BIOGRAPHY
Embrina's father, Kyo, was the best friend of Chief Magnus, as they had grown up together, and fought side by side. Kyo even saved Magnus’s life on two different occasions. Resulting in a promise of joining their families, Magnus betrothed his eldest son Alois to Kyo’s yet to be conceived future daughter. Kyo held the position of admiral of the Estrye navy, though it functioned more like a pirate fleet under his command, as he was known to be wild. Her mother, Olinda, was a young beauty from port city of Salak in Estrye. She worked mainly as a silk weaver, but also modeled for the artist guild on occasion.
Embrina’s parents met by chance one evening during the summer lights festival. Kyo recognized Olinda as the beauty in one of the newest paintings hung in Chief Magnus’s palace. Though it was not that uncommon for a noblemen to take a pretty commoner as a concubine, it was abnormal to make a commoner your legal wife, but that was what Kyo did, as he had completely fallen for her. Embrina’s was born two years later. She was a sweet little baby, with her mother’s pink eyes, and her father’s black hair. They named her after the ancient Goddess of summer that had been being celebrated at the festival they met at.
The first few years of her life were spent in her father’s country manor, surrounded by his citrus orchards in the east of Estrye. Kyo was a decorated soldier and knight at the time; he had yet to receive the position of admiral, though it was only a matter of a few years. For a short while after she was born, he tried to play the family man and good husband, but the sea was calling him back. So when Embrina was two years old her father went back to his swashbuckling ways. Every few months he would come home with stories about his adventures at sea, and he would bring home presents for her and his wife.
Unfortunately when Embrina was five years old, her mother died after a fire broke out in the manor. The whole place burned to the ground claiming not only the life of her mother, but also most of the servants. Embrina was left in the care of the few surviving servants, until her father got the news and sailed home. A month later he arrived, distraught about his wife's death, and having no idea what to do with his little girl. He was unwilling to leave her behind with his distant relatives, who he had only spoken to a handful of times. So as captain of an Estrye naval ship, he brought little Embrina aboard to stay.
Though it quickly became apparent that a navy ship was no place to raise a little noble girl. The crew had grown fond of her, but it was extremely unsafe for a child. Too many close calls with cannon blasts, and steel swords hacking away. Six months later Kyo left Embrina in the care of an old friend, the retired palace architect Colben and his family.
Colben was already raising three of his grandsons, so one more child didn’t make a difference to him. Embrina excelled under his guidance, and his grandsons became like older brothers to her. The three boy’s names were Minick, Jarrick, and Barryn. Colben didn’t know exactly how to raise a girl, so she was instead treated the same as the boys. She began learning sword fighting, and taking all the same lessons as them. Colben’s wife Dorisa was thrilled with having a little girl in the house; she had raised five sons, and now had eight grandsons, so little Embrina was like a wish come true. Embrina was happy to be smothered with love, and girly gift by Dorisa, especially since she missed her mother so much.
Two years past and when she was eight years old, news of her father being confirmed MIA arrived. During a major fight with some unidentified barbarian fleet, he and his crew were overtaken, and his ship sunk. Officially he was listed as missing, but most believed him to be dead at the bottom of the ocean. Barley two months later her maternal great aunt Zendra, showed up looking to claim Embrina, and take her home with her. Colben had tried to reason with the woman, but in the end the stubborn witch would not take no as an answer, and after a short legal battle, Embrina left with Zendra. As soon as her father was officially listed as dead, Embrina inheritance would be under her guardians control, and that was all Zendra really wanted.
Embrina cried herself to sleep every night the whole journey to her aunt’s place in the lawless city of Grogren in western Estrye. Life here was very different for the eight year old Embrina. Her aunt was the madam of a brothel in the notorious Grogren red light district. Embrina spent most of her day cleaning, and cooking, for the prostitutes that lived there. Nights where spent handing out drinks to clients, and keeping the illegitimate toddlers occupied in the basement. She also was used as a messenger between her aunts brothel, and the local gambling dens, bars, and other houses of ill repute.
Due to Colben’s protests to King Magnus, Embrina’s father was still listed as missing instead of dead, even though it had already been over two years. She was now ten years old, and Zendra claimed Embrina needed to start earning her place, since her inheritance had yet to come in and Zendra was sick of paying for her needs. So Zendra sold young Embrina’s virginity off to the highest bidder. Embrina had hit, kick, and scratched hard enough to draw blood, but the real kicker was she had bitten the bastard’s ear off. Afterwards Zendra had her flogged for injuring the customer who purchased her for the night. Then she told Embrina that she was old enough to earn her keep, and expected her to smile from now on.
Embrina ran away a week later, and at the age of 10 she was on her own. She cut off her long black hair, and dressed in boys clothes. She decided to stow away on a ship that was heading to the condiment islands, as the stories her dad told her about the islands sounded magical. Three days into the voyage she was caught. Half the crew wanted to throw her off the ship into the ocean, and the other half had no opinion on the matter. Benji, the ships medic came to her defense, saying he needed an assistant anyway, and that tossing her overboard would be a waste of free labor. The captain reluctantly agreed, and Embrina spent the rest of the voyage swabbing the deck, doing laundry, and peeling potatoes. By the end of the three month trip across the sea, she had become the little mascot of the ship, affectionately nicknamed Kit by the crew.
After docking in the islands main port, Embrina didn't really know what to do with herself. Thankfully Benji took her under his wing as an assistant, and she joined him on board another ship he had contracted with. She learned how to fight with daggers, how to amputate limbs, and sew up wounds. She wanted to go home to Estrye, but she was a minor, and officially her great aunt was her legal guardian, unless her father magically came back from the dead. She was fourteen when Benji's drinking got out of hand, and she spent more nights cleaning up his vomit than anything else. He got fired multiple times, and no one would hire him since he became a drunken liability...nobody but pirates anyway.
Embrina was able to find Benji a position on a rickety old ship. Little did she know the crew was not made up of the most loyal or friendly people. Two weeks into the journey, there was a mutiny and the captain was killed. Dwaine the cook took over as acting captain, and anyone who went against him ended up dead or locked in the brig. Benji unfortunately couldn't keep his drunken mouth shut, and Dwaine slit his throat. Thus Embrina ended up in the brig, and was told she that she was to be sold off somewhere. Weeks later, they finally docked, and Dwaine sent his goons to sell Embrina on the black market in the city. It was at this point in time that she started building walls between people, and not giving her trust out willy-nilly.
As she was being dragged to the market in the middle of the night, by some miracle she was able to slide her captors’ dagger out of it sheath and stab him in the gut. She slashed at the other goon, and missed, but the second swing got him in the leg. She ran, as fast and far as she could. A few days later she sold the dagger, and used the money to by passage to Estrye, in the hopes of finding Colben and his family though she couldn't remember where in Estrye they lived. The voyage was safe and uneventful.
It took six months but she finally made it to Colben’s home, and they took her in with loving arms. They also had news of her father. He was not dead, but in fact had been alive, living in a small An’elle village, suffering from memory loss. After a suffering a bad sickness, he regained his memories and made his way back to Estrye three years ago. Zendra had been locked up, and her father had been searching for Embrina since. She also now had a step-mother and half brother, Gavin, who just turned four years old.
The reunion with her father was sweet, he even cried, which was extremely rare for him. Her step-mother Cornelia was the An'elle woman who had taken care of her father when he lost his memory, and they had married when she had found herself pregnant three years ago before he regained his memories. Officially Cordelia was her father's concubine, but as he had no living legal wife, Cordelia was treated as the high lady of the household. With Embrina being back, she technically should have taken over that position, but Embrina had spent the last seven or so years surviving, and was nothing like a noble girl should be. She had no idea how to behave, or do her duties. Not that her father particularly cared about her behavior, in fact he loved that she knew how to sail, and wield a sword.
She wanted to be the perfect daughter for her father, who she had thought was dead for almost a decade. So under her step-mothers guidance she was rigorously taught etiquette, manors, music, dancing, fashion, art, and other noble lady pursuits. A year or so later her father happily explained to her that she was betrothed to King Magnus's oldest son, and that she had been so, since she was born. Apparently she had even met him before, back when she was four years old during Alois's birthday celebration at the palace. Not that she could remember it.
Traditionally noble women in Estrye married between the ages of 16 and 20, and apparently now that she was 16 her father and King Magnus wished to officially join their families. Thankfully Cordelia was on Embrina's side when she objected to the hasty marriage. And Alois also expressed a desire for a proper courting period before an actual marriage. So instead, the wedding was postponed for another year, giving her more time to memorize and be educated in the ways of being a noble woman; something most girls started at three years old, she had only been learning for a little over a year.
In the meantime her great aunt Zendra died in prison before she could officially be punished for her list of crimes. By the time the year passed, Embrina had given up on the idea of becoming the perfect noble daughter, as her father seemed happy and proud of her just as she was. As someone marrying into Estrye's royal family she did have to keep up her noble lady studies, but she didn't stress about it anymore. She met with Alois a dozen or so times over the year, at parties, and on occasion they had tea in the place gardens. "Courting" as everyone referred to it, was not as dull as she assumed it would be. And they slowly went from cordial polite strangers to become friends. At least according to Embrina, it was hard to read Alois.
Their wedding was put off again and again over the next three years, first by both parties, but then the reasons of being young, unprepared, and in need of proper education stopped being valid for Embrina, and it was only Alois excuses that prolonged their engagement.
