Umbra: The Abyssal Connection

A world shattered into factions. A lawless world, plunged back into the near stone age from a fatal mistake.

The Umbra Corp, the ones with the most technology and an iron grip on the world, they have sent out their prized experiment to finally put the dark forces plaguing the world to rest.

However, ‘dark’ is a figurative term, and changes depending on who is speaking. Many forces depend on the darkness to survive. And many, many factions absolutely hate the Umbra Corp.

You raise your blaster, your laser sword and your spectral fist, ready to fight to protect what is important to you, and carve a path out to achieve your dreams.

Welcome to Umbra: The Abyssal Connection, a tale of hardship, grit, and survival. It is set in post-apocalyptic times, where society has collapsed due to a toxic accident that has changed the face of the world and reduced most of the population.

This will be faction-focused, with main factions being the Umbra Corp (the main baddies), Ghost Corp (armed resistance), the Wilds (the darkness and source of seductive power), and the Lawless (the boogeymen that prowl the broken world).

This is set at least 200 years in the future, so those with technology have space stations and a new tech called Abyssal Energy.

There is also a supernatural power connected to the Abyss that the Wilds use, and every faction covets this power. This supernatural power is what Abyssal Energy tries to imitate horribly.

You could play any one of these factions, as a Umbra Corp mercenary, a Lawless thief, or even a Wild stalker.

Ideally, it will be up to the group to work together and take down Umbra Corp, or fight amongst themselves and watch the world tear itself apart even more.

You can read the prequel story here, where three unique characters will be joining you.

Color me interested!

But I'm curious as to how the memories work for the new characters. Is everybody just waking up again? It sounds like these are survivors on the outside of the prequal setting, that didn't get put in an experimental memory-wipe inducing stasis.

Yes, that's correct. There's a whole living, breathing world out there beyond the Umbra Corp facility that have just been living and fighting amongst themselves this whole time. New players that are not Umbra Corp test subjects will have their memories and different ways they maintain their abyssal connection. These abyssal connections are mainly achieved through a live-in Wild (connected to the soul), or being a Wild.

This looks really neat!

Is there any reason I couldn't be an ex-Umbra-employee Ghost resistance fighter, or does that work for a character idea? I'm kinda thinking "Starry eyed kid joins evil corporation for prominence, realizes it is bad actually, eventually gets out and joins the resistance to try to get others out as well" for a starting point, and build from there.

@illirica Hello! That idea would work great, absolutely.

I am aiming to have the OOC up within a week.

Is a Wild a spirit?

So people either have some bond with a spirit that lets them perform what amounts to magic or they are some form of spirit?

Will you need those of us that have been in the first part to resubmit our characters?

Yes, or you can be a run-away test subject with an artifical connection made, giving you supernatural powers. And yes, a Wild is a spirit, or a monster, they can be corporeal or spectral. There's a lot of room to play with if you want to go that route.

I am doing some edits to the CS, so I would need it re-submitted, if that's alright. ^^;

Interesting, thank you!

A wild definitely seems interesting and skimming the original thread it would be a different perspective that I would enjoy writing.

Either way, you have my interest.

Interest achieved.

Feeling a bit lawless or maybe ghost resistance, but I'll confirm when the OOC is up.

Excellent to hear! I was hoping someone would lean towards Lawless. Of course, the OOC will give a lot more information, so you can choose whichever you want.

The OOC is nearly complete, I hope to have it up in a few days.
