Little less than half a day since leaving the safe confines of his village and the first among his tribe to venture outside since the days humans first vanished from the realm. An entire world new and foreign to the lone wolf who knew very little of the peoples and current issues or problems as whatever information he gained from the library were outdated and thus would serve him little help. The unknown; terrifying to most, but to Menzai it was a plethora of opportunities and mysteries for him to beheld and observe.
Though such things would have to be on hold for his current objective was to seek out any humans in need of protection. Yet, even after being told of the rumors of humans returning, he still held doubt that humans truly have returned and until he personally encountered some the doubts will persist. And so, he traversed through the forest at a casually slow and alert pace, the long sleeves extending just pass his clawed hands and baggy pant-sleeves billowed gently whenever a breeze blew through; its fabric white as snow and loose fitting promising ease of movement. Matching white furred ears flicked atop his head, nearly hidden beneath his night-blue hair which seemed to almost glisten beneath whatever sunlight succeeded in seeping through the thickly packed trees. Besides the faint flap of his haori he scarcely made any other sounds as his feet; shoeless and harden from years of going about barefoot stepped in a manner rivaling that of elves. As while Menzai lacked training in combat his hunting skills were top notch; capable to hunt without being seen unless choosing to do so or an equally skilled hunter were after him.
His trek was quiet and peaceful as he encountered nothing of note save for some wild animal that he greeted silently before carrying on. River Port was his destination as for now his plans were to actually discern if the rumors were true and if he discovers them false then would simply return home.
And since he took a path that seldom received foot-traffic making chances of encountering any travelers unlikely. Then he picked up a faint scent, two in fact that were a fair distance from him, possibly half a mile or a little more and normally the wolf would pay it little mind. Yet, the scents were unknown that did not seem the match anything within these woods or of the other races he had sampled from the rare traveling visitors. A prospect too intriguing for his curious mind and so decided to inspect the source of these enigmatic scents. Shifting to bend his legs low until he was nearly crouching against the ground and then with a kick of his powerful legs leapt up high into the air where he landed gracefully onto the branches more than halfway up the tree's length. An adequate height for the demi-canine as he began leaping and running along the branches, his steps quiet and precise without missing a beat as if he naturally knew the quickest and safest pathways along the branches.
Within minutes he had been upon the two having stopped a good twenty feet wanting to keep a respectable distance to go unnoticed, but close enough to observe the two individuals that piqued his interest. Now within visible distance, he could see the two to be male and the scents now more perceptible allowing him to better discern the pair to be wholly foreign to these woods and maybe even this realm as the manner of their clothes seemed to match descriptions some humans were described to wear from the books.
Crouching down to remain unseen much as possible; from that moment on he silently observed and stalked the duo. If they truly were human then he needed to learn if they were not dangerous or in need of his aid. Such questions that he got answers to less than an hour after following as they seemed harmless though clearly were not accustomed with traversing the woods. They were certainly a peculiar pair and from the snippets of their conversations he caught seemed to suggest they were close; friends or brothers perhaps? It was possible to catch more, but he did not wish to intrude on their privacy too much and so chose to only listen in from time to time while most of his senses were focused on the surrounding area.
The unpleasant and rank stench of goblins soon stung his nose causing him to momentarily cringe in distaste as he turned his attention back to the humans. What he witnessed next left him staring incredulously at the two now left dangling upside down having been caught in traps anyone who actually bothered to look could catch. The nearly blank expression adorning his face briefly took on a look of exasperation making him wonder how the two lasted this long as he heard the dangling inept humans screaming for help.
Menzai prepared himself to help as he could both smell and hear the goblins encroaching upon their caught prey when the hairs on the back of his neck bristled. Eyes going wide as his body crouched low into a defensive stance, the smell of a demon suddenly appearing in the air.
Why a demon would be out here he had no idea nor what the being planned to do, but he kept himself ready for if the need to intervene arises. To his surprise, the demon proved an ally at least for the time being as he observed the ensuing battle after the humans were freed who showed they were capable of fighting at least. His attention, thus was kept on the demon; uncertain if he could deal with such a creature and hoped it would not turn its attention on the pair once the goblins were dispatched as he remained crouched, his right hand raised with those sharp clawed fingers prepped and ears perked in alertness.
The goblins were dispatched before long and now only the demon remained with no way to know what he may do next. Only to be surprised yet again when seeing the dark being suddenly leave on its own with nary a word to the two he just helped. A very peculiar and strange incident and bit of exchange but no harm befell the brothers so there was no point in pursuing his inquiries any further.
He waited for a few minutes after the two had ventured on before dropping down from the branches to inspect the goblins freshly looted. It wasn't items or belongings he was after; no, he was inspecting their numbers as he found this group merely a hunting party which meant only one thing. The lone wolf stood there, still as a statue and eyes closed as his breathing slowed until it was barely a whisper. All about him, the beating pulse of the forest hummed with life; many footsteps of various animals moved about then the faint flapping of feathered wings rung out behind him to the left as tiny footfalls made his ears give the gentlest flick. Exhaling slowly from his nostrils then without warning the predator spun and lunged at the ruffling bushes at such speeds he almost looked like a snowy blur.
A loud pain filled screech and gurgling wretch followed by the small thump of the single goblin collapsing while clutching its ripped throat, its dark putrid green blood pooling and staining the ground beneath where it weakly thrashed before going still.
Menzai stepped back into the clearly giving a quick wave of his right arm flicking the sickening blood from his stained fingers. The features of his face contorted with a minor look of disgusted at the foul smell of the goblins but now the scout had been dispatched before it return to camp and bring a larger party. A disgruntled sigh left his lips as he knew the smell would persist on his claws for days as he set off to the nearest river or stream to wash his hands off with some sweetly scented flowers to cover the smell best he could.
Once taken care of, the silent wolf moved on to catch up and follow after the brothers, eventually reaching River Port a few minutes after their arrival. He hesitated just outside the border, however, as this was the first time he or any of his people would be entering a town as his village was all that he knew. He took a minute to gather himself for he knew this was only one of many stops and as such needed to ready himself to visit plenty more settlements with some being far bigger and imposing than this simple port city.
When ready, the wolf entered the city using his knows to follow the brothers scent passing crowds of people as he went. Walking with his hands hidden within the folded sleeves of his haori; paying no mind to those who stopped to look at him who found his appearance odd.
It was during this time that the unexpected hologram began popping up all over. What ensued was a most horrendous and gruesome video that had people giving strong negative reactions. He, himself found it horrible and cruel; witnessing such a thing only further instilled in him a need to find and protect the humans now that he knew such monstrous and dangerous beings like this Pride were hunting for them.
This meant that simply watching the two brothers from a distance no longer proved enough and thought it time to meet them in person. And so he continued on eventually arriving at a seafood type restaurant though before he could make his way inside an incident occurred involving a miniature tornado a short distance away. For a moment he waited to see if any dangers would follow suit, but thankfully nothing of the sort happened then with a slight shrug of his shoulders quietly made his way inside.
Quickly noticing most of the people still peering through the window talking about what had just happened outside though the humans did not seem too interested or bothered by the events seeing as how they were carrying on at the table.
Deeply inhaling then a slow exhale as he approached the one still sitting, unable to recall exactly which one it was where he gave a courteous bow of the head." Greetings and good tidings. Forgive this sudden interruption in seeking sustenance but after witnessing that abominable video prevents me from refraining introductions. I am Menzai and know that I am an ally come forth to offer my aid and protection to any human in need. If accepted I shall give my all to ensure the safety of you and your brethren." He stated his offer in a calm and gentle voice, his tone cool and nearly devoid of emotion yet gave no inkling of deceit or trickery.
