The new subclass third rule would make sense if the deity a cleric worships has multiple domains. But if it has only one? Then it's like the Warlock Patron issue again.
Though...I can see that being resolved if the Cleric is able to switch the deity they worshipped before Level 3. For example, The Cleric realized that the initial deity they were worshipping was not something they believed to be and went against their beliefs. So they realized the 'Church' they were a part of was actually a cult. At this revelation they decided to worship a different deity that was vilified or dismissed in the cult, and gains the full domain powers as a result of seeing the truth.
