Gabriel smiled, his smile only growing brighter as the glass shattered to pieces. "Oh my boy. So young, so naive." He waves his hand, and to Hank, the wall would transform into a map. It started as a map of the world, before zooming in on America. And yet somehow it managed to be a depiction of both at the same time. "We did all we could. Vampires were never welcome in public. And mind control is to be used sparingly, for there is nothing humans fear more than the deprivation of their free will. Should your grip slip, or should another notice, they would mobilise their entire army to hunt you down." Images floated past of vampires attempting to infiltrate SOLDIER. Several were in high positions, influencing the decisions of the leading members. And several were killed. "We forced a divide between SOLDIER and the Purge. When the Council first attacked, they broke down all communications. They destroyed the main power generators to spread fear, they annihilated a large number of SOLDIER outposts before the war even started in earnest. It was a good plan, executed almost flawlessly. The humans were panicked, surrounded, and millions were slaughtered."
"You ask how we lost the war. But you should already know. In part it was the Purge, SOLDIER's more effective counterpart. However, there was something far more deadly. For in our attack, we gave them an enemy. We presented a target, and they united against us. They came at us not with hundreds, not with thousands, but with millions. Hundreds of tanks rolled through the cities, entire areas were bombed to pieces to obliterate the vampire presence. It was a World War, but we were the only targets. Have you ever seen ten thousand men march in unison? Have you ever seen an army of vampires drop like flies, hit by so many bullets they were reduced to a red mist?"
Gabriel's map seemed to change. Hundreds of arrows, as the room seems to shake with the stamping of boots. Purge and SOLDIER united, USA and UN soldiers marching through Asia. An army of vampires charged a city, only to meet a hail of bombs. Hank suddenly realized the overwhelming advantage humanity held. There were a thousand humans for every vampire, a hundred million for every Oldblood. And now, their numbers had dwindled even further. Only a few million vampires remained on the planet, less than a tenth of the previous number. It had been a slaughter.
"Of course, we'll change everything this time. Magnus was a fool, as was Lady Mo. Both were mere warriors, charging into a battle they knew not how to win." Gabriel smiles, looking off into the distance. The illusion shimmered and disappeared, as he seemed to lose himself in thought. Then he snapped back to reality. "I have plans to make, and people to meet. You and Mithias are free to stay here as long as you wish. Of course, if you wish to join my efforts, then you must have more than mere strength." He winks at Hank, as Mithias has left the room. "Play along. Be an actor. The poor boy has the sensibilities of a human, ever the noble knight. However, there is a human organization I'm sure you could join. Freelance will allow vampire presences in their midst. Join their ranks, and betray them when the time comes."
He turns away, and Hank realizes he never really moved his mouth. The words he had spoken were a mental message, not meant for Mithias' ears. Nobody would know what was said between them that day. He spoke in his voice, before leaving. "There's an old friend of mine down at the hotel. You might want to go meet him. He's a real cheerful fellow, but make sure you crack the first joke. Breaks the ice, and he's a bit shy."
