See, the way I see it, if you're going to make a teenage character be a master swordsman (for example), you need to actually think of what they'd have to go through and sacrifice to achieve that at such a young age. For example, maybe they have poor social skills; by that I don't mean make them an angsty loner type, but maybe they're bad with subtlety and don't get sarcasm, they have no sense of personal space, or they're just really awkward around others due to having focused so much on training during their childhood. Or maybe they're poor academically, due to the same reasons. Point is, if you're going to make a character so good at one thing, they need to suffer at something else to balance it out. A well-balanced character is a good character, after all. You can't have everything; if they have to be a master of something, make them a master of one particular thing and as a trade-off make them lousy at most other things. If you want them to be good at everything, then don't make them the best at everything; make them well-rounded, and admit that most people who focus solely on one thing will be better at it than your character, but their versatility can help give them a little bit of an edge at times.

...Went on a bit of a ramble there but eh, that kind of thing ticks me off too really. ^^; Especially the edgy part. Dear lord, do I hate edge. A little darkness is fine, but when it's all just a DARK PIT OF DESPAIR WHERE NO LIGHT AND HOPE CAN ESCAPE it's just... At best, it's unintentionally hilarious, but most of the time it's just... Ugh, do people really think this is good writing? Once again, I do like dark things; huge fan of Berserk, for one thing. When it's done well, it's really good! But people overdo it, or just think that simply including certain things automatically makes things "good"; people need to stop automatically equating "dark" with "good", really, since... Um yeah. ^^;

But, um, yeah, that's the end of my rant I guess. ^^;

On the topic of posting length, nothing amuses me more to see someone who implements such a rule:

...at least 4-5 paragraphs, each paragraph containing at least 10 sentences.

And then I start seeing people stringing all the characters' dialogues together into one huge wall of text dump in order to meet that requirement.

Man, am I sick of Gary Stus and Mary Sues. So many edgy teenagers who also happen to be "master archers" or "master swordsmen" or "master martial artists" and they're all "wise beyond their years" and they're good at everything and everything goes right for them and there are no consequences for their actions and they have no flaws or if they do they really don't matter anyway. Clusters of cliche and self-insert fantasies.

I miss originality.

I don't have a prob with borderline Mary Sues/Gary Stus - as long as they will be subjected to deconstruction (and a dose of mind rape) to beat some sense into them that no one is perfect.

However, if anyone tries to present a flawless God Sue into my roleplay, you're asking me to educate you why God Sues shouldn't exist.

(Note the sarcasm, peeps.)

I just hate the emphasis on quantity that I sense here and there. I could probably post in advanced, given the rules of advanced say "At least two paragraphs, probably more" (paraphrasing), and I can match that, but I notice that even in free, they regularly make posts longer than two paragraphs. I just don't like large quantities of low quality writing.

I like edgy characters. Too much of anything is bad, like everyone being a comedian gets just ridiculous and annoying after a while, trust me when you play D&D boy does it become Monty Python really quickly. I like variety and think that's the best solution. At the end of the day it all comes down to what kind of characters a player likes to create. I do both edgy and non serious characters depending on my mood. I love darkness because it shows the more darker sides of humanity and doesn't get all fluffy, but when I make a funny character I try to keep light unless my character is more fond of dark humor.

I hate that feeling when you get close to finishing a certain character and for some reason, you don't "feel" it anymore. Like, you know you're going to complete it, but something in you for that specific character just clicks off. So, you're forced to scrap the character concept because you're just not feeling it anymore.

I do this all the time. It really has something to do with wanting to do some parts of your character, and then going "meh" at the rest.

Though, I, sometimes, tend to regain interest later, and finish the character.

@Tancuras This is actually why I'm (trying) to run my roleplay, The Accomplished. Rather than having 12&16 Year olds saving the world, it's a bunch of middle aged folks coming back from their retirement. They have a reason to be powerful.

I actually had some people enter characters though that I simply got that 'edgy teenager' vibe from. Sure your character is 750 years old, but by your CS they act like they are 20.

About Gary Stus - Kvothe is okay in writing, but I can see the issue unless it is pre established that your character is somehow a demigod.

@RabidAnubis Ah, I wish I had seen your RP when it got started, it looks great. Glad I'm not the only one on here who feels this way.

Unless it fits the parameters of the game(if based around Demigods as a whole or say a Thor-like Character), this should never happen.

It's the fucking worst, especially when you know you have a badass concept.

Like for me, my character was the result of an experiment gone wrong. He used a variation of Heat Manipulation, but only applied it to water(like from his body). His entire body would abnormally heat up each time, say he got a suit that helped him contain it and would be able to siphon out the bad for the good. Thing is, he has to keep it on at all times or he runs the risk of getting his internal body heat to such a degree that it rises to dangerous levels, like over 150 degrees F.

The thing for me, I was totally behind it, but one day(yesterday), I just looked at the word document I had him in and just was like "fuck this." It's going to be like you said and sometime later, I'll go back and finish him. But, as the popular saying goes:

"But it is not this day."

Word. Sometimes I take little breaks between writing a character in hopes that, each new times I sit down to write, it won't feel like a hassle and I'll have fresh ideas or be willingly to write out the CS in full. Of course, there are other character who are so fully born in my mind, that before I have start typing, I've got them fleshed out. Those are the best

I also tend to do this comparison crap between my private writing and my RPing. There are so many differences between the two, though both are equally fun. Of course, with the characters I privately write with, there is no pressure to create this long and detailed description of them. You can start off with bits and pieces and culminate into a character you truly like. With RP characters...there's usually some spoken or unspoken deadline that you want to get your character in. I mean, in many ways, private writing involves a lot less pressure (unless you're contracted and have deadlines) and so that comparison can really get to me and make me one lazy ass.

For whatever reason, whenever I join a roleplay with a lot of liberal or atheist characters I almost always make either a religious character or an authoritarian. I guess it's just my sense of wanting things to be balanced.

Another thing I wished was more of a thing on the guild was more variety in politically opinionated characters. Like I always loved superhero roleplays with a lot of clashing political ideologies. A lot of people don't like that, but I find it very entertaining and really humanizes the characters.

One of the things that I often don't like is seeing a superhero or Naruto roleplay and the GM wants you to be very specific when creating a character and limits creativity. I understand wanting to have a rp be a certain way, but my interest in roleplaying is trying to be as creative as possible. That's one of the reasons I don't like canon character roleplays.

You know this bugs me a lot but i have only encountered this maybe twice. but i hate Character sheets that want you to go into Too much detail and no i am not talking about personality, your O.C's description or history (so i must admit i am not that much of a fan of writing my character's past i feel it is something that i should be going into in the RP itself) this is going to be hard explain so i am just going tell you guys my tale

so once upon a time there was an interest check for an RP that centered around this family moving to a new town, state, country or something and i was interested in it so subscribe to it then waited for the GM to put up the OCC and (as of the time of writing) eighteen days ago he sent those who showed interest the OCC and having already come up with the idea for the character,

i went ahead and copied the character sheet to MSword then began my first attempt at writing him but as i finished writing my character's personality i noticed this (shown below)

Behavior:
Type: Rebellious, Hard working, loner, protective, productive, etc...
Explanation of Type:

and had no fucking clue so as i was going to ask the GM what all the above was about my computer unfortunately had restart itself and having forgotten to save it got deleted from my computer so i took a break from writing it then when my second attempt came around and still had no fucking clue on what to do so i went and wrote a rant about my problems to the GM and after i posted another player complained about it as well so i thought the GM would change the CS but no he went on explain to me what all of the things above mean which helped a bit but he still ignored my problems so stopped trying write for the rp and moved on

Huh. That's an interesting dilemma: you like the RP but find the CS too complicated.

Unfortunately, I err on the side of the GMs in your situation. They put forth the effort to create a world for others to play in (or, at least, took the time to plot something interesting in a preexisting universe), so they can demand a lot within reason.

In this case, I don't think that CS's demands are unreasonable, especially if the GM already explained the sections to you. (Maybe it's actually far worse than what you've presented, who knows?) You'd probably have to hash it out even further with your GM in the OOC or PMs if you still really want to join the RP but find the CS too difficult or confusing to complete.

In a more general instance, if there was an CS format that confused me, I would just do my best to fill out the CS as completely as possible and have the GM vet it--I've never come across a CS format I've found unreasonably demanding, yet, so I can't speak much for the situation other than offering general advice on it. I suppose you'd have to judge for yourself if you'll have enough fun in the RP to justify working through a CS format you dislike, but think of it another way: once you pass this hurdle, you can enjoy yourself, so if you really love that RP, then hang in there.

This has probably been brought up before, but tfw you know that someone doesn't want to do your RP anymore, but refuses to say anything, and just ignores the thread/messages sent to them.

Don't call it "spite." Call it sweet, sweet vengeance and run a hand casually through your hair.

On topic, I hate people who play characters with eidetic memories and then forget to have their characters remember everything about some markedly important picture or page in a book. Likewise, I hate people playing characters who are "geniuses" in their respective fields, but then don't do sufficient research to sell the whole "I'm a genius in astrophysics/biomechanical engineering/etc." image.

I'm certainly not saying they need to become actual geniuses in those fields, but when a "genius astrophysicist" can't explain classical physics in-character (even if it's BS), the illusion kind of breaks down for everyone.

I know exactly what you're talking about...

It's just called research and if someone isn't willing to do a little leg work, then they may not be suitable to that RP. As long as the details sound somewhat right it can be forgiven, but having a doctor that doesn't know how to perform first aid is just wrong.
