Back at the castle.

A boat trip, some rivers, some lakes, some mountains. It’s been, how long? It was impossible to tell. The colours of the sky, as she had seen back when they were outside, only fluctuated at seemingly random intervals. Sometimes it was always sunset. Sometimes it was always dawn. Sometimes rainbows can be seen looking into into the direction of the sun.

The first thing Leila did after the lot arrived at the living quarters the castle assigned them, was to sleep. The beds were comfortable and smelt of vanilla and candy frost topping; and Leila slept for a very, very long time. At least, of course, it felt like a very long time - that there was no exact way to accurately tell time when one was asleep was a well-established fact, and that time didn’t work properly in Nowhere was a less verified, yet nevertheless widely recognized notion. So she rested. She also dreamt. But mainly she rested.

Sometimes she would wake up for moments. She’d look around for signs, out of a window to try to get a clue for what time is it, only to realize that it was pointless to go so. She’d sit up in bed and think about things - time, and other stuff. Candies and pastries and particle physics. Once in a while there’ll float across her mind a thought or two about the past:

”The longer you stay, the more you forget.”

When was her birthday? What day was it? How many steps was it from her bedroom to the gate, from the gates to the Library? What did her parents look like? What was the last book she read? She would try to recall things, and find that she couldn’t. Not like that bothered her, though.

One a while she’d stand up, walk around, go turn the lights on or off, or to fetch a book from the shelf to perhaps read a few pages from before deciding that it made no sense at all. She’d be reminded that there were about a dozen parts of her body that would ache if she moved them in specific ways. A couple of more severe injuries were wrapped up in bandages. Curious, she didn’t remember anyone treating her injuries after they returned to the castle. Neither did she remember taking a bath, or changing. Yet on the exposed skin, the bruises were going away slowly, however, and the few cuts had become only subtle pink lines, so she decided most of it was getting better over time. But time is confusing, and her ankle still hurts when she puts her weight on it, so she would find herself curling back up into the bedsheets and the whole thing starts over again.

* * * *

Tea.

On that one day The queen invited the Lost Souls to another of her tea parties and Leila showed up rather early.

"Don't be shy, my lovelies. Eat, eat, after that little adventure you must all be famished."

Strangely, Leila wasn’t that hungry. She didn’t eat much in the last three days, yet she wasn’t hungry. She actually missed tea, though. The fragrance dissipating in the air, the gentle twirling of fragments of dried leaves on the bottom of a cup (fluid dynamics!)...and above all, she kind of missed caffeine.

Two-Thirds - the Nobody that accompanied them for much of their trip, who was now serving the Queen tea produced from ingredients taken from an intricate set of metal containers - it seems, was the provider of most of the beverage that was supplied at the feast. There were also numerous kettles and pots and other containers lining the platforms that rested one layer above the plethora of sweets and pastries. Leila inspected the inscribed text on the ceramic but couldn’t make out much, so for most of the time at the party she spent tasting small amounts of various kinds of the hot, fragrant liquid that sometimes also glowed in unreasonably vivid colours. Most of the flavours made as little sense as the text on the kettles - most unlike anything she ever tasted, some were remotely familiar. There was also this one particular pot that was exactly like the morning tea the old man used to prepare.

The old man.

What was his name again?

"That mission was really interesting, huh?"

Between her third and fourth cup of that slightly nostalgic brand of tea, Leila turned her attention to the voice coming from the other side of the table. She looked over to see the the human boy in a tux and bowtie and his hair apparently meticulously fashioned by someone other than himself.

Harper. Good. She remembered this name.

She didn’t know much of him, though. She wasn’t sure if that Harper was the person to first greet her when she arrived in Nowhere was a correct memory. If it was, then she must have ignored him the first time round - way to make a good first impression. She also saw Jasper sitting not far away, gazing at a decorative vase for a no particular reason.

Ongoing conversation. Leila pulled her attention back at the boy.

"I mean, how are you doing? How's Haku? How do you like, erm, Nowhere so far?"

Haku?

She hadn’t seen Haku around. Huh.

She wasn’t really aware of it yet: she did not like the recent tendency of not being able to answer questions. Unpredictable physics. Nonsense language. Missing information. What of Nowhere was for her to think? Any theory here here would certainly be met with numerous exceptions, contradictions, and paradoxes. A theory that predicts the existence of such constant exceptions would be itself an exception. Any opinion about Nowhere, in a similar fashion, will also always be met with numerous reasons that result the eventual conclusion that the opinion is not justified.

In Nowhere, everything does not compute. Leila did not like that. Oh wait, that was an opinion about Nowhere.

Half a second it took for Leila’s brain to go through all that and to come forth with an eventual response, which was in turn uttered to the boy in a tux waiting for an answer..

Mr. Cuddles certainly lived up to his name and reputation.

Vincent could fell his lungs being crushed beneath his straining, tightening ribs, as Mr. Cuddles' incredible grip tightened and sandwiched the three men together. From Vince's lips escaped a short deflating wheeze. Not only was the cuddle horrendously tight, but being so painfully close to some guy, Inadi, who he had never even met before didn't help matters. Being squashed next to ladies was far more preferable. He couldn't complain about how close he was to the glaring hair coloured Lesley, but he wished he could substitute Inadi for Riley. That would have been nice.

"Don't... don't worry about... Inadi..." Vince gasped, tapping the bear's arm rapidly in the hopes that Mr. Cuddles would relent. "We'll... look after... Inadi..." Hopefully comforting the bear's worries might prompt him to release his hold?

"Oh, Vincent! You're too kind!" Mr. Cuddles bobbed from side to side in happiness. Vincent's ploy had worked, and the bear released his grip on the three men. This time to replace it and focus all of his chipper love to Vincent, wrapping his arms around the blonde, hoodied wearing man and taking him into an unbreakable hold. The back of Vince's chair splintered and cracked, shattering into pieces, with Vince's spine threatening to follow. Inadi and Lesley watched in horror as they recollected their breath. What an altruistic man!

A minute later, the cuddle was broken, as was the man lying on the cake shop's wooden floor, his spirit floating out from his body and towards the heavens above. The tarts and chocolate rolls Mr. Cuddles had offered for Vincent to take on his journey sounded divine - that was, if he ever got the chance to eat them. As Vincent laid on the floor, Mr. Cuddles returned his attention to the rest of his guests.

"Good... luck... with... Mrs. Panda..." Vincent's raised head smacked back down onto the ground.

Inadi didn't really have time to react to being picked up by the eight foot bear he had been calling his boss for the last few days. To be honest he hated when he got manhandled like that in front of people. He wasn't the most impressive physical specimen out there but the idea that he was picked up like a small bag of feathers made him feel even more inadequate. Again though, he couldn't think about that much in the middle of the moment.

After being thrown into a chair between Vincent and Lesley he looked up as Mr. Cuddles began explaining his feelings about the whole situation of him leaving. While he appreciated the concern, calling him out for not being the bravest out there made him very concerned. Just what would he need to be brave about out there? He wasn't really told about what all was going to be happening to him once this person decided to show up and take him away. Was he going to be some kind of assistant to something dangerous? Join some rag tag group of heroes on some ridiculous quest to save someone? At this point, considering where he was or wasn't if you took the name of the land seriously, anything could be the case. Hell, he may even be going somewhere more ridiculous. And he was working for an eight foot top hat wearing bear here.

Before he could laugh he suddenly felt the furry grip of death around him. Mr. Cuddles was a hugger. That much Inadi knew. He just hated how the bear never remembered how his strength far outweighed the necessary power needed to crush bone. Every time he was hugged by Mr. Cuddles Inadi felt pops in his spine. This time the hug was closer to his head as he felt pats from the bear's giant paws. He felt the wind in his lungs becoming strained and desperately tried to wheeze out a desperate attempt to scream. Sadly it only got worse from there.

Suddenly Vince, one of the men sitting next to him, began getting pressed up from behind him. Every single bone in his body felt like it was melding with the other man's. Then Lesley became involved and it only grew worse. His chest felt like it was being crushed slowly and his ribs were simply victims of love. Too much love in this instance.

"Don't... don't worry about... Inadi... We'll... look after... Inadi..."

As Vince began speaking Inadi could do nothing but nod at him wildly. This was the best way to get Mr. Cuddles to let go. Give him confidence. Either that or simply mention that you smelled something burning. He remembered a similar situation in which he needed to breath after one of the bear's deep hugs and mentioned that he thought a cake was burning. The bear dropped him and immediately ran for the kitchen. Inadi wished he could do that now but with the large furry arm around his neck before and with his face practically devouring the bear's chest it was impossible to speak.

As Mr. Cuddles let go of him and went directly to Vince, Inadi watched with a wince as the poor boy had his spine nearly splintered like the chair that would have to be replaced. Inadi had seen that kind of scene before. “We lose more furniture that way to be honest.” Inadi whispered to Lesley as he began trying to pop his neck back into order and check to see if his lungs still worked properly. As Mr. Cuddles turned his attention back to them Inadi looked up at the bear and showed a nervous face. Another hug like that and he wouldn't be able to leave the cake shop....or walk anywhere to be honest.

Mr.Cuddles: "What do you say, would the three of you not mind some extra luggage?"

Riley: "Mr. Cuddles...you have to be kidding. Your desserts are to die for, I wouldn't mind carrying a cart-full of your cake."

Nodding his head in impatient agreement, he continued to wolf down his own share of the mashed up cake. Bite after bite, explosions of flavour hit his senses like an atomic blast. Its taste was far better than anything anyone could attempt to recreate back in earth. Eyes trailing after Riley as she returned with the freshly baked pie in one hand and the axe in another, the smell diffusing from the warm delicacy was rather intoxicating, yet his mouth could salivate no more. It's over production of saliva from just looking and smelling may have just tired out his ability to drool over another presentation of food. His stare remained focused and oddly unblinking, he grinned as the blow came down hard on the pie's upper crust, splicing through whatever filling lay within, but it also seemed to go through two other items. Watching confusedly as Riley skipped back to her seat in a hurried mannerism, his eyebrows curled in suspicion at the female.

A voice radiated from the kitchen at which Mr.Cuddles gave an unsatisfied huff as he stomped off towards the doorway into the next room from which delicious aromas continued to permeate the bakery front. He returned just a few seconds later with another human male in tow, positioning him in a cozy sandwich between Vince and himself. From there, the big bear turned into an emotional fuzzball, sniffling and hugging the boy he just recently brought in. Lesley watched in amusement, tearing up a bit himself whilst sticking his fingers in his mouth after shoving them into the pie with the axe still clearly protruding from it. Not expecting to be pulled into the embrace as well, Lesley didn't mind at all as he began to bawl along with the over-sized teddy, burying his face into Mr.Cuddles soft, fluffy fur. Meanwhile, the other two did not seem to be enjoying the hug as much as he was, both obviously trying to comfort the bear in hopes of him loosening his grip, while struggling with each strangled intake of air.

Vincent: "Don't... don't worry about... Inadi..." Vince gasped, tapping the bear's arm rapidly in the hopes that Mr. Cuddles would relent. "We'll... look after... Inadi..."

Luck was on the other men's side, for the blubbering, honey-eating mammal released them, but instead turned his full attention to the comforter, his plan backfiring on him with a bone crushing squeeze. Sounds of snapping wood promptly followed, Lesley's view looking downwards to the floor as chunks of the chair fell to the ground. At last, Vincent was finally let go, body crumpling to the ground in a deflated heap.

Inadi “We lose more furniture that way to be honest.”

"I believe you hun", he responded with a chuckle, watching as Inadi twisted his neck back into its initial place with a confirmative pop. Lesley's gaze stuck to the lad's exposed collar, the action moving in slow motion before his eyes. 'Wow, he's quite... adorable' Lesley couldn't help, but spittle a little bit at the corners of his mouth.

Cuddles returned his attention back to Inadi after incidentally murdering loving on Vince and quickly catching the uneasiness in the boy's look, Lesley eagerly jumped in to save the younger male. Placing a hand on top of Inadi's he gave it a firm squeeze, "Yes, we will take care of your beloved Inadi Mr.Cuddles, I can assure you that." He brought a hand beneath Inadi's chin, his other palm still resting a top the aforementioned, "You can count on it", and he gave him a playful wink before retreating back into his seat to reinitiate into a glomping frenzy of pie and cake.

”...I don’t know.”

Silence took a hold of the conversation, and for a moment Harper didn't know what to say or do. There was an awkward pause, but he decided to soldier on and keep the conversation going. The boy let out a soft chuckle before he gave Leila a smile. "Well, it is a confusing place. I'm not quite sure what to think of it either, if that helps." He paused to take a bite out of his strawberry crepe before continuing, "it's a beautiful place too though. Outside, if you look up, you'll be able to see several constellations, and all at once too." The enthusiasm in his voice became clear and Harper's face lit up with a smile. "There's Orion and Andromeda and Big Dipper, if you ever take a peek outside, you should look. Unfortunately, they're clearer when you're at the station. It's a shame Nowhere is so frightening, yes? If it weren't for things like the chaotic star and being separated from home, I think I could actually, maybe, like it here." The boy admitted before letting out a nervous chuckle.

He didn't know what to think of Leila or the other Lost Souls, but knew that they were in this together. Everyone seemed nice enough, and even Hakuren had his moments, though Harper wasn't too fond of the boy's jokes, especially when things were serious.

"Um. Good day to you guys. I hope you're...um, well rested. And...yeah."

The queen nodded in Ace's direction and raised a glass of sparkly blue liquid and floating stars in the girl's direction. "Good duskdawn to you, dear. Please, please, make yourself at home. I ordered most of this from Two-Thirds and the Cakesmith, just for you! I'll have you know they make the best pastries and tea Nowhere has ever seen." She turned to look at Two-Thirds. The nobody stood stiff behind her throne. "Oh my! What are you doing, standing? You should be seated and eating, Two-Thirds." Her eyebrows creased in annoyance before she smiled brightly and motioned for him to take a seat. "Go on, eat, enjoy yourself, but for Celery's sake, don't overwork yourself, darling." And with that said she gave Ace a nod and returned her attention to Skitz and their conversation on which curtains would work best for a masquerade ball.

Harper gave the tea maker a sympathetic glance before looking to Ace with a wave. "Good morning, the day has been, okay...how are you doing?" He tried to brighten up. After everything that had happened in the town of Yonder, he felt closer to some of the Lost Souls and Ace and Jasper specifically were the closest thing to friends he had at the moment, if they saw him as a friend. It was hard to understand where they all stood in terms of relationships, considering they all had to work together or stay in Nowhere for all eternity? He couldn't comprehend how time worked in Nowhere, if time even existed. However, the thought of being stuck worried him and he poked his crepe with his fork in an attempt to distract himself.

"You should try the chocolate donuts, Ace. Oh, and the chocolate syrup surprise is great too." Harper had showed up early and was the first human at the table, so as a result the Queen made him try almost everything and she was the Queen...so he couldn't refuse. He felt sick for a little while after, but was up for another round after a break. The food was tasty and he made it a point to try and make the best of what he had at the moment. He didn't like Nowhere but after encountering the siren, he made it a point to not let Nowhere rob him of happiness or hope. They were all going to go home.

"Oh by the way Miss Queen, your castle looks nice by the way."

"Thank you, dear. Skitz and I always try to make it lovely! Oh, would you prefer the dark blue curtains with glowing star patterns or the flowing lavender ones?" It was clear she took decorations seriously, and that was one of the reasons she and Martini got along swimmingly. The mermaid's taste in designs and decorations was divine! The Queen motioned for them to eat some more before Jasper slowly made her way to the table. "I'm so happy you could make it, now, if only the others would do the same."

Harper stared at his friend and noticed that the usually hungry Jasper didn't want any of the sweets. How odd...

"Hello Jasper," he greeted kindly, "you should try the strawberry crepes, they're good." and after Harper had gotten her attention, he mouthed the words 'are you okay?'

The Queen finally came to a decision, she would go with the red curtains. She tapped a spoon on the rim of her glass and managed to get everyone's attention. "Humans, thank you for gathering here. I called you over so we could have a nice tea party, but that isn't the only reason. I called you here so we could talk about more important matters and so you could ask me questions. Nowhere is a confusing place and I understand, but so far you're all doing spectacular." She gave them a kind smile before rummaging through the quest bag she had them bring along. The queen pulled out two bottles, the first one filled with the now white essence of what once was a chaotic star and the other with musical notes that bounced around inside.

"So far, you have two out of ten items. You've been making good progress, but there's still a long way to go. I heard from the guides about your unfortunate run in with a few criminals. They'll try to make sure it doesn't happen again, but you will all have to be extra careful. Do any of you have questions? If you do, now is the time to ask."

The Cake Shop

"Oh Vincent! Thank you for offering to look after him." The bear finally released his hold on the kind and altruistic man. "I'm sorry about the chair! But thank you." He lifted Vincent up by his hoodie and placed him gently on the couch. Riley laughed at the state Vinny was in, Mr. Cuddles was such an interesting and adorable Nobody! "Also, don't worry about me! I'll do my best and win Ms. Panda's heart!" The eight foot grizzly bear, was pumped and he began stuffing Vincent's and everyone else's bags with an assortment of chocolates and pastries. This batch was full of lovable humans! He liked them very much.

"Lesley! Thank you, I leave him in your hands." Mr. Cuddles gave the pink haired man a pat on the head, but the weight of his paws almost made it seem like a hit, poor Lesley. "All of you are so kind!" Comical tears began streaming from the giant grizzly's eyes and in a fit of emotions he tore Inadi away from Lesley and placed both paws on his assistant's shoulders.

The bear stared deep into his assistant's eyes. "Inadi, there comes a time when a man must leave home! I knew this day would come and I am so proud! One day you'll find someone perfect for you and that person will be the peanut butter to your jelly and you'll want to spend forever with them...life is a journey and I-I can't believe you're growing up so fast." He gave the boy on last, quick hug before wiping away at a tear and looking at Riley. "Watch over these sweet boys."

Riley gave the bear a salute. "You betcha, Mr. Cuddles. I'll make sure they all stay safe...wait stop! Stop!" Before she knew it she was lifted off her feet and given one of the bear's famous, spinning hugs. Riley groaned, her soul being thrown out of her body. "I-I love you too." She squeaked as the bear placed her back on solid ground. If they stayed here any longer...they would die. How was Inadi still alive?

Ding Ding

Mr. Cuddles' ears began twitching and he stood up straight and composed himself. "Oh! That must be Stephen, err, Froggy." He dusted himself off and made his way towards the door. "I'll really miss you, do come to visit okay?"

"Promise, we'll even drag the others along next time." She gave the bear a reassuring grin and he mustered the courage to open the door.

"Long time no see Mr. Cuddles! Are the humans here? I got a call from the Queen, she told me to pick them up." The young and cheerful nobody stuck his head through the door and when his eyes landed on the humans he beamed and gave them a cheery wave. "There you guys are! Nice to meet you. You can all call me Froggy!"

Mr. Cuddles laughed. "How's the job, I heard you almost lost two humans and got the Queen upset?"

The nobody blushed several shades of red. "Leon, Ace and I were not lost! I was just giving them the grand tour, y'know?" He puffed out his chest in an attempt to disregard the blow to his pride. "Well, it's good to meet cha! Humans, let's go before I forget the way to the Queen's castle, haha."

"You heard the guide. C'mon Lesley, Vinvin, Inadi! We've got places to see and people to meet!" Riley gave Mr. Cuddles a quick good bye hug then pretty much rocketed out the door to join Stephen. Introductions took place before the guide led them through Nowhere's colorful and bustling town square. Nobodies would stop to stare at times, and some of the friendlier ones would greet the humans.

"Humans! Hey, nice to see you! Send our regards to the Queen."

Froggy kept some of the more nosy nobodies at a distance and plowed through crowded streets with head raised his and fists clenched in determination. Eventually, they passed the square and city gates, approaching a pristine castle of white perched upon a beanstalk. The humans and their guide eventually reached said beanstalk and Stephen gave it a hard knock. Upon knocking a window appeared and a fox in a bellboy suit stuck out his head.

"No ID, no entry. Those are the rules, pal."

Stephen stopped in his tracks and began rummaging through his messenger bag for an ID. "Here ya go, Scotty!" He held out the ID only for the fox to make a face.

"Froggy...your ID is expired." He held out a bowl of star tarts. "Hey humans...you better help yourselves. I'll need to give the Queen a quick call." The animal hopped off his chair and made his way to a phone in his little office inside the beanstalk. He mentioned something about humans and a certain guide's expired ID before ending the call and hitting a red button. "Coast is clear, you're lucky the queen has been expecting you." A door at the base of the beanstalk opened and the guide ushered the humans into the elevator.

He looked at the buttons and smacked the up arrow with his hand. "You might wanna hold on tight."

Before Riley could ask why the elevator rocketed upwards at an astounding speed and the humans found their feet leaving the ground. The girl let out an excited squeal before she reached out for Froggy's hand, the guide having anchored himself to the railing. This continued for a few moments before the elevator halted to a stop and the humans who were in midair fell to the floor with a thud. The doors opened, revealing miles and miles of clouds.

The Queen's castle stood just a few miles away. "Well, we better start walking!"

Meanwhile in Sol...

"The Bakery is on fire and king Thaddeus is still at a peace meeting in Aven!"

"Prince Tobias, what if they come back? What will we do? Our walls have been torn down and our soldiers are weary."

Merchants and villagers gathered in the throne room, even the baker with his burnt hat and torn apron was there. Loud muttering and stifled sobs echoed throughout the castle and prince Tobias stood at the center of it all looking terrified. "U-Um, can we barricade the walls?"

"The dragons can fly, prince." One of the soldiers muttered with a salute.

"Can we barricade ourselves in the castle and wait for dad--er, the king?" He winced as the crowd inched closer.

"We need to defend the city and the castle isn't big enough to hold everyone." Another guard stated with a huff. "In the king's absence, you are in charge, prince Tobias. What do you suggest we do?"

He stiffened in place, eyes flitting from person to person. They trusted him! To be honest though, it terrified him. If he messed up...no, no. "I think we may need backup. Our soldiers are tired because of the war with Aven. The king is there trying to talk things out, but a ceasefire hasn't been declared yet and we're low on both soldiers and supplies." The crowd pushed closer and he let out a squeak.

From within a crowd, a voice piped up above all the mumblings of the anxious crowd.

"Back up, you all! You're going to trample our darling prince and then what are we going to do?"

Somehow the owner of the voice managed to squeeze through the crowd, shoving people out of her way before finally popping out besides the prince.

"What a crowd, eh?" The girl laughed, adjusting her feathered cap plopped on top of blond curls. She was clad in the uniform of the royal messengers, and after giving a hearty greeting to the prince she turned to frown at the soldiers. She drew herself up to her full height (which really wasn't much), hands crossed across her chest as she huffed. "How about giving princey a little room to breathe here?" Although she was hardly an imposing figure, the soldiers quicly took notice of the royal messenger. "How pleased do you think the king would be to come back to see footprints all over his son because you guys weren't doing your job?"

With rather sheepish faces the soldiers quickly formed a sort of barrier around the prince, pushing back the crowd enough so the poor boy could finally get some breathing space.

With a satisfied nod, she turned back to her friend with a grin. "Really, Tobias, you're the prince! Can't have people pushing you around, you've gotta take charge sometimes alright?" She gave him a little nudge. "Anyways, did you send for me?"

Before he could be squished a familiar voice echoed throughout the throne room and the prince brightened up.

He could always trust Zephy to get him out of a sticky situation! From between a couple of villagers he waved and in a flash she squeezed through the crowd and wound up beside him. Tobias huffed before straightening up and giving her a very grateful look.

With a comment from the royal messenger, the guards backed up and so did the people. The prince chuckled nervously, "haha, I'll try harder, promise." He gave her a thankful pat on the shoulder before clearing his throat. Now that the guards had formed a sort of barricade around them, he felt less intimidated. "Oh, yes! Thank you for coming and at the right moment too." He looked at the crowd. "Beloved citizens of Sol, we promise to solve this dragon problem soon. Dad will be away for some time, but we can't take much more of the dragons. As you know, we're short on pretty much everything." The citizens gasped and he ducked behind the messenger, who sighed and nudged him back out in front with a reassuring whisper.

"Prince...there's a thing called witholding information." One of the guards commented with a chuckle.

"I was being honest!" He muttered before nodding at Zephy and resuming his little speech. "Well, that's the truth and so we'll be asking for reinforcements from Nowhere's queen. Trust me, we'll solve this dragon problem. Your safety is of utmost importance."

The crowd didn't look very convinced but when all was said and done the guards escorted them out, leaving the prince and messenger in the throne room.

"Oh, before I forget. I called you here to ask a favor. I need you to deliver a message to the queen." Tobias frowned. "You see, she hasn't exactly agreed to sending us reinforcements. In fact, she doesn't know about the dragon problem yet, so I wrote a request letter and you're the best person for the job, Zephy." He gave her a grin. "I can't ask anyone else."

"Gosh, you're making me blush." Zephy laughed, accepting the letter and tucking it securely in her messenger bag before giving a small salute. "I've never failed a delivery and I certainly won't fail this one, even if the dragons came after me themselves! So don't you worry now," She reached up on tiptoes and gave the prince a pat on the head. "I'm not said to be the fastest messenger in Sol for nothing. I'll be back with reinforcement before you know it; you just make sure to keep this place standing until I get back, you hear?"

The royal messenger hopped back a few steps cheerfully, waving the the blue haired prince before turning on her heels and bolting out of the throne room, her smile replaced with a determined grin. Despite her nonchalant demeanor she fully understood the severity of the situation. There was no doubt that if the dragons weren't stopped they would turn to the castle soon, and with their current state there was no way Sol could hold them back.

"Let's see if you can beat your record, Zephy," she mumbled to herself, quickly veering onto the forest path that led out of her kingdom. Be it flying boar hordes or slime troupes, nothing was going to stop her from delivering this message to the Queen.

~~~(Woo, banner~)
Ace gave a visible sigh when the Queen accepted her attempt of formalities. It was harder than it looked. Thankfully, she was given the okay to be calm and relaxed. Ace stuffed her mouth with another pastry as Harper spoke. "Morm-" She put her index finger up, indicating that he'd hold in. Talking with your mouth full is rude.' Ace reminded herself and finished eating before she responded. Being with the queen was much different than Beijing with her friends- well, she considered them friends.
"Good mornin' to ya. I'm pretty good. Hehe, I walked around the castle a few times... Although I don't think I was suppose to. Guards kept escorting me back. I don't think the nurses were too happy either. They kept trying to get me to stay in the room- but it was booooring in there!"
Ace didn't hesitate to try the pastries Harper pointed out. Which in hindsight was probably a bad idea on his part... Ace was hyperactive enough. But she never got to experience what a sugar rush was and that moment was probably it. "I've never had any of this stuff before, it looks- no it tastes really good!" There was a slight pause as Ace looked at Harper. With a smile she spoke, "Cheer up will ya? Things coulda took turns for the worst you know, and we could be dead." Ace continued on her taste testing everything. She was having a moment of delight, but promptly stopped in order to greet her other friend- again, if they considered her as a friend- Jasper.
"Welcome back to the land of the living Jasper!" The red head laughed and fixed the plain red shirt she had on. "You should try all the food here. It's really good." Even though she didn't see Harper's silent questioning, Ace still picked up on the unhappiness. "You look sad too." The girl had been with those two long enough to catch on to their unhappiness. "Cheer up Jasper! It could be worse. I was just telling Harper the same thing. We'll get through the next task, easy peasy. But we can't do that if you don't have a little optimism."
After her little rant, almost as if she never spoke, Ace turned her attention back to the candle near her. Curiously, she used a fork and picked up a random pastry she didn't too much care for, then set it over the fire. "Cool." Ace watched as the food burned slowly. "You know... I wonder where else everyone is."
If you may recall, Songbird made a promise to himself that, after the quest for the Siren’s Song, he’d tell the Queen adios and go back to his old (and only) job.
Yeah, that was five seconds before he saw her puppy face.
Goshdarnit.
He kicked a pebble away and watched it bounce off the ground. Ugh, why was he so… Well, I don’t know, wimpy? A big fat example of this character trait was oh, how about the fact that he practically retrieves items from other nobodies for free because well, “Song, I can’t pay you back, but I really really need that stuff!”. The sign for “I’m a doormat” was flashing a manic red in the recesses of the item hunter’s mind, and he did not like it one bit.
But of course, being sulky wasn’t going to help him any, nope. The thing was, if he wanted to change, he’d have to start sooner and later, and what better time to start than today! Yeah, that was it, no more saying “yes” to other nobodies! Songbird was free, baby, and he’d do whatever darn well he pleases!
A boomerang hit him. “Oh, Songbird! I’m sorry! Can you throw that back?” One of the Queen’s many servants were probably playing around during their break time, and did not foresee the future wherein they might hit another nobody with their stupid toy. Songbird frowned. He wasn’t going to oblige such insensitive creatures!
“Thanks, Song! You’re the best!” Aforementioned servants clapped their hands and ran away, both waving gleefully while one of them held the boomerang against his chest. “Oh yeah, aren’t you waiting for the new hommuns? They’re there already!” Boomerang Boy and his partner Boomerang Girl pointed at the faraway elevator, and the white-haired nobody plucked a telescope from within the folds of his overcoat and gave their claim a peek.
Well.
Change would have to wait.
Songbird sighed and headed for the new group. He wasn’t situated by the castle, more like halfway to it, because he felt uncomfortable in such a fancy place. That was why he was the ideal nobody to pick the second batch of humans up, they said. That was alsy why, they said, he should do it! And he did.
Ugh. Stop being a pushover, Song!
Meh, he finally reached them. This new group seemed… Er… Well. Anyway, at least they didn’t seem to have a psychotic knife-wielder, just a girl…(?) with bright pink hair that made his eyes really, really hurt. On second thought, maybe this color was worse than Mado’s crazy tendencies…. He squinted and stared at everyone briefly, then gave Froggy a small smile. “Thanks for sending them in, Froggy. Let’s go on this path, shall we? Don’t poke the plants please, and don’t eat the vines, no matter how lush they look. Just don’t,” He waved his hand dismissively and gestured for the group to follow him. “By the way, I’m Songbird.”
Not that any of you are interested.
Songbird’s couldn’t have been more right in his estimation. At least, when it came to Vincent.
Vincent could not care less about their new guide’s arrival, marvelled as he still was by their surroundings and in the process of recovering from Mr. Cuddles’ farewell embrace. He would stretch his body this way and that, straining and stretching out his muscles before swinging his arms around and lifting up his legs, bending them at the knee to make sure nothing was broken. As painful as his body felt, that sensation was quickly fading away… and Vincent couldn’t believe that his body was actually starting to almost feel better? If Mr. Cuddles didn’t own a thriving business as Nowhere’s premier baker, then he had a possible career as a masseur, for certain. Perhaps he would strike lucky with Mrs. Panda if he was to give her a back rub and shoulder massage? Perhaps.
It was only ten minutes into the walk, following with a longing groan behind the group’s defacto leader Riley (Vincent normally would never follow anyone, however getting to know Riley in the way he had since whenever they entered Nowhere, he was willing to do so, if only to avoid arguing with her ever again), that he noticed they were even walking throughout Nowhere’s streets, towards a grand and magnificent castle under the guideship of a green haired teen named Froggy. Vincent took a deep breath, ignoring his companions conversation as he stared around him.
How long had it been since he was whisked away from that train station and landed smackdab in the middle of… well, wherever the hell this place was? How long had it been since he met Riley, a girl he still didn’t know how to decide his mind about, and that pink curled chick Lesley, who was outgoing and mischievous in a way that Vincent could appreciate in a woman but also carried with her something… off? How long had it been since he arrived in this world of cute and whimsical fantasy that was not a place he would ever dream to call home? How long since that tasty misadventure on the lollipop farm, and the resulting chase from those diminutive little soldiers? How long since-
Vincent had almost ploughed straight into the back of Lesley when the group stopped behind Froggy at the I.D. Check. Vincent caught himself and backed away just in time, looking away with a blushing, nonchalant whistle as the doors then opened for them to board an elevator up.
"You might wanna hold on tight." Froggy said, and before Vincent could respond gravity ceased to be and he was rocketed up into the sky at a frightening pace. Gritting his teeth together, Vincent could only mutter vulgar obscenities as his body became lifted off the ground. And then, at the elevators’ peak, his body collapsed, smacking down onto the ground with a painful thud and wheeze.
“Motherfu-”
DING
The elevator doors slid open, to reveal a neverending expanse of clouds, clouds and more clouds, as far as the eye could see. There, in the distance, was the Queen’s Castle, and Froggy’s next words made Vincent want to rush to his feet and start strangling the poor Nobody. More walking? Was he serious?!
“This is so… BORING!” Vincent screamed halfway on their walk, his shoulders sagging after his shout. In a short space of time, or perhaps a long space of time, or whatever the accurate term might be, they were greeted by the arrival of another Nobody. One who looked even weirder then the green haired twerp.
Thanks for sending them in, Froggy. Let’s go on this path, shall we? Don’t poke the plants please, and don’t eat the vines, no matter how lush they look. Just don’t.” The Nobody advised somewhat sternly. “By the way, I’m Songbird.”
Vincent, however, grabbed onto a smatter of vines and began to pull, hopefully ripping some off, just for the sake of it.
“Why is there so much walking?! Don’t you guys have any buses or trams or something?!” He yelled.
The bouquet of candied flowers looked so delicate, the inflated sugars portrayed a fragility alike to glass when one sat and observed from afar. She could reach out right now and take one, but her stomach had already decided it didn't want anything and Jasper did not dare disobey, for the consequences maybe even greater than her newly acquired urge to take and eat a single sugary lolly.
"Hello Jasper, you should try the strawberry crepes, they're good."
He was such a good boy and Jasper liked him a lot. If it weren't for Harper, she would have long gone into the pit of insanity. The lad had a way about him that calmed people, a trait she warmed up to rather quickly during every quest.
'Are you okay?', his mouth formed the words soundlessly and it almost made her melt. 'Gosh. Why is he so nice?', Jasper thought to herself as she nodded quietly in response, but placed a strawberry crepe on her once empty plate just to make him feel at ease and somewhat convinced.
"Cheer up Jasper! It could be worse. I was just telling Harper the same thing. We'll get through the next task, easy peasy. But we can't do that if you don't have a little optimism." As usual, Ace was as cheery as ever. Not fully grasping the severity of the situation and Jasper couldn't blame her. The girl had yet to see people die during these travels, but she was definitely not counting on anymore more of them dying.
"You know... I wonder where else everyone is." Jasper wondered the same thing.
"Humans, thank you for gathering here. I called you over so we could have a nice tea party, but that isn't the only reason. I called you here so we could talk about more important matters and so you could ask me questions. Nowhere is a confusing place and I understand, but so far you're all doing spectacular." The Queen began her speech, but paused shortly to retrieve a pair of vials with which their collected items were stored in the form liquid that seemed to represent the name. The Siren's Song was a substance composed of musical notes and the snow hued liquid must be the Chaotic Star.
" Do any of you have questions? If you do, now is the time to ask."
That statement caught her attention quickly, mind flashing back to the attackers. "Our guides knew those criminals. Who are they?" She blurted.
Right as Inadi was thinking things couldn't get any worse, suddenly the man known as Lesley was a breath away from him and seemed to be inching closer. Inadi grew stiffer than any chair he had sat in, and pole he had leaned against. Staring back into the other man's eyes, the pessimist felt his glasses fog up due to the heavy and hearty breath that Lesley let go past his lips. Good thing too. Had Lesley seen just how wide Inadi's pupils became from that point on, it would rival that of a small black hole. His face locked into a complete shock as if it were chiseled out in stone. Unable to say anything or move, he was completely unsure of how to combat this problem. Right as the boy was nearly about to lose his senses, Lesley left and began walking elsewhere. Where that was, Inadi wasn't sure. To be completely fair, he also didn't care.
If he could have, Inadi would have fainted on the spot. However, there was the eight foot bear that still occupied the room and controlled a good portion of the mood in the room. Then again, an eight foot bear would control any room he walked into. Inadi's glasses eventually lost the fog that covered them and he stared up at his “mentor” of sorts. Here was this giant, top hat wearing grizzly giving him some kind of speech a father gives a son after being accepted into college. He had known Mr. Cuddles all of maybe more than a week and he had grown attached to him this deeply? Maybe his love for this Panda woman he mentioned all started the day before he arrived.
Inadi would have chuckled at the thought but was cut off from his own thoughts as he felt his spine give way again. WHY?! That was the only question that rang in his head as he felt his organs squeezing against his chest. What could he possibly have done to deserve this kind of treatment? Got on a train at midnight? Was that really so bad as to earn the literal definition of a bear hug every hour of every day since he arrived in this horrible spin off of a Lewis Carrol book? He silently prayed that this Froggy person would stop being late and just arrive at the door. What a terrible day for tardiness...
Once Inadi finally was let go, nothing stopped him from falling this time. He silently rolled into a fetal position and felt himself sink into the wooden floor underneath him. Staring back up from his salvation, he saw as Riley, the poor girl, finally got a taste of the horrible torture that had crushed them all at some point in this prison with sweets. He hated to admit it, but he secretly reveled in the sight of others suffering the hugs as well. If he would suffer, he would not do so alone.
The door bell finally rang. At last he would be free to escape to some new place. As he slowly picked himself off the ground he overheard that the guide was a bit of a klutz when it came to directions. A terrific trait to hear when it came to introducing a guide. As everyone left, Inadi felt a deep pang in his chest walking towards the doorway. He still wasn't sure what was going to happen when they arrived at the Queen's castle. Worse yet, he didn't know what the Queen would have wanted. He stopped at the doorway and seemed to stand still in time as everyone continued down the path to the Queen. Steps could be heard behind him. If he wasn't sure who was behind him, the fur that tickled his arm made it clear.
“You're scared to leave aren't you? I can tell by how still you are to be honest.” Mr. Cuddles said as he placed a soft paw on the boy's shoulder. Inadi smiled and gave a chuckle. It was his Achilles' Heel. Doing something he wasn't used to. Doing something he wasn't sure what the end result would be. He hated that fear of being unsure. With the bake shop even, he was almost sick to the core not being able to make any kind of real schedule out. Everything was new for him. And just as he was starting to feel comfortable and in control, here he was about to be thrown into a whole new place.
Inadi took a step out of the doorway. It was a tough step, but he needed to take it so he could turn and stare back at the bear. In his own world, working for a bear at a sweets shop would hardly count as being normal. Here though, it seemed about as normal as anything would get. As safe as anything could be. “I know you want me to go with them to be with my own kind. That much I know Mr. Cuddles, but why so soon. Can't I just stay a little longer? And you still haven't told me what it is the Queen will have me do. Why all the secrets?” Inadi asked as he felt that deep pang in his chest again. Staring down at the ground he felt a much lighter hug envelope him.
The bear placed his hands on the boy's shoulders again, letting the hug go and staring down at him. “Because you've been so caught up in your ways that you don't take risks. Hardly a way to succeed at anything. Even I take risks making new recipes. You need to be able to accept new things and people in your life.” The bear said as he saw Inadi drop his face away from eye contact. His head hung hard but the bear knew he was still listening. “Only then you'll be able to enjoy life as it is meant to be.”
Inadi picked his head up after a few seconds of keeping it hung. No words were exchanged, as the water in the young man's eyes was all that needed to be seen. Another quick hug was exchanged and Inadi quickly began running after the other people in his group. Finally able to catch up with them he entered the castle with the others and began catching his breath. Right as began thinking it was time to relax, the elevator suddenly shot up and Inadi felt himself almost become weightless. The feeling would have been incredible if he wasn't short a few breaths of oxygen. As the elevator finally came to a stop Inadi landed face first into the floor. Picking his head up he immediately went to check his glasses and luckily only found them crooked as they usually were. Letting out a sigh of relief, the boy crawled out of the elevator in fear that his legs wouldn't work.
Eventually he found himself back on his feet and looked over at the man named Vince. They were just told to not touch any of the vines or plants and here he was ripping out vines by the hand full. Then the whining about the walking. Inadi let out a sigh as he pushed his glasses up on his face and turned towards Riley. “You would honestly think that he would have a bit more respect being in the house of royalty.” He scoffed. Plus, what if those vines were poisonous or some kind of creature. They wouldn't know. This was a weird place as it was. As the questions began getting asked, he was unsure if he should bring anything up. He had no idea what he was going to be doing for the Queen, but then again maybe someone else would be a bit more brave than he was to actually ask the ruler of this land a question. He could wait his turn....that may or may not ever arrive.
"Lesley! Thank you, I leave him in your hands." And the robust bear smacked him across the back, an act he wasn't expecting at all. The wind was knocked out of him, chunks of pie from his mouth flying onto the table along with the escape of his breath. He coughed a bit, clutching his chest in pain. Mr.Cuddles seriously had no idea about how strong he actually was. From hugging to a pat on the back, everything was multiplied by five in terms of applied force. Sadly, Lesley's plan to keep the grizzly's attention from Inadi had plummeted because he was now giving the frame-faced boy "the talk". Feeling the need to show affection to all of them, he even gave the poor girl, Riley, a squeeze as well, who ended up looking just as oxygen stripped as they had been.
Finally, the anticipated 'ding' rang from the bakery entrance, signalling the owner that another customer had arrived. Looking up after catching his breathing pattern again, another cute boy appeared. He had hair the color of a paled turquoise and eyes of baby blue. Waving at them enthusiastically, the male introduced himself as their designated retriever, Froggy.
Riley:"You heard the guide. C'mon Lesley, Vinvin, Inadi! We've got places to see and people to meet!"
Lesley jumped up in excitement, gathering the rest of the cake and the pie in a bento box that Cuddles had left on the table and hurried to follow in Riley's lead out the door. From there, the green-headed Nobody ushered the group through busy streets of what looked to be a town square. It reminded him of flea markets back on earth. Bargaining between seller and buyer could be heard from various stands selling knick-knacks he'd never seen before, some of which he did not intend on finding out. They moved along rather hurriedly and eventually arrived at the base of what looked to be an enormous beanstalk. Lesley had no clue if Nowhere was anything like earth, but giant beanstalks usually meant magic beans, gold-egg-laying-geese, and last but not least, giants!
Upon knocking on the enlarged shoot, an opening slid up to reveal an adorable fox in a charming bell boy get up. He was the most precious little thing. Lesley couldn't help, but oogle over the petite creature, fighting the urge to reach out and yank its cheeks until they became sore. Froggy presented a piece of identification which was declared overdue, therefore the animal offered them some more sweets before leaving for confirmation to allow there passage. Not able to reject the calling of more candy, the rose-haired male grabbed a handful and stuffed it into his mouth. They were sweet and melted into flavors he could not describe. Once the scavenger returned, a larger entryway into the stalk opened and they were all lead inside.
Froggy:"You might wanna hold on tight."
Without security of his palms grasping the vine railings, the machine shot up in a gravity defying motion, sending his entirety floating off the elevator flooring. His rose colored locks floating in uncontrollable motions, it would not come as a surprise if someone got some in their mouth by accident. The first syllables of a swear could be heard, but was simultaneously cut off by a ding that meant they had reached their destination. The ride ended in a matter of seconds, then life's natural force came crashing down, yanking the humans with it. Landing in a mangled heap of his long hair and extensive legs, it took a bit to untangle himself, but eventually he got up and skipped towards his group who had already gotten a head start. Another quirky Nobody joined them who had been waiting by the elevator upon their arrival to the stalk's peak.
Songbird:“Thanks for sending them in, Froggy. Let’s go on this path, shall we? Don’t poke the plants please, and don’t eat the vines, no matter how lush they look. Just don’t. By the way, I’m Songbird.”
Everyone in Nowhere seemed to have such quaint names. It almost prompted him to make a fancy nickname for himself while he stayed there. Right when he was about to ask the heavily dressed, feathered man to sing them a song, Vincent went into a sort of impatient spasm as he wrapped his hands around nearby plantation and began tugging on them with visible intent on dismembering it from where they had sprouted.
“You would honestly think that he would have a bit more respect being in the house of royalty” Inadi ridiculed in a touchy tone.
Vince: “Why is there so much walking?! Don’t you guys have any buses or trams or something?!” The angry one burst out in frustration. Lesley placed a hand onto Vince's back. "Hun, I think you have legs for a reason and if you look around, you don't see any do you? I think if they did have one, then we would have hopped on it ages ago. Trust me, I don't mind riding my way there either," he sympathized as he rubbed the lad's back in circular motions of comfort, "If you want, I could give you a piggyback ride?" Lesley winked jokingly then chuckled a bit to himself, using a hand to cover his mouth as he walked faster ahead of the hooded fellow, knowing the kid was not in a state to be messed around with.
The pulpy noise of flora being torn from fiber to fiber and the screechy whining that could only belong to one of the new arrivals made Songbird’s ‘evil eye’ twitch. Two things struck him all at once; the first that he was now reacting exactly like Brandy would, the second that wow, the group had already annoyed him within five seconds! What a record breaker! He sighed and flicked his finger up to tip his hat a few inches upward, therefore exposing his heterochromia, then turned around casually as if one of the new humans didn’t just do something that could very well burst all of his stress receptors. “Please refrain from emulating what your charming companion has just recently done,” He shot a sore glare at Vincent, then continued,” You’ll see why in a few seconds.”
It wasn’t an empty threat, really. A vine shot out from beside the ones Vincent had ripped, and this one grew fangs as it descended, face to face with the human who maliciously exterminated some of its kin. After splattering a good amount of saliva/resin on Vincent’s face by means of a mighty roar, said vine picked him up by the hood and slung him towards the castle much like a baseball player making his first pitch.
Songbird watched as the human became a tiny spot on the horizon before turning back to the group minus one. “Now, please wait patiently for the minibus,” He muttered, and even before he finished his admonishment a minibus covered in vines (it looked to be made out of wood, too) floated up. Well, get in everyone.
Meanwhile, Vincent landed in a squishy marshmallow platform just as the vine bus pulled into the depot. “Ya did somethin’ to da vines, now did ya? Hommuns, ya lot just kenna keep yo hanchs to yaself,” A weathered old beaver wearing the crisp blue uniform of a station attendant sized him up and huffed in exasperation before climbing up the podium. Looks like Mr. Beaver had seen his fair share of rebels in the past, all of whom ended with their butts burrowing deep and leaving yet another (unflattering) impression on the landing square. With a hiss of steam, the minibus rolled and jerked to a stop, and steam hissed from out the overhead machinery as the machine doors open.
Songbird waited for the vehicle to stop completely before stepping off and coaxing the humans to follow suit. “The engine seems to be in good shape today, Twigs,” He addressed the elderly beaver politely, and the creature grinned toothily before thumping his tail in Vincent’s general direction. “Take it dat one’s wich ya too, eh?” He snorted, and the item hunter nodded before he even saw who they were talking about.
“Well, Mr. Grieves, how nice of you to join us. Fancy the sky’s much bluer when you’re sailing through it,” Songbird’s tone was dripping with the sarcasm that none of the other guides dared to talk with. Then again, the dude pissed him off within the first few seconds of their meeting, so he could kiss good conduct hasta la vista, baby.
A-anyway.
Figuring that he could reflect any sort of barb Vincent freaking Vine Puller Rule Violator Sky Sailor Grieves could throw him, Songbird faced the other humans and scanned the clipboard he held for their names. “Lesley Labelle, Inadi Sihma, Riley Grayson. It’s nice to meet you. We are within the lower level of Her Majesty Queen Delirium’s castle. This is the depot which houses incoming courier minibuses and other small aircraft. We’ll take the lift to the right and arrive directly on the floor where the grand hall is located, where the Queen is waiting along with the other humans.” He paused thoughtfully, then hugged the clipboard to his chest and tucked his chin downward in what seemed to be a very shy manner. “I hope you all get along with each other.”
“In any case, let us be off!” Songbird cleared his throat awkwardly, pushed both his bashful tendencies aside and then shepherded the humans (yes, even Vincent) to the spacious lift where they began the ascent to meet the Queen.
Two-Thirds looked up from his neat rows of tea ingredients upon being called to attention by the queen. Immediately, his lips is spreading into another pleasant smile and voice finding a polite refusal for her kindness. All was abruptly stopped when his eyes fall on the small crease of annoyance between her brows. The smile took a little effort to maintain, and his voice found something else entirely, "Thank you for your kindness," The nobody thanked the queen. Despite his words, Two-Thirds finished the blend in his hands with two dried gummy flowers and handed the tea pot to Skitz and took a seat across from Leila and Harper.
He nodded a greeting towards the humans and helped himself to a piece of shortcake. Barely halfway through his cake, Two-Thirds looked up to find another human joining the party. She looked more than willing to finish the platter of short cakes, including Two-Third's half a cake. However, it quickly revealed that her actual target was the brownies. "Good day," He greeted.
The nobody continued to make his way through the rest of his cake in a leisurely pace, now that his cake is not in immediate danger. After he was finished with the cake, Two-Thirds helped himself a crepe that he overheard Harper recommended while keeping attention on the Queen's words.
"Do any of you have questions? If you do, now is the time to ask."
Queen is offering humans an opportunity for questions. Of course, Two-Thirds has no place in this particular conversation, so he fed himself a piece of neatly cut crepe.
"Our guides knew those criminals. Who are they?"
That was when the nobody almost choked on the piece of food. He took a prompt sip of tea.
Why yes, maybe some berries in this would be great.
"Cheer up will ya? Things coulda took turns for the worst you know, and we could be dead."
They could have sunk like rocks. They could have been sleeping with the fishes now. Those weren't exactly things he wanted to be reminded about, but Ace had a point, they were alive and they still had a chance to go home. "You're right, thank you for the reminder, Ace." He passed her a plate of the sundae surprise and smiled. "We're still alive so we can still go home." He needed that little pep talk and he was thankful. Harper turned to look at Leila, she looked as if she were lost in her own world and didn't bother to reply. He was stuck with such an odd bunch of people but they only had each other. They had to be there for one another and understand each other.
"Cheer up Jasper! It could be worse. I was just telling Harper the same thing. We'll get through the next task, easy peasy. But we can't do that if you don't have a little optimism."
Harper stared at Ace with wide eyes, she didn't seem worried at all. It was amazing how she remained so chipper and it put him at ease. Maybe things were going to be alright after all. He nodded his head up and down, a smile tugging on the corner's of his mouth. "Yeah, before you know it we'll be home." With them...with them he could be brave. He was snapped out of his thoughts when Ace asked about the others. "Oh, I think Hakuren and Leon were at the infirmary. I haven't seen Mado around though." He winced as possible thoughts of what she was doing crossed his mind. Hopefully, it didn't involve skewering bunny soldiers.
He was snapped out of his rather unpleasant thoughts when Two-Thirds sat nearby. "Thank you for the tea, it's delicious." He muttered with a small smile. He then passed one of the ice cream trays in Two-Third's direction and motioned for the Nobody to have a taste. He appreciated everything the guides were doing for them, he really, really did.
Then the queen waited for questions. Harper had a million, but kept his eyes on his plate.
"Our guides knew those criminals. Who are they?" Jasper had asked one of the questions in his head.
The queen gave the humans a gentle smile. "I would be grand if the others decided to join us. I'm sure you all have plenty of questions and that is a very good one." She raised a glass of sparkly stars before taking a sip. "It's a sad story..." she whispered, her expression suddenly turning sad. It was the first time they saw the queen without a smile on her face. "They were like you once and we loved them. We worked side by side with them, we helped them and they helped us."
"So they went on quests too?" Harper asked hesitantly. Maybe he didn't want to know more, maybe ignorance was best.
The queen let out a sad laugh. "Yes, they were just like you...but they went mad."
He froze. If they didn't finish that list soon there was a possibility they'd end up just like them. "Oh...my God." The news began sinking in and he swallowed hard. Those cloaked figures were human, were on the same quest they were on. Was that why they wanted the living list? So they could go home? He felt bad for them but also frightened. "That's why they wanted our list." He mumbled. "Isn't it?"
"Maybe...but their time is up. Their cycle is over." She focused her eyes on the humans. "Promise me you'll keep the list safe. I don't want the same thing to happen all over again. Whatever you do, don't trust them. The queen looked so sad and Harper he was as pale as a sheet.
He cleared his throat. "Y-Yes your highness."
"Oh my gosh...this place, this place is beautiful." Riley stared at the castle with a goofy grin before she leaped forward. "The clouds are incredibly soft too. God, nowhere is amazing." The girl spun around to grin at her companions before walking on ahead.
Froggy laughed a little. "I'm glad you like it, the inside is much more impressive, promise."
He motioned for the others to follow only to have the blonde man complain. “Why is there so much walking?! Don’t you guys have any buses or trams or something?!” He was yelling too and it made Froggy flinch. This was his first cycle as a guide and both Leon and Ace were nice enough, so dealing with people like Vince was new. The guide gave the man a hesitant smile and raised his hands defensively. "We need to wait a bit," last he remembered Skitz said that Song would come with a minibus, but he wasn't too sure at the moment.
Thankfully the pink haired human began chiding the blonde man and Froggy gave Lesley a thankful nod and a smile.
“Thanks for sending them in, Froggy. Let’s go on this path, shall we? Don’t poke the plants please, and don’t eat the vines, no matter how lush they look. Just don’t, by the way, I’m Songbird.”
Froggy spun around only to see the item hunter. He gave songbird a smile. "It's no problem, Songbird. Thank you for sending the directions to the castle through star mail. If not for that, I would have gotten all of us lost." The guide chuckled then introduced the humans one by one.
"Nice to meet you, I like your scarf by the way." Riley greeted casually and with a bright and toothy smile. "The hat too, you Nobodies sure know how to dress snazzy. Even Mr. Cuddles had a great taste in hats." Songbird told them about the rules and she nodded, Vinny however had other plans and decided to break the rules the moment they had been mentioned. Urghh, it was the lollipop farm incident all over again.
“You would honestly think that he would have a bit more respect being in the house of royalty.”
"Mhm, tell me about it." She rolled her eyes at Vincent before letting out a soft laugh. "You probably won't believe me, but we almost got arrested the day we arrived because of him. He tried to rob a lollipop farm...it was a heck of a day. Kind of fun though, we got to play cops and robbers with a bunch of adorable but grouchy little rabbits--oh wow." Out of nowhere a live vine monster picked Vincent up and chucked him all the way to the castle. It was amazing.
A minibus also arrived and Song told them to get inside. Riley gave Inadi an excited grin. "Oh wow! Let's go."
Froggy on the other hand waited for everyone to get in before he did too. The ride to the castle was a smooth one and when they got there both Vince and a bunch of bunny guards were waiting. There was also a candy cane in a tuxedo.
"Songbird, Froggy! Good to see you lads. The Queen is waiting for you already with the best cake and tea Nowhere has to offer." He gave them a little bow. "Nice to meet you hummons, I'm sure you'll love it here!" The candy cane retreated inside as Songbird ushered the humans through the door.
The Dinning Hall
"Your majesty, the new humans have arrived." Skitz leaned in to whisper in her ear before he turned to the humans and smiled.
The Queen's worried expression shifted into one of glee and enthusiasm. She struck one of the glasses with her spoon and laughed when the humans turned to look. "The other humans have arrived, dearies. Candy cane said they're inside now, oh, this is so exciting! They'll be here shortly! Please, please, don't forget your 'hellos' and 'how are yous' all of you must be so excited."
Suddenly, there was a ding. It signaled the arrival of the elevator down the hall and not longer after that voices drifted into the dining hall.
"Man, this place sure is snazzy!"
"The dining hall is that way! O-Oh, that way, I mean."
The queen let out a delighted squeal. "Let's go say hello to your new friends." She stood up and began walking towards the door, motioning for the humans to follow.
With kid like happiness, Ace stopped burning pastries and happily took the sundae from Harper. She definitely didn't stop and hide the puddle of melted chocolate under a napkin- and a small plate... And the candle didn't blow out because of her toying with it. Nope. Not all. Must've have been the breeze or something like that. Quietly, Ace ate at the surprise sundae. Or sundae surprise. So far, the only thing that surprised her was how good it tasted. It didn't need to be repeated that she had nothing like it ever before.
With spoon in her mouth, she looked up when Jasper asked her question. "Mmf, Thass, a good questiom." Her words were distorted, but nonetheless, she could be understood. Her gaze went over to Leila for a brief moment, realizing she had not said a word to the girl. She would have said something to make up for it, but the Queen started to speak. So, Ace settled with a happy wave before focusing on the woman in charge.
"Yes, they were just like you...but they went mad."
So that's what had happened? They didn't get everything as planned? It was quite a shame to hear such a thing, but then again, Ace still thought it would be nice to live in Nowhere. She was biased about her opinion obviously, but understood that everyone had important things when they got home. Ace didn't voice her opinion on that. She never did. Just as when Harper spoke of what they wanted to return for when the groups had been divided, she never answered. Not too delved in her own thoughts and misgivings, she noticed -and probably assumed- Harper paling in shock.
"Hey, no worries! It's alright, we've got a good group. I trust that we'll get everything in time. You guys are pretty smart and tactile- and kind of weird, ha, so put it all together and we're one heck of a team!" Ace pushed the empty bowl forward, this time, not rushing to replace it. She didn't want to overindulge and then feel sick when she stood. Ace wasn't that insensible. "Just focus on your goal and why you want to get out of here. That should be motivation enough, right?"
*
With the new information- with the knowledge of other people Ace got to meet, she bounded after the queen. "I didn't know there would be new people! Awesome!" She was in step with the queen for awhile before she paused and looked back at the three. "Well don't just sit there! We have to go say hi to them!" Instead of waiting, which she probably could have done, she walked back, urging them along. It was something Harper and Jasper should've been used to- but this time it was probably the sweets she took in that made her do it. And yes, even Leila got urged along. No one was to be left behind!
Ace took the lead and -surprisingly- waited for the door to be opened. Upon seeing them, Ace scanned the group. There was five of them. Rescanned. Oh wait, one of them was a Nobody, so only four. Two guys, a girl, and one she wasn't quite sure- but the person had bright pink hair, kind of like Pinky. She didn't mind it of course, and gave a welcoming smile. "Hi th-" Ace paused and then shook her head. "Wait, that's not right." She gestured towards the Queen and let her speak first. Let the girl in charge speak first. And then you can speak.'
Ace waited for the Queen's welcome, and of course, whatever else she had to say. Once it fell silent, Ace waited just a few more seconds. Just in case she had anything else to add. . . When no more was said (or when she was done again) Ace grinned and gave her own greeting. "Hi there! Welcome to the group! I'm Ace! I'm sure you guys'll have fun with us. And," There was a pause as Ace rocked on her toes for a few moments. "Oh you should try the sweets! They're wonderful!" Now, everyone else was able to introduce themselves.
As friendly as Ace was, she was still weary of people being cross. Not to her, but to the ones she seemed as her friends. So if one of them so happened to do such, she wouldn't hesitate to intervene.
Outside the Castle
Before Vincent could begin his scathing, and oh so witty retort towards Songbird, the atmosphere bristling with electric tension, he was suddenly grabbed by one of the same vines he had just been tugging off, and after being splattered with saliva or whatever the hell it was, was suddenly shot through the air, his sight of his companions disappearing instantly and his world being replaced by stomach churning spinning, over and over again for what felt like eternity before his body suddenly landing in the spongy, springy marshmallow crash mat.
“Well, Mr. Grieves, how nice of you to join us. Fancy the sky’s much bluer when you’re sailing through it,” Songbird’s tone was dripping with the sarcasm that none of the other guides dared to talk with. Then again, the dude pissed him off within the first few seconds of their meeting, so he could kiss good conduct hasta la vista, baby.
Rising to wobbly feet, Vincent stumbled forwards, almost tripping over himself several times as he looked towards the Nobody, to his three human companions and Froggy, as well as a queer beaver bus driver whom had just kindly drove them all to the castle in a minibus. The fact that there was actual transportation would have probably registered with Vincent if it wasn’t for the fact that his thoughts were now transfixed entirely on one person. On him. Songbird. Vincent just stared at him, quietly staring as his feet grew stronger, his stance more confident, his stomach less vomit ready. Staring, and thinking.
‘That weird freak’s not too bad afterall.’
For any other person, Songbird’s reaction might have prompted crushing sadness or raging anger. For Vincent, it was respect.
Inside the Castle
Sometime later, and again who can tell precisely how much time later considering the screwy natures by which Fox has gifted her rp with, the new quartet of hommuns, led by their Nobody guides had been led into the castle, and led further on towards the magnificent dining hall that awaited them on the other side of a magnificent pair of double doors at the end of the corridor. Vincent was rendered transfixed and speechless, with his jaw hanging low as his eyes swept their regal surroundings, being suitably impressed by everything that he saw. Normally, Vincent didn’t have any real taste for this kind of building or the décor that it had, having no desire to really associate or be surrounded by any sort of posh pricks who might live in such a place, but Nowhere’s castle was that magnificent, that much of an incredible spectacle that it demanded attention. Again, Vincent was left impressed.
He wanted the castle.
“And here we are! The Queen and the other humans are right through here and, please! Remember your manners!”
The doors were gently opened, and Riley, Vincent, Lesley and Inadi were shepherded by Songbird and Froggy into the Dining Hall, and to the awaiting presence of several new strangers. Vincent emitted an impressed whistle, at both the splendour of the dining hall and these new humans, a wide grin stretching across his face as he took them all in.
Women. Thank god most of them were women.
Of the six figures that were there, four of them were women. It was easy to make out which of them was the Queen, dressed in such priceless frocks as she was. A bit too frilly for Vincent’s tastes, but she was pretty enough. And the other girls… well, they weren’t too bad either.
His attention immediately turned to Ace. With a bombshell body like that and a pretty face, it wasn’t hard for Vincent to be automatically enamoured by her. Jasper and Leila were good looking too, although not quite Vincent’s type. Both of them were pretty in their own right, but they had a… lithe, demureness to them that didn’t match Vincent’s appetite. Jasper’s hair colour was striking, and the dress she was wearing suited her well. But she was… lacking a little something. Leila, on the other hand, wasn’t lacking. She was huge! There was nothing wrong with tall girls, they were hot, but she was way too tall! Even then, the three ladies provided nice eye candy, and if there was one thing Vincent loved, it was candy. Maybe his wish was finally coming true after all. Riley and Lesley provided a nice start. These four ladies continued that tradition.
And there, nestled in-between all of them was Harper Riddle. Small, quiet, unassuming man, outnumbered by a bevy of babes… Vincent silently nodded to himself. Little shorty was a playa. Respect.
He walked forwards, thrusting his fist out and prompting the young man to stick his own out for Vincent to strike. Fistbump. He then turned his attention to the rest of the ladies, and slid his hands through the saliva still permeating parts of his body, using it to slick back his messy, unkempt hair, to try and present some kind of decorum and good impression (if there was one thing Ma Grieves always said, it was to make a good first impression to a lady), before offering his (still wet and sticky) hand out to any one of the ladies to take.
“’sup. My name’s Vincent, but you ladies can call me Vinny. It’s a… pleasure to meet you.” His foxish grin widened further, before he looked towards Ace. That hot babe had just said to him the magic word. “Where’s the sweets?”
"It's a sad story... They were like you once and we loved them. We worked side by side with them, we helped them and they helped us. Yes, they were just like you...but they went mad. Their cycle is over. Promise me you'll keep the list safe. I don't want the same thing to happen all over again. Whatever you do, don't trust them."
Shivers ran up her spine, the external hairs on her arms prickling as goosebumps appeared on its surface; dotting her complexion. Something about the Queen was off and Jasper just couldn't shake the feeling that something about Nowhere was entirely wrong. It was quite a disturbing sense to have, building up inside after every quest. The natural norm of Ace's reaction was uplifting and hopeful, brimful with enthusiasm and the will to continue. Jasper wasn't so sure. Already her sadness and longing for earth was weighing down on her, changing her very personality and remolding her previous beliefs in life. Reflecting an how she acted in the past compared to the fears and boundaries she'd faced in her time there, it was almost as if she had transformed into a whole new person, yet the identity remained the same. Jasper Golding... reborn?
"The other humans have arrived, dearies. Candy cane said they're inside now, oh, this is so exciting! They'll be here shortly! Please, please, don't forget your 'hellos' and 'how are yous' all of you must be so excited. Let's go say hello to your new friends."
The ding noise that sounded confirmed that the new shipments had reached the door and unfamiliar voices broke through the dining hall quiet. She hated it. Every couple of weeks there would be new people, more humans putting their life on the line to get out subliminally. They didn't know any better, but if they had then she was sure that none of them would've ever set foot in the train. Watching Ace break into a speed walk side by side with Queen Delirium, Jasper knew that the must be excited to greet other newcomers. It was her turn to greet and welcome, taking the position of someone with more experience in the foreign land than the recently shipped humans. Screeching to a sudden halt, she watched the busty one come bounding back only to pull them to the entrance to greet the newbies.
Scanning the fresh faces with a curious gaze, she sized up each one, but withheld any opinions. A redhead female, but much less in the chest area compared to Ace. She looked excited and curious. A blond hooded male followed and immediately, Jasper could sense he wasn't the gentleman type. She cringed a bit, making a mental note to stay cautious around that one. Next was a dark haired fellow with a glasses. He looked quite pleasant and intelligent. The last one was a pink haired... person. At first glance she immediately thought it was a girl, but the longer she examined, she was beginning to think something was a bit off, yet she settled that she was a female.
The hooded one came up first, hair slicked back and extended a hand which had some sort of weird residue. She sure wasn't going to touch it. Waving shyly and nodding, she retreated behind the greeting crowd a bit. 'Hmmm.. Vincent. I can remember that'
Tick-tock. The needle is going tick-tock.
It's making my already impatient heart hurry.
Tick-tock. The needle is going tick-tock.
Moving ahead, the sense of stopping is blurry.
Yet again, he was standing there.
A lone existence within the dark room.
Blind and deaf, he could only stare.
In that space, only darkness could bloom.
Hakuren understood this was his own mind, a closed space only he could enter. Whether it was his unconsciousness, consciousness, subconsciousness or whatever you wish to call it, it did not truly matter. Not at all. It was the same as time. How long had they been in Nowhere? How long had he been in this state of mind? How long had he existed in this current form? It was information of not the slightest necessity, thus completely irrelevant. So long as he remained in that bewildering world, the passage of time could not be measured properly and, even if it was, it would not offer anything. It was simply a term, which could not find a proper purpose, not in that twisted candy dimension at least. Where square roots had a thing for the fancy, rabbits had social problems and computers probably ate websites for breakfast, this country was one full of wonders. If ever a contest were to be held, it would certainly defeat The Country of Hearts from "Alice in Wonderland". Nowhere was a peculiar place indeed.
What was waltzing through the young man's mind, however, was nothing along the lines of marveling over the exquisiteness of his whereabouts, neither bodily, nor mentally. Rather, he was attempting to assemble all the facts and piece them together, in order to form what could be classified as "a recap". It was a slight hassle, for he discovered that several names of former companions, which he had encountered in the lobby at the train station, escaped his memory. Despite feeling a bit of distaste in his mouth for not being able to create the full reconstruction of their journey, it equally did not bother him. Those people were already part of another world, which he did not intend to enter in the near future. This being said, they were no longer of any importance. What was worth the worry was that he had forgotten so quickly. The gap between the batch's arrival and the end of their second mission was vague. It was nearly impossible to precisely determine the distance between the two events. Yet, as mentioned beforehand, time did not exist or was at least irrelevant in Nowhere in the norms familiar to human beings, thus it was ridiculous to even think of the time spent from one occurrence to the other. Albeit this illogically logical Nowhereian statement had been confirmed on numerous occasions, the youngster could tell that it had not been very long ago. He relied solely on his intuition, on his inner senses, which told him that certain requirements had not been met. If time were not to be taken into consideration, he could easily replace it with brain storage. A certain amount of space had to be taken in his mind by information before trivial, yet maked as potentially important, pieces of information could be erased. In his current condition, the lad was aware that such was not the case and he had definitely not acquired enough for there to be a need to delete. The more he tried to remember, the more irritable it became.
Coming into terms with not knowing something that should have been known was a rather tricky task for him to accomplish. A test, so to speak. And yet this bothersome feeling soon came to pass. Or had it taken him long? It certainly had not felt as the latter, which meant it should have been the first. It was only logical, yet ofttimes the known senseless slander was a profound thesis. A certainty became absurd. Such were the rules of this country. If this were to be taken as a constant, then anything, anything at all, was possible. The possibility of endless possibilities was an abyss many on Earth had either dared not enter or had jumped right into. In both cases, the individual often lost something. One - his chance of greatness, the second - his sanity. With Nowhere being this kind of bottomless pit, if not walked through with caution, insanity was sure to catch on quickly.
Understanding that it was impossible to remember that, which had presumably not happened long ago, Hakuren assumed that an outside force was the likely cause of this incoherence. It could have been due to the blows to his head. They had been quite injurious. He had not woken up for awhile, after all, and could not force himself to awaken. Wounds were the most plausible explanation. And yet he count recall that one statement he believed he heard some time ago. Perhaps it had been at the station or at the lobby. It was from a memory very early on, before he had met Dissonance and Serenade, before the Shakespearean and the Siren. What were the exact words? "The more you stay, the more you forget."? If we were to take it as granted, it would be more or less a contradiction. "The more you stay" implies that we are speaking of a certain period of time. With it being irrelevant, how could one know when boundaries were crossed and "the more" piled up? It would explain his lack in memory, however, this was an idea he decided to put off. No further evidence pointed that everyone was affected in a similar matter, none that he knew of at least. It would have been due to the hits to the head, which was far better answer than someone taking away his memories or them simply fading away. Yet that theory did tie nicely with his concept of the Queen and Train. Nevertheless, the youngster knew he needed more facts, more experience on the field, before coming up with a proper thesis on the matter. Making a note to himself to write at least half of his current findings in his notebook, the boy felt, you could say, at ease. With the past cleared up and left behind him, he was ready to walk towards the future. Right after he lazed about in bed, of course.
As Leon lay in bed somewhere in the massive castle, hands on his stomach and legs crossed in a relaxed position, he grew all the more confused. Nowhere was strange, he would give it that. The room he was resting in was fairly normal, from the unusually high ceiling inlaid with golden, sparkling stars down to the soft king-sized bed. Here, surrounded by around a dozen exceedingly fluffy pillows, Leon had sank into a hole of fluff and feathers. There was nothing spectacular or unique going on in his mind, nothing he felt apart from the usual emptiness. He really did consider himself a waste of oxygen, simply a living and breathing vessel capable of molding itself to fit its surroundings. He'd long ago decided to get a chameleon to talk to and had one back in his residence in Tokyo, a chameleon he'd so smartly named Leon 2.0. While he did feel the urge to go back to Tokyo and see whether Leon 2.0 had survived Leon's latest existential crisis - admittedly one he'd never come back from, lying in a fluffy sinkhole in another world, literally - Leon didn't really feel much for the poor reptile. Absentmindedly, he started wondering whether to arrange Leon 2.0 an elaborate funeral or chuck it out of the window. Yet he found himself unable to remember the layout of his home, or what car he drove. What had that girl said? "The more you stay, the more you forget?" It was strange and mildly unnerving but nothing of immediate concern to the boy.
Eventually, his scattered thoughts faded away and despite his desire to simply lay down and go back to sleep, Leon knew it was already far past daybreak and he needed to get up and do something productive. Not that he normally did, unless consuming oxygen counted as productive, but he figured the Queen wouldn't be too happy with his pointless existence. He managed to crawl out of his fortress after a bit of struggling and rose to his knees in the middle of the bed, stretching his arms upwards towards the ceiling, the action following with several cracks and pops. By the time he had washed and dressed, a good long hour had passed. Still situated in front of the body-length mirror, Leon fished his earrings from his jacket pocket (the jacket had been unceremoniously snatched away from Mado the moment they'd gotten back) and put them back in, admiring the way the light glinted off of the inlaid gold flakes. They really were one of a kind and he couldn't even remotely begin to imagine losing them. He remained in front of the mirror for the next half hour, hands on his hips and inspecting himself from every angle. Luckily, he hadn't deteriorated much during their travels.
By the time it was late morning, staring at himself in the mirror had become pretty boring so, flinging his jacket over his shoulder, Leon left the room. The door's loud bang behind him didn't register as he found himself standing in a very long hallway that only seemed to have his room. Shrugging, he set off at a leisurely pace down one side of the hallway, as if taking a stroll in a garden, looking for something even he didn't know. Eventually, however, he did come upon a garden after several long and tiresome minutes of walking down the carpeted hallway. An ornately-decorated arch opened up into a vast garden beyond, a garden that could qualify as a child's dream of Candyland.
He spent several minutes marveling at the garden, circling the trees - a bit like a predator - and inspecting the cotton-candy bushes. There never really was anything normal in this place, was there?
In a room without anyone's warmth,
I'm stretching out my frozen hand.
A place completely blocked for my hearth.
Faceless, they walk, an ignorant band.
Yawning like a cat under the warm sunny rays in a midsummer day, Hakuren stretched his arms upwards above him. The rest he had had, long or short, had certainly been enough to please his bodily needs. The soft covers and pillows of his lovely double bed provided such warmth and comfort, that he did not wish to move a muscle. To simply curl up like a good pet and sleep the day away. It was tempting, yet would not fit in with the rest of the young man's plans. Frankly speaking, it would be the cheerful trumpet of the minor. A cold shower during winter. A celery ordering a salad, even.
Once his eyes escaped the haze of slumber, the youngster examined his surroundings and easily reached the conclusion that he had been brought back to the palace of the Queen.
To the right of the bed from his point of view were the tall windows, the glass spotless from top to bottom, through which light bent and broke into the confines of the chamber. Above each was a shorter halfmoon of stained glass, a lovely piece of decoration that enhanced the merry atmosphere. Curtains gently floated from the top, their colour being a shade of light sky blue, with white star symbols here and there, just the same as the ones coming down from the canopy of the bed.
To the left was the door and a set of drawers, as well as a nightstand nearby. All the furniture was wooden and white, with carvings of different kinds. Some bore abstract curves and swirls. Others had deer and trees embedded into them. Of course, it would not have been Nowhere if not for the occasional cupcake or ice-cream character drawn randomly in places. The walls did not stoop lower, for they were also white with plenty of decor.
The overall design of the room would remind one of the Rococo period in the human world. Fancy. Fantastic. Romantic. It was the epitome of frivolousness. A moment in history where all was as if let lose and indulged in the beauty of forms and colours. A marvelous jovial time for artists. Yet it was not to last, a childish dream, just like this room.
Pushing himself upwards to a sitting position, the young man ran his fingers gently through his black-blue hair and a slight sting quickly followed. Apparently whoever had taken care of him during his coma-like state had done a good job in healing him, but the pain had not finished packing its bags just yet and the wound remained, closed but still there. In spite of this, the lad still smiled. After yawning once more, his smile became even bigger as he got himself out of bed.
Barefoot he walked on the marble floor, which was an art piece itself. A portrait of the sky it was; with stars, flying whales, turtles in celestial currents and all kinds of wondrous beings playing in what seemed to be a beautiful corner of deep space. Upon reaching the other side of the room, he stood in front of a full-sized mirror, only to discover he wore nothing more than a long white shirt that almost reached his knees and his underwear. Moreover, it looked as though he had had a bath, for his hair was clean and his skin felt a bit softer.
"Missed my chance again, didn't I?" he sighed, fists pressed on each side of his waist.
It was a disappointment indeed. He would have liked nothing more than being in the bath with a bunny girl or one of those cat ladies. Then again, sleeping through the process could have been a blessing, if the one who had taken the liberty of washing him had been some fatso or brainless muscle-maniac.
Dismissing this already past event, Hakuren made his way to another door, which lead to a small personal bathroom, where he washed and freshened up. After performing the most basic hygiene rituals, the youngster changed into his usual attire, consisting of a blue shirt, midnight green coat, dark blue jeans and brown boots. The woolen sweater and the scarf, which had been worn during his arrival in Nowhere, he intended to leave behind, just as he had done before leaving for the first mission. Wherever he went, it had been warm enough to not place layers over layers of clothing on oneself. From what he recalled, they were meant to face dragons in the journey to come. Albeit he did not wish to imagine what Nowhere's dragons breathed, the simple assumption that they were reptilians mean that they preferred warmer climates. This being said, he did not see the need to dress warmly or at least not now, for they were in the castle, where the temperature was pleasantly cool.
Having completed these two tasks, the boy proceeded with taking out his black notebook from the inside pocket of his coat and writing down the thoughts and reflections he had had during sleep. Fortunately, the item had remained intact and had apparently not been touched by anyone. The bookmark seemed happy to reunite with its master, for parts of its shadowy structure curled and twirled between his fingers. Making it take the form of a pen, he quickly jotted down the words, yet with precision, not missing any details. Even if something or someone was rubbing away their memories, as an artist would with the lines of a sketch, something so recent could not be forgotten that easily. After filling in three pages and half, he put a fin and closed the book, placing it back where it belonged.
Before exiting his quarters, the human opened one of the doors of a wardrobe near his bed and took out two items. A black tie and a hat. The first he tied losely around his collar, in order to give off that semiformal, almost casual, impression. Standing in front of the mirror, he placed the black fedora atop his head and turned it about several times. It was a nifty little accessory, the first present he had received in Nowhere, one given to him by the notorious mermaid Martini. The human adored it quite, just as he fancied the suit he had been given by the same fishy designer, yet refrained from dressing up so formally. In his opinion, he had gotten well acquainted with the Queen, enough to drop the serious act.
Just he finished adjusting the hat, the youngster spotted in the mirror the reflection of a pair of shoes neatly placed next to his bed. There had been no other person next to him when he awakened and there was a small ribbon and a card attached to the pair, thus it was obviously a gift. They were a pair of black brogues shoes, with details so fine they could be called an artwork. Elegant in a gentleman sense, he did not hesitate to try them on. Being just the right size and feeling quite comfortable, the lad decided to leave them on for his meeting with the Queen and the rest of his companions. Maintaining an image was one thing, appreciating a gift was another. The boots would have to await his return, for they would be needed in the upcoming adventure. A challenge involving dragons meant a terrain, on which one had to be stable, not fancy.
With this final preparation completed, the young man took his leave from his bedroom.
Tap, tap, tap. Footsteps resounded in the halls. Brogues certainly made you stand out when all else was quiet. The corridors had not a soul in sight, apart from the occasional rabbit guard, who passed by, but the critters' feet were so soft and light that they did not make a single sound as they marched forward. In contrast, Hakuren's gait, albeit not too proud, announced his presence from far away.
Flags of all kind littered the walls, with paintings often hanging between them. A long carpet ran down the hall, it's colours and patterns changing slowly, yet surely. The walls stood tall and graceful, towering above the passer by. Fortunately for him, there were signs and maps in specific locations, pointing out directions and whereabouts. Rather than take a direct route to the appointed meeting place, which he discovered written on the card in his new footwear, the boy chose to take a slight detour. It was a spectacular building, after all. A jewel of architecture.
Tick-tock. The needle is going tick-tock.
The boundary between the end and the start.
Tick-tock. The needle is going tick-tock.
All has become a piece of abstract art.
As he strode through this peculiar maze, Hakuren came upon an indoor garden, a little paradise of purple cat bell flowers, yellow tart bushes and many more colourful plants. There were even two lollipop trees. What intrigued the young man, as he passed by the marble columns, which were on the right side of the corridor, between which was space, through which one could enter the garden, was that Leon was standing there. Walking about rather absentmindedly, one of the greenest members of their little group seemed to be wondering how to kill some of his boredom. This made a quiet "heh" sound escape the mouth of the one in the midnight green coat. Not losing his newest target once, a playful flame danced in those strange green-blue eyes. Perhaps it would be amusing to toy around with this newbie.
"Hello, Leon." Hakuren greeted his comrade with a friendly smile, as he walked towards him. "Anything stirring in that coop of yours?"
Speak of the devil, it was Hakuren. Leon fully believed, at that moment, that Hakuren had strategically been placed on Earth to simply irritate the living hell out of him. Turning his head a bit towards said menace, Leon schooled his empty expression into one of surprise. "Hakuren. What a pleasant surprise." His voice remained monotone, a sharp contrast against the expression Leon had named 'pleasantly surprised'. Of course, Hakuren was anything but pleasant. A small smile appeared on his face for a split second before he started speaking again. "Seems like that girl and her pipe dealt some lasting damage. Are you sure you have enough brain cells left to function?"
"Certainly." was the other's response, his friendly appearance not once wavering. "It's a pleasure to hear you worried about me. Don't fret, I have enough to make more sense than that 'light as a feather' mind of yours."
Leon smiled back and clasped his hands together behind his back, starting to walk around the tree he had been standing under, giving a very casual appearance to the onlooker. "My, my, someone's quite arrogant I see. I must say, that girl did a fine job of smashing your skull in, I need to send her flowers and a thank-you note. Know her address?"
"Quite the coincidence. It appears I do~" he even beamed. "Your father's place. I do believe she has taken a firm residence there."
"Oh, so she isn't in your room!" Leon exclaimed with a playful smile. "But then again, who would willingly spend time with a human missing the majority of his brain cells?"
"Funny, the same question occurred to me recently. Mind if you tell me from your personal experience, since you did have some of yours pecked away."
"Not as much as poor Hakuren, though." Leon mock pouted before smiling again. "The poor baby is practically incapable of acting like a civilized human being anymore!"
Hakuren could only smirk at that statement, perhaps it was even close to a laugh. Truly, Leon was a greenhorn in this business. Making such accusations could potentially lead him in a deadly situation, not to mention that the ludicracy of his words created the image of a fool, desperately struggling to attack the one in front of him.
"As I recall, dear wingless bird, in our battle with those ruffians, you were the pathetic weakling of the day." he told him, not the slightest bit grazed by his oponent's speech. "While I was busy partaking in the fight, you were in such a daze that you could not lift a rock and throw it right. What does that speak of you, it is not far from even the oaf's mind. "The poor baby" was of greater help than you, the crippled avian." and then his expression became more cheerful and he added in a more casual manner. "Don't worry, Leon. Even the scantiest of broilers end up in the pot."
There was little that hit Leon personally and this wasn't one of those things. So he simply smiled and held back a laugh. "And you think prancing around and displaying your ballet skills was any better? Or was having Leila chucked at you better? It was a fight, dear Hakuren-san, not the Nutcracker."
'Repeating words. He's no longer truly stable. How sweet. Nothing out of the ordinary.' he thought and kept his happy demeanor going.
"Be cock-a-hoop and lighten up, Leo-kun. Just because I was proficient in this one skill doesn't mean you don't have something. You know what they say. "The superior man seeks in himself, whilst the small man - in others. There must be a part of you, which is worth praising, unless, of course, you are simply a blank mask." During the very last sentence, the young man's expression could be compared to that of the tricky fox from folk tales. A hidden mockery, combined with ingenuity and daringness.
There was nothing unpredictable, nothing ingenious anymore, simply a loop of words Leon could almost foresee coming out of Hakuren's mouth. His comment about his blank mask, however, made his smile grow wider. "There is much you don't know about me and unlike you, Mr. Smarticles, I like keeping it private. Now, while I could decide to become a ballerina in the middle of a fight, I didn't get smashed in the head."
"I can't disagree with your first statement." the young man in the midnight green coat said, with his right hand pressed to his chin, as if he were a detective, voicing out his theory regarding the latest murder. However, rather than staying in that position, he swayed the mentioned upper limb to the side, holding it in midair, and allowed his palm to face upwards. "Indeed, there is so much in the depths of what we humans call "empty space" simply awaiting to be discovered." he continued, smiling evermore "A bottomless pit of dark matter. Full and void all the same. A pointless mystery, yet a mystery in fact. It is what keeps many bright minds awake." With a short sigh, the youngster retracted his arm and placed his hand in the pocket of his coat. "However, yours is not the kind of abyss that is to my taste. Shallow. Walled. You are the kind of book that is only interesting when thrown into the fire. Perhaps, even the kaonashi Mado speaks of is deeper than your existence."
Leon remained silent for several moments, taking in the boy in front of him, his golden eyes sharp and piercing. After several long moments, he spoke, "But Hakuren-san, you're forgetting one very important thing. So important that in fact, it renders your entire argument null and void. The constant factor here is that," He paused for a few seconds, a small smile emerging. "You don't know me, at least not well enough. You can't judge what you don't know. Therefore --" At that moment, a sharp spike of pain made him cut himself off and yelp in pain. Something with teeth, very sharp teeth had attached itself to his upper leg and though Leon would never admit it, it had attached itself to the side of his butt.
As exciting as the battle of the two wordsmiths was, a group of certain individuals had not taken a liking to this sudden disturbance in their sweet little garden paradice. Creatures the size of a medium sized poodle had come to check what all the ruckus was about and, seeing as they were not given the least amount of attention from their guests, two of the locals promptly bit the lads on their bottoms, one for each human.
The sensation of feeling the sharp teeth of a being, the other parts of which were made of cotton candy, was a unique experience. In that moment, Hakuren honestly felt like a mailman on his very first day at work. Despite the obvious pain running through his body, he did not let out a sound. Either those pipes had truly dulled out his sense of pain or feeling something tighten around that area was nothing new to him. Perhaps it was a bit of both, with the latter being in greater quantity.
"Oi!!! Yous listen to us when we're talkin!" a cotton candy bush, that now stood between them, spoke. It was nothing more than a pile of colour with eyes. The mouth was completely invisible, the only exception being when they bit someone. "Now shush and eat us!" it insisted.
It took the two humans a few moments to completely comprehend the situation they were in. Staring at the castle dwellers speechlessly, it was as if someone had pressed the mute button. The silence which engulfed the atmosphere was almost unnerving, considering how many words had been poured our prior to this event. The cotton candy bushes actually murmured between themselves, wondering if they were asking too much of their guests, but were soon to be placed in an even more awkward position.
The two boys suddenly broke out in a hysterical laughter, one so hard and loud that their eyes teared up a bit. Their stomachs hurt and their feet began to slightly tremble. To this the sweets could only stare wide-eyed and confused, for they could not comprehend why the two-leggeds were laughing.
"Haaa." Hakuren let out the last of his uncontrolled joviality with a sigh-like finish. Brushing away the few tears in his eyes with his hand, he smiled politely at their hosts. "Excuse us for our sudden arrival and peak of emotion. With your permission, I would like to taste you." How innocent that line sounded.
"Good. Good!" the cotton candy bushes nodded. "Which flavor? Which flavor?"
"Hmm, I think a mix of everything would be delightful. What do you say, Leo-kun?" the green-blue-eyed youngster replied.
There was nothing more Leon would've liked to eat at that moment than the cotton-candy bushes. Whether it was of an underlying need for vengeance (honestly, those rascals weren't amateurs when it came to biting) or his sudden love for sugary snacks, Leon nodded with a wide smile, his golden eyes sparkling in mirth. "A little bit of everyone would be a treat, especially the pink one, you look so yummy!"
If the pink cotton candy bush were a human, it would be blushing right about now. Hastily it jumped forward and provided a long stick from its pocket, which was apparently invisible. All the creatures came closer and cotton threads steadily slid like snakes out of them and gathered around the top of the stick. Within moments, a giant swirl of colour was formed, one which smelled sweeter than ambrosia.
"What a colourful palette." Hakuren remarked.
The bushes were shining with joy and pride. Their newest creation was a success and pleased their guests.
There was, however, one little problem. There was only one stick.
"Don't cause any more commotion now! We like you, cuz you're humans, so take this little present as a token of our hospitality." one of the bushes told the lads, whilst the rest of its hind headed in different directions, away from them.
'And take a hike.' the psychologist finished the sentence in his mind.
"Thank you very much." he thanked the bush, taking the stick of gigantic cotton candy in one hand.
Leon didn't even bother trying to argue with the bushes and ask them for a second stick. Why, ruining their masterpiece was the farthest thing from his mind. It was beautiful and ethereal, glowing in a beautiful array of colors. And it was simply beckoning him to take a bite. And so he did, forgetting to warn Hakuren in case he was one of those people who detested contact, and simply took a direct bite out of the huge mound of cotton candy. It dissolved on his tongue as soon as he put it in his mouth, making his face light up in delight. "I'd live here forever just to be able to eat this regularly," He said before taking another bite. The sweetness of the cotton candy threw everything out of his mind, even the fact that him sharing a cotton-candy stick with the very same guy that he had been arguing with a few minutes ago. He was absentmindedly thanking his lucky stars there was no one around to witness this, except for the bushes, who could subsequently end up ratting them out. But Leon didn't care, instead devoting all of his attention to the delicacy that was the cotton candy.
Hakuren could only chuckle at the younger boy's actions. Leon was like a little child at the carnival, excited to get his hands on the sweet delight that was their present. It did not bother him that this greensprout was freely eating away the cotton candy directly with his mouth, so long as it did not meet with his own. He himself had no intention of using his hands, since he didn't want them to become sticky.
"Careful what you wish for." he told Leon before taking a bite from his side "This really is fantastic!" After two or three more delicious chuncks were down his throat, he added "We should head for the teaparty. The Queen is expecting us, after all."
"Hmm... sure," Leon mumbled through a mouthful of cotton-candy. A tea party sounded absolutely amazing and if the cotton-candy in the garden was this good, Leon couldn't imagine how good the treats at the tea-party would be. He hoped the Queen herself would be there; her crown was fabulous and he wouldn't mind stealing another glance.
After a long walk down the confusing maze that were the castle corridors, with all those turns, twisted signs and doors, the duo finally made it to what was supposedly a door to the Queen's dining hall. By then, the cotton candy had already been consumed and only the stick remained, held by Hakuren, who would sometimes use it to poke Leon as a joke, whilst they strolled down the halls of this magical manor.
Upon pushing the double doors forwards, they found themselves at the right place. Indeed, this was the appointed gathering location, which was a relief, for getting lost in the castle could mean a day or two of isolation. With their mouths clean from their little feast, having stopped at a little drinking fountain beforehand, they were proper and presentable gentlemen. However, all the gazes were directed not at the two, who had just arived, but elsewhere, towards faces fresh and unknown.
Newly arrived humans. Albeit they were a rather odd bunch of people, who was to say their seniors weren't? A total of four individuals, just as colourful as the dessert that had been eaten. One of pink hair. One of ginger. One of blond. And one of green. What a bizarre combination. Only three colours away from a full rainbow set.
Hakuren's gaze instantly landed on the third mentioned. He was man of strenght, with a heavy build and a wild look, the perfect example of a gang boss picked straight from the lawless street. There was actually a chill that tickled the black-blue-haired youngster's spine, yet it was not of fear, nor of horor.
'With that style and overall appearance, he certainly seems like one of those people...Aksel, you bastard. Came to haunt me, didn't you?' he thought.
Despite that pinch of unease, which lasted for simply a heartbeat, there was a smile on Hakuren's face. A small light one, which could easily turn into a grin at any moment. And it did, once his sight came upon the pink-haired newbie.
It looked as though the Pink Panther had drunk a magical potion and was turned into a giraffe. The individiual, whose colouration was most astounding, was rather tall in height, literally towering over every other human in the room. Like a white sheep amidst a black flock, they created an excellent contrast with the rest of the group. Long curly pink hair, gangling legs and splendid attire, this was a person of grace and beauty.
As lovely as this Eiffel tower was, there was something that simply did not click, so to speak, with Hakuren. This particular newcomer was an eye-candy, no doubt, however, something was amiss. At first, he could not tell what exactly it was. Every inch was lovely in its own way, but first impressions ofttimes lied. Thus he continued scanning, whilst Ash and co. introduced themselves. After a thorought observation, the youngster finally understood what had pestered him about his subject's physique. Over the course of existing in his original realm, there had been many women, which he had seen and been with. In addition, his lists on MAL were quite long. These two types of experiences taught him many things, one of which was the finesse of female proportions. No matter how much you changed your angle, not even the skinniest of girls had such a body build, nor was their gait of a similar type. The closer he looked, the more he came to realize the solid fact. Lesley, as he would introduce himself afterwords, was a trap.
Next in line was the only true girl in the new batch. One of ginger hair and straight posture, there was nothing to complain about regarding her appearance. Her chest size was not as big as Ace's and not as small as Jasper's, thus placing her in an acceptable category. When it came to her outfit, she apparently prefered the business outfit, yet it suited her well. Just in case, Hakuren ran some measurements in his head, which confirmed her to be female, at least by proportion standards.
Interestingly enough, there was another person next to the green-haired boy. A young man with brown hair and glasses, hunched a bit forward, wearing casual everyday clothes. Out of all of them, he fell into the same category as Harper. Completely normal, appearance-wise at least. Having nothing outstanding on the outside meant that only the inside would speak of his identity, which made it all that funner. At least one of them would place a challenge to decipher.
As for the green-haired lad, if there was a pink one, why couldn't there be a green one? A candy cane gentleman and Songbird were with them, which mean the latter had been their guide, seeing as the walking stick had been seen working at the castle. Their identities would be revealed in all due time, yet rather than heading directly to the introduction cluster, Hakuren rested his back against the door, which was now closed shut behind him, and watched as the chatter went on, his smile not once taking its leave.
A candy cane in a tuxedo. A bear in a top hat wasn't the weirdest this place could get apparently. A giant walking stick of sugar and peppermint serving as a royal escort to the queen of whatever backwards and freaky land this was. Inadi suddenly began feeling like he was never going to get back home fast enough to pretend this was all a terrible dream. The last few weeks was going to prove to be very damaging to him in the long run in regards to what others would consider mental stability. Luckily, he could emphasize all of that in writing and not truly be seen as mad. At best, maybe a heavy drug user. At least then they couldn't put him in a straight jacket.
Stepping into the dining hall the young man fixed his glasses to see if the surroundings were just a figment of his imagination. Perhaps the fall in the elevator affected him a little more than he thought. But it seemed the vast expanse of the room was as splendid as first sights made them out to be. Now suddenly he felt a bit smaller than he already did coming in. He knew this was a royal's home, he didn't realize just how great the royal was. Everything seemed to fall and mesh perfectly together. Inadi made a mental note to write down the designs he saw in the room. This would be a terrific setting for a book. Maybe something a bit more cheery than the usual medieval dramas that had been stacking up in the libraries he had seen before he left.
Turning his attention to the people in the room he saw six individuals. The small man Harper was the first he spotted simply because he was one of the closer individuals to him. He gave a slight nod in his direction and continued to monitor the room. Seeing the many different women he was a bit nervous to say the least. Especially since each had their own claims to beauty. He began realizing that his glasses were fogging up due to this so he quickly took them off and began rubbing them clean. As he put them back on he noticed one of the party he had come with started to make moves. Inadi thought about however and realized “moves” wasn't the proper word. More like he was making somewhat of an ass of himself.
Here was Vincent, who had just been attacked by a giant slobbering grape vine not a few minutes ago and he was already trying to woo the women in the place. Then introducing himself as Vincent? The amount of hurl that Inadi wished to dispense was almost overwhelming to say the least. In a few steps he walked nearby where Vincent was, but just far enough out of arms distance in case his next sentence got him into any trouble. “Yes, Vincent. Though I'm sure with the lack of wit, manners and charm I'm sure a much simpler way of gathering this one's attention would be Vinvin.” Inadi said with a smile as he jokingly pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose. He could swear that a beam of light struck just as he did too. Odd.
Turning his attention to the group as a whole Inadi quickly bowed his head as a sign of respect. “Greetings to all of you. My name is Inadi Sihma.” The young man said as he picked his head up and smiled. Looking at the table in the room he noticed something rather odd. Walking towards it he picked up a single tart that was resting in a plate full of them. He knew he had seen one of these before. Giving it a quick sniff and then checking the taste by taking a small bite out of it he chuckled as he turned towards the queen herself. “I had no idea that Mr. Cuddles' cinnamon tarts were so popular that even the queen herself was getting them as well.” He said with a smile as he took another bite out of the treat. He made enough of these he probably didn't even need to taste test them. The smell itself was recognizable enough.
Turning his attention back to the rest of the group he gave them all another look at. Everyone here seemed an...interesting collection of individuals. Not one seemed similar to another. Maybe this was just to show how odd that train was that probably brought them all here. Which reminded Inadi of his most important question as he finished the rest of his tart. “So your highness, if I may be so kind to ask, when will we all be leaving back for our homes?” He asked with a look of confidence on his face. Clearly they weren't going to be kept here any longer than they had right? Everyone must have families and friends they needed to return to. And besides, what could the Queen herself possibly have use for of them? Surely nothing at all in Inadi's thoughts.
