Yumeiko no Akame no Kami

Location: Building #1; Ground Floor; Lobby → Breakfast
Interactions: @Xaltwind Miyuki

Her tails swayed gently behind her as she received coveted head pats, but when she opened her eyes, Yumeiko saw something else. Her eyes widened, and, kyuu,” her head flicked back slightly as she winced, then putting hand to her forehead and looking at Miyuki. There was a lecture to go along with that punishment, as well. Her posture shrunk and she nodded meekly before hugging the older fox and nuzzling into her bosom once more, “yes, you’re right. I still feel bad, though..”

She was content to stand with her face buried there, but then Miyuki’s - and then her own - stomach growled, and Yumeiko knew the fluffy comfort had to end temporarily. She lifted herself out of the warmth and smiled at Miyuki with a little giggle, “alright, let’s go eat.”

Twirling some of her tails with some of Miyuki’s as they walked, Yumeiko clasped hands with the larger fox, “I hope none of the other residents around here react to me like that.” Her ears drooped slightly as she considered what her mere presence must be to that woman they’d run into. Just how bad for her was it? Had she spat out blood because she’d been near?

It wasn’t far to the cafeteria, and the smell of food helped her clear her head. Her hand carried Miyuki’s up to her lips for a soft kiss as they entered, “mm, I have a taste for something with.. eggs. I hear there’s a good bread dish where they soak it in, eeh, anno.. custard, and fry it. I forget what it’s called.” The two tails she’d kept free wagged at the delicious sounding treat. She got the two of them a table and worked out what the dish was with the waitress. It didn’t take long at all. A French dish? Huh. And some berry juice.

Qaymu

Bldg 1, Ground floor stairwell > First Floor stairwell landing

Velvet bothered him - not that she was a vampire, he'd ran into many, before. There were VC vampires in Vietnam, newly turned, who tried to drink his blood when the patrol stopped at an abandoned village. It was like watching fireflies as they burned away, not even leaving ash. The idiot butter bars filed a report, which HQ rejected, telling him to stop smoking Mary Jane. Just to be sure, he erased the patrol's memories of it - even Max's. You never knew if a hunter would wind up reading the report and come looking.

She, despite appearances, was more than old enough to survive drinking his blood - but who knew what affect that might have on her? But really, it was she looked so damned... familiar. Had he seen her before? Where? When? Could it have been more than once?

Was it the World's Fair? Maybe the Smithsonian museum? Or was it during one of the wars he fought in? Perhaps one he'd smuggled out, just another station in the monster underground railroad, moving the dispossessed of the war to where they'd be safe.

Movement made Qaymu shift his head to the window, where he saw letters drawing themselves on the fogged glass.

"Huh," he said, nonplussed, then points towards it. "So who's doing that again? Floozie?"

If one were to look past Max, they would see the wolf burying her head in the box of steaks, the wrappers crinkled loudly as she rummaged deeper into the box, practically swallowing the steaks in one bite. She didn't want to miss out on the chance to eat as many of these steaks as she could before someone caught her and pulled her head out of the box. It was when the sound of the gorgon's voice reached Iris’s ears did she finally lift her head up from within the practically empty box.

Thankfully, her pelt was black as night because the blood that was on the wrappers and steaks now soaked the fur around her face, causing it to spike around her head. She peered at Theria from behind Max, pulling her tail in under herself. Iris wasn't afraid of Theria as a person but more of Theria’s position. She was the assistant manager of the building. She may not be able to kick Iris out but she could definitely write her up and too many write ups and the troublemakers would be kicked out of the building. Plus, she could go get the actual manager and that gargoyle, that's someone Iris is a little afraid of.

She tried to shrink down as best she could when Theria turned her eyes on her, looking up at her with bright, wide eyes. She tried to look as innocent as she could manage. She smiled lightly, thumping her tail ever so lightly on the ground. Play puppy. Play cute and innocent. People can't help but love puppies. Be a puppy. She felt she did a pretty decent job at puppy dog eyes. She had been practicing it, after all.

As Qayma walked into the area, Iris let out a loud huff. “More people to see what's going on.” She muttered to herself quietly. She was getting tired from eating all the steaks and it made her a little on the cranky side. Sleep means Iris gets control of the body again and the wolf isn't sure the next time she'll get a chance out, so she fights it like a toddler fighting naptime.

Iris was so relieved when Velvet took the attention away from her. She let herself relax just a bit as the others addressed Velvet. She was no longer the center of any attention and that was definitely how she rathered it, especially when her eyes fell on the damage she had done to Velvet. She saw the broken bone, torn flesh, and damaged muscle and she let out a low whine. She may have gone a little overboard. Sure, Velvet needed to be punished for attacking another resident, but now that she had meat in her belly and was thinking a little more civilly, she had a few feelings of guilt. She had taken it too far. She blamed it on having just come from a night of the full moon and on an empty stomach. It can make her a bit- feral.

When Max called To Iris like a dog and patted his thigh, Iris let her lids droop and she peered up at him from under her lashes. This man did not just call her like a dog. There is no way he's just out here calling her like she's some kind of puppy? Who does he thin- wait, where's he going with the steaks? Iris stook up and gave a stretch with a mighty yawn. Her claws clicked on the ground a moment before she straightened and followed behind Max with a quick trot. “Where you going? I'm not done with those steaks!” She followed him out Into the courtyard, blinking fiercely into the sunlight. Her blue eyes in her wolf form took in the sun differently than her brown ones in human form, so it took her a moment to adjust to the brightness.

Once she could see properly, she pressed her face into the grass and began rubbing the blood off her fur, which then turned into her just enjoying the cool caress of the morning dew and rolling along the grass, her paws in the air for a moment before she went sprawling with her arms and legs spread wide. “You should try this Max! It's so cool and refreshing!” She was breathing slightly heavy from the play as she watched clouds drift by along in the sky.

After a moment, the joyfulness fell from her face and she sighed quietly as she peered over at Max. “I didn't mean to hurt Velvet that bad. I got caught up in the moment.” She paused a moment to look back up at the sky again, staring at the clouds before continuing. “Iris is gonna lock us up now, huh?”

Location: 2nd Building Restaurant -> Courtyard || Interactions: None

The sweet nectar was delivered to his table, Alphonse almost not noticing the chef that brought it. With the clearing of her throat, the moth was pulled from his thoughts and back into the world of the restaurant around him. ”Thank you very much,” there was a light smile given to the woman who bowed to him, before she left him to his thoughts once again.

Building 2 of the Umbra Rose Condo’s was always so quiet, although Alphonse wouldn’t dare complain. It was nice, the silence. It was nothing like the city, so full of noise and smog. They couldn’t even see the stars with all of their lights, and eventually, Alphonse thought, the moon would disappear too. The smog would cover the sky in a permanent haze, his beautiful moon disappearing with it. A wave of despair washed over him at the very thought of the moon vanishing, and he convinced himself a second later that this would never happen. That it was just the imaginings of a very hungry mothman.

Nectar. Right.

Placing a napkin delicately on his lap with one set of hands, the other set of hands gingerly moved to hold the glass cup that his nectar was brought in. Opening his mouth, a long, tube like object began to unfurl, fitting into the cup of clear liquid. Behind the black cloth, Alphonse’s eyes closed with delight as the Primrose nectar began to satisfy him.

His mind began to stray again, to what the rest of the day held for him. It would mostly be sleep, but a walk wouldn’t be bad. Alphonse was hardly ever up during the day, and while the sun hurt his eyes, it would be nice to feel the warmth for a while. Perhaps he would stretch his wings, soak them in the shining rays for a few minutes. Yes, that sounded like a splendid hour well spent.

Finishing up his drink, Alphonse picked the napkin up and gently wiped his mouth, his tongue sliding back in to once again hide away. He gave a silent thanks to the chefs before he stood to go do just what he had decided to do. Stepping out from the restaurant into the sun filled day, he made sure the blindfold around his eyes was as tight as it could be before he went on his merry little stroll.

Eilidh Chiron

Location: Building 2, Courtyard
Interactions: @Morgannis

Eilidh was woken by the sound of her phone's alarm clock, which she tried to ignore for about a minute before groaning. She reached over, checked the time, and switched it off. Back home, she'd always naturally been woken up by natural light leaking through the thin curtains. But this room had modern blinds and Eilidh had quickly come to find that, if left unchecked, she could sleep until almost noon. Thus she had been setting alarms for 8am every day.

She got to her hooves and trotted over to her en suite. Today she was only going to have a human half shower, so she turned on the water and then stuck her human half into the water. She didn't wash her hair today, only her body. Once she finished, she dried off, brushed her teeth, brushed her hair, coat and tail, and threw on a bra, shirt and hoodie. She threw her phone and room key into her fanny pack and slipped it on, before heading out for a jog.

Centaurs needed plenty of exercise, and Eilidh had found plenty of other reasons to start the day off with a run. The routine. The endorphin rush. A healthy start to the day, and a means to stay in shape. Once outside, she broke into a canter, and started a full lap of all three buildings. She was capable of galloping but there wasn't quite enough space for that, and you never knew if there would be another resident walking around the courtyard if you turned the corner.

Which there was right now! She digged her hooves into the earth and ground to a halt in front of Alphonse. She didn't know the Mothman all that well, as he was several floors above her, but she'd seen him here and there and he'd always seemed a nice person if a little quiet and reserved.

"Sorry, almost didn't see you there! Hey, Alphonse. Lovely morning, isn't it? What have you been up to?" she asked cheerfully.

Theria

Location: Building 1: 1st floor
Interactions: @Kuro, @Lemons, @BunniesOfDoom, @LupusIntus, @Expendable

This was definitely a mess. She had previously assisted Arborox in resolving an issue between a leprechaun and a kobold in which the kobold attempted to steal the leprechaun’s pot of gold, but this was even bigger than that. There were two injured, and that’s always a bad thing.

Thoughts were running through her head that she didn’t even notice that the dragon Qaymu had arrived. Layla did, but she also kept quiet so as to not interrupt Theria’s thinking. This was one of her big tests as an assistant manager. She could always call Arborox with an emergency, but she would rather not do that. No… This was her test, and she was going to ace it.

She listened to Velvet’s explanation intently, her eyes still darting between Velvet and Iris while Layla turned her attention to a point near Velvet and gently hissed, letting Theria know that Suzy was still near Velvet. All of it made sense. She had noticed that Velvet was severely needing sustenance when she passed through the front desk, and upon seeing an attack on another resident, of course that Iris would try to protect said resident.

Having a general idea of what happened, now Theria needed to act. First, she needed to make sure that everyone would be safe. Velvet’s injuries did pose a problem. She had apparently fed enough that her consciousness was there, but with the amount of blood she was losing, it was only a matter of time until she had to feed again… And with Max around, that was a big problem.

Luckily, Max himself knew what to do in this situation and offered to leave with Iris. Theria nodded. “That will be best Max. Please contact doctor Duscenia too. Tell her to meet me at Building 1, 205. Slashing Injury.”. Duscenia was the in-house Doctor of the Umbra Rose complex. As a dryad with ample knowledge of monster biology and medicine, Theria was sure that she could help Velvet… and also was a being without blood, so the risk of an attack would be minimal.

Theria’s attention was then taken by Qaymu who pointed towards a window. Theria was slightly startled as she had only realized now that he had been there but her attention immediately went to the window itself. “Thank you Sir Qaymu.” She said while reading the message. “Thank you Lady Krause. Now let’s get Lady Coventry into her apartment. I’ll stay until the doctor arrives at least.”

She approached Velvet while Xena, the more combative of her snakes, was ready to pounce at any sign of danger. She held out a shoulder for Velvet to hold on to should she need it. All of the snakes quickly moved to the side of her neck to help guard it… All of them except one that was peacefully sleeping. “Shall we go Lady Coventry?” She asked, ready to guide Velvet to her room.

Early Morning
Building 1 Hallways > Velvet's Room
Interacting with: @DragonydasTheria, @KuroFloozie Suzy
As Max scampered off with Iris, Velvet rolled her eyes at Theria's message to him, but by the time she spoke, he was off. Doubtless very uncomfortable by the whole situation. "Why bother calling a doctor?" Oh, wait, that was right; vampires of her caliber probably weren't a very common fixture in Umbra Rose, and she'd never been injured enough for Theria to notice, so she probably had no idea. They probably didn't know how formidable she was in the first place. Well, good a time as any to reveal it; she seemed worried and it might help to calm her. "I'm very old, little miss, don't worry. I could be bisected, eviscerated, decapitated, ground to pulp, and burnt to ash, and I'd be back in my crypt by the next morning. There's not a single person on this side of the Atlantic who could hurt me in any way that mattered as long as there's blood around, not unless they're a professional." Still, she shrugged. It's not like a doctor coming by would hurt anything, and Max was already gone. She'd be by regardless, so might as well humor her.

As she trudged up the stairway, letting Theria support her, she was immensely grateful that Suzy was there. She could feel the bloodlust bubbling up within her, threatening to overtake her completely at the exotic scent of the gorgon's blood. To drink until she was sated, with no regard for safety or decency. But the unnatural chill of the ghost's presence was so alien that she remained grounded enough to retain her presence of mind. She'd rather not be a statue today, and she'd already embarrassed herself quite enough. So, as blood continued to puddle on the floor behind her, she kept plodding gamely on. At least she hopefully wouldn't need to clean it.

After what seemed like an eternity, she at long last opened the door to Room 205. Computer humming away in the corner, great tomb of basalt-black stone. But the most important thing at that moment: her fridge. Halfway between a minifridge and a full size model, she flashed over to it almost faster than the eye could follow, displaying speed that she rarely did, and tore the door open.

...Literally, as the hinges gave beneath her desperation and the entire thing ripped away in her hand. But all she had eyes for, all she cared about, were the ten pint-sized bloodbags sitting there. Food. Salvation. All thoughts of decorum lost in her desperate hunger and lacking a functioning left hand, she tore them open with her fangs one after another, guzzling the contents so fast she nearly choked. The excess ran down her chin and body in streams, soaking what little was unsullied of her front entirely. An overpowering surge of warmth and comfort flooded through her as she drank her fill, all of her thoughts lost in the urge to consume.

By the time her hunger abated and she ceased her feast, eight empty bags of blood—eight entire pints, more than enough for two full weeks with mild sunlight exposure under normal circumstances—were scattered haphazardly at her feet, and she was standing in a pool of the stuff. Dropping her exhausted head and shutting her eyes lightly, she inhaled—held—exhaled a few long, slow breaths.

"Okay. Okay. I'm calm."

She wanted nothing more at that moment than to climb into her tomb, lie down, and sleep. But the doctor was still coming, and after the show she'd just put on, it would probably be rude if she arrived and found her patient asleep beneath her excellent security system: a thousand-pound sheet of solid stone. So instead of climbing in bed, she sat down on top of it, still taking those long breaths. It felt so good to not be hungry.

She blinked, looking down at herself and realizing for the first time just how much blood was on her now. Wiping down her hands as best she could, she walked over to her computer, turning on one of the monitors and opening a text document with font large enough that she could read it from anywhere, then returned to her stone seat. In case Suzy wanted to say anything. Then she let out a little self-conscious laugh. "Sorry you had to see me like that. Not exactly the picture of dignity, was it?"

Miyuki no Suzuyami

Location: Umbra Rose Condos, Bldg #1, Ground Floor, Cafeteria
Time of Day: Early Morning
Relevant Cast: @CitrusArms Yumeiko

Miyuki's mood lifted slightly as the two foxes agreed to fianlly go get some food. It improved a bit further when her precious golden goddess-servant snuggled up next to her and let their tails mingle. It was always such a charmingly ticklish sensation. And warm. Very, very warm...

They passed by the stairwell where the incident had happened, but the old fox spirit paid absolutely no attention to it, or those gathered there. It was an unpleasant and undesirable place and it had no place in her mind at this time. So, instead she chatted away with Yumeiko, talking about vague and silly things, scuh as breakfast, and more breakfast.

Breakfast.

Having finally arrived in the dining hall of this strange place, where monsters and spirits and beings from all corners of the world were kept and mingled, Miyuki sat her plump rear down on one of the cahirs. Followed swiftly by her companion. It didn't take long for an attendant to approach their table and Yumeiko was swift to place her order. Miyuki too was no slouch, deciding on her meal with no hesitation.

A few momentx, or minutes, passed by without any incident. Then at last their meals arrived.

The Curse Fox had ordered a serving of miso soup, a small bowl of rice, a tall glass of cold milk and... Three slices of toast. Each with a different topping. There was one with strawberry jam, one with butter and the last had a decadently fried egg on-top, oozing all over the crunchy bread. The black-haired lady's eyes sparkled like diamonds and she let out an excitable little squee at the sight.

And then she partook.

While her eating of the rice and the msio was what you'd expect from a traditional, elegant japanese lady of the court, her table manners and skill with the chopsticks were impeccable. There was a serene and graceful air about, almost as if she was the focus of a painting, eating her food in silent dignity. But the rice and miso could not last forever, nor did they... And that's when the whole scene changed from a serene oil painting, to a silly saturday morning cartoon...

With reckless abandon and no time for poise or formalities, Miyuki began scarfing down the toasted bread as if they were baby ducks being devoured by a hungry pike. Crumbs flew and scattered across the plate and table before her, covered in the ravenously torn asunder remains of the unfortunate and helpless toast who could do nothing to resist the savage beast who had come to devour them! The horror!

... A few minutes later..

A satisfied Miyuki, with butter on one cheek and jam on the other, sat leaning back in her chair, a ridiculously content smile on her face and eyes closed. As if she'd just won a 30 mile marathon or something. Really, she no business looking that smug and proud of herself. Gently rubbing her belly and her tails swaying to and fro happilly, she looked over at Yumeiko once she was done basking in her own, self-induced food-coma.

"So, my lovely. What do you have planned for today? Anywhere you wish to go, or something you wish to do? I might be free to come with you if there is." She coyly said in a playfully low and seductive voice, which really didn't fit with the whole... Y'know, food on yer face-look she had going on right now...

the foxes were here, and one was eating like a savage. "Seriously, am I the only one in this whole place with table manners? Also where did the dragon go?" Nicholas was one table away, Just staring at his plate. "Man, I should make some friends. I've been kind of distant, but... oh well." Nicholas looked at the foxes. "So i heard some fiasco happened in the hall with a vampire. What was it about?" He leaned back in his chair and waited for a response.

Yumeiko no Akame no Kami

Location: Building #1; Ground Floor; Breakfast
Interactions: @Xaltwind Miyuki, @Sky Blue Nick

Yumeiko’s French toast came topped with berries and whipped cream, much to her delight. She hadn’t expected that! She knew Miyuki didn’t like to talk while eating, her elder preferred to eat in silence. While the Kyuubi calmly ate, Yumeiko puzzled out the cutlery she’d been given.

She’d never eaten western foods before, but she could tell right away that the dish she ordered would not fare well with chopsticks. She’d had a few things, just in getting here, but she hadn’t had to cut and eat, previously. A knife was on the right, and a fork on the left, so she picked each up in the respective hand. As soon as she went to cut a piece of the toast with the knife, she found her fork responding by coming in to hold it in place, like a tiny pitchfork. A couple of intuitive tools. Oh, the knife fits under the fork, even!

The first bite was placed into her mouth and she was elated! She let her knife down and cupped her face in her hand as she let out a soft squeal through her closed lips. Her tails wagged happily, and she popped one of the strawberries from her plate in after it, using her fork. Her tails stood out before waggling more, “mmm~, hmhm~!” It was warm and sweet and savory all at the same time, a rich treat for her taste buds and her belly.

The next bite was taken with whipped cream and followed with blueberries. Her noises had calmed, but she was still very much enjoying the meal. This was a fantastic substitute for taiyaki. She cleared her mouth out with a bit of the berry juice before offering, “Miyuki, you’ll have to try this, somet-”

Who was this animal? Miyuki went from her usual dignified consumption to- did one of her crumbs just land on Yumeiko’s plate? The spirit fox looked from the - there, another! - foreign crumb from across the table, back to the once-refined woman. Slowly, Yumeiko started eating the second half of her french toast, watching Miyuki with astonishment. When the elder fox was done, Yumeiko was still eating.

Miyuki tried to sound seductive and suave as she asked what the plans for the day were. Yumeiko nodded and bobbed her head as she chewed, then took a dry piece of her french toast and lifted it across the table to wipe up the bit of jam on Miyuki’s cheek, and then the butter. With condiments now on the piece of food, Yumeiko popped it in her mouth.

She swallowed, then spoke, “well, I’ve got to start forming pacts with the local spirits sooner or later. I think I’d like to just get a good look around, first, though. Do you want to explore, today?”

Before she could get an answer, someone nearby spoke. Something about a “vampire”? Yumeiko looked at the young man who had spoken, repeating the word, “vampire..?” She considered it, having heard the term somewhere before.. perhaps read it? Oh! She’d found a manga about a vampire, once. She couldn’t really tell how much of it was accurate, but drinking blood seemed to be a primary idea.

That cursed woman had thrown up blood. Was it her? “Oh.. I think I know who you’re talking about. Sacred auras seem to harm her.” It saddened the spirit fox, that she would cause someone so much discomfort with just her presence, but.. what was to be done? Shaking the feeling, Yumeiko finished the last of her fried custard bread and drank her juice.

Location:Umbra Rose Condos: Courtyard
Time of Day: Early Morning
Relevant Cast:@BunniesofDoom

Max winced slightly as the massive wolf-creature spoke in a voice not disimilar from Iris', though the muzzle and teeth added a low, bestial tone that always made the hairs on the back of his neck stand on end. A year ago he would have laughed and called anyone crazy if they'd told him about about the residents he now served, but something deep in the human psyche was still in touch with such ancient monsters, curses, things-that-go-bump-in-the-night. It was a constant reminder that around these beings he was, on the most primal level, nothing but prey and it had been the most difficult feeling to overcome in his first months as the front desk worker. Watching her frolick like some puppy at the park, Max knew that his terror had long since morphed into a more subtle discomfort as he came to appreciate the residents of Umbra Rose as more than just 'monsters'.

“You should try this Max! It's so cool and refreshing!”

"You... go ahead, Thelia wouldn't approve of me getting my uniform all covered in grass stains." His deep voice chuckled as he sat heavily on a bench beside the concrete path that ringed the large manicured space. Dark brown eyes followed the werewolf's gaze up to the cloud-speckled sky, the tiny trail of a distant jet plane carving a line through the blue. When had my life come to this...? Max surprised himself by the particular lack of moroseness in that thought as he considered just how not-to-plan his life had gone, though life rarely did respect such narrow human expectations. Still though...

He blinked and looked over at the wolf but when he opened his mouth a reply didn't form. Leaning forward, his mind ticked over the events before he let out a long sigh. "I'm sorry... It was my fault, really." Max said, shaking his head to rid it of the image of Velvet's mangled arm and wolf-Iris' blood-stained teeth. "Iris mentioned you were a bit low on meet and I completely forgot the full moon was before delivery day. I- I should have put an order in earlier..." Forcing a small, apologetic smile, he couldn't quite meet the werewolf's gaze for long. "I'm sure... I'm sure she'll understand that things can get a bit... muddled, when we're hungry. Happens to the best of us, really." He did not think it needed to be mentioned that nearly ripping someone's arm off wasn't typically the human response to 'hangry'.

Suzy rolled her eyes. Floozie? What, were they back in primary school? If you wanted to get under her figurative skin, you had to try better than that.

Ignoring the ignorant, Suzy waited for Theria to grab Velvet, letting the gorgon take the lead. There wasn't much Suzy could do, after all, being a ghost and all. A part of Suzy had felt horrible for not being able to do much more, given Velvet's current state. Sure, Velvet had shown quite the bravado earlier, her confidence blazing at the thought that she was nigh-invincible. But what about that small, tiny percent, where the vampire's constitution would fail herself? What was Suzy to do in that scenario?

That's right. She couldn't do anything. She would've been helpless.

Unless...

No. Suzy shook her head at the thought. Not happening. There had to be another way.

By then, the three of them had arrived to Velvet's room. It was just as Suzy had last left it—dark, desolate, and the epitome of a NEET's dream. The ghost's eyes lingered on Velvet, watching the vampire as she broke loose from Theria and raced to the blood-filled refrigerator, ripping the door right off its hinges.

Keeping her mouth shut, Suzy said, or rather wrote, nothing as Velvet began to down bloodbags like a school kid chugging their Capri-Sun. There was a time and place for words, but not now. Suzy hadn't wanted Velvet to feel like she was judging her; that the vampire was making a fool of herself as blood dribbled upon the condo flooring.

Once the vampire had finished, she moved to her computer, clearly wanting to talk about what had just happened. Following her lead, Suzy flew over to Velvet's side, and began to deliberately manipulate the electrical impulses that radiated from the PC to type her response on the screen. Now was the opportune time to speak.

"I..." Suzy paused. She hadn't felt entirely comfortable with what she was about to say, but chose to say it nonetheless. It was better for the both of them to not avoid it, like Suzy had done for so long. "I know how it feels, Vel. The desperation."

Another pause before the flashing line began to move forward once more.

"My hands were tied when I drowned. I tried so, so hard to swim upwards, but my lungs gave out before I could reach the surface. Sometimes you just can't help but to give in when you're pushed to the limit—I'm proof of that."

As he began his meandering journey through the threefold liminal labyrinth of quiet corridors from Building 3 to the foyer in Building 1, Khalid split his time between three things. First, he kept his pace leisurely and steady, to make sure that he didn’t rock his satchel too much and risk rousing the Shoggoth from its comfortable stupor. Second, he kept a sharp eye out for any sign of activity or anomaly. Anxiously perceptive almost to the point of paranoia, Khalid was determined to miss nothing until he at least reached Building 2. If so much as a puff of smoke began to waft from any of one-hundred-and-twenty-degree corners around here, he would be keenly aware. Nobody who hailed from his vaunted lineage would be caught dead meddling with time, but every rule had its exceptions. Sometimes, the things that lurked out there just got hungry, and in Umbra Rose Condos, the veils could be perilously thin.

Third, Khalid ruminated on what to say and do when he reached the front desk. Every social interaction was, after all, a puzzle to be solved. With sufficient understanding of the pieces involved, one could choose the right series of dialog options to arrive at the desired result. Of course, the fact that the receptionist was a Gorgon would complicate these things. As he walked along, the thin man considered whether or not to use his hand mirror in the upcoming encounter. Avoiding petrification was exactly what it was for, and it would be a waste to not make good use of his preparations for their intended purpose. On the other hand, it would definitely come off as rude. Spotlighting someone’s problems like that tended to be condescending if not outright insulting, even if the person had the sense to be self-aware about them. Miss Lasthena’s glasses ostensibly rendered measures like Khalid’s mirror unnecessary, but he knew as well as anyone that she could simply remove them if she wanted to. Then again, he could -theoretically- do any number of things himself. It was all part of the social contract, and at the end of the day, all anyone could do was hope that everyone else abided by the rules.

Some had to hope more than others, though.

In general, Khalid found it difficult to trust monsters. Human-adjacent monsters, anyway. Just as the frog could trust the scorpion to sting, he could trust the Mi-go to whisper in the dark, and Dark Young to devour sacrifices. But modern monsters, whose ancestral species had adapted to the shifting balance of power by becoming more human themselves, presented a conundrum. Many presented themselves as poor, sympathetic sufferers, dealt a bad hand from birth by fate itself and forced into hiding by cruel humans. As soon as a good enough reason arose, however, they’d abandon their pretenses and pounce. Going ape was simply too great a temptation to pass up. Many humans lived in much the same way, Khalid knew. Living their lives waiting for the right excuse to do what they really wanted without repercussion. For monsters, though, their inherent power -and the resentful pride of a powerful sufferer- made it a bigger issue. They were like addicts who could never get clean, and monstrosity was their addiction. For being like that, dangerous outbursts were never their fault; it was just who they were. And that was the problem.

While traveling through Building 2, Khalid passed by a row of windows that admitted warm daylight from the complex’s centermost courtyard. Naturally, the eruditionist peered through the glass, and when he did he finally caught an overdue glimpse of several inhuman tenants. Of the two, the more eye-catching was a centaur girl that he’d seen before–Miss Chiron. Pleasant and upbeat, she was someone even an apprehensive critic like Khalid could find no fault with. After all, she was the sort of demihuman who only differed from the average person physically, with no inherent risks. If she revealed herself, the public would probably adore her–and if the rumors he’d been hearing about her streaming held water, many people already did. Of course, the same sorts of governments that went and euthanized people’s pet squirrels probably wouldn’t stand for that, but still.

Eilidh wasn’t alone, though, and Khalid’s gaze lingered a moment longer on her companion. It was Mr. Dreary, the Mothman. The thin man made it a point to learn (and document) all the names he could, so that he could address anyone with the same distant politeness if the situation arose, and Dreary was both unfortunately and aptly named. In the morning sunshine and well-tended verdure the gangly, fuzzy, monochromatic cryptid stuck out like a sore thumb, and judging by his blindfold he wasn’t exactly meant to be here, either. Still, maybe even nocturnals needed a little sunshine now and then. Khalid’s own dealings with Alphonse had been very limited on account of their mutual reclusiveness, but the shy Mothman seemed nice enough, and not any kind of threat. If Shoggoth Therapy took off, Khalid wouldn’t mind talking to him. Eilidh probably wouldn’t need it, but who knew. Even if she wasn’t the sort who buried pain beneath a happy smile, streaming could get pretty stressful, and Khalid didn’t plan to turn anyone away.

Eventually, the would-be writer reached Reception. To his displeasure, he found it empty, with Ms. Lasthena absent from her desk. A quick glance at the printer confirmed that she hadn’t received and acted upon his email before leaving, either. Well, no matter. He could wait. Khalid headed over to one of the parlor’s couches and seated himself facing the front doors, his back to the desk. After making himself comfortable, and checking on the Shoggoth, he sat there pondering. Both his writing dilemma and his planned solution to it gave him a lot to think about, and he’d be lying if he said it didn’t have him stressed, but maintaining his composure in the face of danger was a talent of his.

As Khalid ruminated, his eyes remained on the front doors ahead of him, and not just out of apprehension for any incoming monsters. Though unassuming at first glance, this tidy double-doorway was a portal between two very different worlds, and he could still remember the first day he entered through them. It had been quite the task getting through the magic that protected this place from humans, and though he’d gotten more proficient at it during his comings and goings since then, it was never easy. Powerful illusions veiled this place, making sure that passers-by only saw what they wanted and expected to see, ordinary enough to not arouse curiosity and undesirable enough to not arouse interest. That wasn’t the extent of it, though; it was the effect on the human mind that truly safeguarded Umbra Rose Condos. Second thoughts, prior obligations, discomfort and aversion–all rose to the forefront the minute one drew close. Like being put in a microwave, one couldn’t explain what was happening, but one instinctively knew to get out.

Khalid was grateful for that now, though. The very fact that this place repelled humans gave him the plausible deniability he desperately needed. If another tenant saw him, even though he looked human, they couldn’t just assume that he was. On one hand, there were plenty of residents that looked pretty human, and on the other, the presence of one here jeopardized the safety that everyone expected from Umbra Rose Condos. To them, he was a Shoggoth, a rare and poorly-understood horror, and if anyone needed a reminder he would gladly tell them. Those two factors allowed him to weave the Shoggoth into whatever he needed it to be, such as a perfect shapeshifter who could flawlessly imitate the human form, even though that was a far cry from the truth. This was what allowed Khalid to hang out in Reception so brazenly, his refuge in audacity.

Even so, he could not extinguish the fear that gnawed at him like so many insects. The sooner Miss Lasthena got back, the better.

Qaymu

Bldg 1, First Floor stairwell landing > Courtyard

Qaymu watched as first as the other Max and Iris left, then as Theria helped Velvet up the stairs to her room. In the vampire's weakened state, he doubted she'd survive his blood even if the thirst drove her to penetrate his thick skin, so he didn't offer to follow.

He reaches into his trench coat and pulls out his moleskine notebook and quickly found the resident list. "Suzy" he reads put loud, translating the odd script. The language was ancient, even when he was a youngster, so if the notebook got dropped or stolen, it was unlikely anyone could read it.

"I beg your pardon," he says, glancing around, not sure if the ghost was there or not.

Qaymu's body began flickering as his human disguised reasserted itself, turning, he went down the stairs and walked out through the door for the central courtyard where Eilidh was running laps, Alphonse was taking a stroll, and he could see the other Max and Iris having a conversation.

Nodding pleasantly to them, he made it over to building 2, then started climbing up the stairs, his right hand hovering over his trench coat pocket.

After closing the door, he picked up his cat as he made his way over to the display, a giant shadow box of various objects he'd collected over the years. He gave the display a nod, then with one last stroke of the cat's fur, he put her down and fished out the handkerchief from his pocket. His fingers made quick work of the knot, and he carefully placed Max's ring in a blank spot, making sure to hold it with his fabric-covered fingers.

"Now, let's see if we were successful," he murmurs, touching the signet ring with his bare skin.

"Hey!" Max said, still running his hand over the stubble left on his head by the boot camp barber, pointing at Qaymu's mustache with the other. "How come dey didn't cut dat off?"

Qaymu shrugged and grinned. "I don't think they noticed it."

Yes, the memories had been caught, perhaps even a bit of Max's soul with it.

"My friends," he spoke, nodding to the wall and the collected memories, "Rest well and never feel as if you will go forgotten. Not on my watch."

Iris peered over at Max as apologized. She tilted her head to the side in confusion. How in the world was this man linking this morning's events to his own actions and taking accountability for it? When he said it was because they were out of food and Max had been slow to restock their meat supply, Iris let out a hearty laugh. She sat up, bracing herself with her hands planted firmly in the grass. “Oh come on Max! Don't be stupid.” She laughed again as she gave another shake of her head before she let herself fall onto her back once more into the grass. “If we lost control every time we were hungry, every person in this place would be a werewolf or dead.” She used her smaller claw to dig into her jaw, picking meat out from between her fangs. “Don't go blaming yourself for what happened. ” She pulled a piece of beef from the back of her jaws and looked down at it for a moment before sticking it back in her mouth to be eaten.

Off in the distance, sirens sounded and Iris's ear flicked into that direction. Her head snapped towards the sound and within the blink of an eye, she was on her feet and sprinting to the wall of the apartment complex. With one swift move, she drove her claws into the brick of the wall and launched herself on top of it, looking out to see if she could see the source of the sirens. After a moment of searching, she found an ambulance flying through the streets and heading off to some unknown destination to retrieve some poor soul. Humans were just so fragile. She crouched there on the top of the wall, people watching for a moment before she peered back at Max. Max was human. Would they have to one day call an ambulance to come and get him? How long would he be able to actually work in the complex? When would he get sick? Hurt? What would happen when a resident lost control like Velvet did? What if it was Max and not the fox woman? How long of his human life did he even have left? Her brow furrowed in a frown as she watched him a moment. She rested her long arms on her bent knees and eyed him on the bench. If she lost Max, would the complex be able to contain her? Would she be able to contain herself?

“You should let me change you.” She dropped down from the top of the wall, landing heavily in the grass but she didn't step any closer to Max, her crystal blue eyes still locked on him. She wanted to gauge his expression first before she continued but the idea of Max being a wolf like her was causing her to get excited. They could spend the full moon together. She would finally have someone who could understand, true pack. Her tail thrashed behind her as she thought about him being a wolf. “I wonder what color your pelt will be like! Oh, we could share tranquility rooms during full moons! It would be so much fun!” She bound towards him, excitement in her eyes. “I wouldn't even have to bite you hard. Just enough to get my saliva into your blood stream and then we won't ever have to call an ambulance for you when you get sick and old. You won't get sick ever again and you'll age so slowly, you might as well be immortal.” She paused a moment, seeing his face before dropping down on the ground in front of him, her hands in her lap and her eyes soft. She spoke quietly,”You wouldn't have to worry about getting hurt.”

Max was so smart and was a great man. She cared for him deeply and she wasn't sure that if he got hurt, she would be able to keep herself sane enough to not rip the one that hurt him to shreds. She had done it to Velvet and that was for a resident she barely knew. She couldn't imagine the rage she would feel seeing Max get hurt but if he was wolf, or anything really, anything other than human, she could probably keep from killing whoever hurt him. He wouldn't be in too much trouble. He would heal and be just fine. He would survive.

As Paw-ris scaled the massive wall with ease, perching herself like some kind of hairy gargoyle, Max couldn't stop himself from jumping to his feet with a scream caught in his throat. He had to remind himself that Thelia had been very thorough in explaining the illusionary wards that protected Umbra Rose, one of the condos many defensive measures, and that no one even a hundred yards away on the sidewalk would see anything but a non-descript buildings with some sign or another they wouldn't be able to remember in 5 minutes. Still, seeing the massive werewolf there in plain view (from his perspective) was nearly enough to give him a conniption before he busied himself by walking round and round in a tight circle while doing his breathing exercises.

His anxiety was not lessened when Wolf-ris leapt back down with the offer to 'change him' and had his mouth been full of any sort of beverage he would surely have performed the most magnificent of spit-takes. "I-I-I- Well it's- We wouldn't want- That's not-" Max stuttered profusely, his forehead dappled in a cold sweat. The large man instinctively retreated as Howl-ris bound forward excitedly until the back of his knees colided with the bench and he sat down hard once again. She dropped down in front of him, her head still neary level with his. "I... think it's a very kind offer." He swallowed, his voice shooting up a octive or four. "But, I like how I am... right now... as a human." With a great amount of willpower he stirred up the most disarming smile he could muster. "That doesn't mean I couldn't visit the tranquility room during the next full moon..." Max suddenly had to wonder if Ms. Thelia would allow him to install one of those plate-glass security cells in the tranquility room. Maybe a really sturdy shark cage...

Just then the muffled vocals of Chappell Roan's 'Good Luck, Babe!' filled the air between them and Max's hand flew to his pocket until he dug out his phone and silenced the alarm. His shift was officially going to start in 5 minutes. My shift... "Ahh! My shift!" Max suddenly shot to his feet again, quickly scrolling down his contacts list until he found the one he wanted. "O-one moment, Iris!" He pressed the phone to his ear and waited for a single ring before a light whimsical voice picked up on the other end.

"Max! How's my favorite little primate doing this morning?" Max heard the clatter of several metalic objects followed by a frantic cacophony of bird squawks, barks, and growls that had him pulling the phone a few inches from his ear. "No, no! The forceps go in the third drawer from the left. Yes, I know they should be resterilized. Please set them beside the basin there. MARGO! Stop harrassing Dominic! This is a place of work! I don't CARE about 'the natural order of predator and prey' when it's in my clinic!"

"Uh... Doctor Duscenia?" Max said into the phone, wincing again at another series of rattled crashes.

"Oh yes, sorry dear. Now what was it you needed?"

The images of Velvet's arm sprang back into his mind and he couldn't help but wince. "Ms. Coventry needs to see you right away in 205 of building 1. There was an... incident with another resident." Max flashed Iris a supportive smile. "Ms. Thelia asked that you give her an examination."

Duscenia laughed, the sound like a chorus of bells. "Our dear resident vampire? I suspect she'll be well on the mend by the time I arrive but I'll get my kit and pay her a visit. MARGO! WHAT DID I JUST SAY-!?"

The phone call ended abruptly with another explosion of animal calls and a very annoying roar that Max suspected belonged to a rather ornery Bengel Tiger that typically worked the clinic's check-in "Sorry." He said, pocketing the phone and turning back to Iris. "I should probably get to the front desk..."

Alphonse had been, as always, in his own head when he heard the faint galloping coming his way. It wasn’t loud enough to draw him out, though, as he stared off into space, his pace all too slow. The sun was quite nice, and his wings were unfurled, soaking in the rays. Brilliant browns and grays shimmered, and a bit of blue almost seemed to reflect from the light.

Turning once he heard a voice, there was a slight noise of surprise that left his mouth. The centauri girl that lived on the first floor of his building. Oh, what was her name? Elida? Edila…? No, no neither of those were it. He wracked his brain for a moment, trying his best to remember before... Oh! Eilidh?

”It is no problem, Eilidh. I am quite well,” one pair of arms hung to his side, while the other pressed their fingertips together. There was a light smile on his face as he turned to her fully, his whole body pointed in her direction with engrossed anticipation of their conversation. “It is quite a lovely morning! I am not often out and about for ones such as these, so it is a nice change of pace. I had a lovely breakfast in the restaurant just now, and am having a bit of a morning walk. I…Cannot honestly remember the last time I was out in the sun, so I think it would do me a little bit of good,” there was a soft laugh from the mothman. “But it has been nice. How has your morning been treating you so far?” By now his wings had curled back up against his back.

Theria

Location: Building 1: 1st floor -> 205 -> 2nd floor halway
Interactions: @Kuro, @Lemons

As she helped the wounded vampire up the stairs, she listened carefully to Velvet. Of course, Theria knew that old vampires weren’t killed that easily, but every time a resident was hurt, Doctor Duscenia had to be called. Even if by the time she arrived the resident in question was completely healed.

“Sorry. It’s protocol. Any injured resident must be looked at by Doctor Duscenia. No exceptions.” She said as she helped carry Velvet. Xena meanwhile, was eyeing Velvet really carefully. She knew that, as a little python, she wouldn’t be able to actually defend against Velvet, so she took a position right next to Theria’s ear, ready to grab the glasses should the need arise.

As they entered, Velvet quickly darted away from Theria, which took Xena a bit by surprise. Theria watched as Velvet completely destroyed her own mini-fridge in a desperate rush to get the sustenance she desired. “I’ll need to tell Max to order a new one…” She said to herself.

Theria watched as Velvet tore through the stash of blood, but she stood silent by the doorway, letting the vampire feed itself. While the Vampire fed, Theria took a quick glance back to the hallway, hoping to spot doctor Duscenia. There was no doctor, but there clearly was a very distinct trail of blood that led directly to the room. She made a mental note to call the cleaning crew as soon as she had the chance.

Duscenia’s lateness was strange however. As a Dryad, Duscenia could appear at any location where there was nature, and the potted plants by the stairs were not dead… At least they didn’t appear to be dead… Did Max forgot to call the doctor?

As Velvet ended her feeding spree and turned on the monitor, Layla hissed, telling Theria that Suzy was near the computer. She thanked Layla and took some steps forward, leaving the door slightly open for the Doctor to enter when she arrived.

“Dignity? Come on, you have seen me multiple times rushing to get the antidote and de-petrify Max. We all have bad days. Still, I think I, as the assistant manager, could have prevented this, so I’m going to see if it’s possible to have a fridge by the entrance with emergency supplies” She said as Suzy began writing on the computer. Layla was paying attention of course, and in the moment, a wave of sadness reached Theria.

Snakes couldn’t cry, but her snake’s feelings sometimes leaked to Theria… as well as to the other snakes. She took a look at the computer… Theria didn’t know the story of Suzy. She never bothered to ask. And now that she knew part of it, she couldn’t help but let some tears drop.

As she was about to say something, she heard a knock on the door. Theria looked back to see that Duscenia had finally arrived.

“Excuse me. I heard a vampire here needed a check up. Even if it’s going to be a very quick one.” Said Duscenia with her usual whimsical voice.

“Finally. Doctor Duscenia, please make sure Lady Coventry is fine. I’ll need to go contact some more staff.” said Theria as she slithered back towards the door. “You’re in good care Lady Coventry. I’m going to see what I can do about that fridge I mentioned. Have a good day.”

As Theria left the room, she closed the door behind her, letting the Dryad do her magic. She slowly slithered towards the stairway but then stopped. “Layla… Is there anyone?” She whispered to her snake. Layla gave a low hiss, letting Theria know that there was no one around. Theria took that moment to face the wall, remove her glasses and clean the tears that had started to accumulate on her eyes as the snakes formed a curtain around her face, trying to prevent any accidental looks towards the Gorgon’s eyes. She didn’t dare spend too much time like that. Someone could arrive at any moment, so after cleaning the tears, she put her glasses back on and took a deep breath, continuing on her way back to the main lobby.

Ryū woke herself up with a loud snore. She sat straight up, startled at the loud offending noise, and looked around for any potential threat. Finding none, save for the surprised faces of the handful of patrons currently dining in the canteen, she calmed down somewhat and took in her surroundings proper. She had fallen asleep after eating, which shouldn't have come as a surprise as she usually napped after meals. The amounts of food she had to eat put a bit of strain on her magical disguise after all, evident in the bulge in her belly. Then there was the drool on her chin, of course. She wiped it off with the back of her hand, smacking her mouth. Had she been speaking with someone? Maybe. Oh well, couldn't have been the most stimulating of discussions if she'd nodded off while talking. But there, look, he was still around! She grinned at him half lidded, rubbing the sleep out of the corner of her eye. Ehe~, she giggled, Whoopsies. Fell asleep. You were saying?

But then she noticed two of the other patrons, sitting a bit further off. They had these pointy ears and big fluffy tails, looking all cute and stuff. Ryūs face lit up, her eyes snapping open to her usual unblinking predator gaze, and she pointed at them gleefully with a trembling finger. Look! she exclaimed, Puppers! Adorable little puppy-people! I didn't know we had those! Trying to make eye contact with the pair, she got up off her chair and leaned forward with a hand on her knees, trying to call them over with her finger. Come, come, pwetty liddle puppers! she cooed, her face locked in a wide toothy smile, Want a scwatch behind the eaw? Aww~, I could just eat you right up!

Miyuki no Suzuyami

Location: Umbra Rose Condoso, Bldg #1, Ground Floor, Cafeteria -> Bldg #1 Ground Floor Hallways
Relevant Cast: @CitrusArms Yumeiko, @Sky BlueNicholas, @Red Wizard Ryu

With an overly cutesy 'Hyañ' noise as Yumeiko wiped her cheeks off with her french toaste, Miyuki's tails gently wagged in a leisurely fashion. It appeared that having gotten some yums in her tums had done wonders for her mood. Well, that and getting away from the lunatic lecherous woman who'd suddenly decided to treat her as a walking, breathing Happy Meal™. Unfortunately, Yumeiko's response to the inquiry of the elder fox made the latter pout in dissatisfaction.

"Boo~ We just got here and you're already thinking about work?" Which was an absolutely normal and respectable thing to do if you were a mature and responsible adult who wanted to operate as a functioning member of society. Which is to say, it wasn't Miyuki's cup of tea. Like, at all.

But before the black and golden foxes could continue their personal discussion, an unfamiliar voice barged in and cut through the sparkly, pink background-with-floating-in-the-air-bubbles moment. Miyuki's eyes narrowed immediately at the offender.

Some man.

Some random guy.

Some unimportant, unrelated, unknown, undesirable chump.

How dared he interupt breakfast flirting times? Why she oughta--

... And then he said somehting unexpected. He made a comment about something called a 'vampire', and that it had been in a fiasco. What was that? A vam-pyre? A vamp-ire? The term was unfamiliar, as most of the terms used by these westerners. The black haired fox let eyes linger on the drab-looking fellow, as he didn't seem particularly invested in the conversation he had started. Leaning back and away from the people he was trying to talk to, how flippant and nonchalant coudl you be? Miyuki decidedly already didn't like this fellow. Luckily, Yumeiko answered first, and somehow amnaged to piece together what this guy was talking about.

Ah, so he wsa talking about her.

Miyuki's eyes narrowed even more and her playful expresion from just moments ago was now gone. Replaced instead by an icy, stern, expressionless face that seemed to yell: Bruh, don't ask about stuff that's none of yer bees-wax.

"Yes, it was a fiasco. Do residents of this place greet all newcomers by trying to eat them? If I recall, we were told this would be a safe place to live." Miyuki's voice was.... Unamused... And she used a dainty finger to point at the bandaid on her neck.

But before things could proceed, another new and unfamiliar voice chimed in. This one... Far more engaged and interested in making contact and holding a ... Conversation...? Could you even call it that? Like, she was actualy trying to coax the two foxes over as if they were lap-dogs or something. And while this sort of silliness may have gone over well had Miyuki still been in her playful mood from before, the fact that the lean-back-in-his-chair-while-trying-to-chat-up-girls-guy had soured her disposition didn't make the curse-fox appreciate this unfamiliar little bratty girl's ridiculous shennanigans either. So, she shot her an mean side-eye, but didn't respond, instead foldng her arms infront of her (ginormous) bosom and shifting her legs.

"I think I'm done with breakfast for today, Yumeiko." It was a bad sign when Miyuki used the other fox's actual given name, rather than a nickname. It usually meant the taller spirit fox was upset. "If you go exploring around outide, be careful. I'd like to see what the rest of our new home is like, and what or who the other neigbhours might be." It was very difficult to tell if she actually meant this though, given the flat and dry way she delivered the words. But it was at least clear she ahd no intention on joining Yumeiko for a stroll out into the wide wild unknown world beyond the condos just yet.

Leaning over and giving the golden-haired priestess-fox a small smooch on the forehead, the black-haired bombshell stood herself up, gave a quick, polite bow in the direction of the cafeteria staff, and then proceeded to make her way towards the exit of the dining hall. But hwere to go from here...? Not to the stairwell, that was for damn sure. That man-sized leech might still be there.

Perhaps she could explore the courtyards around the buildings. Getting a bit of morning sun may be refreshing and rejuvinating... ANd wash away some of this morning's bad after tastes...
