, as she hissed, and her coil grew slightly lax. Her one-sided meal had become a dinner for two, so it seemed.
And, she'd zero argument to offer.
The swordsman had the lamia-styled weapon pinned down in missionary as he continued his thrusting - his body heat risem, breathing heavy, Carroll would feel his sweat drip over her as he laid into her. As their bare chests embraced, they could feel their hearts racing with great fervor. If Carroll was one of the ones to believe in the stereotype that Zipangunese men were lacking in the length of their member, she would be pleasantly surprised by what the ronin was packing. Their love-making became more and more forceful, as if competing for dominance. Their bodies were soon covered in dirt and leaves, large streaks left in the mud as they tossed and turned.
Their moaning became quite loud as well, echoing throughout the surrounding trees. Not that it mattered to them, as far as they were aware, the world came to a complete halt.
Born of Wonderland, Carroll had no interaction with men of the Material Realm, so she called it; as such, she had no judgment to cast. However, she had a high opinion to give, as Shizuka took more and more of her; finding any dull edges in her blade and sharpening them, while sanding any nicks out of her haft, so to speak.
A wild surge of raw magic would announce her climax of the evening, before she splayed out beneath the samurai at the mercy of his inner dragon.
At the height of his rapid strokes, Shizuka was holding Carroll’s left hand with his right and his other was holding Carroll’s hip. He could tell that her power was increasing to impressive degrees thanks to their session. Carroll had finally climaxed, unleashing a torrent of magical energy along with other bodily fluids. He did as well, looking up at the sky for several minutes afterwards. Drenched in Carroll’s, as well as his own, sweat, his breathing was labored as he soaked in the atmosphere; still inside Carroll.
After a little while, he looked down at her eye-to-eye.
”You…feeling any better?”
"Right as rain," Carroll says, before chirping, "darling~!" and giving Shizuka a quirky, cute smile.
For a moment, Carroll was hesitant to feel like she did, but, no-one would know, no damage would be done; her scent would long wash off Shizuka by time they returned home, and their dalliance would be a fond memory.
That was the right way of things.
She was sure of that much. It would be foolish to think she'd make it beyond this moment.
”It’s my pleasure to be of help.” He said. With a grunt he got up. ”Do you need to rest a moment?” He looked over toward the direction of the pier again. ”I’d say normally the shore would be a good place to wash up, but perhaps we should find a spring or river along the way back to the temple.” He looked himself over for a moment, making a grim face at the amount of dirt and foliage that was now stuck to his clothes. ”Once again, my favorite haori suffers…”
With a sigh, he casts a bit of water magic that swirls around him for a little bit, washing away the grime and broken leaves. While it was now a bit cleaner, it was now dripping wet. He elected to simply take it off and wear it over his shoulder. With his black robe top now visible, the tone contours of his frames were now on display. Despite his slender body, Shizuka was surprisingly cut, though if one took into account his trade it would be par for the course.
”Before coming here, I went on a mission with Io-san and Yuki-chan, and we had recruited Kazennosuke to our cause. He’s a powerful swordsman and another ally of Takeshi-dono. He’ll no doubt be a great help.”
Picking his shikomizue up, he placed it by his side, then walked back over to Carroll. ”But, enough about that. Let’s head back, shall we?” He then blushed for a moment, nervously scratching his cheek. ”Also, uh, wanted to say…thank you. I…much enjoyed our little…moment.”
"Don’t we still have an entire mission to accomplish, though," Carroll asks, "That whole swordsman on the beach thing?" Carroll rose up, sitting on her coiled tail, as she fixed her kimono; giving Shizuka a little show, before she stowed the goods away. "As for rest, I don’t get exhausted. I just mimic whatever the form I’m in should do. I can go eternally, however," she says, smirking. "In all manner of sword fighting."
Carroll pulled her obi tight, and looked to the shoreline, and the dock as a whole. "You don’t have to thank me," she says. "This was a welcomed dalliance. Perspective." Carroll’s expression was somber, speaking volumes in-between her spoken words. "Wonderful, I’d say. You’ll make a fine husband one day," she says, before setting off. "...hm."
Whatever Carroll intended to say, she left to die on her lips, as she made her way back to the docks. It had been an eventful day, to say the least, but she needed to be realistic. Shizuka was not hers, he had far more sensible prospects back at Terauchi Temple.
A doddering crone like Io.
A flighty disaster like Lunatea.
Even a hotheated wind-bag like Kerry.
At least, they had more to offer; sense and security.
A man like Shizuka didn’t need a second sword.
”Ah, yes.” He responded to Carroll reminding him of why she and Alice came out here in the first place. He chuckled a bit as the weapon brought attention to her assets. Telling him that he’d make a fine husband, she slithered away back to the pier and her host. It seemed her strength had been restored to the point where Alice was once again bound to her will.
Shizuka stood there, pondering on various thoughts that whirled around in his head. He never once thought that he'd end up copulating with a weapon of all things, one that took the form of his dead lover. It was, of course, more nuanced than that. A gentle breeze had blown, and Shizuka looked in the direction the wind was blowing as leaves sailed along the current. He took one last look at her as she made to leave. ”Take care on your mission, Carroll. See you soon.”
He then began walking off back to the temple, thinking it’d be best to regroup with the others. As he walked, a lite smile was on the swordsman’s face. It was a strange feeling, like a lingering darkness that had plagued the back of his heart had been lifted, if only even slightly. Yurika. I know that you’ll always be with me. I won’t hide from my feelings anymore. More importantly, I know that I cannot do everything on my own, and I will cherish the comrades I’ve made. I will rely on them, as they rely on me. So rest, my beloved, his listless wanderer will continue on in this turbulent era and I’ll save as many lives as I am able.
”Thank you, Carroll.” He made one last utterance, as he walked off on the horizon.
"Baka... I said, don't thank me..." Carroll sighed, once Shizuka was long out of earshot, as he bade her farewell and good luck. Luck wasn't something she needed, but a miracle, and that wasn't something she deserved. Despite the strength returned, the hold she had over Alice was fragile, and would shattered in due time, if stressed.
At the very least, she could be shattered with somewhat of an absolved soul - her blade had guided Shizuka to some form of peace with himself and his past, but looking into the water, she only saw the sad face of a woman that meant nothing to her.
"Would revenge even soothe my soul at this point," Carroll asks.
"It would soothe mine."
Gasping, Carroll turned back; baring her bladed fingers to slice through Alice -- only for nothing to be there.
Alice was still at the docks, tiddy sandwiching Liliana.
"This is bad..."
She was in Her head, now.
"...I'm sorry, Shizuka. Your lover is going to die twice..."
Steeling herself, figuratively, Carroll readied to head back to Alice.
The countdown had begun...
”What do you mean, Carroll? I said that I would protect you, didn’t I?” The Cursed Weapon would turn to find Shizuka standing right behind her. ”From the way you spoke, you assured me that you were fine and that you had things under control here.”
He walked over to her, placing his hands on her shoulders. ”But, your chi tells me a different story. It’s almost like you’re preparing yourself for a death on the battlefield. Listen. I can understand why Alice would bear animosity towards you, and she perhaps deserves some form of retribution for it. But, I’d say the retribution can simply come in the form of living her own life, on her terms. There’s no need for you to suffer anymore.”
"WAH!" Carroll yelped, as she turned around - AGAIN - and nearly beheaded Shizuka before stopping herself with her tail. "Why would you sneak up on me!?"
”We’d often tease each other during our leisurely time. This was my method.” Shizuka responded with a smirk, not minding the tail inches away from his neck. ”You know, I thought about heading back to the temple and taking you with me. But, it seems you’re dead set on this mission. So, as the captain of the taskforce, I’m taking it upon myself to supervise the operation on Hama Island. Sounds good to you?”
Carroll puffed her cheeks up - embarrassed, indignant, and annoyed, and obviously smitten and pleased.
"Just don't get in the way, baka..." she huffed, turning to tsundere her way back to Alice and Liliana.
”I’ll maintain a light hand, Carroll. Worry not.” He replied. He followed right behind the cursed blade, chuckling lightly. He was amused that while she acted irritated, she obviously was hiding her delight at the sentiment.
"Callooh, Callay, O’ frabjous day..." Alice purred, as she kneaded Lilianna playfully between her breasts. "Soon... Soon..." she purred, turning to look at the approaching Cursed Sword and Samurai with a glowing, blue eye, "Off with her head..."
Smiling, Alice’s blue eye return to red, and she continued to tease and torment her unofficial Bladerflower.
Yuki’s expression softened as the smoke and ships appeared on the horizon as she knew full well what it meant. Staring off into the distance, her typical smile gone and replaced with a far sterner expression as she remained silent in the moment. Her thoughts on those that had committed the heinous acts, wishing there was more they could do for them, but the current situation was a difficult one. It hurt her to see others suffering for the selfish gains of another, most of the people that paid the price being innocent bystanders.
Hearing the swordsman sigh, and Io’s response and acknowledging her nod. Yuki broke her silence. “I believe that Shizuyama has a real chance, especially if we are able to unite more Yokai with the people of this land, that is something that the enemy will lack, and its our strength to work together that will overcome the narrow-mindedness of the foe, we may be fewer in number, but we are not fewer in determination or will power” Pausing for a brief moment as she turned her gaze from the swordsman to the lich.
A small smile reappearing as a thought crossed her mind that she wanted to get out “besides, even if I haven’t had the chance to work with too many of the task members for too long, the ones I have met and worked with are all amazing, and are all really strong, so if you have any doubts, just know that no matter what, not a single one of us will give up” Her eyes shifting back towards Kazenosuke with a grin on her face. “If you ever get scared, you can always run and hide behind me, I’ll protect you for the big bad scary guysssss” leaning forward with her hands clasped behind her back teasing him a bit as she was starting to feel a bit more like herself again.
And so, the conflict was postponed. Kerry had the good sense to leave so that the surroundings were not damaged, leaving Eula alone with the frightened villagers. It was over until Eula faced her again but...
Right now, Eula had other concerns. No doubt she'd be viewed as a traitor for going against Kerry, a senior, so...maybe it would be best to not return at all. The automaton resolved herself to this if need be, and would instead enter the house the monk was in, and would rustle through her own pouch. A small pouch of coins, cinched in a violet sack, would be laid down before him. Next, she would repair the superficial damage done to several houses, whether that was caused by Kerry's winds or not, and await the monk's awakening. In all likelihood, the villagers would still fear her for her association with the other "yokai", but...she had to believe in the monk.
He wouldn't call for help and walk to and for for a simple joke. The prank had been to alleviate the seriousness of the situation, especially in front of a child. Even a machine could tell that it wasn't the conclusion to whatever job Kerry and Relica had undergone. And so, Eula would wait for the monk to awaken after sitting him up outside of the house, seeing as the inhabitants of said house probably wanted their living space back. Eula had nothing anymore. No coin, no backup, and only one arm to fight whatever problems the Monk had away. ...But, it would have to be enough. She would make certain that the task force's reputation wouldn't be completely ruined. She HAD to succeed. As for Kerry...however that would work out was a detail for a later time.
After repairing the damages to the house the best she could, Eula waited for the monk to awaken outside the house they were in previously.
It was perhaps an hour before the monk stirred. "Ohhhh, what happened...?" He clutched his head. His eyes blinked a few times to regain orientation. He also tried to get up, but the pain in his head made sure that he could only barely stand. "Ohhh... the yokai... why...?" The monk recalled being attacked by his very own protectors. Of all the emotions he felt, confusion was chief among them.
But upon spotting Eula before him, things made even less sense. "Oh, madam yokai?" The monk said. "I... I believe I was attacked by the Gremlin yokai, and reprimanded by the hornet one." He recounted his memories. "But you are here... Am I misremembering things? Where are those two?"
"I will work to expand the chance of success. Through any means possible. The other task force members would do the same."
“If you ever get scared, you can always run and hide behind me, I’ll protect you for the big bad scary guysssss”
Instead of being reassured, Kazenosuke's mood soured at the yokai's optimism. "Do you two realize how large the Varjan army is? What can a bunch of yokai do to stop them?!" He started ranting.
"They have more warriors, more spellcasters, more weapons, more equipment..." Kazenosuke voice then lowered. "More opportunities, more prospects, more options for a future..." He then covered his mouth to stop himself, hopefully not revealing too much to Io and Yuki. "N-Never mind me, you two are right. The Varjans may have us beat, but with our combined power... We may have a chance."
"Now then, let's go. We should hurry to Terauchi Temple." Kazenosuke wanted to leave behind his outburst.
When Shizuka arrived and talked with Alice and Liliana, the rainbow knight silently went to a shed and hauled out a large wooden boat that came with a suitable oar. "Whew, good thing I brought a big one. What was once two became five. Just like those Vin Diesel movies..." He then hauled the boat to the water where he began playing with the seashells.
Upon seeing that the taskforce had all gathered together, the rainbow knight rose to address the group. "Oh, you guys are done with marriage counseling? We can finally get this show on the road..." The knight sighed. "Okay, first off: Hello, I'm Ian North. I'm here to help the taskforce if they get in a bind. I can't help all the time, though. I'm pretty busy myself. This is a whole-ass island that needs help, after all."
"But anyway, this boat's ready to take you to Hama Island. I'll row you guys there myself." Ian declared before looking at Shizuka and Carroll. "And really?! Really?! You two just gonna coochie-coo meters away from my boat?! Man, I don't get respect anywhere..."
"…You don't have to pity me. I can handle it just fine, you know. I'll find another husband just fine. And one much better than you at that,"
Despite Lunatea's cold rebuttal, Takeshi merely smiled more and even ruffled her head. "Hahaha, I'll be cheering you on, Lunatea."
Ayu finally returned and saw Takeshi and Lunatea little scene. "Hahaha! It's good to see that Lord Takeshi is getting along really well with the yokai." She cheered.
"Ah, Ayu! Just the woman I wanted to see!" Takeshi greeted her. "Madam Musubi told us many things. Things you ought to know as well."
"...So we need a port, huh?" Takeshi and Lunatea explained Musubi the Nurarihyon's news from Lady Kyouko. Now, Ayu's face was scrunched up in thought. "By now, all the major ports in Shizuyama are probably occupied. The Varjans know of their importance." She remarked.
It was then that Kerry and Relica made quite the dynamic entry from the air. After the Gremlin sulked off to her workshop, it was Takeshi himself who first greeted the Hornet. "Ah, Kerry! You're just in time. We're preparing for a... major move against the Varjans. Err, we're still planning it but it'll be good to have most, if not all, the taskforce here."
"What's this I hear about plans?" Takeshi was genuinely surprised when he heard that familiar voice. "I like plans. Don't leave me out of it." Io and Yuki had arrived along with their charge, Kazenosuke. "Gods above, they're right. You're still alive, Tak."
"I am only alive thanks to the yokai." Takeshi and Kazenosuke approached each other, before erupting into a hug. "It's good to see you, Kaze."
As Takeshi and Kazenosuke walked off as they caught up with each other, Ayu gathered Lunatea, Kerry, Io and Yuki. "Big news, everyone. Lady Kyouko has a fleet ready, but she needs a big enough port here to land it. Otherwise, the Varjan can inflict heavy losses on her fleet, even if they can't outright destroy it." The head spy explained. "Most, if not all, major ports in Shizuyama are already taken. That means we'll have to liberate one from the invaders."
"The closest major port here is Komatsu Bay. But I heard that place is as fortified as a castle, taking it head-on will be quite the challenge. Even for you, yokai, so I'm interested in your thoughts." Ayu said. "Although, I do have an idea... N-Never mind, it's not worth it."
Deciding to accompany Carroll, along with Alice and Liliana, to Hama Island, Shizuka would supervise the mission to ensure nothing went awry and that they returned as soon as possible. He of course was still considered that Alice might take this opportunity to inflict harm upon her cursed weapon. The man, who introduced himself as Ian North, had went to a nearby shed to drag out a boat large enough to fit all of them on. Diesel movies, what was he talking about? "Good to know we have an ally in you, North-san. Eh, what that about diesel?" Shizuka replied. North pointed out his and Carroll's intimate scene caused a sweatdrop to appear on his head.
"Y-You heard all of that...?" He was fully prepared for explaining the situation to Liliana and Alice, as monsters it'd be nearly impossible to hide the act from them. But apparently even the rainbow knight knew of their debauchery. "I meant no disrespect, I was just essentially healing an ally!" He tried to reason.
"A-Anyway, nevermind that now! Is there anything you can tell us about the situation on the island, anything we should know about?!" He said, attempting to change the subject.
Atsuha had barely responded as Takeshi, embarrassed, apologized for looking upon her naked body and promptly left. She was rather confused at his reaction, and supposed it just should be taken at his lack of understanding of yokai. Something like this wouldn't bother most instances of her kind, but she wasn't in the mood to tease the young lord and allowed him to leave without a word. Atsuha decided that she had spent enough time sulking in the springs and that she should focus on what's important. Hinami heavily on her thoughts, she rose from the spring and dried herself off. Leaving sakure petals flowing all over the water, Atsuha put her kimono back on and headed back toward the temple's main grounds.
Upon returning, she noticed more of the taskforce members had returned from their missions. She paid note at the ones who were still currently absent, including their captain. She also looked curiously at Kazennosuke, one of Takeshi's closest allies and fellow swordsman, seeing that Yuki and Io were the ones to return with him. Odd that Shizuka wasn't with them, wasn't he the one would took point on that mission? Given the man's standing, she ultimately trusted in his ability to keep himself out of trouble, and guessed that something else drew his attention. The others seemed to be discussing something, but she'd half to worry about that later, right now she had other worries to tend to.
--
After turning for a bit, Hinami would eventually start to calm down. "Tired...scared...want sister...here" She uttered, it seemed that her voice returned to normal as well. Her feral form had drained much of her chi, and with her strength depleted her primal frenzy could not sustain itself. Skarsneek and Yurine would then notice Atsuha enter the pagoda, going straight for her sister's side.
"I'm here, my nee-chan." She gently said, caressing Hinami in her arms. "The both of you have much thanks for looking after her for me." She said to both her lover and the gravekeeper. "I think that the others are discussing something of importance outside. I wanted to check on my sister before anything else, but since she's calmed down perhaps now would be a good time to get a lay of matters at hand. Yurine, perhaps we can go ahead and use the herbs to further calm her mind?"
Atsuha would then etch another seal onto Hinami's forehead. "Gods, it's pathetic that this is all I can do, but now that I've thought about it, I believe the chaotic flow of chi created by the state of the island is what's causing her outburst to happen so frequently. Before coming here, Hinami's never fallen into this state in this way before. I didn't expect the first seal to last that long, but things as they are right now certainly aren't helping..."
After the seal was finished, she laid her sister back down on her back. "But, enough about that, let's use the herbs and meet everyone outside for now. I'll fill my sister in on things later."
"Oh, we're finally planning an offensive? That's....great. Yeah, er...great. We should definitely focus on...thinking of ways to make sure things go our way.", Kerry responded, somewhat distracted as she looked down at the bag of coins in her chitinous hand, a conflicted expression seen by all on her face. She shook her head to dispel the inner turmoil of her thoughts. Her actions from the recent quest and the dilemma with Eula will have to wait as the hornet tossed the coin bag to Ayu.
"Hold on to that. Don't ask me where I got it. Now, if Komatsu Bay is fortified, then a full on assault would be a death sentence, not with the devastated numbers on Shizuyamian side. You got us, but there's only so much that we can do, so we'll have to be smart about this. Do you think there's anyone here, refugee or otherwise, that has been there? Any secret routes we can use to- wait, shit, I just remembered. Takamori's kid spilled the beans on that, so the Varjans may have any hidden pathways that we could've used covered."
ATTN: @PaulHaynek, @AzureKnight (Shizuka), & @The Irish Tree (Liliana)"Are you done talking? It is a strain on my eyes just to look at you, but, that you overspeak the sheer volume of that garish armor has become aggravating," Alice says, looking at Ian squarely. "Bit Players should be silent and reliable."
"But, then again, in a world where swords pretend they can be lovers, and bandits play pretend..." Alice tilted her eyes to Carroll and Shizuka, "Well, what do I know?"
Carroll bristled, as her tail stiffened, and her fingers sharpened into blades. She wasn’t stupid. She knew retribution was close at hand, and the price was her soul. However, Alice suddenly giggled, and slung an arm around Ian’s shoulders. "That said! As we learned from Sky High, Main Characters would be nothing without the dutiful, unsung heroes: the valiant Support Characters!" she says, "From the background to the foreground, without them, we would be standing around on our tippy-toes while sitting on our hands and twiddling our thumbs! Useless!"
Alice beamed, "Now, let’s get to rowing! I call stroke!" before she hurriedly took the lead position.
Shifting, Skarsneek moved to bounce around in case Hinami was still not in her right mind.
Thankfully that was unnecessary as Hinami looked to be finally back, just extremely exhausted.
That’s when Atsuha came in, and finally helped by inscribing the proper seals. He made sure to memorize the seal words, process and burned it into his mind.
When it was done, Skarsneek finally let go of Hinami and placed her in a more comfortable position.
“Right, let’s head out then.” Skarsneek said as he opened the door for everyone to head out.
Idly, he wondered what’s going on with everyone else. This was already quite the eventful day for him and with how much things went south.
Surely, it can’t get worse?
Though the moment that crossed his mind, he slapped the back of his head.
He just made it worse, didn’t he?
With that in mind, he wondered where everyone was before meeting them all at the temple.
Skarsneek waved a hand upwards and gestured to them. “Hey, what I missed?”
---
Gringor of the Ironhide Tribe
Gringor snorted in annoyance, looks like that too was another bust.
“Youz got any technique like that?” He asked, so far, it looks like he’ll have to copy the heavenly strike and unfortunately, he only saw the motions but not the deeper aspect.
Then again, maybe Boss Shizuka got something like that?
“Hmph, good talk.” Gringor waved his hands in thanks as he walked. “Try to do something, sitting all day not good for legs. Go see underboss Takeshi, always getting into a good scrap."
With that, he walked along and picked a direction to walk. Nowhere in particular as he just needed some time to think.
Unbeknownst to him, his wandering took him right back to the temple where everyone had gathered.
“Another scrap coming?” Gringor asked as he noticed everyone gathered around.
“Why the hell are you dressed like that? Wait, isn’t that-Did you take Kalaj armor?”
“I found it sitting with no one wanting it, so it means it’s mine.”
“That’s mine you mean! I won that fair and square-! Oh never mind, whatever, at least make sure you color it differently.” Skarsneek annoyedly rubbed the back of his head as he glared the High Orc, one that Gringor returned with a hand on hip and axe rested on against the shoulder.
@Enkryption, @AzureKnight ”Hiiii Ian!” Liliana said, squeezing herself free of Alice’s bosomy prison, while the sword on her back glowered at Carroll for a moment before huffily turning away…strangely now sitting vertically against Liliana’s back. Like it was glued to her. ”Is that what that was? Healing? Ohhh,” Liliana said, before flittering around Shizuka. ”Phew, that’s a relief. When I left I was sure you were going to **** and **** and then **** her right on the ****.” Liliana said, each R-18 word blocked out by a flock of seagulls. Of course, what she meant to say was: “Hug and snuggle and then kiss her right in the mouth” but comedy demanded a punching bag.
And today, that was Shizuka.
Liliana didn’t know at all what had transpired for most of the events preceding, but did know that Alice was oddly chipper about being lead stroke on the boat. ”Hi-Ho, its off to Hama we go!” the chipper fairy said, before picking up Whimsy. As if sensing the little fairy intended to use it as a paddle, the sword promptly pricked her thumb with a thorn, causing the fairy to wince and just pick up an oar. ”I wasn’t gonna Whimsy! I swear!”
Eula
There was no nice way to tell the monk that he had indeed been assaulted and robbed, so…Eula would do her best to explain this while not utterly shattering his faith in other mamono. ”I’m truly sorry but…that is exactly what happened,” the automaton said, lifting her sack of coins and placing them in the monk’s hands. ”I do not know how much was taken from you, but…I want to make it right. I should have stopped those two but I hadn’t expected…them to harm anyone,” Eula seemed genuinely remorseful, looking down at her empty hands. ”I understand you may hate yokai now. But…please, believe in me. I will help you with whatever quest those two promised, without payment. I cannot sit idly by while people suffer. And…I know that prank must have been to alleviate the boy’s worries.”
Standing, the automaton would outstretch a hand to the monk, an offer to help him up in spite of all that had happened. ”Much like humans, there are both good and bad in the hearts of yokai. …Please. Let me show you what good we can do, working with humanity.”” It was a longshot. Relica and Kerry had failed to keep their tempers, and now, Eula couldn't blame the monk if he lost his. But all she could do was try. People needed help.
"They even stole from me?! Why? It was but a harmless prank! Just... playing with their suspicions of me." The monk then let out a heavy sigh before taking Eula's hand to stand right up. "...I suppose it's my fault too. They were on edge and I decided to provoke them. I can only accept the consequences of my actions."
Looking at the house regretfully, the monk continued. "I guess Mika and her son also saw the incident? Gods, I shouldn't have done it..." He then looked at the money pouch Eula gave him, before handing it back to the Automaton. "Please, keep it. Let the theft be my punishment. Well, at least one of my punishments. Hopefully, the worst punishment that will come to me."
The monk then saw the closed houses and surmised the worst. "...Let us not linger here. I've worked hard convincing this village that the yokai are not to be feared. It is disheartening to watch it all erased in a single stroke."
---
Eula and the monk quietly made their way out of the remote village and back into the wilderness of Onrai. But at some point, the monk stopped taking the road and began to lead Eula up a tall, forested hill far from the dirt roads.
Getting past the dense trees, Eula soon found herself inside a sizable and populated camp. It was quite the feat for the surrounding forestry to hide this large a camp. Unfortunately, most of the people inside the camp were lying on sheets or just outright lying on the soil. There were only a scant few standing upright, helping those on the ground.
"Healer! My wife! She stopped breathing..." There was a villager man bawling as he cradled his lifeless beloved in his arms.
"...I'm sorry. I got here as fast as I could." The monk replied, but he received no response as the villager continued to weep.
Returning to Eula, the monk sighed. "If only I have gotten here sooner. I've wasted too much time frolicking about..." He pinched his temples as he continued to berate himself. "What was I thinking? I should've focused. I even gotten myself attacked by my own protectors..." Wiping his face in frustration, the monk recomposed himself. "I suppose I deserve nothing less."
"Thank you for escorting me, madam yokai, but I think this is where we'll part ways." The monk said. "Just as I am needed here, you are probably needed elsewhere. I'll stay here and... do what I can for these people."
"Healer, she is a yokai?" Another villager man asked.
"Yes. She... protected me well as she escorted me here." The monk answered. "Indeed, there are more of her kind here and they're here to help us."
The refugees here might hear a different story soon, but that was a problem for another time. The mission was complete and Eula can head back to Terauchi Temple or do something else like attempt to help the people in this camp.
"A-Anyway, nevermind that now! Is there anything you can tell us about the situation on the island, anything we should know about?!"
"Oh, just some dude swinging a sword in that island. Normally, that's not a problem but right now, a scary Varjan might notice and show him what real sword-swing looks like." Ian replied, completely forgetting the indecency the taskforce members displayed near his boat.
"Bit Players should be silent and reliable."
"From the background to the foreground, without them, we would be standing around on our tippy-toes while sitting on our hands and twiddling our thumbs! Useless!"
"...You know, you guys talk weird." Ian remarked, without a hint of irony. "I commend Lord Takeshi for putting up with you."
The rainbow knight then boarded the large boat and took the oar from Liliana. "Sorry, little sprite, but you're gonna need your strength for what you'll be doing later." After the cryptic comment, Ian rowed the taskforce to Hama Island.
-
Hama Island was just a tiny and rocky rocky piece of land with a couple of thin trees rooted in the mostly sandy ground. A thin, natural fog rolled into the land as Ian led the taskforce to a campsite consisting of one tent, some supplies and a training dummy. A well-built but middle-aged man was there, practicing sword strokes on the dummy. Unfortunately, his swings and his form were less than amateur.
"You better put that thing down before you hurt yourself." Ian greeted the man.
"What the-?! Who are you? Yokai?!" The villager pointed his sword at the newcomers.
"Relax, we're not here to hurt you. Just worried that you might take on the Varjan fleet yourself."
"Nothing of the sort, but I have to do something!" The man replied. "The Varjans captured my daughter!"
"Where'd they take her?"
"Out to their ships, the ones with the lowered sails." The villager pointed to a pair of anchored Varjans ships out in the distant water. A thick fog obscured the two vessels. "I found a boat, a sword... maybe some friendly yokai can help?"
"What do you say, my friends? Up for a little prison breakout?"
After Yurine assured Atsuha and Skarsneek that she would begin treating Hinami with the herbs, the latter joined the conversation outside.
Ayu took a look at the coin pouch Kerry tossed at her. An ominous shiver went down her spine, but she decided to trust the yokai. Surely, they knew what they were doing, right?
"Well, I know someone who's been there but he's... shady, to say the least." Ayu scratched the back of her head. "That and, his name is... well, I guess there's no dressing this up: His name is Shizuka. Not our Shizuka, of course, just same names." The head spy revealed. "Err, I guess we can find a way to handle the names later."
"Actually, that's not all. He's actually doing business with the Varjans." Ayu continued. "But that guy owes me, I'm sure he'll help us. His methods, though, can get... unorthodox so the question is, are you guys prepared for that?"
Io's arrival was fortuitous, as it seemed to be just in time for some sort of strategic planning meeting. The thought of planning instead of recklessly charging towards the nearest enemy greatly pleased her, for obvious reasons. She already began working on how she might be able to tailor a strategy towards this. She briefly frowned as she dismissed her initial thoughts - plans that would take entirely too long to employ, and/or require a prodigious amount of graverobbing. Neither would go over well. Io was still adjusting to working with humans - she hoped that the others in the task force were doing a better job of acting as good representatives to the locals.
"I believe," Io chimed in to Ayu's last statement, "That 'unorthodox' is our modus operandi." It was an equal part lament and praise, in Io's eyes. "But can we trust someone doing business with the enemy?" Io echoed the concerns that she was sure the rest of the task force felt. She held back a flurry of other potential questions she had - the fine details of geography, weather conditions, number of enemies, the type of foodstuffs they prepared, how many of the guards slept face up... The kind of information that could make or break magical strategies. Those would come later, if some kind of magical trick was needed to even the odds. Io secretly hoped there would be a need.
