Duke Lorenzo Vikena

All were voiced and all applied to the middle-aged man that stood silently amongst the many faces of disapproval, hidden amusement, pity, and hatred. Lorenzo thought he’d be used to being on this side of things by now, but every failure birthed a freshest deepest wound to whatever pride and dignity he attempted to grasp. Was there even anything there anymore? He was afraid to search for the answer for he feared it would aid in taking him away from this world. To Emina? No, she was high in the heavens in a paradise without his sickening and lowly existence. He did not deserve such a place. All the suffering and shame he brought forth to himself and anyone unfortunate enough to connect to him would land him in the darkest depths of hell, alone, for his presence even in the afterlife might only draw in ruin.

If the duke was exceptional at anything, it was the ability to just endure the harshness he deserved from his foolishness in the noble court. He could take it all in silence, without uttering a single retort. Not a crinkle of the nose, or even a slight rise of the eyebrow. He was strong as a mule in that guard, but…

Lottie.

It was difficult to look down at Charlotte as she attempted to appear lower than even himself. Why had she done such a thing? Why was she trying to protect someone so worthless? He wanted to get her up from the floor, but he kept his body stiff so he could draw all of his focus on fighting the slight sting in his eyes. Lorenzo didn’t want to cry in front of all these people, but how could he not? To have so much hopefulness slip away from him, to find Charlotte begging to take responsibility for his foolishness. The man, if he could even consider himself one, promised he would take care of his daughter. To keep Charlotte not only safe from harm, from sorrow, and more importantly from shame.

Look at her… What have I done? Why have a hurt the last person precious to me in this way?

Lorenzo’s silence was almost worrying if watched from afar after many had spoken in his stead. He was too pathetic to decide his own fate, so they attempted to do it for him. It was finally that he found himself addressed again by the Sultan of Alidasht himself. A king from afar, but a king no less.

“What say you about this whole mess as you are the cause of all this drama?”

He glanced up at the royal with a look of absolute defeat. Despite his sharp appearance, the man’s spirit was beaten down to the ground. He tried to keep his face stern, but he couldn’t help but glance down at Charlotte once more, knowing she was at stake. Lorenzo blinked rapidly as he attempted to be respectful and look Sultan Raif Kadir in the eyes. His attempt to answer was stopped by the uncontrollable quivering of his bottom lip. He clenched his teeth as his legs buckled and he fell forward on his hands and knees. There was a low groan but nothing else. His throat was constricted, struggling to swallow down a still-beating heart. He couldn’t fight it any longer.

Lorenzo sobbed, perhaps worse than during the funeral of his late wife Emina. Keeping his head down, the disgraced duke watched the tears run off his nose and splatter onto the polished marble floors.

“Emina… I-I am so s-sorry.” He voiced just above a whisper as he wept. “Your highness… p-please spare my beloved daughter. She… She is the last shred of pride I have. I will do anything to atone. Just please leave my Lottie out of this. I beg of you. I will serve you, your children, your servants, your slaves, your…” He broke out into weeping again as he could no longer think of anything else.

Caelestis took in Orias’ words, deciding to grant most of his attention to who he deemed to be the patriarch of this group. Even if he had not voiced his role in the group, the avian male would still assume it. Xavier had a young soul, Aiko had not given their name, and Yuka was simply a woman.

“Impossibility does seem to be quite fleeting these days. And no need to give your thanks. I am here to assist the guests of Avian City. Whether you’re truly Orias Biren matters little. It is that man you have with you that requires the attention of General Maximus and perhaps even Governor Brightfeater.” There was a tinge of disinterest in his tone as he mentioned the governor. Even she was not an exception to his views on gender roles. The product of fortunate birthright. If only she had a brother. He might have lingered on these thoughts as he escorted the group along but Aiko’s words broke him from his thoughts. Part of him wished the fox demihuman hadn’t done it as he found bliss in his negative views. It were these views that kept his thoughts off of the fact that he was being made to walk. The remaining two Sky Guard casually circled above, almost teasing the captain.

“Perhaps you can give us a tour after we've met the general, Captain?” The captain initially chuckled in reply as it only meant more walking. His previous temperament was dropping with every passing moment as he didn’t need to put on much of a strong appearance, especially if these four were going to be having a word with Augus of all people. Part of Caelestis’ off-putting approach was really just him channeling the general.

“Only if I’m permitted to fly… and if you were to give me your name, man of mystery.” He smirked playfully, but honestly knew whatever happened to this group was not up to him. He almost dreaded meeting his superior, but it was what had to be done.

It had taken nearly a half-hour of walking across the sky island before they could cross to the next using a long bridge that allowed a clear view of the wispy clouds hugging just below it. The walkways were mostly empty in Avian City as only the injured, young and elderly used them to get around. Guests were simply lucky such architecture existed as it was never made for them. And though the society was a selfish one, it turned away few. It was not rare to spot a fairy living amongst the avians. In fact, some preferred the safety and society of the sky city.

Eventually, a large estate came into view, its grounds teeming with vegetation that could thrive in this high elevation. Avian Sky Guard troops could be seen standing guard at different entry points to what seemed like someone’s home. One would have figured a General might be operating from a government building of sorts, but this was home where even his two sons could be seen playing a game of catch over one of the gardens. The group walked towards what appeared to be a side entry where two guards were posted on either side.

“Captain!”
“Captain! Two Sky Guard stood firm as both placed their right fists to the left side of their chests while raising their wings high.

“Carry on. I am here to meet the general.” The captain gave a nod to the two.

“Yes sir!” Both guards loosened their stances and allowed the group to enter, both curious about who these guests were. They entered the structure where more troops could be seen in a large room where a map of what appeared to be Roshmi was spread on a table. Heads perked up from the marked-up map and towards the odd group, but Captain Varencia’s familiar face allowed them to return to their planning. The captain inched toward Orias.

“Word of advice. You should probably do the talking, prince.” Caelestis knew once they entered the next room, the study, he would have little control of what might transpire. He gulped before opening the door and entering first. In the furthest section of the room seated behind a neatly organized table was hard-staring, alabaster-winged avian.

“Commander!” The captain attempted to snap into a salute, but he was not as swift as the general.

“Carry on, captain.” Augus commanded to which Caelestis relaxed himself. He then took a few steps forward t- “Carry. On. Captain.” Caelestis winced at Augus' striking tone before giving his commander a nod and turning to make a brisk exit from the room. Shit, they’re doomed. He had no faith in the group addressing Augus without at least the introduction he had rehearsed in his head. “Human. Prince. Step forward… and spin me your tales. I would love to hear the story you fooled my troops into believing. Manufactured sparks and a scarred-face elf just won’t do with someone tasked with protecting the entire city from the filth that plagues Roshmi.”

“Big ears? Bruh, you’re lucky those dreads are nerfing those things you’re hiding under there. You know when we were kids you scared the absolute shit out of me, right? Had me thinking a CAR with the front doors open was gonna run into me.” The younger of the two shot back, but knew Dante was right about hiding his ears. That was the thing about them. Sure, they talked shit to each other most of the time, but they fed off each other, even if they’d never admit it.

Darius couldn’t say he didn’t miss it. In his world, Dante was… Was he here? The elves had mentioned their ability to create rifts into other realms was dangerous due to how little control they held over the skill. They could bring in anyone from any place and any time. Even with that explanation, arriving with his living brother seemed like a fantastical desire. Whether it was luck or fate, he was here and that’s all that mattered now.

“Hey, how about you pass me that dingy hat you took. Wouldn’t fit that melon you call a head anyway.”

Once Darius received the hat, the two would venture into town where they’d see more than just the elves and orcs they saw previously, but fairies, demihumans, and even the occasional dwarf were a new sight for both brothers in this world. Taking his own advice Darius tried not to portray too much of a shocked demeanor. He did stare at some a bit longer than he should have, but luckily only received an awkward stare back.

“Look at that place. Seafood Sensations! And this is a port town. I think I’m game.” Darius was just glad there was some normalcy in this alien world.

The relief on Dr. Bingley’s face as Viktor moved to strike Kassy died the moment the young man missed his mark.

“No…” The scientist shook his head, staring at Kassy with absolute terror in his heart. He needed someone to put her down, but the distortions were proving to be too much for everyone except… His eyes darted towards who he assumed was Alisa. It was getting more and more difficult to discern what was going on. “Cyb-” He stopped himself as he watched Kassy grab Viktor and knock him away before being struck by Aleen’a who was attempting to keep the stony-faced teen from delivering a counterattack. As if he could. Dr. Bingley and anyone else that wasn’t Kassy had no idea what was happening to Viktor at the moment. What was apparent, however, was the dip in the intensity of the optical illusions that plagued everyone in the room. This is my moment… My chance…

Meanwhile, Viktor found himself knocked away, first by Kassy, and then by Aleen’a. The world around him seemed to whirl chaotically after the quick succession of attacks while also being unable to maintain the focus of his senses. Senses that had been sharpened and amplified by H.I.V.E. and the serum the villainous organization had administered to him. The desire to collect himself was strong, but he would soon find it to be a faraway dream. A faraway dream with a parting gift from Kassy in the way. A mild pain that grew within him… No, this pain was not just within and it was only intensifying. He shut his eyes and balled his fists tight as he felt it across his skin, through his muscles, in his bones. He attempted to push it down, but it was inescapable. The pain caused Viktor’s body to curl into a tight fetal position, his thoughts no longer on the situation, the mission, or anything for that matter. All there was, was this nightmare.

“No…” The words were but a soft groan as he endured. There was no way to resist. No way to fight back against this. He was… helpless. Helpless. “Tch!” The pain kept him from even forming the words he wanted. Viktor needed the team… but weren’t they his assailants? His mind was slipping as only the brief moments before this writhing pain were replayed in his head. As if Viktor’s mind attempted to cope with his helplessness, it used Kassy and Aleen’a’s attacks and his recently surfaced gripes with the team to conjure up anything to rationalize this pain. They were hurting him, and not just the two. It was everyone. Kassy, Aleen’a, Daphne, Ja, Zach, Talon, and even Alisa. They all delivered their fair share of blows with little to no holding back. Every means of attack the team could muster was used to inflict this pain onto every fiber of his being. And eventually even this reality his mind attempted to produce took the backseat to the pure unbridled pain. That’s all it was. That’s all it was ever meant to be.

He hadn’t even noticed it. That he was screaming hysterically in a way no one could have imagined. With a crack in his scream, he lost consciousness.

This is my moment… My chance…

Dr. Bingley spotted one of the Atlantean rifle-like weapons dropped on the ground by one of the guards who had been plagued by Kass’ distortions. This was possibly the swiftest the man had moved in his entire life as he grabbed the weapon and aimed it at Kassy. He didn’t know how to formally use the weapon, but it had a trigger and a barrel which was enough for him to hold it up with confidence. The distortions were far weaker and thanks to Ja’s intervention, Dr. Bingley was sure he could land a hit.

“And it always comes down to me eliminating the threat to the many! First the squid, now you, and soon I will make sure that no Atlantean has to worry about accidentally giving birth to a monster. I wish I could say I was sorry, but...” Dr. Bingley pulled the trigger.

Caelestis awaited what would come next, and if he were being honest, he wouldn’t have expected the following events in a lifetime. Kicking the ragtag visitors out of the city seemed to be the more likely option, and the captain would have no qualms in doing so. His people had opened their gates to those escaping tyranny with a reasonable requirement. Sure, if the shoe was on the other foot, he might find surrendering his weapons unfavorable but just being here in Avian City means you have already surrendered to Malthemoor.

“Believe me, captain. I want my normal, peaceful life back as much as the next guy. One where I can walk down the streets without worrying if I'll be seeing more bodies today... The first day of this war had been harsh enough.”

“Death is the price of war. Compliance is the price of entry into our city. These are things you cannot escape.” Caelestis replied in a manner much opposite of Aiko. Direct and with a chilling cold tone. His eyes found the weapons of the group again before Yuka piped up in her excited tone that was beginning to pick at his tolerance.

“Oh that’s what you’re going on about? The weapon thing still. Are you really giving him an issue over that? He’ll give them back and even if he doesn’t, it’s just a hunk of junk. I can just fetch you new ones.” Despite not enjoying every moment she spoke, he did value her being agreeable to what was requested of the group. He wondered if she could convince her allies, but the defiant elf’s expressions said otherwise as she held him firmly in her grasp.

“Steel blades are not worth hoarding… Too heavy.” He was a little offended that anyone would think the Sky Guard would be involved in stealing swords from civilians.

“Well of course we love that idea!” It was too bad that Yuka was not the ringleader of this group. There seemed to still be more to address.

“Forgive me. I'm a little bitter, but for others, I expect bitterness is only the beginning. I have little right to comp-”

When Xavier suddenly burst free from Yuka’s grip something unbelievable occurred. Electricity crackled and flashed from his body towards her. The contingent of Sky Guard reached for their weapons in reflex. If the situation was taken without much context, Yuka had just been assaulted by Xavier.

“Assault…” One of the Sky Guard behind the captain uttered.

“Hold!” Caelestis commanded. Though he had never witnessed the magic that was just displayed, he knew what it was. Fire, air, water, earth, and lightning. These were the elements that could be tamed by the very beings summoned to Avalia. Information like this might have escaped him if not for the refugee operation. The Sky Guard were informed to seek out spies, intelligence, and humans. But why these beings? Xavier appearing as surprised as anyone else present almost answered this question. Caelestis could hear the voice of Augus from his memory.

“They are an asset, but they are also a threat! The magic these humans possess is highly volatile and without proper training or guidance, they can bring catastrophe! I am sure some of you are aware of the story, The Fury Gale! An almost mythic tale passed down through the generations. A wind that tore through our people and homes after a foolish act of cruelty! If you believe it is a myth, you are a fool. If you believe it was natural, you are simply ignorant…”

While Yuka was being tended to by the fox and the assailant, the captain turned his gaze to the scarred elf who had surrendered his weapons. It appeared as a moment where a deceptive culprit realized the gig was up. And though Caelestis desired the truth, he was not sure he was prepared for it.

“The fashion designer, as you call her, along with the vulpine, are among the few in Roshmi with the courage to stand against tyrants. These two have left their home, risked their lives to provide safety to strangers. And I, I am Prince Orias Biren of the radiant Sun Elf Kingdom, asking for aid, for a meeting with your leaders. If any of you have a health potion handy, it would be appreciated. The boy is untrained in his powers.”

Indeed it was too much and for the first time in the exchange, the captain appeared flustered and even worried.

“P-Prince? Prince Orias Biren… No, impossible.” Caelestis knew of the slain prince of Sun Elf Kingdom. Humans, dead princes… This was way above the captain’s paygrade. The best thing to do was solve the issues he could address. He reached for a pouch on his waist and removed a vial of deep red liquid. It was finally that he stepped forward with the remedy for Yuka in hand. He quickly looked back at one of the three behind him. “Inform General Maximus that I’ll be arriving shortly with something of great importance!” He shot quickly and just as swiftly, the ordered avian took off. Caelestis faced Orias’ scarred face once more. Under different circumstances, he might have laughed at Orias and his companions, but their discretion made sense. That and the display of magic was evidence enough that the group was aligned with the Sun Elf Kingdom’s higher-ups. To be responsible for one of the most powerful magical beings in Avalia was not a task easily assigned.

“Here.” He handed over the healing potion. “And pick up your weapons. Confiscation will not be necessary. I do request your party follow me to someone who will provide you with the assistance you need.”
Charlotte & Lorenzo

Time: Early Evening
Location: Carriage outside the Vikena’s Sorian Estate → The Ballroom at the Castle

Lorenzo alternated between a light jog and a brisk walk as he navigated the mansion of his large estate. Running was not an option because he would likely ruin his attire and hair with unwanted sweat. “Almost therrrre… just around this cornerrr!” Lorenzo uneasily cheered to himself as he pushed through the mansion doors and caught sight of a glorious straight-away path from his front entrance to the horse-drawn carriage. The desperate middle-aged man couldn't help but smile as he pumped his arms while he speed-walked in an effort to get a significant boost. He could see Nathaniel headed towards him which only told him that Charlotte was comfortably seated inside. I pray she did not have to wait long. His desperate smile dropped at the thought.

“Duke.” Nathaniel acknowledged with a nod. It would have been appropriate to inform him that Charlotte was inside but he was sure Lorenzo was aware. He was always last after all. Lorenzo returned the nod as he whizzed by.

“Lottie, I am…” He hopped climbed into the carriage, light beads of sweat on his forehead. “...here! I made it!” he was catching his breath as he scooched into his seat across from Charlotte. “Oh my… Lottie- Charlotte…” Charlotte was not the young girl he had met about a decade ago. “You look…” He fought back the tears in his eyes as he caught the resemblance with Emina. He now displayed a rare smile showcasing his pearly whites. The man could barely contain himself. He was just so proud but also saddened she was kept from these events for so long. “Absolutely stunning! Every flower in our garden might become green with envy, Charlotte. I mean it!”

Charlotte had been seated in the carriage, her hands folded across her torso as she waited patiently, her grip on her upper arms tight. She perked up, glancing over to beam at her father as he took his place inside. She reached over to pull the door shut, then tapped her fingers on the back of the wall. The driver took the hint quite quickly, yanking the reins. The carriage started to shake with the movement as they began to traverse towards the castle. Her expression softened at Lorenzo’s words. She could feel how proud he was and it warmed her heart. Though her parents had been loving in their own ways when they had been alive, she had always felt like nothing had been enough to ever make them proud. There had always been something more she could do, something else that could be criticized. With Lorenzo, to simply exist and be who she was was enough to light up his expression with pride and happiness.

She took his hand gently in hers and squeezed it, telling him, “Thank you, Lorenzo. Your kind heart is always a comfort. I know it’s not the traditional fashion but I do feel lovely in it.” After a pause, she gave him a slight smirk, ” And look at you in this dapper attire. What a proper gentleman. You look marvelous! I do believe us Vikenas are making an entrance to remember.” She let go of his hand as a troubling thought crossed her brain. Charlotte moved her hand over to his wrist to lift his sleeve. She bent her head to get a good look, musing in a playful tone as she was half-joking with her words, “He’s not in there again, is he?” Lorenzo pulled his arm back, retaking his sleeve with a chuckle.

“Of course NOT! I don’t think I’d ever even consider allowing King Danrose to lay an eye on Kier within the confines of our estate.” Lorenzo could recall the night as if it were yesterday. Other than the night of Emina’s death, it had been the worst night with the court he’d experienced as the Duke of Veirmont. “However, you could probably use the company. He is far better company than- Nevermind… Let me not say. You may become friends with some of them after all.” Lorenzo briefly looked from one of the windows of the carriage. He hoped he and Charlotte wouldn’t be too late.

Charlotte couldn’t help but giggle at Lorenzo’s answer, “Oh but Kier is darling company. I’d so like to let him wrap himself around my neck and bat away anyone who has something to say about it. He’s such a sweet little thing.” It was easier to speak in good regard over Kier the Ferret than to comment on the matter of friends. It had been a long time since she had seen the small number of friends she did have. Certainly, they’d be at odds with her for not making enough effort besides the occasional letter she sent the Smithwoods’ way. She too averted her gaze to the window as they made their way.

Finally, after a half-hour trip, the carriage came to a halt in front of the grand castle of the Danroses. The coachman moved over to the door to escort the Vikenas down the step of the carriage. Those that were dilly-dallying outside the castle started to attempt to gossip in hushed voices over the surprise before them. Ladies cupped their hands over their mouths as they gasped and whispered. The Vikenas were actually making an appearance after all.

“I suppose we remain renowned after all this time.” Charlotte commented as she stepped out. The crickets chirped in the ambiance of the night around them and the ambitious architecture of the Danrose’s castle remained the same as she remembered. Glancing at Lorenzo, she asked with a smile that juxtaposed how she felt, “Into the jungle?”

“I suppose so.” Lorenzo commented as he stepped out of the carriage behind Charlotte. He pulled down on his jacket to straighten it out after sitting for so long. He tried to keep his eyes from those lingering outside of the castle, their attention to him and Charlotte being uncomfortable to give notice to. Come on Lorenzo, be brave. Be confident. I am the Duke of Veirmont. I AM the Duke of Veirmont! Lorenzo raised his arm for Charlotte to take. He would not be discouraged by the riffraff, “Lady Vikena?” He said with rare confidence.

Charlotte took his arm without hesitation, “Duke Vikena.” She continued to smile at him and gave him some words of encouragement as she could imagine he must have felt as nervous as she felt deep down, “They’re going to love you once they get the chance to know the you that I know. You have a good head on your shoulders. Believe in yourself.” Her pleasant words made him beam. If he had felt ready for the ball before, he now felt as if he could conquer Eromora. With Charlotte’s faith in him, he couldn’t fail. As long as he kept her words in mind. They’re going to love me. I just have to believe in myself. This is a new start. A triumphant beginning!

“You are right Charlotte. It’s time to show the world who Duke Lorenzo Vikena is.” The two entered the castle while following along the far-reaching green carpet. The vacant halls should have unsettled the duke. It was very apparent the two were late arrivals. However, Lorenzo did not let his tardiness faze him. Fashionably late. Yes! As the two eventually approached the ballroom, Lorenzo noticed something. A good sign?

“Charlotte, the grand entrance doors! They haven’t shut yet! Charlotte, do you know what this means?” Lorenzo smiled excitedly but didn’t give Charlotte a chance to answer. “We’re not late after all! We made it before the honorary guests have.” Lorenzo could almost jump and skip into the ballroom! The man would maintain his composure. He was doing so well already and a stroke of luck would only spare his image for being slightly tardy. There was a pep in his step that had been absent moments before and it was hard for Charlotte not to notice. The moment Charlotte and Lorenzo met the grand entrance doors, the smell of fragrant aromas nearly overpowered their senses but nothing could overtake the sight of the filled ballroom after an entire year away from it. To think Lorenzo used to despise this place, but now it would be his stage for a fresh start!

To the duke, it appeared that King Danrose had cleverly hired a collection of different performers. Lorenzo wondered if King Danrose had finally decided to upscale the festivities or this was just to impress the Alidasht Kingdom.

There was an unsettling silence in the ballroom as many eyes shifted attention from the Alidasht royalty to Lorenzo and Charlotte slowly walking through the grand entrance where the foreign kingdom had just made their entrance. The dancers slowed their movements in confusion as the unexpected duo interrupted their stage.

Charlotte paused and tugged at Lorenzo’s sleeve, suggesting quietly, “Umm maybe we should wait a few minutes to come in.” Anxiety built up inside her as she worried that Lorenzo wasn’t going to read the room quick enough. Clearly, they were walking where they weren’t supposed to. He shot her a pleasant smile.

“Worry not dear Charlotte.” He looked across the ballroom he would proudly navigate. He squeezed her hand gently and slowly pulled away from her. “Go and mingle with the rest. I can do this. And thank you Charlotte.” He gave her a single nod as he felt more confident than ever. He could do this! I am the Duke of Veirmont… He took a deep breath and stepped forth. He was the center of attention now. Fashionably late and the center of attention.

Charlotte watched him go forward, trying to call his name in a hushed voice to object but it was to no avail. She cupped her face in her hands in distress then wove herself through those around her to a more polite position in the ballroom.

“Greetings! Greetings! After an entire year's absence, The Duke of Veirmont, Lorenzo Vikena has arrived!” Lorenzo announced proudly as he walked past the performers and Alidasht servants flaunting valuable items. “This! This is really a step up from the usual occasions, I must say! The Alidasht Kingdom will be quite pleased with you hiring so many performers! To dress these commoners in such flashy garb is… It’s quite incredible! Haha!” Lorenzo was finally making it closer to the chevron formation of royals. The Alidasht guards tensed as they found no comfort in some strange man being so close to the royal family. Lorenzo’s eyes spotted the exotic black tiger on the right side of the group and the cobra on the left. He was truly impressed and extremely excited. “A tamer of large cats and a snake charmer! Incredible!” He thought about how Charlotte was missing out on seeing everything this close up and turned around to catch where she had gone. He continued towards King Danrose and through the chevron formation but backward as he tried to find his precious daughter. He wanted to call her over or at least introduce her to King Danrose as it seemed that there was nothing to fear.

“HEY!” One of the guards charged toward Lorenzo due to how close he was to Sultan Raif Kadir and Grand Vizier Hafiz Kadir’s palanquins. Lorenzo quickly turned and shifted his footing, accidentally tripping the guard who ran right into one of four men holding up the Grand Vizier’s palanquin.

“Excuse you!” The palanquin swayed as its holder, who was rammed into, lost his own footing and stumbled down. The Grand Vizier’s palanquin swayed left hard and fast into the Sultan’s to immediately tip to the left and topple over. Gasps were heard from all over the room. The Grand Vizier’s palanquin continued to sway with guards rushing in to save it from falling as well but they bumped and pushed each other in their desperate attempt. It was as if the palanquin swayed for minutes until the rear slammed down causing the Grand Vizier to slide backward off of it. The guards caught his seat, but the Grand Vizier tumbled over the back-rest of his seat and onto the ballroom floor.

Lorenzo recoiled, finding the sight poor and embarrassing. He was just glad that it wasn’t him in those seats. These lot will definitely not be hired for the next occasion… But perhaps for Charlotte’s next birthday. I will just do without the elevated chairs. Seems like a waste. The guests were stunned silent and all were aghast. He skipped over a few of the fallen servants so he could advance to King Danrose’s throne.

“King Danrose! Your Duke of Veirmont is present for this special occasion. As always you look wiser each time I look upon you. And my queen, you are always a pleasure to look upon! You’ve aged like the finest of wines! A true delicacy indeed!” Lorenzo performed his customary bow before his king with the greatest pride. King Edin and everyone in the room had fallen silent. The music had halted. Finally, a voice rose from the other side of the room.

“At least he didn’t bring the ferret!”

Just as Leaf had mentioned, the water in the pool felt quite “fine.” It was cool and clear, providing relief from the hot climate of Myriamor. It really is fine… Avalia really is somethin’ He thought as he led Aurora by the hand further into the pool where she would receive compliments from both Caelan and Sophie. He noticed the slight flush in their faces and smiled with glee. Slick had always enjoyed a good time, but something pricked him like a bee in the flower field. It was the way Sophie addressed him. Cowboy? He wasn’t sure if he should be offended or just wonder why she would call him such a thing. He briefly squinted at the lady and cocked his head to the side.

“Miss Sophie… I ain’t no cowboy. Sure I got myself a horse, but I ain’t a rancher in the slightest. I wouldn’t even know where to start when it came to milkin’ cattle.” He chuckled a bit. “I’m a little more in tune with lady folk.” He winked Sophie’s way despite Caelan’s presence. Besides, it was not like Aurora could see the gesture.

As Ashari made his swift exit, Darius shrugged and looked at Dante with a grin.

“Looks like we don’t even have to pay the dude after all. And… we’re here.” Darius gazed upon the port town. The elevation where they currently stood was higher than the town itself. This gave them both a grand view of the town in front of them. Despite not looking as modern as he was used to, River Port presented itself with the familiarity of civilization. A vineyard? He spotted it to their immediate right as they entered River Port from the east. The sudden hum of an amora landing to their left caused Darius to flinch before he watched the odd aircraft land.

“Holy shit. You see that thing? It’s like a… a helicopter or somethin’” Darius and Dante would continue down the path with Darius stopping every few seconds to comment on something he’d never seen before. He never judged or scrutinized the different things he noticed. Darius’ notions leaned more towards his interest and curiosity of such things.

Before the duo truly entered the city, Darius stopped Danter with a single hand to his chest.

“Listen, before we go in there. We have to try our best to blend in with the regulars. If we see weird shit, we just smile and nod, okay? We gotta look out for ourselves. For instance, we need to grab a bite to eat. Time, now!”

Erik had witnessed the Rear Team dispatch the rest of the attacking Lost before glancing over toward Cerise. He gave her a nod, which she returned to assure him she was fine. Next his eyes locked on Poppy who flew over to the Rear Team. She hadn't landed, which caused him to slightly cock his head to the right with interest. From where he was standing, she didn't appear to need immediate attention despite being slammed down onto the roof of a car. Last was Akaia who he could spot with a bit of a squint. She appeared to be doing some cleaning up of the Lost Poppy incapacitated. The Sidhe was covered by Cerise and Lariat up above, a better guardian angel couldn't be asked for.

Now he could focus his attention on the Rear Team. Vincent and Dallas had taken quite a few licks from what he could see as he watched Poppy and Lys treat them.

“Pops is right. Good job, team. So I was- Pops?” Erik noticed Poppy lacked her usual grace when taking off from the ground. When she held her head and landed with a groan, he approached the Sidhe from behind and placed his left hand on her right shoulder as he aimed to move around her. It was the blood that stopped him from rounding to her front. “Pops… you're bleeding.” He couldn't hide the concern in his tone and then “Lys, I need an assist over here! Everyone else, maintain security so we don't get surprised!” His voice was commanding as if he was back at his time with Cerberus. He then addressed Lysandra. “Head injury. She's going to need to hang back here and grounded.” He hadn't noticed Poppy's ankle injury, as he was too distracted by what was immediately pressing. He glanced over, spotting a subtle disturbance in the air. Akaia... Always making this old man strain his eyes.

Time: Early Evening
Location: Duke Vikena's Estate
Interaction: Charlotte @princess

“No! No! No! Nooo! This simply can't be!” Lorenzo's panicked face was peering down at the invitation for the party that would welcome the Alidasht Kingdom to Caesonia this season. Gripping the paper marked with King Danrose's seal, Lorenzo faced the unfortunate fact that he was unbelievably late. He had been taking his sweet time getting ready and had silently wondered why on earth Charlotte had been locked away in her quarters so early. She was in fact on time! “Nathaniel!” He called knowing his servant was just a call away. “I'm in great need of your assistance.” Lorenzo had never enjoyed using servants for every trivial task, but this was a dire circumstance!

A formal-dressed man old enough to be his father quickly entered the room, immediately recognizing Lorenzo's frantic state as he tried on a jacket and then immediately threw it across the room the moment he felt it didn't match his trousers.

“Duke Vikena. I am here to assist.” The man was nothing but professional as he performed a customary bow. The Duke only glanced at Nathaniel before speaking.

“Inform Lady Vikena that I am running a bit late, please.”

“ I shall do this right away. Anything more?”

“No, please hurry, please… Wait! Wait!” Lorenzo turned his body toward Nathaniel with his arms flared out. “Do you think this is welcoming? I'm trying to go for ‘Warm welcome to Caesonia, foreigners!’ I want to look approachable… even if I don't want to engage in much small talk.” It was something he wouldn't be able to simply avoid. He'd been out of the public eye for so long and his social circle had shrunk down to his precious Charlotte and the parasitic Count Damien. Lorenzo knew the moment he stepped foot in the ballroom, especially late, many eyes would be on him and… Poor Lotty…

“Hm… I believe if you would increase your approachability if you were to swap out your current sash for a black one and then perhaps wear the boots over there.” Nathaniel pointed across the room to a pair of boots that would match perfectly. “And a pair of black gloves for a final touch?” Lorenzo nodded in silent agreement.

“Nathaniel, you're a lifesaver. Thank you, friend.” Lorenzo forced a smile before getting tossing the red sash he was wearing into the pile of failed attempts at piecing together an outfit. “Now, hurry to Charlotte. She must not be kept waiting without explanation.”

With Nathaniel's departure, Lorenzo quickly implemented the servant's suggestions and eyes himself in his dressing mirror. He liked what was put together. He nodded at his reflection as if to assure himself he was ready. He took a single step away from the mirror and stopped mid-stride as he caught sight of his right hand where his wedding band was worn. “Emina… you're forever safe from my embarrassment.” He kissed the band with shut eyes as if it were the woman he once loved. The silence at the moment was fitting for how he felt as he stood in the center of the room.

tick… tock… tick… tock

“AH! I must hurry! Charlotte! Charlotte I am coming! Don't you fret!” Lorenzo ran down the hall of the mansion, passing servants wearing worried expressions as they watched the duke set off to possibly tarnish his reputation yet again.
