If I was gonna 'godmode' and abuse power it wouldn't exactly be a fun and fulfilling story would it?
To put it simply, most of the powers are there for embellishment, shes not exactly there for fighting, or is she the type of person that would actively fight others. She is there to talk, and to find out what is breaking the balance.
I'm liking your character for the role she serves, though I'm curious how far her awareness extends. Omniscient? Eyes in back of head? Or is she limited to her physical bodies senses?
Due to her being physically manifested outside of the dimension she was in, she has forfeited the ability to observe where she wishs to observe. So basically shes limited to physical senses like everyone else. (hence why she wants to be in a position where she can find out more about where she is at... e.g a headmistress role)
(Note: Her summons also don't expand her ability to see, she actually has to create a summon with the ability to relay thoughts to her in order to return to her iwth hte information.)
Such Sacrifices have to be made to manifest early after all.
So yes on that note, Illusions kind of work. As well as invisibility spells and things. So playing a trickster actually makes you a solid counter to her. Not that she'll fight you anyway.
@TheWindel Could you define what makes a dark magical girl for me in this setting? I think I get it, but I'd like to have a bit of clarification before committing to a character.
They are magical girls that get corrupted by the influence of negative emotions. For this reason they can draw energy from the nightmares they kill in order to empower themselves.
Yuri at 16 stands at an impressive height of 175cm (5'9"), with an equally impressive physique. She is has an air of "rugged beauty" about her.
Her magical girl costume does not consist of much - during her transformation, she actually wears less clothes than usual, her outfit consisting of a simple sarashi to cover her impressive chest, and a black hakama for pants. Her footwear changes to tall red tengu geta. Her hair also turns from auburn to a dazzling golden hue.
• Name: Kaneko Yuri
• Title: Golden Lily
• Age: 16
• Emblem: Yuri's emblem is a mandala tattoo, located on the small of her back:
Normally dull black in color, the tattoo shines golden when Yuri's strength reaches its peak.
• Divine Arm: Yuri's divine arm manifests itself in the form of a bright red kimono, with a pattern of dancing flames designed into it. While contributing little in the realm of offense, it's defensive capabilities are immense. The fabric is preternaturally tough, capable of acting as a shield for whoever wears it - it is strong enough to weaken the blows and magics of even other magical girls, though of course that is dependent on the strength of the individual magical girl. This defense is not without its limits, however - Yuri's divine arm, differing from her sister magical girls, actually has a set durability. Once a certain amount of punishment is taken, the kimono shatters as if affected by her own ability.
By far it's most powerful ability, however, is it's ability to nullify bindings and status ailments targeting the wearer. Bindings slide off, and attempts to poison or blind the user are rendered ineffective. This allows Yuri to fight to her hearts content. The limits to this ability, however, is that it can only focus on one or the other. Switching between stopping bindings or preventing status ailments takes five minutes of time.
• Magic: Yuri's magical ability is, simply put, the ability to break things. The longer Yuri exerts her magic on a target, the easier it becomes to break - though only for her. Her magic shows itself through golden glass-like cracks that appear on her target; the more cracks that form, the easier it is to break. Her magic can be applied to even metaphysical constructs or objects that can't be "broken" - like darkness and wind, respectively.
While potent, there are hard and fast limits to her ability. Sentient, living creatures are capable of ignoring her magic completely, with the only exceptions being: Divine or Devil Arms, living creatures that are close to death or no longer wish to live, and Nightmares - though it's debatable whether Nightmares count as "living". Her ability also requires some time to work, with the magnitude of her target coinciding with the time needed to make it properly breakable. For example: a small fireball, something like the size of her head, is something she's capable of "breaking" instantly, while a fireball as big as a car takes significantly longer, to the point where it would be easier to just dodge.
Another drawback is that Yuri's magic is single target only, and her range is limited to what she can touch. While she can switch targets instantly, the speed of her breaking-point does not transfer over, and is limited by sight.
• Background: Yuri is a girl born in the wrong era with the wrong gender.
What she is, put simply, is a warrior. Uncompromising and only truly alive in the heat of battle. Despite her completely normal upbringing, she was born with an urge to test her might against others. It started with small things - childish wrestling and hair-pulling, started over some nonissue - but gradually evolved into something more refined, if infinitely more lethal.
She would pick fights with others, if none came to her, she would goad them, provoking them into a temper until she got the fight she wanted. This was her daily routine, until one day, an opportunity arrived, promising her greater thrills and ways to test herself.
When the call to magical girlhood came, she answered quickly. Here was an entirely new dimension of battle, one she had never even considered.
Though the Golden Lily fulfills her duty as a magical girl, it is second to her desire for true combat. Among her sisters, however, she is known to be a reckless menace that spontaneously challenges others to duels.
• Inventory: A journal that she keeps with her at all times. She accurately and precisely records each of her battles in its pages, complete with notes and sketches. This is her 20th such journal.
• Sample Post:
The life of a magical girl was a difficult one, when put into consideration. The sudden responsibilities you were saddled with, the dangers you would constantly be forced to face, and the inability to ever truly renounce the call ate at the beings of magical girls everywhere. Then there was the secrecy – the isolation as friends and family that could have been a source of comfort from the life and death struggles one was forced to face being slowly alienated by that very same duty. Oftentimes it cracked them, wounded them until they either broke or the wound festered. If they survived they turned into something else entirely. A form that renounced all that they stood for. Kaneko Yuri contemplated on this as she ground another Nightmare into the ground. “And that’s the last of them,” she said to no-one in particular. It was a good night of hunting, all things considered, but nothing out extraordinary. No surprise there – it would be greedy of her to think that she could stumble across an amazing opponent every other day. Or so she thought. “Golden Lily,” a voice called out; low, but feminine, and most of all, threatening. “Aah, ladies. How may I help?” There were two of them – a pair of girls that walked into the street-turned-battle-ground. Both wore dark colors, an oddity among magical girls who preferred a lighter garb to represent the nature of their responsibility, unless, they weren’t just magical girls… “You’re in our territory. I assume you’re smart enough to know what that means.” Golden Lily snorted. “Assume I’m not half as smart as you think, so tell me, what does it mean?” Her eyes gleamed with the unsubtle challenge. Go on. Do it. Try me. The younger one of the pair bristled at her tune, but her older partner, the one who had spoken remained more composed. The dark haired girl raised a single brow and said, “It means that we’ll fight here, which is no doubt what you’re after.” At that, Yuri had to stare. Not too many people responded like that, especially people whom she’d never met, and she told the girl as much. “Perhaps that was then, but you’ve a reputation now Golden Lily. A rather infamous one I might add. If there was any part of the rumors that I’d found unbelievable, it was that you were not a dark magical girl.” The girl paused and stared at her, scrutinizing her for a moment before once more lifting a single puzzled brow. “Which, unbelievably enough, looks to be true. How peculiar,” she added as an afterthought.
"You know, sometimes I look back and wonder is it all worth it? Having to commit atrocities in order for the world to remain intact. Sometimes commiting acts most heinous for the benefit of everyone. I used to say no. Yet. Seeing the children smiling, growing up in naivety. Learning to love, sing and dance. That I must say is worth fighting for. So am I evil? No. Am I good? Certainly not. I simply act in accordance to what the world needs, not what it wants. If the world needs me to be its devil, or its angel, then that is my role upon the stage we call life."
Name: Miss Tamashi / Pandoria Tamashi Title: The Lonely Witch Age: 1959 (pretends to act like a 27 year old Teacher) Emblem: A simple purple band around her neck, it appears innocuous, but when activated it temporaily lights up with eldritch writing when the transformation occurs, before slowly fading down after it has occured.
Domination Arm: A rather peculiar D. Arm in the fact that it isn't inherently tied to her transformation, instead it exists as a real object which she opts to store in a extra-dimensional pocket for protective purposes. The object in question is a relatively large ritual knife, ordained with symbols and kept in prestine condition by Pandoria, it for all intensive purposes functions as a normal knife in most cases. However the particularity of this object are known when it comes into contact with magic, and nightmares. It is an anti-thesis to magic, Any enchantment, spell, magical laser beam, summon. Touched by this blade, is forcefully terminated by a rather violent reaction. It is even known to forcefully de-transform magical girls if it impales them and causing their bodies to enter a fatigued state.
Because of the nature of this object, it is possible for others to wield it, but it is not advised, as (in order to make sure it not falls into the wrong hands) the object contains terrible curse. One that does not kill, but brutally removes the would-be thief's, ability to see, speak, hear, and touch, until it is either reverted by Pandoria or until their death (This only applies if you attempt to wield it, not if your simply carrying it). Pandoria is capable of calling the domination arm to her with a simple motion.
The Ancient Magics : Due to her nature of how she inherits her powers, her magic is actually very diverse in its capablities, she is not only capable of casting a wide range of spells akin to a true sorceress from the history books, but she is also capable of mimicing, or even in some cases improving upon, magics she has seen in the field. While originally she was only capable of using magic in its purest state (pure magical lasers) her experience and practice with magic, along with her unique contract, has allowed her to rapidily diversify her portfolio. When it comes to the concept of spellcraft, One must approach Pandoria with caution, because with her skill at magic, one cannot tell what she may do.
Flight: By channeling magic into her cloak, she is capable of flight, doing so causes her cloak to unfurl behind her, taking on a design reminiscent of a butterfly wings. Sufficient damage to the cloak will cause her to be unable to take flight for a short period. A useful technique for evasion and offensive.
Pandoria smiled softly to herself as she carried the empty basket through the woods. She was happy, she had a husband, she had a beautiful daughter, She had what could possible be the most perfect life for a woman in her era. Thank the gods for that. She certainly was no high-class citizen, but her family certianly had wealth, and her daughter was certainly no prim and classy woman, she was fighter like her mother she was. That made Pandoria happy.
If only pandoria knew that there was something heinous going on in the woods. For when she was in past the clearing, and out of sight from the city of Pompeii, she would be ambushed by men, whom wanted nothing more then the simple jewellery she had inherited from her mother, Of course she fought, and she was met in kind by violence. These men were simply here for the jewellery... and when they had sufficiently injured her to the point she could bare no resistance to her, they left her. Running away to leave her to bleed out. All she could do was crawl... Her mind was slowly turning fuzzy from the blood loss deep within, a will to live burned however and she began to instinctively crawl deeper into the forest, as if something was calling to her, as if her entire being was calling to her to survive... she had reached a small grotto... too weak to even raise her head now to see the small lake surrounded by grass as all she could do was lower her hand into the water, which unbeknownst to her was slowly beginning to churn... to shift and change.
Pandoria layed there. Praying to the gods or to the mysterious girl, whom had such magical process over ice... the one that was protecting them from the wrath of the great volcanoe... and fending off the beasts of shadows that had begun to plague them.
She didn't know who answered her. But she felt her wounds begin to heal as thoughts and feelings flooded her mind. Motherhood... a mother... a mother like her? a contract? to live? to protect children... To protect... child... protect the balance...? These thoughts and feelings would flood through her mind like a tsunami, overpowering her thoughts with their urgency. Her body slowly swelling up with a newfound strength, a small band of thin purple metal coiling around her neck. Her hand had gripped around the handle of a knife... ornate it seemed... and as she pulled it out she raised her head to see... if just for a moment. The pool as red as blood, a figure suspended in chains beneath it. She had never met this person and yet she knew this person like a close friend. They were the one that had saved her.
"Tell me, what must I do." She asked, speaking in the language of latin, only to receive a reply that seemed to not come from sound. but was directly drilled into her mind. The images of Pompeii in ruins. The Volcano spewing smog into the atmosphere... and the order to prevent the mysterious woman from reapplying her ice to the volcanoe so that nature can take its course. The Balance.
There is more to this story of course. But Pandoria always refuses to divulge. Note that inquiring into what happened next either causes her to fly into a rage, ignore you completely, or enter a state of sadness. can imply that whatever happened has burned into her an unforgettable memory. Still, she survived through the years under the purpose given to her by the figure that existed in upside-down red sea.
She is the lonely witch, the destroyer of Pompeii, and the one who seeks to make sure the balance is maintained and if the options presented to her leave her with little choice but to perform evil, then that is what she shall do.
There was a light coughing as Pandoria walked into her meeting, wearing a rather uptight outfit, She seemed confident as she sat down with the board of teachers, She was after all in this interview for the new headmistress spot that had recently opened up. Something that she... even in this weak body, would like to take advantage of. Since it would give her a position with a good view of the day to day things. "Miss Tamashi, as you know we have looked over your application and we must say we are impressed." The old wizened thing at the back said. It was a shame really that these apes had to age, but alas, as long as what they lived was fulfilling to them, she could not judge them wrong for doing what they were doing. "You are?" She asked faking surprise in order to appear youthful. They nodded slowly. "Yes, its quite rare to get such a well-versed history teacher, and headmistress material in one package." The wizened one said. The Blonde youthful ape to her side chimed in to congratulate her. She smiled softly at them, a smile that one with class would use to be polite when talking to those beneath them.
She laughed softly, a hearty laugh as she did her best to masterfully navigate through the conversation. It seemed to go through quite well. Perhaps using magic to cheat a little would of been an overkill, it seems this simple apes are blinded by mere achievements. She sighed softly as she calmed down, answering any superficial questions they wanted to ask before handing the paperwork over to her. Paperwork... Labor. Something to do. She was actually happy she could do something so mundane... it was better then entire imprisonment in an ocean of life.
"Thank you very much." She said politely as she got up to leave, gently brushing down her suit as she took the folder with her. Yes. She would begin to work the following week. Delightful. When she had left the room. If one had been observant, they might have noticed a sneer, as if Pandoria was annoyed at how simple the people she interacted with were. But at the same time such a thing would of been difficult, as she was suppressing such thoughts and feelings under her duty.
She was going to be the best M... Headmistress these children would ever have. That at least made her happy. Adults were certainly too impure. But teaching children her knowledge. That seemed like a role she could fill. Even if it was one she was using as a means to an end...
Such a thought made her ancient mind fill with an emotion she had not felt in millennia... She was excited.
Note: Just a simple little thing to add more to her place within Miso city
She whom waits beyond the reality, Timeless and yet bound to time, Though chained by the laws of the world, she watches the scales ever so closely, noting the time where she may return. Though mysterious in her machinations, she appears to not care... and yet, she cares the most out of anyone. Such is the existence she represents. She is seen as a god by some, and as a system by others whichever answer may be true, it matters not...
- You need to specify if there's a default mode for your character's D. Arm of if she gets to choose which ability she wants right when she activates it.
- That magic is too powerful based on the way it's written. That along with the power of her weapon makes it so that she can be the uncontested winner of any battle she ever comes across since the things that she can destroy instantly are what would be the normal attacks of pretty much every other magical girl in the story. As a suggestion, make it so that she can't do anything to magic and specially other characters' weapons.
- Also, regarding her backstory and sample post. What exactly makes her a light magical girl? From what I can see she's motivated only by violence and the will to fight others regardless of context. That's a behavior that would have led her down the path of corruption almost instantly. Unless you rewrite her in a more appropriate way, she'll have to be branded as a dark magical girl.
That's what I have seen for the moment. I'll take a better look once you have addressed these points.
Meet Rania. She will not be interacting directly with the Detention Club, though, as she has already graduated. Her partner still needs to be revealed, though.
