Here's the promised bit about Korros Tor!

Korros Tor lies in the eastern riverlands. It is one of the oldest human settlements in the Vale, having been founded roughly three centuries ago by nobles houses who fled a failed coup in the Batezek empire in the south of the world. Having come from a chivalrous tradition, the nobles wasted no time in erecting a fortress and quickly began expanding their territory through military conquest. Even today, Korros Tor is famous for its many orders of knights, who constantly busy themselves with defending the cities borders as well as using their might to bring more settlements into the fold. Even though the city and its population are governed by laws, the rulers know all too well the principle that force is the supreme authority from which all other authorities are derived.

Put simply, Korros Tor is a city run by, and devoted to, might.

As for Fate, I have no experience with the system. That being said, it feels needlessly tacked on here. If the goal is "narrative-first", then just keep the roleplay freeform.

I'm fine with Discord.

I think Fate is just so no one goes "I win every time always because I'm awesome" while RPing. If you know how to have a character struggle and fail, or respect it if the GM says "That doesn't work" then it isn't needed. I can understand if the GM wants to use Fate for that assurance that no one decides to be an unstoppable mary sue, because at least that way they can't claim the GM is specifically being mean to them if there's a system in play that has objective rules.

I like the idea of using Fate mostly because it puts everyone on a level playing field giving them all the same amount of abilities and stuff. Although I'm not sure of how it will play out. When you're at a table using a system like Fate, when a roll is needed the GM just says so then you find the result and continue from there. I'm worried we'll end up in a situation where there's an exciting situation then we're just kinda stuck waiting for the GM to let us know the outcome rather than just deciding what works best for the story. I'd even be okay making a character with a preestablished system just to keep everyone even before proceeding to ignore that system for the actual RP.

As for Discord I've never had issues with a server, just make sure there's a meme channel for when people inevitably start making jokes

We're going to use Fate. I want to try the system. Whoever doesn't like that is free to opt out.

I'll get started on the actual game thread.

Is it possible to join one of the orders of knights, even if one is not originally from Korros Tor? @Red Wizard

I'd think so, sure. Why don't we find out together, in the game? 🙂

@Bacon This. In my opinion the strength of Fate is that it is designed to reward players when they think in terms of ups and downs, getting themselves into interesting scenario's, etc., instead of just auto-succeeding at everything and never really engaging with personal adversity. That requires players to be on that wavelength, though. If they only see the dice rolls as mechanics, it won't work. If they can come to see the dice rolls as being little moments of tension, that's when it comes alive. This is also why we (as GMs) are going to have to make the dice rolls count, insert them at the right moments, etc. We won't be rolling for everything and anything. A general GMing rule of thumb in any system is to only roll when success or failure both can be interesting. Else it's just wasting time.

@duskshine749 True, but you might say that about any RPG. Unless it's completely freeform and the players are in total control, you always have times where you need to wait for GM to resolve important story beats. Besides, there are ways to mitigate this. We can pre-roll defense rolls for enemies, for example, so you as players can check for yourselves on whether attacks succeed or not, and resolve accordingly.

@Kuro Might feel that way, doesn't have to be. See above. The trick's gonna be to make the system count. We won't be rolling for every single thing, don't worry, and we will implement ways to try to keep the flow going. But it will probably take some experimentation and getting in the flow of things at the start (not gonna lie), and honest feedback, participation, and cooperation from players. If players are pre-determined to not be on board or to sink the ship, of course it's not going to work. In other words: it's just as much in your hands on whether this succeeds or not ;)

I hope this clears things up, and settles any worries people might have had. Remember: this is our hobby too, so as GM's, we're as invested as you guys to make this fun and engaging. As long as everyone stays honest, I wouldn't know why this wouldn't work.

As for dice rolls and Discord: we don't have to use it. I already linked another roller above. Those rolls won't be checkable, of course, but we can still use that one and decide to operate on the honor system.

please let me know when the IC or character sheet is posted.

A bit of my Elf lore, part of it expanded out from regular D&D - there are the Forest elves, the Elder Elves (mind yourself around them, they're really uptight), Sea Elves (pirates beware the ships with red sails), Cave Elves (darker skin, more primitive and cannibalistic), and Frost Elves (Northern plains, small trade in Amber, very superstitious. Have been known to shrink the heads of enemies (goblins), sometimes bonding their souls to them; as well as build sacrificial altars). Still, most tend to be in tune with nature, and the males without beards or mustaches.

Most elves take a good century to mature to the point they can adventure. Adults tend to move gracefully, and are well versed in music, arts, dance and various social games. While some describe Elves as being cruel, the truth is they're more focus on their own wants and desires.

But because Elves are older than most save the dwarves, interspecies relationships with the younger races are often frowned on. Also, they grow up faster - which can lead to confusion when a half-elf meets elves socially. This has resulted in a bad reputation for half-elves.

Your nations of elves may be different.

@Expendable

Elves are a secretive people, sworn to goodness by the grace of the gods. They cannot die of old age, but can be slain. Elves have superior senses to humans, and are faster and more agile as well. They are however not as numerous, and do not reproduce at the rate humans do. Elves feel a close bond to nature, and magic. As a people, they usually have a neutral albeit strained relationship with humans.

Dwarves generally keep to themselves, wary as they are of outsiders. They live long lives, sometimes as old as 800 years, but are considered elderly at 500. They are short and stout, but strong and tough. Dwarves are often known for their stubborness, focused to the point that humans sometimes consider them humorless. They live in tight knit clans with a strong emphasis on order and tradition. They generally agree to trading with humans, although tensions can run high if the younger race tries to encroach on dwarven territory.

This was established as elf lore on page 2. While I don't want to discourage you, I have to point out that some of your lore kind of falls outside of my vision for elves in this game. Was there anything in particular that you wanted to add to the game? Maybe we can work something out.

We're agreed on some of it, though. How do the elves of this world view half-elves? What's their attitude towards them? The character I'm thinking of grew up in a human orphanage before being press-ganged aboard a ship, so unlikely to encounter elves.
