The hiss of vacuum filled Kettu's ears.

She floated across the surface of the station, surrounded by millions of twinkling stars. Finding a spot, she sat and stared into that bright, color-filled void of space. Her single eye stared with a tired longing, into that abyss, wondering if it would ever answer back. Her obsession, her muse. It was out there. She closed her eyes, focusing on that faint sound within her head. A soft sound, musical in nature, that grew ever slightly louder when she was out here, alone.

"Sky Eye, this is Hoyland Station. Your chassis has been successfully transferred to the Spirit of Adventure. Instructions have come down to report to the hangar bay as soon as possible for boarding and briefing. Hoyland Station out."

The comm chatter broke her careful meditation. Her eye lazily opened and the void before her sparked seemingly a little less. The traffic of the station now filled her view, her temporarily quiet spot had been ruined. With a sigh, she slowly stood and drifted her way back to the airlock...

Entering the bay, she saw an assortment of mechs. There were several high-performance, transforming ones. In fact, aside from one other, her mech seemed to stand out with how utilitarian its appearance was. The Pharos model, much like other Northstar designs, was built for their rugged utility and efficiency. Despite the bulky appearance, there was not one inch of wasted space on that chassis. The rough edges and sharp angles contrasted hard with many of her new squadmates' smoother curves. She approached the gathering group, her face set in her normally emotionless, neutral stare.

Though to those who may know her or have a keen eye, there was a slight lighting up of her features when she saw Mii. She approached her and tapped Mii on the shoulder.

"Nice to meet you again, Tzukazui. It has been... some time since we last spoke." Kettu said, her voice fairly monotone and slightly muffled by her face wrappings. Internally, she battled fiercely with herself not to reach out and pat the Lepizari's head or rub the large rabbit ears. This culminated in a slight twitch in her right hand, but nothing more.

@SleepyWrites
So true. I don't think I'd be confident enough to really sell the CIA-quality aptitude in a character but AvaP has delivered on that front. xD

@AvaPYou seem to have a wide knowledge base when it comes to history, geography, war, government structure and things surrounding these topics. Is this true?

Yeah, I was originally going to major in Intelligence Analysis and work for one of the three-letter agencies before I switched majors to something I've always wanted to do. The big holdover for that is the knowledge of the field. I'm no expert. More like an "enthusiastic hobbyist" lol, but I've always had a passion for history, government, macroeconomics, etc.

I appreciate the compliment and I'm happy y'all are enjoying Alison! I've been trying to capture the energy of Josh Brolin's character in "Sicario" and Jason Hudson from Black Ops, but with a slightly more positive twist. Glad to see it's working out well enough.
Posted! Sorry for the delay, I thought I had already posted beforehand. Anyway, responded to those who talked to Alison. Feel free to retroactively introduce yourselves if you haven't already, I can work in her response before carrying on. Hope y'all enjoy.
Observation was a cultivated skill of Alison. Something crucial to not just surviving, but thriving in her line of work.

"Alison, I'm so glad you came. How are you?" MacKenzie's voice greeted as Alison walked into the tavern. The lovely French accent put a smile on Alison's face. It was still odd how young MacKenzie was, yet how skilled she seemed to be in her craft. Source powers were certainly something else, but Alison suspected MacKenzie probably was familiar with the bow before arriving in this world. Something about her build, the way she carried herself and favored certain resting positions, all spoke to some athletic or professional ability. Alison gazed behind MacKenzie to see a crew more motley than she had anticipated, all gathered around staring up at her from an impromptu conference table. "Umm, guys," MacKenzie said to everyone. "This is Alison. Alison, meet my party, my comrades, and most of all... my dear friends," she said, endearment rining through each word.

Alison gave a small nod to the group, her face relatively neutral as she continued to size up the party. "Pleasure to meet you all. MacKenzie spoke highly of this group and I think her praise wasn't misplaced. I'm Alison Walker." Motley was barely scratching the surface.

"If you could not tell by that accent..." MacKenzie could barely contain her giggles. "...Alison is from the United States."

To this, Alison nodded again. "East Coast, for those interested. Hell of a situation we all find ourselves in." Alison said.

With that, the group began introducing themselves, starting with the well-armored man. His body language and demeanor already spoke volumes to Alison that he was not like her or the others. He carried himself more like a local and this was soon proven true. He stood and clasped her arm in an oddly familiar handshake she had exchanged with some of her team members back in her old world. She always thought it was a little much, but now it was a strange comfort of familiarity coming from him.

“Barracker Kassel, it is good to meet you Alison.” the man introduced himself, smiling warmly. “I am not as special as the rest of you all. I am a simple Valheim boy. But I’m here to help, and I can start by getting you a drink. What are you having?” he said in a jovial tone. The grip was strong, hiding what Alison suspected to be a far greater strength. There was a steadiness to it too, something she suspected came from experience. That said, his voice belied youthfulness. This combo, as Alison knew, was not uncommon in places like this world and beyond. Wars like this produced plenty of Barrackers, Alison knew all too well. She returned the warrior handshake with equal firmness and smiled.

"Pleasure Mr. Kassel, I'm sure we can use all the help we can get from keeping your city out of the hands of the enemy. I have some ideas, but that can wait. Though, I'll take you up on your offer, for now, a light ale would be perfect." Alison responded, gesturing to Frederick.

“Well, I’ll be! Ain’t that somethin’? Glad to have a fellow American in our midst,” A tall, tan man approached her with an accent that nearly gave her whiplash. He gave a friendly grin. “Name’s Clive. Just a simple farmer, but I reckon we’ll get along just fine. Welcome to Mytheria.”

Alison couldn't help but return that grin. "Nice to meet you, Clive. Texas, right? I worked with a lot of people from there. You're a reliable bunch, so glad to have one of the Lone Star's finest out here in this crazy world as well." she said, shaking his hand, though in a more common way. Clive was certainly fitting the "salt of the earth" types she had met when working on inter-border operations. She had fond memories of those ridiculous cowboy hats their police and rangers wore, dragging the HVTs from their cells for some enhanced interrogation on cartel movements. A small shudder ran up her spine as she then remembered clearing smuggling tunnels alongside them as well. A reliable group of people, it was a true comfort to hear that twang of the South in her ears again. She wondered what led him to be here.

"Zell Brooks. A pleasure." Zell offered Alison a one-sided grin and his hand to shake. "Any friend of Mac is a friend of mine. Boy, do we have a lot to talk about," he said. Alison returned the feigned ignorance and the handshake. Unlike Barrackers warrior handshake of trust and Clive's friendly shake, Zell's handshake was of profession and care. North London, Alison determined, was where he must be from. Plenty of times had she worked with his more clandestine brethren across the globe, and she was glad to know that much like them, Zell had proven to be a reliable man. He kept a good-natured appearance, one that was carefree, but Alison knew there was sharpness underneath that demeanor, one that was always on the lookout. Alison also noticed a bruising, the same on Barracker. A scuffle, a disagreement? Maybe that local somehow found out about the op last night. Well, whatever it was, she would ask Zell later.

Next was a woman more around Alison's age. There was a gentle yet firm demeanor about her, speaking to her experience. Alison took her offered hand as the woman introduced herself. Again, there was a firm yet gentle grip in that handshake. Confidence was read in her eyes as in turn she looked Alison up and down. Alison couldn't help but also be slightly distracted by the large bird on her shoulder.

"Fenna Postma, from the Netherlands. Mother of two, forest guard back home, Ranger here," she said, before gesturing to the hawk perched upon her shoulder. "And this is Sil, I met her on the first day being here," she said. A Dutch woman and a forest ranger turned Robin Hood ranger at that. Alison wondered how she compared to MacKensie in a contest of archery. Their builds and equipment seemed different enough to imply a very different approach from both.

"Nice to meet you, Mrs. Postma. Dutch? Lovely place and the real gateway to Europe when it comes to trade. Glad to meet you and your little companion here." Alison said in a friendly manner as she finished the handshake. If she had to guess, she was northern Dutch, either Fryslân or Groningen based on the "Gs", they were a dead giveaway, but beyond that, it was impossible to place specifics.

They took their seats while waiting for their drinks, MacKensie making it a point to sit down next to Alison as she took her seat in front of the remaining party. Next to introduce themselves was a very tall young man. Alison maintained her professional, neutral face but felt bad for the boy internally. "Kid's not even old enough to drink and ended up here. Never got to show his potential, grow into a full man before having his life cut short." Alison thought to herself as he introduced himself.

The young man's name was "Adam" and was from Michigan. Alison could never place specifics with that region. Too much linguist wandering with those guys in her mind. People from Minnesota sounded too similar to the Dakotas, Albertans, and so on. Then Ohio and Michigan were practically indistinguishable at times. Tangents for later, as he then posed a question to her.

“Have you been doing alright here in Mytheria?” he asked, a hint of concern in his tone. Alison chuckled and waved her hand dismissively.

"Surviving, to say the least," Alison said as she rested her head in her hand. "I suppose I should explain myself a little." she paused, and sighed, weighing what she should tell and what she should hold to herself. "I was... a data consultant back in my previous life. Before I passed."

Old habits die hard it seems. Alison continued

"As you all know, we came here in strange stone coffins. MacKenzie here told me as much, and I was no different. I woke up in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by woods, and had little to no idea what the hell was going on. Still don't. But, as was my job and knack was for, I began searching for answers. I eventually found civilization, and as it turned out, my abilities and disposition made me a good fit for the... less well-known denizens of this world. So I worked. I learned. " Fenna spoke up.

"It must have been tough, by yourself," Fenna said softly. Alison gave an appreciative half-smile to her and shrugged.

"I survived and found good work with the Thieves Guild. Made my path through this new life. I now have a good crew, people I have and can rely on in my life... I'll probably introduce you to them later. But anyway, I made my way, and during all this, I still couldn't even begin to understand the question I started with: What the hell am I doing here?"

Alison then gestured to MacKenzie, putting a firm hand on her shoulder and shaking her with a grin. "But then, this ball of light comes walking into the Brass Monkey. Now, the Second Chance, a great name by the way, really cute, was not exactly unknown. Great adventures who fell from the sky, carrying untold powers, and seem to be rapidly rising through the ranks toward greatness! At least, that was the narrative once we arrived in this sieged city. But then my crew and I put two and two together and realized I seemed to share a lot of the traits and match some of the rumors of you folk. So, we tested it, and low and behold I found this girl here is like me! And not only that, but there is a whole group of people like me." Alison said, finally releasing MacKenzie's shoulder.

Alison then spread her hands and leaned back in her chair, accepting the drink as Frederick returned with their orders. After taking a sip, she shrugged. "And so here I am, finally finding a piece to a very big puzzle." she then leaned in, eyes gleaming for the first time. "So tell me, do you have any more?"

Somewhere over the Atlantic

Ayvee Reagan laid back in her seat as the clouds drifted by. Her mask hung off the side as listened to her tunes playing softly as they flew in formation through the air. These moments were always calming for her, just drifting through the clouds. It was also nice to have a chance to admire everyone's aircraft. The squadron was truly diverse, with several exotic aircraft, herself included. Though that at least was something she was familiar with at this point in her career. Valk was a bit interesting. Someone who had flown against the N/UN now working for them. Though in the line of mercenary work, that was also not very surprising. You fly where the money was, and the N/UN alongside Shattered Steel often offered the largest payout. Or at the very least, consistent work. However, that wasn't completely true for Ayvee. Working for some of the other big players often came with some uncomfortable connotations as well. Eastern block states had a habit of tasking mercs to bomb civilian targets, and far Eastern blocks were like that but with ships. At least the N/UN clients tried to keep their work somewhat clean. She may be a mercenary, but even she had her principles.

Her almost meditative state of thought was cut short as the comms came to life. Thankfully it was the inevitable small talk of the squadron rather than a panicked call of contact. Ayvee smiled at the banter, glad to hear they were all starting to get along. She pressed the transmitter button with her thumb and spoke.

"Cobalt 4 here, Cobalt 5, no worries here. Can't honeypot the bear if the bear doesn't enjoy the honey," she said with a laugh.

After the ribbing died down, she decided to chime in again.

"Cobalt 4 here. I wouldn't worry so much about that one. So Cobalts, got a fun road trip question for you. If you had to be any animal, what would it be?" she said casually. A fun way to pass the time and learn a bit about her new squadron. Keeping the questions from being too personal was a point as well, what with the sorted pasts all mercs seem to carry.

Posted! Sorry, was a bit long but I was chasing some inspiration while filling out the lore surrounding her abilities. Sorta spiraled into covering backstory, ability lore, and so on. Lots of fun to type but man! My next posts will hopefully be a bit more concise lol.

As a side note, any holy-attuned people may now feel another "presence" around Alison as a result of the "Whispers" now fully manifesting.

Oh, and I left it open-ended and a little further in the day so you guys can resolve the Zell-Barracker throwdown and gather accordingly before getting to Alison's arrival, or however you want to do it.

Hope all that text is a good read!
Ink drips onto the coarse paper, and the metal blade of the pen weaves it into words, symbols, and images. The book's pages turn, and in her mind's eye, she reads from it, unable to tear her eyes away...

Alison awoke in her bed. Light persistently pierced the ratty curtains that hung in a vain attempt to block it out. A loud yawn and a moaning stretch filled the room as she sat up. She blinked and rubbed her eyes. It felt strange, to awake from a familiar dream over and over again. Each time a new page, new words, and...

She looked down at her hand to see where the source crystal lay. She shook her hand and stood. It was time to get ready for the day.

Alison yawned again as she wandered down the stairs to the ground floor of the Brass Monkey.

"Good morning, Miss Jane Doe." a whisper said teasingly.

Alison spun on the stairs and nearly fell. Her head darted around to see who had said that, but nobody was there. It came as a raspy whisper, almost right by her ear. She stood there for a moment, pausing, listening, observing.

Nothing.

A shiver crept down her spine and Alison continued down the stairs. Ever since she touched that damned book, she had been experiencing these strange whispers. A word here, a sound there, it was always on the edge of her hearing, something she couldn't quite make out. But now, she heard it clearly, It was unsettling enough to imagine such voices in your ears. It was even worse when they were familiar.

Alison sighed, resuming her descent down the stairs. She needed coffee.

Working off of little sleep was something Alison was very, very familiar with. She had mastered the art of napping years ago and those skills have continued to serve her well ever since. So it was no surprise to her friends when they found her sipping her third cup of coffee as they just began to descend the stairs themselves. Pete gave a big, unapologetic yawn as he plopped himself down in front of Alison, a cup of fresh brew already poured in front of him by Septimus's wife.

"Yous an angel sent by the gods themselves! Septimus don't deserve yous in the slightest. Tell ya what. Why don't ya dumb the grump and lemme treat ya right?" Pete said with his usual exaggerated flair. The old woman hushed him and gave him a playful slap on the shoulder.

"Oh, hush you. Septimus is a fine man and you better be thankful to him! If told him what you told me, you may get some poison in this morning's biscuits!" she responded with her exaggerated flair. It was the morning routine for them, whether the city was getting shelled by an undead army or not.

Kerensa sat next to Alison and took a small sip of her own. Her usually calm and collected face ever so briefly scrunched up before returning to normal. She proceeded to pour a concerning amount of sugar and creme into the mug, turning the black brew into an almost brownish-white. Alison stared in abject horror as Kerensa took another sip and smiled.

"How your teeth haven't rotted out by now is beyond me. You realize we're under siege right? Conservation and all that?" Alison said. Kerensa merely responded by taking a longer sip from her coffee. Alison sighed and then spoke in a lower voice. "I heard them again, but this time I could understand it. Even sounded familiar too."

At this, Kerensa nearly choked mid-sip before quickly recovering. She sat the mug down and looked at Alison. There was something in her eyes that Alison didn't like. A sparkle that she hadn't seen before.

"Let us spar today before the big lunch. I think it's finally time for the book you stole to begin working for you." She said, a dangerous smile appearing on her face.

"Stole? Kerensa it vanished when I picked it up, we failed the job because of that. How the hell can I steal something that evaporates the moment I touch it? You and Olaf had to drag me out of there when that magic trap went off. Felt like my head was going to explode." Alison said confused. Kerensa leaned back and sipped from her cup again, that grin still on her lips.

"It was a wonder your head didn't explode. You must be very good at compartmentalizing information. I wasn't sure until recently, but that was no magical curse nor trap. That was, in fact, the intended use of that particular tome. Come, let me show you." She finished her coffee and put it on the table before walking towards the yard. By then Olaf had joined and had been chatting with Pete, the two distracted before seeing her get up. They looked at each other then Alison, who only shrugged and followed her.

The group entered the yard where Alison had introduced herself to Mackenzie. They found a clear spot and in a swift, elegant motion, Kerensa's blade flashed from its scabbard. Its curved shape glistened in the morning sun and she angled its tip towards Alison. Alison sighed, stretched a bit, then drew her dagger and took a fighting stance.

"Close your eyes, Master Walker," Kerensa said. Alison stared for a moment and Pete guffawed. However, the seriousness of the request and that dangerous sparkle in Kerensa's eyes was enough for Alison to take this seriously. She slowly closed them. "Now listen, Master Walker. Listen to the voices of those who rest but wish to help."

The breeze blew. The sounds of the yard become clear. Pete's mumblings to Olaf some joke. Olaf's stifled laugh. The shuffle of their feet. Her breath. Then, a whisper suddenly came, urgent and strained.

"Down..! To the right..!"

Alison ducked and her eyes opened. Above her was the curved blade of Kerensa slicing through the air she had just been in. "Dammit!" Alison thought as she was forced to use her blade hand to brace herself. Acting fast, her left leg came up in a kick aimed at Kerensa's head. Eyes widening, Kerensa barely blocked the counterblow with her left arm. Alison carried the momentum over, dodging a follow-up swing and flipping back some distance away into a fighting stance again.

"What had just happened? That voice again..." Alison's mind raced. Her breath was heavy from the shock and sudden excursion. Kerensa's surprised face suddenly turned into a big smile. She sheathed her blade and in a moment of uncharacteristic intimacy, nearly tackled Alison in a hug.

"I knew it! I knew it was you who could learn. So many years, so many months, I was so worried that it had all been for nothing!" Kerensa said, tearing up. The group was shocked. Alison awkwardly put a hand on her back, motioning to Pete to come grab the dagger still clutched in it. Kerensa leaned back, hands on Alison's shoulders. "You, Master Alison Walker, are the inheritor of a legacy. That book you were meant to steal, was something only you could do. No mere petty thief could ever steal it! I thought it was lost. When the family line died out I thought there was no longer that Dormes's blessing would carry on. It was why I joined you on your job back then. I wanted to know if someone, anyone, would free me from the guilt that I couldn't even protect the memory of the house I served, and carry on the blessings of Dormes." Kerensa said, tears now flowing freely down her face.

Alison stared in bewilderment. "Kerensa, calm down. Take it slowly." Alison waited for Kerensa to compose herself. Ever reliable, she quickly seemed to steady herself. Alison moved the group over to a table nearby and sat down. "Okay. Explain. You know I'm not from here. What does it mean?"

Kerensa took a deep breath and nodded. "Listen again to that voice. I'm sure he or she has something to say." Alison sighed and silently sat for a moment listening. The familiar whisper seemed to return faster now.

"Always here. To help. To listen. Never alone, Jane Doe." the voice said. Alison's eyes widened.

"Johnny...? But how..." Alison said quietly. Kerensa nodded.

"I take it he is someone you knew in life but has since passed? What you are hearing is one of the blessings of Dormes. Dormes is the son of Hades, God of the dreamlands, guardian against Nightmares and of the moon." Kerensa said. At this, Olaf shook his head in a huff.

"I don't like it. Dark Domain affinity is dangerous stuff." Olaf said. Pete merely shrugged at this.

"It's no different from a knife like? All about hows yous use it." Pete countered. Kerensa ignored them both and continued.

"These blessings come in many different forms, some manifest as chosen powers granted directly, others are rewarded, but Dormes's domain is dreams. He has always reached his followers in their dreams. Dreams are the space of the soul between life and death, thus the son of death is chosen to protect those soles while they float through those lands. It is why that book disappeared when you grabbed it, Alison. It didn't disappear but entered your soul, your very dream. It is why you have dreamt of it ever since. The other point is this. If Pete, Olaf, or even myself had grabbed that book, we would have at best gone mad, or at worst, closed our eyes and entered a sleep we could never awaken from. Alison, you were different. I don't know how or why, but your mind was able to handle the blessing. Tell me again your dream." Kerensa asked.

"Well, I usually see that book. A page is opened. The paper is blank, and then a pen starts writing on it. It's almost like I'm writing it but not really?" Alison answered with a shrug. Kerensa nodded.

"Your soul is slowly absorbing the power of the tome." Kerensa tapped Alison's Source Crystal. It was always a dark color, ever since she had arrived in this world, but now it had taken on an even darker shade of purple. "The family I served in turn served Dormes. They safeguarded his few teachings as he guarded our dreams. They gathered forbidden knowledge, to keep it out of the hands of dangerous people. This made them a target for many, so I was raised to protect them. But by the time I was ready, they had been wiped out by the war. All that was left was their most valued estate, The Library. I could never hope to enter, so I traveled with you once I found out about the job. I was worried that their most valued book, the Whispers of Dormes, would be lost forever in that accursed place. But... but..."

Kerensa paused for a moment, her hand shaking. She took Alison's hand in hers and smiled sadly. "We fought side by side. All of us. You led us through the horrors that had been unleashed by the seals that had been left broken. When all our minds threatened to fail, you kept us alive through it. That's when I knew you were no mere thief, but someone special. I cannot be happier that you now carry on that blessing. Use it well, Master Walker, and I will stay by your side and protect you as was my duty before."

Alison smiled softly at Kerensa. Olaf nodded confidently and Pete gave his trademark stupid grin. That familiar whisper passed by her ear.

"In good hands..." it said. Alison nodded.

Later that day, around noon

Alison arrived at the Mended Drum, her compatriots in tow behind her. She stared up at the building and took a deep breath. It had already been an emotional day, and now came a new hurdle.

"You sure about this? I don't like you going in alone boss. Zell seemed like a good enough man, but what of his other compatriots? That girl may have been just being nice and singing their praises." Olaf said. Alison shook her head.

"This is something I should take on alone. You guys take up your spots, make keep an eye out for enemy spies and unwanted ears. With such a prominent group gathered in one place, this is our opportunity to catch any unwanted guests who are still in the city. Olaf's up high, Pete, you're working the street, and Kerensa in the alleys." Alison then lowered her voice. "Can I count on you as well?" she whispered.

A whispered response came. "Eyes... up... ears... open..."

Alison looked to the door of the tavern and entered.

Dang, Zell is gonna need a lot of coffee
