Time: Evening
Location: Gaurav Village
Interactions: Phia@princess
Equipment: A pack with some supplies, seeds (in his pockets), a small knife, a mask that hangs from his belt, a weapon with a shifting charm that is either a sickle or a glaive, and a shield/drum with an unbreakable charm.

A bright smile broke across the face of the forest fae at the mention of an orchard and their very own riverfruit slush stand. He would make an excellent orchard-keeper and Phia sounded equally confident in her ability to run a business. “How fun! It would be a fam-” Cyrus stopped. A family business. A near slip. Lying was so much harder than he expected it to be. “A fantastic idea.” He corrected. He wouldn’t mind living here, tucked away from dark elves, the little family he had left kept safe, just tending to an orchard and serving refreshing treats to villagers. He too found himself lost in a daydream broken only by Phia’s next suggestion and her hand smacking against the table.

“Yes, Dante and Darius must be hungry too. We could bring the feast to them!” He suggested, matching Phia’s enthusiasm. “You said this village is wary of outsiders, yet Darius and Dante are not wolves and they seem very welcomed here.” He attempted to tuck a riverfruit into a pocket far too small as spoke. Eventually he decided it was best to eat the rest of the fruit as he continued to talk. “How have they managed to gain such trust? I believe Menzai and I have started off on the wrong foot and I would like to not make that a pattern here.”

Time: Evening
Location: Sailing aboard The Righteous Tern
Interactions: Rue@Potter
Equipment:Sword, hunting knife, a backpack with supplies, and a stoat named Raze who naps in the pocket of his vest.

“One of who?” Bowyn matched the hush tone Rue had used, wondering who Rue worried Bridget might be, or might be aligned with. A distant and haunted look quickly consumed her once peaceful expression. “Whatever Bridget is, and her alliances, barely matter. We are skilled hunters, Bardulf too, and she is just a deer. No one will take us again. On my life, Rue.” There was no need for the darkness of the past to drag Rue down as she soared.

Soon his attention was drawn to the ship’s deck and machine that Rue had spotted. Warforged, the artificial life. Not like fairies, elves, or anyother creature that roamed Avalia. They were not born, did not grow, simply machines built by others. Bowyn struggled to see any difference between such a thing and a cart or a ship or a tool.

“Doesn’t look like much of a warforged, can’t see anything that looks like a proper weapon. Unless it’s one of those real advanced ones. Probably cannon fodder. You think it’s Luum’s? He wondered. An advanced warforged with hidden weapons would be a real nice addition, something that didn’t look so dangerous but could blast it’s way through an small army. Did Luum even have that kind of amas? Doubtful. Probably a cannon fodder model, still useful. Always nice to have a machine to send towards destruction over a life.

Location: Guavav Village - Menzai's home
Interactions: @Helo Cyrus
Mentions: @Funnyguy Darius/Dante @Samreaper Menzai
Equipment: Staff with unbreaking and shift enchantment(shifts into dagger), Her bag, Water Purifier, Flask, some shiny pebbles
Attire:Dress, which she decorated with flowers and hung little charms off the ropes, A small antler headdress with flowers and jewels, amulet with Millinia Crest, wooden butterfly earrings, various bracelets

Phia tilted her head, sensing his pause, but Cyrus swiftly corrected himself. She offered him an encouraging smile, understanding the occasional stumble in conversation. When Cyrus proposed bringing the feast to Dante and Darius, Phia's grin widened. "Yes, that's a splendid idea!" she agreed wholeheartedly, her voice brimming with warmth.

As Cyrus pondered how Dante and Darius had earned the villagers' trust, Phia nodded thoughtfully, "It's intriguing, isn't it?" she began, "Please take care of this secret, but...Dante and Darius are humans with remarkable abilities. The villagers are quite fond of humans and we are training them to help us save Avalia," she explained, It won't be easy, but I think they can do it." she concluded.

She glanced downward with a smile as she thought of her precious new friends. "I plan to make sure they are kept safe no matter what."

Her gaze soon returned to Cyrus, "As for Menzai, he takes some time to warm up to new friends. He just wants to keep everyone here safe is all..." she told him, reaching out to gently pat his hand. "I'm sure there's still plenty of room for a fresh start. After all, every new encounter is an opportunity to try a different path."

"Damn it..." Seeing how this dark elf was unfazed by his ruse, Barrock couldn't do anything to prevent Veric from getting to Zora. His only hope that Aurora or Rowan could protect the girl from this assassin was dashed when he heard the sickening sound of the axe crunching into her bones. Tempers quickly rose in him. He imagined the elf being torn into a million pieces. Sliced, quartered. But Barrock reminded himself that the fight was still going on. His target was still at bay, and soon, in a fit of rage, the elf actually took the bait that he smartly avoided earlier.

Any plans or thoughts gave way to pure instinct, honed by thousands of hours of training, all focusing on the sword he had sheathed in his left hand. Barrock might be clumsy on his feet, but if the dark elf opponent was going to come to him, he might find the 'little' green grunt that he was intending to have fun with after finishing his mission to be faster than he anticipated. With breaknecking speed, the orc simultaneously unsheathed his sword and swung the sharp blade upward in one movement, while trying to side step the fist, albeit he could probably take it head on if it failed. The uppercut would be attempting to intercept Veric in his stomach area, and should be sharp enough to cut cleanly through him if made contact at this high of a velocity. Though it might end up cutting through Zora in the process, but the orc figured the girl was dead at this point, so vengeance comes at a higher priority.

If Veric got through the attack, the orc would very quickly be turning around, trying to close the distance to the elf and swung the sword downward at him as a follow up.

Bardulf

Time: Evening
Location: Aboard the Righteous Tern
Interaction: Masako @dreamingflowers

The springing to life set Bardulf on edge, as he noted the fingers that had made their way to his forehead before he could even react. He found the notion terrifying, but once his nerves settled he couldn't help but feel curious at the way the creature moved. It was very gentle to the touch, and the brushing of his hair solicited Bardulf to step back and tilt his head, almost like a confused animal.

Was she...checking my temperature? The man thought to himself for a brief moment. He certainly didn't feel ill but surmised that perhaps his flighty nature made the warforged think he was not feeling well. Rather than scurrying off like he normally would, Bardulf flexed the muscles in his feet as if to forcefully plant himself on the wooden deck of the ship and face his social quirks head on.

"Nothing in particular...Just a little stir-crazy with being on a ship for the first time. I like solid ground." With about as abrupt and straight-forward delivery as he could, Masako's question was still only partially answered. Bardulf truthfully had a lot on his mind but he knew divulging every little detail on his inner thoughts could spell disaster in a number of ways, so he opted for the surface level thoughts and complaints instead. Looking around, he gathered a brief bit of intel on where the others were standing on the ship before asking Masako another question. "This your first time too?"

“Umm. Start?”

He paused.

“Magic! Yes!”

Zeva’s tilted her head in subtle confusion, evident that the man was snapped out of some different train of thought or other. She couldn’t do much else but muster a defeated sigh, the high hopes she held for the man crashing as fast as they had been raised. The quickened ramblings that ensued contradicted his earlier statements. Nevertheless, Zeva resonated with parts of his seemingly random chatter – magic, for her, would better be used as a spare tool than her main weapon.

“Well, uh, thanks. Sure.” It was difficult to make her gratitude sound even half-sincere. She made a mental note to give his other tip a try later on, and collect light from her surroundings instead of generating it herself.

Eager to move on, Zeva redirected her line of sight to Bardulf and the pretty warforged, who had captured Luum’s attention so fiercely a moment ago. They were making light conversation, nothing more. Zeva’s attention hardly lasted on the pair, distracted soon after by the sounds of birds cawing as they flew overhead. Her eyes darted around the ship, finding little interesting to affix her gaze on. The deck was sparse; random barrels and crates were dispersed throughout the plank floors, and few crew members here and there minding their tasks. Aside from that, there was just an endless vast sea as far as Zeva could see.

“Any chance you know how long before we reach our destination?”

Time: Evening
Location: Village on the outskirts of Roshmi
Interaction: @princess Mari, @Apex Sunburn Scathael

“Wow, what a shithole!” Mari’s voiced first impression of the village they’d stepped into was not far off in Thraash’s opinion, though it hardly bothered him enough for him to mention it. Thraash had found himself in several spots like this one before he joined up with Mari. Villages like this made for excellent hideaways as a spare room was typically cheap if one lacked the funds for an inn or refused to shell more amas than necessary to enable the corruption of Avalian society. To think it was places like this one that held the most honesty. The big cities that were once kingdoms were nothing but King Zanithel’s decorated trophies of war. The peace and good order were but a veil that shrouded the blade that would plunge into those who even thought of going against the king’s grand design.

"To be honest, I know he's in this village, but I dunno where exactly...Hehe… But don't worry. I got this." Mari’s assurance only brought forth a scowl as he felt he knew what she was thinking.

“You’re gonna-”

“SCATHAEL! HEY SCATHAEL!!! GET YOUR ASS OUT HERE, BOY! Thraash winced as Mari’s voice boomed through the village.

“- yell. How ‘bout you warn a dragonborn next time?!” Thraash snapped. “Your vocals are ass so I could’ve at least added some flame effects or somethin’.” Thraash shook his head after he had added to the complaints made by some of the villagers who were irritated as well. As annoying as it was, however, it worked. The guy the two were searching for actually decided to respond.

But he don’t look or sound happy… Then again, what dark elf does? You’d swear they lost the damn war!

“Oh we’ve got work for you, alright,” Thraash answered as he walked to the gate. “But I’m not too sure if some small-time village handy-elf is up for it. Mari, this guy’s probably never even seen a warforged. He’s gonna give our tin can a baby arm… And not the kind you’re thinking, Scathael. Not judging.”

As Veric's battle-high faded in the split-second before he would follow through with the punch, his expression changed. The quick draw of the blade steadily approaching his mid-section proved to be enough of a deterrent to soften his blow. He was cocky, perhaps even foolish, but he wasn't idiotic enough to take sharpened steel head on. He quickly rolled himself away from the blow, opting instead for a backhanded punch against Barrock's arm to push the blade further away from him. However the bait proved to be very effective, and the orc landed a partial blow on Veric's side. The cut was shallow, but fresh blood still dripped from the slash as Veric lunged further behind the orc. The follow-up blow was close, but this time he opted to use the literal meat shield that still housed his axe to soften the blow. With a twisted grin he shifted Zora's corpse between the sword and his body, and let Barrock decide. Either he could continue the strike and possibly land a blow at the risk of further ruining his dead comrade's corpse, or he could forsake the idea give Veric some distance.

No matter the result, Veric would backpedal several steps and pull his weapon from Zora with a horrific SHLUNK and place it onto his back. The elf reached down to grab the small iron ball that had proven to be far less than useful in this combat and then addressed the party.

"You little ones are awfully luck I don't got the time to be laying you all six feet under. But if you follow me, I could bring the General some more battle trophies. Makes no difference to me. Savor the fact you lived to fight me - even put a few scratches on me. But don't push your luck!"

Just as quickly as he rushed in, the man turned and began huffing the corpse, his gear, and his muscle-bound self into the tree line. Veric was burdened but by no means crippled, and the weight of the woman he just killed was not much to his carrying capabilities. Using the still-fresh confusion in the air he figured it would give him just enough time to put some space between him and the group.

Interesting playthings you've given me, General. Very interesting indeed. He thought to himself with a wicked smile.

With that, the party stood in the clearing, the only remaining evidence of their friend being the splattered red stain on the grass beneath their feet, and the dreadful feeling of a lost companion.

“Well, uh, thanks. Sure.”

Zeva’s lack of sincerity did not go unnoticed but at the same time, he could hardly blame the young elf. As much as he loved the idea of a young upstart inquiring about magic, especially light magic, taking his full attention off of Bardulf was not an option he was comfortable with. He only hoped the girl would make some progress in her untapped arcane talents. As ugly of an explanation as it may have been, Mister Luum did give her two paths. Zeva could choose to follow the path of magic laid before her by sticking to whatever she happened to have an aptitude for and leaning on that or she could very well forge her own path. A path she chose to take despite what she may have had a knack for. Either way, Mister Luum would learn just a little bit more about Zeva’s nature.
But what if she’s good at something enjoys? Damn… my wise-elderly-fellow-that-gives-cryptic-advice-that-happens-to-be-helpful act needs work. Good thing I have a few more centuries!

Mister Luum kept up his grin as he nodded with optimism while Zeva’s attention was pulled away by her surroundings. He kept quiet, casually watching Bardulf as she searched for something to latch her mind onto.

“Any chance you know how long before we reach our destination?”

“North Pass? Um… Should beee… Carry the three- no, the FOUR, minus five, yes…” Mister Luum squinted as he raised his free hand and did some sort of obscure math with his fingers. “We should make it by tomorrow afternoon at the latest but hopefully, we make it right before lunch. You’ll like North Pass plenty, I believe. There will definitely be some action for our party to get into there. You can test those new daggers of yours out. BUT first, we need to acquire that warforged and find a nice place to lay our heads during our stay. Take this time on the sea to relieve yourself of any doubts and regrets about undergoing this journey. This could be the last moment of calm we have the luxury of basking in. Enjoy this calm. Trust me.”

As soon as Phia voiced her approval, Cyrus immediately began carefully removing fruits from baskets on the table and repacking the baskets to bring a late night picnic to Dante and Darius. He listened and Phia continued to speak on how intriguing Dante and Darius truly were.

“Humans?” Cyrus whispered dropping a plate of carved meats back down on the with a loud clatter. “How did they get here?” He asked, but before Phia had time to respond to that he added, “Whose involved?” His mouth moved quicker than his mind, asking questions that would’ve aroused suspicion if any of the wolf-kin were around. “Much of my family died trying to free The River Fairy Kingdom from dark elf rule, if this fight has returned, I am bound to it.” His intensity flared only to flicker out as he returned to the task of filling baskets.

“I wish to help you keep your friends safe. And I will try a new path with Menzai tomorrow.”

Rue went to reply but the words were lost in her throat. She nodded in agreement when Bowyn continued to speak. ”Me too,” Rue replied and looked over her shoulder to smile at him so he didn’t worry if he had started.

”I can’t see much either, but it would be nice to have more allies. I doubt it’s Luums, though who knows with him.” Rue contemplated the scenario and continued. ”Let’s hope it’s on our side.” She had a neutral stance on them; they were interesting to her. Like all species, she was wary of them as well. Her curiosity with the way they lived and behaved was inexplicable. Rue let out a soft smile.

”Maybe they’ll be a great ally. All we can do is hope for the best. If not, I think there’s enough of us to defend Bardulf.” Rue glanced over at Starfire and patted her neck. The Pegasus whinnied loudly with joy and caused Rue to laugh. Soaring in the skies with Bowyn and Starfire was relaxing and fun, especially over the sea which she thought she would never see as a young fae growing up. The salt breeze against her face and the wind her hair and wings was worth the struggles she’d endured to come this far; especially with someone as handsome and loyal as Bowyn. She reached over and took his hand gently. ”I wish we could stay up here forever, away from the war, but we’ve risked too much to leave it now.”

Mari trailed behind Thraash, her amusement evident in the mischievous glint in her eyes. "A tiny baby arm would be perfect for FIVE, Thraash!" she teased, barely able to contain her laughter as they approached the gate. With a dismissive wave of her hand, she added, "Nah I heard this guy is good. This'll be easy as pie for him..."

As Mari came to a halt before Scathael, she offered a casual wave, "Hey there! I'm Mari, and this big lug here is Thraash." Her tone was friendly but direct, wasting no time in getting to the point.

"We do indeedy do have work for you," she continued with a grin, "We've got a warforged with a fucked-up arm. Think if we lead you to him, you can work your magic and fix it up?"

Scathael arched a brow at the Dragonborn’s words. He wasn’t offended – this wouldn’t be the first, or last, time someone mistook him for a mere village smith – but rather, he was amused. “You walked all this way, only to question my skills when you’re here?” The look in his eyes was one of utter disinterest, his voice a flat monotone, and every part of his body telling the two that he honestly couldn’t care less whether or not they actually hired him. Granted, the prospect of working on a warforged was tempting, but he didn’t trust these two. Not enough to follow them to who-knows-where after dark, at least.

It was for that reason that he started to dismiss them. But then, the Light Elf spoke up. Her words carried a sort of energy that was somehow simultaneously eminently annoying, but also strangely nostalgic. As if it reminded him of someone.

Scathael quickly nipped that thought in the bud. She was dead. There were many people who were similar to her, but none who were her. He had made the mistake of going down that road once. Never again. Still, he couldn’t help but soften his tone as he addressed Mari, something which didn’t escape his own notice, and something which annoyed him to no end. “You already know who I am, so I won’t bother introducing myself,” he said and looked at her and the Dragonborn in turn. “I saw the two of you in Roshmi. You fought a warforged there, did you not?”

He paused for a moment, then turned to pack up his tools. “I’m guessing that the warforged you want fixed is the same one you tried so hard to destroy. Not unless you have another one tucked away somewhere. I don’t think that’s the case, though.” Turning back to the pair, he continued, “Surely you can see why things feel suspicious to me. Why are you going through so much trouble to fix an enemy? I’m not saying I won’t do it, but I want to know more before agreeing to anything. And I want a guarantee that I won’t find a knife in my back once I leave with you.” He paused again and shrugged. “Some have tried that before.”

The day after Zora died, a palpable shift rippled through the air of Avalia. A dead human had been delivered to King Zanithel's court, triggering a tightening of reigns.

In a chilling declaration to his subjects, King Zanithel proclaimed the arrival of humans as a dire threat to Avalia. With a flick of his finger, tendrils of darkness ensnared the corpse, lifting it for all to see. Through a cast sphere, King Zanithel broadcasted his message, branding humans as terrorists and offering rewards for their capture or demise. The kingdom was put on high alert, with authorities tasked to eliminate the perceived threat at any cost.

The next twenty four hours were marked by a reign of terror characterized by public floggings, stringent curfews, and invasive searches. Those suspected of rebellion faced swift and brutal public executions, casting a dark shadow over the land.

Amidst chants of "ALL HAIL KING ZANITHEL," the once vibrant kingdom of Avalia now stood on the precipice of darkness, its future veiled in uncertainty.

  • Zora is dead
  • Public floggings, whippings, arrests, and executions are more prevalent.
  • Increased guards in large cities.
  • Humans are considered national terrorists and have bounties on them.
  • Enstille and Malachi are called to work closely with Vaeril upon rising tensions
  • Zion and Jun are relocated to the pirate ship with Tanithil, Amisra, Arlen, Sirena, and Ismael.
  • A replacement water human has been summoned to join Aurora and Barrock named Vasco.
  • After leaving to assist Mari and Thraash, Scathael's village is attacked. He no longer has anything to return to.
  • Extermination of known rebel settlements and groups has begun.
  • Propaganda has been showing up for and against humans in many of the larger cities.

Time: Morning, Day Before Current Time
Location:Throne Room, Malthemoor

The blood-matted body of a sliced-through corpse was dropped onto the chamber floor like discarded trash. The irony of such a display. A human. A being so valuable and with so much potential in these lands, reduced to being a disheveled husk of flesh. The guards whispered to one another, filling the chamber with the echoes of faint voices as King Zanithel stood from his throne while remaining silent. Since the briefing yesterday, Deyanira had informed him of this threat to his hold on the kingdom. Their power would swell until they eventually served as the harbingers of everything he had established. If the demigoddess were anyone else, he would have had his doubts. He might have even stayed his hand until he caught wind of a tangible imminence from them.
Even with such a trophy of victory before his very eyes, he couldn’t help but feel his cold distant heart alight with fury towards it. He had sought to squash attempts at rebellion with a swift yet careful hand but now he found this carefulness to only be a kindness to his enemies. No longer was he facing armies of people he knew how to manipulate and play against. He now faced an abhorrent force that would tear down any hopes for his future vision. To summon these humans with hopes of harnessing power he could not stop with carefulness.
Veric Dalamor’s deliverance of this human was a truer sign than any, that he had to not just hold Avalia firmly in his grasp but squeeze it so tightly that the filth within bursts from it.
“So it’s true. People with rounded ears and the ability to harness power over the elements. To witness that they do not look so alien to us is… problematic. But if these rebels believe I will simply lie in wait, they will be utterly disappointed.” There was an intense look in his eyes and he slowly walked toward the corpse. “You arrived to Avalia to die! And you will be an example of what happens to the rest of your kind!” With a flick of his finger, several tendrils of darkness raised from the ground and entangled themselves around Zora’s corpse. The tendrils forced her body upright so he could face her lifeless visage with every ounce of enmity he had toward her.
“I want the world to see you, filth. I want her image projected across Avalia.” He spoke with such ire.
The cast sphere, a technology utilized to broadcast formal announcements and events to major cities and frequented locations, was activated. It displayed Zora being held up, with her gruesome slash wound on full display beside King Zanithel.
“Greetings Kingdom of Avalia. Your king has a very important message to give to those within it! This thing! This creature is known as a human. A handful of them have arrived from another realm to destroy our precious kingdom! Summoned by none other than terrorists who seek to snatch a prosperous future from not only us but our children! And look closely! These creatures do not look too different from members of our varying species. However, their most obvious feature is their rounded ears.” King Zanithel stepped aside and moved Zora closer to the cast sphere while rotating her slightly. Her right ear was on full display. “Other than this detail, they don’t appear to look much different from a typical light elf but there is another obvious tell, Avalians! These creatures also possess destructive magic over the elements of water, fire, earth, air, and lightning! They harness these elements with unnatural ease and will possess power that would even put to shame the violence caused by the barbarous war criminal, The Beacon of Dread! However, we as a kingdom shall snuff them and their rebellious conspirators out! They may harness dangerous magic power but I show you now that they can be slain! We may not be facing an army but consider us to be at war… there will be bounty posters for these humans and these terrorists offering a great sum of amas! Offers of freedom for those who are legally enslaved! Offers to grant full citizenship for warforged! I desire the deaths of these humans, and those who bring me proof of their deaths shall be generously rewarded for performing a duty for their kingdom and fulfilling the desires of their king! Until then, measures will be taken by authorities to ensure this blight is eliminated! Be vigilant Avalia, our foes are not deserving enough to continue to hide within the shroud of darkness!”

Time: Morning
Location: Camp outside Roshmi

Two days had passed since Scathael decided to accompany Mari and Thraash back to their camp to assist with FIVE's arm. However, just a day prior, when the trio returned to the village, Mari's stomach had churned with dread. The sight that greeted them was a scene straight from her darkest nightmares. The once vibrant streets now lay desolate, the buildings in shambles or burnt to the ground. But it wasn't just the sight that struck shock into their hearts; it was the smell - a sickly sweet odor that clung to the air like a suffocating shroud. The bodies lay scattered throughout the streets, frozen in contorted poses of agony. Mari's breath caught in her throat as she took in the sight.

The only survivor seemed to be a demihuman foxgirl named Vallana whom Scathael was acquainted with. Mari's voice had been a mere whisper as she urged her companions to cover their noses and mouths. She hadn't cracked any jokes this time and was uncharacteristically quiet during the whole ordeal. The journey back to the camp was a blur from there as both Scathael and Vallana followed them.

Now, as the sun crept over the horizon, casting a warm glow over the dense forest, the group was gathered around a campfire deep in the woods. As the crackling flames danced in the early morning light, Aerilyn took charge of breakfast. The sizzle of cooking eggs filled the air along with the tantalizing aroma. Mari's gaze was locked on them as she watched them bubble and hiss in the heat. Her blonde hair was thrown up in a messy bun and she pulled her jacket around her shoulders. Still, surprisingly enough, she hadn't been all too chatty until this point.

"I'm pissed off." She finally announced to the group, perhaps collecting their gazes.

Time: Morning
Location: Guavav Village - Menzai's home
Interactions: @Funnyguy Darius @Samreaper Menzai @Helo Cyrus
Equipment: Staff with unbreaking and shift enchantment(shifts into dagger), Her bag, Water Purifier, Flask, some shiny pebbles
Attire:Dress, which she decorated with flowers and hung little charms off the ropes, A small antler headdress with flowers and jewels, amulet with Millinia Crest, wooden butterfly earrings, various bracelets

The group had been situated around the dining room table this drizzly morning. Outside, the rain fell steadily, a soft patter against the windows that echoed. The wooden roof above creaked softly under the weight of the rain. The room was bathed in arm lighting from the candles on the table. Just as the last crumbs of breakfast were being swept away, Phia's sudden burst of energy cut through the subdued atmosphere. With a mischievous twinkle in her eye, Phia banged her spoon over and over on the table with an enthusiasm that bordered on excessive, effectively halting all conversation in its tracks. As the attention of the group turned towards her, she grinned and waved the spoon in the air like a makeshift flag. "I have an idea." She announced, her voice ringing with excitement despite the gloomy backdrop.

"I think we should bring the fliers we made to River Fairy Kingdom to help Cyrus find his family. There are many fairies there, and rumor has it they have riverfruit slushes." Phia had longed to visit there more often, only successfully sneaking over there once or twice. Menzai always dragged her back and she had never been certain why. Nonetheless, her proposal hung in the air. Her eyes sparkled with anticipation as she continued, "Plus, Dante and Darius have been putting in so much effort during training sessions lately. It's high time we showed them a bit of fun."

What had he done?

Ashen smoke and putrid rot mixed to form a nauseating miasma in Scathael’s nose. Blackened wood and shattered corpses greeted his eyes wherever he rested his gaze. Behind the crackle of smouldering thatch and groans of collapsing houses, Scathael heard the screeches of carrion and growls of scavengers. That there was ever a village here – with people who lived and dreamed and just existed, and people whom he knew – just felt so surreal. As if this burnt, devastated ruin had been just that this entire time, and Scathael had dreamt up his entire time here.

But that wasn’t the case. He knew that.

That smoking hut to his right, with its once-flowering garden of pungent herbs and vibrant flowers now little more than mounds of mud, had once been the apothecary. The kindly old woman who had lived there had helped Scathael patch up his wounds the day he first entered the village. On his left, the pile of rubble that stretched out onto the main street had once been a house. Scathael knew the family who lived there – the mother had fed him on the two occasions he had to help the father with repairs. And there, near the head of the main street, laid what once was a simple farmstead. The old man who worked the fields there never did warm up to Scathael, but always paid generously with his produce.

Scathael didn’t know them well, but they had treated him fairly. They surely didn’t deserve such an end, to lay broken amidst the remnants of their own homes.

Just what had he done?

You wanted to stay.

The answer came to him quickly enough. Though the voice was hers, he knew the words weren’t. That did little to stop the sting, however used to it as he was. But she – or it, or they, or whatever it was – was right; all of this came about simply because he even entertained the idea of stopping. Nevermind that he never would have seriously considered the option. Just the mere thought of it was enough for fate to decide that he needed another reminder to always be on the move. It happened with his family. It happened with her, it happened with many other places, and now it happened again.

This was your fault.

Scathael squeezed his eyes shut. Focus. He had to focus. What was done, was done. All of the guilt, all of the sorrow in the world wouldn’t change a thing. The village was gone. On whose head was the blame laid was irrelevant. Scathael had to look ahead, at where his path would bring him next. He had to be prepared for whatever would come his way, and that meant that he needed supplies.

And so, he made his way back to the blacksmith’s home. Compared to the rest of the village, it was largely intact. The walls were still standing, even if the roof had caved in. Most of the tools and materials Scathael wanted – such as ingots, files, sandpaper, and whetstones – were gone, but still he searched. He tried his best to ignore the familiar corpses that laid in misshapen heaps not too far away. It had only been just two days ago when they had been conversing about everything and nothing amidst a peaceful night. And now, they were dead and Scathael was left alive. The dark elf tried not to think about that as well, as difficult as it was. How could it be easy, when their bloodied faces were right there for him to see?

“Scathael?”

That hoarse, whisper-quiet voice came so suddenly, and so softly, that Scathael didn’t believe it to be real at first. Only when it repeated itself – straining to call for him once more – did he understand that he wasn’t hearing things. He immediately stopped whatever he was doing and dug his way towards the voice, prying burnt planks from where they were jammed, and tossing loose debris aside. “Yes, it’s me,” he replied. “Try not to move. It’s dangerous.”

Hidden behind a stack of crates and empty roughspun sacks was the foxgirl, Vallana. She was huddled on the ground, with knees brought up to her chest. Tears, both fresh and old, stained her face. Her ears were flat against her head, and she couldn’t stop shivering. Whether it was out of cold, hunger, or fear, Scathael couldn’t tell. Black soot and dirt covered her skin and clothes. “S-Scathael? Are…Are you real?” Her voice quavered and faltered as she looked at him with wide, disbelieving eyes.

“Yes,” Scathael answered, but heard himself as if he were a mere observer.

Vallan’s lips quivered, and she sniffed. “Th-They came–” she began, but had to stop as she choked. Large tears dripped onto the ground, and she wiped her eyes with filthy hands as she wailed. Through her sobs, she cried for her father, her mother, for everything that she never again would have. Her little body heaved with grief and sorrow.

For what felt like an eternity, Scathael could only watch. His worry and concern were plain on his face, but he didn’t know what to do. This wasn’t a problem he could fix; there was nothing he could make that would make things better for Vallana. And so, he froze. His mind, however, dragged him back to the day when he found his own family, cold and dead in their own home. He recalled the dark gloom that had consumed his entire being; the grey nothingness which had coloured his world, and the dreadful uncertainty that had left him paralysed for so long. But he was lucky. He had already been an accomplished engineer and tinkerer when that happened. Good enough to let him survive on his own until he was well-enough to move on.

Vallana, however, had nothing. What would she do from now on? What could she do?

Scathael gulped. He didn’t have the answers to those questions. But he knew that he couldn’t leave her. It would be unconscionable, even for him. “Vallana,” he called to her as gently as he could and knelt. “I can’t reach you.” He reached for her with both arms outstretched. “You have to come to me. We can’t stay here, whoever did this could still be around.” The foxgirl flinched at the mention of the ones who had sacked the village. “Vallana, you have to come. You know you won’t last long alone. I don’t want that, so please, come to me and we can get away from here. We can think about what to do afterwards, but we can’t do anything until we’re safe.”

Vallana sniffed, but nodded. She crawled her way to Scathael, and it was clear from her slow and lethargic movements that she was nearing the end of her strength. Thankfully, she got close enough for Scathael to pull her from the rubble. “It’s okay,” he whispered as he carried her in his arms. She was light. Too light for a girl of her age. “It’s okay,” he repeated. Those words didn’t even register in his head. All that mattered to him was that they seemed to calm Vallana somewhat. “It’s okay.”

And somewhere in his head, he heard a response. Liar.

Only this time, the voice was his own.

Morning came as a dreadful surprise for Scathael. The past two days – or was it just one – had been but a blur to him. Between taking care of Vallana and making adjustments to the Warforged’s repairs, he barely had any time to sleep for long, nevermind go about his daily work.

The latter was an easy, if boring and mind-numbing, task. Reattaching the Warforged’s arm to his shoulder had been a fairly straightforward job, as such jobs usually were. The problem had been mechanical – the Dragonborn had thankfully avoided damaging any magical circuitry – and so all Scathael had to do was to grind the damaged, jagged parts smooth, and rejoin the limb to its socket with the aid of patch plates. That was where most jobs would end, but because the repair involved a joint, Scathael had to keep watch over the Warforged to make sure that the plates weren’t getting in the way of their arm’s usual range of motion.

It was a lengthy process – one that required a lot of welding and de-welding – but it was the proper way of doing things, and most importantly, gave him a reason to stick around the motley group.

As much as Scathael preferred to be alone – and as experienced as he was a wayfarer – he wasn’t foolish enough to believe that he could take care of Vallana on his own. The traumatised foxgirl had barely left his side since leaving the village. Whether it was eating, sleeping, or travelling, she refused to even be a step away from Scathael. The Dark Elf had to admit, however, that he wasn’t quite sure whether that was due to what Vallana suffered, or simply because of their travelling companions. A Warforged and a Dragonborn were intimidating presences even to seasoned adventurers, let alone a mere child. And Mari, friendly and loud as she was, was still a stranger.

Either way, it meant that Scathael spent most of whatever time he had left after inspecting the Warforged on Vallana. He didn’t regret it – it was his choice to take her, after all – but he did find himself wishing that a day had at least a dozen more hours.

And now, as the sun rose on a new day and breakfast sizzled over an open fire, Scathael sat on the naked earth with legs crossed and shoulders hunched. In his hands, he whittled curves into a small block of solid oak. Vallana was sound asleep beside him, swaddled up in his travelling cloak. This was probably the first proper rest the girl managed to catch since leaving the village, and so he took care to be quiet. Every now and then, he glanced at her, making sure that she was still asleep and undisturbed.

Mari’s sudden statement caught his attention. “Are you going to tell us why?” He asked pointedly in a quiet voice, then tilted his head towards Vallana. “Keep it down if you do. She’s finally sleeping soundly and I’m not going to be happy if she gets woken prematurely.”

Time: Two nights ago
Location: Helius → Rebel Village

As only hours had passed since humans were confirmed in the higher ranks, Zalthraxis set his plan in motion to begin cleansing known rebel settlements. The village lay quiet under the moon's silver glow, casting long shadows across the cobblestone streets. Children played in the dimly lit alleys, their laughter echoing through the night air. Meanwhile, adults traversed the village, exchanging hushed conversations with other villagers. It was a night like any other.

Zalthraxis had meticulously prepared for this crucial moment, spending countless days refining new techniques and developing potent chemicals to eradicate the threat that jeopardized the reality the king had worked so tirelessly to establish.

"Land in the clearing just before the village entrance." Zalthraxis commanded the pilot, his voice carrying an air of authority and calmness. The pilot obeyed, guiding the aircraft with precision as it descended towards the designated spot on the ground.

The clearing was bathed in the soft glow of moonlight, casting an ethereal sheen over the surrounding trees. The village entrance loomed ahead, its wooden gate standing as a barrier between safety and impending doom. As the aircraft touched down with a gentle thud, the tension in the air became palpable, a silent precursor to the storm of despair and death that was about to unfold.

As the Helius powered down and the doors hissed open, Dark Elf soldiers clad in black outfits and donning gas masks disembarked in disciplined formation, flanking each side of the aircraft's entrance with unwavering vigilance. Zalthraxis emerged, his presence commanding respect as he planted his feet firmly on the ground, eyes scanning the surroundings with a calculated focus.

"Deploy soldiers to secure the perimeter. Any attempts to flee must be met with capture, and ensure that slave collars are fitted," Zalthraxis ordered with a cold authority, his voice cutting through the night air. "Prioritize capturing children first, separating them from the adults among the subjects." The soldiers, trained for such operations, swiftly dispersed into the shadows, executing their orders with ruthless efficiency. The air crackled with tension as the mission unfolded, each movement a step closer to asserting control over the village and quelling any resistance to the king's vision. "The rest of you are to, follow me," Zalthraxis commanded, leading the company of soldiers towards the heart of the village. Their approach didn't go unnoticed, as weary eyes from the villagers watched with a mixture of fear and curiosity. Some hurried indoors, while others cautiously edged closer, drawn by the spectacle unfolding before them.

Zalthraxis's gaze swept over the gathering crowd with a chilling intent, his voice carrying across the tense atmosphere. "Greetings, I'm sure you're all curious about our presence here." He raised a clawed hand, two fingers extended. "Allow me to provide two simple answers. Firstly, known traitors to the king have been traced to this very place." One finger lowered, emphasizing his point. "And secondly, intelligence suggests that this village serves as a frequent base for rebels intent on overthrowing the king."

A pause hung heavy in the air, Zalthraxis's hand curling into a tight fist. "In light of these revelations, you are faced with a choice: submit or suffer the consequences." With a quick motion, he donned a gas mask, a symbol of the impending chaos, and signaled for his soldiers to commence their assault.

Moments after the canisters of magically enhanced green dragon breath were unleashed upon the unsuspecting crowds and the narrow streets of the village, a cacophony of terror erupted. The air filled with anguished screams as soldiers moved with ruthless precision, either cutting down those who tried to flee or dragging them away as prisoners. The resistance, however, was fierce. Some, driven by desperation or sheer will, fought back against the onslaught. They attempted to overpower Zalthraxis's soldiers, using whatever makeshift weapons they could find to snatch the precious gas masks from their foes.

Beneath his mask, Zalthraxis's lips curled into a cold smile as chaos unfolded around him. He relished the chaos, savoring every moment of the brutality that ensued. With a fluid motion, he unsheathed his sword, the blade gleaming in the dim light as he lunged at a demi-human who had just taken the life of one of his soldiers. In one swift stroke, he cleaved the assailant in half, his expression portraying a savage satisfaction.

For the next harrowing thirty minutes, the village became a symphony of suffering and despair. The agonized cries of the wounded mingled with the crackling of flames, devouring houses caught in the crossfire of magical blasts and fire bombs. The once serene streets now bore witness to a nightmarish scene akin to the hells, a testament to Zalthraxis's unwavering resolve and the merciless efficiency of his forces.

As silence slowly descended upon the ravaged village, Zalthraxis's soldiers swiftly shifted gears, their focus now on eliminating any remaining survivors and scouring the area for valuable items. The aftermath was a haunting tableau of destruction and despair, with smoldering ruins and scattered remnants of once vibrant lives bearing witness to the brutality that had unfolded.

Survivors, if any, were dealt with efficiently, either through execution or capture. The prisoners, a grim reminder of the night's horrors, were herded into the Helius, their eyes reflecting a mixture of fear, defiance, and resignation. The air hung heavy with the weight of loss and devastation as the aircraft's engines roared to life, ready to depart into the night shrouded in darkness and secrecy.

The Helius then ascended, leaving behind a village forever altered by the violence and oppression, an eerie calm settled over the scene. The night air whispered secrets of the atrocities witnessed, yet the world outside remained oblivious to the tragedy that had unfolded under the cloak of darkness. The cycle of power and control continued, unyielding and relentless, as if the events of that fateful night were nothing more than a fleeting nightmare forgotten by the morning light.

Saltrunner VS The Silver Eyes

With the lighting of ammunition from Arlen, the sea-faring vessels became locked in a deadly back and forth bout. For what felt like hours, the two crews traded glancing blows of cannonballs and failed attempts at boarding one another's decks. Tanithil's magic helped stop the Saltunner's main body from sustaining damage - as well as the damage control from Sirena who diligently looked after both ship and crew member. Arlen served as the primary source of "firepower" when it came to magical feats - having known his magic far longer than their other powerhouse, Ismael. But the two served to be a deadly combo together, proving that the human and elf duo would do more than simply "beat" the enemy. No, they would make sure to blind, sear, and blow them away with raw magical power.

Tanithil, with his never-ending bag of shadowy tricks, was able to keep the ranged threats at bay - blocking cannonballs and forcing boarding parties to slip and fall into the treacherous waters below. Those who slipped through the cracks had to deal with a fierce gang of scrappers led by Amisra - who was pissed to be bothered during her wounded state but also elated that she wouldn't need to be babysat by her friend. The group of physical fighters dealt with any on board threats swiftly - albeit with some minor casualties to some of the poor deckhands who weren't quite up to par on their swordsmanship.

As the fight waged on, there was a clear sign that the enemy would not let up, and Tanithil felt his magical reserves begin to run low as multiple strafing runs kept slamming into the side of the ship. The thin veil of shadow magic he was using to shield their boat began to crack - and there was a slowly turning tide in the favor of the Silver Eyes in this battle. But this is where the wild card of the group came to play ball. Ismael, the ever daring man, decided to join one of the Saltrunner's raiding parties against Tanithil's better judgement - and began to showcase just how destructive his element really was. In mere moments the enemy's ship began to go up in a blaze that could only be described as a miniaturized sun cascading down on the poor wooden frame of what was once a sea-worthy vessel. The raw power of the human showcasing his elemental magic became so intense that the raiding crew he was with had to bail early to avoid being scorched.

From the deck of their own ship, the crew had slowed their battle stations to a near halt as they watched the Silver Eyes frantically swarm to take care of this new urgent threat - but everything they threw at the man proved to be useless. Ranged attacks simply incinerated at the simplest flick of Ismael's wrist, and any close-combat fighters were swiftly dealt with thanks to the mans real world military expertise. It was a fine combination of tact, combat instinct, and magical power that impressed the Saltunner vapidly. And as the ship began to go down in literal flames the crew began to cheer and sing praises for Ismael who stood at the stern of the sinking ship ready to make his journey back to the Saltunner. Tanithil steered the ship towards the wreckage in an effort to meet the human partway. But his notions would soon be all for naught.

Once the dust began to settle, and the only noise that came from the Silver Eyes ship was crackling wood and the fizzing of flames hitting the water, Tanithil spied a single shadow moving from the flames. His eyes widened and his voice rang out in an attempt to warn the man of the unseen assailant, but to no avail. The shadow quickly revealed himself to be the burned, worn, and dying captain of the ship Ismael had almost single-handedly sank. A shimmer of light began to form in the mans hand as he slowly approached Ismael, seemingly too caught up in the moment to notice - until it was too late. A sudden realization from the man prompted Ismael to spin on his foot and fire one last blast of heat from his palm into the mans torso, but the sight the crew saw brought them all to an anguished chorus of screams and shouts. A blade of light coming right from the Captain's hand had pierced through Ismael's chest, stabbing through his heart.

The Captain stood with a smirk, having taken care of the ferocious thorn in his side. But Ismael was not one to go out so simply - he chuckled at the man while feeling a roaring inferno build within the very heart that stood skewered by the magical blade the enemy captain held. If Ismael was to fall here - it would be on his own terms. He made a gesture that few caught - ushering his newly found friends to back off. Tanithil, with regret in his heart, swiftly steered the ship away. As the others began to berate and shout their disagreements, an intense barrage of crackling pops filled their ears. It was as if an entire crate of fireworks began to go off all at once - as Ismael took every once of magical energy he had within him and localized it right into the very spot the sword had stabbed him. A raging inferno of fire unlike any the Saltrunner had ever seen shot up into the air and consumed Ismael, the Captain, and what remained of the enemy ship.

There was no body to recover, no loot to be plundered, no victory shanties to be sung. There was only the dreadful silence that followed for hours after the fight had ended. Tanithil let someone else steer the ship for awhile, and walked shelter himself in the Captain's Quarters for the remainder of the trip. As the days passed - more terrifying news of the death of the water human Zorra had reached the crew on its transponder. Another bit of sad news for the rebellion had driven the crew to a new low of morale - and the ship sailed its course until they finally found a small fishing village on the edge of the desert, where the ship had docked and sat patiently while Tanithil gathered his thoughts and planned for what exactly they would do next.

Rest in Peace, Ismael - You were a blazing beacon of hope that we so desperately needed. We hope your brightness can bring some security to those in another life. But for now...rest soldier, you've earned it.

A full day had passed since the ship had docked - the eerie silence from the stand-in Captain had begun to put the crew on edge. Within the confines of his quarters, Tanithil had been self-reflecting - and dealing with emotional toll and responsibility of losing such an important person not only to himself, but to the entire fate of Avalia. His home depended on these chosen few to make it to their destination, and he had failed in his task. But it would seem that his role in the war was not over - a signal from King Vaeril himself had informed Tanithil of his new charge - a human with attunement to the element of wind by the name of Jun and his beast-kin companion Zion.

It would seem that his failure, while taxing to the cause, was not enough to dissuade the King from entrusting the Saltrunner once more. The dark elf sighed and took a moment to compose himself before nodding at the transmission - signaling his accepting of the request. Avali was still his home, and there was still a fight to win.

Tanithil changed his clothes, washed his face, and came out of the doors with a slight squint in his eyes as the natural sun temporarily blinded him. He quickly strode to the helm of the ship and turned to face his likely concerned crew.

"Look, I know some of ya may be worried 'bout me health and how ... recent events may impact our journey. I am here to say that we won't be jus' throwin' in the towel after we get our arses kicked one time. We all know we are much too stubborn to give out after one failure. So I ask ye to have faith in me and to stick with me through this dark time. We's all gots a place to fight in this war - and I hope we can all do our part in securing the future of the country - or perhaps whatever loot we can find along the way if that is yer fancy." Tanithil delivered his last line with a smirk.

"But! For now we will be taking on a new charge by the name of Jun - and his dear lion friend Zion. Jun is one of the "chosen few" we all 'ave heard so much about - and his proper talent is wind. See to it his initiation is smooth and make 'im feel at home. I hear he's a twitchy fella so don't try to scare him too much - ya hear?" His eyes glanced at some of the more playful bunch of the crew.

"I'll 'ave a chat with the dockmaster and figure out our situation for keepin' the ship at port. Once that is settled then we our gonna have ourselves a treasure hunt! We came all the way out here to this fuckin' sandbox, we may as well finish what we started..." Tanithil sighed and began to step down towards the plank that led from the ship to the docks below. As he approached the two figures at the docks matching the description he was given - he smiled and put out a hand towards the pair in a form of a proper greeting.

"Well well! Look who we have 'ere. Fancy to meet yas - Zion and Jun I presume?"
