Fritz "Ryn" Hendrix
Time: 09:30
Location: Entrance Hall
Interaction: Prince Wulfric @Silverpaw

A preliminary survey of the castle confirmed what Ryn feared: Sorian Castle no longer resembled the palace it once was. Entire structures vanished. Rooms that were not destroyed or merged with another room were sealed behind a wall. Some secret passages transformed into servants’ corridors, while some hallways traded places and became hidden. Everything that made Sorian Castle unique was stripped away. Replaced. The palace had become Danrose Castle in almost every aspect.

Though the map helped them gauge which areas to focus on, when taking account of all the possibilities, they had as much information as they had without the map. The crew was going to have to search every square inch of the place. A time-consuming task that would be difficult to accomplish without raising the alarm bells. They needed time, and summer was too short.

By the time the first rays of the sun pushed the night’s stars away to herald the start of a new day, the crew had come to a consensus concerning their search.

First, to expedite the entire process, they needed the cooperation of a castle resident or staff member. Preferably someone who lived in the castle long enough to know the layout by heart and could be swayed to their cause. Considering the high turnover rate alone, Ryn thought it unlikely that anyone would fit the criteria easily. Karleen surprised everyone by saying that she had already found a candidate. Since she was the only one to have seen the maid, Ryn assigned Karleen to recruit her.

Another alternative was to take advantage of the summer gathering. They could suggest an activity that required the guests to explore the castle. They could also narrow it down to a few guests. Lure them to search the castle by enticing them with something they wanted. Whether that be a tangible object or knowledge.

Second, they needed to prepare for the long haul. If they failed to find what they were looking for within the summer, they needed a good excuse to return regularly. The best way to accomplish that was to build an amicable relationship with a member of the royal family or someone who was close to them.

Based on what occurred in the entrance hall, Princess Anastasia and Prince Callum were—unfortunately—not suitable for this. Any friends of theirs were likely to be seen as trouble waiting to happen in the king and queen’s eyes and sent away. This inevitably narrowed prospects down to four, five individuals: King Edin, Queen Alibeth, First Prince Wulfric, Second Prince Auguste, and—as a last resort—Luz, as Lady Lesdeman. Ryn wanted to avoid involving Luz as much as possible, but if it ever came down to it, he’d have no choice but to use her.

Ryn’s top two choices were the woman who evidently did most of the king’s duties and the Heir Apparent.

Ryn studied Prince Wulfric, during his own speech and after. He dissected the prince’s body movements and countenance, attempting to discern what the prince wanted the count to see and what slipped through the cracks.

Hidden under the sugared adulation, Ryn laced the words “true ruler” with steel thorns. He wondered if the prince felt it as he fed it to him. As far as Ryn could tell, he did not. If anything, Prince Wulfric seemed unimpressed by the thick layer of sugar. Ryn made a mental note of that and recalibrated. One more thing the king doesn’t share with his son. Next time, he would curb the flattery.

A flicker of genuine interest appeared only after the count dangled the information Prince Wulfric tried to pry from his siblings. The one name they did everything within their power to protect, even at their own expense. All their efforts were about to be for naught because one man knew the answer and planned to take advantage of it.

“... You clearly have me at a disadvantage, for I do not know whom you are referring to.”

“Marek Delronzo, owner of Black Rose, a merchant company,” Ryn answered plainly. He waited for a moment before continuing, raising his free hand up, “though I should emphasize that the source of this information is hearsay. As I have mentioned, I happened to hear about the party at the public library and only by chance. I didn’t make any line of inquiry to ascertain its validity. I trust Your Highness will keep this in mind should you ever decide this is worth looking into.”

Third, they needed people’s focus away from the palace for as long as possible. The more distractions, the better. Tossing Mr. Delronzo’s name out in the open added to the pile.

He smiled weakly, “I wish I could’ve provided something more concrete. I can only hope this will aid, rather than hinder, your investigation.” Ryn sketched half a bow. “Thank you, Your Highness, for lending an ear.”

Normally, any conversation would have ended at this point. The count stated that he did not intend to detain the prince for long, and he gave the prince the information he requested. This should have been the most appropriate point to part ways.

“Do you like flowers, Your Highness?” the count asked. Ryn brought the bundle of flowers in front of him for both of them to appreciate. “I think they’re lovely to look at, especially during stressful times.” He separated the two bouquets and offered the one that was an assortment of flowers and flowering herbs to the prince. The chaotic collection of plants was an affront to flower arrangement and floriography alike. That was not, however, the intent of the bouquet.

“These make excellent floral baths.” His voice took a more jovial tone, “Visually appealing, aromatic, and has destressing effects? It’s quite a bargain.” Ryn adjusted the bouquet to the side to examine Prince Wulfric, then tried on a grin before properly presenting the gift as court etiquette dictated. “Be sure to rest from time to time, Prince Wulfric. A tired man is an inefficient man.”

“Now if you will excuse me, Your Highness. I would like to deliver these to Her Majesty. After all that has transpired, I believe it’s only fair that she is allowed a moment to enjoy flowers.”

Credit where credit’s due. The heir of Stravy surprised the maid by staying relatively calm throughout her tirade. He never interrupted her (though it could be because he was doing his darndest to ignore her), he didn’t physically harm her even as she called him a dunce (maybe he just didn’t want to touch her and catch something), nor did he summon the guards to detain her and follow the same fate as Darryn (or he didn’t want to come off as a weak whiny noble who couldn’t deal with a commoner). So when Lord Smithwood gave Riona a piece of his mind, she extended the same level of courtesy to him.

That didn’t stop her from rolling her eyes when he touched her shoulder to assert his dominance, though.

He failed to connect the dots between his own actions at the ball and his ruined shoes, but what the future duke said was not entirely incorrect. Yes, she shouldn’t be wasting her time on Lord Smithwood. Yes, it was the Caesonian court, not the Varian court, that was so messed up that anyone without a title could be killed over any petty reason and it’d be acceptable. Yes, if Caesonia’s common folk wanted a better life, they’d have to band together and fight for it. Riona didn’t doubt that they could do it if they set their minds to it. They just needed to get organized.

Lord Smithwood clearly understood that servants wanted to be treated with dignity and respect, which only confused Riona. He knew, but he still didn't treat them that way. Did he want Stravy to follow in Sorian’s footsteps? Shouldn’t the fact that Stravy hasn’t sunk as low as Sorian be exactly why he should take her warning—even his own words—to heart now before it was too late?

When he smiled that stupid, smug smile, Riona saw she changed from an annoying pest that buzzed around Lord Smithwood’s face to a source of entertainment. Given the choice of words, she suspected he pegged her as some kind of freedom fighter. Added to the fact that he had no apparent love for Caesonia, perhaps he thought she would be amusing to watch and useful if she brought havoc to House Danrose.

The maid said nothing, but her eyes narrowed with contempt. Riona stood on one foot and scraped off what was left at the bottom of her boot with her hand.

Riona gasped, pointing at the hand that touched her shoulder moments ago. “Milord! Your hand,” she exclaimed as she snatched it, “t's filthy!” Riona wiped off the invisible mess with her sullied hand. “You must be careful when touching a peasant as you did! You know not where they've been!” She made sure she “cleaned” both sides of his hand and in between his fingers for extra measure.

“If you can’t see the parallels between your opinion of lowborns and what’s happening here in this city… then Stravy is screwed.” Riona mirrored his smile if only to show him how unflattering it was.

“Oh!” She gasped again with the exact same expression as she had before. She stretched her hand toward Lord Smithwood's face. “I see I’ve missed a spot.”

That was when Riona heard a familiar voice call out to them.

Time: 9:30am
Location: Danrose Palace Outside
Interactions: @Helo Leo & @JJ Doe Riona
Aesthetic: Sadie’s Dress & Hair

The doors to a carriage shut loudly; striding forward with guards lingering behind her stood Princess Sadie. She grinned as she glanced around the familiar castle. It was as beautiful as ever! Sadie began thinking of the Danrose children, specifically, Annie, who she said was her sister from another life. She was beyond excited to see her friend again. Her suitcases were in her hand because she refused to let the servants carry her belongings. It was her stuff so why should they? She hated to make them do needless work. ”Princess SAADDIIEE has arrived!” She called to the few watching Caesonian servants and guards who simply raised their eyebrows at her with confusion and curiosity.

Sadie’s gaze, filled with wonder and excitement while surveying the outside of the castle, soon exploded with joy once she saw Riona and Leo standing together. Like an excited puppy, she turned to face them and strutted over to them quickly. ”Oh dear Leo! It’s been AGES since I’ve seen you!” Truthfully, it had been perhaps a week, but to her, it had been too long. She hugged him and then noticed the scent on his shoes. Curiously, Sadie bent down, took out a cloth from her pocket, and began to scrub at it. ”Were you helping in the stables? Aren’t horses the best!” Sadie stood up and grinned at him.

Then, turning to face Riona, she smiled pleasantly at her. ”And Miss Riona! It’s good to see you too. How are you?” She attempted to take her hands and squeeze them gently. There, Sadie also noticed the peculiar smell and leaned closer to her to sniff her hair and then let go of her hands. ”You also smell like horses and manure. Do you need to take a shower? You could use the one in my room!" She put her hands on her hips. ”A pretty lady like you deserves it!”

Sadie then looked down at her dirty hands and frowned. Huh. That hadn’t been there before! She shrugged and looked at the two of them. Seeing as they were all equally dirty now, wrapped her arms around them and pulled them both into a hug, so they were all in close quarters. ”I am so glad to spend the summer with you two. We should all hang out later!” Sadie giggled and let go of them both, and nodded to her guards to bring her belongings to her room. Her mind reeled with the events listed for the day. One of her guards had detailed them to her during the journey.

”I heard there are pancakes in the park! How exciting! And the Alidasht kingdom is here too? And they have the taste of Alidasht? So cool! Who wants to go with me? Oh, and isn’t there an archery competition? Amazing!” Sadie bounced on the balls of her feet while waiting for their replies.

“You’re in over your head, Charlotte.”

Huh?

The young woman had been chewing a significant-sized bite of pancake when she first heard the voice. Charlotte had absolutely no idea what was happening. She took another forkful and brought it into her mouth with greater haste. There was a hopeless wish that she had been imagining that as she chewed with nervous vigor. A rush of dread filled her as her mind registered just how close this person was. Charlotte scoped the area rapidly, checking that she was still in the public eye. As the man spoke, she could discern that it was certainly a male, perhaps an older one. Though that did not help at all, as she had encountered many older gentlemen over the years. She adjusted her position to move her knees more inward as the voice continued on. He's right behind this tree, and he knows I was walking around last night...A stalker!?

Charlotte shuddered. That was just the last thing she needed right now!

There was an urge present to run around the tree and look at who it was, but she felt rooted to her spot in fear. One hundred percent a stalker. He saw me with Count Fritz last night. She took another bite but went for some whipcream this time. Though most of the reason for her not moving was because she was afraid, there was a small part of her that was just enjoying her pancakes too much to get up. However, after that little bit, the man stopped talking. A perplexed look overtook her expression, and she met the eyes of Champion. The kitten stared at her blankly.

Slowly, she rose up and picked up the picnic basket. She raised it over her shoulder, garnering a few stares as she began to tiptoe around the tree. A reflex moved through her muscle, and she almost slammed it down to smack whoever it was...but of course, no one was there now.

Charlotte relaxed her shoulders, giving the surroundings another glance before moving back to her blanket. She plopped down with a sigh and rubbed her temples.

I'm sick of being threatened by cowardly men.

"...You know what." Charlotte grabbed her notebook from the picnic basket with a bit of passion and flipped it open to a blank page. She started to write down as much as she could remember. "I should not waste time being upset." She whispered softly to Champion. "He was a stupid stalker. He gave me free hints. I would bet good money that man has something to do with Calbert." Charlotte bit her lip with focus as she narrowed her eyes on the page before her. After a thoughtful pause, she continued writing.

After staring at the page for a moment, Charlotte groaned. She closed the book then let her body fall to the blanket. She laid down on her stomach and leaned her palms in her hands. With a distressed sigh, she then pouted.

Her vision adjusted to the sight of the kitten kneading the blanket before her eyes. The sound of his sudden purring did enable a smile to pull at the ends of her lips, yet her mood remained rather ruined for the moment.

Why had that happened? The timing was incredibly strange. For one, she had not uncovered anything yet. Even then, the odds were incredibly stacked against her.

Charlotte did not pose a threat at all.

I have known there is corruption in Caesonia, but I fear it may be more dreadful than I could have imagined.

Immediately, Priscilla slowed in pace to prevent a hard collision of momentum between the two ladies. The force would send both Crystal's bodyguards and Priscilla's outfit into a frenzy. Crystal's lower center of gravity has her essentially tackle Priscilla and her higher center of gravity. It's unwillingly that Priscilla slings her arms over the girl's shoulders to keep the BOTH of them from falling over.

The girl is shaken violently now that she's in her grasp. "SSH! SSH SSH SHHH!" Her lips spread into a tense, very unhappy smile that solidified her face to restrain her shock. She had hoped this hat would be enough to hide this unfortunate development. "YOU TELL ME IT'S NOTICEABLE? Dear Lady Crystal! The reason that your deepest hopes and wishes were delayed until today is because of this hair! It does not make my head appear too round and boyish, does it?"

Oh, and her brother is here too. She had always been convinced she leeched all the presence from their mother's womb and left non for him during conception. Perhaps there were complete imbalances in what they had inherited-- resulting in the two children being unable to compromise between one painfully feeling their own emotions and judgments from others to an extreme, and one cut off from being able to thrive in this lifestyle at all. Maybe their genetic dilemma and childhood neglect were due to the stress of Sorian without any antidote given by being chosen by the Gods and being royal, being above the struggle of power. Priscilla thinks that she gets on fine, even if she could not find any way to thrive. She hopes that her brother could find such a place in this cursed society as well.

Because then he could stop hanging around her and her friends---"Shut up Kieran, it's pants not panty-hose." She stepped back to find her own footing once more and pull her hand to Kieran's shoulder."Does he not look amazing? As a Lady not related to him and owing him no compliment," she says this but she has never once complimented Kieran without meaning it," What do you think? This season could be the one we witness my brother capture a partner once and for all?" She then walks forward silently, to keep up the pace of the morning. There were six people in line for pancakes or waffles...one of the two, and Priscilla's palate was not fit for leftovers and old chocolate. It had been a couple of days since she had a meal that had a full, satisfying taste. This being a particularly eventful social season, she would not go on without flavorful but small breakfasts to keep her energy throughout the day!

"Lady Crystal, have you met any of our guests from Alidasht? More importantly, did you hear of any foolhardy speeches my parents might have bombarded them with last night? I know a few names but I have been given a social disadvantage as per usual, how could I go and make a formal introduction? Woe is me! It weighs on my heart and my giant paperweight of a brother weighs on my arm away from the breakfast I have STILL gone without."

....Perhaps she should get a large cat. In due time, realistically, there could be assassination attempts on her life and she should be prepared. Or a large wolf, she was always more fond of canines and their straightforward, unconditional affection. Her eyes flutter over the wave of her fun for a few seconds more with a cautionary curtsy in the woman's direction in case she looked back, then it does not deserve her gaze any more than the ground in front of her. If Priscilla tripped here she might as well trip off a cliff and pass.

Time: 9:30 am
Location: Anastasia’s Room to his own room
Mentions: Anastasia @princess, Auguste @Inertia

Callum had shaken his head at much of what Ana said but didn’t argue with her. He only hugged his sister back, it wasn’t the words that mattered, but the support behind them, and, for once, he wasn't looking for an argument. Here, for a moment, there was just the feeling of familial connection, strong enough that it had even pulled Auguste towards them, offering similar sentiments.

And there it was, what kept him only toeing at the line but never quite crossing it. Despite how much he hated Edin, and despite every day seeing less and less of anything worth knowing left in his mother, there was so much light in his siblings. Times when everything lacking in his parents was so evident in them and all the love and acceptance their parents kept rationed was freely given when they needed it from each other.

Today even Wulfric had felt a little more like a brother than a distant golden protégé of his father’s.

“Thanks, for that, it’s nice to hear. I’m here for you, whatever you need. But right now I’d better ready myself for the onslaught of eligible noblewomen.” He offered another empty smile, leaving shortly after Auguste had, doors closing behind him. It was nice, feeling like part of his family, but it was a fleeting comfort and it did little to stave off what bothered him.

Callum retreated to his room, it was less comforting than the castle’s library, but here he was at least alone. He knew he should probably bathe away the scent of last night’s party from his skin, make himself look his most presentable for the absolute sham of The Prince’s Court. He grabbed a bottle from where it sat on his desk only moments after entering. Callum’s choice of drink was cheap, strong, and burned its way down his throat, offering a quick, reliable, source of comfort.

Someone had gone through his things, but not ransacked, only a few items sat slightly askew from how they normally were, and, for now, he paid it little attention. If it had been someone to worry about it would’ve been much more of a mess, because Callum, kept a great deal of things he shouldn’t in his room. Most of which were hidden in a way that could be described as the bare minimum. Furniture with secret compartments and coded books were no great obstacles for the kind of people his family had on hand if they ever sought to investigate him past the surface. Part of him wanted to know exactly how far they’d go with him if they knew how little he regarded their laws.

He washed his face only to wake himself up further, wetted down the bits of hair that stayed out of place from his restless night, and used whiskey to wash the taste of stale breath away. He caught glances of his reflection in the mirror, dark circles framed tired eyes, and did he always look so pale? He removed last night's clothes, dressed in a proper suit for the day, and let the scent of the warehouse linger on him. Half-way presentable and maybe just haggard enough to keep his line at Prince’s Court short, surely any guests would prefer his far more presentable brothers.

He spent some time in front of the mirror, drinking from the bottle, and working on excuses for why his appearance was subpar should either parent question him. “I am dressed and on time. I think I look dashing, can’t look any better without a solid’s night sleep-” no that wouldn’t do. If he brought up his lack of sleep that would only remind his parents of last night. He should avoid that. “I’m pretty sure my face always looks like this. Hair too. Bad genetics.” And probably shouldn’t say that either.

He studied his fake smile, hating how fake it made him look. A liar’s smile. But he was a liar, he was just a poor one. “I’d hate to steal the spotlight from my older, better, and woefully unattached, brothers.” That might be good enough to use on Edin at least. It would probably be better to just smile politely and hide behind Auguste, maybe his parents were upset enough with him that they wouldn’t look at him much anyhow. “And, hey, maybe pigs will take flight, and hell will welcome a sudden cold snap.”

He gave up on talking to himself and flipped through the notebook on his desk, found a list of what was used from his stash, and tore it out. He memorized what needed stocking up, and rewrote the things more difficult to procure back down, everything he kept for his records was in his own handwriting. He struck a match, burned the original piece of paper, holding it between his fingers until the tips of his fingers stung from the heat, and tossed the last remnants into the fireplace where it finished to burn until only ash was left. Cal was careful to cover up the traces of anyone who broke laws against magic alongside him. There was no room for error here.

He knew if he had he shown this much care towards other aspects of his life, Darryn would’ve never gotten caught in the crosshairs of one of his minor rebellions against Edin. A single thought beyond ‘yes, a party, let’s go’, would’ve led him to see that having Darryn involved in any way was a mistake. But he hadn’t put any thought into it, he’d heard party, no titles, and thought only of drinking and not being alone. He had Edin’s same propensity towards selfishness, he only displayed it differently. He tried to think about something else.

The list he’d burnt had been basically a magical equivalent of medical supplies, nothing dangerous, not in his eyes. And yet, it was. Because the right words, the right intent, and few easily obtained materials, meant even those without the means for a physician could find relief from a variety of ailments and wounds. That was the very least magic could do, but at its strongest, it made the old proverb of knowledge being power, more true than most could imagine.

There was a clear reason why magic was so severely outlawed; it could put power into the hands of those the nobility were desperate to keep under their heel. He could see that, he just couldn’t see a way to use that without getting someone hurt. More often than not, the people who got hurt in Caesonia were the ones who didn’t deserve it. The world was unjust and unfair and there was no solution he could see, and he didn’t know how to live in the world the way it was, and the thought of trying to fight against it while not seeing a way to win, was terrifying.

So he plopped into an uncomfortable chair, knowing that collapsing onto his bed would probably mean instant sleep, and only stared into the bottle of whiskey wondering where so much of it had gone. He planned to just sit here, let time pass, feel warm and empty until the clock neared eleven and he would have to deal with the world, and all it was, again.

Anastasia couldn’t help but smile as Auguste joined, even if his expression had been grim initially. It was no surprise that he ended up pulling her and Callum into a hug. Hearing his voice choke up, she had given the both of them a tight squeeze. “I love you two.” She told them softly. It was a brief comfort to know that Auguste cared for their lives, yet as quickly as they had come, they had gone. She had lingered a moment to stare after them.

She had longed to spend more time with them. Maybe she could have asked Callum to play cards with her or asked Auguste if she could vent her feelings to him. But that would have been selfish. They weren’t her parents after all. They had their own demons, and she understood. It wasn’t like she could do anything for them either right now.

When the bedroom door had closed, she found herself alone. Then that feeling of impending doom set in as it always did. Without Darryn to worry about, other thoughts could infiltrate her brain.

She hated being alone. It was painful. The silence of an empty room could be deafening.

Anastasia usually would seek out someone to talk to, even if they were a stranger.

Sometimes it was easier to do anything she wanted in a fleeting moment, even if it was dangerous. A rush of adrenaline could feel more intoxicating than any alcohol. But decisions like that were always costly. They were often at the expense of others or even herself. Anastasia knew living in such extremes wasn’t healthy; it only led to a cycle of guilt. But what alternative was there?

She tried to force herself to be happy and she was often successful in deluding herself and others around her for short periods of time.

As long as she acted happy, maybe she'd feel happy, and maybe everyone else would feel happy too.

There was no point in living life miserable, right?

So why did she?

As Anastasia had been sitting in contemplation, there was a knock on the door.

Time: Morning, 9:30am
Location: Outside Danrose Palace
Interactions: Riona @JJ Doe, Princess Sadie @Potter

The servant Leo had seen as simply having a dangerous streak had become outright diabolical. Muck from her shoe now covered her hand as she made a show of grabbing at his hand, and then attempting to wipe said muck onto his face. He grabbed her hand before she made contact, gripping her wrist and keeping her from any further contact.

All his thoughts, and all he saw, was red.

He was here losing a verbal battle against a stable hand who was now only tossing mud and filth about as if it was clever. And the problem was that it was working, that he was losing any patience with this, and all he wanted to do was break that hand. Instead, he let her hand go as quickly as the thought of violence had entered his mind, and then took a step back to put more distance between himself and her.

Much like dogs, servants acted out because they lacked proper training, much like dogs, beating them only exasperated this, it was not a solution, and Leo would not be the sort of man who beat a dog because it was not trained right. This was not his problem and he would not let it be his problem any longer.

“Enjoy this. Let it bring you comfort when you return to whatever hovel you crawled out of, and I continue to enjoy every comfort -” Leo stopped talking as Princess Sadie announced her arrival in Sorian.

Oh fuck his absolutely rotten luck. Of course, despite his efforts to be a presentable lord, he was now in the presence of Varian royalty with mucked-up shoes and a filthy hand arguing with the unimportant.

“Your royal highness,” Leo extended a full and proper bow at the addition of the Varian royal. He was quick to sidestep her attempt to clean his shoes. “I must insist, you are too kind, but I can attend to my own shoes.” He smiled through his utter confusion at the princess's every action. Helping in the stables? Him? Like a servant? For a source of amusement? He tried to imagine a more dreadful waste of time and failed to think of one.

Riona, he learned the servant’s name from Princess Sadie, had at least provided him an out of this situation. All he had to do was simply excuse himself to attend to his appearance and he could be rid of this conversation. Before he could do so, Princess Sadie pulled both of them into a bizarre and uncomfortable group hug. I think I’d actually rather hug a wild boar. As soon as the princess’s grip loosened he moved further from her reach as well and hoped to never repeat the experience again.

Princess Sadie had inherited all the softness her father possessed, qualities far more flattering on a princess than a king. Right now, those qualities had morphed into something detestable, forcing him to share any embrace with such a loathsome commoner, ignoring all proper boundaries that kept nobles separated from the lessers, and then she continued to ramble on as if there was nothing wrong with what she had just done. When she finally paused long enough to take a breath, Leo spoke up.

“I’d say I am looking forward to seeing the horse race, Princess. A beautiful thing, the symbiotic relationship between master and animal, to see the horse run as it was built to do, and its master lead it towards success in their shared discipline.” He spoke mainly keeping his focus on the princess before flashing a grin in Riona’s direction. “Perhaps we’ll continue this conversation on horses, though I wouldn’t want to keep you from your duties, I’m sure there are better uses for your time.” He hoped that she’d make herself someone else’s problem for the remainder of the summer.

“No need to further bore you with my thoughts, I should clean up a bit and head out. Enjoy your morning Your Highness.” Leo bowed again towards Princess Sadie but paused to wait for her to excuse him. Possibly another mistake on his part, as she was prone to rambling on, and all he wanted was to wash his hands clean of the entire situation, but it only seemed the proper thing to do here.

Time: 9:30 AM
Location: Just outside the Damien Estate
Interaction: N/A

The bazaar on the outskirts of the Damien estate would normally have been a sight for sore eyes to a travel weary Cassius, especially as this was his first time here in Sorian proper...but on this day nothing seemed of ordinary stock. No brothel caught his eye, nor did a scent capture his attention. He was a man, on this day at least, strictly with business in mind. It would be the first steps toward a new life; a better life. He could not think of any mortal nor god that could stand in the way of him winning this day.

This was to be the day that the lowly and battle tested Cassius Vael was to become a Lord. Not by deed or by gift, but rather by luck. With his mother’s death came the reveal that he had always come from a noble line…that of Count Calbert Damien to be exact. His father’s identity had always been hidden from him for reasons that he honestly still did not understand, but now that he was aware of just who he actually was...ambition was already beginning to bubble beneath the surface of his greater desires. For too long he scraped by in the muck and blood of the mercenary profession. It was time to take his piece of this world and become more than he was ever destined to be. Fuck destiny he thought to himself.

All he had to do was meet this Count for himself, convince him of the truth that he was his bastard son, and take his place in nobility. He knew it sounded far-fetched and was probably more difficult than he was letting it seem in his own mind, but hell he had faced overwhelming odds many times before and yet here he was alive and well. This certainly could not be any harder than when he and the rest of the Iron Wolves were cut off from reinforcements out in the middle of the sea fighting a two front battle against pirates and the kind of raging storm you only read about in novels...could it?

The bazaar, the people, and everything else around him were nothing more than a blur moving in slow motion as he stared ahead at the gates of the Damien Estate. Within those walls were people that shared his blood. Family. The only real family he had ever known was his mother. Sure, he had his comrades in the Iron Wolves as a family of sorts, but in that line of work it was hard to become too close to anyone. There was a much higher guarantee that you would never see them again and so most kept each other at a comfortable distance to say the least. Definitely helped the sex remain casual, so that kind of dynamic did have its benefits but a traditional family experience was not among them. This, however was a matter of blood. A father, potential siblings, and an actual home that wasn’t tacked on to the side of a barn. This was something that Cassius never imagined that he would have...Especially starting in the later years of his 20s.

Finally, Cassius found himself at the path out of the bazaar and towards the estate gates that his eyes had been locked on this whole time. It was now or never. A sly smile formed on his face as the absence of doubt and nervousness shocked even him. He felt collected and ready to take these steps. He did not imagine ever feeling at home in a place like this, but that wouldn’t stop him from claiming something that was his birthright. He belonged here...for better or for worse.

Approaching the gate attendant he took in the view in front of him. The ornate design of the gate itself probably cost more than Cassius had ever spent on anything, and the house beyond was truly something to behold. The beautiful trees that lined the property were immaculately groomed and the intricate stone walkway was nicely designed and laid out. His father was no king, but the Count clearly had his fair share of coin. I bet daddy Calbert is the worst kind of rich fool. Let us ruin this exquisite day for him…shall we? He thought to himself with a smirk.

The attendant addressed him as he made his final approach...Honestly he didn’t hear a word of what the man said. It didn’t matter. All that mattered is the these gates would open...one way or another.

“I’m going to need you to run and grab the master of the house, ol’ Count Calbert Damien...Tell the man his bastard has arrived.”

Tsukigami

Location: His house -> Shooting range
Time: 8:00am → 9:30am

Tsuki’s eyes adjusted to the light coming from the window. He lay there staring upward at the ceiling a few moments longer, his thoughts still clouded by the events of last night. Why did I falter? I had him right there. He was still upset and angry over the entire situation but begrudgingly dragged himself from his bed and into the shower. Once Tsuki finished preparing himself for the day, he made himself a sandwich and ate it while reading the newspaper that was left at his door this morning. After going through some of the pages, he saw quite a few events being held, some of which piqued his interest, like the archery and sword contests.

I really need something to clear my head…maybe it is best I go out and try these things. He thought to himself all the while, his heart hurt with the thought of seeing Wystan’s face.

All he wanted right now was to erase him.

Tsuki got up after finishing his sandwich and left the house. After locking his door, he headed towards the location of the shooting range, which was a bit away from his small house. It took him some time to arrive there, but he eventually arrived. Once there, he signed up for the tournament and then prepared the bow he was given, making sure it was not tampered with and in working condition as he awaited the arrival of more competitors. He decided to take the time to use the practice targets as sitting idly was not an option right now.

Attire:’nice clothing’

Verrick sighed as he exited the queen and kings chambers. He was surprised but at the same time he wasn’t. It was not the talk he expected, he felt he understood what it really meant though.

Beatrice was to have a full guard now. This was to ‘free him up’ to watch over Princess Sadie, as well as continue with his normal duties as a woodsman. He sighed much longer this time. Rubbing his forehead and turning down the hall, his mottled cloak fluttered behind him. revealing his 'nice' clothing which was to help him blend in a little more. With out the cloak he would look like a very casual lord about to go on a hunt with his long bow in hand and quiver equipped to his leather belt/suspenders. It was a strange sight to see as his footfalls were completely silent on the polished tile floor.

It wasn’t that he didn’t like the youngest princess. He enjoyed teaching her how to throw and fight with knives as well as shooting a bow. She was a natural and picked up on…it quickly. She had just so much energy. It was like trying to herd a cat. He respected how she pushed herself to continue to be like that after what happened on her honeymoon.

He glanced up as he heard some people talking ahead of him, at a far distance he could see Prince Wulfric speaking to Count Hendrix. His eyes narrowed. What are they talking about. He thought to himself. Gliding to the right into the darker part of the entrance hall behind some reoccurring supporting pillars. He glanced around before flipping his cowl up and melting into the shadows with ease. It felt good to do some actual Woodsman work for a tiny bit.

As he inched closer he started hearing more and more of their conversation.

...I didn't realize this was the same party that Prince Callum and Princess Anastasia attended until the morning gathering.” “At the time, I assumed the crown sanctioned the party. Surely a respectable man such as he would’ve sought the royal family’s approval beforehand. How terribly gullible of me.” He finally looked up, his eyebrows knitted together. “Please accept my apology. Had I known, I would’ve reported it immediately.”

An unsanctioned party some of the royals possibly attended...interesting. Sounds like someone got in trouble...

“There is no need for you to apologize, count, as you couldn’t possibly have known.”

“But truly, your resourcefulness does you credit. You clearly have me at a disadvantage, for I do not know whom you are referring to.”

“Marek Delronzo, owner of Black Rose, a merchant company,” “though I should emphasize that the source of this information is hearsay. As I have mentioned, I happened to hear about the party at the public library and only by chance. I didn’t make any line of inquiry to ascertain its validity. I trust Your Highness will keep this in mind should you ever decide this is worth looking into.”

If Marek is willing to host some....'after parties.' something interesting must of happen. I wonder if any other nobles were apart of this party... He glanced back down the hall when he heard a door open. Time to move on. He backtracked towards the direction he came from, when he checked to see if anyone was looking, he wiped his hood back and walked confidently out of the shadows and right. Walking straight towards the two. Quiet still, but now his footfalls could be barely heard.

As he walked near them he bowed his head "Your Highness..." He said in a low respectful tone to excuse himself as he passed.

He made his way to the front of the castle to await for the princess. Arriving a minute or so before the carriage rolled up. He managed to catch the tail end of the argument between Smithwood jr and a servant girl who had quite a sharp tongue and did not take his shit he tried to deal out.

He folded his arms and leaned against the wall and watched as she started “helping” the lord but only making him more filthy. He chuckled with an ever so small hint of a smile. The brat surely deserved it.

He made his way over silently as smithwood was trying to wiggle his way out of conversation.

“I’m surprised you believe a little mud is going to ruin your day.” He said in a low grumbling voice with a hint of amusement. Appearing Just to the side of him looking towards him. “And I thought you were an outdoorsman.”

He then looked to the servant girl and asked, ”Perhaps there is a water trough the Lord can wash up in? I'm sure he would appreciate it.” he asked with a straight face.

He looked towards the princess and bowed slightly. “Welcome to Caesonia Princess, It would seem I am to escort you to wherever you wish to go for your stay here this summer. I heard the pancakes were right next to the shooting range if you wish to attend both at once?”

Perhaps Priscilla’s guards were a bit worried. Only a deep giddy chuckle could be heard from Crystals. Crystal was taken back though at Priscilla’s reaction to mentioning her hair cut. She had forgotten how… intense. Priscilla had gotten over the years. ”I-I mean…” She looked wide eyed at Priscilla, but smiled anyways. ”I-I-it is much different from when I last saw you…B-but you still look lovely, not at all boyish or roundish…”

She was cut off when she saw Kieran stumble in behind his sister. Complaining about her rushing and getting grass stains on his knees because of her. Then saying hello to her. She had a slight blush on her cheeks but before she could say hello back Priscilla continued, giving him a compliment, but then manipulating the conversation to make herself give one on the spot. Her face was a little more red as well as she opened her mouth and looked between the two multiple times.

”O-o-of course!” She said with a nervous smile. Clearing her throat. ”Hello Kieran…Yo-you do look quite…dashing. Enough that grass stains wouldnt matter…” She said for a moment and looked back to Priscilla, realizing she didn’t answer her question ”SurelyenoughtocatchapartnerImean.” She added quickly with a throat clearing at the end as she tucked some of her hair around her left ear.

Pricilla forced the group forward toward the pancakes thankfully, but added a barrage of questions. ”I- um no, actually I did not…” She said softly “I did not see your parents either… I-I was quite occupied.“ She smiled nervously. Thinking back to her crazy night the night before… meeting a dashing guardsman, talking to Prince Callum, as well as prince Felix the music the dance… She faltered a bit remembering the first one, then what happened with Violet.

She shook her head softly and looked over to the woman with the tiger.”I-I guess… we could bring…her a plate and introduce ourselves? I’m sure she has never tried it before…it could help?”

Once they got their own plates, crystal looks up at Kieran and asked softly "C-could you hold mine please?" She had decided to go with the cinnamon waffles with whipcream and extra strawberrys. She Looked down at her books She realized this wasn't going to work and and quickly to Liah with a pleading look. Liah sighed and rolled her eyes, walking up to her she grabbed her books from her arms so she would not damage them. Crystal smiled "Thank you Liah.."

She grabbed another plain pancake with syrup for The woman with the tiger and Once everyone was ready, she lead the group towards her. Jacob moved much closer, but still far enough away to not 'intrude'. Crystal cleared her throat."H-hello. I-I um... Saw you didn't have a plate yet...H-Have you ever tried pancakes before?" She asked quite nervously to the strong looking Alidashi woman. Glancing at her tiger a few times as well.

Clothes for the day (No cape or weapons)

The breeze coming off the rolling waves of the sea was calming. Roman had taken a few steps away from the estate to go over his thoughts and the information that was given. He didn’t have the mother’s point of view but guessing from all the information he has picked up so far about them she isn’t likely to be the one giving the orders. “Come on roman go over the details.” He thought to himself while looking over across the bay.

“Let’s see after getting home last night she was likely confronted about their actions and decided to send her off early this morning. Had to have been last night by the way it sounded she left before that dammed paper was written. Punishment it would seem but perhaps to strict, their family wouldn’t gain much from sending off one of their children during one of the largest gatherings of nobles in decades. Hell, even im here.”

Something was nagging at the back of his mind, socially he may not have been the most understanding of people, but he wasn’t stupid all the time. Something just felt off, this game was about deals and power plays, but he did not see an angle that worked. This is something he should bring up to his information broker when he got here. That man was always just around the corner or in a puff of smoke.

His attention was pulled back to the estate for a moment with what looked to be a flurry of activity and questioning looks. A man stood at the gates talking to the guard. Roman picked up the end of what the man was saying and had to stare for a moment.

“ol’ Count Calbert Damien...Tell the man his bastard has arrived.”

What a strange declaration, it would seem the count could falter and be human. Making a mistake as to sire a child out of wedlock for a man of such standing would be fun to see just how far this pushes the man.

“Good luck with that friend, you’re going to need it.” He called over before walking towards the port.

Judging by the way the guards were looking at him incredulously they were just as surprised as he was so this could be fun. Still not something he wanted to stick around and see, right now he just wanted to walk and think.

Roman found himself walking through the warehouse district when he heard the announcement for the archery contest in the background. This made him stop in his tracks. This was a good opportunity to spread the Ravenwood name, offer a prize none could refuse and watch what happens from the sidelines. The options were moving through his mind, and he visually nodded at his own decision, “Yup that’s a good prize.” Turning on the heels of his feet roman headed to the warehouse he rented to store the materials and safes he brought with them.

His family had acquired one of the warehouses to store their goods and a handful of muscle to keep it safe for the summer. The one where his things where stored had a couple guards out front whom he had already gotten acquainted to when they were unloading their cargo a few days ago. Stepping inside he spent little time going through the building. Rows of boxes and crates containing materials of all different kinds for whatever their family might need while here. There was even a small room built in the corner to provide some temporary housing for their men in the event they couldn’t find anywhere to stay.

He kept passing crates and barrels till he came to a row of safes in differing sizes. Each one with a different code on the front, a code that told him what was in each one. Stopping in front of a tall safe he spent a few moments opening the complicated locking mechanism. Inside where several ornate wooden boxes almost as tall as him with paper tags attached to them. Reaching in and grabbing one he closed and locked the door before heading towards the archery range.

Upon reaching the range he saw that they had already started but they still had quite the line of attendee’s and there were still quite a few people over at the park. Walking past the line with confidence like he owned the place and the physical size to back it up Roman strode past the attendants and approached the Announcer Harry Morgan and introduced himself,

“Good morning sir, I am Lord Roman Ravenwood I have a quick announcement to make regarding the prize for the winner of this competition.”

Harry seemed surprised but handled himself appropriately with a slight bow and signaled for a quick cease fire to the other people running the show. “Go right ahead Lord Ravenwood.”

Roman took his box and cleared his throat, with a loud deep voice he spoke from his chest, “Can I have your attention please! I am Lord Roman Ravenwood of Emberstone and Ravenwood Industries!” Roman was sure to pause between each sentence to allow full understanding.

“We will be sponsoring this competition by offering a one-of-a-kind prize to the one that wins this tournament!” Roman opened the latches and pulled a long bow from the crate for all to see. “A once in a lifetime prize, a masterwork composite longbow fit for a prince, An Ivory Handle made with silver inlays and the symbol of the Ravenwood master craftsmen! Use it as a tool, a wall decoration, sell it for five times your annual pay! If you win its yours!”

The bow was quite expensive and took a long time to make, its white ivory and silver handle tapered down in color until it reached the black tips of the bow. The materials themselves that were used in its construction was likely more than a year’s wage for many of the people here. Roman took a step back from the line and moved to place the bow on the box lined with smooth beaver fur that glistened in the sun. it wasn’t the most expensive or best bow he brought with him but was one of them.

The announcer looked stunned as he admired the bow next to him. After a brief pause the competition began again with renewed vigor from the contestants. Roman new this was financially his loss, but this would help to spread the Ravenwood name in more ways than one. Publicity and good business. Most of the items he brought where to be given at things like this anyway.

Roman made his way back through the crowd of competitors giving them smiles and nods as he passed being as friendly as he could to all the participants young or old. At least he found a good spot near the front that hadn’t been claimed yet and happily accepted a cup of tea and thanked the one that poured it for him.

Embarrassing.

Never one to waste a moment or to let a conversation idle, Priscilla sweeps onwards into a grand introduction of his latest fashion statement. He cannot help but feel his ears get a bit too warm when this includes coercing a compliment from Crystal. He clears his throat rather sharply despite himself and starts to speak, "Oh, you really don't have to-"

Priscilla is talking of partners, something he has done all he can to avoid thinking about or considering. The whole ordeal leaves him wondering if it's too late to turn and go in the other direction without making much of a fuss.

However, as if fate seeks to spite him personally, Crystal is a good enough sport that she does compliment him and he wants to evaporate like rain drops on a brick pathway. Almost involuntarily, his hand comes up to his face and scrubs just above his nose. This is to hide the ruddiness that's risen in his skin, embarrassment is not the most charming look on him. "Oh, no, no-- I'm not terribly concerned with any of that."

He tries on another lofty smile, anything to hide the fact that his ears are burning. "Thank you, Crystal," he can't quite qualm the sensation that he needs to leave quickly. His voice is quiet when he adds on. "You look lovely today yourself."

Somehow returning the compliment makes him feel even sillier so he resigns himself to silence, at least momentarily.

He listens to his sister as she continues onwards, ever the more social of the two. He sometimes can't help but envy her ability to tear forward in any given conversation, he's never been quite so versed. Her natural ability to talk was a saving grace though, in some ways. He could go without saying much of anything as long as she managed to keep the other parties entertained.

As attention turned to Mayet, he was more inclined to focus on the tiger that accompanied her. He had always had a soft spot for animals, even ones that were... inherently dangerous. While he was not excited about meeting anyone while dressed like this, at least he would get to see the big cat. That was a plus unto itself.

Crystal holds her plate to him and he's quick to take it, almost fluidly, like he expected to carry something. "I'll consider saying no next time." He teases but there's no bite to it. He doesn't ever seem terribly bothered by idle tasks, anything to keep himself useful.

"I like the tiger." He comments, balancing the plate in his hand as they approach Mayet. "Really beautiful."

He inclines his head in greeting to Mayet, keeping a step behind Crystal and Priscilla. He hasn't quite managed to shake the embarrassment but he is quite good at keeping a mask of calm about him. A polite smile that's perhaps a touch too crooked and a friendly furrow to his brow.

Ruby looked at the scar-faced man in complete shock. Judging by his outfit and demeanor, he seemed to her like the kind of brute that would be eager to get his hands on some waffles. Yet, Ruby was also starving and ready to feast upon the delicacies ahead of her. She had slowly stepped in front of the man, almost having felt ashamed of herself for thinking he was a greedy loser.

“Do not think that you are some hero for this! It is only proper manners to let a lady get waffles first.” Ruby gave a smug look toward the man and then turned forward to look to find no line ahead of her. Her excitement rose, and she started doing what appeared to be a solo square dance. She inched toward the waffle table while doing this odd dance and then momentarily peered behind her to Lorenzo. She gave a wink and then started piling every waffle flavor onto her plate.

The ginger man with the cane who was running the waffle table’s eyes widened in surprise. No one had shown this kind of devotion to waffles yet. He held a hand over his heart, utterly moved. A tear was shed. He smacked the table with his cane to alert his trumpet man, who started playing a song dedicated to her.

Ruby had already begun shoveling the waffles into her face when she heard the music. She looked up inquisitively and smiled with waffle bits in her teeth. Ruby cheered the trumpet man on with an abrupt scream, which seemed to alarm those around her. She looked back toward Lorenzo and shouted. “THESE ARE GOOD! PILE THEM UP!”

Ruby had no care in the world. But as she bit into her chocolate chip waffle, she thought of her beloved Kazumin and how happy they could be, eating waffles together and frolicking through the flowers. If only he were here right now. she thought, We could be feeding one another a glob of waffle. She could not help but get immersed in her daydream as she envisioned Kazumin before her. Not noticing she was actually doing this, she started moving a glob of waffle on her fork toward Lorenzo’s face, a goofy smile on her face. There she was, causing a line hold up, waffle on her face, and dressed in pajamas.

The trio had gotten early to the competition that morning to register. Mary had been talking about the event even before they left Varian, trying to convince the knight to partake in it. When Mathias initially refused, she tried to convince him with the opportunity to meet young ladies. Ladies that he could court and hopefully one day marry. When that didn't work, she went to Lukas, promising that he would see his father shoot arrows and win a prize for him, something big and flashy.

It worked in the end after Lukas threw a bit of a tantrum but what was important was that Mathias had agreed.

"If Duke Vikena and Count Calbert are really sleeping together, who do you think pitches and who receives?" Mary peered out of the paper to look at Mathias, trying the various bows laid out on the table.

"I am not sure," Mathias replied, pulling on the bowstring of one of the weapons to check its resistance. "Count Calbert is too proud of a man to be the receiver." He picked one of them up, pulling the string again before examining the weight of it by balancing it on his palm. He was too concentrated on the bows laid out before him to really pay any mind to the conversation at hand.

"Really?" Mary sounded unconvinced, "I think the Duke is the pitcher."

"What's a p..pi.. pitcher?"

Mathias blinked, looking back to see Lukas sitting next to Mary and a toy bow at hand. "It's, uh, when..." he looked at Mary for something, anything! Lukas was too young for this conversation, and this was no place for it either! The sudden need for a response had stunned the battle-worn knight into silence.

"It's when you..." Mary looked back at Mathias, completely unsure what to say as well. They had been caught off guard, too deep in their thoughts to remember that a child was sitting right next to them and their inappropriate conversation. Mathias dropped the bow and walked to Lukas, smiling at the boy.

"It's just when a—"

Thank you Roman Ravenwood for the distraction.

"Look, Lukas, your prize if I win!" Mathias scooped up the boy and pointed toward the tall man and the beautiful bow he was holding. Its intricate design and colorful had certainly caught the knight's attention. A fine weapon that would serve a good purpose if it were at his disposal, Lukas seemed to think so too. The boy "oohhed" as wiggled in his father's arms with excitement.

"No, I think you're right." Mary said, making Mathias turn to look at her again. "Count Calbert is definitely the pitcher." She had gone back to the paper, clearly uninterested on the newly announced prize.

"Papa, what's a p..pi.. pitcher?"

"Shi... Sorry."

"It's someone who throws a ball." Mathias finally answered, giving Mary a look.

Farim & Saiya

Mentions: Saiya @Tae, Layla @Potter, Munir @FunnyGuy, Mayet @13org

Farim had left the entrance hall along with the others, but had taken note of Mayet’s words. He knew his cousin was rather hot-blooded but she wasn’t stupid. Her viewpoint held some truths and he knew that there was likely some weird conspiracy of sorts going on. However, as he was, he lacked the means, the power, or the motivation to look further into it, so long as his family was truly safe at the end of the day. He would still keep a sharp eye out for potential threats and dangers. He nodded towards Mayet and quietly excused himself back to the guest house for some preliminary discussions he felt needed to be had.

Farim made his way in a carriage, a silent ride with his father that was likely due to Hafiz’s own internal scheming and ruminations. With what seemed like a rather dull and uninteresting ride back, Farim stepped from the carriage and went into the main lobby of the guest house. The familiar doorway gave him a slight flashback to the way it was last night, only Saiya still in the fireplace wearing a beautiful gown that Farim couldn’t help but point out was much more revealing than she’d typically enjoy. He smirked at the memory, and looked around to see her, yet again, in the main lobby. She seemed to be in a slight hurry, walking briskly along and almost straight into him as he reached his hands out to grasp her arms.

”Woah, Saiya! Always in such a rush. Is everything okay?” He chuckled while speaking to her in a slightly teasing manner. He scanned her facial expression for a moment, not sensing anything weird outright but wanting to make sure she hadn’t been given a hard time while he was in the entrance hall. ”If you aren’t too busy, may we talk in private? I have some questions if I may.” He relinquished his slight grip on her, patting her sleeves for a moment and stepping back to give her some space.

Saiya had been so focused on heading out from the guest house, from the letter she held in her hands that she wished to send to Prince Auguste, that she hadn’t entirely noticed Farim until he grasped her. She blinked up at him for a moment, but then a soft smile crossed over her face. ”Everything is perfectly fine, my dearest Farim.” She said with a small nod, knowing here wasn’t the place to say anything more than that. She’d expected him wishing to speak eventually, she just wasn’t sure when it would happen. She glanced at the letter once before back up to him. ”Of course, I’m never too busy for you. Where would you wish to go to speak?”

He felt a slight smirk run across his face, and although he wouldn’t admit it, a faint rush of color to his cheeks. ”Dearest, huh? You flatter me so. But come, we have a good amount to discuss.” He gestured for her to follow him, leading her to the door of his quarters. His falcon, Thara, would squawk and caw at his arrival, followed by his shushing gesture as he locked the main door and moved to let the bird out of its cage. He let her rest on his wrist, her talons only just barely scratching along his skin as he rubbed the back of his finger against her feathers. ”It is okay, Thara. No need for hysterics…..Now, Saiya….what have you told who about last night?” He calmed the falcon down and turned his attention to her, giving her his full attention while still casually petting his pet bird.

The color in Farim's cheeks would have gone unnoticed by most, but to Saiya's perceptive eye she caught it. There was a brief moment of confusion as she was unsure why her words would have caused such a thing. She then realized that calling him 'dearest' could be interpreted in many different ways. A slight blush of her own crossed her cheeks before she followed him to his private chambers.

She gave Thara a calm smile, doing her best to help calm the bird, as she patiently waited for Farim to calm her. Once he had turned his attention to her, she opened her mouth to speak. "I have told the Sultan the most and I have told him only the truth. The others had received an invitation, I was told about it and opted to wait for you, then I brought you there. After that everything gets fuzzy. I know I didn't have a drink, yet somehow I still don't remember much. It is odd. I also told Hafiz that I don't remember anything." She explained to him with a small shrug, but it was obvious that she was concerned about not remembering things.

Farim nodded at her explanation, still using the back of his hand to brush Thara’s feathers as he listened to her experience. ”I am unsure if I partook in drinks, but knowing me I likely did. So it’s interesting that we ended up with the same result…” Farim pondered a moment before setting Thara onto his bed. ”Then if I am asked, I shall share the truth, since it seems no one will have your head for it. I have no idea what he plans to do, but be careful and if you sense danger, please let me know.” He gets up from his bed, likely followed by a slight coo from his bird as he walks over to Saiya to embrace her for a moment. His hand patted her shoulder before he stood back and spoke again, slightly more upbeat. ”I do not wish to take up too much of your time. You seemed busy after all, but I will still leave you a seat at the Gossamer for a while should you decide to join me for brunch there.” He moved to open the door, waiting to see if she had much more to say before throwing the door open.

”Oh I’m sure he has nothing good planned, but as always I shall always let you know if I hear anything or sense anything.” She said as she embraced him back before turning towards the door. She tapped the letter on her hand for a moment as she grinned at Farim. ”Perhaps I will join you in a bit, for now, though, I must see a prince about a date.” She said with a small giggle as she waved the letter around before heading out the door and heading towards the castle to find someone to deliver said letter to Prince Auguste.

Farim nodded, a smirk on his face as he opened the door and spoke softly. ”Then don’t keep the lover boy waiting. I will see you soon enough…Go! Have fun!” He would watch her leave his quarters and question himself for a moment. Why are you reading so much into it, Farim? Surely you aren’t jealous. You are above such notions. Yet why does it feel weird when she mentions….forget it. I will drive myself crazy thinking about it.

He turned to see a nearby servant coming from another direction. He ushered them in and politely asked them to simply check on Thara every once in a while until he returned, placing a small token of his gratitude in their palm in the form of two gold coins. ”I don’t want to alarm folks with Thara but I do not wish to keep her locked up all day. Could you watch over her today until I am back? Just for a few hours while I grab some food.” . He respected the people that diligently waited on their every need and want, and only wished to provide some level of courtesy to a rather thankless job.

The servant meekly nodded before peaking into the room to see Thara peacefully sitting on the bed, not a worry in sight. He quickly took the coins into his pocket and bowed to Farim, causing a slight bit of embarrassment to wash over the man as he assured him that the pleasantries weren’t necessary. Farim gave a slight bow of his own before asking the man if he had seen Munir or Layla. The servant nodded and mentioned neither had left their room this morning, save for a brief outburst for Layla. Farim figured Munir would be out cold knowing his cousins 'party hard' lifestyle. But, Farim nodded and took note as he thought to himself. Perhaps Layla could use some…friendly company for a change today. He thought as he made his way out the door and towards an available carriage. He beckoned a nearby driver over and asked to be taken to the Gossamer, ready to finally have his first meal of the day.

"Sir, he only said to tell you that your bastard has arrived."

"What... in the living fuck is that supposed to mean?"

"Count Damien, I think he means that he is your son from another woman... and now he's here."

Meredith

Calbert ran a hand through his hair. There was a pause and a sound of indignation that followed. "I know what a bastard is!" The count paced about his foyer. Was his son truly just standing outside his home? Conveniently the day after his precious Violet had passed? He clenched his jaw with uncertainty. This was all too much. He had to wonder if his new enemies were creating some kind of rouse with some information they scrounged up.

It was indeed true that he had a son.

But it had been twenty-seven years since he had last seen his mother. The memory of it all, however, was still clear as if it had happened yesterday.

He had been engaged to a beautiful dark-haired woman named Meredith. With streaks of silver in her hair and the loveliest of eyes, she had always stood out in a crowd. However, before the two of them could even wed, the problems had begun. As a nobleman, he had strategically selected an attractive and seemingly suitable woman to be his wife. In his own attempt to keep her satisfied, he had showered her with compliments and gifts. Calbert assumed a woman looking to marry a higher-status man was searching for such luxuries, and they could both benefit from the relationship. Although he did grow fond of her over time, Meredith knew it had never been love. In the most ironic way possible, she had been Calbert's match as she had seen through his act. Not only that, she had watched the way he'd play with people's heads. And she hated it.

Then came the day when the straw broke the camel's back. Meredith had left and never came back after that day. She had simply left a letter. In that letter, she had told him simply that she was pregnant and refused to have a man like him as a father to her child. He had never quite learned where she had gone, but she had the decency to send him a few letters. Unfortunately, she had stopped a few years in and cut contact completely off.

Calbert clenched his fists and moved into his bedroom. He opened up a small, decorative box with a key and took out a few old pieces of paper. He flipped through them.

I named him Cassius...
...He has your eyes...

He reminds me of you... But I hope he will be nothing like you.
...You'll never meet him so don't bother...

His eyes darted across the pages, picking out sentences here and there. He finally set them down on his dresser and departed his bedroom.

Calbert marched out of his house and down toward the gate. His heart was racing along with his pace as a figure behind the gate began to come into view. The streaks in his hair verified everything before he could even stand across from the man, who was clearly grown. For a moment, he felt a wave of anger that had been long buried in him rise again. His mind was rampant with thoughts but none had escaped his lips. Instead, he met his gaze with a look of nonchalance, just as he did everyone.

"Tell me your name."

When Count Hendrix provided him the answer, Wulfric did no more or less than tilt his chin down in acknowledgment, and make a mental note of the name. When the other man emphasized that his knowledge had been gained via rumours, the prince quirked an eyebrow at him. “So you have said.” Or, well, had implied, anyhow. Just as he hadn’t before, Wulfric still did not dismiss the possibility that coming to learn of the host hadn’t been quite as accidental as the count would lead him to believe.

Trust… Had Fritz pointed out the uncertainty of this information to make himself seem more trustworthy? To cover his own back? Due to the (shared) expectation that it was a matter of course to confirm such a thing? Either way, Wulfric merely replied with a placid, “I will.”

The sounds of quiet footsteps signaled someone else’s approach, and the prince briefly looked away. He did not know the man who greeted him as he passed by, but offered a polite nod in return. Yet another unknown, lingering in our castle as he pleases? Maybe it was an inescapable (if disagreeable) consequence of this summer event of theirs. Either way, he refocused his attention on the count.

At his next humble words, Wulfric chanced a stare deep into those unfathomable black eyes. Mysteries upon mysteries… Because there was true satisfaction in having one more piece with which to resolve the puzzling events of the party, it was all too easy to counter with a pleased smile. “Oh, it was concrete enough, and thank you for bringing this to me.”

He was half of a mind to take his leave, but was presented with the bouquet the count had been ‘hiding’ behind his back. He inspected it, bemused. Since this action was far more unexpected than not, he decided then and there it was most wise to treat this on the surface level of gift giving and receiving.

Wulfric lifted his gaze from the (visually unappealing, it had to be noted) collection of handpicked flowers and herbs. “Hmmm, I do not dislike them,” he replied, tone teasingly thoughtful. His preference did not necessarily matter when being gifted something, and the question was likely rhetorical, but why not make a bit of a show of letting himself be lured in?

He watched Fritz separate the bouquet into two, nodding alongside the explanation as if suddenly, entirely new beneficial aspects of these plants were revealed to him. Very multi-purpose. Not only its uses, but also the underlying intentions.

Compartmentalizing more strictly, he considered only how much more enjoyable the aroma might be, when drawn out by heated water. “Quite thoughtful,” he murmured, and accepted the gift as was proper.

The count then discerned his fatigue seemingly at a glance. He also provided some advice, maybe a warning as well. Shouldn’t make it too easy for you, should I? Wulfric smiled wryly. But what he said was, “I am aware.” His tone was largely neutral, bordering on cool, with a slight underlying resignation to it. Rest was in ever consistent demand, but the prospects of its future supply were perhaps a tad bleak.

Exchange done, they were both equally ready to leave. “Have a pleasant day, Count Hendrix,” the prince bid his farewell, and departed.
***

Back in his office, Wulfric took a seat on one of the couches, sinking into it. Some tension left his body, and he felt a wave of exhaustion pass over him. However, his mind was far too restless to consider even a short nap. Granted, he wouldn’t have regardless.

Clearly, what he needed just then was to order more coffee with his breakfast. His stomach concurred with the idea of food, now, but he pushed that aside as much as he had the tiredness. Had it really been twelve, thirteen hours already since he’d last eaten? No matter; he could hold off on his meal for a few more minutes.

Instead, he chose to attend to the most immediate concern. He closed his eyes, and – having carried them with him thus far – brought the flowers to his nose, inhaling.

“Floral baths.”

A low chuckle passed his lips. Know something of me, do you?

“Just for that…” he said under his breath, silently completing the sentence with, I am nearly tempted to excise you.

But the course of his thoughts belied that whimsical idea. He recollected all he could about their conversation, creating a mental portfolio of sorts as he did so.

Hendrix’s skills, tendencies, sphere of influence…speculations on his motives. For all of that, he hadn’t a clue about the man’s aims. Beyond the immediately obvious one of forming an association to him, and possibly to his mother, that was.

His plan of action was essentially to subtly probe into the count. However…With all his other matters to attend to, he was frankly limited in the resources he could spare a single individual. Thus, he did the mental equivalent of shelving his notes on Fritz. They’d be there, in the back of his mind, whenever he needed them. Ready to be acted upon when he had the opportunity to do so.

Wulfric opened his eyes and blanky stared at the bouquet. He tied the stalks into one simple knot, then somewhat carelessly, threw the bundle onto the nearby table. Oh, he’d use it, alright, but for now, it was time for breakfast.

“Have you ever committed to a deed out of the goodness of your heart with the most benevolent of intention, only to have it grab the nearest musket and blow your face clean off? If it hasn’t, then you are far too lucky… If it has, then just imagine it occurring every waking day of your life…“

Lorenzo watched with the utmost confusion as the woman he assumed was just a hungry vagrant performed the oddest dance had ever seen. He looked over his shoulder at the other attendees behind him, searching for some cue he had missed. He had been away from public events for nearly a year so he might have understood not being in the loop of new norms and practices. Unfortunately, every face he caught sight of wore the same expression of bewilderment. When he returned his sights forward, he caught the woman giving him what he thought was a very misplaced wink. Blinking rapidly, Lorenzo could feel he was beyond his depth with this woman who made him feel oddly embarrassed. He didn’t know what to do. How was he meant to challenge this? With conformity or ire?

Luckily, for the time being, her focus was gathering as many waffles onto her plate as possible. However, Lorenzo could hardly keep his own focus off of her. He curiously watched for what odd thing she might do next, and he wouldn’t be left disappointed. Confused, yes, but not disappointed. Could she perhaps be… ‘on the stuff’? Lorenzo strained his eyes a bit as if he would magically identify some indication of drug addiction besides the woman’s clearly visible behavior and unfitting attire.

Then the third or maybe it was the fourth strangest thing that occurred. The odd young woman had placed so many waffles on her plate that a trumpeter began playing a celebratory tune. Now look, Lorenzo was a lover of waffles himself but even he wouldn’t dare to take one of each kind like she had and-

“What on heaven’s earth…” Lorenzo quietly uttered as he watched the woman gorge on the waffles before even making her way from the serving table! He wanted to hurry and grab a waffle or two but he was afraid the woman might do something too wild for him to be prepared for. So instead, he took his time with short and slow steps toward the serving table. He winced and gripped his plate tightly when she suddenly shrieked at the trumpet player in excitement. He was getting so close to the waffles, but was it truly worth it? He could still smell the pancakes. Maybe he could turn back, yes? No, it was too late! It was when her eyes met his form again that he mentally prepared to smash his plate into the woman’s face out of fear for his… life? Fear for something! I don’t know what she intends to do to me, but I must not let her do it! Where’s Lottie?! He whipped his head around looking for Charlotte, but there were far too many people blocking his view and he’d consider himself a damned fool if he stepped out of the waffle line while he was so close to the serving table now!

“THESE ARE GOOD! PILE THEM UP!”

With conformity or ire?

“Uh… Yeah! I must try them! YES!” And so Lorenzo made his choice. He nodded at the woman happily in an effort to put himself in her good graces. Whatever that meant. He inched closer to the table but, unfortunately, moved closer to her as well. In the process of reaching for an unclaimed blueberry waffle, Lorenzo found his face mere inches from none other than a glob of chocolate chip waffle offered by the strange woman with a smile that made Lorenzo so frightened inside that he had to continue to submit to her crazed antics. A duke must do what he must… I pray this waffle is not my last. He winced, before taking a bite from the fork. Initially, he chewed awkwardly, but the taste of the scrumptious chocolate chip waffle nearly removed the desperate duke from the moment. “You’re right young lady. These are indeed delicious! I dare say the best waffles I’ve had outside of Veirmont!” No longer fearfully conforming to the silliiness, Lorenzo found himself genuinely pleased with what he had the opportunity of indulging in.

“Hey can you imbeciles get a move on! You fools are not the only ones in line!” A patron shouted causing Lorenzo to face him apologetically. “Yeah, you! And your bitch there! Hurry it up so I can eat some waffles, damn it!”

Again Lorenzo was given a choice. The short man before with slicked-back blond hair was far too normal to seem as frightening as the vagrant. He wasn’t one for confrontation, but he very much disliked undeserved insults.

With conformity or ire?

Lorenzo furrowed his brow intensely but remained where he was.

“Do you have any idea who you speak to?! And you call me the fool?! I am the venerable Duke of Veirmont!” The trumpeter abruptly ceased playing his tune the moment the duke raised his voice. Lorenzo was all in now. He raised his arms up like a victorious gladiator, his empty plate still in his right hand. “You must be illiterate, sir! You must be! Because did today’s paper not warn you of the Duke of Veirmont?! The warmonger! The fucker of counts! Hmm?!” Lorenzo’s face held an intensity that was almost never seen, his facial scars only adding to the intimidating aura he managed to pull out of his ass. “You will wait right there… patiently! Or you may find your name graced along mine in the Caesonia News tomorrow.” Lorenzo briefly narrowed his eyes leaving his threat to the man’s own imagination who was more disgusted than afraid of what Lorenzo even inferring. “Hmph.” And with that Lorenzo turned back to the serving table.

Thea had awoken early in the morning with the first rays of light just peaking over the horizon. She was positive she’d only gotten a few hours of sleep and her blaring headache and the still slightly tipsy feeling helped to confirm this. She needed some water, her mouth felt so dry. She glanced around the room only to see that Felix was still asleep. It was at this moment that she remembered where she was and she let out a small gasp as memories from the night before came flooding back. She’d shared more than she’d intended and she felt the panic starting to set in. She had to get out of there and fast.

She quickly stood up and almost immediately regretted it as the room spun some and her stomach felt a bit queasy. Shit, she needed to get back to her room and take some of that ginger tincture the apothecary made for her before she lost the contents of her stomach. She took a moment to get her bearings before she made her way towards the door. She quietly exited the room, closing the door with a light click. “Lady Thea? Have you-” A squeak escaped the blonde girl as she spun to see a servant who had to quickly catch her before she fell. “My Lady, perhaps you should see the doctor.” The woman began saying as she worked to steady Thea, but Thea only pressed her finger to the girl's lips before shushing her.

”I’m quite alright, I promise you this and if the good doctor inquires of me please let him know I shall come visit him later so he doesn’t need to worry.” Thea explained to the woman in little more than a whisper before leaving her and heading towards her room, not listening to anything else the woman had to say. Once she was there she found herself passing out once more after taking her tincture to calm her stomach.

She’d awoken once more around 8am only to realize she was to enter the Archery Competition today and almost panicked as she fell out of bed. She quickly got up and ran to her closet to get dressed, finding the perfect orange dress. She paired it with a fairly new fashion piece, fishnet stockings. She then added some thigh high boots before grabbing a pair of leather gloves, her bow, and then went rushing out of her room.

The ride to the archery range was a quiet one as Thea tried to focus and get past her slight headache. She ended up turning to her tried and true method of getting rid of it, drinking more alcohol. Only enough to keep her mind and body calm and just function through the day. She wanted to win this god damned competition. By the time she arrived it was just barely after 9am, fashionably late. She quickly made her way to the desk to sign up, getting all sorts of looks from men and women alike as they took in what she was wearing. She simply ignored them as she grinned at the person taking names. “Lady Thea Smithwood, Skilled category.” She said and watched the man eye her up and down. She then watched as he started to put her down under the beginner category. That sweet smile quickly disappeared from her face as she slammed her hand on the table and leaned in closer to him.

”Listen here, you little shit, you better move my gods damned name over to that skilled list or I’ll be using you as my fucking target and then you’ll be hoping I’m not a beginner.” She wasn’t in the mood for any condescending pricks today who decided to judge her based on how she looked. She watched shock and fear cross over the man’s face before he did as she said. That sweet smile once again appeared as she thanked him and turned to find a spot to practice. She scanned the crowd, wondering if Verrick would be there and realizing she needed to speak with him. She also realized she needed to find some time to spend with Annie and make sure she was okay. She also hadn’t spoken with her brother in a long while and needed to do that as well. Her head began hurting some as she thought of all this and realized she needed to clear her mind and get lost in her archery. It was her favorite weapon to use when she would go hunting with Leo and she’d become quite skilled at it. So she found herself a spot and began practicing after Roman had made his announcement of what the prize would be.
