“I have to say I quite missed this.” Alvis mused as he nipped at his pumpkin soup. “Ministry lunches are a pale shade of what the elves at Hogwarts manage to cook up. Budget cuts, eh? Hmm, even has some hints of smoke to it, fancy! Oh hi, Cifaretto.” He acknowledged his senior Hufflepuff as he joined and made himself quite at home, to some furore from the group about his habits. And for a second, Alvis paused and wondered how he would manage when his students would get rowdy in class. He may have been an auror, but he never was very good with discipline. He mostly just anticipated it, and then avoided it. He shrugged to himself, then continued eating. That time would come when it would come…

Then the topic came to something intriguing: the future headmaster. He remembered how the news of the restructuring came as a shock when it broke, even at the ministry. Quite the mystery, indeed. He stared off into the distance a little, his spoon left hovering in the air as he did. Then, as always when he started a case, he started rattling:

Curious. I haven’t gotten any hints about that at the Aurors, but then again, we are known for keeping secrets. So who else, then? I think if Mr. Potter himself would even only have been a candidate, the rumours would’ve been out of control, even if we did put out a wholesale ban on owls. Still, it does all seem to be somewhat politically motivated, does it not, what with the restructuring coming from the Ministry? One of the Ministers themselves? I doubt we’re important enough for the Prime, but I could see muggle and wizard relations improving if that were the case. So, one of the Weasleys?” He stroked his almost-there o’clock stubble with his spoon, absent-mindedly coloring it with some leftover pumpkin soup. “I think what’s most interesting is that there hasn’t been any reliable news or leaks about it at all, to be honest. One of the Unspeakables then, perhaps? But then how would we ever know? Puzzling, puzzling.” Then, adding to himself, he muttered. “I’ll have to set up an idea board in my office for this case.”

”Yes, quite. You may be right.” Ellion said to Amalia as he finally took the time to look around the busy scene. It was a good thing she was with him. Why hadn’t he thought of that? Must’ve been the nerves, from the aftermath of the crash. Yes, that was it. But there were so many people! Who would be able to help them? Who, indeed, could even be trusted? He looked suspiciously at a child staring at them from a distance, licking on some syrupy piece of dandelion stalk. No, not that one, definitely not. Then, he saw two people shuffling by: one young teen, and one that may well have been his grandfather, following their noses. They didn’t seem to be too dangerous.

Ellion shared a look with Amalia, then tightened his lips in concentration as he drew up the brass fastener on his cape, a habit to make himself appear presentable that he picked up from the Collegeon’s uniforms. He nodded to himself in self-encouragement, then he stepped towards the duo, and cleared his throat, with not exactly a small sense of insecurity to it.

”Excuse me, but we seem to have wandered into this town by… accident. Might you be so friendly as to tell us where we are, and what’s going on?”

@Red Wizard For your consideration:

@Red Wizard Thinking of writing up a Dwarven Cleric, nice and classic. Every party needs a healer, after all. (cough, and some tasteful moral busybodying, cough)

Did you have any ideas for deities? Else I'll make up a generic-enough dwarf-appropriate one to flavor the cleric with.

Also, what would you say is an acceptable age-range for dwarves/elves?

Kais Zenix @ASZenix:
"Not the result I wanted, but that's racing. Props to the team for gluing the ship back together. Shame I couldn’t push it as much as we wanted.
@MadBea: Hope you’re doing well, that was a rough one. Rest up, and see you back on the track soon.

Formula AG Championship: Round 2
South African AGP, Cape Town

Through the shimmering heat that was the track at Cape Town, Kais held a steely gaze upon the starting lights.

5. 4. 3. 2. 1.

And off they went.

Acceleration kicked Kais in his seat. Al-Saqr’s ships were a beast to fly. The mechanic wasn’t wrong. The ship really was just one giant brick of repulsors going one way: forward and onward. The first few laps went by in a blur, straight and hard, up and down. What a track! Then Bea came up beside him for an overtake. Kais pushed his craft to hug close to Nora in front. It wasn’t a true overtake, but it would take up some space at least. Bea didn’t seem deterred. The readings on the sensors that had auto-focused on her started decreasing. Decreasing. Decreasing. Then, forcing his way through the corner: Jamie Hart.

Then BEEPING! At least four different alarms forced themselves into his mind as the craft shook violently and lurched, as if pushed and sucked into a vortex, and with a heavy bang almost half of his experience turned to static for a few seconds. Kais breathed hard as he fought for balance, but that fucking handling! Other ships flew by as he regained what wobbly speed he could. Then the red flag notification popped up in one of the higher parts of his mind, and only then did he stop to notice the carnage left behind. Busted mag parts scattered around the track. And half a Wiphala ship in tatters.

“Command, status! What the hell was that?”

“Unsure. The detectives are on the case, Kais. But the red flag’s out, return to the pits and we’ll have you checked out. Ward looks to be out, massive damage. How are you doing?”

“Still flying.”

The pit drones were already waiting for him. When the scans were completed, the mechanics immediately came in after them. 3D printers started whirring, and the disembarking steps were rolled out. The young mechanic from before climbed up to help detach Kais from his still-beeping coffin, from his helmet, and get him down. Farouk, his nametag said, now that Kais took a moment to look at it. Medical crew came up for check-ups, and were then brushed off as quickly as Kais could. He looked back to his craft, then to Farouk. “Give me the bad news, then go deal with it.”

“Wings are clipped, some deep scratches, and a few AG drive sections have been knocked offline. Replacement patches are being printed as we speak, and the damaged drive blocks are being switched out.”

“What about Ward? She didn’t give me an inch there. Reckless idiot.”

“The Queen Bee seems done for today. Nothing too serious-looking on the footage, but she’ll probably be stuck at medical for some time anyway, after a crash like that…”

“I’ll take it.” Kais grumbled. He would've liked the rematch.

“I’m in a good position for a restart after the red flag, Kais, so I might be able to make some gains.” Layla chimed in over the comms. “Safe to say what strategy we’re gonna go for now.” She poked at him to lighten the mood.

“Fine. I’ll keep the others at bay. Might still make some gains on the straights, though, even with a scratched-up ship, so don’t think you’ll be safe from me just yet.”

“That’s better. I was getting worried there for a second.”

“Make it count, Layla. Hart’s ass better hurt after this race…”

Farouk came back around as the pilots entered their ships again. He reported on the maintenance as he double-checked Kais’ safeties: “Patches are applied, pulse blocks should be good to go, but we weren’t able to integrate the sensors as well as you like in this short a time. Might stagger a bit on the left. And the sensor readings might feel a bit raw, but this is all we can do for now! Sorry, uh… sir!” The young mechanic said, almost hesitantly.

“Chin up! We’re not done with this race yet, it’ll hold!”

[Welcome to live chat! Remember to follow our community guidelines]
[HyperForMore]: Layla got luckyyyy with that restart after the red flag. You reckon Nora feels the heat yet?
[YallaFanNotABot]: Layla is *so* flying under the radar right now. I’d put some good money on her, if I had some.
[RadNad74]: Yeah she's cool 😊
[ZenixRising]: Messy overtake? More like JAMIE CAN’T HANDLE THE PRESSURE!!
[ZenixRising]: Kais would've been top 3 by now without all that [Naughty Word!]. Boxing match, anyone?
[TIE_Fighter]: Yeah, we’re not going to forget this one. But Zenix must focus.
[ZenixFanatix]: Bro, Kais is a monster. Man’s pure hate-driving now. Glorious.
[QueenBeaForever]: He needs to calm down already.
[QueenBeaForever]: Bea didn’t deserve that! im crying
[TT_0785]: ikr, that’s what Al-Saqr calls their S-game? Crash a racer that comes too close for comfort? Does the S stand for shit?
[RadNad74]: It was an accident, calm down. And they’re pushing back well enough.
[TT_0785]: Oh please. Remember what position Ulrich was in when he crashed last time? And now Bea? Coincidence?
[RadNad74]: Commentators said it was an air pocket by Jamie or something. I don’t know, I’m not a physicist.
[TT_0785]: They also say never let a good accident go to waste. I bet he’s been waiting for this moment.
[TT_0785]: They don’t call him the Meteor for nothing.
[UsahDrrrei]: Whatever, man, nobody got hurt. Just enjoy the chaos.
[RadNad74]: Also, don’t come to a fan stream if you’re just gonna shit on stuff.

At the Interview

Kais, you must be feeling a lot right now! An excellent recovery drive, but you must be gutted about not being able to press more positions throughout the race following your contact with Ward?

"Gutted? I'm pissed!" Kais said, throwing up his hand. "We had the speed, and a clean shot for the top, and then we lost out because of someone else’s sloppy moves. Sloppy, and reckless. Dive-bombing like that. Unbelievable." He shook his head as he looked off-camera, to whom would be any viewer's guess. But one could certainly guess with a reasonable degree of accuracy. "We made the most of it, Layla got in some good gains. And I'm not just gonna be backing down after a stunt like that. I fought every lap to recover and keep those positions. Fought my own damn damaged craft. And next time, I'm gonna fight just as hard. They're gonna have to keep scrapping me to keep us down. And Beatrix, hope you're well. That's it."

Party crackers all around, everyone! Happy RPing!

"Alright, alright, Let's think this through." The young man muttered absentmindedly as he made his way through the town square. Children played, gigantic dandelions swayed in the wind, and market stalls sold their wares in celebration of some festival or another, but Ellion was very much unaware about all the goings on, and very much un-blissfully so. He exhaled slowly to try and calm himself down. "Yes. Yes, let's think this through. Again." Thinking it through had not been a good idea, not for the last five times he tried it. The glider he had stolen crashed because of it. And now he was... well, here. "Oh gosh, the Collegeon's gonna expel me for this aren't they? My parents are gonna kill me." He pulled his cape's hood close over his pale face and hair, his violet eyes flitting around like an animal on the run, which he very much was. Yankind had bounty hunters for runners like him. For those who had stolen something of value from the Hegemony.

Or rather, for those who had helped them to escape, in Ellion's case. "Whatever we do, let's not cause a scene. We want to lay low." He said, as he paced after the companion in question. Cloaked in similar travel capes, the pair didn't stand out too much, but there was something undeniably... magical, ancient and alien about her. "We need to find passage away from here, some way off-rock. But where would we even go? Ahh, what a nightmare..." He said as he counted what leftover Zenit he had managed to scrounge together from his trunk before the two escaped from the Collegeon's archaeological camp.

Ellion went on to walk beside her, leaned in and whispered, almost conspiratorially. "Hey, Amalia, don't you have, like, a databank inside you or something? On... I don't know, places we could go? Oh what am I saying, from what century out-of-date would they even be? We don't even know where we are now!"

Episode 2: Hunting Apex

Saturday March 18th, 2094
Cape Town, South Africa

The views of Cape Town were something else. Glittering spires of glass and greenery amidst the managed wilderness of the mountain range and the Atlantic coastline. It was a testament to the tenacity of the human spirit. To not dwell on the darker times of history, but to make it grow instead. And grow it had: even the once-threatened Fynbos had made a comeback to give extra color to the environment, and the holograms in celebration of the race, of the animals extinct-no-more, made the event a true spectacle. If only Kais had the time to appreciate it all through the blur of speed. His qualification lap had just ended, and as he glided into the pit for checkups and took off his helmet, he shared his thoughts with the crew.

“Bias the glare auto-filters more towards .7 when we get out from under Table Mountain’s shadow. Sun’s killing out there.”

“Yeah, we hadn’t noticed,” the young mechanic said as he rolled up the disembarking steps, sweating buckets. And bullets too when Kais shot him a glare against which the mechanic had, so to say, no auto-filters to match. “I mean… Copy that… sir?”

“Hmm… Everything else seems okay enough. Speed’s solid, energy system's solid, no signs of overheating. But handling in the vertical is still easier than the horizontal.”

“Well, the ship is made to be maximally forward-driving, it’s basically a brick-shaped drive array, and that just lends itself more to vertical handling than horizontal. Should work well enough for this track.” The mechanic started to turn back to his duties before he seemed to remember something else: “...and ‘okay enough’? The two of you have ended in P4 and 6!”

“You heard me.”

At the Interview

Well, that was quite something from both of you, Layla and Kais! You must be excited for the race tomorrow and look to take a solid point haul, what with the huge speed advantage you seem to have on the rest of the midfield?

“Indeed, Aurora, the engineers have worked their [CENSORED] off to make our ships fly fast. Now it’s up to us to do what we do best and make them fly hard.”

Well, it sounds like last time out, you both had your sights locked on Nora and Harrison. Have you got any words for the Southern Cross pair?

“Hmm… Southern Cross had a strong run, but so did we. I’d wish them luck, but words are cheap. Let our racing tomorrow do the talking. And if Nora and Harrison get in the way? Well, we’ll make certain they know we’re coming.”

Al-Saqr Garage: Strategy Meeting

“Man, this brings back memories…” Omar said as he watched Yasif, Al-Saqr’s lead simulation analyst, pull up graphs and simulated race visualizations. “One of my first jobs with Al-Saqr -waaay back when- was in financial analysis, actually. The green lines were my favorite.”

“Fascinating…”

“Hear that? Next thing you know you’ll be Team Principal.” Layla said. Yasif nearly choked on his coffee. “Oh believe me that’s not my ambition, not even in 15 years I don’t think I’ll be ready. I’ve heard dealing with the military contacts alone is a real hassle.” “Oh, you have no idea.” Omar said as he winked at Kais. He didn’t wink back.

“Ah, there! See this?” Yasif nearly jumped out of his seat to point at one of the lines that had appeared on-screen. The trio looked over his shoulder. It would’ve been almost uncomfortable, if the guy wasn’t positively giddy about an insight they’d had. Al-Saqr had a team devoted to gathering as much data from races that they could, from drone footage and video feeds to internal metrics, and wrangling it all into a digital representation the best they could. Then they would use it to create profiles on the racers, and extrapolate how they might race future tracks. There was more uncertainty than certainty, of course: they couldn’t predict opposing ships’ upgrades before the fact, and reducing people to a set of model parameters was more than a fool’s errand, but if the talks during their way-past-9-to-5 ‘fun-and-mezze-nights’ were any indication, it made for interesting speculations at the very least. “Nora likes racing aggressively. Boom, see there? Dives straight into the apex. And the majority of simulations of the Lion’s Head say she might do the same with the vertical apex there. Fast over, then straight down. *swoosh* That’s exactly where you might find space for the M-Strike. Gonna be tricky, though. Pull back too late, and Kais The Meteor might go down in history as The Meteorite instead.”

“You know she’s going to try to counter us, Kais,” Layla pitched in, her face betraying a hint of doubt about the whole thing. “Especially when you give the mags some slack in that maneuver. I worry she’s got some tricks from the Underground up her sleeve.”

“Well, there’s your problem.” Kais said. “I never worry when I’m racing.”

“I know, that’s why I’m saying it now,” Layla bit back. “Don’t push your luck too much in the descents. There are plenty of other options for overtakes. And if we work together, we have a real chance to push our way into the top 3 here.”

“We, or just you?” Kais asked. He wasn’t oblivious to the implication hidden in her words: keep Nora engaged as I fly past you both.

“Be nice.” Omar chimed in. “Anything could happen tomorrow. And a good result for either of you is good for the team. For now, just focus on punching it on the straights and climbs, play to our strengths until the wizards at engineering finish their upgrades. I’ll have the radio guys keep you updated during the race on what the telemetry and behavioral analyses say. We’ll see what we can afford then. Well done, Yasif.” And with a collegial slap on Yasif’s shoulder, he turned to check-up on the next team.

“Thank you, sir.” Yasif returned. Hesitantly he looked at Kais, who decided not to slap him quite yet, before he turned and walked away.

At the Cafeteria

Kais was pacing around the team cafeteria, slurping up his dinner through a straw when Layla spotted him and decided to join him. “You know, you could try eating more than just those nutrition packs every now and then.”

“Easier this way.” Kais shrugged. “And I like the strawberry ones.”

“Remind me to organize a team event with some actual cooking someday.” Layla responded. “Speaking of organization, why’d you leave Nadia back at HQ?”

“Not my call. Omar said she asked for more time to work with Tewe and engineering… Besides, she’s been avoiding me lately.”

“That so?” Layla raised an eyebrow. “Must’ve been your handsome smile. It can be intimidating, you know.”

“Must’ve been your humor. It’s not that funny.”

“Must’ve been your stellar sense of team-spirit.”

“Hmm… You done? Aired everything?”

“Oh, let me get my list.”

“Let’s not. I can already guess what’d be your number 1 anyway: that I don’t just let you be our number 1 by default.”

Layla smiled like she was caught with her hand in the cookie jar. “Alright, alright, fair, fair. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see what strat the boss chooses tomorrow. In the meantime…”

“Punch it on the straights and climbs…” Kais finished the sentence with a small smirk.

As Layla went on to grab her own dinner, Kais turned, but seemed to be in two minds about walking away this time. He turned toward her again. “One more thing. About Nadia.”

Message Log: Nadia (Intern)

Kais:
“Be glad you’re not here now. I think I’ve seen some of the crew actually melting out there.”
“The energy systems you worked on with engineering's working a treat. I might very well be the coolest of the bunch during the race.”

Nadia:
“Thanks. I’ll pass on the compliment. The boys will be happy to hear that :)”

Message Log: YALLAAAAA

Nadia:
“Did you put Kais up to this?”
Layla:

ZNX-5-01: “'Atraf” [Acknowledged]

“When I was birthed, the Water Wars had been raging for close to 4 years already. Being fifth-generation of my gene-seed, even I don’t know exactly what the early years looked like, or what truly kicked it off into full-blown warfare, and I don’t think we ever will. No matter what future history books will say, I know it wasn’t clear-cut, it never was. It was chaos then. Factions and strategies shifted almost daily, what motivated them did so too. And the staging for the wars themselves had been a century in the making. Do you know who the original founders of the Arabic Union were? Oligarchs. Oil sheikhs. Private militias. Foreign investors. An untouchable bunch of obscenely rich people who clawed up as much power and influence as they could. They controlled the black gold before. Now they would control the blue. And people knew. They knew what the rationing would be like, and who would be on the bottom of the priority queue, or on the bottom of the boot for that matter. Entire provinces were uprooted as the Union’s Waterworks consolidated the streams their families had fostered for generations, leaving them to trek through desert and warzone to get to the -conveniently- Union-controlled urban centers. There, many of them dehydrated anyway, or died from disease, and many of those that survived turned to begging, scavenging, prostitution, crime, worse… Rinse. Repeat. And so it went. They were very bleak years. Many died, before an equilibrium was finally reached. And in the end, it took over ten years before the Union was finally said to be victorious. The region stabilized; a conquered land always does, in one way or another. All for the best, I suppose…”

Location: Red Sea Hills, nearby Al-Galala city, North-Eastern Egypt
Target: Al-Galala Military Water Depot
Objective: Sabotage a key water depot for the Al-Galala military zone, supplying the Union’s military operations in the desert regions of eastern-Egypt.

Rebel Forces:
Union Forces:
  • 12 operatives, incl. 2 supersoldiers
  • 2 Exomech suits, in DesertCryptic adaptive camo
  • 4 Light vehicles, 4x Sonar, 2x RPGs, 2x infrared painters
  • Explosive charges
  • Assault weapons loadout
  • 36 security guards
  • 12 misc. security crew
  • 8 Light vehicles

Phase 0: Briefing/Prep (14:00 - 14:30 LT)

Command: “Attention: High-priority. Objective is to disable Union hub [COORDS: ENCRYPTED]. Expect heavy resistance. You have 24 hours for execution and extraction. Satellite feeds show three drones patrolling randomized routes. Use the cover of night for insertion. Distraction and stealth is imperative. Signal for detonation is three bursts on the comms. Return, or leave no trace. The Water Will Flow.”
ION/ZNX: “Acknowledged.”

Phase 1: Infiltration (02:00 - 03:30 LT)

In the dark of night the desert grew deathly cold. Comms chatter was minimal, and even when decrypted, it would’ve only vaguely sounded like one of the regional languages. Words were shortened, phrases were minimized, meanings unambiguated. In a war as asymmetric as this, all that counted was ruthless efficiency. And that, they were...

ION (02:02): “Approaching compound.”
ZNX (02:12): “In position. Give status, Recon.”
Recon Lead (02:14): “Potential weak points in the perimeter. Sending coordinates. We’ll distract the patrols, putting IR-patches down now. Standby for engagement.”
Recon Lead (02:24): “Engaging.”
ZNX/ION (02:25): “Moving in.”
ION (02:35): “Jump-packs engaged. Bypassing security fence.”
ION (02:36): “Done.”
ZNX (02:36): “Infiltrating the compound.”
Recon Lead (03:42): “Drones are down. Another security contingent has exited the compound. Engaging.”
ZNX (02:58): “Acknowledged. Taking the south section.”
ION (02:58): “Taking north.”

Phase 2: Assault (03:00 - 04:00 LT)

Recon Lead (03:02): “Secondary alarm has been triggered. You’ve been spotted. We can’t help you now.”
ZNX (03:03): “Better move quick. Planting charges.”
ZNX (03:15): “Encountering hostiles. Engaging.”
ZNX (03:19): “Three guards neutralized.”
ZNX (03:25): “Final charge planted. Extracting.”
ZNX (03:29): “Got more hostiles.”
ZNX (03:36): “Hostiles down.”
ION (03:39): “Final charge planted. Extracting. Try not to blow it all before I’m out, Z.”

Phase 3: Extraction (03:45 - 05:00 LT)

ION (03:45): “Got some hostiles on my 6. Calm down, we’re leaving already.”
Recon Lead (04:00): “Stay sharp. Union forces are advancing towards your position.”
ZNX (04:03): “Providing covering fire.”
ZNX (04:10): “Arrived at Rendez-vous point. Execute: [ENCRYPTED KEY 1].”
ION (04:13): “Execute: [ENCRYPTED KEY 2]. Let’s get loud.”
(04:14): Three short bursts

Then, for a fraction of a second, the starry night briefly turned to day as the compound went up in a mass of fire, debris and water plumes.

ZNX (04:16): “Target destroyed. Returning to base. Prepare medical unit; arm injury.”
Recon Lead (04:18): “Negative. Divert, dig down and lay low. Union forces are on high alert and tracking your exit route. We’ll give the return signal. Mission success.”
ZNX/ION (04:19): “Acknowledged.”

Phase 4: Propaganda (06:00 - ...)

(on repeat) “To the leaders of the self-styled Arabic Union: You have taken the water of life from our people and built your power on their deaths and oppression. We did not want to be your enemy, but you leave us no choice. Withdraw your soldiers and return what you stole, or face the consequences. You will drown in your greed. To the People: They will say we are your enemy. But we are your Brothers and Sisters, your Nieces and Nephews, your Uncles and Aunts, your Mothers and Fathers! And together, we will fight those who try to take our future! Look out for us! We will come bearing gifts! The Water Will Flow!”

@Bacon This. In my opinion the strength of Fate is that it is designed to reward players when they think in terms of ups and downs, getting themselves into interesting scenario's, etc., instead of just auto-succeeding at everything and never really engaging with personal adversity. That requires players to be on that wavelength, though. If they only see the dice rolls as mechanics, it won't work. If they can come to see the dice rolls as being little moments of tension, that's when it comes alive. This is also why we (as GMs) are going to have to make the dice rolls count, insert them at the right moments, etc. We won't be rolling for everything and anything. A general GMing rule of thumb in any system is to only roll when success or failure both can be interesting. Else it's just wasting time.

@duskshine749 True, but you might say that about any RPG. Unless it's completely freeform and the players are in total control, you always have times where you need to wait for GM to resolve important story beats. Besides, there are ways to mitigate this. We can pre-roll defense rolls for enemies, for example, so you as players can check for yourselves on whether attacks succeed or not, and resolve accordingly.

@Kuro Might feel that way, doesn't have to be. See above. The trick's gonna be to make the system count. We won't be rolling for every single thing, don't worry, and we will implement ways to try to keep the flow going. But it will probably take some experimentation and getting in the flow of things at the start (not gonna lie), and honest feedback, participation, and cooperation from players. If players are pre-determined to not be on board or to sink the ship, of course it's not going to work. In other words: it's just as much in your hands on whether this succeeds or not ;)

I hope this clears things up, and settles any worries people might have had. Remember: this is our hobby too, so as GM's, we're as invested as you guys to make this fun and engaging. As long as everyone stays honest, I wouldn't know why this wouldn't work.

As for dice rolls and Discord: we don't have to use it. I already linked another roller above. Those rolls won't be checkable, of course, but we can still use that one and decide to operate on the honor system.
