Ok. I guess you've never had a RPG with elemental buffs. Or spellfencers. Or watched Madoka/Nanoha/Symphogear.

Feel free to understand that way.

@IncredibleBee
The other character who also uses mundane firearms, Katherine, also actually has a magical power related around barrier-creation.

Not really my problem to answer these questions though, so I guess you can wait for the GMs to clarify. Not even sure when the 'firearms do nothing' rule was put up, cause the second incarnation literally had a robot/cyborg thing as a character...but then again, he never actually did any fighting.

RPGs with elemental buffs only increase damage, not ramp it from zero to a hundred. And they're often applied to mundane warriors in the first place.
Granted, RPGs often have an enemy or two that's immune to physical damage, but conversely they will also have an equal number of enemies entirely immune to magical damage, and have to be killed with mundane attacks.

Even if some Youkai are intangible, I imagine many are still physical. Even if they have heavy armor, they're still flesh. Furthermore, you still haven't explained what makes "magic" guns different from regular ones.

Again, there's no discernable different between the monster getting a stab wound from a sword, or one of Hawlin's thorns or GrafRoy's ice spears.
And another character also uses mundane firearms. What about her?

I can answer for Kat.

Those firearms? They're mostly for distractions and whatnot. I never intended for them to be a major play in her arsenal. Distract, stun. Plus, she does have magic, which she will use to the fullest extent of her abilities. She's just a military girl and loves her guns and likes using them because it makes her feel warm and fuzzy inside. She however, also realizes her guns probably aren't going to do much to stop a youkai. Especially if said youkai is made out of steel or something that's not flesh/stronger than flesh.

The only one of her firearms I see doing any sort of damage, is if she shoots something in the face with her Shotgun. And even then, I doubt it'll do much.

And I have no problem with any of this, since it's the way I intended for it to be.

@Ashifili
I built my character around magical buffs in the hope I would be wrong about this assumption and that raw grit would have any merit.

If I am wrong, than j8cob's character shouldn't exist (Sorry to sell ya down the river, but a conventional pistol versus a vamp?). I don't watch anime like those and assumed 'anime elements' involved comedic interactions, tense combat and 'unsung heroes'.
This is not what I thought the thread was. I am set up for what this thread is, but the answers for my old questions leave a bad taste in my mouth.

I'm not a fan of "Magic girl" threads.

I also figured that a lot of Youkai have really high physical abilities and that anything stronger than like, low-tier grunts can tank small arms. But instead of magic, I gave Vincent access to really high power weaponry, like miniguns or oversized melee weapons. Even his physical stats were designed around letting him go toe to toe with something like an Oni in a fist fight.

The way i see it is like in a god fight. no mortal man can stand up to a god, but make him a demi-god and suddenly he has enough power to fight for the lesser man. not so much that he's doing anything different, just granted access by the laws which govern that universe.

So...I'm not quite sure what the problem here is. Not every Youkai is going to tank bullets. As KoL said before, it really is random. But that being the case, it's still going to hurt like hell if you shoot, say, a rocket at them. Or a buttload of high caliber bullets from a minigun. It'll take longer to kill them, sure, but it will still cause a mess as long as the firepower is ramped up.

That demi-god nonsense only works in Percy Jackson.

There's plenty of shows and even legends in which normal humans have fought magical beings or even gods and won. Even in Greek myth, Odysseus was a normal human who pissed off Poseidon, and he still came out on top. He killed a bunch of monsters and went on all sorts of adventures.

I think everyone sort of took KoL's words too literally to a degree. By all means guys, you can have guns and other conventional weapons if you want. It's just that magic is usually a more reliable way of dealing with Youkai. But big guns can still get the job done.

well, that was only one example. the same checks and balances work in a lot of different universes

My understanding is that bullets are like this in Chasers. It takes a large quantity of bullets to make up the significant difference in the quality of magic.

Think this scene from "A Bugs Life"

@Hawlin Lucille isn't really SoL in combat at all. Her handgun is almost useless but she's a goddamn vampire. She doesn't need it. She can still rip Youkai to shreds.

My understanding was that physical attacks had little effect. How strong is Lucille, anyway? Lifting cars is one thing, but if it takes a halestorm of bullets to deter a single youkai...

Bare fists?

Throwing cars is one thing, but she isn't really a fisticuffs kind of gal. If she's putting her hands on an enemy it would be to pull them apart. Obviously something intangible would have nothing to fear, but only the sturdiest of monsters would stay in one piece. Or the fastest ones she simply can't catch.

Gosh, it's always like this, I go sleep and the world falls apart faster than the Hindenburg diving in sea of gasoline. Anyway, this is kind of a pointless discussion, as @McFazzer and @TheWindel explained.

When was it that I said that any of your characters was useless?

Sure, there are many/a lot of Youkai that can't be defeated with conventional weaponry and such, but it's obviously meant to say that everyday men can't take on them with a pistol and such, Chasers defy the logic of the world by merely existing so they can do things that are otherwise impossible. Shooting an Oni with a pistol is like a mosquito wound, but a shotgun to the face, or an antimateriel riflçe would be able to deal some decent damage.

The thing with guns/physical combat is, if you're gonna rely on them, better become a badass and a creative one at that, but you can kill Youkai with them. Magic is just more reliable/safe. While on that, a spike of stone made with magic and a cannon shell would do the same kind of damage really (and would equally be unable to hurt a ghost), but a toothpick covered in a telekinetic field could do the trick.

It isn't hard to conceive these ideas based on what has been said/the first OOC and the Glossary, really that was a pointless discussion IMO.

Anyway, on to important matters:

@IncredibleBee@Shisa

You are both accepted, unless Windel and Fazzer have something to say about your characters, that is. You can place them on the CS tab, ASAP.

Actually, I liked them both very much, and have plans for Vincent, involving YTC that should be most amusing for both of us, as long as you like a bit of scifi intrigue. As for Mami, I have only one thing to say... OMG! Alice, my favorite, I loved her from the first line onward, don't mind if the World's Strangest insists on glomping her at every possible opportunity.
