I think to sell someone on an interest check, it's really important to seem enthusiastic about your own idea. That means writing more than a single sentence to attract potential players.

Did you know that Dante's inferno is called a divine comedy because things work out for the protagonist? Back in the day, the only two genres were comedy and drama. The only difference was that in a comedy, the protagonist is better off at the end, and a drama is the opposite. So that's why a story about going through hell can still be considered a comedy, even if it's not funny.

Name:
Broken Promise, BP, Boss

Age:
Old enough to know better, too young to care. (that is to say 30's)

Preferred RPs:
I Prefer to make my own, but will occasionally join something if it looks interesting. I'll join just about anything so long as it isn’t overly edgy/sweet, though it's rare for me to do. I don't do 1x1s too often either.

Preferred Roles:
I tend to play adorable characters everyone wants to befriend or proper assholes everyone wants to stay away from. I try not to play moral paragons or prime evils.

RP Conquests:
I've completed quite a few RP's off site, but most of them are on private forums or have simply been lost to the ravages of server crashes. As for stuff here, I'm sure everyone who sees me post in the off topic sections has seen me find an excuse to talk about Danganronpa: Tower of Carnage. It's a project that took over 4 years to complete and I feel pride not only for myself but all the wonderful people who helped make it enjoyable during its run. Re: Zero: The High Council Is technically my first, but it was just something I kind of took over and ended up ending the story after just six months. It finished, but eh...

Last RP I finished was Symphony of Espers which turned out pretty good.

RP's in progress:
For some reason I can't seem to stay away from Ari's magical girl RP, even if I'm not sure why I'm still in it.

As for my own projects, I'm doing Symphony on High to continue the gigachad adventures of the espers in Pax Septimus.

RP Graveyard:
I've been pretty fortunate on this forum. I think I joined one when I first came on the site that didn't really do anything, and there are a few 1x1 things that didn't go anywhere. It's disappointing when an RP ends before it can be finished, but I've come to look at them as learning experiences.

And then there's that london magical girl RP, and that dark magical girl RP. I think I'm done joining magical girl RPs for a while.

Other interests:
Videos
I watch a lot of educational videos on youtube. Usually as research for something I’m writing or purely because a topic interests me. I like channels like Tier Zoo and Daryl Talks Games, and I’ll also watch things like Critical Drinker or Literature Devil to deepen my understanding of story telling. Though I also like memes and jokes, to which I’ll find myself watching stuff like Sseth, but usually find myself surfing through meme videos. I gotta work on that.

Games
I have a rather long history of playing virtually every platformer to come into existence during the indie boom, as well as quite a few other indie games. I’ve played Meatboy, Binding of Issac, Gunvolt, Cuphead, Princess Remedy in a World of Hurt, Classic Metroid, Warcraft 3, Final Fantasy 7,8, and 14, Left 4 Dead, Shantae, Celeste, Danganronpa, God Eater, the list goes on. What I’ve played is kind of all over the place. I don’t play many games these days, I tend to pick things that look interesting and go on a decent steam sale.

Painting Minis
I do this in moderation. Otherwise, it's a pretty expensive hobby to start...

Music
I listen to everything, save most country/rap songs. I have too many favorites to name.

Personality:
Not one to take life or the internet too seriously. Is only serious about writing well and having a good time.

People to Insult:
Dalton is a Dingus.

Fear.

That was what Faith felt at the moment. Mia and Connie were nice, but they were no replacement for Lotus. They had each other’s backs since escaping from Binky’s lab. That wasn’t the sort of experience you could forge with others on the fly. She wasn’t even sure how much longer Mia and Connie would want to be her friend. If Lotus could be taken from her so easily, why not them?

But it was a little more complicated than that.

Faith needed to be strong. Lotus had called her the true queen of Penrose. She needed to take up that mantle. Sanctuary was something she knew about, but just because you built some shabby shelter over the course of a few weeks didn’t mean you got to call yourself queen. No, you needed charisma, favor, spectacle, the things only a demi-goddess like herself could bring to the table. She hadn’t told Mia and Connie about her intentions yet. Part of her didn’t want them to get involved and hurt. Another part of her didn’t want them to tell her she couldn’t do it.

Presently, Faith was disguised as that blond doppelganger that Mia and Connie had mistaken for her. She was safe here. There were plenty of normal people around. An attack on civilians were rare these days. With the civilian population so low, it was easy for magical girls to come together and protect them. At least the ones that still lived in society. There were less fortunate ones who had lost their homes and had no means to leave Penrose. They were living on the streets, preyed upon every night by vicious monsters.

Faith sat on a bench. She let out a sigh and watched her breath disperse in the cold air. There would be no taxi arriving. There was not enough going on in Penrose that a taxi driver could stay employed. Especially with services like ‘uber’ available. The bench was as obsolete as a phone booth.

Heavily contrasted to the gloomy Faith, an effervescent, white-haired woman in a coat strolled on by, taking rather long and goofy steps as though she were trying to entertain herself. It was only after she walked past the girl on the bench did she notice Faith, stopping with one leg still in the air and reversing her step until she was back in front of her, even licking her lips before Faith had noticed her. “Eh~? Why the long face, Hilaria wonders~?”

There were a lot of responses Faith could have used.

I lost my best friend.

I was supposed to replace Cindy, but someone else snuck in before me.

I can’t get in contact with the rest of my alliance. They might be dead too.

The only people I can rely on are two people I met about a week or so ago.

But Faith didn’t respond with any of those. She stared at the abominable woman with wide eyes. She wasn’t use to people taking notice of her when she looked so plain.

”Well.” Faith hesitated as she struggled to think. ”Why, are you, so happy?”

“Hilaria just ate, so of course she’s in a good mood~!” she stated as though it should be obvious. She inspected Faith with a curious glint in her eye, then as if discovering the truth behind Faith’s unhappiness, clasped her hands together. “Oh, Hilaria sees~! Yes, she understands~ Mmhm~ Mmhmm~” she nodded repeatedly. “You must be hungry, yes~?”

Faith wasn’t hungry.Though Connie mentioned she had made a lot of friends at the rave. It was hard to believe. The thought of the masked girl approaching rave goers made Faith smile. Perhaps the reason why she was so successful was because she tried.

”I could go for something to eat~!” She nodded along with Hilaria. ”Do you know of a good place?”

Hilaria nodded with even more enthusiasm. She had not been here particularly long but she had been around Penrose’s restaurants enough to know the good from the mediocre from the bad. However, it would first be prudent to understand Faith’s tastes before giving her advice. “But of course~! Within the depths of Hilaria’s consciousness lies an ever-expanding library containing records of each and every dish Hilaria has ever tried and their caliber~! Penrose cuisine is merely the latest chapter, and Hilaria thinks that it shall reach its conclusion before long~! Thus, when it comes to food, you can count on Hilaria~! But... Hilaria would like to know what manner of food you fancy, miss, umm~?”

”Faith!” She clapped her hands together. ”As for my preferences, Hilaria, I’m pretty easy. Well, easy to feed at least~! Though I really can’t get enough bananas. I eat them on cereal, pancakes, ice cream, almost anything! I suppose I prefer more, um ‘organic’ food?” She rested her chin in her palm. ”I don’t think too hard about what I eat, beyond bananas. Oh! And blueberries! Strawberries are good too!”

A shadow suddenly hid Hialria’s features as she began trembling. Through the darkness, Faith could see two glowing eyes before Hilaria then erupted. “Strawberries~!?” she took Faith’s hands into her own. “Hilaria loves strawberries too~!” she told the girl excitedly. “Say, do you like Sundaes~? Hilaria hasn’t had one in quite a while~” Quite a while was really more like a few days, but still. “Hilaria also knows some places to get smoothies, or some vegan restaurants if you’d prefer those~” Despite her fancy for meats, it wasn’t like she didn’t eat her vegetables, too.

”What’s with this woman’s fearsome aura?” As fearsome as the woman’s aura was, it sounded like she wouldn’t mind eating together. Not that a menacing individual was enough to scare away Faith all by themselves. Lotus had a similar aura about her too. ”If you haven’t had a sundae in a while, let’s go enjoy one of those~!”

Hilaria cheered. “Absolutely~!”

The two would begin walking but the shop Hilaria had in mind wasn't just sitting two seconds away, unfortunately. The ancient led the way with a skip in her step and, perhaps, was even more excited than she was earlier judging by her humming something. But not too long into the walk, she turned to face Faith while walking backward and posed a question out of the blue. "Does Faith not have people to eat sundaes with~?"

”Well, I do actually!” Of course, having ice cream in the dead of winter was kind of strange. Most ice cream shops closed this time of year because people usually wanted to have warm meals. There was never a bad time to have ice cream though. ”I just don’t have a lot of friends. Maybe two or three. I don’t want to impose on them every time I’m feeling hungry.” Replace “hungry” with “emotional” and her statement became a lot more honest. ”B-besides! Sharing a meal is a great way to make even more friends~!” She took Hilaria’s hand and began skipping in sync with her. ”Do you have many friends?”

She thought for a moment. “Hilaria has met a lot of people recently that she can eat with~” she answered in a vague way, her eyes seeming to wander off briefly. When they returned to Faith, she nodded. “Armadillo, Micky, Sopha, to name a few~” she closed her eyes and remembered the taste of the chicken she shared with the two magical girls. “Meals after fights always taste better in Hilaria’s opinion~!”

”Really now? That sounds like something one of my old friends would say.” Faith clapped her hands together. ”You must be a magical girl! We should transform and fight some monsters before our ice cream! And just to make it a little more special, we should transform with our backs to each other. And then when we turn around, voila~!”

Hilaria beamed an even bigger smile than before. The fact that she was entirely on board with the idea written on her face before she ever opened her mouth to speak. "Hilaria thinks that sounds fun~!" And honestly, any proactive movement against monsters was likely to be appreciated considering how rampant they'd been due to the incident with Dan. Hilaria was doing this for the food, though, so that really didn't matter. "Alright~ Hilaria will count to three, then we transform and turn around, yes~?"

”Yup!” The two girls backed up to each other. ”Start us off!”

”One…”

“Two!”

”Three!”

”I would ride with you upon the wind, run on the top of the disheveled tide, and dance upon the mountains like a flame.”

"Nullum magnum ingenium sine mixture dementia fuit.”

After a surge of magical energy, both girls turned to look at each other. ”Haha!” Faith blinked when she saw Hilaria’s magical girl form. It looked familiar. She couldn’t place where she had seen it, but it was impossible for her to move. Fear held her in place.

Likewise, Hilaria did not move from her spot right away, but instead curiously inspected Faith. She licked her lips instinctively. A sense of familiarity washed over her but she wasn’t quite sure where she might have seen this girl before. But this sort of feeling wasn’t anything new to her since she had a habit of forgetting people, so she assumed it was just that. “Why, don’t you just look like a treat~” she teased, only now noticing Faith seemed to be troubled. “Mmm, is something wrong, Hilaria wonders~?”

”Ah!” Faith hugged herself and averted her eyes, ”I, um, I don’t know.” she looked back at Hilaria. ”I’m just a little shy I suppose!” She looked familiar, somewhere, Faith remembered being attacked by a shadow the other night. What did Mia call it? An edgy knight? Edgy swordsman? She hugged her shoulders. ”So um, monster slaying. I’ll follow your lead.” She wiggled her wings.

Hilaria shrugged. It was weird that she’d be shy considering she suggested it, but oh well. It was more important to figure out where they should go to get a nice fight in. There was an abundance of monsters in Penrose so it should not take long if one was attentive, but they were equally as likely to run into violent magical girls, too, given how things had become after the Rave. But as they moved, Hilaria noticed the girl behind her hadn’t been too talkative. “Hey~ Are you still alive back there, or did someone gobble you up~?”

”W-wha?”

She vaguely remembered something. A dark shape moving at high speeds. A collision. A fall. Then she was rolled over, and on her stomach the only thing she could see was her attacker’s teeth…

”Hilaria.” Faith took a single step backwards. ”Do you ever eat people?”

Hilaria’s steps slowed until she stopped. “Mmm~?” The aura around her seemed… darker, somehow as she turned around, flashing an unsettling smile. “What are you asking, Faith~?”

That was all she needed to hear.

Faith turned around and ran back towards civilization, believing in safety in numbers.

“Eh? Eh?”

Hilaria was certainly caught surprised by her sudden and hasty retreat. Had she said something wrong to Faith? Well, this wasn’t good! How could they eat sundaes together if she wasn’t there to enjoy them?!

There were faster girls than Hilaria when it came to running. Many, in fact. Her sprint speed was nothing to be proud of since her area of expertise and focus was centered around being an immovable object that you could not ignore. Thus, when it came to running, she was rather lacking.

But running wasn’t the only method of maneuvering around that was afforded to her. With her strong, thick thighs and her gravity spec, it was not hard for her to jump where running would be too slow. So, Faith would hear a period crashing behind her as Hilaria made leaps to keep up. “W-wait~! What’s the matter~?” She called out. If Hilaria had intentionally made her flee she wouldn’t have bothered chasing Faith, but this was really confusing for her. “Hilaria promises you that she hasn’t eaten anyone~! Not in a long time, at least~!”

That just made Faith run faster.

To a bystander the chase might have looked like a frog chasing a fly. Faith was swift and nimble, but Hilaria’s powerful jumps enabled her to keep pace. Faith would need obstacles if she wanted to stay ahead of Hilaria.

Their chase brought them between two buildings, each one covered with snow. The path was narrow and there was little room to maneuver. But as soon as Hilaria set foot in the place, Faith strummed her harp. The vibrating harp strings resonated with the metal roofs, which shed their payload. While the snow fell, the fairy attempted to lose Hilaria by turning a corner and running down another street.

Hilaria had summoned her scutum and brought it in front of her, pushing forward and attempting to use it as a makeshift snow plow, regrettably incapable of making use of a leap in the tight space she found herself in. The snow descending from the rooftops clashed with her shield but she won out in the end, powering through and reaching the other side. This did not prevent her from losing sight of the girl she was chasing, unfortunately, but she wouldn’t give up just yet. There were other senses one could use aside from sight to locate someone.

“It’s a very bad thing to do, Hilaria knows~! That’s why she doesn’t do it anymore~!” she tried explaining. “Even if it tastes really good, people don’t like other people who eat people, so Hilaria doesn’t do that~! She swears~!” the girl started heading down a street she thought Faith might’ve gone as she called out.

Faith watched Hilaria run down the street. She had crouched behind a garbage can and waited for Hilaria to pass her. She kept her voice down, and even breathed as slowly as she could. Once she was sure the giant had gone away, Faith crept back into the alleyway and started to back track. That was until she felt a tickling sensation at the end of her nose.

”Ah-choo!”

Hilaria paused, turning back towards the direction of the sneeze. She lingered for a moment but, perhaps assuming it was more snow falling down, continued down the path, disappearing from view shortly after.

Once Faith thought the coast was clear and decided to backtrack, she found that she was mistaken in assuming she’d lost the ancient. A strong gravitational pull snagged her, and although it did not drag her from where she was standing, it made it difficult to move away from its origin that, of course, was Hilaria, who was leaning against a wall, arms crossed and her eyes focused elsewhere. "If Hilaria ate people, then there'd be nobody to eat with," she sighed. "Hilaria doesn't want that. She doesn't have much else she can enjoy anymore, so why would she ruin it?"

Faith groaned. Being stuck like this was terrifying, but if Hilaria had this kind of power, then she probably could have eaten Faith already if that was what she wanted. But Hilaria had to be the person who attacked her. At least, it was the only person who made sense. Though Penrose was the sort of place where little of anything followed a logical thread.

”Okay.” Faith surrendered to the pull of gravity and allowed her body to drift to Hilaria’s side. ”I got in a workout. Let’s get something to eat.”

Hilaria and Faith found themselves sitting at a table in a small place called Sweet Victory. The store had no particular identity, but the color scheme was this unflattering mixture of brown and pink that was not too easy on the eyes. If there was a silver lining to this place, it was that that probably meant people only came here because the eats were good.

The two had placed their orders, with Hilaria making sure she got a banana split. But as they waited, Hilaria seemed interested in Faith. “Hilaria wants to know… why you suddenly ran away like that~” she was sure she’d have to keep an eye on Faith on the way here but that proved unnecessary.

”Well, you said you ate people. You ate a magical girl in the past.” Faith’s arms remained folded on the table. ”I figured if you ate ‘her,’ you were going to eat me.” She lowered her head into her arms. ”You also look like someone who bit me yesterday. I’ve been told I’m quite the dish, but I’d rather not be consumed if I can help it.”

Hilaria nodded in understanding. “Oh, Hilaria supposes that makes sense~ But Hilaria hasn’t done that sort of thing in centuries, you know~!” she tried recalling the exact circumstances of her last bout of cannibalism but drew yet another blank. “And she never did it intentionally, either~! Eating people is very bad~!” She opted against adding, “even if they taste good” because somehow, she imagined, that would probably upset Faith more. “But you got bit yesterday~? How horrible~! Since you mistook Hilaria for them, Hilaria assumes they got away~?” She inquired as she found her finger impatiently tapping on the table. Given her occasional glances towards the employee of the joint, she was eager to have her sundae. “Where was this~?”

”It was at the park, if memory serves.” Faith brushed back her hair and showed Hilaria the back of her neck. ”I don’t remember what happened, but the following day I woke up with a sore neck. Or I suppose it hurt when I rotated it a certain way.” She moved off of her chair and onto Hilaria’s lap so that she could take a closer look. ”You can’t really see the mark now, because my friends healed it all up~! But yes, this part of my neck was all sore, that must have been where they bit me.” She traced the area with her finger.

While they talked the bell would chime on the rare occasion as other patrons came and went. No one paid the two girls chatting at the table much mind. The luxury of the vail.

Back at the table, Hilaria inspected the faded remains of a scar closely, admiring the work of whoever healed it as the wound probably would have been fatal otherwise. She was not sure what Faith would have done to evoke such a brutal reaction from someone, especially since tearing out a throat was something a wolf or beast would do. But a magical girl? She must have been beast spec'd.

"Oh, aren't you a lucky one~?" Hilaria wasn't bothered by Faith's closeness one bit until she found herself almost licking her lips yet again. It must have been because she hadn't had her ice cream yet, or so she reasoned. "Hilaria knows that sort of thing can be scary~" she said, deciding to trace her own finger over it. "Oh, how often Hilaria has woke up with no recollection of the night before and small wounds on her neck is just too much~!" Well, 'wounds’ was an exaggeration for love bites, but...

”If I was truly lucky, it likely wouldn’t have happened to begin with, haha~!” Faith found herself hunching as Hilaria felt around the area. The sensation wasn’t entirely unwelcome, Lotus would do this sort of thing to her as well. She found herself relaxing until the counter person waved their hand. ”Oh! I think the ice cream’s ready~!” She hopped off Hilaria’s lap and darted for the front counter. When she returned, she placed the banana splits on the table.

They were a thing of beauty. A ripe, firm banana had been split down the middle, and the gap between the two halves had been filled with ice cream. A scoop of vanilla, strawberry, and chocolate had been mounded in whipped cream and topped with a cherry. Faith had ordered the “breakfast” version, which was topped with nuts, granola, peanut butter syrup, and garnished with strawberries and blueberries. Hilaria’s split was instead garnished with sprinkles of every shape, mini chocolate chips, and chocolate syrup had been drizzled over the entire thing.

”They look rather tasty! Good thing I didn’t know about this place until today~!” Faith took her spoon and carved off a little bit of her split. ”If you’d like to try some of mine, just let me know~! I don’t know if I can finish it.”

The two dug into their respective sundaes, with Hilaria letting out small squeals of enjoyment just about every time she put her spoon into her mouth. One need not ask what her opinion on it was and soon she finished almost the entire thing, shutting her eyes and sitting in silence as if to savor the treat. Once some moments passed, she opened her eyes and smiled. “Hilaria really enjoyed that~!” She exclaimed as she looked at Faith to see where she was in all of this. Maybe she’d get lucky and Faith’d get full?

”Yes! It may be a bit cold out, but you really can’t go wrong with ice cream~!” Faith had managed to eat all of her strawberry scoop and the banana, but her split was mostly intact. ”I think if I eat too quickly I’ll get a headache, but it is very good!” She lifted a spoonful of vanilla to her lips. ”At least it won’t melt~!” With a sigh, she looked at the rest of her treat. ”I don’t suppose you’d be willing to help with this, would you?”

“OF COURSE~” her tone suddenly picked up. Realizing this, she waved her hand. “H-Hilaria got a bit too excited, sorry~” with Faith’s permission, Hilaria would start helping her finish what she had started, one bite at a time.

Though Hilaria could bite pretty quickly.

”A-Ah. I see.” Faith hadn’t actually watched Hilaria eat her own split, so she was unaware of how fast this girl could eat. It wasn’t a race, but she was certainly eating like it was. Yet at the same time, it seemed like she was enjoying every spoonful. There was something endearing about seeing someone so happy to eat ice cream, but Faith couldn’t get distracted. Just because she was sharing this with Hilaria didn’t mean she was going to let her finish the whole thing by herself. She hadn’t even tasted the chocolate yet. And why was she eating all the blueberries?

As they ate, Faith found herself getting more competitive. She wasn’t sure, but it seemed like Hilaria had the same strategy she did. She was going to finish eating all the fruit before going onto the ice cream scoops themselves. It was true that Faith had asked for help, but she didn’t need quite this much help. She couldn’t just tell Hilaria to stop, both because it was rude and because Hilaria had purchased everything. So she’d continue to compete in silence. Faith’s spoon fulls were getting bigger. She was getting faster. She was even switching between fruit and ice cream in an attempt to starve off a headache.

Finally there was only a single spoonful left. Faith was still swallowing, but there was no point in being indecisive about this. By this point she had perfected this technique of turning the spoon and then curling it to get as much ice cream off the bottom of the bowl as possible. Hilaria’s spoon came in from the opposite direction, and the final bit of ice cream was cupped between their silverware. Together, they picked it up, and together, it raised. It was clear that the first person to get it would be the first one to get their lips over to the spoon.

The race was on.

But Faith had a strategy for this. If she bent over the top of the spoons, she would just end up hitting her forehead against Hilaria. But maybe if she approached from the side, then she could suck the ice cream directly into her mouth. She had to be careful though. If either of them moved their spoon the wrong way, it would just fall into the bowl again. But Faith had abandoned indecision long ago.

She cupped her lips.

She swooped in.

She inhaled.

She could taste the vanilla ice cream on her tongue.

But in her haste she hadn’t realized Hilaria was doing the same thing, and the ice cream was the only thing filling the breach between their lips. And once that was consumed…

”!”

Faith pulled her head back. There was still a little sliver of ice cream on her cheek. ”I-I must anthologize! My mother would not approve of such a barbaric display on my part.” She set down her spoon and folded her hands in her lap.

Faith would notice Hilarai was visibly confused at her sudden apology. "~?" she yet again licked her lips free of the ice cream still on them, giving a content sigh. However, she noticed the bit still left on Faith's cheek and reached over the table to swipe it with her finger, sucking it clean. "Hilaria doesn't think that was brutal~ It was fun, if anything~!" Table manners should always come second to the enjoyment of the meal, and Hilaria wasn't the sort to really think twice about a kiss, especially if it was accidental.

"It was fun to watch though." A vaguely familiar voice would say from the neighboring table.

The two's attention would turn to see Janet and Jenna sitting at the table next to them. Where did they come from? How did they find them? How long had they been there? They both apparently had the time to not only sit, but take an order, receive it, and nearly finish before even being noticed. Since when were knights ninjas? Janet was casually munching on what remained of a cone. "I see Hilde fixed you up with the artifact we lent her. How you feeling?" Her eyes drifted over to Hilaria. "Didn't expect to find you with her though." She raised her eyebrows just a bit.

As the twins suddenly entered their conversation, Hilarial tilted her head. Context clues made it obvious they knew Faith to some extent, but they also implied they knew her as well. "Um, Hilaria is sorry but it doesn't look like you were important enough to remember~!" she gave a slight bow. When she lifted her head up, she questioned them. "But why is it unexpected for us to be together~?" she looked down at her chest, then back to Faith's, then to the twins. Two of these things were not like the others. "Hilaria doesn't discriminate, you know~!"

Faith remained silent untill Hilaria spoke up. ”I was doing a bit better before you showed up, admittedly.” She slid her seat closer to Hilaria. ”Is there a reason you’re stalking us?”

Janet made a face as Hilaria made some arbitrary connection. What even... whatever. Shaking off the confusion Janet would sigh. "No, not really. Sorry about that. We were actually looking for Hilaria and you were here too. Though we did hope to get the chance to talk with you as well." She would put her hands up for a moment. "And we're not here on any official Beacon business. This is just us." She would try and get rid of some tension. Though to be fair that might be easier said than done.

"You were looking for Hilaria~?" she asked. She then smiled at them. "Oh, Hilaria sees~ If you want to eat with Hilaria, then all you have to do is ask~! The more, the merrier, after all~"

Faith took a napkin and cleaned her face. ”What did you want to talk about?”

The two girls would split and focus on each girl individually. Jenna taking Hilaria in this case. "I would love to. I do have something important to talk to you about though..." The last part she would communicate telepathically. Helewisa.

While her sister engaged Hilaria, Janet would lean against her chair. "Cindy wanted to talk, actually. She doesn't get the opportunity to see many people she knew at the moment. You'll understand in a moment why in a moment. If you're up for speaking with her that is." She smiled slightly and waited for a response.

”Oh.” Faith blinked. ”Well, Cindy is dead. Though I’m aware you managed to fuse part of Amber’s soul to Hilde. I don’t know what type of experiments you’ve been running, but I’m not interested in participating in them.” She stood up. ”Hilaria, did you want to go anywhere? I don’t feel safe here.”

Hearing her name evoked only negative emotions in Hilaria. This girl would use her name so freely? This lackey? Who the hell did she think she was? It was enough to infuriate the ancient. "Hilaria suggests you never use that name, particularly in her company, ever again," she 'advised' Jenna. The 'young' woman's tone was a far cry from what it had been. Her ditzy-like mask shattered in an instant. She, like Faith, stood up from her seat. "To at least speak their business is something Hilaria can allow," she explained to Faith, looking then to Jenna, waiting for her to begin.

Jenna would bite her lip. She was glad she didn't say the name out loud. She would hold her hands out. "Forgive me. Had I known I wouldn't have." She would stay seated but would gesture for her to sit. "I learned of it while caring for your sister." She would explain. When they first met her it was about the only thing she would say apparently. "She was worried about you, so we took it upon ourselves to find you." Her expression was one of concern rather than fear despite Hilaria's strong reaction.

The apology looked to have propitiated the ancient if only a little, though the subject at hand was not one she enjoyed. She was, however, intrigued. "Worried? Hilaria isn't sure why she would be concerned. But it’s bold of her to treat Hilaria like a child if she needs caretakers, is it not?" she was much less hostile than she previously was, at least.

Cindy would then appear in place of Janet, watching Jenna. A slight smile appearing on her face. "Would almost be amusing to observe these two court danger were I not in some way one of them." She would regard the remains of a cone in her hand for the briefest of moments before discarding it in the bowl that Jenna had been eating from. She would look Faith up and down. "I am pleased to see you are well my dear Faith. I had hoped to be better received by yourself. Seeing as whom you were conversing I shan't blame you. Your insinuation of the twins is substantiated. They have an odd way of stumbling their way into preserving things. But I am no experiment of theirs."

Faith partially stepped behind Hilaria. ”They’re Beacon scientists.” She explained to her white haired friend. ”They captured a dangerous scientist so that they could use them to their own ends, and they’ve been doing experiments with people’s souls.” She placed one of her hands on Hilaria’s shoulder. ”Well?” She addressed Cindy this time. ”Out with it, what did you want to say?”

Jenna pressed her lips for a moment. She didn’t have much to offer in the way of what Ishtar meant. She did know one thing for sure. ”We were not allowed to speak with her very long so I don’t know the details. She wished to see you again and was rather distraught that she nearly lost that chance. She misses you. That’s it, we just wanted to make sure you knew.” She looked at the floor for a moment.

Her eyes drifted over to Faith who seemed genuinely concerned that they might do something to them. Now she looked hurt. Though they had only had chance encounters with the fairy girl and the things they did were pretty high level and bizzare. She was about to say something when Cindy raised a hand to stop her.

Sitting up Cindy appeared perturbed. This was no way to treat an ally. "I had hoped to simply 'have a chat' as they say." She raised a hand and pinched the bridge of her nose. "I did not prepare a specific message to give you. If I must be brief then know that I intend to honor our agreement with Outer Penrose." Removing her hand she would look Faith in the eyes. "The Howell twins and I shall continue to defend Penrose and do our utmost to see that Beacon changes. I do not wish for our friends and compatriots to face the same persecution we have endured for ages. I have seen the results of others work and I believe there is hope yet for such an outcome." Despite having a new face, the eyes of one growing weary of conflict was visible in Cindy for a moment. Hilaria might have noticed it more readily than Faith depending on how long she'd been a magical girl.

Janet wanted to clear something up if she could. "The soul you were speaking of. We didn't know whos it was or where it came from. We simply gave it a home in a Soul Jar and later a patron used it to create a new magical girl." She wasn't here to explain everything though. There was a pause and in it she stood up. "Anyway, we should probably go. Sorry to have interrupted your day." She would look at Cindy who seemed hesitant to leave.

Eventually though the Lightning girl would stand and begin to step away, only to stop and revert back to Janet. She had one last thing before they parted. Given she missed some of the tension she seemed in lighter spirits when she turned to look back. Her attention went to Faith. "Thanks for helping Hilde with her name by the way. She was pretty excited to tell us about it." Smiling she would turn to follow her sister.

As soon as they left, Faith let out a long sigh. ”I don’t know who to trust anymore.” She practically collapsed onto the table with both palms. ”She sounded like Cindy, but that wasn’t her body. I still can’t get a hold of Nuncio, and without Sammy or the Rockstars, I don’t know if there’s anything left of the Outer Alliance.” She dropped herself into a chair. ”Penny has ascended to the throne, everyone seems to have left me for dead. Save for a few people, and you.” She looked at her fingers. After wiggling them a bit, she looked back at Hilaria. ”Hilaria, am I being paranoid? They are allied with the people who killed my closest friend, can I trust them?”

Hilaria could not help but feel irritated at what she perceived as Isabella's clinginess, but she also felt a modicum of happiness. Positive emotions involving things that were not edible was, of course, quite rare for Hilaria. "Mmm~" it seemed her speech returned to normal as things settled down. She glanced at the conflicted Faith with a soft gaze. "Hilaria avoids placing trust in people since that usually ends up hurting her~" she said such a depressing thing in such a nonchalant way that it made it easy to overlook.

Of course, this did not answer Faith's question. Hilaria tapped a finger to her chin. "Hilaria can relate, however~ It is difficult to place any Faith in those who have wronged you so dearly~" she wasn't aware of the exact circumstances behind Faith's friend's death so it was difficult to give advice. "But most people tend not to cause another to suffer unless they benefit in some way~ Would they gain anything by betraying you~?"

”I don’t know.” She shook her head. ”I fear they may wish to harm me after invoking Gaia’s wrath on them. Those holy types tend to shun the earth mother when she reveals herself.”

Hilaria patted her back. “Then they are ignorant~ Hilaria knows ignorant people are the most dangerous~! You need only look towards the Ascendancy to see that, though~”

Faith nodded. ”Then it was wise to let them go.” With a sigh, she leaned back in her chair. ”Thank you for the ice cream, Hilaria. I do feel better having consumed a frozen treat. I will have to treat you next time~!” A smile crossed her lips. ”Can I have your phone number? I would love to introduce you to my other friends.”

Grabbing her phone from the depths of her chest, she nodded. “Of course~!” she smiled. “Hilaria can always use more people to eat with~!”

After the two exchanged numbers, Hilaria stood up. “Hilaria wants to go check on something, though, so she’ll see you later~” and after that, the ancient went ahead and left, intending on visiting her sister.

Su Tries to Force a Ship

“Just some best girls and worst girls chilling out together.”

— Su Fang

“What would Amber say in this position?”

Su wanted to believe it would be something along the lines of “just do your best!” but knew that “Don’t be crazy! That’s how you get killed!” was probably a bit closer to the truth.

Su did as she said she was going to do. She got in touch with Lily, who likely got in touch with Alicia, who contacted Vivi, and hopefully she would show up in the over city to get something to eat with them. A time had been given, and Su decided to arrive early to reserve a table. Everything should have been taken care of that way.

She was transformed into her magical girl uniform. She was wearing a nice-yet-not-too-formal dinner outfit she could untransform into, but she doubted anyone present would really care. She was meeting with the Ascendancy, as well as Askefye. Even if Su had a safe transformation sequence, you’d be stupid to leave yourself vulnerable for even a moment.

Not that Su felt particularly safe in her alien environment. Everything had an Arabian feel, with clay urns, pointed archways, and lamps decorating the place. This was also the over city, so there were plenty of mystical oddities to make the place feel strange. One entire wall of the building was a mural of sword wielding locusts flying towards spear bearing beetles. All of the lights were some eerie shade of green or red,

”Your table is ready, Sayida!” A blue genie pulled out a seat for Su. ”Would you like me to take your order now, or would you rather wait for the rest to show up?”

“I know we’re going ‘all you can eat,’ other than that, I should probably wait.”

”Say no more!” The genie raised his hand. ”The buffet table is open to your party. Just pay this one time fee!” The waiter held up a coin box with the price written next to it. Which caused Su’s brow to raise.

“A bit more than I was expecting.”

”Then I suggest you eat a whole bunch, Sayida! You won’t feel the same way once you’ve tasted it.”

With a sigh of resignation, Su paid the waiter. “I’ll take your word for it.” She smiled.

”A wise choice! May you enjoy every meal you eat!” and with that, the genie returned to his lamp.

Su practically collapsed into her seat. She rubbed her temple before looking to Helga. “Hopefully they show up soon.”

“Yeah, I don’t think I can wait long with all this delicious food at hand’s reach.”
Unlike Su, Helga was untransformed, and wore a pretty dress with red bows.
“But yeah, keep an eye on the flat girl, I think she’ll be more punctual than-Oh, there she is.”

Helga pointed to Vivi, who was dressed differently compared to her uniform. She was talking to a waiter when she noticed Su and Helga, and promptly joined the two. “So, you seem to have friends in many places. You can consider yourselves fortunate that I didn’t immediately report you to the proper authorities,” she added, sounding just as smarmy and full of herself as before. “But in the interest of honoring the Paladin Seraph’s request, I shall not act on my holy duty unless the need arrives for it.”

A plate suddenly slammed on the table, laden with big, juicy locusts cooked in a variety of ways. Steamed, roasted, toasted, simmered, boiled, slow-cooked, blended, fried, barbequed, sashimi’d and then drenched in spices and sauces from twenty seven different worlds, the variety was as astounding as how visually grotesque it was for any magical girl with normal, basic Earth preferences. Askefye, dressed in the one outfit she wore and perpetually transformed, pulled her own chair out from under the table, the legs scraping obnoxiously over the marbled floor, before sitting down with an audible thump. She grabbed the first locust, its legs still twitching, and then twisted its head off, taking out the juicy innards like one would with a shrimp. Sucking out the juices, meat, and organs in one slurping go, the fire spirit nodded in violent approval, before tossing in the exoskeleton and crunching on it like a pork cracker.

She continued to eat five more in this same fashion, before waving at the others present.

“Don’t mind me. Do the meeting.”

Vivi audibly cringed upon seeing Askefye. “You have got to be kidding me.” She then proceeded to pretend she didn’t see the fire girl, and picked up her own pickings of the buffet.

Su watched Askefye eat for all of about five seconds before getting disgusted and going to the buffet table. Eating insects was something that Chinese people did for hundreds of years, and doing so today was simply carrying on with tradition. Though since people nowadays use pesticides to control locust, they can be dangerous to eat. Though that likely wasn’t a problem in the Overcity. Su scooped some rice onto her plate and coated it in fried locust. When Su got back to the table, she waited for everyone to return with a plate full of food.

“So!” Su had to raise her voice to be heard over Askefye destroying her meal. “Do you think it would be possible for us to get purified and pardoned?”

Vivi was eating like a proper lady when Su addressed her, and she daintily wiped her lips with a napkin. “Of course,” she answered poignantly. “Any corrupted who seeks salvation from their cursed fate shall have it given.” She smiled a bit. “There are two ways of how that can be accomplished. The first is by ritual. With Beacon’s blessing, a purifying light washes over you, and rids you of your corruption. The second method is...Newer.” She picked up a locust that was dropped on her plate accidentally by Askefye’s rampant gluttony. “A White Coin allows a faster and more convenient purification, while also shifting the source of your magic to that of Beacon. Not only can you be rid of your dark present, you can also abandon the dark past that led you to it.”

Helga nodded. “A White Coin, huh...Sounds a lot like the Black Coin.”

Vivi squinted. “But it is different! Like the day is from the night. Do not make the folly of mistaking the two.”

“Beacon’s the only way, hmmm?” Su thought about it for a moment. “The coin sounds interesting, but my present patron is not the source of my corruption, nor do I wish to abandon them.” She glanced at Askefye before looking back at Vivi. “The ritual, what is needed for that?”

“The ritual requires the corrupted to stay still for ten minutes in a magic circle especially prepared for the ritual without leaving it,” Vivi explained with a surprising amount of enthusiasm. “A savior of Beacon is also required to perform the rites, summoning forth the holy Beckoners to aid them in cleansing the darkness in the corrupted soul. The ritual is a tradition dating back thousands of years,” she said, puffing out her non-existent chest in pride.

Helga simply nodded as she stuffed her mouth with a taco sandwich. “Hwh hwyuo mmmghh?”
She attempted asking something, but it was incomprehensible before she swallowed and attempted again. “So what happens when you’re purified? Does it only get rid of bad stuff like wanting to eat or fight a ton?”

Vivi shook her head. “It removes all corruption, including one’s ability to curse their weapon or call forth dark powers. There can be no compromises there.”

“A savior of Beacon? So who’s that, Alicia? The cardinal?” She squinted her eyes. “You?”

"Well, if you asked nicely, I could," she answered. "Any chosen of Beacon with the necessary training could do it. However, it is a great honor to perform the cleansing, so high-ranked members are given the privilege first, followed by the lower ranked members."

"Sounds kind of dumb," Helga added. "It's like fighting over who gets to clean the house."

Vivi's eye twitched, yet she kept her smile. "Your friend here is awfully noisy. Does she have a mute function by any chance?"

Now Helga pouted. "No, but I can make you quiet."

Su patted Helga on the back. “Tact Helga, tact.” Su looked back at Vivi. “It’s just a sound spec joke.” She cleared her throat. “I was being serious though. I might need some time to think this over, and if I personally knew of a ‘savior of beacon’ I would feel more comfortable with the whole process.” With a sigh, Su leaned back in her chair.

She did want to get purified. What happened at the rave was embarrassing. Su was eaten up with envy and would have followed Lei Zi to the end of the earth if given the chance. If not for the speakers blowing up, she probably would have hung around while that psycho fried her and everyone else at the rave. If her mutations were going to come in between Helga and herself, they had to go. It wasn’t like her dread wings had even helped her that much. To date, it had caused her more harm than good.

But there was her pride. She didn’t like the idea of being some prize an Ascendancy member could gloat about purifying. It was petty, but letting them do anything with her was resignation of her ability to help herself. There were also all the unknowns, like if they would really forgive Helga, or if it was even something Helga wanted to do.

It also dawned on her that she had another goal here.

“But you’re ascendancy, so you should be able to do it, right?” Su sat up right. “I think if I got to know you better, I’d be okay with you doing it.” The hotel manager forced a smile. “Let’s start with your relationship status. Do you have a special someone?” Su reached an arm around Helga’s waist and pulled her closer.

"Like I said, I am capable of doing so," Vivi answered, about to sip on her tea when she saw Su hold Helga in an intimate manner, causing her to nearly spit the tea out.
"W-What?" She turned slightly flustered. "Well, as an agent of the holy light, I have been too busy to think of things like that." She poked her index fingers together. "And, well, our work requires one to be steeled at heart and sharp by our wits. In that sense, romance is, well, a hindrance."

Askefye continued eating. She had already finished three-fourths of her plate, and had left absolutely no part of her locusts untouched. Vespers of fire flared up the corner of her mouth from time to time, searing bits of shell or sauce into nothingness. The topic of relationships caused her to give a deadpanned stare at Su though.

“You hoard girls?”

Su was about to tell Vivi something when Askefye found a way to make the atmosphere awkward. Su’s body was frozen. Her finger was outstretched for the next thing she was going to tell Vivi, but her eyes were locked on Askefye.

“Well, firstly, that’s kind of a rude thing to ask. But my answer is, sort of?” Su relaxed in her seat. “I mean, I wouldn’t call the hotel business hoarding. They are free to come and go as they please. ” She pat her chest. “My mental mutation is something more akin to envy. Actually, I have to share this story now. Don’t blush Helga.” She brushed back her hair. “When Helga and I weren’t in a relationship, I was getting jealous of another couple. I told Helga about it, and she offered to help me find a girlfriend.” Su chuckled. “But I had my eye on her for a while. And once she said that, I knew I wanted it to be her.” She gave Helga a squeeze; she was paralyzed by shock, but didn't say anything as her face grew red. “A-anyway! Haha, you uh, looking, for someone, Askefye?”

“No. Heard marriage was like joining the Mint. And I’ve been turning them down like, every week.” With that, Askefye promptly went back to eating, slurping away innards and crunching on spiced and battered shells.

"Um, I assume you mean Mint's recruitment offers." Vivi looked awkward as the girls around her talked about relationships; she didn't have much experience in the topic, so she couldn't help but stay quiet for most of it. She pouted. "Not that I care how many marriage proposals you get." She proceeded to eat her own food.

“Wow, you two have a lot in common.” Su folded her hands together. “You both like to fight, neither of you like the Mint, and you’re not looking for a serious relationship.” Su nodded her head.

Vivi's eyes widened, and she dropped her fork on the plate with a clink. "What? No Beckoner-damned way! I am in no single way similar to a hotheaded monster like her!"

Askefye smirked, smug as fuck in that moment. “Lmao, I’ve seen mentally mutated warrior girls with more chill than the Ascendancy. Ya sure about that, washboard?”

“Did...Did you just say ‘lmao’ in casual conversation?” Su leaned forward onto her elbows. “B-but yes! Looks like you’re both into trash talking as well.” Su smiled as innocently as she could.

"Of course she would,” Vivi struck back. “She's obviously part of the braindead internet generation who can barely grasp the English language!" She sipped on her tea.
"But unlike her, I'm not as vulgar as to resort to trash talking. I merely state the facts, pure and simple."

“Facts? Oh yes, A L T E R N A T I V E F A C T S, right?” Askefye giggled at that, then decided that she wanted this locust totally fried. Blowing a jet of blue flame over it, she watched its skin blacken, and tossed it into her mouth.

“I’m sorry, the longer you guys talk, the more convinced I am that you belong in a relationship.” Su looked totally deadpan as she delivered her assessment. “Moving along, did Beacon get a chance to look into Justine’s involvement? I really think she had something to do with the rave incident.”

Vivi’s eye twitched. “You really are insistent on that, huh?” She sighed, and spun a spoon in her cup of tea.
“We made a background check of the participants, but nobody had met Justine before. As strange as it is, she was not involved in the events there. Still, I find it hard to believe she went there just to dance or see Vi-chan. Eyewitness accounts did mention that she confronted a slime girl there, who was then protected by a magical girl dressed in red. There are rumors it was Veronica of the Crimson Cradle, and she was there to make a backroom deal of sorts with her. Take those how you will.”

Su almost coughed up her food in surprise, but then she realized that Veronica wasn’t making a backroom deal with Justine, but the slime girl. Since she had met with Deni she had to assume that was Eli. Did that mean Veronica and Mariette were working together? Something to ask Samantha or Deni about later.

“I see.”

Su looked down at her plate. She had eaten most of her food over the course of the discussion.

“Helga and I have a bit to discuss, but I think our final decision will be beneficial to all parties involved.” She stood up and walked to the other side of the table, standing in the space between Askefye and Vivi’s seats. “Thank you for coming.” She extended her hand to shake Vivi’s hand.

Vivi shook Su’s hand in a respectful manner. “I suppose this meeting wasn’t a complete waste of time,” she dryly answered, though Su could tell there was a hint of hesitation. She afterwards shook Helga’s hand. “Thank you for this business lunch. It was productive.”
Helga shook back with a grin on her face. “Not as productive as seeing you two together! You’re so cute like this~”
Vivi kept her cordial smile, but gripped the hand hard enough for Helga to wince in pain.
“Keep dreaming, buddy. As for you,” she said turning towards Askefye. “Consider my debt to you paid in full!”

Askefye scoffed, a toothy grin on her face. She certainly had no intention of leaving yet, and was still dual-wielding locusts. “Sayin’ that your life is worth a lunch? Sure thing, washboard~”

“Excuse me, I was the one who paid for everyone’s food.” Her voice was gruff, but that was because Vivi was continuing to behave in a manner she considered unprofessional. “And I’d prefer you not break Helga’s hand, otherwise you’ll owe me something too.”

Vivi’s face turned red from both embarrassment and fury. “Well you didn’t gibe me-I mean give me the opportunity to do so!” She yelled, and groaned out of frustration. “That’s it, enough! I’m done listening to these insults! Goodbye!” She then promptly teleported away in a pillar of light.

Helga stretched out the fingers in her hand, and rolled her eyes. “Sheesh, that went well. At least she didn’t decide to call her Beacon bubs in here.”
We pick 2 this time? Didn't see that.

I'll also vote for Metamorphosis as my runner up. Summer of 20 was close though.

Perhaps I'll elaborate on my choices later. But for now, I prepare for work!
I would love to share my thoughts on all the entries, but poetry and micro-fiction is not something I have a good grasp of. It would be a disservice to attempt to write a review on any of them.

But I did have a favorite. Lepidopterist stood out to me, so it gets my vote.

“I left Penrose guys I swear.”

— Veronica

Mimoku had been notified, his girls had been summoned, all that was left was for all interested parties to come together.

The designated location was a parking garage. It was completely empty, aside from a cardboard box a homeless man was using as a bed. But he was gone for the moment. There was nothing but concrete pillars and peeling paint.

When Fine entered the underground area, all exits were sealed off by a wall of shadow. That was when a white creature with red stripes made its presence known. It looked like a fox, but had the face of a weasel and long ears like a bunny. The creature could have been a Puchuu, but it wasn’t.

”Greetings.” The creature said in Veronica’s voice. ”I would like to have been here in person for this meeting, but distant business has forced me to use this surrogate body.” “Veronica” looked around the garage. ”Unfortunate that Myria did not arrive, I was going to give her a chance to earn a real skeleton key. Regardless, I got into Elvira’s mind.”

“Could’ve just Zoomed then,” Fine replied drily. The silver-haired dame herself was dressed in more formal attire than her clubbing outfit, a cobalt blue three-piece suit complemented by a silk handkerchief in the breast pocket, and she had done her hair up in a braided bun for the occasion. Her red eyes scanned her surroundings briefly, more out of habit than necessity, before settling back on Veronica’s plushie-messenger. “What’s the news though, Vermillion? Mint’s on the move again?”

” The Mint is always on the move, but the situation is a bit more complex than that.” The animal stood up on its hind legs. ”Elvira was working with a few other girls. The most noteworthy of the bunch is Chloe, who is a known Mint agent. I believe she was the main mastermind behind the Rave incident. Most of the other girls work for Chloe in some capacity, save for one. You may know who I’m talking about.” Veronica paused for dramatic effect.

”Eden Campbell. Head of the Penrose independent.”

The creature landed on all fours. ”She seemed interested in using the rave for her own ends rather than those of Elvira. In fact, Elvira never revealed to her that she was a Mint agent. Looking through her memories it didn’t even seem like Elvira trusted Eden all that much. Which makes it strange that Eden was trying to claim the rave was the result of the Penrose Independent exclusively.”

“Strange to do so,” Fine said. “Why would a news agency make claims for such an act, unless they were covering for the real perpetrators? Think Mint’s got something on Eden?”

”Now there’s a thought. While I can’t fully rule out something like that, Elvira’s meeting with Eden seemed a bit too hostile for that. I got the impression Elvira didn’t really want Eden there, but begrudgingly took her on because she’s a big name and, well, the psychic nuke is proof she has power.” The creature walked closer to Fine. ”Eden was also making a fuss because she couldn’t speak with Chloe directly. If Eden joined Elvira out of pressure from the mint, I would expect Elvira to be more cooperative. Having said that, the Mint had me attacking my own forces. So perhaps I’m giving them too much credit. Regardless, Eden made mention of bringing Cindy to the party, and I can confirm she was there. Eden also inquired about Cindy’s location after the rave, so it’s looking less like a Mint operation and more like a collaboration between many forces out of a shared hatred for Beacon. One that Eden led or was planning to lead. Though there’s no doubt Mint profited most from the events at the rave.” Once Veronica was close, she sat down in front of Fine.

“The Mint’s not an organization with one clear leader anyhow. Factions exist within, different debts are owed to different people, operators hold multiple loyalties. Wouldn’t be a surprise if the entity who held influence over Eden was someone who didn’t belong with this ‘Chloe’s’ group.” Fine paused to tuck a strand of hair behind her ear, a secretive smile forming. “Or perhaps that animosity was simply spawned from the age-old conflict between the media and celebrities.”

”It’s not something I’ve ruled out. But even so, Eden seems like an interesting person, doesn’t she? Certainly one worth talking to.”

The dame raised a brow at Veronica’s suggestion. “She’s certainly an interesting character, but with Chloe AWOL and Cindy dead, how much of this collaboration still exists? Doesn’t seem unlikely that, by the time an interview is arranged, Eden will have simply been absorbed into the Mint like so many other corrupted girls.”

”Not all corrupt girls are turning to the Mint. But we’re straying from facts and moving into conjecture. At the very least it was not all Chloe.” The creature eyes Fine’s shoulder. ”There is little else to discuss. In regards to the information about Elvira, I’d like to keep that between us for now. She may have a future after this.”

With a hop, Veronica landed on Fine’s arm and walked from one shoulder to the other. The animal’s mouth opened up and a USB stick emerged from its mouth. The stick was sleek and red in color, but had no other marks to indicate where it might have come from. ”I do have quite the dosser on Chloe if you’re interested. Courtesy of my long friendship with Mimoku.”

“I’m sure he’ll appreciate it,” Fine replied, taking the USB stick from the creature. “Is Penrose really that valuable to you though, Veronica? Not much of a resort, from an outsider’s perspective.”

”It was, once.” The creature’s eyes glowed. ”And it will be again.”

Hilaria & Su Crew

“Sweet gains bro!”

"OM NOM MOAR BURGER OM NOM!"

— Su & Hilarious

The Golden Trove was housing a lot more people, and that meant that there would be more mouths to feed come breakfast time. It was impossible for Su to get everything she needed from her supplier on short notice, so she needed to hit up all the super stores to bulk up. Su knew that she could get a lot of what she was buying at half the price, simply because of the volume she could buy in. But it would be okay if she didn’t over buy everything. Within the week, she’d be getting bigger shipments and everything would be taken care of.

“I really wish I had a faster vehicle.”

Instead, Su was forced to make trips with a passenger car that was older than she appeared. It bucked, there was some white smoke coming out of her exhaust pipe, and the ugly tan paint was peeling on every corner of the vehicle. The rims were rusty, and needed to be filled with air every few days just to keep from deflating. It was about a thousand miles over due on it’s oil change, but it still drove. Su didn’t have much use for the car, and it came with the hotel. So she didn’t feel like it was worthwhile to sink money into it when there was so much else that needed to be done.

“This is nuts! I should have taken the forklift.”

The vehicle sputtered as it cruised through the empty streets of Penrose.

...only to come to stop accelerating a short distance later. With a loud growl, the engine of the vehicle was no more and it rolled to a slow stop. Su would then be forced out as smoke rushed into the cabin.

When she vacated the car she noticed a white-haired girl gazing curiously at her recently departed means of transportation. A finger to her lip, she tilted her head as she looked at the hood and knocked on the front of the car. “Mmm, Hilaria thinks it passed way~ How unfortunate~”

Su waved the smoke away from herself. “Y-yes.” These were not Su’s favorite situations. She prided herself on appearing strong at all times. Or at the very least, not looking helpless in front of strangers. Though she wasn’t very successful on that front.

“I was told white smoke coming out of the exhaust indicated a blown head gasket.” It was all mechanic jargon to her though. She didn’t know where the head gasket was located, why it was important, or even what shape it was. All she knew was it was bad. Though she wasn’t sure why she was explaining this to… “Hilaria? Is that your name?”

“Hilaria is Hilaria, yes~” she nodded as confirmation. She slowly circled the old and tawdry vehicle, paying notice to the faded tan paint and rusted pieces, then looked at Su. “Hilaria wonders why you treat the poor thing so badly.”

Su folded her arms and looked away. “I-I found it like that!” Her cheeks puffed up a bit. “I changed the oil myself… once.” With a groan, she looked back at Hilaria. “I don’t suppose you know a tow truck company who would pull this back to the hotel, would you?”

“Hotel~?” Hilaria repeated back, unfamiliar with it. “Hilaria thinks there’s a few hotels, so she doesn’t know which one you want~” She explained as she scratched her head. “But Hilaria knows a place you can use~!” she stood up straight, then began singing a jingle. “When you’re down on your luck~ If ya just got a buck~ Call a truck~ Travis’ Tow Trucks~” As she finished, she clapped happily. “Hilaria hears that a lot during commercial breaks, does that help~?”

The corners of Su’s lips curled into a smile. “Maybe if you remembered the number.” Hilaria shrugged in response. Su sat down on a nearby park bench and pulled out her phone. Though her head shot up when she realized something. “I’m sorry, I never mentioned who I was. I’m Su Fang, the manager at the Golden Trove Hotel.” She looked at her phone, but didn’t dial anything. “I don’t suppose you know of someone who could move my car by any chance, do you?” The distance back to the hotel was only about ten miles. It wasn’t too far, but it was longer than Su felt comfortable using her magic. By the time she got a wind under her car that was strong enough to lift it, she’d be demolishing what was left of Penrose’s roads. But this girl, she was too strange to be a normal human.

Hilaria walked alongside the car slowly, tracing the top of the car with her finger as she listened to Su’s inquiry. “Hilaria wonders what sort of food is at the Golden Trove~ Is it good~?” She asked out of nowhere.

Was she asking for payment? If all she wanted was a good meal, that was fine. Well, so long as she didn’t eat too much. “It’s where I eat every day. I won’t say everything is a gourmet meal, but it’s good food. We don’t use powdered eggs or dehydrated products. We used to have fish for breakfast, but since no one is fishing we’re making pancakes. With an exception to the stranger food items, everything is more or less made from scratch.”

“~!”

Hilaria became eager when Su mentioned how they made their food. It sounded like eating there would be great, so if all she had to do was move a car, then so be it. “Excuse Hilaria for a moment.” she instructed, taking a step back from the car.

As Hilaria closed her eyes, her form began darkening until she resembled a living shadow. "Nullum magnum ingenium sine mixture dementia fuit.” her tone was deep and had an eerie echo that sounded like she was harmonizing with a demonic being, all while pieces of her armor appeared out of spontaneous shadows and snapped to her as though she was magnetised. When it all finished, a ghastly wail departed along with the obfuscation of her figure and she now wore her typical magical girl attire. “Hilaria will help you with your car for food~” she said in a cheerful voice that was heavily contrasted by her spooky transformation sequence. And having stated her intentions, the girl placed her hands under the vehicle and lifted it with her might over her head. With her raw physical strength supplemented by her gravity spec, something like this was possible. “Lead the way~!”

It took Su a moment to recover from what she saw. She shook her head to return to her senses before shooting Hilaria a smile. “R-right!”

Su transformed as well, but it wasn’t nearly as flashy. Dust and debris kicked up around her. Once her form was entirely covered, the dust blew away revealing her magical girl form. “This way!” Su took to the sky and made sure Hilaria could keep up with her, though she soon realized Hilaria could move pretty fast even with a giant car.

Su could hardly believe the time they made. After they unloaded the car, she was able to make another run to some more grocery stores with Hilaria carrying the car around. It wasn’t hard to convince her when more shopping equated to more food.

“Thank you, Hilaria. That was very helpful.” Su was whisking up some pancake batter in the kitchen. “Is there anything in particular you feel like eating? It’s mid morning so I figured you’d like some pancakes, but I could make you some lunch sandwiches too.”

Hilaria nodded fervently as the sound of a meal after a bit of work was welcome. Getting perhaps a bit too close to Su, she watched Su creating the mix, eager to try the girl’s cooking and not hiding the fact one bit. “Hilaria loves anything with meat on it~!” She explained, then added, “The more food the better~!”

“Meat?” Su found herself kneeling slightly with Hilaria leaned over her shoulder. In her past lives, she had several spouses that would do this while she cooked them food. It was a bit different when a total stranger capable of moving an entire car did it. “Um, alright. How about you have a seat and I’ll make you some burgers after this?”

Mika leaned into the kitchen. “Hi mom!”

“You’re up late.” Su ducked away from Hilaria and looked to Mika. “Lucky for you, I’m still serving breakfast. That nose of yours probably told you as much.” Mika’s childish giggle told all. Su only smiled. “Take a seat, I’ll have something up shortly.”

Mika approached an island table and hopped onto a bar stool. Once she had done so, she turned to Hilaria. “Hello Hilarious!” She waved her hand. “Are you my sister now?”

The ancient warmly smiled at Mika from a seated position as she was one of the few people in the city she could easily remember. “Hello~!” her kind expression suddenly disappeared. Hilaria had opened her mouth to say something but found herself unable to speak as an intense wave of lightheadedness, a headache, and nausea all attempted to overwhelm her. It was, thankfully, over just as quick as it had come but it left her confused. “Oh, Hilaria must be hungrier than she thought~” she reasoned, recapturing her earlier demeanor with ease and opting to move on. “Mika is Su’s daughter~? My how things have changed~!”

Mika nodded and let her head swing side to side.

“You know her?” Su had poured the batter and was almost ready to serve.

“Yea! Hilarious and I have the same patron.”

Su blinked. “It’s not Boteg?”

Mika tipped her head. “Did I not tell you? I guess I forgot. Sorry!” Before Su could say anything, Mika went on to explain. “We met during the beach vacation, and Dan approached us once everyone was ready to go back home.”

“That explains why Boteg has been acting funny around you.” She shoveled some pancakes onto their plates. Mika got two small round pancakes, and Hilaria got four large ones. “Burgers won’t be long.”

Su had an electric cooker like they used in some restaurants. It cooked the burgers by shocking them with electricity. It wasn’t as tasty as a charbroiled burger, but it could cook a burger in seconds instead of minutes. All she needed to do is pan cook it for a minute or two to make it look appetizing and she’d be good to go.

“What made you decide to join Dan, Hilaria? Did you have another patron before that?”

Hilaria was already halfway through finishing the pancakes by the time the conversation came back to her. “Food~!” She replied honestly. “Dan has so much great food~” she nearly squealed thinking about that ‘trip’ they went on. “Hilaria has had many patrons before Dan, though. Too many to count, but none of them were dolphins~”

“So Dan has food?” As soon as the “burger zapper” was done, Su loaded in a second one. She could tell Hilaria could eat more than one. “I wonder if I could arrange something with Dan.”

“He’s got a whole planet made of food! I don’t think he’d mind if you took some.” Mika giggled. “I’ll show you later, mommy.”

“I look forward to it.” Su was going to brown the burger up a bit more, but Hilaria looked like she was almost done with the pancakes. She dropped a slice of american cheese on the burger before heaping bacon and mushrooms on top of it. “Here we are.” After putting the bun on top, she moved the extra large burger over to Hilaria and lowered it onto her plate. “There’s ketchup right here, but I like to use a little barbecue sauce. You can pick which one you’d like to use.” Su scuffed her way towards the stove again. “If you don’t mind, I could use a hand with a special project.” She looked to Hilaria. “Once your food digests, you don’t mind helping me move a few more items? It’s all inside the hotel.”

At first, Hilaria did not respond to Su’s question and instead the mouth-watering burger before her stole all focus. She would add ketchup and then pick the burger up, taking a huge bite out of it. She trembled as she savored it, and then finally looked back up to Su. “Hilaria loves it~!” She seemed giddy, diving back into it. It was not long until she finished it, licking some ketchup off her fingers before returning back to Su. “Mmm, Hilaria can help since you make good food~ What does Hilaria need to lift~?” she asked.

Su blinked. There was a look of bitter acceptance on her face as she realized she would not be able to cook as fast as this woman could pack it away. “A few items, I’ll show you when you’re ready.” She took off her apron.

“Can I have that last burger?”

“Thank you again for agreeing to help with this.” Su guided Hilaria over to Helga’s room. “We’ve been getting so many guests that we’ve had to consolidate rooms. All I need is some help moving things from this room to the one five rooms down.”

“Hilaria thinks this is a good inconvenience, then~” she gave a small laugh. Having too many guests meant that business was good, after all. “This should be over quick. Hilaria can’t imagine anything weighing more than a car if it’s in a hotel room~” she stated, beginning to pick things up that she was instructed to. She became curious, however, upon seeing the different rooms. The place overall had a comforting atmosphere, at least in her opinion. “Hmm~” she looked to Su. “Hilaria wonders what the cost of room and board here might be~?”

“That depends on the type of room you want.” Su hurried over to her room and swiped her card. The door slid open. “The common rooms are very affordable, but you’ll have to share with someone since they’re all filling up. The luxury rooms are a bit pricier, but we have all the prices rolled back a bit to encourage guests to stay.” She pointed inside. “If you could just push the beds together that would be great.”

Hilaria moved over to one of the beds and grabbed it with one hand, lifting it up, being careful not to bump it into anything. She placed it down beside another bed, and even adjusted their positions to make sure it looked nice. “If it’s affordable, then Hilaria may stay sometime~” She mentioned. She often rested in Dan’s dimension but her experience with other patrons had her believing that a good situation like that was not permanent. “How long has this hotel been here~? Hilaria doesn’t remember it from last time she was here, but Hilaria has does have trouble remembering things to begin with~”

“It’s been under our management for a few months now. Maybe half a year.” Su was carrying a nightstand through the hall. “I think it was built here around the seventies? Unsure of the exact details. My patron made the purchase himself. It had been closed down for a few years because the previous owner couldn’t foot the cost to upgrade all the appliances. Everything was pretty outdated.” Su smiled. “Have you been in Penrose long?”

She shook her head. “Hilaria was only here for a few days before Dan took her to the beach~” Hilaria leaned against the wall. “It didn’t feel too long there, though~ Otherwise, Hilaria has only briefly visited a few times~”

“This probably isn’t the best time to be in Penrose, with things being the way they are. Though maybe that’s why you’re here?”

With her reason for being in Penrose brought up, Hilaria suddenly clasped her hands together in front of her ample chest. "Oh, it's so terrible~!" she cried. "Hilaria has been trying her best to move away from a stalker, but as tenacious as they are, she's beginning to think those attempts are mere folly~!"

“A stalker?” Su approached Hilaria while carrying a desk lamp. “Is it another magical girl?”

Hilaria frowned as her expression became grim. “Worse~!” As if she were gathering the strength and courage she needed, she took a breath before speaking. “It’s trouble~! It always finds me, even though I don’t want it to~!” Any tension she displayed before vanished in an instant, replaced by a mischievous grin. “Hilaria can’t seem to catch a break, what with all the World Wars and now this crusade~! It was quiet in Penrose last time, so Hilaria thought it’d be safe~”

“Wa?” World wars? A crusade? Hilaria could just be acting dramatic, but was it possible she was older than she seemed. “Hilaria, you’re safe here. What’s stalking you?”

“Catastrophe, calamity, calamari~!” she said, taking a moment. “Wait, Hilaria’s stomach was talking for a second there~ But bad things follow Hilaria wherever she goes, so Trouble would be her stalker~!” her stomach suddenly rumbled. “And hunger~”

Su raised an eyebrow. “You’re hungry again?”

In all honesty though, it was hard to be upset with the amount of food Hilaria ate. If not for her, Su would be patiently waiting for Helga to come pick her up in the middle of Penrose, all while hoping Mint or Ascendancy girls didn’t find her. Instead she had gotten back safe and even had enough time to rearrange their rooms. While Hilaria was a little strange, she wasn’t some muscle head who lacked finesse. She understood how to arrange the furniture and tended to everything with care. This all got the gears in Su’s head turning.

“Hilaria.” Su bowed. “Thank you for your help. Things could have turned out a lot worse without your assistance.” She raised her head. “We have a lot of new guests, and we’ll need more people to help serve them.” She smiled. “Would you be interested in helping out around the Golden Trove? I’d be willing to feed you as part of your employment.”

As that sacred word came out of her mouth, Su could witness the exact moment Hilaria’s pupils turned into stars. “Would Hilaria ever~!?” She abruptly snatched up Su’s hands and held them in front of her, staring into what might’ve been her very soul. “The helpless shall be helped~! The needing shall be attended to~! If Hilaria can do the job, then consider it finished~! You can count on her~!”

“Ngh!” What was with this woman? The last time someone looked at her like this was Helga after she told her she loved her. It was making Su blush. “Y-yea!” Su chuckled. “We could use you. Just ease up on that look a little.”

“Look~?” she didn’t seem to understand what Su meant, but pulled away a little to give Su some space. “Well, okay~ Hilaria will do her best, then~”

”Get off my balls, Sammy!”

— Nuncio

Not all was well inside Mariette’s mansion. Inside one of the rooms was an angry detective drumming her fists on Nuncio’s head. This was only possible because Nuncio had collapsed beside the bed and she was standing on top of it. Otherwise it would have been impossible for her to reach.

”Sammy!” Nuncio reached over his head and caught her wrists in his hands. ”The heck are ya doin’ that for?”

She sniffed. ”The door is locked, Nuncio! I’ve deduced that we have been trapped again, and it’s all your fault! How could you trust a known kidnapper?” She tried to pull her arms free.

”Listen, broad!” Nuncio kept a good hold on Sammy’s arms. ”Ya gotta have more faith in ya friends!”

”Hmm?” Sammy stopped tugging.

The mafioso nodded. ”Yea!” He smiled. ”Amaryllis wanted to help you escape.” When it felt like Sammy wasn’t going to hit him anymore, he let go of her arms. ”Mariette helped track ya down. Same with Eli I’m sure. Sophia also happened to be one of Amaryllis’s friends.”

”They’re all her friends?”

”Yea!” Nuncio nodded enthusiastically.

Sammy hesitated, and scratched her chin. ”So you saw I was missing?”

”Yea!”

”Went to Amaryllis for help?”

”Yea!”

”Maybe some other people?”

”Yea! Brittany too.”

”And you searched for evidence?”

”Yea!”

”Which lead you to the warehouse where I was being held?”

”Yea!”

”And then we escaped?”

”Yea!”

”And now we’re here, likely to be released soon?”

”Yea!”

”But most of the girls involved directly with my rescue are Amaryllis’s friends?”

”Yea!”

”And she’s very pretty?”

”Ye- uh, I mean, she ain’t bad lookin’.”

”And since most of the people involved with my rescue were her friends, you spent the most time talking to her?”

Nuncio’s smile started to go away. ”She was the most willin’ to help.”

”Probably ate at some fancy places with her?”

”Her idea.”

”Bet you made a gift for Mariette too, huh?”

”Gotta grease the palms of some broads.”

Sammy hopped off the bed and walked in front of Nuncio. ”According to my deductions…” She pulled out her magnifying glass. ”You, good sir.” She turned to face him. ”Have been.” She gripped the magnifying glass like it was a hammer and pulled her arms all the way back. ”A pervert!”

Nuncio, well aware of where this was going, managed to close his legs before Sammy could assault him. ”I nearly died so that you could escape!”

”That only makes me angrier!” She said before powering up for the next strike.

”Sammyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!”
