Hunting for the Perfect Thought.
Apologies for my lateness. Life is busy. Sometimes I struggle to write as well as I want.

@PerfectThought sorry! I was very tired when I posted that. Do we need to have one picked out and put in the profile?

If so, what is "all the usual" for the British university system?

The misunderstanding is probably on my end, not yours so don't worry haha. You'll probably want to mention your reason for coming to Gloomminster under the history tab.

Unfortunately I've never attended university, so I don't have an especially deep understanding of the British or US university systems, but what I meant is that students puck a subject based course that they study and that is largely what their time in university is devoted to, whereas (as far as I understand) US degrees are more generalised than UK degrees. All core faculties are available in some form or another, english, humanities, mathematics, the sciences.

However think lf Gloomminster as analogoud to like... Magic Oxford. You go there for the Arcane studies, or the brand of it. Not because their other faculties are anything particularly special. There are better places for mathematicians or other such than Gloomminster.
If it's alright, I'd like to give this a shot? I struggle with SoL, and could use the practice, and I like the sound of the premise.

Glad to have you!

Hmm. Seeing as I am in need of a SoL style RP (and love fantasy/magic vibes) I might put my hat in.

To be clear, all mythilogical/fantasy species are allowed? Within reason of course.

Yep, as long as you aren't making like an omnipotent murder cube or something.

Woo! Question re: Gloo U - do we need to have a course of study?

Bit confused, not sure what you'd do there unless you had a course to study? It goes by the British University system, so no liberal arts degree or however it works in the US. Gloomminster offers all the usual + an extensive range of arcane courses.

@AriiBird

Yep you can have an elf. I'll make the first IC post when we have a few CS's in, so there's not really much point waiting to submit it.

May I also join? I have a species I kinda wanna try my hands on.

I'd be happy to have you aboard. B)
Awesome! What kinds of magic are in this in this world? For example elemental magic, necromancy, enchanting... anything out of bounds?

Uhh nope. All on the table, just keep it reasonable. Also consider if your character is going to the university to study magic, they likely aren't a master wizard. Nor would they jave to rent such a cheap apartment if they were a master wizard of some form.

Also, just to clarify, is this whole world aware of magic existing? Or is this magical area separated from a "muggle" modern part of the world or something.

Yes, the whole world is aware. It's a reasonably commonplace thing. And fantastical creatures are pretty everyday.
Life in Gloomminster

Setting:
Gloomminster is an ancient and baroque city of dark alleyways and hidden crevices. And at the heart of the dark city sits Gloomminster University a sprawling complex of buildings and faculties, the most prestigious of which being the Arcane faculty, which focuses on studies of the arcane and magic.

For you see, the world in which Gloomminster belongs too is much like ours, with similar cultures, nations, histories, and technologies. Except for one key difference. That being that the beings, powers, and people that we believe to be merely myths and folktales really do exist. And though some are malicious and predatory, many exist happily alongside humans in one multi-species society.

Now, a brisk five-minute walk from the heart of Gloomminster you'll find yourself in the jaunty (if rather dingy) port-side environ of West Sprontside. Though a rough area, it's not without its certain charms. For example the legendarily friendly locals, or the surprisingly good port-side view unto the Great Bentrane. Not to mention its unmatched fresh fish prices.

In an obtuse corner of West Sprontside, near the University you'll find a small bookshop, with a chipped lettering above the door reading 'Cunningham's Bookshop and Binder's. Inside you'll find a warmly lit interior, a cosey fireplace, and walls completely lined with full-to-the-brim bookcases and a great many disorganised piles of books as they spill out from the bookcases. In one corner sits a battered wooden desk, piled up with books and a single huge antique IBM cash register (with the clackety keys and all!) Behind the counter, in a threadbare wingback chair twice the size of her person, you can usually find the undersized yet still eccentric owner: Bonnie Cunningham.

Premise:
Being a group of newcomers to the city of Gloomminster at the beginning of the University year, players will be fresh tenants of Bonnie Cunningham's. Living in the series of boarding rooms above her beloved bookshop. Given the low cost of the rooms, characters presumably aren't particularly cash-riddled (though that's not a hard rule, if your character is going to be wealthy, there must be a reason why they're staying in such cheap rooms in a less-than-reputable area). Also given the proximity of Cunningham's to the University, and the time of year players will likely be new students at GU (not a rule, just a suggestion).

Over the course of the RP, you will learn more about Bonnie, the Bookshop, the City, the other characters, and the University. Player interactions and relationships will be the main driving force of the RP, but I will use the city and my character (Bonnie) to help facilitate such happenings. As well as throwing in a couple of events and festivals as such-so.

Rules:
Overall, use common sense. Don't be a dick. Don't post your CS straight into the characters tab without approval. Follow the site rules. All the usual. If people want to do romance, that's fine but keep it PG13 in the thread. I won't be enforcing a post-order, but if the players decide one is needed something can be worked out. If the need for a discord arises I'll make one. Until then I like to keep OOC active as it helps promote a healthy momentum. Overall the world-building is pretty flexible, and I'll be pretty flexible with who/what is accepted.

I'm no formatting wizard, so feel free to modify that base as you wish, add sections as you please, and take bits off if you really want, but those basics should all be covered in some regard in the CS.

Other than that, a floor plan of the bookshop, and possibly a city map will be up as soon as they're complete. Feel free to PM me on any issues or queries. Or anything really.
Wow, a lot of interest in a lot shorter time period than I expected! Thanks. B)

Currently working on an OOC, world-building bits and pieces, and the aforementioned land-lady. Should be up soon(-ish) if all goes according to plan.

P.S. If anyone is interested in co-GMing/talking about lore & worldbuilding please PM me. :) Also if anyone knows any good fantasy city map generators or similar please let me know, not sure how to do it atm without just heavily editing a map of oxford. ☠
Can I do something outside of British folklore?

Yeah, of course. All the usual fantasy beats are game. And most likely anything else! :)

I don't really have strict world-building yet, so people's contributions are very much appreciated!

I'll probably get the OOC up soon, which will contain more details B)
@Periodity
Don't want this neat RP to stall. Any ETA when IC will be up? :)
Still up, just waiting on more interest.

Finished overall, though might considering adding on some of the optional portions. :)
