Time: Morning
Location: Camp of the misfits
Interaction: @princess Mari, @Apex Sunburn Scathael, FIVE @shiningsector

In the time that had passed since acquiring Scathael and his services, events played out in a way Thraash was unfortunately somewhat familiar with. It had appeared that their kingdom quit being afraid of rearing its ugly side of its face. However, the dragonborn found the attack on the nearby village far more heavy-handed than usual from what Mari and Scathael decribed. The thought of knowing the objective was to leave no survivors disgusted him and reminded Thraash why he didn’t mind making the kingdom suffer. Normally, he would complain about his partnership with Mari quickly growing to him being part of a group, but he refrained, considering Scathael and his plus-one lost their home.

Besides mulling over the village, Thraash took the day to forage for some more berries and play what he claimed to be the idle background music for the camp. When he wasn’t doing either of those activities, he’d silently watch Scathael work on Five while eating any leftovers he could grab from something Aerilyn fixed up earlier.

During this very morning, the dragonborn felt a tingling in his scales. It was about time he engaged in some action though he wasn’t sure that would entail. There was the bounty the group had originally planned to complete but there was also the desire to make moves against the kingdom. Decisions, decisions… he considered his available actions while occasionally looking toward breakfast. Mari and Scathael managed to pull his attention if only for a moment.

“Scathael, you got yourself a big fuckin' problem. Mari... is only quiet when she’s doing anything but talking. We’re just gonna have two pissed elves and breakfast that couldn’t be cooked any sooner... P.S. Hurry it up, Ears.” He shrugged with his back against a large sturdy tree.

Time: During the Hop, Skip, and Skadaddle

Welcome to North Pass

Ehem! Errhem! Perfect. I think the best way to help in summing up these days is by just having me summarize the most notable events from my very own perspective- I mean as an unbiased narrator. Mhm, yes. So… Let’s begin! Cue the music!

The morning following a night filled with flights of romances, the beginnings of a master and student, and a meeting of man and machine brought in the biting chill of the north to the Righteous Tern’s occupants and the first sighting of the group’s destination. In the time it took to arrive at North Pass, the group surprisingly ate breakfast together, keeping up the Luumineer tradition of eating big meals amongst each other 😉. It was during breakfast when Bardulf introduced Masako, a warforged of elegant design to the others. She was met with warm greetings… though, can that be said with how cold it was? And isn’t she not capable of feeling warmth in the first place???

Anyway, Masako shared her desire to find two younglings who were very dear to her. The sympathetic elf that Mister Luum invited the lonely porcelain-plated woman into their group. It was sort of quid quo pro if you peel it down to the root. She needed to not look like a warforged that was up for grabs for slavery while traveling, and the group needed a warforged that was up for grabs for slavery while traveling… … … …

“LANDFAAAAALL!” This is what Mister Luum wished the captain of the ship would have shouted but instead, he made sure the odd group of adventurers exited the ship promptly before waving the Righteous Tern off. The group now counted nearly a dozen members! Bardulf, Brigitte, Bowyn, Rue, Zeva, Starfire, Raze, and Masako. In time the Luumineers could have possibly formed into a small army, but King Zanithel’s broadcast displayed over the town the group entered. The dead human sent shock and chills through every member of the Luumineers! The thought of Bardulf being murdered, dragged to the king, and displayed for all to see- for all to see Mister Luum’s FAILURE to protect him was nothing but cancerous nightmare fuel!

The grim news only served as a motivator for the Lumineers to secure an appropriate living space. The cottage was of simple design and located at the far northwest corner of the North Pass settlement but was able to house the entire group for an affordable price. Sure, no one had the luxury of keeping a room or even a bed to themselves BUT they were warm and in each other’s company. Anyone needing or desiring additional equipment was able to travel into town to acquire such necessities.

It was Mister Luum who was thoughtfully decisive in approving Rue’s idea of planning a meeting that would lay out the groups’ objectives considering the threat toward their group, especially Bardulf and Mister Luum being heightened. It made the most sense for the meeting to take place right after breakfast to consider the coffee and tea drinkers.

Time: Breakfast
Location: Luumineer Cottage, North Pass
Interaction: Zeva @Pink Khione Bardulf @Lava Alckon, Rue @Potter, Bowyn @Helo, Brigitte, Masako @dreamingflowers

Mister Luum seated himself cross-legged on a quilt within the larger room of the cottage with Brigitte extremely close to his side.

“Brigitte, We… hmm. You should take the notes while I do the talking.”

“Agreed Mister Luum. I’ll need ta’ grab some o’ ma’ things from ma’ bag.” With that, Brigitte left Mister Luum’s side and tried to dig for her writing utensils.

“While Brigitte finds her things, I think I should make the recommendation to split responsibilities between us. Literally, split! Three and three! Maybe do two shifts or something. Just an idea of course. But I believe the big things we need to focus on is acquiring amas, power, and respect above all else.” Mister Luum nodded to the others in affirmation. “Amas to keep this roof over our head and food in our bellies. Power is something we can only get through training. And that means everyone, except maybe me... I have to supervise as you all know. As for respect…” Mister Luum furrowed his brow seriously as he looked at every member of his group. “Everything we do here matters, especially with our enemies really looking for us. Don’t make the wrong people mad, keep the right people happy, and don’t stand out too much…"

Menzai Isanami

Time:2 days later; Morning

Gaurav

The stoic wolf quietly sat at the dining table, the chatter, much like the mood had been low. The somber, soft rain outside occurred with poignant timing.

Two days have passed and things have not been pleasant in the slightest. The incident from the other night; a nightmare placed aside, though the events of the following day proved no better.

Leaving Menzai at the table, but out of familial obligation, his plate sitting uneaten saved for a single bite of toast, done to keep from worrying the other diners. And even that had proven too much for his current overly sensitive appetite. More precisely to say he had none.

Or at least, that had been yesterday; this morning, however, everything seemed repulsed him. Whether it be sight, sound or smells, like the freshly cooked meal his mother and Phia put so much effort into for them all, the sweetly scented flowers and fruits, the clinking and clattering of utensils or cups. The low chatter from whatever brief conversation that was had during this dreary morning.

Sickening. All of it, for each that he looked at, would only gain him glimpses and flashes of the execution. The acrid pools of blood drowning his senses, netting another revulsion in the pit of his stomach. A stench he was well accustomed to and normally would be unbothered, but what he witnessed and the fears that came about that recording.

A viewing kept private for the elders and select few eyes; appropriately decided with the village already narrowly avoiding an attack just days prior. He, much like his father knew of its contents, and it was one Menzai both detested and regretted, yet his oath left him no choice but to bear witness.

And now, much as the brothers, who for their own understandable reasons struggled to look at or talk to comfortably, was now shared by the wolf. A cruel irony and one he could not escape; being their teacher and having to observe them through training and such.

Through it all, Menzai could only picture them sharing Zora’s fate. Even as they sit at the table now, eating and jesting, to him they appear misshapen..broken. And not only them, but all the humans.

Averting his gaze gave him no comfort nor escape as their scents were a constant, unavoidable reminder that only made it more real; a boon to his canine senses in such circumstances. It was by no fault on their end.

There was seldom any comfort at this table or even in his own home. For just as it was difficult to see the brothers, his parents served no better.

The two, who did their best to be their usual hospitable selves, were struggling, his mother particularly so. The incident was still all too fresh in his mind; mother’s sorrowful, yet thankful wail at learning her son’s fate reverberated in his head at random times. A painful and shameful reminder that burned more harshly from personal reasons.

Then there were the fairy siblings. His horrible handling of that night’s situation and the request, which the two have so far, kindly agreed and kept. The wolf was grateful for this, though it made none of it easier and it greatly saddened him that he allowed his relationship with Phia’s blood family to start so poorly.

No matter where he looked; Menzai would merely see those currently in some form of conflict.

Trapped. In a room, surrounded by judging eyes, the reek of blood permeating from them and everything.

Never had he cursed a candle’s brightness; illuminating their faces. Reminding him.

And just as his appetite went, so too did his desire to sleep. The onslaught of nightmares made sure of that.

All these thoughts, fears and worries plagued Menzai’s exhausted mind, leaving him little else but to stare into his cup of water. Only there could he avoid their gazes, instead seeing his reflection.

Staring down at the mostly smooth surface, a visage stared back, those violet eyes normally sharp looked faded and a bit glazed over while heavy shadows contrasted starkly against the nearly sickly pale complexion.

The sight of his own disheveled visage staring back, the only distraction he had and as his mind filled with questions and uncertainties to the point of flooding, the realization came that this place..his home no longer felt…right.

His home. A place once of safety and comfort, now felt suffocating and small. It was then that he would take notice of the shadows. Like mere flickering wisps as first, but each passing secondly seemed to grow and envelope the room, almost as if a living mass.

Even with the crackling flames, the shadows encroached, swallowing up the surroundings slowly. Masses of thick tar like ink dripping and oozing across the table, down the floors. Eventually spilling over those surrounded by the table.

Phia banged her spoon over and over on the table with an enthusiasm that bordered on excessive, effectively halting all conversation in its tracks

A familiar raspy laugh started alongside a sudden pounding sound his head, his reflection rippling as the world around him was being swallowed up. With each pound heard had the laugh become harsher and louder and constricted his breathing more and more until he felt like his chest and ears were going to explode when-

"I have an idea."

Phia's words pulled him from the mental storm that had threatened to engulf him as his breathing returned to him. With it, shortly came recognition; remembering that they were merely eating breakfast.

Remembering as well that there was one at this table he could bring himself to look at. For while faces of those around him carried those wisps of shadows, Phia's alone shone bright like the candle, and much like the small fire, it was her trying to lift up the mood.

He would offer a smile were that he had the strength to or actual reason to do so. Still, he was thankful for any reason to not be left in his mind, where only confusion reigned.

"I think we should bring the fliers we made to River Fairy Kingdom to help Cyrus find his family. There are many fairies there, and rumor has it they have riverfruit slushes." Phia had longed to visit there more often, only successfully sneaking over there once or twice. Menzai always dragged her back and she had never been certain why. Nonetheless, her proposal hung in the air. Her eyes sparkled with anticipation as she continued, "Plus, Dante and Darius have been putting in so much effort during training sessions lately. It's high time we showed them a bit of fun."

Listening as the excitable Fair detailed her idea with an enthusiasm perplexing to have in this current mood. Seeing her speak confidently was uplifting.

The wolf spent the next minute doing some contemplating, his right forefinger gently tapping his cup at intervals as he did so. The idea of venturing to the fairy kingdom following the execution did not sit well with Menzai in the slightest.

" Hm, yes I suppose-" Cutting short as his voice came out rough; only now realizing just how badly parched his throat was leaving him needing to take a sip." Apologies, mhm. As I was saying, perhaps it is time we, as Phia suggests, pay a visit to the fairy kingdom. There, perhaps we may be able to help our guests." Motioning in their direction as he stated so.

His attention then turning to Dante and Darius as he thought over what Phia said regarding their training. Said training had become more intense, made harder by the banning of footwear and socks. As they were earth mages, Menzai sought to help improve their connection to the planet and to toughen their soles. As with the looming threat now hovering all the more, meant their growth needed to improve.

And training alone was not enough. They needed to gain experience that this forest, while could offer would be too slow and each passing day made the risks of attacks to the village all the more feasible.

As much as he wished to keep them all in Gaurav where they could be safe, it would only ever be temporary, just as it is keeping the full extent of the recording from the group. That, he knew keeping to himself would only serve to make friction, but for his mother and Phia's sake chose to wait until a better place and time to do so and this trip was just the opportunity.

Most of all, however, it was simply that Menzai could not feel comfortable being in the village.

He needed to get out.

" And I do agree. Sir Dante and Sir Darius have been making exceptional progress. And as I'm sure our guests are probably ready to set off as well. So I see no reason to allow some..as Phia kindly put it...fun." Pausing to read the reaction, taking note of his mother's excused absence, the sound of dishes being washed coming from the kitchen. A small bitter sigh left his lips.

Clearing his still somewhat throat." However, I must state one condition. If we are to make this trip and with the reports from yesterday, things may still be a bit...tense. As such, I must ask that we stay as a group upon reaching the kingdom, or in the case of separation to stay in pairs. If there are no qualms with this condition and whatever issues that may arise shortly that can be discussed, then the only thing left would be to prepare." A nod of his head, his piece done, leaving the table open to see what the others had to say.

Now he could only hope the River Fairy Kingdom was currently safe.

Equipment:

Was it weird that he felt betrayed? That, despite everything, Jun hoped against hope that maybe, just maybe, Malachi would let him free, one way or another? For a few short hours, Jun had believed he was.

But nope, not a chance. The New Dawn snuffed out that tiny flicker of optimism he'd allowed himself to feel for a hot second and shoved him into another cage.

That's when the walls started going up again, higher and thicker than ever before.

In the days that followed, Jun withdrew even deeper into his shell. He refused to talk to any New Dawn affiliates (save for Zion).

Escape. That was the thought looping endlessly in his mind. Even while he sulked. Even as he helped Zion's rehab in whatever small ways he could. Even when they got sent off to the docks, to be relinquished into the custody of Jun's next jailors.

A great big boat bobbed and swayed in the waves. Was the idea to make it harder for Jun to run? Sticking him on a floating prison with nothing but open water for miles around? Like Alcatraz.

Jun answered the man's greeting with nothing but silence—distrust doing all the talking.

Location: Gaurav Village
Interactions: Phia@princess, Darius@FunnyGuy, Dante@Alivefalling, Menzai@samreaper
Equipment: A pack with some supplies, seeds (in his pockets), a small knife, a mask that hangs from his belt, a weapon with a shifting charm that is either a sickle or a glaive, and a shield/drum with an unbreakable charm.

Cyrus returned to the village only a little late for breakfast. His hair and clothing were still soaked from the rain and his pants were splattered with mud that also caked thick around his boot. He smelled of rain and forest with the sharp scent of zemak clinging to him, strongest of all. His time in Gaurav village had been filled with tension, misplaced bottled anger at Menzai for a situation out of the wolf’s control. An ever-following unease at building tension of those around him, the looming danger. Now his calm demeanor was restored, and all that bottled wrath dangled from his belt. Its hollow eyes kept watch, lying in wait for a time when it could be set free.

He ate quietly, barely listening to the ambient conversation as a warm meal easied the chill of rain away. His attention was caught only by the sound of Phia banging a spoon against the table. As she announced her idea, Cyrus slowly shook his head, but to his surprise, Menzai voiced his agreement. Far too exhausted to argue, he only turned his head to Menzai and spoke in a tone empty of emotion. “If I or any of my family are recognized, things will become very dangerous for us.” Then he looked at Phia, whose joy was an infectious thing, and offered a faint smile. “We must be very cautious who we share those fliers with. But I would like to buy you all a Riverfruit Slush.”

Location: Port Vanarosa

Equipment: A halberd, hunting knife (unless Jun lost it), half-plate armor.

“You must be Tanithil!” Zion’s voice boomed with excitement, he had never met a friendly dark elf before. What an exciting day! His eyes wandered to the ship behind the man, a nice enough-looking boat but it sat perched atop an endless sea. Foul waters from which, should that boat sink, there would be no escape. A grimace formed as he thought about his chances of trying to swim, a skill he lacked, with only one arm. He hoped it planned on staying docked. “I am indeed Zion, and my quiet friend here is Jun the Unwavering, savior of young ones.” He introduced Jun, who remained silent, and bestowed upon him a title Zion felt was more worthy of a hero.

Zion waited for a moment, leaning against the halberd he could no longer properly swing. But Jun’s silence persisted. While Zion understood, he too was saddened to see Malachi and Kenia both called away for a different purpose, he did not want to enter a new team on the wrong foot. “Ah, it is hard to think of something to say when the cries of the belly demand attention.” Zion attempted to cover up Jun’s silence, and on cue, his stomach emitted its own mighty roar. “I hope we have not missed breakfast!” His head swiveled to one side as he caught the scent of fresh, hot, fish dishes wafting towards the dock. The motion nearly caused a fall, his balance still off-kilter, but he hardly noticed as he remembered the one good thing about the seas. They were filled with tasty fish!

The sunlight sparkled through surrounding trees’ leaves, offering some hope through the park tree lining. Several plants glistened and glowed in their beauty, but the tragedy was still echoing throughout the day.

They had made it to Riverport just that morning. Rowan thought a change in scenery was necessary. The open air and sea would be soothing, and moving away from Riverbloom, although not far away, was probably safer in case the enemy returned.

“Sister, it shall be alright,” Rowan assured Aurora. He had many thoughts about the subject. Perhaps, if they had trained harder and been more alert. Perhaps, if they had travelled an alternate road. Perhaps, if they had stayed in the town. Rowan battled these thoughts and more.

Alas, his mind rested in Zara’s farewell dessert. It was such gestures as these, like a stroke of luck — a feather black pen on silk paper, that his dear sister’s wisdom made its elegance known. And yet, to see her mourn.

Words failed him.

Without request or much thought, Aurora could not keep her eyes dry. There was a dark shadow that clouded where Zara’s brilliant light once shown. The sound of her voice was a dead echo, invisible to even the wind. How could something so precious be lost so easily?

“I can still smell her blood.” The words fell from her lips and trembled all the same. Even in the new city, days away from Zara’s murder, the smell of her corpse haunted the air.

“She shall be missed,” Rowan assured Aurora. If to keep his own morale from breaking as he selflessly cared for his sister, he coldly mourned how easy Zara was in comparison to their new human counterpart.

“But all is not lost,” he quickly added, concealing as much hesitation as he could from his younger sister. He looked towards Barrock. The gentle giant’s appearance had come at the perfect time. Having assistance with his distraught sister and the human Vasco was something only good fortune could have brought him. Although, it pained him to think this way, one way or another as he tried not to reminisce on how much more compliant Zara had been.

Vasco looked like some house pet had dragged him out of an unknown shabby hiding spot. Worse than his appearance when he first arrived in Avalia. Aurora had insisted on a public bathhouse visit for them, first thing. And yet, as Rowan resized up the human for the hundredth time, Vasco seemed to have remastered the ragged look of someone who had been screwing around all night.

“Friend,” Rowan spoke to Barrock. “You watched Vasco all last night as promised?” The elf felt a pain of guilt asking this of the ogre. There was no reason to assume a lack of trust, and in all, he had to admit at sometime, that he had slipped emotionally.

His sister could have very well been taken along with Zara. Of course, he no doubt was thankful she had been spared. And yet, she thought nothing of herself. It was not as if they could infinitely summon new humans for their bidding, like disposable pawns, and yet, to know his sister’s limits was driving a sharp pain inside of him. On one hand, he wished she had stayed behind; on the other, her insight was ultimately a demand.

Rowan’s hand patted his sister’s back, the best he could. She was sitting by a tree, just as she had been when the Dark Elf had taken them by surprise. Why she did this to herself, he could not fathom. If anything he could understand, the light she might have seen of Zara had also vanished from his own sister’s blind eyes.

Darius by@FunnyGuy and Dante by @Alivefalling

Fun? The brothers never would have guessed the food they were chowing down would be made fuel for such. The past two days of training had been especially physically and mentally grueling. However, the fault could not fall solely on Menzai since Dante and Darius had been laser-focused on improving themselves. The roc attack was a colossal wake-up call for the two as the ripples of the event continued to distort the conceptual image of the group’s togetherness. Objections and slick remarks were absent and were instead replaced with grit and innovation. Still, getting used to the new ‘no shoes’ policy took a little getting used to.

To the brothers, Menzai seemed quieter and more distant than before, something neither thought possible without outright abandoning them. At the same time, the two still felt pangs of guilt whenever either of them noticed Menzai’s missing arm, so the distance helped some. However, it was that same desire to avoid that made moments like this morning’s breakfast slightly discomforting.

“Yeah, I would think our mana pools are separate….” Random conversations between the two had been the best way to keep things normal. “... Like batteries in a remote! We both got our own juice but you need both of us to turn on the earth magic or if we keep the analogy, the T.V.” Darius smirked before he took a big bite out of a pear.
“Man, why’d you gotta remind me? I could go for some T.V.” Dante replied with a sigh. “But yeah, I think we definitely have separate pools. Since after the roc fight, I was a lot more exhausted considering what happened if we had one pool you would’ve had the same effect and exhaustion level.” He added.

“Stumbling? I would have-” The sound of Phia repeatedly banging her spoon against the surface of the table abruptly ended their short discussion.

“I have an idea.” She exclaimed while waving her spoon to gather any tiny ounces of attention she may have been unable to claim and she had just that. All eyes were on her as she presented her idea of distributing fliers and indulging in riverfruit slushes. With the rationale being the twins having a “bit of fun.”

Nice try Phia… Darius took another bite, assuming Menzai would refuse Phia’s pitch. For the moment, there was only silence from the wolf. Awaiting the answer stirred not even a small amount of anxiousness from the brothers as it in itself would be quite simple. Menzai had said “no” to less so it would come as a pleasant surprise when he finally spoke.

“Hm, yes I suppose-” What he said had distracted from how he said it. The next move was to assist Cyrus and Viola in finding their family members and having fun. Seemed easy enough, even with Menzai’s added condition. To think it was Cyrus as the bearer of cautious words…

“If I or any of my family are recognized, things will become very dangerous for us… We must be very cautious who we share those fliers with. But I would like to buy you all a Riverfruit Slush.”

“Bro, imagine a whole kingdom full of Phias. And even if they’re not like her, just imagine some huge place full of human-sized Tinkerbells.” Darius whispered with a chuckle.

“I honestly just want to see the kingdom itself, the flowers, plants, and the animals. There is bound to be lots, the real Garden of Eden.” Dante whispered back

“Gonna find yourself an Eve, too?” Darius teased. “I’ll make sure to get an apple for you both, Adam.”

“You gotta get ya head checked bro. War is the worst time to fall in love.” Dante replied.

“Come on, I’m joking… And besides, this whole thing is far from what I imagine a war to be like. Things haven’t gotten that bad yet, and they won’t if we continue to keep things under wraps.” Darius shook his head getting back to chowing down.

ᴛɪᴍᴇ | Morning

ᴇQᴜɪᴘᴍᴇɴᴛ | Travel bag with essentials (money, rations, first aid, etc), sapphire pendant, twin daggers.

Zeva was firmly planted into the seat of a wooden chair, her body tensed from the frigid climate. Despite the steady flame of the fireplace and its warmth stretching throughout the quaint cabin, Zeva could still feel the chill in her bones. Immediately after they had arrived, she had stolen a blanket from one of the few rooms and wrapped herself with it so tightly, that the only visible part of her body was her head which poked out from the ball of tufted duvet. Having originally expected a short trip to Roshmi City, Zeva was only clothed in a sleeveless top and a pair of durable shorts she was already wearing.

The morning had been tense. Like ants swarming fallen fruit, dark elf soldiers mobbed the streets on high alert. King Zanithel’s detestable face greeted their group as they disembarked the Righteous Stern, plastered on broadcasts around the seaport and town square. It was so kind of him to explain the situation right as they arrived, giving them enough of a heads up to evade the many enemy patrols. But the dark elves’ discovery of a dead human spelled an impending doom for this group and their mission; even as new to their cause as Zeva was, she felt an unease stirring within her that had not subsided since.

Zeva stretched her hand cautiously out from the safety of her blanket fortress, reaching for the warm mug of tea on the table next to her. Her fingers wrapped eagerly around the mug’s warmth. Through her struggle to ward off the cold, her envious gaze fell upon the winter fairies and the new warforged companion, who were likely unaffected, overjoyed even, by the weather. There was probably little value she could contribute to the team as incapacitated as she was right now.

“Before we divide tasks, could someone perhaps make a trip back out to town to get something warmer for me to wear…” Zeva trailed off; she felt conflicted asking for the favor when it seemed members of the group were still deciding the value or worthiness of her attendance here. It pained her to have to rely on someone else for something so simple, and doubly so to admit that she was useless in her current state. She mustered enough will to get her next words out, albeit hesitantly. “I-I don’t think…I’m n-not much use, as I a-am now…” Her head sunk deeper in the duvet’s crevasses to hide the flush of embarrassment on her cheeks. I need to train more. I can’t let some wind and snow stop me like this! The shame of her own incapableness was turning into a self-directed anger which started to fuel Zeva’s passion for fighting once more – at least, once she got longer sleeves.

Time: Morning
Location: Guavav Village - Menzai's home
Interactions: @Funnyguy Darius @Alivefalling] Dante @Samreaper Menzai @Helo Cyrus
Equipment: Staff with unbreaking and shift enchantment(shifts into dagger), Her bag, Water Purifier, Flask, some shiny pebbles
Attire:Dress, which she decorated with flowers and hung little charms off the ropes, A small antler headdress with flowers and jewels, amulet with Millinia Crest, wooden butterfly earrings, various bracelets

Phia's eyes widened with surprise as Menzai agreed, a delighted smile spread across her face. She couldn't help but feel a sense of satisfaction at his unexpected cooperation, her excitement evident as she twirled her spoon in her hand, "It will be nice to see you have fun too, Menzai." she remarked, her tone sincere. "We are stronger together as a unit, so I echo your idea to not wander from the group. "

Her attention shifted to Cyrus as he spoke, and she tilted her head in confusion, her curiosity getting the better of her. "Is your family important for some reason or are they wanted for doing bad crimes?" she blurted out without much consideration, her words laced with innocence rather than malice. "Either way, what sort of folk should I give the fliers to then? How do we know?"

As she awaited Cyrus's answer, Darius and Dante's conversation caught her interest. "... There's so much of the world I haven't seen either. It's very fun that we get to have the new experience together. But I have not heard of this garden before. How have you heard of it?" Without missing a beat, Phia began to rummage through the fruit basket on the table. Grabbing a handful of apples, she started rolling them towards Darius and Dante.

There was that moment.

The enemy ship was burning, the enemy was finally going down. Ismael was incandescently glorious in the middle of it. They were all tired, exhaustion seeping into the very marrow of their bones. They were all half-drunk from it, the whole ordeal of the drawn-out battle. Their victory was now viscerally within reach. They could taste it; their imminent triumph sent a sharp zing through the tongue sending a shiver right down to the toes. Yet, they’d prevailed, beating an unlikely enemy, making it out alive!

It was at that moment.

Between one heart beat and the next, within the blink of an eye, a split-second change brought it all crashing down.

Down. Down. Down.

Ismael was cut down.

They could only watch. Some saw it happening before it did. Some didn’t understand what the fuck was going on when they were already sailing away.

The goddamn hero, the phoenix who never would be again, the man burnt it all to crisp, going out with a crazed grin on his lips. It’d be his way or no way, even if it was death.

But it was death.

Final.

Irreversible.

A done fucking deal.

What was, was. What was lost was gone. It’d never be there again.

Ismael was gone.

The worst thing?

It didn’t matter that what he did was downright legendary. No one else would hear his story. No one else would care about it. To anyone else, it’d just be an unfortunate loss, a ‘prized’ human being lost to some ‘no-name, backwater pirates’. What Ismael did didn’t affect the fight against the Dark Elves, so no one else would think it relevant.

Well. There was still them.

Arlen didn’t think he could forget. Days and nights after the fight, he was tormented by that one final scene. That indescribably heart-wrenching feeling of being as high up as the heavens, then incomprehensibly, the world tilted side-ways, and they found they were – not even in something recognizable as hell; instead, they were sent careening out into the fucking unknown of who-the-fuck-knows-where.

Arlen was glad everyone else was just as out of it as he was. They all had the time to lick their wounds in their own way. No one bothered him, he bothered no one. No one even had time to ‘understand’ or whatever else, they just dealt with it each on their own.

Then came the news from out-of-fucking-nowhere.

The world turned, was sucked into itself, and spat back out – similar, but recognizably not the same.

They’d be getting a new human charge.

Was this supposed to be a goddamned replacement? Ismael couldn’t be replaced.

It rankled, but Arlen hated that it also gave some sort of hope – because that meant he was fine with it, as long as there was a juiced-up magic powerhouse to give it meaning.

It was too fucking confusing to think about, as he had such violently conflicting feelings about it all. So, he didn’t. They’d get to meet them right away, so this wasn’t the time to be a sour-puss about it.

Instead, he focused on the promise of treasure hunting with a single-minded zeal.

When the two new folks showed up on the pier, Arlen very intentionally didn’t think about it as the crew getting another human. Cause it was like thinking of a person as just a shiny new trinket being there instead of the one they’d lost-

Yeah. No.

It was just two folks who’d join them on a treasure hunt. One of them happened to be human, sure. But that was all.

“Hey, guys!” Smiling felt weird – he wasn’t sure it looked right, but he ignored that. He waved at the new arrivals from where he was leaning against the gunwale. Then, he swung over, clung over the edge for a heart-racing moment, kicked off against the side of the ship, and lunged to land onto the docks. That small, nonsensical athletic stunt was enough to make his grin a bit more genuine, a small spark of life emerging from depths unknown.

He stood up from his crouch, dusting himself off. “There’s breakfast, alright; you’re just in time,” he turned to the demihuman. The lion demi at least spoke. The human looked like he didn’t even want to be there. Arlen smothered a frown. It’s not his fault.

To Zion, he said, “We usually eat out and about whenever we dock. Besides,” the enthusiasm was starting to take hold, “no way to go on an adventure on an empty stomach.” The sly smirk alluded to and teased at greatness ahead. There would be, there had to be. "Oh, and it's Arlen, by the way."

Menzai Isanami

Time: Two days later; Morning
Location: Gaurav
Interactions: Cyrus @Helo, Phia @princess, Darius, Dante @Funnyguy @Alivefalling
Mentions:

Gaurav

Menzai listened to the group in silence, his clawed fingers delicately resting against his chin, as if pondering deeply. Yet, his true intent was to obscure his face from prying eyes. The long haori sleeve normally covering the hand pulled down, the bracelet resting against his wrist.

A battle of consciousness raged within him; at times, the faces of his companions blurred, whether from fatigue or minor hallucination, he couldn't discern. Nonetheless, he pressed on, focusing intently as Cyrus voiced his concerns about searching for his family members.

Menzai furrowed his brow, chiding himself for the obvious slip-up, especially with one of the fairy siblings present, blissfully unaware.

The way they parted did not sit well with the wolf. He felt the need to reconcile this, and soon.

As the brothers received their commendation, despite the awkward and tense atmosphere, they managed to retain some of their spirited nature. Menzai felt a mixture of pride and gratitude for their progress in training, yet a tinge of sadness crept in as he observed them becoming too absorbed in it. It underscored the challenge of finding a balance in teaching others—a task he hoped to tackle when his mind was clearer.

Phia's delighted reaction to Menzai's approval was hardly unexpected, though it amused him nonetheless. He had always been a protective brother, a trait that only seemed to strengthen over time, albeit with some easing of his initial strictness.

Watching the brothers' similar reactions only added to the amusement. As agreement permeated the group, a sense of relief washed over them, dispelling the earlier somber mood.

This marked a promising beginning. Departing the village soon seemed imperative, especially with the escalating chaos, if not already upon them. And then there was the Roc incident—an anomaly worth pondering, considering its unusual hunting grounds.

While the group bantered about fruit slush and enjoyed their camaraderie, Menzai delved into his thoughts, prioritizing his next steps.

After a period of introspection, Menzai cleared his throat to capture the group's attention. Standing up with deliberate slowness, he aimed to convey the gravity of his forthcoming words.

Taking a slow, deep breath to steady himself, he rested a hand on the table for support, his demeanor reflecting solemnity. "It appears we are all in agreement. I extend my gratitude to you, Phia, for this opportunity." he said, offering a brief nod of appreciation, recognizing its significance to him.

"Furthermore, we will be able to further to showcase the customs and wonders of our world to Sir Dante and Sir Darius," he added, acknowledging them with a similar nod.

With the lighter remarks concluded, Menzai closed his eyes, drawing another deep breath, finding solace in the rain's rhythmic patter against the glass. "As Sir Cyrus mentioned, caution is paramount in our search, which reinforces the necessity of sticking together. However, if recent reports hold true, tensions outside the village may have escalated."

Flashes and fragments of the execution haunted the brothers as Menzai struggled to find his voice. They deserved to know the full truth, and more. 'I-' His words faltered, caught in his dry throat once again.

Exhausted and drained, he couldn't bring himself to continue with what he had intended to say. Frustration tinged his clawed fingers as they faintly scraped against the table. It wasn't just the sight of human faces that hindered him; it was the innocence in Phia's eyes that made him hesitant to recount such a gruesome incident.

Menzai's internal struggle was evident to those around him, but with nowhere to safely direct his gaze, he turned his head away. His reflection in the rain-soaked window offered a vague outline at first, obscured by droplets. Yet, as the rain intensified, the images sharpened, revealing the individuals within the household.

Initially, this brought a fleeting sense of relief, until he noticed the spreading inky blackness, tainting the scene. A raspy chuckle grated against his ears, accompanied by unsettling visions of his family and friend engulfed in darkness. 'Do they suffer? The lies? The guilt?' The voice taunted, its eerie joy palpable. 'Tell them...their faces...how amusing.' Or face a banquet of grief and guilt.' The voice's vile words clawed at his mind, leaving Menzai torn between equally unsettling choices.

The window's glass abruptly turned an ominous shade of inky black, followed by a flash of menacing wolf fangs lunging towards him. Menzai recoiled, briefly wondering if it was a genuine threat or merely another hallucination. With his eyes closed, he couldn't be certain.

Upon reopening his eyes, he found the group gathered around the table, everything appearing normal once more. Relief flooded him, allowing him to catch his breath, though he remained slightly hunched over, still recovering from the shock.

Cursing himself internally for the lapse, Menzai stood up, his hand instinctively covering his face as he exhaled slowly. "I apologize." he murmured, his voice strained. He rubbed his tired eyes, admitting, "The recent incidents seem to have affected me more deeply than I realized. We can discuss this further, but for now, I need to excuse myself."

With a nod of his head and averted gaze to avoid their worried expressions, Menzai swiftly departed from the table, hastening to his bedroom despite his exhaustion.

Equipment: A pack with some supplies, seeds (in his pockets), a small knife, a mask that hangs from his belt, a weapon with a shifting charm that is either a sickle or a glaive, and a shield/drum with an unbreakable charm.

"Is your family important for some reason or are they wanted for doing bad crimes?"

Cyrus opened his mouth but found the question too complicated for an answer. Dante and Darius bantered about a garden he’d never heard of as Phia slid apples across the table. Menzai emphasized caution and sticking together, he looked as if the burden of all of Avalia rested upon his shoulders, then excused himself from the table.

“Both.” He answered after a long, opened mouth, pause. “Bad crimes being resistance against dark elf rule.” He answered carefully, and since he was certain Menzai already knew and the other three were trustworthy, he added, “My family, royals of The River Fairy Kingdom, refused to be usurped by a false king without a fight. We lost.” He spoke, a hollow statement of facts without attachment to them.

“There were always plants and animals in abundance, I hope that has not changed. And music, everywhere, always someone filling the air with sound, always people dancing. A very fun place to be.” He looked from Phia to the two human brothers, who wanted a day of fun and hoped his home hadn’t changed too much since he last saw it. “We can only give the fliers to people we are sure can be trusted, those uninterested in aiding dark elves for their own gain.” He said but Cyrus quickly realized this would be a hard thing to gauge.

Location: Docks on the Coast of Dugmaghord
Mentions: Jun @JJ Doe, Zion @Helo, and Arlen @SilverPaw

The silence from their new charge followed by the loud and boisterous cry of the lion-man prompted Tanithil to sport a confused expression. He nervously rubbed the back of his head wondering if he possibly offended the new guy but he also couldn't help but think there was some extra information he was lacking. "Well, if you lot are hungry, you are welcome to what we have. As Arlen put it, we typically just eat either on the deck or out on the dock. Gives us a chance to stretch our legs an' enjoy some fresh air. Oh, right - excuse me a moment lads."

Tanithil sauntered on over to the Port Master - making short work of organizing the logistics of their stay and giving the trio plenty of time to interact further as they would like. With a quick exchange of some papers and a nod from the dark elf, Tanithil came back to the group and spoke aloud.

"So, I figured I'd clear the elephants in the room iffin you lot are fine with it." He turned to Zion and Jun. "Think you fellers can tell me your experience with sea-faring? Have ya swam before? Been on a ship? Dug up treasure? Any sort of anything you'd like to share with me?" His eyes fell onto Jun once more, with a slightly inquisitive look as if to see if the man would speak up - or continue his silent protest.

Bardulf

Time: Morning
Location: North Pass Cottage
Interaction: Masako @dreamingflowers, Mister Luum @FunnyGuy, Zeva @Pink Khione, Rue @Potter, and Bowyn @Helo

Quite a bit had happened in the time from Bardulf's ship journey until their landfall in North Pass. He spent some time getting to know his new warforged friend - ideally finding out more about her curious story and sharing minute details of his own. He offered a slight of comfort if he could provide such a thing, because he knew the pain of losing ones children. Or rather, being forcibly separated from them. The sommber news continued, as they reached the snowy north and immediately there was a loud broadcast showcasing the corpse of a recently felled human. Bardulf's expression remained stoic, but internally he found himself despising this harsh regime that encouraged harsh killing. Not only that, they paraded it as if it was an accomplishment; the entire notion left a pit in the man's stomach.

He would only raise the cowl on his cloak and slink into the back of the group as they traveled - hoping to avoid any detection and gain a similar fate as the water-based human. He could only find solace in the cold snow that reminded him of home - which even then brought its own melancholy feeling of nostalgia. However, as his thoughts waivered and his attention dissociated, the group arrived at their new temporary home. Bardulf's attention snapped forward and he took in the sight - yet again feeling a reminiscent feeling within his chest. For the first time in awhile - it felt like he was back home. He would walk in front of the group and gently brush his fingers along the wooden railing of the porch. "Just like home." He would say as he made his way inside.

The following night was restless, and Bardulf did his best to stay in the corner but the night terrors would make him stir and murmur. Sights of twisted bears attacking the group, or dark elves assailing their new sanctuary, or even the sight of King Zanithel's twisted smile seemed to haunt Bardulf until he finally drifted into a blank and dreamless sleep. Then came Mister Luum's speech.

He looked around and decided that if anyone were to be the ones he would make "happy", it would be this new group of his. Starting with Zeva, who made for quite the eccentric shivering popsicle in her current state. Bardulf stood up and draped his thick cloak over the elf, and with a sheepish tone he uttered out an offer. "Perhaps...I could lend you this? For now. I could hunt some deer for a few pelts if you'd like." Bardulf stepped back quickly and gave her space to accept or reject either offer, and then addressed Mister Luum.

"I can also hunt game for profit. Already know how because of my time back home - and this environment would be fairly standard during our winters." Standing out in the open, Bardulf couldn't help but feel slightly naked without his cloak. The night clothes he chose to wore hung loosely around the mans surprisingly chisled physique. Despite his age, the years of hunting and physical labor did wonders for his body - giving the man a slender yet powerful muscular build. His hair hung down to his shoulders, and the facial hair around his face had begun to grow into a small beard. All these details had been very hidden up to this point due to Bardulf's reclusive nature, but the stark difference in appearance made the man begin to nervously rub his arm as if he felt the group looking at him.

The orc had a few long nights thinking about that battle with the dark elf. His battle instincts all told him that it was a fool's errand to be able to save Zora. He was simply too far away, too slow, and the elf was too fast. But it still hurt to think if he could have. All the possible scenario swirled in his head. Could he have done something if he had spotted Veric earlier? Could he have prevented it if he instead of jumping away, he had moved in and take the initial hit? He couldn't help but wonder in silence. Thankfully, just as annoyingly however, he didn't have that much silence to begin with. Replacing Zora for the human role was this guy Vasco.

He was restless. Spared no gaps between silence. He kept asking everything, from why his skin was green, to poking at the sword he used. While it did the job of distracting him from thinking about Zora, it ticked him off to no end. And not to mention he liked to sneak off and do his own thing. Rowan had already told him specifically to not do that, but who is to stop him. He had already done so the night before, but thankfully Barrock predicted where he was going to go.

When dawn began to break, Barrock headed over to Rowan while Vasco was still asleep.

“Friend,” Rowan spoke to Barrock. “You watched Vasco all last night as promised?”

"As instructed." He lifted an eyebrow above his blood-red eyes. Both metaphorically and literally. "I do not trust him alone. My presence here already risks him wandering off somewhere."

In fact, he might have already did.

Equipment:Sword, hunting knife, a backpack with supplies, and a stoat named Raze who naps in the pocket of his vest.

“Or…” Bowyn spoke up following Bardulf’s hunting game for amas suggestion. He moved around the cabin’s main room as he spoke, scratching at his nose and constantly peaking out windows or watching the door. “Instead of game, we can hunt large beasties and goblin hoards, bigger ama payout, and doubles as training.” He suggested; there were always good rewards offered to those brave enough to hunt down the large and dangerous creatures that roamed and reaped havoc through Avalia. “Then we can keep game meat for ourselves and cut down food costs.” Bowyn continued, he could see little reason for them to spend much, if anything, on food when most, or all, of the group could easily hunt and forage.

Bowyn had spent enough time in North Pass that it was almost like a second home, it was great for hunting, winter fairies weren’t out of place here, and it was always coated in snow. Other than his village, he couldn’t think of a better town to be in. The everpresent cold that seeped and snuck its way into everything, though every crack in the cabin’s woodwork, made his magic feel stronger. The constant embrace of icy chill made everything feel a little more comforting. It made his self-appointed duty of staying up all night, pacing around the doors and windows, locked in a state of heightened awareness; just in case anything were to happen. He felt less lonely in the cold, he didn’t feel tired either but maybe that was due to all the flarus he’d snorted. It wasn’t the cold that caused Bowyn’s nose to run.

He glanced at Zeva, who seemed chilled to the bone despite being indoors and covered in a blanket. “Rue and I can go shopping, seems like you’ll need more than a cloak to keep the frost from biting.” He offered. He’d do almost anything to get out of the cabin and into the fresh air.

Jun gaped as the nimble vampire-esque elf launched himself off the ship, executing a perfect leap and landing smoothly on the docks below. Part of him wanted to applaud the impressive display of agility, but he tamped it down. Instead, Jun took a tiny step back and sort of half-hid behind Zion's broader frame.

"Think you fellers can tell me your experience with sea-faring?" The dark elf asked once he returned. "Have ya swam before? Been on a ship? Dug up treasure? Any sort of anything you'd like to share with me?"

Treasure hunting. Despite his current circumstances as a reluctant passenger on this voyage, Jun felt a spark of excitement ignite within, enough for his eyes to briefly twinkle with piqued interest.

He had traveled by ship before, but only as a passenger. As for swimming, well, that was hardly his territory. He could muster little beyond a frantic doggy paddle before resigning himself to the dead man's float — that buoyancy trick never failed to elicit alarmed shrieks from onlookers.

When Tanithil's eyes found and pierced his own, Jun hurriedly averted his gaze to the safety of his own shuffling feet. To ignore the questions after locking eyes felt painfully, excruciatingly awkward. But he wasn't about to give up the silent treatment. So Jun gave a small head-shake as an answer.

✠✠✠✠✠

Vasco came to in the grime of a narrow back alley, still reeking of giggle water, dope, and perfumed company from the night before. A groan rattled from his throat as he peeled himself up off the cobbles. He staggered around to get his bearings straight. Every inch of his body felt like it had gone a few rounds with a heavyweight champ.

Something squished underfoot and Vasco blinked blearily at a pint-sized fellow, battered black and blue with streaks of crimson. But the little runt was still pulling air. Vasco racked his brain, trying to piece together the jigsaw of last night’s escapades.

Ever since rolling into Avalia, he’d been aching to paint the town for cheating the reaper, but his minders were tough nuts to crack. After several attempts, Vasco slipped their watchful eyes and he hit the juice joints hard, toasting to life with every riff-raff in sight. Fists flew in a smoky haze of music and hooch, and somewhere between a left hook and a line of joy powder, the night had spiraled.

Whatever was in the powder must’ve been some good stuff too, cause the next thing Vasco knew, Barrock was dragging his keister back to their digs. But how’d he end up back out on the street?

A familiar wave of dizziness crashed over him, the world spinning like a broken top. He slumped down and dug through his pockets, pulling out the little packet of powder from last night. With a lick of his thumb, he dusted the powder across his upper lip and snorted it up. Vasco gazed upward, watching the sky run circles until it tired itself into a calm blue.

He exhaled and eyed the rumpled form next to him. Ah, that’s right. The guy was some two-bit dope peddler. They were meant to do some business, but then the meet-up turned sideways when this squirt flipped his lid over Vasco being human. They ended up beating the stuffing out of each other.

Chuckling, Vasco made sure to frisk the unconscious runt of his valuables before he took off. Good start to the day: a workout and a windfall.

When he returned to Barrock, the big green looked sorer than a boiled owl. Rowan was stewing even worse. Aurora was still wearing a long face, down in the dumps.

Vasco scratched his scruffy mug, aggravating a raw nick on his jaw, then smeared the blood off on his shirt. “Yeah, morning to you lovely dames, too. So, what’s the caper today?”

A light elf, who Zion would soon find out was called Arlen, lept from the side of the ship in an acrobatic display. Zion offered an exuberant exclamation of “Outstanding!”, for the elf. Both for his impressive leap and for what he had said. Finally, some good news was delivered their way, they were right on time for breakfast! “Wonderful to meet you, Arlen.” The lion’s tail flicked with excitement, not only for breakfast but at the mention of an adventure afterward.

He nudged at Jun with his elbow. “Did you hear that? Breakfast and an adventure! See it ain't so bad here.” He attempted to whisper but there was little chance that anyone nearby couldn’t hear him. Zion flashed a large grin at the pirates as he tried to pretend that Jun was not pouting about being here.

He turned his head to Captain Tanithil as he asked for their sea-faring experience. “None. Never set foot or claw on a boat, and I avoid swimming. Certainly not a cat-fish.” He answered, his toothy grin only widening at his own joke. “Skills include huntin’, trackin’, and brawlin’ but I think I can manage diggin’ as well.” He nodded at the captain. “So where’s the best spot to grab a bite ‘round here?”
