An introduction to Barry & Mitch
_________________________________________________________________________________________

Barry’s body jostled in his seat as the world passed him by, a duotone blanket of pale blue and hazy tan in the morning sunlight. The thrum of the Humvees’ engine's roar was deafening, only surpassed by the beats and bass of Clint Eastwood played in the background. Barry looked down at his wrist watch, 0752 hours, nearly time now… His gaze wandered ahead of him, Rodriguez in the driver seat, Lt. Michelle relaying commands and battle strategy over comms, to his right, his best Antony, telling him…something. It was already so loud in the transport, his words were coming out muffled; knowing him it was definitely dirty. The scene felt so familiar, yet so far away, why was it so hazy? His gaze lowered to the watch again, 0758; but why was this so familiar?

He went to look at Antony, to ask him why they were there, but as he looked his friend wasn’t there anymore, the view replaced with a cracked window masking the blue sky. Barry didn’t have to look far though, Antony was on top of him, unmoving. Was Barry…on his side now? When did that happen? Arm is pinned, smoke is spreading, it's kind of hard to breathe now. “Hey, Antony, can you get off me for a sec?”

BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM

Gunfire? Explosions? 50 caliber and RPGs. Why were there weapons in Sanctuary? Wait, was he in Sanctuary? This didn’t feel like home, a long way from it. He tried asking Antony another question, to no avail.

BOOM BOOM BOOM

Barry was feeling more than a little stuck now and his vision was starting to get hazy. “Look, Antony, if you aren’t gonna move, can you at least tell me why I’m here?” He turned his gaze to his friend again, his body still unmoving, but the head had lifted itself enough to stare into him, “Barry, this is the day you died. Don’t you remember, Barry?” It paused briefly, then said it again, Dont remember Barry? Barry? BAaaarRRYy? BARRY!!!!

THUD THUD THUD “Barry! HEY BARRY!!!!”

The adrenaline kicked in all at once and the older male shot upright, his head nearly slamming into the roof of his truck. His breathing ragged and heavy, Barry quickly scanned his environment for any immediate threats. He saw the brick walls on either side of the alley he had parked in, and he could hear the din of people as they walked in the street ahead, perpendicular to his. It took a moment for him to realize everything was okay and that he could breathe easy, there was no fire, there was no death around him. He breathed in deeply, his body calming, the adrenaline wearing away as the pain in his hands from white knuckling the steering wheel set in. It was only after all this, maybe twenty to thirty seconds of processing, that he finally acknowledged the increasingly worried person staring into his truck’s window.

“Barry! Thank God, are you good in there?!” They pleaded out to the man, worry and desperation screaming from their auburn eyes, as Mitch assessed Barry’s condition.

Some moments ago, Mitch was enjoying a stroll through the festival grounds towards the auction site, a cool lemonade in hand. They wore a tank top and jeans for the majority of the day, opting for their father’s old football varsity jacket to ward off the bite of the cool summer eve, GO DIMAONDBACKS!!!
Mitch had given their farm hands the day off to attend the summer festival, leaving them with only a few chores to handle themselves. They could have set up a booth at the festival, but corn could only get you so far when funnel cakes were being sold just three stalls over. Fried foods could have their day today, Mitch would be making a killing with their vegetables at the farmer’s market any other weekend. They had heard about how Javier was setting up the petting zoo and offered to volunteer their help, or at the very least check on the goats beforehand. He had said not to worry about it and that he’d already delegated that task to his children, which knowing if Stella was there, she’d have it under control. Overall it was a day that Mitch could fully enjoy, eat what they want, play what they want, and just do whatever they want. As for what they wanted, well that was hopefully to get a date at the auction and to maybe get the warm, fuzzy feelings that acts of altruism could bring.
It was only happenstance that Mitch walked by the alley where Barry had parked his old Ford F-150. They had visited him earlier in the morning upon his request as Maisy didn’t seem to be feeling up to snuff and knew that he’d be working around the festival grounds doing odd jobs here and there. Mitch had assured him that they’d be stopping by in a couple of days to check on Maisy’s condition, but they wondered if he’d been home at all and could give them more info. As Mitch approached the truck, panic began to set in as they witnessed a profusely sweating and distressed Barry, with no windows open. They were on the truck in seconds, pounding on the window and yelling his name through the glass, half a mind to break the window with whatever was readily available in that alleyway. Thankfully it never came to that, Barry woke up, bewildered and confused, but alive.

The man fumbled for the door handle as he tried to wipe the sweat from his face and pull the strands of hair that had plastered themselves to his forehead. When he did manage to get a grip and pull that lever to open his cage, never did the air feel so cold and so sweet on his damp face and body as it did in that moment. Before he could even thank Mitch, their lemonade was being shoved into his hands. More than readily did he bring the golden elixir to his lips as he chugged the sweet, tart and refreshing drink down his gullet. A ragged breath escaped his lips upon the last drop and his back fell into the cool metal of his truck, a further blessing in his eyes.

After several moments of awkward silence, Mitch broke it first, “You mind telling me why you thought baking yourself alive in your truck was a good idea?” A bit of a dark joke, sure, but anything to ease the turbulent anxiety in their mind, “Seriously, what happened?”

Barry had to think on that for a moment, he was helping with the festival that much was certain. A lot of people had asked for his help setting up, maintaining, cleaning and restocking their booths. Like a really good roadie, he managed to weave about the crowds of people without causing too much of a ruckus, only stopping for the briefest of moments to delegate himself the next task. The last few nights he’d been pretty restless, that same dream happening again and again. On top of that he was losing clients to the new construction company in town so he’d been taking on extra work to make ends meet. Less sleep added on top of the extra work meant that he caught whatever zzz’s he could in his truck. Normally this worked beautifully for him, but it looks like his recent patterns and choices were finally starting to catch up. He had already planned that he wasn’t going to be home for the rest of the day, and parked his truck intentionally out of the way so it wouldn’t be a bother. If Maisy were with him, she would have alerted someone sooner, but with her feeling well he had asked Mrs. Davis, the elderly lady next door to watch her for the day.
He shouldn’t have survived, not then and not today, and yet by some act of grace or perhaps simple circumstance, Mitch arrived in time to wake him up. ‘I need to schedule another session with Dr. Fitkau…’ The old veteran rubbed his temples as he explained what had happened to Mitch, not the dream, not the lingering regret that he wished he wasn’t here, just what led to him falling asleep.

“...I figure if you hadn’t shown up when you did, well…I’m sure someone would have found some authentic Canadian jerky in the morning.” He chuckled to that as he wiped the remnant sweat from his body after peeling the drenched shirt from his skin. Fortunately he kept a spare set of clothes in his truck and after making sure he was sufficiently dried, slipped on a plain white t-shirt before donning a thin flannel.

“Not funny Barry,” their words were betrayed by the small chuckle escaping their lips as Mitch spoke. Mitch had turned back towards the street as Barry cleaned himself up and gave him some privacy. Their hands interlocked and rested against the back of their head while their thumbs idly played with the small braid they had tied their hair back into. Despite hearing the whole thing from Barry, there was something egging them in the back of their mind, something that didn’t sit right, like he was hiding something. Whatever his reasoning was, Mitch didn’t figure he’d divulge it so readily with them anyway; best not to bring it up. “You need more rest Mister, you might actually look peaceful and less freaked out when you wake up to someone saving you.”

Barry paused at that and gave them a quizzical look, “Oh yea, I’m sure I’ll keep that in mind as I balance my checkbook for the week…” He did a final check over his things before locking up the truck

“You still use checks? Shit you’re old.” Mitch turned around to face the man as he stood in front of her.

“What’s wrong with using a check?” The older man eyed them with a raised brow.

“There are such things as debit and credit cards, you know? You can even just pop them over the scanner and boom, there goes your money.”

“Yeaaa and it’s talk like that, that scarred me as a child when my friends showed me Terminator 2 for the first time.” He tucked his hands in between his arms and sides, “Listen, thank you again for waking me up, but you should go and enjoy the festival.”

“Ohh no, you’re not gonna just up and get rid of me that easily,” They crossed their arms, a dirty glare in their eyes as they stared him down, “I’m not sure I’m convinced that you’re fine being on your own, so for the meantime, you’re stuck with me.”

Barry laughed at Mitch’s insistence, it’s not like he didn’t mind being around them, but lord help him if he didn’t feel like a kid being told he had to hold hands while crossing the street. Still, that look in their eyes told him that Mitch wasn’t going to just drop this. “Fine, fine. So long as wherever you’re going has something stiff to drink, it’s been a long day.”

“Barry…”, The rather unamused look spoke volumes.

“I’m joking, I’ll drink some water.” That was enough to satisfy Mitch it seemed and they gestured for him to follow, “Where are we going anyway?”

“To the auction of course!” Mitch exclaimed rather excitedly.

Barry’s enthusiasm was the exact opposite to their’s, “Seriously? You want to watch a bunch of loveless weirdos with too much time and money on their hands bid on potential matches? Whatever happened to just, I don’t know, asking someone to go out with them.”

“It’s not just about the potential for love, it’s for charity too you know! There’s something nice about being altruistic that gives me warm and fuzzy feelings.”

“Oh, so you’re planning to participate then? Sure that’s the only warm and fuzzy feeling you’re going for?”

Mitch lightly punched Barry in the arm, “So what if I am? I’m allowed to date and if some people want to line up and let me take them out, then hopefully my friends Ben and his brother Frank can help me make a convincing argument.” Mitch waved the two hundred notes teasingly at Barry.

“Okay, alright, you know what, this will be funny to watch you do, so let’s get to it.” A fire lit up in Barry, much to both Mitch’s elation and chagrin. As the two fast approached the auction area, it was clear from all the activity going on that the event was in full swing already. The pair made their way into the area, a stunning red headed woman was currently being auctioned off.

“Damn, am I too late? You think they’ll let me get in and participate?” Mitch asked as they scanned around for the registration area.

“Can’t imagine why they wouldn’t,” Barry shrugged, “who’s going to say no to someone who wants to spend money?”

Mitch was about to retort before the final bids rang out $1000! $1250! Sold for $1500!?!?! Their jaw dropped as they watched the redhead bombshell make her way off the stage to the winning bidder. Barry simply stood behind the dumbfounded human, a low whistle ringing through his lips as he leaned down beside them, “Hopefully you brought more friends with you other than just Ben and Frank?”

$1,500 for a charity date with the park ranger? In this town?

From the back, Kat could see the two bidders, a guy with another guy, and a woman. The look that woman gave the man might have been a challenge. Fortunately, the man didn't try to top her bid. Still, he looked Russian, as did the older man beside him.

Kat glanced around, half-expecting Liam Neeson to pop up. From the looks she was seeing, others were shocked by the big bids too. Just what sort of things were going on here?

Was this why Uncle Oskar put her here? To watch what went on in this town? And why so much interest in the park ranger?

Clearly, she needed to reach out to Uncle Oskar and ask him to bring some more art supplies with him - whenever he was planning to show up.

Joining them would let her know what was going on quickly, but who knew what sort of danger she faced?

As the sun set over Sanctuary and the stars began to shine in the night sky, the date auction reached its exhilarating climax. Talie had won a date with Tommy, Ana with Manny, Dr. Fitkau with Zack, Kitty with Brad, Moxi with Ana, Bee with Em, Levi with Kitty, and Em with Archer.

The brunette auctioneer stood before the crowd, her smile bright with pride. "Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for making this night a resounding success! Your generosity has been beyond measure, and together, we've raised a significant amount for charity. Let's give it up for these amazing people who put themselves up on stage and for those who bid!"

The crowd erupted in applause as the woman stepped to the side to let the auctioned people have their moment in the spotlight for one last time. Laughing, the women raised her hand to quiet the cheers. "But the night doesn't end here! We have a special treat for all of you. Live music by our very own local band, Vermillion Ablaze, will begin shortly! So, let's keep the spirit of togetherness alive, dance under the stars, and continue spreading the love! Be safe and have a wonderful night, everyone!"

Talie "Friendly local rock nerd"

Location
Auction
Mood
Surprised, Nervous, Happy. What do you wear to a horse riding date?

Talie did not seriously and truly expect to win if she was honest, when she had bid she expected to be soon out bid and quickly beaten to the date. The Horse ride and everything sounded rather lovely and fun. What did you even wear? She did not even own cowboy boots etc?

No. Fate was not going to let her go so easily and her bid had won. Glancing over to Reya and Stella Nervously but with a smile. She had done the bid impulsively, the Sheriff was polite, seemed kind and did not look bad at all. Talie had not really dated in a while and it seemed a chance to start again, Talie had to admit she was a little lonely, working on her own alot, home was lonely and her family bar her brother hated her for leaving the family business.

"Ummm. What do you wear? Horse riding? Or even how?" Talie admitted to Stella and Reya sipping her cocktail. They seemed nice, Stella was a pretty shorter darker haired woman and Reya was well Reya. They had bonded over failed rescues, funnel cake, pretty rocks and such. It was as random as it could possibly be. "I never expected, oh well, I might as well have fun. He is handsome though." Talie admitted with a giggle and would deny mentioning Trace Adkins, country boys and that song if anyone ever asked… That song was too catchy. Yes, that was her excuse and she would be sticking to it. Thankfully the light and her tanned skin meant the blush was minimal and Latina mother gave Talie a warmer skin tone.

"Maybe we can find you a date the old fashioned way. You are attractive and well dressed." Talie spoke cheerfully thanks to the cocktails. They were attractive ladies and nicely dressed. She was sure Reya and Stella could find a date if they so chose to. Spotting Tommy he did look less comfortable to be on the stage, he had never really looked comfortable. If they preferred men or women was not really a problem, as long as they were consensual Talie really did not care.

"want another ladies? What happens next?" Talie asked, glancing over at the bar man who had called her rock boss. It was definitely a new version and had made her laugh. She had come alone and ended up sitting with the two drinking cocktails and bidding. It had been a rather fun evening. Talie was unsure about the whole event, it had all been a roller coaster from the Teddy bear, to the stall to the auction and so on. It had been a rather busy day.

She was rather new to town to let the locals take the lead on how things were meant to work. Time to just go with the flow.

What an expected and unexpected turn of events. Kayleigh stood up proudly on stage to watch the audience chatter about the results. As expected, she won Bradley. Her best friend’s brother. Earlier on, Kitty caught sight of Stella on his shoulders as she and her cousins came in like a wrecking ball and from that point on the cogs started turning. How could she help Bradley get with this girl he clearly had feelings for? It only made sense to win him so she could do a good deed. That good deed was to play matchmaker and put an arrow of love right through their hearts. Bradley works too much so even if it wasn’t a love match, it certainly can be a sexual one. While she didn’t know much about Stella, she knew enough about Bradley to see how he looked at the girl. How he smiled.

Yes, this would go perfectly splendid!

All she had to do was make sure they didn’t suspect a thing.

Turning on her heels to face Bradley, she did a hop in front of him, blocking him from getting up from his chair. She playfully flicked his forehead, “Okay Bradster! I’m going to text you the deetz of when to pick me up. Day. Time. Place. Don’t care if you’re busy, make yourself unbusy. We’re going to have a day of fun, and you’re going to treat me like a QUEEN. Okay?” She grinned wildly at him, giving him a knowing look as she thought of something completely unrelated to this conversation. Unbeknownst to Bradley, she knew he frequented a site, as a viewer. A specific site for lonely people that want to feel something. How did she know this? Well, he was one of her high paying fans. He just didn’t know the person he was watching was his little sister’s best friend. Such a small world! But because of this, she knew what he needed. He needed to get laid. What better way than with a cutie with Star in her name?

Bradley seemed in a complete stone cold daze, having not answered. Tilting her head, waiting patiently, she noticed the red in his eyes and chuckled. He was high as a kite. Well that’s good. At least he wasn’t in too much distress during this event. Something like this was definitely not up Bradley’s alley but he rocked it like a champ! She was proud of him. Nerds be nerdin’. She loved this nerd and she was determined to make him have a good ass date and if the gods were on her side, the date would end with something scandalous. Juicy. Hot. DOWNRIGHT DANGEROUS. She couldn’t wait.

Through her peripheral vision, Kitty could see Levi staring up at the stage, bewildered and confused. He was quick to shift his expression when he noticed she was looking at him. With her squirrel brain, she ended the conversation as quickly as it never started with one date and went to the next, “Sorry Bray-Bray! I gotta’ fly!” And with that, Kitty shifted herself so she wasn’t walking into Bradley or the other contestants. With the speed of a gold medalist for track and field, she ran toward Levi and jumped high in the air, stage diving right to him, “LEVIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!” And since he was already watching her, he braced himself and caught her, even if the impact did push him back a little.

Wrapping her arms around him, hanging in his hold, her feet not touching the floor, Kitty giggled, “So a date, huh? I hope you have something fun planned! It’s been so long since we got together. I’m excited. I love surprises!”

Lugging a basket filled to the brim with books, snacks, motivational stickers, and a large bottle of Fireball whiskey, Lily hoofed her way through the festival crowd. For the occasion, she’d dressed herself in a simple yellow sundress with black polka dots that she’d found at a thrift store not so long ago, complete with secondhand sandals. She carefully glanced around as she strode past the swelling number of people, looking expectantly for one of the newest members of their fair town: Ana Clair. Or was it Ana Rork? The mystery woman’s surname was unfortunately the victim of gossip’s tainted touch. All that Lily really knew about her was she was blonde, saint-like, and near average height, at least those were the traits that were most consistent amongst the school teacher’s rumors.

As was tradition, Lily tried to greet as many newcomers as she could to Sanctuary with a gift basket, and this ‘Ana’ would be no exception! She had maybe spent a little more than she should have on the booze though. $18 for a half gallon of Fireball?! That was basically highway robbery! At least it was for a good cause. Hopefully this new woman loved cinnamon whiskey as much as herself because there was a lot of it, and it would be such a shame to waste it!

The fair librarian peered at the auction’s crowd as it found its way to a conclusion, both hands entwined around her basket’s handle. Maybe it was a little too easy, but her brown eyes immediately fell on the blonde woman leaving the stage. Internally, she supposed it made sense for this newcomer to be up there. A date auction was a great way to meet new friends, after all! The prospect was entirely too terrifying for Lily’s liking though. Too many eyes. Too much pressure. No thank you!

A thin smile spread on Lily’s face, and started toward the lovely blonde. “Excuse me, miss!” she called out, hoping to get the woman’s attention. Her feet stopped before the stranger. “Are you… Ana Rork? The teachers at the academy have just been talking all about this new pretty blonde woman, and I just had to come and welcome you to our town!” Lily’s voice was soft and bright, suddenly holding the gift basket up for Ana to take. “This is for you, by the way!”

Hopefully, she’d love it! There were books of every kind in there (including some spicier reads for the lonely hearts out there).

“LEVIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!”

The uttered name caused Lily’s head to snap to her left. What she saw left her in a panicked daze: a familiar redhead was leaping into the arms of a phantom apparition of Levi Brooks.

“So a date, huh? I hope you have something fun planned! It’s been so long since we got together. I’m excited. I love surprises!”

Her now quivering hands dropped the basket she had been offering, her eyes widened in horror. From the basket, all the sweet treats and thoughtful gifts tumbled onto the ground as she had an awful realization: That was the real Levi. Unable to tear her gaze away from him, she stood there, mouth agape and heart in her stomach. Lily thought she had gotten over this feeling, but she also never expected to see him again. She could feel a trickle of tears run down her cheek, unable to do anything but gawk at the terrible scene before her.

During the auction Reya quietly observed and sipped her mystery cocktail, fully trusting her new found friend Talie to not secretly lace her drink with drugs. She kind of wanted to not remember this day anyhow, so why not gamble a little? The auction had been interesting to say the least - particularly the fact that Levi bid on Kitty. Not only was he back in town, but clearly he still had eyes for the little redhead. From what Reya had remembered, Levi had left Sanctuary on a bad note and it seemed that he had no intention of changing. It was intriguing to her that her new friend was so set on a winning a date with the Sheriff, too. Reya hadn't forgotten about Tommy bringing Talie a gift earlier in the day, either. It was cute that they both seemed interested in one another; maybe they would be a match made in heaven!

"I'd recommend some comfortable pants." Reya answered Talie as she inquired on what one wears during a horse ride. Her brown eyes shifted to the stage to find Tommy as Talie mentioned him being handsome. She watched as he exited the stage with the rest of the group, considering what Talie had said. She supposed Talie was right, objectively. He was a good looking man, Reya just didn't like that every time she had ever been around him it was due to some kind of traumatic incident happening in Reya's life. Stella liked him well enough though, so Reya assumed he must be a good person too. "You definitely could've done worse in this town, not a bad buy." She half smiled, joking with Talie before she finished off what was left of her cocktail. Only time would tell if Talie drugged it and Reya could take a little brain nap to black out the remainder of this day.

"No more drinks for me, thank you. We should head to the band stage." Reya stood up from the table and waited for Talie and Stella to follow. Although Reya felt more like going home, she thought maybe time with her best friend could cheer her up. It usually did. Stella had been fairly well behaved during the auction despite being inebriated, thankfully, but Reya was still curious why her best friend had been missing all day, was drunk when she didn't usually drink, and was without her phone. It was a bit concerning, but at least Stella seemed like she was having a good time. All the more reason to stick around. Plus, seeing Zack on stage doing his thing didn't sound so bad.

Frustration crept over Em like a looming shadow, her brain racing to figure out who had thrown her to wolves. She hadn’t signed up to be in the auction, but someone else had. It wasn’t Zack, judging from the confused look he’d given her when she made her way onto the stage. That left very few suspects, and she couldn’t help but think that the person that ”won” her date was behind it. She wasn’t sure why she even got on the stage in the first place! Maybe it was the drink in her system, or maybe she had just been curious. Either way, the inebriated woman hadn’t expected much to come of it, much less a former classmate cinching the bid.

Drunkenly, Em stormed away from center stage and made a beeline toward… well, Bee. In their school years, Em remembered her as being a grade above her and having a predilection for piercings. That, and the fact that they dropped out of high school around the same time. Em had pegged her as being cooler than most of the other kids, but she couldn’t be sure this whole auction thing wasn’t her doing. It wouldn’t surprise her, anyway. For some reason, all the kids in school had hated her, so who’s to say Bee didn’t either.

“Hey, what’sh the big idea? Why wouldsh you do tha’? Did you put my name in the auchshun?” Em slurred as she interrogated the equally short woman in front of her, her voice with a slight uncontrolled cutesy high pitch to it. Authoritatively, she jabbed an index finger into the center of Bee’s chest and drew dangerously close to her face. “Did you do this becaush you hate me? Yoush hash to tell me!” If her voice didn’t give away her intoxication, the red flush over her skin certainly did.

Em swayed to and fro as she stood there, her expression a goofy mix of irritation and expectation. Her azure eyes couldn’t help but take in Bee’s figure, an odd thought of appreciating the other woman’s look. If that date thing was real, then… well… maybe… maybe it wouldn’t be so bad.

Interacting with @Viciousmarrow (Emily)
Location: Near the auction stage

As Abigail was asked the dumbest series of questions she could remember being asked, she frowned. It seemed her future date was drunk. More accurately, she was trashed. Em was slurring her words to the point where Bee could barely understand her, but luckily that didn’t make her any less cute. Actually, Bee reasoned to herself. It kind of makes her cuter. The bright red blush on Em’s cheeks was almost as bright as the red hair on her head. She didn’t initially respond to the accusations that Em was spitting, instead taking in the situation.

It was almost like an anime with the finger jutting in her chest and Emily so close to her face that Bee could see the color of her lips. Was she gonna fall? She seemed a little shaky as she wobbled and waited for Bee to give her the answers she was demanding. Bee almost considered walking away and leaving Em to her own thoughts, just to be dramatic, but she had her wits about her well enough to justify those thoughts as the weed coursing through her bloodstream.

“Why would I put your name in the thing then spend a bunch of money that isn’t mine to win you? Isn’t that just like… asking you out with extra steps?” Abigail asked, tilting her head as she looked into Emily’s eyes. Please. If I had the balls to ask someone out, I wouldn’t have needed to steal my brother’s wallet. I should probably give that back to him… Bee thought to herself, her lips once again curling into a frown as she caught sight of Bradley walking away from the stage in the corner of her eye. Who had even signed up for him to go up there? It didn’t seem like the kind of thing that Brad would have done for himself.

“You didn't put yourself in the auction!? I didn’t bid on you because I hate you! Why would I hate you? You’re cute and funny.” Both were true, and both were the reasons she’d bid so high. Bee had waited patiently for someone worth her money to walk onto stage, and as soon as Em had she’d been quick to seize the opportunity. “You’re stressing too much. You should smoke some weed.” Bee suggested. If she had any extra on her, she would have handed it over then and there, but she only had her pen and the emergency joint tucked away in her purse.

“Shouldn’t you be getting ready to play music, anyway?” She asked Emily, finally taking a step away. “Uh… I need to go find my brother. You gonna be okay, killer? I don’t want you to die before we go out.”

The Auction was a much needed distraction from the events that had transpired earlier this day, with Levi. On top of that, she was finally with her best friend, especially thanks to the tall guidance of Bradley. With a water bottle in her hand, don’t ask her how she got it (it just showed up), Estella took a sip and smiled to herself, happy that another friend was back. Happy to know that she could hangout with Bradley in the future. He was sweet and kind. She hoped he knew how happy she was that he was home.

Levi and Bradley might’ve both left town for their own personal reasons, but the difference between them was Bradley kept in touch. Levi didn’t. Something that might seem small to some people left a wound in her heart she didn’t know how to heal. She thought back on Bradley’s words: Levi is looking for you, he seemed pretty concerned. And couldn’t believe how painful that sudden realization of such simple words could make her feel.

Levi kept in contact with one person and that one person wasn’t her… he didn’t even care to write to her or anything to let her know he was okay. No. What he did was show up years later out of the blue and welcome her at his cafe as if there wasn’t an elephant in the room. He pretends like everything is okay, when nothing was. Not for her. Not for Tommy. He destroyed them. While she can’t speak on Tommy’s behalf, she could speak for herself and she didn’t know if she could ever forgive him for doing exactly what her mother did to her when she was young. At least her mom made a gradual disappearance. Levi completely ghosted her.

Shaking the sudden ache in her chest, Stella turned and smiled at her best friend and new friend. Maybe today would turn around for her now that she was with Reya and… Talie, was it? Who needs a dumb boy to dampen her mood when she has her girls at her side!

Levi worried about me? Yeah right.

Talie had returned to the picnic table with cocktails, and Reya was deliberate to make sure Stella was cut off. Part of Stella didn’t want her buzz to go down, because if it did, she’d get sleepy and Lord knows she didn’t need to fall asleep somewhere random like last time. As her friends made conversation, Stella looked up at the stage to where Tommy was sitting. She was worried about him and wondered if she should check on him. At the same time, she didn’t see Reya all day and today was her father’s angelversary. Hopefully… Tommy would understand. If she had her phone, she would text him but at the moment she could not. For now, she buried the worry to focus on the two around her. He was fine, right?

“Tommy is super handsome,” Stella agreed with Talie, before offering, “If you need a Tommy 101 class, lemme know. Maybe not right now. Tonight is for the GIRLS,” and she was definitely slurring her words so class could be more gibberish than not, even if to her she sounded coherent and comprehensible, “but another day, for sure. For sure. Come find me.” When Talie talked about getting Reya a date the old fashioned way, Stella couldn’t help but chuckle. For as long as she could remember, Reya liked Zachary and to this day, Reya still hadn’t gained the courage to ask him out.

Maybe having a new friend added to the mix would help inspire Reya to live a little. Take a risk and try to chase something for herself rather than for her family and the Inn. Always worried about her family and the Inn. She couldn’t judge her bestie though because she was just like her. That’s what brought them together in the first place, oh, and her cat named Pearl. Stella, like Reya, was worried about her family and the ranch more than she was worried about herself. Still, they both needed to live and chase what makes them feel. Maybe, just maybe, Talie could help them both with just that.

“Before we go,” Stella responded, jumping up and joining Reya, waiting for Talie. Her train of thought and words were interrupted by Kayleigh yelling Levi’s name and jumping off the stage into his arms. Turning her attention away from the girls, Stella found her heart sinking at the sight and to make matters worse, she saw Lily who looked absolutely devastated. Should she intervene? No. Stop that. Stop worrying. Stop thinking. Let it go.

Once again, she pulled herself out of this constant loop of focusing on him, and others, and turned back to Reya and Talie. “Right… what was I going to say?” Her amber eyes searched around aimlessly as if it was going to answer her question. She stared briefly at her hand and water bottle, when her gaze focused on the bracelet. “Oh right! Before I forget,” she cleared her throat and put the water bottle down on the table. In a quick motion she took the bracelet off her wrist and gently grabbed Reya’s hand, slipping the jewelry around her wrist. “I’ll explain what makes it special later. Right now, though?” She pulled Reya to her, holding onto her arm, before looking at Talie and playfully grinning, “Let’s go listen to some good music and maybe get some… chicken and waffles? I’m STARVING.”

‘What am I doing…’ Levi thought as the auction came to an end, his heart racing with nerves. Perhaps it was just the beer talking, but seeing Kitty in person after so long had triggered immediate guilt and shame. In the past he might have run the other direction and avoided her at all costs, but he was a changed man. Or, at least he was trying to be. That’s what he had told himself when he arrived back in Sanctuary, anyway. It was time to take responsibility for his actions. He was tired of running. Despite not apologizing yet to Stella and Tommy, he’d thought about apologizing to everyone for years, including Kitty. He’d never been able to find the words, but what better time than now? He’d always been the type to go “all or nothing”, so why not throw himself into the fire by buying a date with the women he felt so much discomfort around? He needed to apologize to her and the rest of the group he had driven a wedge in between before leaving for college, no matter how uncomfortable.

While Kitty wasn’t exactly innocent in what had occurred between them all those years ago, he still felt the need to say something. Their “spark” had been brief all those years back, but he still felt guilt after sleeping with her and basically disappearing immediately afterwards. It wasn’t very gentlemanly of him. He knew it couldn’t have been easy for her after he left either; the friend group likely would’ve turned on her and that didn’t even include what everyone in town would’ve said behind her back. In all honesty, Kitty was the easiest apology he could start with. The most uncomfortable conversation he could imagine was with his old flame Lily Barker. He’d gone over that scenario countless times in his mind and it never came out right. His heart twisted thinking about it.

Suddenly, as Kitty’s eyes met his, Levi realized he had been staring at her the entire time his mind had been spiraling. As she registered his stare, he lifted one of his hands in greeting and gave her a half smile. His gaze shifted over to Brad then, his smile morphing into a small smirk. Seeing Brad up there on stage had been hilarious. People had been so invested in bidding for him, though! All the ladies wanted to be treated like a queen from a guy like him. Ironic that it was Kitty who ultimately won the bid. He wasn’t sure if Brad would be very interested in a date with Kitty, but the guy needed to get out there regardless!

“Oh shit.” Levi’s eyes widened as Kitty began sprinting towards him from the stage. He quickly put the beer he had been drinking down on the stage to free up his hands. “Kitty, stop! You’re gonna hurt your-.”

“LEVIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!” With zero fear in her heart, Kitty sprang from the stage directly at him.

“Jesus!” Levi caught Kitty in the air and brought her in towards his chest as he stumbled back a few steps. Strangely, he appreciated her full trust in his ability to catch her. It was lucky for her that he hadn’t had too many beers earlier, otherwise they’d have both been on the ground by now.

“You’re insane.” He teased and couldn’t help but laugh, admiring her carefree nature. Feeling her hands wrap around him, he could suddenly feel his heart pounding in his chest again. This time he wasn’t sure if it was from the nerves, the adrenaline, or did she still have that effect on his biological reactions?

“So a date, huh? I hope you have something fun planned! It’s been so long since we got together. I’m excited. I love surprises!”

Levi could feel his cheeks flush as she mentioned the last time they were together. Typically he was the one making others blush, it was odd the other way around. “Mmhm…” He only managed to get out, feeling at a loss for words. What the hell had he done to himself?

Hearing the shattering of glass nearby, Levi broke his attention on Kitty and searched for the source of the sound. Finding the last person he would’ve wanted to see in this moment, he saw Lily Barker staring at him in shock. His heart suddenly felt like it had jumped up into his throat and stopped beating all together. Time slowed as he stared back at her, frozen and speechless.

Feeling Kitty move in his arms, Levi snapped his gaze back to her. “Uh…” In rapid fashion he set Kitty down onto the ground and took a small step away from her to put some distance between them. “Uhm…” He nervously glanced back towards Lily’s direction, seeing another blonde woman helping her pick up the things that were dropped. He looked back at Kitty again, trying his hardest to keep his heart from having a panic attack. Why did Lily have to be here now?! Out of all the times she could’ve ran into him, it was now? This had to be some sort of sick joke.

“Y-Yes.. I, uh.. I was, uh…” He couldn’t help but look in Lily’s direction again for a brief second, then returned back to Kitty. “I was hoping we could, uh… catch up.” He cleared his throat and picked up the beer from the stage with a shaky hand and took a swig. He was going to need more of these in a few minutes. He’d completely lost all of his nerve stuck in between these two women. Everything in his body was telling him to run, but he forced himself to stay in the moment. “I’ll, uh… I’ll plan something fun for us.”

So badly he wanted to end the conversation and go to Lily, but how could he leave Kitty? That wasn’t a good start for an apology. And did Lily even want him to approach her? He highly doubted it…

“Aren’t you supposed to be on stage soon?” He inquired, noticing the flow of people going from one stage to another, and seeking out an exit from this current situation.

Ana smiled to herself as she hopped down off the stage, thrilled with the outcome of the auction. So many people in town had been nice and bid on her despite her being new to town and a complete stranger! It was heartwarming. She had originally signed up for the auction thinking it would be a good way to meet new people and find some new friends for her new life. However, her plan quickly changed when the Russian man, Moxi, began to compete for a date with her. He wasn’t exactly a stranger anymore, but it seemed like she had made a new friend after all. They had shared a couple drinks together over a few games of cornhole earlier in the day and she was flattered that he hadn’t gotten sick of her yet. Even if he was just doing it for charity, it was sweet. He interested her and she supposed she must’ve interested him, too.

Looking around, Ana tried to spot the blonde man in the crowd so that she could thank him, but was interrupted as another woman called out and approached her. “Are you… Ana Rork? The teachers at the academy have just been talking all about this new pretty blonde woman, and I just had to come and welcome you to our town!”

‘Teachers?’ Ana thought, wondering how any teachers had heard of her at all. She hadn’t been to any schools. ‘Oh. The cashier… ’ She remembered a grocery store cashier who had mentioned that she was a fourth grade teacher working part time for the grocery store while school was out for the summer. People weren’t kidding about news traveling fast in small towns!

“This is for you, by the way!”

"Oh, wow!" Ana’s blue eyes grew wide and sparkled as she looked at the beautiful basket of assorted items that was offered to her. Purposefully, Ana did not correct the woman on the incorrect last name that she had. It was better that way. "You did all this for me? You really didn’t have to, but wow! I’m so honored, thank you so much!"

Seeing the woman's attention snap away, Ana followed her gaze to find another couple being playful with each other near the stage. Ana smiled, thinking the scene was rather cute until she heard the crash of glass against the ground. Ana jumped and turned her attention back to the taller woman, finding the basket on the ground and the woman in what appeared to be shock.

"Oh, no. Are you okay?" Ana asked, looking her over to see if any of the shattered glass had injured her. Noticing liquid leaking out from the broken bottle of Fireball, Ana immediately went into action and picked up the books from the basket to try and save them. With the books gathered in one arm, Ana picked up the large pieces of glass and gathered them into the alcohol soaked basket, hoping to save anyone at the festival from stepping on glass. "There we go." She looked back up at the woman and saw the tears trailing down her cheeks. Ana frowned and stood, picking up the basket holding the broken glass. "It’s okay, the rest of the basket is saved!" She forced a smile, hoping to lighten the mood. Was the woman upset about the basket or… Ana turned her head to look at the couple again, watching the man set down the girl who she assumed to be his girlfriend.

Ana turned her attention back to the gift giver, "You want to get out of here?" She wasn’t exactly sure what the situation was, but clearly this stranger was upset and Ana was happy to provide a distraction if that’s what she needed. "Since you know my name, what’s yours?"

Cute?! Funny?! This girl was actually serious about this whole date thing?! Em was completely dumbfounded by Bee’s admission, her lips twisting into an embarrassed expression as she gazed at the other woman. She even felt slightly more sobered up by this revelation. Nobody had ever expressed interest in her before, so this was… new. The finger jabbed into Bee’s chest fell to Em’s side, and there was a slight flutter of hope in her chest.

“Wait… This washnt shupposed to go like this.” She cocked her head, and murmured something incoherent under her breath. For a moment, Em seemed to be in quiet contemplation, drilling her gaze into Bee’s own as if trying to pry the truth from her. A slight dopey smile spread on Em’s face when she came to her own conclusion about Bee’s words. “I...believe you, but I gotsh a lot of questionsh.” Her tone was even and reasonable for once tonight.

“And I… think you’re cute too, even ifsh I don’t know you very well. Kinda alwaysh have thought that, but.... We can talk aboutsh thish later… Causesh you’re right. I gotta shing tonight.” Em acknowledged. She fidgeted with her hands as she talked, uncomfortable with conveying her own interest but trudging along nonetheless. “Just… I guessh… Thanksh… Thish me made me feel nice. I’ll shee you later, Bee.” With anxious steps, the youngest Snype gave her new… friend… a wave before clumsily making her way toward the stage where she and her family were supposed to perform.

Zack snorted from his vantage point, carefully observing the scene around him. His sister actually had not one, but two dates, one of which he had to pay for since Em, at least to his knowledge, didn't have any money. Judging by her bearing while she chatted with one her girl date, she had completely forgotten that she had accidentally bid on that Archer guy.

On the other hand, Kitty was, in Kitty fashion, causing some kind of scene with Levi. She also had two dates: One with Levi, and one with Brad, who he believed was the brother of Em’s lady friend. The whole Kitty dramatics got a little spicier when Zack noticed that Lily Barker had shown up. Zack hadn’t been intimately in tune with the drama, but even he knew that Lily had crushed hard on Levi back in the day. Guess she still wasn’t over it, judging by the silent breakdown she was happening as she stared at Levi and Kitty. He probably would’ve stepped in to help the poor girl, but a blonde woman he didnt recognize appeared to want to support Lily.

Well, if things were settled here, he guessed he’d start setting everything up on stage. Problem was, that was kind of a “whole band” situation, and right now his band was distracted. Out in the dispersing crowd though, he noted two fellows that might be willing to help. Slinking from the shadow of the stage, he quickly sauntered up to the duo, smiling all the way.

“Hey, you two wouldn’t happen to want to help a man in need would you? I have a whole thing of band equipment I need to unload, but my sister’s drunk and my cousin’s… probably also drunk.” Zack peered genuinely at the older muscular man, and then at the more androgynous person. Yeah, these two looked like they’d be a great help! “The jobs pretty easy, and I can pay you a little too for your time. Just gotta hook some amps up, set the drums up, make sure the laptop and the backing tracks are sorted…” He explained their potential duties, never faltering in his beaming. Hopefully they’d accept, or maybe he could get Talie and Reya to help again…

Talie "Friendly local rock nerd"

Location
Concert
Mood
Happy, aprehensive

Talie had an easy going smile, in fact she seemed to have made two friends, Reya and Stella who both seemed fun women, perhaps things were turning round for Talie?

Reyas answer was pretty down to earth and easy, comfortable pants, that was hard to get wrong. Leggings would do, she had some nice ones that went with a cute t-shirt and could jazz it up abit with some nice shoes and accessories. Her response was a nod and a smile, Talie had no Cowboy boots, hat, or that kinda thing and probably did not have time to buy them before her date she won.

"Girls night" Talie agreed with a smile, questions could wait and the fact there was a rock concert potentially gave her good vibes. Being 7 to 8 inches taller in heels than the other two women she did have to adjust slightly to talk comfortably. Her height did make finding things like dresses fun, especially when she did not want them to be shorter!

Stella had gained some water from apparently nowhere, but that probably was a good thing as she on further talking was a tad drunk and being a little tipsy, but still responsible enough to want to make sure Stella was safe.

Her vodka arrived handing over a tip, the bartender had kept them well supplied tonight. "Za piękne panie!" Giving a cheesy toast as she Downed the double vodka in one. To Beautiful ladies, They should be lucky we chose to date them." Talie translated her toast and tried to build a confident mood, they might as well make the most of it and if something happened that was good, all to the better.

Talie stood up carefully as she had already made one mistake wearing heels tonight, she had already checked the straps and tested her balance before walking after the two other women in direction of the stage.

Leaving the two friends to have their moment handing over a bracelet, the two seemed to have been friends a long time and it probably meant something. The pair seemed nice though and did not pick up any warnings from her back of mind.

"Rock on then!" Talie laughed as she joined them, waffles… maybe it was the alcohol but waffles did sound rather nice and she definitely did not eat enough today. "Waffles sound great too, with maple syrup and chocolate." Talies' mind gave a big yes to the idea and spoke rather enthusiastically.

"it's clearer this way, i see Waffles and fried chicken and the stage." Talie saw a better route through crowd, it was a little awkward at first but she soon got used to the fact both women made it to just above Talies shoulder right now. She was long used to being the tall one though. Rock music and waffles sounded excellent.

"So Lovely Ladies, Let's find music, food and Reya, someone to cuddle and keep her warm more than a teddy bear." Teasing Reya abit with a smile and mirth in her voice. Her new friend seemed to be having fun and hoped she had not over stepped it. A little light teasing, there were lots of handsome and pretty people depending on your preference, plenty of choice if she wanted they could help her get a date. "Or other toys" Talie added softly with a wink and let them choose where to go.

Mentions

Reya and Stella. The lovely ladies.

Location: The auction stage --> The music stage

Bradley watched as Kitty ran off, gone almost as quickly as she had been there to say hi to him. There had been a brief moment there where he’d thought she was going to straddle him, but luckily before he had to deal with that, she was off again. He watched her launch off of the stage and into Levi’s arms and found himself wondering why she had bought him if she was interested in Levi. Bradly was kind of used to girls being more interested in Levi than him, especially when they were in Sanctuary. With Kitty off and on an adventure though, Bradley could finally go about his business. He frowned as he observed the dispersing crowd from his chair on the stage. He’d lost Stella, and Stella had been the one who knew where the petting zoo was. This put a damper on his plans to play with the rabbits.

Slowly and with great effort, Bradley forced the weed haze out of his mind. He couldn’t find the petting zoo, largely because he was an idiot. What else is there to do at the festival? There was music coming, Bradley kind of recalled that the announcer lady had mentioned that… which meant what? Did he want to listen to the music they played? Would it be good? He wasn’t sure how he expected himself to answer any of those questions, and he found himself frustrated at how disconnected he really was from the people of his hometown. Maybe hanging out exclusively in the flower shop he owned and his house wasn’t the ideal move.

As quickly as that thought had entered his head, it was replaced by another. Where did Bee get the money to pay for her date? He asked himself, then reached back to touch his wallet pockets and found them empty. Oh. That’s where she got the money. When the fuck did she take that? He stood up, thankful he at least had some cash in his front pockets. He wasn’t as angry as he should have been, but what was he going to do? Besides, it was for charity — he could write off the total from his taxes, and that was kind of cool. Of course, capital gains taxes would kick his ass regardless.

He stepped off the stage as thoughts continued to fly through his head. Apparently, when he was this stoned, he was just as flighty as Kitty was. That was almost funny to him, but what wasn’t funny to him was the almost ravenous hunger he felt settling in the pit of his stomach. “Fuck. I got the munchies.” This observation, Bradley made aloud. He stepped down from the stage. Unlike Kitty’s dramatic exit, he did not leap from the stage. He met eyes with Levi as he briefly considered asking him to go get some food, then figured he was probably busy with the redhead in his arms, so he decided to go it alone. He sniffed the air. A one man wolf pack, his THC-enhanced nose picked out the scents and flavors of something he had loved since he was a baby: fair food.

If he was in a cartoon, he would have found himself floating toward the tantalizing smells wafting into his nostrils. Once he arrived at the makeshift food truck gathering, Bradley could feel his eyes welling up with tears. It was a joyous occasion! There was food everywhere. What was that? Quesadillas? No… no, tacos. No, wait. Fried chicken!? The sweet maple hint of waffles?

Was this the greatest day of his life? Maybe if Kitty had sat on him. Wait, that was just the weed — Kitty was his little sister’s best friend. Bee would hit him with a shovel if she knew he had such thoughts. Wait a second, was that churros he smelled? Okay, nevermind, the day was back in the running for the greatest in his life.

He found himself wishing he had someone to share this moment with. Stella, Levi, his sister, his grandparents… hell, even the sheriff would have been better than complete solitude. Bradley wasn’t unaccustomed to being alone, but he was similarly unaccustomed to situations where it would be nice to have someone else there. It was one thing to get the munchies while alone in your room in Los Angeles and playing Final Fantasy 14, but it was an entirely different thing to get it at a fair. Fair food was special.

By the time he was sitting on the ground in front of the music stage, Bradley had two churros in each hand as he alternated which he took bites out of. Steaming bags of food sat on either side of him, and Bradly was pretty confident he was situated for the evening. In fact he may have bought too much food, though Bradly wouldn’t have admitted that even if he was sober. He wanted to have good snacks for the music show! He’d managed to get at least one thing from each stand, including a caramel apple he’d bought from Stella’s family cart.

He took another bite of the churro and felt himself melting into the grassy knoll upon which he sat. Hopefully the band didn’t suck, because if they did, he wasn’t sure he was going to have the energy to get up. At least not until he finished eating his feast. As he opened the container of chicken and waffles, he noticed an object fly from the sky and land in front of him: his wallet. That meant…

“Jesus, Bradley. What the fuck? You’re going to get fat again if you let the munchies win.” Abigail had returned from… well, wherever she had been.

Abigail couldn’t help but stare as Em wandered away. She wasn’t staring in a ‘hate to see her go, but love to watch her leave’ angle. Bee felt it was more of a look of concern as she gazed after Em. Was she really in a position where she should be performing in front of a crowd? Let alone singing… she could barely speak without slurring her words. Still, she couldn’t help but feel good about the conversation. She’d never really been called cute before, at least not by someone who wasn’t a creep.

After Em walked away, she pulled headphones up over her ears, with a pleased smile on her lips. She’d secured a date with literally the most attractive person in Sanctuary, using money that wasn’t hers, and that felt insanely good. It helped that it was her bastard brother’s money, and that the date she was going to go on was a candlelit dinner and she might get to kiss a cute girl. What did the announcer say about her date again? … Em has always wanted to be treated to a candlelit dinner... Wait. Treated!? Does that mean I have to do all the work!? Abigail frowned. She hadn’t realized that in the heat of the moment. It wasn’t really her fault, Em was cute and distracting. Could she even… cook a candlelit dinner? Probably not…

Whatever, that was a different day’s problem. She had to get her date’s number and then tell her when to meet at her place. Should I have done that before she walked off? I suck. She’d figure the details out later, it was a problem for another day. As she stepped away from the auction stage, Bee wondered how that was even legal. Was baiting for charity donations with eligible bachelors and bachelorettes normal? She knew just as well as anyone else that no one was going to a date auction for the charity. It was for kissing.

Method Man tear the roof off
Jump in the pit

As the music reached its crescendo in her headphones, Bee thought about how she was going to handle this. She was self-aware enough to know that she needed to earn a kiss if she was going to get one (she was well on her way though!). Even if she’d technically purchased the date off the market, that guaranteed nothing. She’d have to make sure Em had a good time if she was going to get any kisses at all, let alone one that was memorable. Did she know anything about Em? Only vaguely. She and Em hadn’t been that close in high school, but neither of them had finished. Was that something they could connect over? Abigail thought about how she felt about high school and how that had gone for her. She dismissed that idea, realizing it was stupid. No one wanted to talk about high school — especially if they fucking dropped out.

Wandering through the festival as she waited for the concert to start, Bee found a popcorn vendor and was happy to carry the bag around as she walked. Did she know anyone who knew anything about Em? Abigail thought about it as she tossed a handful of popcorn in her mouth. Chewing thoughtfully, she considered all the people she knew. There weren't many. It was mostly her brother and…

“OH. MY. GOD. KITTY.”

She didn’t even think about Kitty! How did she forget!? Kitty and Em were FUCKING FAMILY. Kitty probably had all the cheat codes! She almost fumbled it as she pulled her phone out and rapidly threw her fingers across the keyboard.

To: Kit-Kat
KAYLEIGH. I need you to give me the tech to make sure Bee has a good time
I didn’t spend thousands of my brother’s hard earned dollars to not kiss her

Satisfied with that, Abigail dropped her phone in her pocket. She knew Kitty well enough that she was almost expecting a burst of text messages that hardly acknowledged what she was asking for, so she decided to ignore the buzzing once it started. Instead, Abigail focused on finding her way back toward the performance stage. She did want to watch the show after all, and she needed to eventually find her brother and return his wallet to him.

Once she got there, she could see her brother sitting square in front of the center of the stage, as close as he could get without stepping on it. More importantly, she could see the bags of food he was surrounded by, and it made her scowl as she scarfed down popcorn. Stomping over to him, Abigail yeeted her brother’s wallet as hard as she could and it flew threw the air.

“Jesus, Bradley. What the fuck? You’re going to get fat again if you let the munchies win.”

Bradley turned to look at Abigail with wide, bloodshot eyes. “I thought Kitty was going to sit on my lap earlier. Sorry… I should have kept that to myself.”

“OW!” Bradley complained, reaching up to rub the spot on his arm where Bee had socked him.

“What? You’re letting the intrusive thoughts win! Shut up! Kitty wouldn’t touch you with a ten foot pole. Can I have some food?”

“You have popcorn.” Bradley protested as he grabbed his wallet and slid it back into his pocket as he popped what was left of his churros into his mouth, shaking his head. His voice was somewhat bitter. Abigail was trying, once again, to ruin his day - only this time, Bradley was simply not having it.

And Bee knew her brother well enough to know when her presence wasn’t wanted. “Fine. Enjoy your snacks then. I guess I’ll go get my own!”She huffed, and then spun to stomp off to bother someone else instead.

“AND SAVE ME A SEAT! I NEED A FRONT ROW FOR EM’S SONG!”

“To Beautiful ladies, They should be lucky we chose to date them.”

Reya grinned as her newest friend made a toast to the women and took down a shot of vodka like a pro. Talie knew how to have a good time! “Damn right!” She agreed, giggling. Reya almost began to regret not taking Talie up on her offer for another drink, but she felt obligated to make sure Stella was alright. Always the “mom” of her friend groups, Reya fell into the role with ease. It had always been difficult for her to let go in the same way that other people seemed to be able to.

Reya paused as she waited for Stella to find her thoughts, noticing her best friend's attention being taken away by something else. She glanced over in the direction Stella had been looking, finding Levi and Kitty making a scene with one another. ‘Are they dating now?’ She thought, watching as Levi held Kitty in his arms.

As Stella returned to the moment and bestowed a bracelet upon Reya’s wrist, she inspected it and wondered what the seemingly random gift was for. It was a cute and dainty piece of jewelry with a small orb of some sort tied in the middle, but she couldn’t quite tell what the orb was exactly; Stella would definitely have to explain later. For now, she smiled as Stella pulled her in. “You didn’t have to get me anything! I love it, though. Thank you!”

“Let’s go listen to some good music and maybe get some… chicken and waffles? I’m STARVING.”

She looked towards the band's stage as Stella brought up music and food, pondering on if she was actually hungry after all the funnel cake she had consumed earlier in the day. “You definitely need some food in you.” Reya joked, referring to Stella’s inebriated state as she felt her friend sway to-and-fro as she held onto Reya’s arm.

“Waffles sound great too, with maple syrup and chocolate.”

Clearly, Reya had two inebriated individuals to take care of. “Are you sure you guys didn’t smoke weed? You’ve got the munchies!” She laughed and shook her head, “Let’s grab something real quick and then head over. I want a good spot near the stage!” She wouldn't say why she wanted to be close to the stage, but Stella knew. Reya wanted to be there for the eye candy - the music was secondary in the priority list.

"So Lovely Ladies, Let's find music, food and Reya, someone to cuddle and keep her warm more than a teddy bear."

“Wha?!” Reya let out a playful gasp in surprise, her mouth agape with the small upturn of a smile on her lips. What was Talie up to?! “I’m just fine, thank yoouuu.” She stuck out her tongue at Talie and laughed.

"Or other toys."

Reya raised her brows as Talie winked, her smile forming into a smirk. Talie was spicy when she was drunk! ‘Is she hot or am I just…’ Her mind trailed off, unable to find an excuse. The wink, her voice, the flirtatious way she spoke… it was hard to ignore! “I think you’re the one who needs someone to keep her warm.” She teased, “Shall we find the sheriff for you after this?” She laughed and began walking with both Stella and Talie towards the nearest chicken and waffles food truck.

As the trio reached the front of the line for the food vendor, Reya broke out her wallet. “Order whatever you guys like, it’s on me!” She smiled and gave her card to the food vendor, stepping aside for the two ladies to order their food.

“AND SAVE ME A SEAT! I NEED A FRONT ROW FOR EM’S SONG!”

Reya looked over to her left as she heard someone yelling nearby, her eyes finding Bee Thompson - someone she knew only as an acquaintance who frequented the tavern often. She didn’t know Bee very well, but she had always been pleasant at the tavern - funny even. She usually came in on a mission to cure the munchies, which was amusing for Reya at least. Down on the ground, Reya eyed the man who Bee seemed to be yelling at. Brad! One of the men she had seen up for auction earlier. He looked vaguely familiar when she had seen him, but she couldn’t put together where she had known him from before. He certainly was handsome, though, and even Reya had thought about bidding on him.

‘That’s not important right now!’ Reya stopped herself, pulling her gaze away from Brad and turning her attention back to Talie and Stella. That was what was important! Girls night, like Talie said. Reya was letting her mind wander too much after her incident with Zack earlier in the day, and then Talie made her feel some type of way, and now Brad?! What was wrong with her? She needed to get laid, apparently… ‘Stoooopp!!’

Reya forced her brain to cease it’s annoying thinking and approached Talie and Stella as they retrieved their food. “All set?”

The whole auction overall didn't last that long, not that it really mattered whether or not Mitch had participated, as every 'item' up for sale was out of their budget. Somewhat crestfallen and dejected, Mitch stared at the two hundred bills, the balding old man in each slip almost mocking them for trying. Sighing, Mitch pocketed the money, gave their cheeks a couple slaps to wake up and with a fist pumped to the sky proclaimed, "Alright, time for a strong drink, and I'm buying. You coming?"

Before Barry even had a chance to answer, a young man with fiery red hair came sauntering up requesting the pair's assistance with setting up for the rock show. Barry had no idea who this kid was outside of recognizing him performing gigs around town, and while the dull ache in his upper back told him to take it easy, the easy money outweighing the scales. "Just moving a few things huh?" Barry folded his arms over, tucking his hands into his sides, "Sure, sounds easy enough, just point me where and I'll move it," turning to Mitch he prompted them to follow, "You coming?"

Mitch had a better idea of who Zack was, although still vague since he was two years Mitch's senior. The age gap meant that while they hadn't shared any classes together, they were still privy to the antics of the red head in their tiny school. Smart kid, dream of becoming a rock star; some might call it a 'waste of potential', but Mitch found it to be more impassioned, a dream to live by, and that was something they could respect. Mitch turned to Barry as he made an attempt to recruit them, "Really? Not gonna lie that drink was kind of calling to me." Their eyes gazed longingly towards the bar...

"You can drink any other time, how often do you get exclusive back stage passes from the lead performer? Besides, you came here looking for a date right?" Mitch raised their eyebrow at that, a subtle flush tone rising up their neck, "Sounds like this nice gentleman might be offering you a couple of Andrews to take home." Mitch gave Barry a solid jab to the arm as he laughed.

"Ass!" They exclaimed as they laughed at the man's stupid jokes, "Fine, fine, although I don't think he's told us who I'll be taking home tonight, I'll still help out," Mitch winked at Zack before grinning wide, both thumbs extended upwards. "Besides," they started as Zack lead the pair towards his equipment, "you don't want the fossil accidentally wiping any of your music away."

"Dude..I'm not that old."

Lily snapped her attention from Levi and Kitty and back to Ana, wiping the tears from her eyes. Bravely, she attempted to stifle any of the pain that had just shown through, forcing a smile with a sniffle and positioning herself with her back turned to the source of her pain. Lily felt terrible now, seeing that this friendly stranger had just rescued the books from being drenched in alcohol.

“I’m so sorry, um… I wasn’t expecting to see someone here… I thought they were gone for good…” She anxiously looked down at the ground, rubbing her arm. “...I guess, not everyone here in Sanctuary is a good person… Some people just bring back bad memories…” Lily didn’t name any names here, but part of her wished she was lionhearted enough to confront Levi. “Some name right? ‘Sanctuary’. But sometimes it feels like…” There was a moment of silence as the librarian trailed off from her last sentence, recognizing she was spiraling into even more of a rambling, depressive episode.

“Sorry! Sorry! When I get like this, I start to talk a lot. Sometimes my negative feelings come out, and it can be really bad…” Lily was half-talking to herself, laughing nervously as she tried to recover. “I’m Lily, by the way. Lily Barker. I work at the school. Er… I’m a librarian. At the school.” Part of her wanted to die right now, thinking that this stranger probably thought she was a maniac for coming out of the woodworks with a basket and then breaking down. So much for making new friends, right?

“...Um… But yeah, I should… probably be anywhere but here. I might just go home… I’ve seen Zack, Em, and Kayleigh play before.” There was a certain amount of bitterness attached to Kitty’s name, normally out of place coming from Lily. “They’re… like a rock band. They’re pretty good and Zack, is well… Zack, if you know what I mean.” She took a moment to point out the pretty boy redhead out behind them, careful not to look in Levi’s direction. “...So you know, it’s okay if you want to go… I’ll go home, and then I’ll drink myself to sleep and pretend tonight didn’t happen.” Again, Lily let out an anxiety riddled chuckle before starting to step away from Ana. The auburn haired woman stopped herself though, feeling guilty for saddling Ana with all of this baggage on top of the books she was holding.

“Umm… Maybe I can help you take those books to your car first? Maybe we could… get a drink together too?” Lily’s eyes widened and immediately fell back on the ground, unconsciously shuffling her feet. Rejection was clearly nothing new to her. Internally, she had a feeling this sweet blonde woman probably didn’t want to hang out with a small town yak like herself… And that would be fine… Everything was fine.

The auction ended up being quite a crazy time and Talie ended up winning the date with him —- a date only for charity. It wasn’t an actual date. She didn’t think it was, did she? Thinking about that, Thomas was not completely sure where Talie stood in those thoughts. It wasn’t an actual date. Just a fun time. It would be great finally hanging out with the woman outside of work. Only visiting her during lunch hours was probably strange. He wondered what her coworker Manny thought about that. Probably thought he was weird.

Sighing as he stepped down from the stage and he was going to thank her, but he got nervous. Jolts of nervous anxiety ran through his body and the negativity he has been stormed by all night seemed to cause him to implode on himself. “It shouldn't be a problem if aah thank her later, right?” Whispering to himself as he slipped into the crowd so he could try to make his way home. He was done with the festival. None of his friends tried to make plans. The only person to make plans ended up kissing him and bidding seven-hundred dollars on him for charity and he really didn’t know how to feel about that. It was a strange feeling. It made him feel warm and cold at the same time. Kind of shaky. Somewhat forcing a smile to his lips as well. Mixed emotions one could say but he couldn’t stay at the festival anymore. There wasn’t anything here for him, was there?

Thomas shook those thoughts away and he began to slowly make his way through the crowd, getting around people, and somewhat getting stopped by the occasional passersby that wanted to ask about the fourth of July — fireworks. When those were going to be. Where. How much money did they get for them this year? What type of show? Was music going to be synced with it? A whole bunch of questions from a whole bunch of people. The sheriff had an answer for each one of them.

Being able to break away from the crowd and the main parts of the stage, Tommy found himself on the outskirts of the date auction and listened to how others were beginning to bid on the next poor soul. I’m never doing that again… Was a thought that passed while he began to make his way through the rest of the festival. Games were still going on. Venders were still calling people to the stalls to get buyers. The man felt like he was in a twilight zone in a sense.

Almost a decade…

A decade ago was the last time the friend group ran around the festival like children. Playing games. Doing things their parents would have been angry about. Being of the age where the parents didn’t know if they should scold you, ground you, or do nothing about it. You were going to leave in a couple months for college or wherever you thought would be best for you. Practically an adult. Memories passed by his eyes while he looked over at certain games or physical locations. Remembering how Levi and him at fifteen somehow got a bag of weed from a party two weeks before the October bash. A dance the high school held. They tried it out.

The stinging in his lungs could be felt and he only tried it once and that was almost fifteen to twenty years ago. It dried his mouth and he went into a coughing fit. He couldn’t stop. Levi tried to give him a pop from the vending machine by the grocery store but it was only eating the quarters and nothing was coming out while his friend was dying by the chipped lamppost. Levi finally realized that most of the selection was out and he just had to press an unpopular flavor of pop that neither of them really cared for but he ended up getting three because of how many quarters he put in.

After chugging one and sipping another, Levi even drank the one. They had a laugh about it. Tommy told Levi that he was never trying that again and Levi was going to have to find someone else to smoke with him. He thought his friend understood with the smile that came back at him. Both of them were smiling like idiots. It was probably because of the small high that hit their systems.

That night, Tommy found himself in a rough position with his father. The man had a heavy hand and a sharper belt when his eldest son came home smelling like the devils plant was what he called it. That night, he rode his bike about two hours to the Serrano’s homestead and slept in their barn. He was too embarrassed to even ask Javier to stay in the house and didn’t want the man worrying or anything. Remembering how a young Estella found him broken and bruised in the morning. She was so worried. He remembered how her big doe eyes filled with worry, concern, care, and she instantly tried helping him in any way she could.

He told her not to tell anyone but being the good girl she was. She told her dad, most likely not on purpose, when she went into the house to get him something. Instead of meeting Estella at the barn door, Javier opened it up and Tommy felt fear rise in him. He didn’t know why he was scared or maybe terrified but he was. He felt like he was going to get in trouble by the man but he was brought inside the house instead and a few questions were asked. It was nothing. That was the most common answer he would give and he knew Javier knew he was lying. He was glad that the older man didn’t push too much.

Sighing at the memory, Tommy continued to walk through the festival and other memories were coming to light. Him and Levi did almost everything together and he did miss that.
