“What in the hell…” Slick stayed put as he stared at the stable containing the oversized lioness, but that wasn’t the only beast within the establishment that caught his eye. Oversized fowl and lizards too? These folk are wilder than I thought. Just when he thought he couldn’t be surprised, Avalia jumped up and spooked him with ease.

“Welcome to Myriamor’s Sturdy Stables. Something catch your eye? You seem interested in our rare selection.” A male fairy said as fluttered to Slick’s side. Slick raised his brow but kept his cool. Being alone meant he had no one else to help him blend in but himself.

“Interested? Maybe in lookin’ at the critters, but I’m a much simpler man. I’m lookin’ for somethin’ with hooves, a mane, and lackin’ the desire to steal my steak.” Slick was calm and cool as he spoke to the Forest Fairy.

“So the standard horse.”

“Standard? No, I’m lookin’ for the best you got. I like simple, but standard ain’t my style. You see, I'm a man with specific taste. Simple, yes, but it gotta be exceptional as well. You hear?” Slick clarified with a serious tone that caused the fairy to silently nod. He thought this guy spoke oddly, but knew his sort. The ones with the specific tastes were always so serious when it came to what they wanted. Some people literally waited several months for a black panther mount and he still hadn’t acquired it. The thing was, the stable owner knew once it arrived, it would be purchased the day it arrived. These types were annoyingly reliable in that way.

“The best horse then. Follow me, sir. They are a bit further down.” The fairy led Slick to the stabled containing horses but did not utter a word as he knew these particular buyers would handpick what they wanted. And he was correct as Slick visually inspected the horses within the stables.

“Now looky here. This one. He’s absolutely gorgeous… and I’m a lady’s man y’know.” Slick approached the palomino horse as if he had already decided. “Champ. Short for Champagne. A delicacy I could never formerly enjoy, plus it fits his appearance, right?”

“Champagne is nice… He’s an Oak horse so he’ll be pricier.”

“Pricier? How much you talkin’”

“220 amas.” Slick wasn’t sure if he had that seeing as he hadn’t figured out how amas worked yet and asking outright might blow his cover. He’d have to figure out pricing some other way.

“That’s a bit heftier than I thought it’d be. How ‘bout this. I’ll head out and get the amas, come back, and I’ll pay in full no problem. Deal?”

“No deal. Sorry. If someone comes through here with the amas and the desire for that horse, I’m selling it to them. It’s first come, first served.”

“I can accept that. Alrighty, I’ll be on my way and I guess I’ll have to be mighty quick if I want Champ there.” In reality, Slick had more than enough amas to purchase the horse, but he’d need a lesson on Avalian currency to figure that out first.

Kaleb peered down with his squinty face at Raven who briefly rested her head on him. He didn't mind a little affection, but a little was all he was going to get. As soon as she looked up at him, she jumped… Well more than jumped. Kaleb felt a burst of air push against him as Raven flew off the bed and plopped onto the floor. “Magic…” He whispered as he was reminded of the elements. Air, huh? He might have gone to help her, but he wasn't sure whether or not he would spook her again.

Meanwhile, Eris woke up like she hadn't chugged all those tankards last night. She's a tank!
She was simply beaming. Kaleb initially sighed when Eris addressed him. It was not directed at her. He was just envious of her current state.

“Morning… and yes, coffee would be wonderful.” He groaned as he continued to look through his lashes. He sat up some and rubbed his temples hoping it would make the pain lessen. “And thanks, Eris.” Kaleb said with rare gratitude that he felt was well-deserved. He hadn't expected her to change right there in front of him, but it was a pleasant surprise and he wouldn't complain. She was nice enough to give Raven a new outfit too. Kaleb felt lucky to have met such a generous lady with him.

When Eris made her exit, Raven requested he avert his eyes from her while she changed.

“You know I wasn't even… nevermind.” Kaleb was fine with shutting his eyes as it gave him some relaxation. It wasn't until he heard her voice from a far corner of the room that he opened his eyes. She was asking about last night, and despite his killer headache, he remembered quite a lot of it. “Well, that's pretty much how it happened. We drank a lot, talked about meeting Annya…” Kaleb couldn't help but to stop and smile. “Then you got your soapbox… I'm sure her ears were ringing all night. It was fun though. We left and said bye to Bowyn. Do you at least remember him? Blue eyes and silver hair with a hint of grumpiness.”

Kaleb stretched his arms out openly now that he was the only one in bed. He wasn't quite ready to get off the bed, and instead pulled himself from under the blanket and sat on the edge of the bed in nothing but his boxers. The rest of his clothes were tossed beneath the end table but was in no rush to grab them.

“Anyway. Eris got us a cheap room here since the other inn was booked due to some weird holiday. Then you uh… I'm not sure if I should say. You were just drunk and needed someone. You know how it is.” Kaleb shrugged as if it wasn't that big of a deal.

Attention drew to the three misfits that entered Aldrakh, especially with Vrexen wrapped in a blanket and Myra lacking any clothing. Here in Aldrakh, being in the nude wasn’t a big deal, it just was not a common occurrence. What was even more uncommon were what they assumed to be misshapen beast-men entering their settlement. Anyone who did not know any better would assume Astra was a slaver that had tamed rare breeds of Demi-humans gone feral.

“Lord Vrexen, I suggest we bed-down here until we can sell the hippocampi. We won’t have any use of a watercraft for a long while and without the proper care, the watercraft and the horses are just going to expire.”

“We can always eat them.”

“Yeah, but if we get amas for them, we won’t have to settle on meat from old stinky horses. I can acquire something much richer in taste and far more filling.” Astra persuaded selfishly. She was not keen on eating raw hippocampi today.

“Fine, but if you cannot sell them by the time that THING in the sky is gone, I will gnash into their flesh! Vrexen bared his teeth at Astra who gave a silent obedient nod.

“It’s a deal. And You should try sticking your hand out a bit. The sun is kind of doing a shitty job getting through the thick clouds here. These Orcs use a lot of fuckin’ fire to forge the things they do, so if we stay close to this place we-”

“YES!” Vrexen threw the blanket off his body and basked in the dulled light of the sun. More eyes drew to the group with Vrexen’s reaction to the sun being absent. “Perhaps I won’t kill these Orcs. I… favor them.” A toothy grin spread across his face.

“That is… a very good thing. We really like Orcs and would NEVER EVER do them any harm.” Astra made sure she was clearly heard.

“But I do wish to kill something…”

“Like now?”

“.........Yes.” Vrexen was still grinning but more to himself and Astra found it strange. She hoped this was not like when they were all at the Malthemoor docks. Well, shit. She furrowed her brows trying to come up with something when she spotted several Orcs in some sort of huddle a bit away.

“You know what? You should go tell those Orcs over there that you’re ready as fuck to kill something. I think they’ll point you in the right direction.” Astra assumed Vrexen would either get murdered by the Orcs or they were really down to let him join them to go kill something. She remembered Vrexen claiming he could not die, but she wasn’t taking that with face value.

“I shall invite them to violence.”

“Good. Violence is good.” She said sarcastically. "Anyway, Myra, you wanna go kill shit with Vrexen or do some trading with me?” Astra asked.

“Amas or violence?” Vrexen presented the choice as well.

Before

With the party down two members due to unpredicted circumstances, only the three fierce heroes remained. Bowyn, the honest and bold. A Fairy who lost too much to the damned Dark Elves to not pass up on the chance to bring the fight to them. Then there was Eris, ever so wise and reliable. An elven maiden that had saved the very man who would rescue Avalia from the clutches of their opposition. And lastly, there was the chosen one. The one who would bring an end to this war with his limitless potential and instinctive leadership qualities.

For their first objective… They all decided it would be pretty dope to get some food and drink at the local bar. There were laughs, cheers, and then jeers too as someone burst into the bar to shout out the news from Roshmi. It was terrible news, but that just gave the three more reason to push on with the festivities. And they did!

Their efforts were not for nothing as a snowy-white-haired vixen named Raven quickly approached the group with her eyes set on Kaleb, of course. It wasn’t a surprise that someone had heard of the young hero destined to save the world…

In actuality, Kaleb was just as surprised as Raven. Judging by her excitement, she didn’t just know of him, Raven was kind of starstruck. Apparently, she was simply doing the same as they were, enjoying a night of fun and drinking. Kaleb didn’t want his lies to Bowyn to fall through just yet, so he jumped up and embraced Raven in a hug just so he could quietly tell her to play along with him. He awkwardly introduced her as his good friend Valerie since he hadn’t got her name yet.

When inquiring if Raven was searching for Annya, Kaleb noticed her not being too keen on talking about her… at first anyway. A little more drinking brought a little more words. When Raven finally started to talk about Annya, the things she said were…

Very unfavorable! Kaleb was conflicted with the information Valerie was providing to him. So much so, he pulled his wise advisor, Eris off to the side to inquire about the temperament of Princess Annya. And to his dismay, Eris delivered a soft-spoken, yet trustworthy confirmation. She urged Kaleb to be wary of Annya, but the young hero was not a keeper of secrets! He approached both Bowyn and Valerie sharing his wariness with meeting Annya and even went as far as saying. “Bowyn, boldest of your kind. I’m afraid things are far worst than even you predicted. Our union has helped reveal a darkness that lingers with the one I intend to meet… but we need allies! We will meet her, but do not place faith in the woman.”

And with that… there was some more drinking. And THEN, they retreated for the night. Bowyn, being as bold as he was, went off alone. Meanwhile, Kaleb, being the gentleman he is, brought the two maidens to his abode. The rest, I’ll leave up to your imagination.

Now

“Ughhh fuck those sugary drinks, my head is pounding!” Kaleb groaned with his eyes shut since seeing the bright sunlight would only make his headache worse. He groaned again as he reflexively reached to his left for his phone only to touch a body. “Oh.” He recoiled before reaching to his right. Same thing, another body. “Huh. What the…” Kaleb peeked through his lashes with the scenery reminding him that he was still in the fantastical world of Avalia.

Previous Night

Unlike the events that occurred at the Nest, Slick and Kuroi actually had somewhat of a fine night at the Rattlesnake Bar. Slick might've thrown out his own personal tip for such good service if he was that type of guy. Before Slick could get to the point of complaining about "Rosarita" and the others' lack of arriving, the two had called it a night. The two briefly reunited with Mika and the three of them discussed what was planned for the following day. Mika would get some well-deserved R&R while Slick and Kuroi met with Rosaria and the humans she was escorting. Whenever Mika was finished, the whole lot of them would lay out the rest of what was supposed to happen from there. That was the plan.

On this fine day, Slick rolled himself out of his bed before the sun could even creep up from the horizon. He let his eyes adjust to the dark room so he could creep out of the room without disturbing Kuroi or the fennec fox he slept soundly within another bed. The man-made sure he had all he needed to venture out on his own before tipping his hat to the sleepers and slipping out the door.

Seeya around. Slick strutted through the quiet inn before stopping at the front desk where a visibly tired gecko Demihuman stood. Slick guessed the poor soul was at the end of his shift.

“Sun's 'bout to rise, ain't it?” Slick asked as he leaned his right sight on the counter with a smug grin. The Demi-human slowly blinked his large eyes as he tried to understand Slick's odd manner of speaking. He looked down at his time-teller and then back at Slick.

“Um. The sun is rising soon sir.” Slick's grin dropped some at the man's lack of enthusiasm.

“Heh. Anyone ever tell you you're a charmer? Anyway, you know where I can get myself a good horse that'll get me 'round these parts?”

“I would try Sturdy Stables on the south side of town, but I’m not sure they open before sunrise.” Slick stood himself up straight and pointed to the window giving off the warm pink glow of the sunrise.

“Well I’ll be. Lucky and charmin’ all rolled up into a scaly mess.” Slick snickered as he walked from the counter and proceeded out the door to Myriamor.

“Thanks?” The gecko just wanted to be done with his shift.

Upon exiting the inn, Slick looked in the direction of the sunrise. If Avalia works like home, should be simple to navigate south with the sun jus’ comin’ up. This town though. It’s a bit complicated, but I’ll find my way if I keep it pushin’. Slick walked through Myriamor, constantly using the sun as a reference. Sure there were some dead ends, but the man found his way all the while snagging some amas from some drunk sleeping in the street. The man had a decent knife, but Slick left it so the fool could at least defend his life if need be. It took about an hour to navigate to the very south of Myriamor and it took another thirty minutes to find Sturdy Stables. He picked up a lot of information on his stroll. A bounty was put on the heads of humans and Roshmi was taken over. Slick couldn’t say he wasn’t bothered. He had a bounty on his own head before, but he figured he could keep a clean slate longer than just a day.

“Sturdy Stables. How can you help me?” Slick said as he entered. “What in the…” He let out as he noticed an oversized lioness in one of the stables.

Hours earlier…

The odd deadly trio set out to traverse the open sea aboard their hippocampi-drawn watercraft. They had started bright and early, and that very brightness caused Vrexen to curse the sun rays that stung against his body. His calls for violence against the bright pink orb in the sky were both humorous and scary to all who had the chance to witness it. At the moment, the red-faced demon sat with narrowed eyes while wrapped in a thick white blanket acquired from their stay at the Yenworth Inn.

Myra, being a demon more acquainted with the sunrays, instead found her own kind of misery on the voyage. Seasickness and boredom had colluded in making Myra greatly desire the end to the journey across the giant wavy pond. Curiosity occasionally drew her to the hippocampi and almost every time she was shooed away from them by Astra.

“Myra, they’re nice huh? Hey! Get back!”

. . . .

“Myra, hold it RIGHT there!”

. . . .

“Myra!”

. . . .

“No!”

. . . .

“Myra… MYRA NOOO!

With three out of the four hippocampi reined to the watercraft, the trio were eventually met with the sight of the Malthemoor Naval fleet tasked with occupying Aldrakh’s port. Astra took point as planned, but the Malthemoor military officers were more interested in addressing Vrexen as he was identified as being a member of an “eight-member Demon special purpose force supporting Malthemoor.” And like that, the trio had freedom of movement within the stone, wood, and metal built Aldrakh. Astra was just glad things were looking up after what happened with the hippocampus that didn’t make it with the rest. They didn’t need the smelly old equestrians anyway, so the group would have to find a buyer soon.

The Aldrakh Orc Clan is known to be quite civil but often war with not only the Dugmaghord orcs but also the dwarves nearby. They tend to side with Malthemoor during conflicts. They are the more populated orc clan and thus tend to have better resources, architecture. They live in houses and buildings made from stone, metal, and wood having a stable settlement and staying in one place. There are various shops and bars around that orcs frequent that are named simple and straight to the point names such as: "The Tavern." Trading and selling here are held at trading posts and shops set up around the settlement. Items and supplies tend to have high value to them here. They do have a meeting hall that also serves as a court area to settle their disputes. All disputes are settled in a trial like those of humans. Here ranks are gained by a vote. The Orcs here are raised at a higher standard than those of Dugmaghord, for the most part. They eat together and party together similar to that of Dugmaghord. The former is their favorite. Gender roles do not exist amongst the clan. Marriage ceremonies are held between any two orcs that desire to be together. They are culturally atheists but celebrate holidays with festivities with music, games, and other activities orcs consider fun.

Aldrakh was booming with the presence of both Malthemoor’s Dark Elven troops and members of the Aldrakh Orc Clan. These two groups of Avalians meshed well as the elves provided revenue while the orcs provided goods and services. Aldrakh served as a forward base that the Dark Elves could deploy their units from by both land and sea. The troops seemed to be in higher spirits than normal, holding an air of confidence while commenting on their occupation of Roshmi and the attack on the Sun Elf Kingdom supply cache. Astra was initially surprised Malthemoor was dominating in the offensive since they were meant to be strangers to this side of the world. Then she remembered her travels and her encounters with many of her kind. Dark Elves were unwanted on the mainland, sure, but the mainland had more of a permissive environment than that of Daka. Permissive environments were always the playing field for spies and the like.

“I smell no demons, yet these creatures… These are the orcs?” Vrexen took a whiff of the air as the group walked towards town. He recalled Astra mentioning these people during their travels. I want to kill one… I must kill one!

“Yeah. They're the tough ones here in Avalia. Strong, fast, and they're good at killing all sorts of things.” Astra looked towards two Orcs showing off their newly forged swords to each other. “A lot of old elves say the only thing stopping these big hunks from conquering everything is their high mortality rate. They don’t live as long as us, but the thing that really does them in is how they’re constantly throwing themselves into some kind of fight. Even when no one wants to fight ‘em, they just fight each other… or they do this thing where a chief fuckin’ howls at the moon or some shit, and then they just get so battle crazed, no one has a choice but to fight ‘em.” Astra shrugged. “Different cultures just have their own weird thing going on.”

“Good question, Kass, but the answer might not be so complicated. Despite his credentials, Dr. Bingley is considered an outsider by your people. Even with his intentions being beneficial to Atlantis, his actions may be perceived as meddling.” Viktor was seated comfortably with his forearms resting on his thighs while typing a wall of text into his phone. “It’s foolish, but I guess enough Atlanteans are so closed minded their King has to smuggle outside assistance into his kingdom.” Viktor commented dully without ever taking his eyes off the screen of his phone.

This mission put him out of his element and unlike the previous missions, this escort mission presented a higher chance of the team being attacked. There were plenty of enemies to the kingdom and there were also those that did not think too kindly of “surface dwellers.” Viktor was not able to thoroughly research all known threats before the mission’s start, meaning he’d either have to adapt or lean on some of his other teammates. The former was a complicated feat while the latter was not to his liking. He could reckon one thing though, this mission would go far smoother than the unspeakable Vegas mission. The thought of that night made him shoot a glance at Zach at the porthole before he averted his sight, his eyes now landing on Daphne and then Aleen’a. He finally lowered his phone screen so he could address something he overheard.

“Aleen’a. Kissing Kass is an optimal idea and would assist the team in our mission. Having just a single translator is too inadequate for the size of our team.”

“Sun Elves? Oh right, those are them purdy ones with the pointed ears.” He kept his voice low to keep the conversation somewhat discreet. He then helped himself to another swig of beer to break the conversation and think about Kuroi's answer some. Kuroi hadn't corrected his inference regarding his relationship with Mika and it seemed that Kuroi was not aware of all the moves Mika planned on making in regards to saving Avalians from the impending doom. Slick really needed more to go on for both of these different subjects, but this was a decent start.

It was possible Kuroi failed to understand what he meant when concerning his and Mika’s status as a couple. Slick and Kuroi were from different places after all and it wouldn’t be the first time two men had a misunderstanding of words. Now when it came to speaking on what was next to come, Slick had a few ideas. Kuroi was holding back more of the plan, Mika was holding back more of the plan, or there simply was no plan at the moment. A lack of information was dangerous but a lack of a plan was even more so.

“I wonder how long it's gonna take that Rosarita gal and her gang to get here. I mean we ain't been here longer than an hour but I'm the type that can only sit and dally for so long.” Slick’s voice raised some as he was speaking on an issue that always bothered him. Taking some time out to hit a saloon was nice but Slick preferred getting some kind of work done. “What’s this friend of hers like anyhow? She nice like our gal or what?” Slick asked before the bartender set a bowl of red colored mush and a spoon in front of him. He frowned down at the bowl’s contents before shrugging, grabbing the spoon and digging in. He’d seen worse meals and if Avalia could have better beer than the Frontier, he could only assume the food was better too. His first spoonful of sandberry pudding was even tastier than he expected, being so sweet and tasting exactly like that of cinnamon. “Now I’ll be… Good pickin’s bartender! Good pickin’s!” Slick said with a big ol’ grin.

Viktor stood quietly at the rear for the mission briefing. Not being selected as the leader for a mission was beginning to strike a nerve. Kass was the obvious choice, and he had been the second in command for the previous two missions, but he wanted a chance to prove he could lead the team to surefire victory. He wanted there to be no doubt in anyone’s mind that he had led the team to success. Why? Maybe it was just to show he could pull the leadership position off better than the others or perhaps he wanted to make sure things were done his way. It was toxic, yes, but he wanted his team to be successful and their lives unthreatened by complacency.

He thought he might be able to slink back into the secondary leadership position, but Kass left with “Ja” trailing her. I can discuss my position with Kass when she returns. For now he decided to actually follow Daphne’s lead for once and inspect the diving suit. It was interesting to him how much it resembled his own suit minus the hood over the helmet and black coloration. He wondered who went through the effort in designing such a suit. The butler? Viktor glanced at Talon for a moment wondering if he had deduced the same. The guy had been offly quiet and to himself since the incident at the circus. Sure, he had gotten the intelligence after the fact, but he was defeated and possibly compromised by whoever attacked him. Comforting the young man was not his responsibility, and even if it was, he’d be negligent in it. He did not like Talon and Black Canary simply requested him to hold back his criticisms. If Talon let failure destroy him, then he was never meant to be on this team.

“Alisa, how do you feel about this mission. You have a suit to protect you but even a minor breach of it could be detrimental, yes?” His bias towards Alisa showed, and using her full name might come off as different. He’d considered Batwoman’s suggestion, but he still preferred “A.” He’d test out the difference in reception today.

Kaleb felt a wave of relief when Eris suddenly arrived on the scene bearing a treat! I swear this woman has the best timing. It's not like I needed the help, but improvising like this has its limits… even for someone of my calibre. Kaleb linked his arms with Eris', smiling as he took a hold of the honey toast. It was a much needed snack and it looked absolutely delicious despite being a little heavy on the carbs.

“Wow this look amazing!” Kaleb said with faked awe before taking a bite. Damn… this is some good bread. Kaleb chowed down as the group started to stroll along with Eris telling the group what she had seen where all the commotion had come from. The beginning of what she was saying, he partially took note of. It wasn't of importance from his perspective. The mentioning of a dwarf staring longingly at an elven woman, however, drew his attention. Coincidence? Not a chance! That has to be Arn. And if it isn't...

“That was likely Arn. Just as I thought. Always the ogler.” Kaleb smirked as the smear continued. His eyes met with Eris' only for a short moment as he mentally acknowledged her convenience again. Suspicious? Not even. Kaleb was relieved that the woman came in so clutch. If things were looking up before, then things were definitely looking even higher now. Kaleb might not find Princess Annya but he would at least enjoy a great evening at a bar. Minus the wolf, the group was even, so the dynamic was perfect… Well it was perfect.

Rue suddenly decided to take off after making a few strange expressions in her eerie silence. He watched as she flew away with Moonlight trailing her on the ground. Despite her sudden departure, Kaleb was not too surprised by it. Ever since Rue arrived, there had been an odd tension between her and Bowyn. It almost felt like they got into some sort of fight and hadn't officially made up. It wasn't his problem though, so he casually waved goodbye to Rue as she left them.

“Are we still good to go to the bar or do you gotta… y'know… address that?” He gave a quick nod towards Rue who was still visibly in the air. Kaleb didn't even mind if Bowyn ran after his friend as River Port proved to be quite a small locale. Worst case scenario, Kaleb would run into the guy tomorrow. “Eris and I are good with whatever floats your boat. Right, Eris?” He grinned at his favorite person in Avalia by far. Eris was the best.
