See, the way I see it, if you're going to make a teenage character be a master swordsman (for example), you need to actually think of what they'd have to go through and sacrifice to achieve that at such a young age. For example, maybe they have poor social skills; by that I don't mean make them an angsty loner type, but maybe they're bad with subtlety and don't get sarcasm, they have no sense of personal space, or they're just really awkward around others due to having focused so much on training during their childhood. Or maybe they're poor academically, due to the same reasons. Point is, if you're going to make a character so good at one thing, they need to suffer at something else to balance it out. A well-balanced character is a good character, after all. You can't have everything; if they have to be a master of something, make them a master of one particular thing and as a trade-off make them lousy at most other things. If you want them to be good at everything, then don't make them the best at everything; make them well-rounded, and admit that most people who focus solely on one thing will be better at it than your character, but their versatility can help give them a little bit of an edge at times.
...Went on a bit of a ramble there but eh, that kind of thing ticks me off too really. ^^; Especially the edgy part. Dear lord, do I hate edge. A little darkness is fine, but when it's all just a DARK PIT OF DESPAIR WHERE NO LIGHT AND HOPE CAN ESCAPE it's just... At best, it's unintentionally hilarious, but most of the time it's just... Ugh, do people really think this is good writing? Once again, I do like dark things; huge fan of Berserk, for one thing. When it's done well, it's really good! But people overdo it, or just think that simply including certain things automatically makes things "good"; people need to stop automatically equating "dark" with "good", really, since... Um yeah. ^^;
But, um, yeah, that's the end of my rant I guess. ^^;
