Current A Perpetual Motion Engine of Anxiety and Self-Loathing

So there I am, in Sri Lanka, formerly Ceylon, at about 3 o'clock in the morning, looking for one thousand brown M&Ms to fill a brandy glass, or Ozzy wouldn't go on stage that night. So, Jeff Beck pops his head 'round the door, and mentions there's a little sweets shop on the edge of town. So - we go. And - it's closed. So there's me, and Keith Moon, and David Crosby, breaking into that little sweets shop, eh. Well, instead of a guard dog, they've got this bloody great big Bengal tiger. I managed to take out the tiger with a can of mace, but the shopowner and his son... that's a different story altogether. I had to beat them to death with their own shoes. Nasty business, really. But, sure enough, I got the M&Ms, and Ozzy went on stage and did a great show.

Seems friendly. Is polite. Terrified of being truly known by anyone.

David was born the second of four kids in the Fermi household.

The Fermi's lived in a decent sized, two-storey family home in Sunnyside.

David was a happy enough child, his older brother Craig was attending CCSF, and it kept him under their parents' roof. His younger sister Maddie, and their youngest brother Charlie were still attending Sunnyside Elementary.

One night, David's father heard what every parent dreads. A disturbance coming from downstairs, alerted by David's mother, he removed the revolver from the gun locker and began the treacherous trek downstairs.

A scuffle. A single shot rang out. His mother screamed from upstairs and waited, hoping beyond hope that there was some kind of mistake. Her husband would have kicked his toe and the gun accidentally went off, just causing minor damage.

The bullet the intruder put in her head suggested otherwise.

The kids gathered themselves and made for the laundry in the basement, whilst the intruder had gone upstairs. Charlie and Maddie were besides themselves. The home invader had their father's gun now. Craig quickly crossed the floor and made for his old little league baseball bat kept under the stairs, whilst David tried to calm the two younger siblings.

Everything that happened next will be with David forever. The creaking of the steps. Craig jumping from the shadows to swing the bat. The intruder sensing the movement, turning and shooting Craig through the neck. The way Craig fell to the cement basement floor, eyes wide open like so much stunned meat. The bloodshot eyes of the home invader as the gun levelled on the three remaining Fermi kids. David's hands raised in defense of their lives, as if pleading. The way time froze as the gun shot blast. The way the bullet hung in the air. Then flattened and fell to the floor. The dull scraping "Freak." label that left the man's throat, before he turned tail and walked out.

The Fermi kids rushied to Craig's side, trying desperately to stop the bleeding, far too late. Maddie trying to call an ambulance between sobs.

They'd experienced so much that kids never should. The loss of a father. The loss of a mother. A brother murdered before their eyes.

When the crime was reported, the question of how the three survived couldn't properly be answered any way but the truth. The police counted and collected the bullets, and the flattened bullet on the basement floor surrounded by nothing which it could have struck.

David was 'outed'. The "Freak" label which the home invader seemed to brand him with stuck with him amongst his peers. His hair had even changed as if to further mark him. It was as if he was a manhandled baby bird. Isolated and ostracised.

He ensured Maddie and Charlie's safety, having them stay at an aunt's home permanently whilst David continued his life alone, awaiting the inevitable. They changed schools, would get a fresh start.

The letter. He'd been identified as a "Person of Interest" for the Federal Ju-V intervention program.

He packed his possessions, and called the people at the Aegis facility to arrange a pick-up. Lest they dig deeper into him and what remained of his family, who he'd managed to keep safe.

He has surviving family. At the moment he just wants to get through the Ju-V system and out the other side, with the least resistance and divulging the least amount of information about his life as possible, so he can be free to take care of his surviving brother and sister.

Friendly and willing to help with most things, but he will be extremely taciturn with details on his own life, as he looks to protect his surviving family - as the metagene is by definition genetically predisposed and possibly also lies within Maddie and Charlie.

◼ Strategic Thinker | Whilst he was no Bobby Fischer, David was the Captain of the chess club in his Senior year before the tragedy - with an impressive winning record and having never been beaten in fewer than thirty five moves. He also won in-school Risk tournaments and was part of a formative Board Game Club. After winning an in-school Madden tournament, he was encouraged to take part in a Football strategy class by the HS Coach as a favour to his brother Craig (who was the athlete of the family), his breakdown of the West Coast Offense got him an A+... but also stuffed in a locker as it did nothing to improve his relationship with the football team since Craig had left for college.

//LIMITATIONS:
◼ Motion | His forcefields are generally static. It is extremely difficult to create such a structure in motion. It is possible to create a 'clockworks' of force field constructs, but such a thing is beyond his ability to visualise or consider at this point, let alone execute.

◼ Distance | At this point he 'stretches' or 'rolls out' a forcefield from a single point, in a shape like a flat plane, dome, or even sphere. But is limited to being able to originate such a force field from no further than about 5 yards from his person.

◼ Quantity | At this point in time he is limited to creating and holding no more than three force field structures at a time. This is likely to see the most rapid improvement, as he has not tested his own abilities and is thus quite 'unfit' in his use with them.

A still with a Federal Insignia and the words "This video is not for public distribution or release" flashes up and holds for three seconds. Before it disappears just as suddenly.

The static snaps to clarity and a talking head shot of a man with a broad smile in a suit appears.

"Hello. I... am Virgil Rowell, the Director of this Aegis Center, and caretaker for your time and experience within the Ju-V program."

"During this Orientation video, we will walk you through our facilities here at the newly refurbished Alcatraz Island. We trust that you will find them far more comfortable than it's previous tenants historically did..."

Director Rowell gets to his feet, and the camera pans back to sweep and follow him as he walk-and-talks.

"As we leave my desk behind, you'll see we have a number of offices and conference rooms that provide in-house training for our own staff and personnel. To ensure that those teaching, and caring for those under our jurisdiction get the highest quality care and education throughout the process. If we continue, in this direction we'll reach the Staff boarding quarters - many choose to stay at the facility full time, and we provide for that possibilty should it be necessary. In order to preserve their privacy, however, we'll cut away and come back somewhere more appropriate..."

The video hard cuts away, and the footage returns to a clean eating area, kept immaculately.

"This is the canteen. Presently catered for by three Michelin star chef Tony Girelli, as well as a hand-picked staff of his choosing, he's also often aided by many within the program who are working towards their own experience in the culinary field. Tony is currently training young Brian, I believe, in learning 'the pass'. Brian is a metahuman with heightened taste sensory capabilities, and as such, well... at this point my explanation of the reasoning may well be quite redundant."

We see as Brian is carefully watched by the Head Chef, he shakes his head glumly, and the food is returned down the line, as the pair explain what improvements are required.

"As you can see, the utmost care is taken with the quality of food here. Those within the program can be assured three delicious meals, from a handpicked nutrition plan set out by Chef Girelli, and the Mess is also left open between meal hours for any who may have extra food requirements."

The camera pans to show the extensive rows of tables and seating.

"The refurbished facilities have been designed with both comfort and ease-of-cleanliness in mind. Gone are the bolted down tables and steel seating. Now this place walks a more humane path, for how can you expect to create the sensitive people of tomorrow when you treat them like animals today?"

The camera pans back to Virgil, broad smile still pasted upon his face.

"--And with that message in mind, I think it's time we move on to the Boarding facilities..."

Another hardcut, and the Director stands before a cold, solidly built, no-nonsense building.

"Just ahead lie the Residential Quarters for those within the program. Admittedly, from the outside, not particularly inspiring..." The camera sweeps up the stairs, slightly shakily due to no use of dolly cart. Virgil opens the door.

"Two-to-a-room dormitories and with freedom-within-reason to personalize living space, we believe this should provide more than adequate space for personal expression and comfort, during your tenure within the program. These are well stocked technologically, we do expect those staying here to respect the desire for privacy and to be mindful of noise for the sake of their fellow man. Much as you will be in the outside world, the place within these walls is itself a community, and consideration is key."

"Ah... but speaking of technology, and noise, why don't we check in on where those within our program may be having more fun, yes?"

Another hard cut and Virgil is seen outside of another cold, stone, solid building.

"Within these walls is the Recreation wing. If you pan over slightly, you might be able to catch a glimpse of the outdoors sporting field - unfortunately it falls just short of regulation size, due to the size limitations we're working with here on Alcatraz Island. But only by about ten to fifteen yards or so. As such the line marking aren't technically accurate, but just proportionate to the space being worked with. Behind this door, however..." Virgil swings the door open.

"We have a full sized basketball court, also convertible to indoor soccer, badminton, uhh, I'm sure a handfull of other sports that--"

"Pickleball." Comes a voice behind the camera.

"That's right. Pickleball, as well as tennis. Volleyball as well, now it comes to me. As well as gymnastics mats, a climbing wall. As we leave the court itself, though... We have a fully furnished gym. Both free weights and resistance machines. Ah... now a restriction - hate that word, but it needs to be said. We do expect NEW people within the program to use the resistance machines until they've demonstrated an adequate understanding of how to safely use the free weights. We would like to keep people out of the infirmary as much as possible. We also have a half-length lap-pool, a dive-pool - again, some restriction on the higher boards, for newcomers. As well as spa, sauna and even steam room facilities. For the sake of the camera, we'll expect you to trust us on that without going in. Oh... around the OTHER side of this wing there is the recreational library, well stocked with novels appropriate for all ages and stages of development, uhh-- we're also very fortunate that a local comics store in San Francisco donate graphic novels about three to six months after their sale date, for no charge. Also in the rec library, there's a revolving catalogue of movies and video games which can be borrowed for three days to a week at a time. I left that out before, the dormitory facilities have some capabilities to play games in communal areas and we have a small Federally approved in-house streaming selection called Juiced-V. But the Recreational Library allows for a wider selection, and also the capability of borrowing for more private usage, beyond just the common rooms." The same broad smile.

"But enough fun and games..."

Another hard cut, and we're taken to outside of yet another no-nonsense cold, stone building.

"Behind these walls we have the Educational Wing, we attempt to provide all within the program a baseline of maintaining current High School pass-level education, and generally aim to far surpass that level. Last census, I believe we had a 97% pass rate, and 85% received acceptances for further college education for once they left these walls. Beyond which we are particularly proud of our Philosophy and Ethics classes, where the youth of today become prepared to face and answer the big questions and dilemmas faced by those with their capabilities."

Panning back to Virgil's everpresent smile.

"This of course is for dealing with the theoretical knowledge of the youth of today..."

Another hard cut and we find ourself outside of a larger, more modern looking building. Still cold and concrete in appearance.

"--But behind these doors, lies the Heuristics Wing. In here we have the most bleeding edge technology for the training purposes of metahumans that currently exists. Here is where your practical knowledge and skills with your own personal powersets will be tested, to allow those within the program to come to terms with the limits of their own capabilities in a relatively safe, constantly supervised environment. Now because there's always limitations to just how safe such an environment can be, this building is also where the facility's infirmary is located, but that also makes it centrally located for any other health related issues which may occur across the facility. Now, due to the fact that we treat the powers of those within our facility as personal information, combined with the large amount of Aegis-owned proprietary technology, we won't be going in there for this video."

"You can save that experience for your first session." Virgil's broad smile flashes once more.

Another hard cut.

"And finally, here we have the Research Wing. Not a daily experience for the teaching staff or those within the program. This is where additional focus and understanding about the data collected regarding your powersets can be shared and understood. Occasionally teaching staff will be brought in to better understand the parameters and capabilities of those under their supervision. General research is undertaken by many of the leading scientists, not merely from the West Coast, but across the world entire, as they look to answer meaningful questions about what we are all ultimately doing here. Finding ways to better understand the metahuman condition. Because only in understanding can peace be acheived."

An awkwardly hard cut and we find Virgil Rowell back behind his desk in the Director's office.

"So with that we hope this orientation video has answered a few of your questions, and perhaps even addressed some prior concerns, about your upcoming tenure in the Aegis-operated Ju-V program located here in San Francisco. We look forward to meeting you in person, and hope we can learn much from one another."

The video ends sharply.

We live in a volatile world.

Recently, the exact date is open to debate, we have passed the Claremont Threshold.

The point where all government projections, every simulation suggests that all out war between humanity and metahumans - the powered people amongst us - could ONLY end in human annihilation.

As a result, all Government policy must shift. With the focus going from repression and keeping down the metahumans, to that of de-escalation, and appeasement, lest they rise up and seek war and retribution over an unfair system.

But what of the humans? The humans who still hold simmering tension with the metahumans, stoked by years of back-biting politics, the humans who still FAR outnumber metahumans at the ballot box? Policy positions from a flip-flopping Government can be swift. Shifting an entire society away from harmful negative sentiment? Not so much.

So the language of Government remains a buffer. Letting more strident sentiments still hold their belief that the government is cracking down on 'the Metahuman problem' whilst the policies themselves shift to be less harmful to these once systemically opressed people.




Welcome to the Junior Vigilante Programme at the Aegis Centre for Metahuman Rehabilitation, your foundation for societal reintegration and moral education. In a world where your very existence creates a conflicted and turbulent cultural debate, we at Aegis wish to offer you peaceful respite, and the opportunity to understand your place in the world and the wider impact your very nature has on society.

We understand that the public reaction to the emergence of Metahumans has created civil unrest on all sides of the issue; Aegis stands in defense of you, and wants to provide a safe place to learn, practice, and discuss the moral implications of what your abilities can do for Mankind.

Whether you have joined us voluntarily or been invited, we welcome you through our gates, and hope your residence here proves fruitful for you and our ongoing exploration into what it means to be Metahuman.

Rules


[1.1] - Whilst I'm not holding anyone to a specific Character Sheet format. Incomplete or in progress sheets should not be posted in the OOC outside of Hider tags, and ABSOLUTELY should not be posted in the character tab. If a Character Sheet is completed after being added to the OOC In Progress, remove the hider tags and announce that it has since been completed to the GM for review.

[1.2] - Completed sheets are to be posted in the Out of Character Thread for review until approved. Once approved you may move your sheet into the Character Thread for storage.

[2.1] - Sheets will be reviewed and accepted/denied within 24 hours of a posted completed sheet in most instances. Please try to understand that in the event of numerous character sheets being submitted in the same day or due to obligations or circumstances outside of the guild, there may be minor delays.

[2.2] - In the event of a reasonable delay, any displays of impatience towards the GMs will be met with dickishness and ridicule. The GM lives for these moments. He is a bastard and his rudeness knows no bounds when provided the circumstances to let it off the leash unfettered.

[3.1] - Respect the Game Master. The GM's word is to be adhered to; don't argue or disregard it unnecessarily. If the GM asks you to stop doing something please stop. Likewise if a GM asks you to change something in your post please do. The GM or Moderator reserves the right to boot you from the game. But let's be honest... he'll probably move to dickishness and ridicule first. As is his way, as is his right.

[3.2] - Respect the other players. Constructive criticism is fine, but flaming or trying to run players off just because you don't like the way they do things is not okay. Remember, it's the GM's job, not yours, to point out if there's a problem. If you feel that there is a problem, then contact the GM directly. In all cases understand that it is the GMs role to understand and prescribe the correct amount of dickishness and ridicule. People please, leave it to the expert.

[3.3] - Likewise any quarrels will be dealt with by the GM. Don't take them out in the OOC, arguments should be dealt with between the two parties through private messaging. If the involved parties truly can't solve their issues the GM can act as an arbiter upon request. The GM reserves the right to conk both parties heads together like Moe from the Three Stooges. Some eye-poking may be part of the process.

[4.1] - Absolutely no 'OOC' chatter in the In Character Thread. If you have a question or anything to explain there is an Out Of Character Thread provided. You have no excuse to make an 'OOC' comment in the IC and if done it will be heavily frowned upon.

[5.1] - If you find yourself in a plot with another player and they disappear, do your best to move on without them and quickly finish the arc to the best of your ability, or ask for the help of the GM.

[6.1] - No God-Modding or metagaming. This refers to controlling or manipulating another player's character in way that is completely self-beneficial and not pre-approved by the other player. This also includes being untouchable against NPC characters as well as being all knowing.

[7.1] - This is a Character Driven RP, and as such you are encouraged and expected to take charge of your character's sub-plots and storylines. This is a favourite rule of mine, and that said, there will be a heavy emphasis on collaborative activities and team building as well. The GM will be leading the RP in the traditional sense with a driving plot and will ensure the RP keeps moving however I do want to see you develop your characters and produce your own plots. However we don't want to see you lock your character out of interaction and focus solely on your character and their 'world'. No one enjoys watching you play with yourself, it's always better to let someone else join in on the fun. Incessantly playing with self, or rubbing self on the carpets may result in squirting with a water bottle by the GM.

[8.1.] - Player Characters are not to be killed without permission nor that player's supporting cast members. It is fine to kill nameless NPC's, but PC's or important NPC's will require authorization by their creator except in the event of a GM event.

My intention is to get the Zero Post done, and the Game thread up today. Hopefully in the time the wee one goes down for a nap in around... OOo... three or four hours.

So, if we can decide on a setting city by then - at this point, it's seeming like Alcatraz Island and San Francisco is the way to go.
