Time: Evening
Location: Sorian Park Dinner Under Fireworks
Interactions: [@Reuseable Sword] Roman, @Mole Prince Felix, @Conscripts John, @Helo Leo @JJ Doe Fritz
Aesthetic: Dress, Hair, Flower Crown, Purple Flats

Finally, it was evening! Sadie hummed to herself as she observed her event. When she heard there would be fireworks, she jumped into the air with a yell of joy. Fireworks were gorgeous! This would be the perfect opportunity to meet up with the Varians. Princess Sadie's guests would have no trouble finding her. She assembled the largest collection of picnic blankets in the park. They were laid out in a large square neatly on a small hill near the front of the park, to the side, creating a cozy and inviting seating area. Alongside the blankets, she had also brought an ample supply of plush pillows and an array of delicious food. She had bought food from all the stands at the festival (and subsequently, emptied all of them so the stall owners pockets were full). While Sadie waited, she had all the food set up in tiny baskets. There were several types of refreshments, such as water, wine, beer and fruit juice. Now, all that was left was for her guests to arrive. She played with the fabric of her dress and adjusted her pink floral crown. Every few minutes she glanced around with anticipation.

Count Calbert Damian & Countess Liliane Damien & ???

Location: Damien Estate
Time: 6pm
Soundtrack:Click here

"Honey, I'm home."

Calbert had lifted his head sharply, unburying his face from his trembling palms. The voice of his beloved wife was unmistakable, but he felt as if he had been dreaming. He had been sitting on the piano bench of his foyer for an hour now. No one had dared to disturb him. She was one of the last voices he had expected to hear in the silence as he had thought she was taking a carriage back to Montauppe. With a pounding heart, he turned towards the massive doors that creaked open loudly, revealing two female silhouettes standing against the starry night sky. Their outlines were bathed in the gentle glow of moonlight, casting an ethereal aura around them. Calbert's breath caught as he strained to make out their features, his heart racing with anticipation and fear of the unknown.

His heart skipped a beat as his gaze remained locked on the haunting presence behind Liliane, even as she stepped forward, her smile a beacon of light in the darkness, her face finally exposed to the warm flicker of the nearby candlelight. For a moment, Calbert was momentarily distracted by the sight of his wife, but his eyes wandered back to the figure behind her.

It was then her beautiful face consumed his vision. A gentle hand fell on his cheek, tilting his face toward hers. “Calbert dear, “Liliane said softly. “Look at me.”

“Lily… Who’s with you?” His mouth felt dry as he had managed the question. The countess stroked his cheek, applying the slightest pressure to keep him from looking over her head.

“We’ll get to that.”She said with a smile, “Talk to me first. I’ve heard a lot has happened today…” Her head tilted with curiosity as she considered her thoughts, “For example, you have a son and he has returned to you.”

“Yes.”Calbert confessed with a sigh, “I had a wife before you as we had once discussed. She had borne us a son but I never had the pleasure of meeting him… Now his mother has passed and he’s come to find me... I hope this doesn’t alarm you.” But as he had gazed down with his wife, he realized she had seemed rather pleasant in her demeanor. Liliane was no longer torn by grief as she had been this morning. She was calm and composed. His eyes trailed to look behind her once again but a feeling of dread filled his gut.

Lily turned his face once more, “I think that’s wonderful. I always wanted a strong son that could protect our sweet girls. I do hope he’ll stay with us as I’m more than thrilled to meet him.” He found himself surprised, though he knew he shouldn’t have been. Liliane had rarely shown anger and she had always been on the understanding side.

“I’m glad… I suppose I’m curious to know him, but I wish that both of our…” His voice drew off softly and he could no longer ignore the presence in the doorway. This time, his wife moved her hand off his cheek. The being was motionless, their silhouette stark against the backdrop of the Damien home, reminiscent of a mannequin. Their fingers were interlocked in front of a black laced dress, and their pale skin reflected a ghostly sheen in the moonlight.

Calbert's mouth parted. His voice trembled as he spoke, barely able to form the words. "Is that... I-Is that-..." He took a hesitant step forward, desperate for a clearer view, but as he caught sight of her, his expression crumbled.

The figure shifted ever so slightly as Calbert approached. Not a single word was spoken, only the soft expulsion of air from their lungs.

The moon shifted slowly, exposing more of what stood in the doorframe. Their eyes opened slowly as they came into view, revealing a pair of red orbs that seemed to lock on his. The moonlight exposed the details of the gown, made of black silks with intricately stitched lace that overlaid the fabric. A black corset with red thread embordering the bodice with ravens that were so carefully stitched into the design.

"We arrived home later than expected, but I hope this would have been worth the wait." Lilane smiled at her husband before looking at the woman beside her. She reached up and put a comforting hand on the figure's back. “ Go on, you can say hello,” The countess encouraged her with a smile.

The figure moved in reaction to the touch, flinching as if they were in some kind of pain but not enough that anyone would likely take notice. As the light slowly crept more over the figure, a set of pale red lips spread softly showing her teeth in a forced smile. A soft voice, almost like a whisper, broke the silence.

“Good evening father,“ The voice was vacant of any emotion.

Her name subsequently left his lips in a breath. Calbert stepped forward with the expression of one who had seen a ghost. At that moment, the count thought he literally may have. He stepped forward and gradually moved his trembling hands toward her shoulders. There was hesitancy as if he were afraid she’d disintegrate underneath his fingertips. “...Is this real? … You’re really here?” He wore a countenance of mixed emotions, a smile tugging slowly at his lips.

Her face would be familiar but different. Her soft skin adorning a large gash that has scared over. The trail started from the top of her forehead down the bridge for her nose and fading out from under her eye. Her face seemed paled and empty, with her eyes void of any emotion or feeling. Her face was framed with long black locks that were curled loosely around her , laying over her shoulders and falling down the front of her bodice.

The eyes that had bore into his so steadily had been the eyes of a stranger. They stirred something deep within him, unsettling him like a worm wriggling in the dirt when she had spoken. When she had spoken, he had felt a surge of emotion that had driven him to pull her into a hug, a desperate attempt to hold on to the daughter he thought he had lost. His arms had wrapped around her in a gentle grip, but as he realized she wouldn’t crumble, the hug tightened.

“My little girl.” He whispered finally.

“It’s okay. It’s still her.” Liliane’s warm voice was close as her hand fell on her husband’s back.

Warm and long arms wrapped tightly around her thin frame, her body tensing at the touch as she stood still. Her arms pushed into her body more as he hugged her tighter, her breath being squeezed from her lungs. The touch was painful, like tiny needles being pricked all over her skin. She didn’t react or touch him back, she simply stood there.

“I am not feeling well,” She said, her voice raspy from the reaction to the pain. “Would it be alright If I retire to my room?”

“Not at all dear.”Liliane replied with a smile meanwhile Calbert’s arms fell to his sides.

She didn’t react or respond, she simply started to walk inside heading to where her feet were taking her, unsure if it was even the right direction. Her mind was so foggy her thoughts felt like distant memories that she could see but couldn’t reach. Her body seemed to know where to go, so she simply trusted in that fact.

“She doesn’t know.” She mouthed, positioned outside of her daughter's vision.

“Lily…”Calbert began then added softly, “...We need to talk about this.”

Reaching for the handle to her room, her fingers gripped around the cold steel she turned and pushed inwards opening the door to her bedroom.

Walking inside she simply continued towards a large chair, it had a high back with black fabrics and gold trim. A book was opened on the seat from the last page she had read. Lifting it up into her hands she sat in the chair and stared back at the door to her room.

Roman listened to the man intently not just because he didn’t want to be rude but he was interested in what the man was saying. It was good to hear that his representative was okay but he almost missed the subtlety in his voice, it could have been a misunderstanding but came across as slight worry. The land he spoke of sounded like a very diverse island people it also seemed that the individual islands or people had specific jobs, he could be wrong but it all sounded very interesting way of governing. This was definitely a place he would like to visit some day and would have to push Erik to build friendly relations with them.

“That way of leadership sounds like a council, we have something similar for my people not the kingdom. We have a Thing, brings all the chiefs in to discuss grievances and politics ruled over by my father Count Erick Ravenwood, occasionally the Queen will gather the heads of the nobility’s households and discuss kingdom wide policy.”

Roman looked back out to the arena and noticed that many were shuffling out and the applause and cheers had gone quiet. The nobility and royalty had also left with the fighters as well. It would seem that the two of them got here towards the end of the match today and that the arena decided to host the fights over several days which was fair but he believed it was to rake in addition revenue and not for the benefit of the fighters. The lord stood brushing his clothes off and turned back to Sjan-dehk.

“It does look like we arrived at the end of the match, you can walk with me still I was going to go to the tough tavern down by the slums for singing and drinks. You’re welcome to join me. I’ll make sure to get word of your Lady Adiyan to the queen as well.” Pausing for a moment to look around and start heading towards the exit now that most people had left. “if they are leaving tonight I will be sure to try to get them to set up a meeting at the Varian coastal city they will depart from for your own meeting.”

His smile didn’t fade and this one seemed truthful enough that he didn’t come off as some strange over the top assassination plan from one of the other kingdoms or enemies. He came off as a little aloof but mostly because of this being a new place for him. Different people, different foods, different culture, and language. He was familiar with the feeling traveling to new places was part of his job too. Roman believed that was why he was being so open and comfortable with this outlander.

He was pulled from his thoughts when a messenger approached him, “I've been looking for you. Got something I'm supposed to deliver - your hands only.” Pausing for a moment to dig through a leather satchel, “Let's see here... A note from someone named Calcelmo, in Markarth?” holding the note in his hand for a moment then putting it back, “Sorry that was not the right one, ahh yes, It's from... Princess Sadie Camilia at Sorian Park? You've got friends in high places." Roman took the flowery and colorful letter from the man with a puzzled look. “Important deliveries to make! No time for chatting!" the strange courier turned and quickly left leaving the bewildered lord with the note from Sadie.

Not caring if his new friend could read it, the giant read it to himself then folded the note and placed it back in his pocket. “Well friend it was a pleasure talking to you I do hope we can meet again in the future. It seems I have been summoned by the princess. You are welcome to come to the Sorian park and join us if you like.” Pausing for a moment to pull an intricately decorated silver disk with the symbol for house Ravenwood etched into it. “If you happen to see any vendors with this symbol give this to them and they will give you any one thing in their inventory to you for free, think of it as a gift from my people to yours or from me to you, whichever you like.

Farim

Location: Guest House Bedroom -> Dining Room
Time: 6pm
Mentions: Ariella@Tpartywithzombi

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Farim had made his way to the guest house after the events at the tavern, smirking to himself about what hi-jinx that his bird Thara would get into. He trusted her to carry out his secret little task and get out unnoticed, and would likely see the results later on in the evening. For now, he had to prepare himself for dinner. He approached a nearby servant, a man by the name of Tariq, and requested a few items sent to his chambers promptly. He closed his door and set his outfit onto his bed, slowly undressing himself and setting his worn clothes to hang on a nearby collapsable clothes hangar he had brought from back home.

A few short knocks sounded at the door, prompting Farim to answer. He stood away from the door and cracked it just enough for Tariq to see his face and slide the bowl and its contents to him. "Thank you, my friend. Here, for your troubles." He gave the man a gold coin and took the bowl. Inside the ceramic dish were small bits of resin, some powdered sugar, and dehydrated strawberries. He got to work, mixing the ingredients in a crude fashion before setting the bowl back down. He went back to the door, peeking out as he cracked it open slightly to make sure the coast was clear. He closed and locked the door behind him, his fingers snapping together as he silently muttered the word for flame in his native tongue "Lahab!" The word was barely above a whisper, not wanting to be seen practicing magic so boldly like this. He placed the flames into the bowl and let the ingredients light before whispering a soft chant while he held his necklace in his hands.

"May the forces that separated you now bind you. The world itself made of so many parts, now made whole. May this exchange be equal, through and through. To the scales of alchemy I render these materials, and for the fuel, I give my soul." The crystal went from a dim glow to a bright glow to a blinding glow of light as the spell began to take form. The flame licked away the ingredients and behind it left a few small pieces of neatly packed resin squares colored pink like the strawberries he had placed in the bowl. He took one of the pieces of resin and popped it into his mouth like candy and began to chew. Feels a bit excessive to get gum this way but all those damned stores were closed. He simply wanted to mask the odor of alcohol on his breath, because despite being sober he knew his family would smell the sour stench of his shots earlier and accuse him of being drunk. He chewed on it for a few moments as he got into his new attire. Then, a few short knocks at the door nearly sent him out of his clothes.

He quickly turned on his heels, unlocking and opening the door to see Tariq again. "Forgive me, sir. But there is a Lady Edwards here to see you." Farim would nod, and talk with an excited smile. "Oh she is a friend I met today, she will be joining me for dinner. I will join her in just a moment, you may let her know!" He quickly closed the door once more, getting himself in proper order and dress for the upcoming dinner. His turban neatly tucked his hair away and matched the clothes he wore, with a small ruby embezzled into the front of it. He wanted to be flashy, but not so much that it would outdo whatever it is the Sultan may be wearing.

He spat the magically spawned gum out from his mouth and into a nearby bin for trash before breathing into his palm to check his breath. Not your best, but it'll have to do. He walked down the hall and walked into the main hall where his newly met friend would be waiting. He took a moment's pause to admire her gown, nodding in approval as he slowly approached her. "Ariella, I am glad to be seeing you! I do hope ..." He paused before coughing slightly to stop himself. "..things went well?" He would pause as he walked close, offering a long bow as he bent forward at his waist. He righted his posture and held a hand out to her. "If you would prefer to speak on it later that is also okay. I do believe dinner will be started soon."

Violet couldn't get much rest. Her mind was so foggy. She felt like she was on a wooden boat, sailing in the middle of blackened waters—the sky above her was black, void of any stars or signs of life. The water reflected the dark sky as the mist formed around the boat, floating above the black liquid as she continued to move forward. Or was she moving at all?

She sat in her chair, her eyes void of any emotion. She was existing.

She looked over to the left then the right. Scanning the room that felt familiar yet different all at the same time. Pieces of her furniture had been covered with sheets to protect them from dust. Her room used to be filled with so much life but now it was simply a place that her parents had preserved. They didn't have time to prepare it for her, so it simply felt like she was sitting in a museum of her belongings. The only thing that they had done was removed all the mirrors at her mother's request. She would not be allowed to see herself, not until she was fully healed.

Violet didn't understand what her mother was speaking about. She wasn't aware of any reason why but truthfully her mind was so clouded that she didn't remember much. The faces of people were blurred and fuzzy, she couldn't quite make out who or what they were. She just felt a familiarity with the voice she heard, trusting in her instincts that the woman she met was her mother.

The sounds of fireworks echoed in her room, and the large noises of exploding stars captured her attention. Looking up and out her window she saw the bright colors off in the distance. It was the only thing that drew her out of the misted waters of her mind.

Leaving the estate Violet made sure to inform one of the workers who was instructed to care for her that she would be going for an evening walk in the park. Violet also instructed her mother to be notified as well, so she wouldn't worry. She had to listen to her panicked voice the whole carriage ride back to the estate, going on and on about how relieved she was. Although Violet didn't remember much of anything, it couldn't have been that bad, it wasn't as if she had gone missing or died. She was right there.

Trying to not fester on the unknown she took a carriage over to Sorian Park arriving just in time as another set of fireworks was sent off into the air. Stepping out of the carriage she felt a sudden rush, she gripped tightly onto the side of the carriage as her vision and mind tilted and spun. Closing her eyes she held a hand over her ears as the sudden noise of all the people overwhelmed her senses. She reached inside the carriage with a shaken hand and grabbed a long ornate cane that her mother had given her. She pulled it out and used it to steady herself. She wasn't sure why she needed it but it certainly did help.

After a few moments of rest, the sense of spinning had slowed to a simple sway. She could feel eyes on her but she did not pay attention. Using the cane she started to take a few steps, slowly moving at first until she found her stride. She decided it best to walk slowly, counting each step as she took one. Her eyes opened now, the world around her so unusual. Faces still were as if someone smeared their appearance, she could tell they were people but they were simply blocks and shapes of colors and shadows. The lights were bright, appearing like stars with long streaks of colors exploding from their centers.

Taking each step slowly she continued to walk, her eyes darting each time to the sky as she watched the lights explode. The colorful stars twinkled in the darkness and faded out until there was nothing left. Crowds of people moved around her, paying her no mind. The blurs of faces and people createing a sense of unease.

Time: 12 Days Ago
Location: On The Road to Sorian
Interaction: N/A

The moonlight from above reflected in the sanguine puddle that was spreading across the dirt road. The only sounds that could be heard were that of the wind and the occasional, labored breaths of the man lying in the shallow pool of crimson. The man’s breaths grew fewer and farther between as each exhale threatened to be his last. His eyes were still open…staring at the sky above with tears pouring down the sides of his head and onto the dirt below. Words were beyond him now as he was fading by the second. From a few feet away, a third sound emerged; the sound of a song.

“May your dreams bring you peace in the darkness… May you always rise over the rain… May the light from above, always lead you to love… May you stay in the arms of the angels.”

The singing man’s face was being obscured by the shadows cast in the moonlight, but his voice rang out in the night confidently. It wasn’t a perfect singing voice, but it was beautiful all the same. In the man’s hands there was an ax covered in blood. As he sang his mother’s song he began to clean the blood off of his weapon with a burlap rag…taking slow steps towards the bleeding man as he did so. His singing continued.

“May you always be brave in the shadows… 'Til the sun shines upon you again… Hear this prayer in my heart, and we'll ne'er be apart… May you stay in the arms of the angels”

Kneeling down at the dying man’s side, Cassius placed the bloody rag on the man’s chest as he finished the song and then fastened his ax back to his belt.

“My mother would sing me that song when I was scared.” Looking down at the man, he smiled genuinely at the man lying in a pool of his own blood.

“I imagine that in this moment you are rather scared yourself.” Cassius reached down and wiped the tears from the man’s eyes.

“Just remember, stranger… You chose this. You and your friends made a choice when you robbed this caravan. You made a choice when you threatened that little girl. Now, the caravan is back on its way and your friends aren’t with us anymore.” He breaks eye contact with the man long enough to look around the road at the three other bodies lying still in their own bloody puddles.

“It’s just you and me now, stranger. Time to live with the choices you made while you can… Because I’m afraid there’s not much time for you left.” He smirks. “I saw to that myself.” Cassius lies down next to the him, not concerned with the fact that the man’s blood is now staining his clothes. “There are worse final sights than the stars and the moon…that’s for sure. You know, you might not think so but you are the lucky one here. You get to die and see what happens next. I, however, have far too much left to do in this broken world to die now. I’m just getting started.”

Ríoghnach "Riona"
Time: 6PM
Location: Guest House Dining Room
Interaction: Leo @Helo

Screw the f**king Gods, Riona thought when she discovered who the attendees were. Of course, they chose her out of all the servants, as extra help for the Alidasht dinner. And of course, the Shehzadi (who might’ve recognized her), the Prince (whom she called a monster to his face), and godsdamn Sh*tlord had to be present. Fan-f**king-tastic.

Best-case scenario, the dinner would end without anyone noticing her. It wasn’t impossible: Riona could’ve been wrong about Shehzadi Mayet recognizing her at the contest; Prince Auguste shouldn’t be able to identify her as long as she didn’t speak around him; and the Lordling probably didn’t have the brain capacity to remember the faces of “nobodies.” Worst-case scenario, Riona’s name would replace Darryn’s in Lady Morrigan’s notebook.

But, since Riona wasn’t allowed to have nice things today, the best-case scenario ran straight out the door the second Lordling Smithwood waltzed in and recognized her. Because of course, he f**king does.

Riona kept her face neutral, not bothering to plaster a polite smile, fighting the urge to scowl. She had to act like a proper servant, after all, and she couldn’t afford to give herself away with Shehzadi Mayet and Prince Auguste close by. “Good evening, Lord Smithwood.” She bowed as she had been trained to do. “Please follow me to your seat.” Riona promptly escorted the Lordling to his seat and pulled out the chair for him.

Oh, and how much she wanted to wipe that smug smile off his face as he strutted over. He clearly relished seeing the rude servant put in her place, serving him (her so-called “better”) without complaint or defiance. Maybe it wasn’t too late to make a quick trip to the stables and grab a handful of manure.

Since that wasn’t an option, Riona improvised.

Just as Lordling Smithwood was about to take his seat, instead of pushing the chair in, the maid pulled it back. Even though she didn’t pull the chair away far enough for his a** to drop to the floor, it still caused him to lose his balance. She hid her amusement as he flailed briefly to regain his balance and, later, his composure. When he shot her a glare, Riona “coughed” and left him to attend to the other guests.

Time: 4pm
Location: Her bedroom

After stumbling back to her chambers, the princess practically collapsed onto her bed, her body crashing down onto the soft mattress with a heavy thud. Anastasia hadn’t even bothered to close the door behind her, too lost in her own turmoil to care about the world outside. Burying her face in her pillow, she had longed to cry, to release the pent-up emotions that threatened to overwhelm her.

The effects of the alcohol and whatever Darryn had given her were taking a negative toll on her at this point, leaving her feeling drained and depleted. Her body felt weak, her muscles ached, and her head throbbed with persistent pain. The haze that had clouded her judgment was lifting, and she was left with a stark realization of the consequences of her actions.

Servants were peering through the opening doorway. They had remained where they were, unsure of how to comfort the wayward princess. They had seen her in similar states before, but it never got any easier to witness. They exchanged worried glances, their hearts heavy with concern for her well-being.

Unfortunately, they hadn’t been the only ones to notice her tumultuous entrance.

Anastasia looked up at the sound of Alibeth's voice, her eyes red and puffy from crying. Alibeth's words hit her like a sharp slap, and she winced at the accusatory tone.

"Anastasia, what is going on?" Alibeth's voice echoed in the room as she entered the doorway, her expression a mix of concern and frustration. "Where have you been all day?" She demanded, her voice tinged with impatience.

Anastasia's voice was muffled as she spoke, her face still buried in her pillow. "... How could you have them hurt Darryn?" she asked, her words choked with emotion. "You knew it was my fault, so why not just have me tortured instead? Why did you blame him?" Her voice cracked, and she finally raised her head, tears streaming down her cheeks.

“Anastasia!” Alibeth's voice rose in pitch, a rare display of surprise from her. She waved off the servants who had gathered, dismissing them with a flick of her hand, and closed the door behind her as she approached Anastasia. “Do you honestly believe we’d consider having you tortured? When she did not answer, Alibeth clenched her fists. “I am growing weary of this behavior… I give you and Callum everything I can. Everything I do is for your benefit yet you act as if I am the evil storybook villain.”

Anastasia's anger flared, and she rose from the bed, wiping her tears away. "For our benefit?" she repeated incredulously, gripping her head in frustration. . "Dragging our friend scarred from the torture you ordered on him, out for Callum and me to see, was for our benefit? And then you told us you were going to kill him to appease some stupid sultan? How am I supposed to believe that you're prioritizing us?"

Alibeth's tone remained cold as she responded, "...It was never my intention to hurt you. I had to rectify the mess that you and Callum created and make sure no one called for your heads on a stick. Going to war with the Alidasht would not have been in our favor if perchance they had called for that, Anastasia. It may be difficult for you to believe, but needless loss of life is never my intent. As representatives of our kingdom, your actions reflect not only on yourselves but also on Wulfric, Auguste, and all of us. It is imperative that you conduct yourselves with decorum and maturity. This behavior must come to an end."

The queen then looked at Anastasia with a piercing gaze. "I urge you to understand the gravity of your actions and the consequences they may entail. It is not a matter of prioritizing one individual over another, but rather ensuring the well-being of our kingdom as a whole.”

” I know the fucking gravity of my actions! I’ve screwed everything up, okay! …I get it. But so did you, mother. Darryn is just somewhere out there alone and he has completely lost his mind and he hates me because I made him take the carriage there and Callum hates me-”

"Oh no. You didn’t make him do anything.” Anastasia stared at her with confusion. “...Darryn is working under Marek Delronzo. Anastasia, he’s a traitor. The queen watched her expression become that of disbelief. It wasn't difficult to see that her daughter had clearly recognized the name. Alibeth didn't have concrete proof that Darryn was working for Marek specifically, but she felt confident enough in her assumption to use it as a basis for seeking further confirmation of the name.

“I told you I do not just order the death without reason. He is an unfortunate puppet to this Marek… There’s a reason he came back with just a few scars, my dear, and I’m sure you can imagine.” Her tone was a bit icy now with the girl.

Anastasia remained unsure if she believed her mother's words, but she was fixated on the fact that her mother had confirmed Marek's name. “So… Darryn was the one who told you Marek’s name…? “

“No… We obtained the name through someone else, and it was not Callum either. Nonetheless, it matters not, you still must stay away from Marek and Darryn henceforth. ”

Anastasia's emotions boiled over with that remark. ”... Get out of my room. Alibeth scowled deeply at her, but when the queen did not move, Anastasia pressed on. “I said get out!”

Alibeth observed the tears streaming down her face. Her eyes were red and unfocused, her skin pale and clammy. It wasn’t hard to tell that the girl was also inebriated. She sighed. With that, her mother had turned on her feet and paused at the door. Anastasia had reburied herself and pulled the blanket over her head. The queen’s expression softened out of view.

Alibeth stood in the hall, her frustration palpable, mirroring the turmoil Anastasia had felt.

“Your Majesty, if I may offer some counsel?”

The voice didn't make her turn her head, but she did lift her eyes. For a fleeting moment, she felt the impulse to reprimand the maid for overstepping her bounds. How dare she eavesdrop!

Yet, as Alibeth reined in her temper, she realized she did want input, especially from someone who spent more time with her daughter than she did. “Very well.”

The woman came forward and told her somberly, “If you do not approach your daughter with more empathy, you are going to lose her.” Alibeth’s eyes flashed with indignation, but the maid continued, “It was only last night she returned in such a disarray you thought you might lose her yet here she is again already in a sorry state… It’s been every other night she disappears somewhere, seeking out types of comfort that she should not. If you push her further, I fear she might run away or worse. Try to see the world from her eyes instead of your own.”

She flinched, bracing herself for a stern reply. However, to her surprise, Alibeth gave her a nod and a wave. “You're dismissed.” The maid then left the woman to think about how she could possibly relate to such an emotional and childish princess.

Time: 5:30pm → 5:50pm
Location: Her bedroom

Anastasia's eyes fluttered open at the first sound of pecking against her window, and she initially dismissed it as a groggy dream. But as the tapping grew louder and more persistent, she jolted awake, her heart racing with surprise and curiosity. She sat up in bed, rubbing her eyes, and that's when she saw it - the falcon outside her window with beautiful feathers and sharp, piercing eyes.

Thara, Farim’s pet Falcon.

The memory of Thara's striking appearance and mysterious presence flooded her mind, and she couldn't believe that the falcon was now here, pecking at her window. With a rush of excitement, she hurried over to the window and opened it, and Thara hopped onto her arm with a caw, as if recognizing her.

“What are you doing here, silly?” Anastasia asked softly, running a hand gently over the bird's smooth feathers, a smile slowly spreading across her face. "Well, I know you're far from your master, but I'll take good care of you for now until I can bring you back home to him."

With that, she gave Thara a kiss on the head and carefully moved over to a T-shaped jewelry stand. She carefully removed some of the jewelry from it, creating a perfect perch for Thara. The falcon settled onto it comfortably. After that moment, Anastasia had left the room. She returned a bit later with some ground beef to feed Thara and spent the next thirty minutes with her. Though she still felt a little on the ill and tired side, the presence of the bird seemed to be distracting her for the time being.

It was almost 6 pm when her mother returned. “Anastasia…?” When she had heard no response, she had pressed her ear to the door. The sound of a cello could be heard. Concerned, she pressed her ear to Anastasia's bedroom door, and to her surprise, she heard the melodies of a cello playing from within. The music resonated through the door, filling the air with its enchanting notes. She slowly opened the door to the view of her daughter seated with her cello. This was a familiar sight certainly, but the presence of the falcon perched nearby watching with keen interest was strange. Despite the initial criticism that rose in her throat, Alibeth took a deep breath and swallowed it down with her willpower. She slowly shut the door behind her, stepping closer to her daughter and the falcon.

Pressing her hands together, Alibeth approached. “You’ve built a rather lovely skill for yourself, Anastasia.”

The music almost slowed to a halt. Anastasia clenched her jaw and decided to play louder in an attempt to drown out her voice.

Alibeth sighed, her eyes narrowing slightly as she noticed her daughter's resistance to her comment. The blonde met her mother's eyes defiantly as the volume of the cello music increased, drowning out any chance of conversation. "Sorry, I've reached a crescendo in the music, mother!" Anastasia called out bitterly, her fingers moving deftly across the cello strings, pouring her frustration into the instrument.

”Not cute.” Alibeth retorted lamely and moved over to finally grip the bow in her hand, halting her. Anastasia glared up at her initially. “Can we try again?”

This caught her off guard. “You mean you want to talk to me.”

Alibeth’s eye twitched slightly and she forced a smile, despite the strain in her voice as she asked, “What else would I mean, dear?” She then moved over to sit on her bed. She patted the spot beside her. “Come.”

Anastasia was hesitant. This behavior was unusual from Alibeth; it had to be that the queen wanted something from her. Nonetheless, she moved her cello aside and moved over to join her.

There was an uncomfortable silence before Alibeth asked, “Should I be concerned over the falcon?”

“No. She belongs to a friend I met today... I think he set the bird to cheer me up.“

“Ah. Well, I’d like you to return that thing before the night falls.”

“Planned on it.” Anastasia replied tersely. Thara pecking at some beef filled the air under the silence. After a moment, she turned on her mother. “You know. If you’re here to try to manipulate me into giving you information you want, it’s not going to work. I just had a decent nap and I’m-”

“I’m sorry.”

The princess looked at mother with wide eyes. “What?”

Alibeth sighed once more and looked at her daughter with a distant gaze. “I apologize...” Her words were measured, her tone subdued. “I know I haven’t been the mother you want, Ana... I can be harsh and strict. Frankly, I've struggled to understand you over the years. But perhaps, I haven't made enough effort to understand, and I haven't given you nor your brothers much room to understand me either.” She paused.

She then gave a small, tight-lipped smile, a rare display of vulnerability. “If there's one thing I know about you, it's your unwavering loyalty. So, if you would allow me, I'll share a little about myself, and I ask that you keep it between us.” Her voice softened slightly, revealing a glimpse of the woman behind the cold exterior.

Anastasia uncomfortably shifted before giving the queen a nod.

"My father, much like your brother Auguste, was consumed by his obsession with swordsmanship. He taught my twin sisters and me the ways of the blade from a young age, but it came with great expectations. We trained rigorously, honing our skills day in and day out. He would come to train us every morning, emphasizing the need to protect our siblings. But then he would leave, and we wouldn't see him until the next day." Pausing briefly, Alibeth’s gaze turned distant.

"As for my mother, she fell ill when I was just a child, and my sister and I had to care of her as well as our siblings. By the time I was no longer a child, I had become proficient with various weapons, able to use everything adequately from guns to swords. But by then, I had lost my sister, and my father had stopped returning as he had warned me he would."

“It’s very apparent even today that the best thing I’m good for is surviving. I may not know how to be the kind of mother you and Callum expect, Anastasia, but my only goal is to ensure your survival.. We live in an unforgiving world, Ana. People will turn on you and take advantage of you at your lowest. My hope is that you and your siblings will always have each other, no matter what challenges you face…” The queen’s gaze lowered. “You are fortunate in a way that you may not fully comprehend.”

Anastasia’s eyes narrowed thoughtfully. “This… I thought you were the daughter of some Varian nobles… Why would you be in such a situation when you’re…”

Alibeth met her eyes wordlessly.

“Oh.” She frowned. “So that’s not the truth…Am I the only one who knows?”

“No.” Alibeth’s eyes averted forward. “Your father knows….It’s not something that matters.” The brunette returned her gaze, “The point is I want you to understand I am on your side. All of yours. I have no wish to make any of you miserable in any way…However I did take notice that something else seemed to be making you feel in sorry spirits today. Maybe it’s your turn to trust me now.”

Anastasia found herself grappling with the weight of the conversation and Alibeth's unexpected change in behavior. She appreciated her mother's trust in confiding such a vulnerable secret, but it was a lot to process. She absently drummed her fingers against the bed before finally mustering the courage to ask softly, "...What would you do if you realized you might be a bad person?"

"Bad is a subjective concept, Anastasia. What truly matters is your own perception of yourself. If you are dissatisfied with who you are, you can change.”Her thoughts trailed back to their earlier conversation. It wasn’t all too difficult for her to piece together the puzzle. “Although, I personally disagree with your realization… First of all, Darryn is not who you think he is. While I may not have the full scope of the boy, I am certain he is inviting darkness into his life, and it is best for you not to understand more fully. As for Callum, I know you have the ability to mend whatever has transpired between you two."

“Even so, I don’t know if I have ever been sure what kind of person I am.”

Alibeth paused, her thoughts fleeting as she gazed at Anastasia. She had previously believed that she didn't understand her daughter either, but now she realized that perhaps she had always understood who Anastasia was, but had been misguided in comprehending the stark differences between them. Perhaps those differences did not have to matter.

She finally reached out to take Anastasia's hand, giving it a reassuring squeeze, "You are a strong and compassionate woman who leads with her heart." For the first time since she could remember, her daughter smiled at her. A faint smile tugged at the queen’s lips as well. She then stood up, taking Anastasia's hands and urging her to rise from the bed. "Now, freshen up and put on something nice. I would like you to join us for dinner in the dining room. I've already invited Wulfric to join us though I have no inkling as to where Callum is.”

A chatter came from Thara and the two women immediately locked eyes. Anticipating her next words, Alibeth sharply ordered, “The bird remains in here.”

Time: 1600

Sjan-dehk dipped his head slightly as he took the coin. Wrapping it in a fist, he pressed it against his chest as he bowed. “Thank you. Will find you later at the park. Give something in return, yes?” He already had a few ideas in mind for a reciprocal gift. A sampling of the materials stored in the Sudah’s holds would likely be appreciated by a craftsman such as Roman. Or perhaps one of the more artisanal weapons; something that was much better suited for the hunt than a battlefield. There was also always the option of spirits and spices; both evergreen choices that, as far he knew, were always welcome.

Or, he could just bring a bit of everything. Very likely, he’d have to. From what he understood, Roman had been called away by a princess – likely his, by the sound of things – and she’d be present at the park later on. Naturally, Sjan-dehk would have to present her with a gift as well. Basic courtesy, really; it wouldn’t be very nice if he showed up, gave Roman something, and left her with nothing beyond niceties.

Something along those lines; rules of decorum weren’t things Sjan-dehk was overly-familiar with. He knew what they were and how they worked, but nothing deeper than that.

After he parted ways with Roman, he took some time to wander around. Not aimlessly, but simply without a specific destination in mind. If a city was a reflection of its ruler, then it stood to reason that having a look around would allow Sjan-dehk to have some gauge of the Caesonian king’s person. There already were a few vague opinions floating around in his head, but their first encounter had been a mixed experience, to say the least. A little more insight, a little more information; that was all Sjan-dehk needed.

Besides, it wasn’t as if he had anything else to do or anywhere else to me. He was already off his ship; he may as well make himself useful.

He took the road south, heading towards the coast. Despite his plans, there really wasn’t much in this part of the city for him to see. Nothing that would tell him anything new, at least. Aside from the arena behind him and an animal pen that would soon join it, Sjan-dehk could see little places of interest. The cluster of buildings opposite the pen did seem rather well-built and well-taken care of, but that wasn’t much different from what he had seen along the coast earlier. After them came what appeared to be a larger version of the arena. Its walls of brick-and-mortar stretched high into the sky, and there were a few groups of people finding shelter from the heat of the late afternoon sun in its long shadow.

Birds chirped from trees lining the road. Some flitted between branches in feathery blurs. As Sjan-dehk approached the intersection at its end, the buzzing clamour of a thronging crowd grew louder and louder until it was a constant, ubiquitous hum. Everything told him that this was a normal, healthy city. The people looked happy enough; their needs seemed to be adequately taken care of, and things were certainly going well enough for their lord to invite royal parties from not one, but two of their neighbours.

And yet, he still felt like he was missing something.

The fisherwoman – hot-blooded Aislin – had painted him a rather bleak picture. One where those who fed the city were themselves hungry; where they couldn’t even venture beyond the city’s immediate waters for fear of bandits and pirates; where – it seemed – royal authority was absent where it was needed. None of it made sense to Sjan-dehk. Surely, a city which could afford to host so many guests – and, of course, the miscellaneous and expensive activities that came with it – could afford to do something for their suffering citizens. One well-armed ship would be enough to chase away minor bandits. Sjan-dehk knew that for a fact. He also knew that it wasn’t exactly the costliest of endeavours.

A dense copse of trees lined the street to his left. If his bearings were right – and they usually were – then right behind them would be the sprawling slum in which he had gotten lost earlier. Almost as if those who planned the city were intentionally trying to keep it hidden. Sjan-dehk frowned. It reminded him of a story commonly told to young Viserjantans, particularly Jafins such as himself. ‘The King who Barred his Doors to Escape a Siege’, it was called. A precautionary tale about the dangers of rejecting harsh realities to live amongst comforting lies. Suffice to say, none involved in the story had a happy ending.

He shook his head. Perhaps he was reading too much into things.

The path he followed soon turned from cut cobblestones to bare dirt. Buildings of stone and brick turned to shacks of tattered cloth and misshapen wood. Gone were the orderly streets, now replaced by intertwined and winding alleys which led everywhere and nowhere at once. Sjan-dehk navigated his way with his ears as much as he did with his eyes. So long as he could still hear the crash of waves or the call of sea-birds, he knew he wasn’t going in the wrong direction.

Soon, however, he picked up the faded echoes of familiar words. A song, and not just any song. It was an incredibly bawdy one sung in his native tongue. Sjan-dehk let out a long sigh. Had this been a Viserjantan city, he would’ve raced to find whomever it was that sang it to swiftly and firmly shut them up. Even by the off-colour standards of an average sailor, the song was particularly offensive and an easy way to start a fight should someone from the eastern Viserjantan provinces hear it.

But, this was not a Viserjantan city, and so Sjan-dehk took his time to follow the song. It didn’t take long for him to reach what appeared to be an open-air tavern. Tables were arranged haphazardly in a fenced-off open area attached to a larger building. Every seat was occupied, and every hand held a mug or bottle or flagon. So cheery was the mood that Sjan-dehk couldn’t help but crack a smile as he stepped through the entrance and towards the table where his men sat.

Or at least, three of them sat. The fourth stood on a chair with one foot on the table as he belted out verse after verse of the song. His black hair was matted to his forehead, and his uniform so unkempt that it was a wonder how any of it stayed on with his wild and exaggerated movements. The locals seemed to either be entertained by or making fun of his antics. Sjan-dehk would’ve honestly understood either way. In fact, he was already thinking of how he was going to relate this particular event to the rest of the crew.

The man looked down to take a swig from his flagon, and it was then he caught sight of Sjan-dehk. For a moment, he froze. Then, his eyes widened and he almost dropped his drink as he stood to attention on the chair. “C-Captain!” He shouted out. His three other fellows immediately stood up, their backs straight as ramrods and eyes looking straight ahead. Sjan-dehk could feel every pair of eyes present turn to him, and hear the whispers that were beginning to ripple through the crowd.

“At ease, Wafeh,” he said and gestured for them to sit. Wafeh let out a long breath as he stepped off the chair and approached Sjan-dehk. He did his best to fix disheveled hair, but all he succeeded in doing was to smear the individual strands across his dark face. “Getting to know the locals already?” The smile on Sjan-dehk’s face turned into a grin. “Quite a song to introduce them to.”

Wafeh gulped. “I-” He began, then cleared his throat and stood to attention again. His eyes nervously flicked to Sjan-dehk every now and then as he spoke. “Able Seaman Dayan Wafeh reporting, captain. It was an accident. I drank too much and didn’t think, captain. It won’t happen again.”

Sjan-dehk chuckled and waved his hand dismissively. “What you sing is up to you. Just make sure no one from the Sudah is around to hear you. They have a few easterners aboard, and they’re not all as tough as those of us from the west, or the centre. If they get offended and decide to give you a beating, you’re on your own. Consider this a fair warning.” He nodded to the three behind Wafeh. “You all work under Master Hai-shuun, do you?”

Wafeh nodded. “Yes, captain. There wasn’t much to do on the Sada Kurau, so master Hai-shuun told us we could come ashore if we wanted.”

“You can stand at ease. No need for ceremony here. You're making me bloody uncomfortable, to be honest.” Wafeh visibly relaxed, but still walked stiffly back to his seat when Sjan-dehk motioned for him to do so. The captain followed, stopping at the edge of the table with arms folded. These four men were some of the lowest-ranked members of his crew, and so even with Sjan-dehk’s reputation of a lax captain, they still kept their eyes averted. “When I say to be at ease, I mean it. I didn’t come here looking for any of you. I was just walking around and having a look. How are you finding the city?”

Wafeh was the one who responded. “It’s good, captain. We don’t understand the people here and they don’t understand us, but no one’s given us any trouble so far. We could even get ourselves a drink just by using our hands, as you suggested.”

Sjan-dehk nodded slowly. It was good to hear that his men were settling in nicely, and even better to know that they had actually listened to his earlier speech. “Glad to hear it. I’ll be making my way back to Sada Kurau. Enjoy yourselves, but not too much.” He gave them a little smirk as he glanced at Wafeh. “And I think I know who to look for the next time we need someone to lead a song for hard graft. Just make sure you pick your songs wisely, yes?”

That got a few chuckles from the men. Three of them, at least, and Sjan-dehk took that as his cue to leave. Just as he was about to take his first step, however, Wafeh called out to him. “Oh, captain, master Hai-shuun had something he wanted us to tell you. If we ran into you, that was, and we did. Someone from the Sudah came by looking for you. Her Ladyship of Good Counsel wants to see you.”

“Lady Adiyan?” Sjan-dehk’s brows furrowed. “Didn’t think she’d be fit to see anyone today.”

Wafeh shrugged with an apologetic look on his face. “I don’t know anything else, captain. Everyone who left the ship after you were just told to pass the word if they saw you.”

Sjan-dehk nodded. “Thank you. As you were.” With that, he made haste to return to his ship. This was an unexpected turn of events, but not entirely unwelcome. There were some things he needed to clarify with Lady Adiyan, anyway, and if she felt well enough to receive visitors, then she was most likely out of any grave danger.

He just hoped what he had to tell her would be good enough.

The dark-haired girl in the white gown stood in Lorenzo’s room, her eyes fixated on the trio of objects laid out before her - a bullet, a flask, and a bottle. She reached for the bottle, cautiously unscrewing the cap and taking a whiff. The pungent herbal aroma of the gun reached her nostrils, and she recoiled slightly. Her gaze then turned to the flask of opium. She picked it up, studying it carefully, her mind swirling with concern. “Is he mixing these?” She whispered to herself in despair. As for the bullet, Charlotte could deduce that Count Fritz had discharged the pistol into the wall. She furrowed her brow, wondering why it had been loaded with only one bullet. Her anxiety surged as she heard the front doors of the house opening, and Nathaniel's voice echoed dimly in her ears. Time was running out.

With a sense of urgency, Charlotte approached the gun and retrieved the spent bullet, swiftly reloading it back into the chamber. Her eyes then fell upon the other two mysterious items in the room, the opium flask and the gin bottle. She racked her brain trying to figure out where they could have come from, but she had no time to dwell on it. Quickly, she moved over to the gun and took it back down, reloading the bullet inside. She mounted it back where it had been, her eyes thus falling on the other two items in question.

The problem at hand was certainly that Charlotte had absolutely no idea where they had come from. Alas, she had no time to think about it. It was possible Lorenzo would simply think he misplaced it when he was drunk. Hurrying over, she picked the two items up in each hand.

Not under the bed. I doubt he’d leave it somewhere it could roll out into sight. I am not sure it would fit in the night table… The closet or the chest?

Charlotte thought quickly, her eyes darting between her options. She decided to go for the closer option and picked up the two glass containers, placing them inside the chest and closing it quietly. As she rushed to her own bedroom, Charlotte pressed herself up against the door, her breathing heavy with a mix of adrenaline and apprehension. She closed her eyes tightly, trying to collect her thoughts amidst the chaos swirling in her mind.

"Prince Wulfric was right... About all of it," She whispered to herself, the weight of the situation sinking in. She knew she would have to confront Lorenzo, but doing so before the high-stakes dinner with the sultan was not the best timing. Charlotte let out a deep sigh.

As time ticked on, the preparation process had been another whirlwind of rushing. She had initially picked out a sweet feminine lilac dress with a matching lace bow, but then Delilah intervened and steered her in a more mature direction. Charlotte soon found herself now staring at her reflection in the mirror, adorned in a stunning dark-red velvety dress with intricate gold details at the waist and cuffs. The dress hugged her curves in all the right places yet remained appropriate by all means. Her hair was styled up in a neat bun, with a few stray strands framing her face, adding a touch of softness to her regal appearance.

“Spitting image of your mother, my Lady.” Delilah's voice came from over her shoulder, a note of warmth in her tone. “She was perhaps a lot of things, but beautiful was one of them.” Charlotte’s expression softened only slightly.

Delilah had long noticed her unusual behavior over the past hour, ever since they had begun preparing. She had barely been speaking and had even wanted to get ready alone. Delilah insisted, of course, as dolling up Lottie was one of her favorite activities.

“Oh, but it's missing something,” Delilah observed, moving behind Charlotte. Charlotte watched her reflection in the mirror with a perplexed look as Delilah worked on her hair. After a few moments, Delilah held up a hand-held mirror, and Charlotte saw that a subtle gold haircomb had been embedded into her bun. “...It was my mother’s,”

At first, Charlotte started to smile, impressed by the beautiful hair ornament. However, her smile quickly faltered as a wave of mixed emotions washed over her. “Delilah... I can't wear this,” she said softly, her voice filled with conflict.

The blonde maid grinned at Charlotte's reflection in the mirror, her eyes gleaming with a hint of chaos. She suddenly gripped Charlotte's arms and gave her a small shake, eliciting a surprised laugh from Charlotte. “Yes, you can, you silly girl! And yes, you will! I want you to, Delilah exclaimed with determination.

Charlotte tried to turn around, but Delilah quickly turned her back, refusing to let her see what she was up to. “Nope. Oneee mooore thing.” She informed her in a singsong voice and then moved to retrieve something off the dresser. “This one was your mother’s, right? ” Delilah pulled a gold chain around her neck and clasped it. A small heart-shaped locket hung off it. “Take her with you.”

Delilah rubbed Charlotte's arm affectionately as they both looked at her reflection in the mirror. “Now, you really look like her,” Delilah said with a smile.

Charlotte touched the locket gently, her heart swelling with emotion. She then gave her a small smile and nodded. “… Thank you, Delilah.” She finally was able to spin and face the maid. She took her hands. “I’m grateful for you.”

Delilah wiped away her own tears and looked at Charlotte with concern. “And I for you, Lottie... Now, are you going to tell me what's wrong before those tears ruin my makeup?”

Charlotte's gaze averted as she struggled to find the right words. “I... I'm scared, Delilah,” she finally admitted, her voice betraying her vulnerability.

Delilah frowned and quickly brushed away the tears brimming in her eyes. Delilah was struck by how much Charlotte sounded like the little girl who used to ask her to sit by her bedside after a nightmare; it was a tone she hadn't heard in a long time.

“Don’t be. You can handle this. I know my Lottie and she never gives up, ‘even in the face of danger’!” Delilah grinned at her and picked up a nearby book and wiggled it. “Finally read it. You’re right. It’s fun reading about female heroines for a change sometimes. Now hurry to meet your father before you’re late.”

Charlotte considered her words. Perhaps she had let her mind wander too negatively after a long day. It was a good thing she knew about Lorenzo after all, as now she could actually help him. Additionally, if they were going to get out of this dinner unscathed, she was going to need to bring all her focus. She nodded and smiled more genuinely this time. “You’re right. I can handle this.”

As Charlotte had moved out of her room and down the hall, Delilah called down, “Don’t forget to keep bringing pretty boys home for me to look at!”

Fortunately, Lorenzo refrained from acting against Dr. Williamson after he explained himself. Besides, the poor young lady seemed warm to his presence. I guess she likes that sort of thing… Doctors slapping her in such a way. A fetish maybe? Lorenzo minded his business until the conclusion of the play but couldn’t help but notice the character simply referred to as the duke. He was juggling prop ferrets, which was something he couldn’t ignore. He stared at the jester-like character longer than he probably should have. The insult sank into his heart like a rusted and jagged dagger. That’s how they see me. That’s how they all see me. He shut his eyes tight to the stage, shouldering the emotional wound the seemingly accurate rendition of him left. [color

Before the curtain could fall, Lorenzo stormed out, his face stern as he clutched his ferret Kier in his arms.

No longer! He swore to himself as he walked briskly to his carriage readied by the reliable driver, Benjamin. “Take me home this instant! We must pick up Nathaniel. And then, we head back into town. I will need gifts for dinner tonight.”

With little to say, Benjamin did as he was ordered. He made sure to get to the estate as quickly as possible, especially with Lorenzo constantly asking if he could faster every leg of the route. Once the carriage arrived in front of Lorenzo’s Sorian property, he rushed out continuing the brisk walk he had started after leaving the theater. Upon entering the estate, burst past the foyer.

“Nathaniel!” Nathaniel was literally standing five feet from Lorenzo ready to greet him.

“Y-yes my lord.” Nathaniel was a bit taken aback and he dealt with the duke every day. Lorenzo was offering up Kier with outstretched arms.

“Have Delilah see Kier groomed and returned to his quarters. Then, I need her to lay out an outfit for tonight’s dinner. Time is of the essence! Once that is done, get to the carriage. We have shopping tend to.”

“I’ll make haste, my lord.” Nathaniel nodded as he took Kier reluctantly as the ferret sometimes bit him. He never knew why but always tried to avoid handling the critter when he could. His best bet was to get Kier to Delilah immediately. The matter of shopping with the duke was strange but it would give him something different to do which was an escape from his mundane duties.

With simultaneous nods, the two men briskly darted in opposite directions. Lorenzo was making his way back to the carriage while Nathaniel was trying to find Delilah while enduring the sporadic bites from Kier. Gods!

In a few moments, Lorenzo, Benjamin, and Nathaniel were headed back into town with Lorenzo laser-focused on one task. Gifts!

Nathaniel was the first to enter the estate after the round of errands for gifts and other items, but only because Lorenzo insisted on carrying the most bags in so he didn’t look like a “juggling jester of a fool!” Nathaniel didn’t quite understand it, but he simply conformed to the Duke’s odd request as he had always done. Despite this, he knew his place and would not disrespect Lorenzo’s title. As he carried his few bags in he gently set them down.

“Duke Vikena, I am coming to take some of your bags!” Nathaniel called as he watched Lorenzo teeter back and forth as he slowly walked the path to the estate. Lorenzo’s face was as red as a tomato, taking on far too much than he could. He hadn’t considered the walk from where the carriage would park to the front door. This was possibly the biggest inconvenience of the property's design, though Lorenzo did enjoy the opportunity to have more flora planted out front.

“I have it!” Lorenzo argued, yet… Gods this is heavy! I hope he just takes some of these bags!

“Duke Vikena, I insist!” Nathaniel could not ignore Lorenzo’s struggle. He’d drop the bags or pop a blood vessel before he got to the door. Nathaniel took some of the bags, rather easily from Lorenzo who feigned a sigh.

“I was fine but thank you, Nathaniel.” Lorenzo was absolutely grateful! The two hurried inside, gently setting down the bags. “Alright, ensure these gifts aren’t damaged! I must get dressed!” Lorenzo darted up the stairs so fast that he tripped and fell after the sixth step. “Oof!” He let out before picking himself up. “Grr!” he grunted as he continued up the steps on all fours.
Once in his room, his eyes focused on the outfit on his bed. Yes, Delilah! YES! This is perfect! Lorenzo smiled so big that if he had a third row of teeth, they’d show.

Maybe…

“Look out Alidasht. I’m ready for you. In fact…” Lorenzo walked over to his bed and got down on his hands and knees to look underneath. To his surprise, the containers of gin and opium were nowhere to be found. Did I… Did I run out? No… but… Fuck. Fuck! FUCK! FUCK! FUCK! I can’t face them completely sober. They’ll eat me alive! FUCK!

“Duke Vikena. Is everything alright? The gifts are all intact.” Lorenzo popped up from the floor as suspiciously as anyone could be.

“Of course! I was just-”

“In need of an edge. I know, my lord.” Nathaniel raised his brows, showing he understood Lorenzo's struggle.

“Uh… Yes, but not much. Just-”

“Something you can control. Honestly, it’s probably for the best. That flask of yours is… Well, it’s dangerous.” Nathaniel nodded sternly.

“Wait… You know about the flask?” Lorenzo was quite surprised since he mixed his drugs within the confines of his room. Then again, he was not a mastermind in keeping things hidden.

“How could I not, my lord? I’ll go get something for you while you get dressed. Ride for the length of the dinner and I’m sure you’ll be fine. Besides, you have Lady Vikena to accompany you. I assure you, you both can face these Alidasht savages. They are nothing compared to the ire of the Sorian political climate. You skimmed that book you wanted, yes?”

“Yes, some of it but-”

“Duke Vikena, you now know more than what you knew. Use it. It’s what Walter did. You may see him as someone to surpass, naturally so but he was a fool who simply quoted dead men. You can do this,” Nathaniel assured.

“I can… I can!” Lorenzo felt a tinge of confidence.

“Perfect. I will return with the edge you need, my lord.” Nathaniel nodded before exiting the doorway. He left Lorenzo to face his outfit and his expectations.

With the devilish red outfit adorned, Lorenzo walked from his room taking a swig of gin given to him by Nathaniel before heading down the stairs to meet with Charlotte. There was an unfamiliar presence accompanied with his descent down the steps. It almost appeared as if he had taken pointers from Count Damien, yet Nathaniel stood at the top of the steps with a satisfied grin.

Time: 6pm
Location: Guest House Dining Room - Dinner with the Sultan

Even though the Caesonian cuisine proved to be better than what Mayet had expected, to be able to eat some traditional Alidasht cuisine was certainly a welcome thing. A taste of home after the many 'events' she been through since she arrived on Caesonia would definitely be re-comforting. Even if she had to deal with that clueless duke once again... Hopefully, he learned his lesson and there wouldn't be any issues this time.

Unlike the previous dresses Mayet used, the one she wore for this dinner wasn't as showy and flamboyant as the previous ones she had used, instead being a more traditional and proper silk dress. The particular dress Mayet had chosen to wear was a beautiful black dress with a delicate, green silk shawl. The choice of dress was definitely a subtle hint as to how even Mayet, despite her wild and fiery temper, respected certain Alidasht traditions, especially in such a formal dinner with her father, the Sultan. Despite the formal situation though, Nala was, obviously, still accompanying Mayet.

The scent of Alidasht spices Mayet felt as soon as she arrived was a comforting and familiar one. With the addition of the finely crafted, traditional Alidasht tableware, plates and decoration made Mayet feel almost as if the Sultan had brought a bit of Alidasht to Caesonia.

While she was entering the dining room, Mayet couldn't help but stop for a moment as her eyes met with the servant that was escorting lord Leo Smithwood inside. She wasn't sure why, but there was a rather... familiar 'fire' in her eyes. The exchange of stares only lasted for a brief moment though, before Mayet offered a discreet greeting nod towards the servant and moved on to greet the guests that had already arrived. Fortunately, despite her suspicion it didn't seem like Mayet had caught on who the servant was yet.

"Lord Leo. It's quite surprising to see you here today! I assumed you would come to escort Lady Charlotte, but I see you have a partner of your own today." Mayet said, greeting him and the redhead woman he was accompanying with an smile.

"I hope the traditional Alidasht cuisine will be to your liking." she said with a discreet greeting to both of them before she turned to her cousin Farim, who was also just arriving.

"Cousin Farim! It's been some time I last saw you since we came to Caesonia. I guess I wasn't the only one busy these days." Mayet said with a chuckle.

"I wonder if Nahir, Layla and Munir will also be coming to tonight's dinner as well. I am sure we all have a lot interesting stories to catch up with, right Farim?" she said with a smirk, almost as if discreetly asking if Farim did anything 'interesting' he might want to share with them as well, before she made her way to her father, the Sultan, to greet him.

"Good evening, father. I hope Caesonia has been treating you well." Mayet said, greeting the Sultan with a smile.

"Despite the few... issues we had to deal with, my stay on Caesonia has been quite... entertaining so far." she said to the Sultan with a smile as she took her seat at the table, with Nala lying down just besides her.

While most people who didn't know Mayet well wouldn't think much of her good mood, her cousins, siblings and the sultan would definitely be know that the visible improvement on her mood was, for the most part, thanks to the recent events, such as the hunting and sword competition, which were able to help her to calm down and relax after the... 'problems' she faces upon arriving on Caesonia. Sultan Raif in particular would know that finding Mayet in such a good mood was quite rare. It also meant that unless something really bad happened to offend her on this dinner, it would be highly unlikely he would have to deal with her temper tonight.

Conscripts An Atom Trying to Understand Itself

Ah, John expected as much. Glad to see the duke still had some restraint and capacity for reasons. And a good testament that remaining calm and collected in a situation like this was always a good thing. No need to get violent early on, even though if push came to shove, he absolutely can.

Seeing that she was back from her trance to reality, she looked like she was fine after all. Nothing particularly worrisome about her behavior, which relieved John quite a bit. And a pretty invitation to the play too. It would have been quite a bad look to refuse her offer, but the problem here was that the seat she was referring to was empty because the nobleman earlier had vacated it, and was now looking to have back. He couldn't just take that spot from the lad.

"Thank you, miss, but I've proven intrusive." John gestured towards the nobleman, stepping aside to let him sit down. "Would have loved to join otherwise."

Well, not exactly? It was a Caesonian play after all, and he was no fan of them, seeing them as no more than an extension of the degenerate over-sensationalized Caesonian Morning papers. It's been a while since he had seen a proper and artistic play from them.

John left the theatre afterwards, continuing his curiosity driven wandering for a while longer until a messenger approached him. This wasn't the guys from the Institute, so John was curious to who would be sending a letter to him of all people. Calbert was the only notable person to pop up in his mind, but the flowery envelope seemed to suggest otherwise. Upon opening, the beautiful handwriting gave it away, if her signature hadn't already.

5:45 pm

Despite the notable lack of excitement on John's part, he still took his time to prepare for the party. In fact, he even decided to get a change of attire, slightly. It was a newer and more modern fashion style for the Varians, but patterns remained simple and humble, a notable pride on their open-mindedness and egalitarian culture. On one of his collars was the signature pin of every Institute member, an honour he was willing to display to everyone. It seemed rather formal for a dinner under firework, but like he told Nahir, he was someone who would wear the same kind of clothes all over until the day he dies.

Sadie's park arrangement were very obvious to the eye even before he arrived at the park, the picnic blanket acted just like flowers from afar. It was a nice marker to follow, and John headed straight for there. It seemed like he was quite early to the dinner, as only the princess and her servants were around.

"Good evening, your Royal Highness. Thank you for the invitation." The doctor approached Sadie with a polite bow and a smile. "How has your day been treating you?"

Attire: Formal attire.
Interaction(s): Everyone currently present at the Dinner, Ríoghnach @JJ Doe, Mayet Kadir @13org, Leo Smithwood @Helo, Sultan Kaid Raif.
Mention(s): Wulfric Danrose @Silverpaw, Matthias Larsen @Rodiak, Reohg @JJ Doe, Mayet Kadir @13org

Auguste observed the rest of the matches in the booth with his father to observed the rest of the fights. The words of the masked swordswoman nestled uncomfortably in the back of his mind. He tried not to think of it now and simply enjoy the rest of the proceedings. Wulfric's match was interesting. He was well aware of his brother's swordsmanship prowess, so anyone able to keep up and trade blows with him was someone worth keeping in mind. Sir Mathias Larsen, huh... His eyes had unconsciously focused and sharpened as he watched the match. Ultimately it came to a close match, it ending with Wulfric's victory. He stifled a chuckle at how refreshed his brother had looked. He followed the onerous cheering with his own applause for the well fought battle.

The next match, however, Auguste watched with attentively. It was a match between the masked swordswoman 'Reohg Knock' vs Shehzadi Mayet Kadir. The fight was long and intense. An exceptional fight. Shehzadi Mayet's handle on her unorthodox weaponry was something to marvel. But this... 'Reohg' was able to keep up with her. This was a surprise as this fighter was unknown. He knew most of the prominent fighters in the underground circuit, as he keeps close tabs on them for his mission. It was strange that he hadn't heard of Reohg.

The fight went on for much longer than the other fights. A beautiful dance of blades. The two appeared equally matched but he did notice that Reohg began slowing down. Eventually Mayet came out the victor with Reohg offering her blade to the Shehzadi. There was an interesting exchange as the end of the fight winded down. Though he lauded such exchanges, something itched in the back of his head.

Auguste stroked his chin. There were three things that occurs during an attack. The wind-up, contact, and recovery. A simplistic concept. With a jab, the extension of the arm is the wind-up; it can also increase force or speed. Contact was when the fist lands on your opponent. Recovery is retracting your fist to your guard position. This concept applies to swordsmanship. Swordsmen can often mask, or even eliminate, the first and third step, though it was contingent with their mastery of the blade.

August was particularly skilled at reading body movement. This allows him excel in duels as he often is able to read his opponents actions- their attacks, feints, and similar.

As a happy coincidence, this makes Auguste excellent at recognizing who an individual is through their gait and posture. Usually he is able to simply tell who was who without needing to see their face. Reohg's gait and cadence scratched at his mind. He knows who this individual was but he had trouble placing exactly who.

Auguste snapped out of his ruminations and joined the crowd's applause.

Time: 6:00pm

For the rest of the afternoon, Auguste attended to some more paperwork and a few meetings with his knights. He was a bit sad at missing some of the other events but duty calls.

He had bathed and dressed himself in formal dress attire. A favourite of his, often used during relatively important meetings, political courts, or meeting with delegates and similar.

Soon Auguste found himself entering the dining room. His entrance wasn't trumpeted nor grandiose, as he simply entered the dining room casually, as if he was simply some guest. He personally found no need for such theatrics, as he has observed his father personally having the trumpeters follow him around for his grandiose entrances.

He passed by Riona, greeting her with a smile. “Ah, Riona, good evening. I hope that you have had time away to enjoy some of the events today.” His tone was friendly and jovial, as he had not suspected that Riona was Reohg.

Auguste's first action was to greet the Sultan. “Sultan Kaid Raif, peace be upon you. I give you my thanks for allowing me to attend your dinner,” He said with a bow.

The next was to greet each other attendant currently present. “Shehzadi Mayet, your match with Reohg was spectacular. I admire your mastery of your unorthodox weaponry.”

“Lord Leo. I hope the events we've hosted have been to your tastes.”

Auguste walked over to Farim to acquaint himself. He has only heard of the man through reputation Wystan's reports. The Prince extended his hand out towards Farim. “Sir... Farim Kadir, I take it. Your skill in trading is renowned even here in Caesonia. Pleased to make your acquaintance.”

Finally Auguste took a seat to marvel at the dining room. The scents and sights was different... unique compared to the traditional dinners he has had. He silently admired the excellent craftsmanship of the Alidasht. He took a sip of water. Hopefully this dinner will go well.

L O C A T I O N : Guesthouse & Sadie’s Party
I N T E R A C T I O N S : Princess Sadie Camilia @Potter
M E N T I O N S : Lady Thea Smithwood @Tae, Princess Sadie Camilia @Potter

Bitterness had taken Prince Felix’s feelings. Lady Thea had not shown up for their dinner. He waited for over half a hour, seated, just simply waiting for her to make her appearance. Alas, she never did.

He should have seen this happening, but somehow blindsided himself. She was always coy and fickle one moment and then the next, exactly as she had been the night before. There was no reason to make any expectations of her. She was volatile.

He checked his pocket watch. There was still ample time to make Sadie’s party. This was something positive to look forward to, after he wasted an entire day on his betrothed with little to show, not even a simple dinner.

First, he made way back to his guest room. There was no use in bringing the Lady’s present around with him. Next, he decided to change his clothes to something a little more casual. His sword would be coming along with him as usual, but he decided to change out his holder — reminding himself he missed the sword competition.

Letting the mood roll from him, at least externally, the Prince checked his pocket watch one last time, for punctuation and proceeded out the door of the guest room. He made his way to the party, holding an air of reasonable nobility. There was no reason to foul the mood at his sister’s affair.

When he arrived he made sure to greet his sister with as much jovial love as possible, possibly verging on a sibling enamorment. He also entertained the possibilities of making light with the rest of the guests.

Lord Leo Smithwood

Time: 6 pm
Location: Guest House; Dining Room

The dining hall was a stunning example of what Caesonia’s always did right; every detail was meticulous, no expense spared, and there was no fault to be found in tonight's atmosphere. Soft golden light surrounded by brilliant reds evoked the majesty of a desert sunset. But this was not just a feast for the eyes, the scent of warm spices filled the dining hall. All it took was to close one’s eyes and it was like being transported to Alidasht. Or at least it was how Leo had imagined it; an eternal summer surrounded by exotic scents that carried the warmth of the sun’s rays in through the nose with just enough heat to tickle the senses. Leo looked upon the dining hall the way a child looked at a collection of presents beneath a Yule tree.

His grin only faltered as he caught sight of Sorian’s least helpful servant. How such a clearly flawed servant ended up with assignments of the highest honor was a brief source of confusion. But it was fine; Leo had carefully bathed, scrubbing not only behind the ears but beneath the fingernails and ensuring there was no fault in his appearance or scent tonight. A quick scan of Riona left him positive she had tracked in nothing from the horse stalls to be used against him either. So he followed the servant towards the table but the glare never quite left his eyes as he tracked her movements.

At the head of the table sat the Sultan, decked out in the finest of everything; his wealth draped around him in silks, his power shining in the glint of every fine jewel, and it all inspired such a feeling of reverence. To bow before the exquisite Sultan came so naturally it required no thought. Leo eagerly moved to take his seat with only a slight, and unimpressed, nod to Riona. When his chair was pulled from him, and his ass very nearly found itself unexpectedly hitting the ground, it took a moment for it to register.

For some unexplainable reason, Riona seemed to have decided she wanted to make an enemy of him. He attempted an irritated glare disguised with a hollow smile but his skin flushed with vermillion embarrassment, betraying the work he put into the rest of his face. He filed this offense away from another time, nothing was ruining this night for him, and certainly not some nobody playing childish games with chairs and mud.

Leo was back out of the chair at Mayet’s entrance, again at Auguste’s, and for every other guest who entered. He stood, he bowed, and he offered all the expected signs of respect. He found himself momentarily tongue-tied by Mayet’s words, unsure of whom she’d assumed his partner was and even more unsure about not having escorted Charlotte here. “Shehzadi Mayet, and radiant royal feline, I would never dream of robbing Duke Vikena of the honor.” Leo said, before greeting Prince Auguste as well. “Your Highness, your family only ever exceeds expectations, how has your day been?” He asked the prince.

The doors to the dining room burst open with an audible bang, announcing the entrance of Layla. The bang was enough to cause everyone to turn their heads to look over. Her emerald green dress shimmered in the light as if it were made of actual crystals. Her dark curls cascaded down her back in a display of effortless elegance. Her arms were adorned with various gold accessories as if she were a walking treasure trove, and her golden headpiece with gems. Her makeup matched her regal attire, with gold outlining her dark eyeliner, magnificent long lashes, and dark-red lipstick that screamed power; much like the snake around her neck. She set a hand on her hip while scanning the room with a look of disdain. She paused for a moment to allow everyone to admire her beauty. During this lovely moment, she analyzed every corner and fabric of the room.

"This is where we're eating?" Layla scoffed and glanced around, as if begging someone to tell her this was a cruel prank. "Is this where they feed their servants? What is this?”

Layla had anticipated a grand dining hall befitting their royal status. Instead, she found herself in a room plainer than the Vikena’s. She flipped her hair over her shoulder with a groan and rolled her eyes hard enough for them to pop out of their sockets. The indignity of it all was too much to bear, but a sharp glance from her father told her to stuff it. She gritted her teeth and took several deep breaths. Layla sighed and relished in the scent of the food being prepared. At least the Alidasht servants were here could cook their food properly unlike the restaurant from earlier. She giggled to herself upon remembering it.

Then, she sauntered to take a seat next to Mayet and gave her a sweet smile. The demeanor was completely different from her first reaction. Zilal slithered from her shoulders, then reached down to boop Nala on the head and flicked his tongue in greeting. Once finished, he returned back to his perch around her neck with his tail hanging over the chair. She had dressed him with a bow tie around his neck.

"Sister Mayet, I suppose we'll have to make do with their… “humble” accommodations. They must not want that unhinged Duke to ruin their expensive wares." She paused and examined the napkins before her. She held it up with her fingers as if she were uncertain it was sanitary. After inspecting it with a reluctant grimace, she laid it out on the cushion before sitting down. The other napkins she’d use sparingly. Her gaze moved around the table like a lion inspecting its prey. Bitterness sat upon her tongue, so she didn’t greet her father. Instead, she gazed at Lord Leo and gave him a wink.

Then her gaze fell on Prince Auguste and grinned coyly. "Ah, did the king send his son to overlook the dinner?” She inquired, leaning on her elbows to examine him closely. "Well, it doesn't matter; at least I have something pretty to look at. You look good enough to eat, Your Highness.”

Layla grinned. She hoped to confuse the prince for her own venomous entertainment. Then, she addressed the others. "So far, we have the presence of beauty among us. It will be ruined momentarily so enjoy the peace while you can ladies and gentlemen.”

5:15 p.m.

Nahir did not like tardiness. In fact, she hated it. It showed lack of commitment, respect and time management. It could lead to a loss of trust and could even result in ridicule. And it was just plain rude. So when she realized the time she rushed out of “Extravagancias de Toledo” leaving Petra alone and confused as to why Nahir had rushed out in such a hurry.

5:55 p.m.

Lady Mihna’s hammish fingers worked fast in folding and pressing the heavy fabrics into even neat pleats before tucking the saree into Nahir’s skirt. She wrapped it around Nahir’s waist twice then over her shoulder, letting the beautiful designs of Alidasthian royal seals cascade behind her back. To her side, Lady Suhasini worked on fastening the golden buttons on Nahir’s wrists and made sure the sleeves were puffed up perfectly.

Nahir stared at her reflection as two of her ladies-in-waiting hurriedly dressed her with meticulous movements despite the intense stare she held them under. When Lady Suhasini was finished with the cuffs, she hurriedly fastened a new golden necklace she had received from Madame Petra during her earlier visit. Petra had mentioned its history, but Nahir had been too busy working on the woman’s corset to pay much attention. Something about it being one of the Catalonian family’s heirlooms, worn by the princess during her execution after the revolution.

Slender fingertips touched the golden crests. It was so pretty on her, even prettier over the red of her saree. How did Petra know her so well?

6:00 p.m.

Nahir entered the dining hall shortly after Layla. Tonight, she had chosen a more traditional dress for herself, seeing as they would be dining with the Caesonian nobility. There had to be unity, show them that the Kadirs would stand together against any disrespect thrown their way, be it by mistake or simple human stupidity.

The saree glimmered under the candlelight, emitting a soft glow as she walked to her seat. Back straight, hands folded, and chin held high. Her locs had been twisted and carefully tied by golden thread and decorated with aquamarines that complimented the contrasting blue of the saree’s skirt. And as usual, her cheeks were painted with golden freckles that sprinkled her dark skin like stars in the night sky.

She greeted her father with a smile, “Peace be upon you, father.” she said, bowing her head slightly out of respect before taking the seat next to Layla. Nahir looked about the table, inclining her head as a greeting to the rest of the table in a more casual greeting.

“I was unaware you would be coming to the dinner tonight, but it is a pleasant surprise nonetheless.” Nahir shot Lord Leo a smile, although it was just out of mere politeness. She moved her attention then to Prince Auguste.

“I must say the same to you, Your Highness, and although I second my sister’s sentiments I welcome you to the table. Please indulge in our country’s traditional dishes, and please do try the baklava when the desert comes around. It is divine.” Her smile, like the one to Leo, did not reach her eyes.

Then she turned to her sisters, smile still in place. "I heard that the two of you were part of the contest in the arena earlier today. Please do share! Did you show the world what the Shehzadis of Alidasth are capable of?" Nahir's smile tugged further at the corners just the slightest, already knowing the outcome of the fights. Poor Layla had won in such a humiliating way.

Charlotte & Lorenzo

Location:Vikena Estate → The Castle Guesthouse
Interactions: @Rodiak Nahir @13org Mayet @Potter Layla @Helo Leo @Inertia Auguste @JJ Doe Riona

Charlotte anticipated Lorenzo's arrival in the grand foyer by the stairs, leaning against the railing's finial. Her eyes lit up as she caught sight of Lorenzo descending the stairs, clad in a dashing red suit that was not far in color from her dress. "Well, it seems that great minds do indeed think alike," She commented with a smile.

“All the credit goes to Delilah,” Lorenzo said with a chuckle as he reached the base of the stairs. He had only taken four steps toward Charlotte when he truly took in her appearance. “Emina…” He spoke so softly that the name was nearly mouthed. There were times when Charlotte unintentionally caused Lorenzo to see the phantom of his late wife but this was so much more. The dress, the necklace, the way she wore her hair… and that smile gracing her lovely face. “You look stunning, Lottie. Absolutely stunning.” Lorenzo teared up as he kept up his smile.

“Aw Lorenzo…” Her own eyes had brimmed with tears and without a moment's hesitation, she closed the distance between them and embraced him tightly. Lorenzo, returning the hug, was again reminded of how precious she was to him. Reminded of how important tonight was.

Nathaniel descended down the stairs next, wearing a classic black tuxedo and a weary look on his face. He had been charged with organizing and the gifts and helping bring them into the Alidasht's guest house. He didn't mind looking presentable for the higher class but the foreign royalty would only see him for a few minutes. Benjamin is going to help whether he likes it or not.

“My lord, apologies for interrupting but I am going to begin loading the gifts back into the carriage.”

Lorenzo broke away from the hug but kept his hands on Charlotte's shoulders so as to not swiftly remove himself from her embrace. Turning to Nathaniel, he smiled.

“Good timing my friend. Once we get the first bit to the carriage, Benjamin can assist you with bringing in the rest.”

Thank the gods, yes! Nathaniel kept his composure and gave Lorenzo a single nod before grabbing a long case that appeared to also be quite heavy.

“My requested assistance will be completed in due haste.” Benjamin bowed and moved towards the exit.

“It was very smart of you to bring gifts.” Charlotte’s gaze followed the case as Nathaniel brought it outside. She was grateful that Lorenzo had thought to bring gifts, especially knowing that the Alidasht appreciated flattery. Though she was afraid to ask what exactly he had picked out.

“Of course. We may be guests to their dinner but they are still guests to our country.”

The gifts weren't the only subject on her mind. She had the urge to ask about something else, even though she knew it might not be wise to do so at the moment. Lorenzo's hands had left her shoulders, meaning he'd soon move on from her. It was now or never. “Umm… Lorenzo?” She looked at him with a thoughtful expression, briefly averting her eyes as if considering her words carefully.

“Yes?” He raised his brows with anticipation. Charlotte then rubbed her arm, her shoulders slacking as if she had let go of an idea that had crossed her mind. “I just wanted to ask if… If you would like to bake cookies with me later?”

“Cookies? Yes of course! We can do the hot cocoa too. It's warm outside but who cares! It'll be an excellent treat after this splendid dinner.” Lorenzo gave Charlotte a confident wink just before he moved around her and grabbed a large paper filled with miniature bouquets, “I hate to ask you to carry anything but this is the lightest load and they happen to be flowers almost as beautiful as you. Almost.” Lorenzo sighed looking at the other bags. “I just wish I paid attention to how heavy all these things were together.” He handed her the bag and grabbed two large sacks for himself.

Lorenzo’s words elicited a big smile from Charlotte,“Can’t wait!” She replied with genuine enthusiasm. She was pleasantly surprised by his joyous energy, especially hearing he had apparently been suicidal earlier. However, it truthfully made the story all more confusing; she supposed that was an issue to ponder later. “...It’s no problem. I can help carry whatever is needed.”

LATER ON...

The carriage glided into the castle grounds and ascended the stone path toward the guest house. Once Benjamin had brought them as close as possible, Charlotte and Lorenzo got down from the carriage. They subsequently made their way inside, with Benjamin and Nathaniel following closely behind, their hands laden with gifts. Charlotte had offered to assist with carrying some of the presents, but her offer was quickly declined.

Once inside, a servant greeted them and offered to guide them to the dining room. The interior of the guest house exuded an air of elegance, though it was more subdued and simple, designed not to clash with anyone's decorative preferences. Charlotte found herself quite taken with the understated charm as she moved through the halls, her eyes observing her surroundings. The walls were made of marble and the floors were consistently covered in red carpeting. They eventually came to a halt before a room with large doors that were pulled open to reveal a rather small dining room. The walls were painted in a dark lime shade of green, and the room had a quaint aesthetic. Charlotte couldn't help but notice how intimate the setting was. This dining room, while not uncomfortably small, would certainly be an echo chamber where words could be heard by all.

Members of the dinner had already found their seats at the dinner table, and though Lorenzo would never voice it, he was glad he and Charlotte weren't the last to show up. He and Charlotte were the honored guests after all… Well, perhaps "mandatory guests" was more fitting. Lorenzo almost imagined himself as one of the horses from today's race as an imagined gunshot rang out to signify the start of a turbulent event.

“Ah, look at this! Good evening!” Lorenzo greeted all merrily as he, Charlotte, Nathaniel, and Benjamin entered the room. “Nathaniel and Benjamin, you can set those down on that table by the window and get going back home. And Benjamin, I think an hour from now will be good.” The two silently did as he instructed, trying to draw as little attention as possible as they moved a few bags and boxes onto the unoccupied table. Lorenzo used this time to properly greet the hosts and other guests of the dinner.

“Your highness, Sultan Raif Kadir. I am honored to have been invited to meet and dine with you and your family. I… I wish it were through better circumstances… BUT like a fuzzy dandelion, we have arrived in an unanticipated setting and will flourish through a time tougher than the hard cobblestone road. Peace be upon you.”

“Good evening, Your Majesty.” After placing the bouquets on the side table, Charlotte took a moment to add her own greeting and gave the sultan a proper curtsy. She also bowed toward each of his daughters. “Your Highnesses. We are grateful and honored to be amongst you.”

“Agreed! It's an absolute dream to see the three Shehzadis looking ever lovely. Women exemplifying both beauty and strength! One of whom was so prepared to help me in the park this morning by striking fear into a deranged scoundrel. Shehzadi Mayet Kadir, I didn't get the chance to give you and your furry friend a proper thank you, but just you wait!” Lorenzo shot her and Nala a wink followed by a smirk. “You and your tiger remind me so much of me and my ferret, Kier… Sadly he couldn't make it this evening.” Lorenzo frowned and lowered his eyes briefly after saying this before recomposing himself a looking at Layla.

“Shehzadi Layla, I must say you are not forgotten and neither is your grace on the ballroom floor. Oh, and that bowtie is wonderful! How do you- nevermind, we can discuss that later. I might be the better dancer but that snake of yours is giving me a run for my money in dress!” He kept up his smile despite the slight intimidation he felt from the woman he had toppled over the night prior. Before his smile could falter, he engaged the third Shehzadi.

“Shehzadi… N-Nahir.” Lorenzo surprisingly recollected. With the hard part of his greeting to her over, Lorenzo proceeded. “I'm afraid we haven't had the opportunity to be formally introduced but I could never forget the angel that wished to have my life spared in the face of many that would have enjoyed witnessing my final hours. Thank you, truly.” Lorenzo hadn't even realized he was taking way too long with these greetings. Nathaniel and Benjamin were taking their leave with Nathaniel giving Lorenzo a single pat on the shoulder as he hoped it would instill some level of competence into the duke.

Charlotte stood, awaiting him to finally finish speaking. Her eyes met the sultans. He hadn’t seemed annoyed quite yet but he didn’t seem overjoyed either. He hadn’t moved to speak yet, his hands folded on the table as he watched Lorenzo. “Should we sit now?” She whispered.

“Shh! We mustn't miss anyone,” Lorenzo hushed. His eyes searched for any of the Shahzade but he found none. There was also a daughter unaccounted for. He'd just make do.

“Again, thank you and your family.” He looked at each of them to include Farim, whom he hadn't met. He gave him a slight bow of the head, assuming he was of some importance. Keeping to the proper order of greeting, Lorenzo turned his attention toward the prince.

“Prince Auguste Danrose, a pleasant surprise. I had a splendid conversation with your older brother this afternoon. To have the honor to see two princes in such a short time.” Then there was Lord Smithwood. Lord Smithwood. You look more rugged every time I see you. Don't outdo me young man,” He chuckled. “A pleasure.” Lorenzo then finally returned his attention to Raif.

“Duke Lorenzo Vikena. Lady Charlotte Vikena.” Raif said slowly, as if tasting their names, his eyes moving between the duo. He finally nodded and ordered, “Sit.” He beckoned them forward with a brief wave. Lorenzo pulled out one of the chairs next to Leo, assuming she'd want to be closest to her childhood friend. “Charlotte.” He found himself still stunned by her appearance this evening. Lorenzo knew he could succeed and keep smiling if he kept her in mind.

Charlotte graciously sat down. “Thank you.” She had then glanced at Leo with a friendly smile in greeting, her eyes traveling to Auguste as well as she spoke, “Lord Leo, I’m happy you are attending with us this evening and It’s nice to see you, Prince Auguste, here too.” As intimidating as it all seemed, it was comforting to have the two of them present here.

Meanwhile, Lorenzo walked from behind Charlotte's chair toward the opposite direction of the Sultan's head of the table. The servant, Riona moved past the duke to get one of the seats pulled out for him but a gentle hand on her upper arm stopped her.

“Thank you, but no need to seat me. I already feel guilty about having my servants do so much today. I don't wish to use another for something I can do quite easily.” Moving past her, Lorenzo took his seat at the other head of the table, opposite to Sultan Raif Kadir.

What a power move.
