"Humanity takes great pride in three things. Their willpower, their greed and their mortality.

Their will and endless greed allows them to grow and accend past other creatures
But their mortality denies them divinity

It's a delightful purgatory between being Fallen and being Divine"

"Correct! Surprising, isn't it?" Catherine said, almost as if Srikandi had answered some quiz, chuckling as shementioned the Gremarre's royal family.

Truth be told, Catherine's 'connection' to Gremarre's royal family was something that would normally, be incredibly difficult to believe to people who weren't inside the academic society or were part of Gremarre, given her reputation and how... 'problematic', pretty much everything about her was. That said, neither the royal family nor Catherine herself made any real efforts to hide that fact. After all, Catherine was, regardless of all rumors, regardless of her problematic personality, undeniably, a genius, definitely someone like the royal family could make use of, while at the same time, keeping some kind of 'leash' on her, or at least feeding the beast in order to prevent it to cause any havoc.

"I know a lot of people who would be very happy to see that happen." she said with a mocking smile as Srikandi mentioned that there would be consequences if she was lying.

"Unfortunately, It is as real as it gets." she said, grabbing the bronze emblem from one of her pockets and showing it to Srikandi.

"Quite the useful little piece of metal. Most authoritie will even refrain from bothering me with useless stuff like searcing for weapons, dangerous substances or trying to take those away from me, when they inevitably find them on my posession when I show it to them. It's great." she said, laughing as she put it back into her pocket once again.

Just as she said that though, Catherine noticed how Srikandi called the half-orc a pirate, which made her turn towards him again, with a renewed interest in her eyes.

"Oh, a pirate? Those are always fun. It's never boring when they're included." she said, raising an eyebrow as she looked at the half-orc.

"Hm, wait a second... I think I've seen your face before... Mr. Fuentes, if I recall. There used to be a LOT of wanted posters about you on most ports. It seems both of us have quite the reputation, huh?" She asked with an amused chuckle.

"Finally! I was starting to get bored." Catherine said, stretching herself as she got up from the chair, following Srikandi and the rest of the group as they gave the first steps of their 'journey', heading towards the ship that would take them through the Cijatung river.

It was only after a few hours of travel that they had finally arrived on their destination. Thanks to how experienced the captain was, the trip was mostly uneventful, which also meant it was incredibly boring. Catherine spent most of the time either napping or double checking the calculations about where the meteor landed, both as a pastime and to ensure they wouldn't end up in the wrong place due to someone's incompetence.

"From explosive and incendiary mixtures to toxins and healing elixirs, yup. Everything is here." Catherine said as she disembarked the ship, making sure she didn't leave any of the dangerous solutions she had prepared behind.

"No need to tell that twice... Not only the terrain is horrible to traverse, but the creatures that live around these parts are really troublesome to deal with, according to the reports I've read about the area." Catherine said as Srikandi warned for everyone to be careful.

...

After hours of walking, the only big obstacle they managed to find so far was the horrible terrain. From the tales and reports she heard about that area, the place should be teeming with dangerous creatures. The fact that they found so few thus far meant that either the meteor scared them away, which was a reasonable theory for smaller creatures, but it was highly unlikely for the bigger predators or that there was something in the meteor that was in fact, attracting the area's bigger predators...

Regardless of the theories she might have, it was true that the sun was already setting when they finally found, or better, were found by something. The alert came from Srikandi, whom raised her fist after she heard a rustling sound coming from the foliage around them. Nodding to Srikandi as she warned them, Catherine stood silent, paying close attention to the noises around them.

The never-ending water, the constant rocking of the boat and the strong sun above their head were definitely helping to make the trip even more miserable to the poor Myra. While the tricks and hints Astra gave her did help with the seasickness, there wasn't much she could do to run away from the sun. Even if she was a bit more used to it than Vrexen, whose reaction was really amusing to watch, it still wasn't exactly comfortable for her to be exposed to the sun like that, which made even sleeping hard for Myra.

Incredibly bored, Myra kept trying to find things to do to help relieve her boredom and end the trip faster. From walking around the ship, to using her tail to make waves in the water as the ship moved, she did everything she could at least once and after she got bored of everything else, she turned her attention to the hippocampi.

Much to the poor creatures' dismay and to Astra's misfortune, Myra soon found the distraction she needed from the trip by poking the hippocampi with the tip of her tail, provoking them or investigating them, curious by what exactly they were. Every time she poked or approached the hippocampi, it made the boat give a small jump forward as they tried to swim away, scared of her. While Astra did shoo her away again and again, Myra had quite literally, nothing better to do so she kept going back to the hippocampi after Astra got distracted and took her eyes off her.

Her constant poking and harrassing of the hippocampi soon gave Myra an idea though. If every time she touched them, they swan a bit faster, if she scared them a little bit, they would swim even faster and Myra would be free from that annoying trip sooner. With Astra getting distracted once again, Myra found the perfect opportunity to put her plan into motion as she sneaked nearby the hippocampi, before faking a lunge at them while showing her teeth and claws.

Her plan went wonderfully well at the first moments, despite Astra's shouts. Terrified as they saw her, the hippocampi immediately tried to swim for their lives, the sudden acceleration making Myra fall to the ground. For a few seconds, the boat almost doubled it's speed as Myra, amused, looked at Astra and Vrexen, proud of her plan. That was, before she heard the loud snapping noise and the boat began to slow down. One of the hippocampi, due to how terrified it was, had struggled so much that ended up breaking the restraints, setting him free.

Myra only had enough time to give a single glance at the hippocampi before it quickly disappeared under the waters before she looked at Astra with a guilty expression.

Unsurprisingly, Myra was harshly scolded for her little 'stunt' back in the boat. Fortunately, the atmosphere soon got better once they arrived into Aldrakh. While Myra was a bit wary about the green-skins, having already seen a few of them back in Daka's forests and knowing how easily they turned violent, she was happy that she and Vrexen could move around much more comfortably than they did before in Yenworth.
With a mix of waryness and curiosity, Myra moved around Aldrakh carefully, trying to hold herself back from wandering away from Vrexen and Astra.

Faye smiled as she nodded towards Madeleine before she made her way to Morgana, who was still recovering herself from what happened. Truth be told, Faye did feel a bit guilty for not only not being able to help against the mage after he turned into that abomination, but because it was very likely that one of the reasons why Morgana collapsed was because she wasn't wearing her hat.

"Hey, Morgana! Thank you for helping me back then. Your hat is a bit... strange. I mean, it feels a bit strange, but it definitely helped a LOT. I don't think I would be okay at all if you had not put it into my head. Also, I know you probably had to go through a lot fighting without it on so, thanks again!" Faye said, looking at her hat a bit with a curious expression before she handed it to her.

"Also... I'm sorry that I wasn't able to do much against that mage after he turned into that... abomination. I promise I'll make it up for you somehow... I know! Do you like sweets? Ice cream? Oh, maybe cake? We could go get one after we go back to the HQ! My treat, of course!" Faye asked, with an excited expression, just before they got ready to return to the HQ. Sure, she did want to thank Morgana in a more meaningful way, but she also really, really liked sweets.

Already inside the car, Faye heard as Amanda praised the other agents for their capabilities and talked a bit about the mission. The headpats Amanda gave her for her being able to control herself despite the outburst of eldritch energy did help her feel a bit better and definitely made her happy. After all, she wasn't like the other agents, who had training and experience. In fact, when Faye thought about what happened, she still did really well, especially for someone with no formal training as an agent.

As the group arrived on the office, Faye was about to head out herself after Amanda said they should get back to the office at 10am when she heard her mentioning something about going to the town herself, inviting anyone who might want to go too and even asking if Morgana wanted to go with her too.

"You are going to the town? I want to go too! My sister often used to tell me of a few places around here that sell fantastic sweets when she came home from her travels! Although, I don't really remember where they are, as I never came to Germany myself..." Faye said with a thoughtful expression as she looked to Morgana and Amanda after she got closer to them.

"But that isn't too big of a problem, since we have a very good guide with us, right Morgana?" Faye asked with an excited smile.

"Perfect. It will save a lot of time on explanations." Catherine said with a satisfied smile as she looked to Srikandi, after she mentioned her surname.

It seems the famous 'Ksatria Naga' knew exactly who she was. While she did vaguely remember working with Srikandi in Gremarre once, it was just a single time and Catherine didn't care to remember about it. When Srikandi asked about the Gremarrian Academic Society, inquiring if they would pay for any collateral damage, Catherine couldn't help but let out an amused laugh.

"The Gremarrian Academic Society? Hah! Those decrepit, envious old men would rather see me hanged instead of lifting a single finger to help me." Catherine said in an amused tone.

"The ones I'm working for are just a bit more powerful and influential than the Academic Society... People who have a lot more at stake with the meteor, given it's potential to shift the power balance between the kingdoms of Friestan than a bunch of scholars, worried only about their own names, their fame and their pride." Catherine said with a mischievous smirk. While she didn't really say who she was working for, it wouldn't be that hard for Srikandi to figure it out if she thought a bit about it. It was almost as if Catherine only didn't say it out loud in order to make her think.

Turning her attention towards Anki, Catherine got surprised seeing her greetings and introductions being made with such politeness and a pure smile, without any malice. Catherine couldn't decide if she thought of Anki as naive or someone who refused to judge others solely based on rumors, but it was refreshing meeting someone like that for a change. Catherine was tired of meeting people who were either too envious, proud or were unable to hide their fake smiles and their ulterior motives. Honest people were very hard to come by, especially for someone with Catherine's talents.

"The pleasure is all mine, Anki. You can call me just Catherine." She said with a small bow towards Anki.

Just as she finished greeting Anki, Catherine heard the knocks on the door before it opened, revealing the fourth member of their team. Standing at over six feet tall, the half orc had a strong presence, which only became stronger thanks to the tattoos and piercings, gaving him a wild and tough appearance.

"It seems one more member has arrived to our little 'party'." Catherine said, nodding to the half-orc as he entered the room.
Karina Frost

Karina couldn't help but to frown at Chres' reply. While it was true that she couldn't say she 'understood' everything Chres went through, what he lost and his thoughts, in her opinion, those kinds of thoughts were only useful to further throw someone into a spiral of depression, which would, in turn, make it even more difficult for them to find happiness and a reason to live. It is a vicious cycle.
Besides... Having a team member with that sort of mentality could turn out to be a risk to the rest of the team and considering their situation, more risks were the only thing they didn't need.

"Take it, Chres. This jade candle is one of the few we have remaining and now, you will be responsible for it. If you need a reason to live, do it for your companions." Karina said, with a serious expression and a firm tone.

"Remember, you are not alone. Stay strong, Chres." Karina finished, putting her hand on his shoulder as she nodded at him.

While it certainly wasn't some emotional speak about how life was worth living, Karina already had dealt with similar situations before when training rookie soldiers. While Chres wasn't exactly a soldier, Karina hoped that it would give him some motivation to keep going.

Watching Karina's speech, Akai couldn't help but give a small smirk. Even though Karina sometimes gave off that cold and distant feel, she did care deeply about her companions. Even if it was in a rather... 'militaristic' way.

"Indeed..." Karina said after a moment when she heard Jen mentioning the salt.

"The Sightless have proven again and again to be rather... tricky to deal with. As you said, not only they now know we also know of their weakness, but our supplies are scarce... Especially now that the Kharu-Natjer are gone. We might have to do some magic with the little we have..." Karina said as she got the small pouch of salt she received from the Kharu-Natjer.

"Even though we only have a little, it might be just what we need to level up the playing field. We need to make sure to use it well." Karina said, sighing as she put the pouch of salt back on one of her pockets.

The notice that the infamous 'Walking Disaster' Catherine would be the one representing Gremarre to investigate the meteor incident was received with mixed feelings. The academic community of Gremarre could be clearly divided between those who begrudgingly understood the reason behind her being selected for that task, due to how capable she was and those who were outraged by the fact that someone who could as well be branded as a criminal would be the one to represent their proud Gremarre. In the other hand, most of the staff members and at least half of the adventurers that frequented the Adventurer's Guild branch in Gremarre were ecstatic. Even though Catherine herself had been holed up at her bunker-like lab, immersed in her research for the last week, every time she got out, either in search of ingredients or requests to take at the guild, the staff members held their breath with a sense of foreboding. Knowing that such journey wouldn't be a short one, that meant they wouldn't have to deal with her for at least a few months.

Regardless of what the academy, the adventurer's guild or even the population thought of Catherine having been chosen for the task, the royal family knew well how critical and relevant that event could be not only to Gremarre, but to the power balance between the kingdoms of Friestan. While their relationship with the human kingdoms was a somewhat amicable one, the Gremarre royal family was particularly worried about the Holdlands. Should the Dwarves be successful in making any significant magical or technological advance thanks to the meteor, Gremarre would be in a precarious situation should them resolve to use their newfound power to pressure them.

Unsurprisingly though, Catherine didn't give a damn about neither the commotion that the academic society was making nor what the adventurer's guild thought of her. For Catherine it was an unique opportunity of investigating an once-in-a-lifetime event. Catherine herself definitely wouldn't let such chance pass, regardless if she received permission or not, so being able to do so legally and with the blessings of the royal family was definitely one less headache she might have to deal with later.

The trip to Cendana in Pataliputra was a rather uneventful one. With most problems that involved documentation or bureaucracy being resolved with a single flash of the bronze badge containing the Gremarre Royal Emblem which identified Catherine as an adventurer working directly for the Gremarre Royal family, the trip was almost a boring one. Fortunately, thanks to the excitement Catherine had as she thought about the meteor and it's possible contents, she didn't have time to think about being bored. From new alloys, metals, minerals and substances inside the meteor's body to even biologic matter, the possibilities were endless and she wanted to be sure she wouldn't miss an opportunity because she wasn't prepared.

Upon arriving at the city of Cendana, even though it was her first time visiting it, Catherine could clearly see that the city was busier than ever. In fact, if it wasn't for the bronze emblem the Gremarre Royalty gave her, she would still be outside, waiting on the queue to enter the city. Upon entering Cendana, the first thing she was met with was the uncountable merchants and traders, offering their wares to the adventurers in the marketplace area. From weapons and armor to food and camping supplies, the amount of merchants and traders that were flooding the city only lost to the amount of adventurers that were roaming the streets.

Surprisingly enough, the Adventurer's guild wasn't as busy as Catherine had expected, seeing the amount of people that had gathered in the town of Cendana. The very second she stepped inside the guild, she could feel the burning stares of not only the guild staff, but a few of the 'adventurers' inside, which did seem to be suspiciously well behaved and disciplined. Much more than the common adventurers she was used to. Raising an eyebrow, Catherine couldn't help but wonder if the 'warm welcome' was for her or some big-shot that might be present...

Completely unfazed by the stares, Catherine simply walked to the counter, stopping just in front of a nervous-looking young man. The way he looked around, searching for his superiors as Catherine stopped just in front of him, putting the bronze emblem on the counter with a loud clack. Already impatient due to the amount of people she had to push away while coming to the adventurer's guild, Catherine quickly became annoyed not only with the time the young man was taking, but due to how fidgety he was.

"What's the hold up now...? You see the emblem, right? You know just how hard it is to counterfeit these things..." she said, with a heavy, exhausted sigh.

After the nervous staff member pointed to a door in the end of a corridor, Catherine looked at the boy, sighing and shaking her head in disappointment. Just as she began making her way though, another one of the staff members blocked her way, putting his hand in front of her as she pointed towards her overcoat.

"I'm sorry, but you will have to leave the... umm... explosives... here." he said, pointing towards some of the vials that were hanging.

"Oh please, go ahead. Half of these liquids are extremely unstable compounds. Some explode, others burn uncontrollably when in contact with oxygen and a few of them will immediately vaporize into an extremely corrosive gas... The others are incredibly toxic and poisonous..." She said, taking one of the vials, with a dangerous looking, bright green liquid inside, pointing it at him.

"You have around... One in 43 chances of finding the healing potion, SHOULD you open something you shouldn't have or drop something... Considering it won't immediately kill or incapacitate you and the others around." She said with an acid smirk.

"Do you want to try your luck? No? Then GET. OUT. OF. MY. WAY." she said, pushing the staff member away, slamming him into the wall as she passed by

Catherine entered the room without any hesitation, not even considering knocking. The moment she did so, she couldn't believe what she was seeing inside. While one of the adventurers was a well known name, known as Ksatria Naga. The other was no one other than one of the famous 'doll princesses' from Oberia.

"That explains why the staff is so nervous with my arrival..." Catherine said with a chuckle as she entered the room, certain that both of them were able to hear the commotion when she entered the building.

"Ksatria Naga. Your fame precedes you." she said, looking at her with an amused expression before she turned towards Anki.

"And you..." Catherine said, approaching Anki.

"One of Oberia's famous 'doll princesses'... How intriguing..." Catherine said as she walked around Anki, looking at her with the sharp eyes of a brilliant alchemist.

After a brief moment, satisfied after observing Anki, she pulled a chair and sat down, looking at both women that shared the room with her.

"I'm Catherine, an alchemist." she said with a smile in a short and simple introduction, purposefully avoiding mentioning her surname and the 'nickname' that she received as an adventurer, curious to see if any one of them knew who she was.
I got the seal of approval for her!! XD

Kalla

Maeve let out an acid, sarcastic laugh as she heard Kistal's words, unfazed by his threats and his posture. Despite that, her hand was still on her rapier and both her eyes and the temperature, which was rapidly dropping around her were a clear, nonverbal warning to both Kistal and anyone nearby.

"Thieves, murderers and liars are indeed all birds of the same flock, aren't they?" she said, looking to Kistal with a disgusted expression.

"It is amusing how your attitude serves only to further reaffirm all the prejudice and reputation the beastmen have. I wonder if you are even aware of that..." she said.

"Without even a modicum of education or respect, you see everything that happens as an affront against your 'kind' and, true to the reputation your kind has, your first answer is insults, threats or even violence..." Maeve continued.

"I wonder how much of an inferiority complex one should have in order to think that a traveler, a complete stranger, entering an inn and politely asking for something to eat and drink was calling him a 'servant'. You owe waiters an apology, don't you think so?" she said with a sarcastic chuckle, referring to the first time she met him after arriving on Kalla.

"Oh, and you should be very careful with your assumptions about me... Many have paid dearly for thinking I am just a naive little princess. I am proud of who I am, of my name and my hometown. Tundral stands proud and mighty and will continue to do so, despite what happens in the outside world and I am a reflection of that. While I am definitely above crude and barbaric beasts like yourself, I am not afraid of resorting to violence when needed. The rapier I carry isn't just for show." she finished, with a cold stare towards Kistal.

"Ignorantia legis neminem excusat. Ignorance of law excuses no one. I care not who it is or where it came from, the fact that it does not know law doesn't make it any less wrong for it to have invaded my privacy and stolen my posessions. Be it my rapier or even the silk from my shoes, even if it had stolen a piece of paper, it doesn't matter. Would you all say the same if someone arrived on Kalla, killed someone and gave you a similar excuse?" she said, this time addressing not only Kistal, but Allanon and anyone else who spoke. Her hostility clearly extending to them as well instead of just Kistal.

"You were all so quick to turn against me that you ignored the fact that I never mentioned I would kill anyone. Punishing is different from killing. If I didn't know how to control myself, all the arrogant and ignorant nobles who dared to duel me back in Tundral would be either missing limbs or worse." she said with an acid tone.

As Suzune shouted and Allard arrived, Maeve's disgust with the entire situation and how outraged she was with everything couldn't be more apparent. By now, a thin layer of ice began covering the ground around her, quickly expanding outwards as the situation continued to take such a ridiculous turn.

"You should lower your voice when speaking to me, Suzune. I am merely defending myself from someone who is clearly threatening me. Or should I simply forgive them and let them threaten me because some creatures do not have the concept of 'education' and 'courtesy'?" Maeve said, completely unfazed by the gust of wind coming from Suzune, which only made the ice around her react even more violently, it's surface cracking and ice growing from beneath.

"We have known each other for only two days, Allard. Don't you dare tell me you 'know my heart'. If you truly did, I wouldn't be hearing those words. Even after everything that I did for this town, despite being a complete outsider, I am still treated like this." she continued.

"While the theft does annoy me, the fact that I was treated like this, despite risking my own life for this town is what enrages me. I will not stand by after being disrespected like this. You were all so quick to turn against me and chastise me, not even bothering to hear my words." she said, shaking her head, disappointed as she began walking away.

"I didn't bring much with me, my room is already empty. My stay was already paid for and the silk that was stolen from me should be more than enough compensation for any inconvenience, given it's price." she said towards Suzune and Allard as she began walking towards the exit.

As she was doing so, she couldn't help but hearing Bizdil speaking about some kind of treasures he wanted to gather before exitting the inn. While Maeve didn't really care about what happened to Bizdil, the story about the artifacts, including how many people sought them for their own reasons and the summoning of a certain 'Vanishing Kingdom' wasn't ignored by Maeve. Those were informations that she had to deliver to the Queen of Tundral. She wouldn't just stand idly while her country could potentially be invaded... It would be prudent to find a way to send this information directly to the Queen in a safe and discreet manner.

Faye didn't understand the words Madeleine said, but she could feel the magic she was using, how her mana permeated and moved through her body, delicately moving her own mana inside her, slowly putting order to the chaotic flow, thanks to the exposure to eldritch energy. Faye could feel the fragments of eldritch energy being moved inside her body, gathering together as they were moved to her feet, before being expelled. While it was the first time Faye had received such treatment, the moment it was over, Faye's breathing immediately became calmer. She couldn't feel the influence of eldritch energy on her body anymore. With that done, it was but a matter of time until the flow of mana inside Faye went back to normal.

"The Shattering... I only came to know of that name after a good while... I was only twelve years old when it happened." Faye said, with a grim expression as Madeleine asked what she had felt when it happened in 1989.

"I was completely oblivious of what was happening in the Moon at that time, but the eldritch energy I felt almost completely broke me. Both my magic and my mind..." she continued.

"I have very little memories of that day, but what I was never able to forget what I felt back then..." she finished, before shaking her head and giving a deep breath.

"I don't know how the gods managed to beat it and not be corrupted by that terrible energy... But something like that, having such a huge amount of eldritch energy to be focused in one point... It can never happen again..." Faye said, with a dark tone and an incredibly serious stare. The moment Faye looked deep within Madeleine's eyes as she said that, Madeleine could clearly feel the fear deep within then as she mentioned those words.

Madeleine might have noticed that Faye didn't really mention the creature, but instead talked about the strange energy it emanated and how she refused to call it 'magic'. It was almost as if deep within Faye's unconscious, she knew something, something she had experienced back when the Shattering happened. Something that might have been too traumatic for her and instead, was locked by her own mind, forced to forget in order to preserve her own sanity...

It did take Faye a few minutes in silence before she turned her attention towards Madeleine once again, but once she did, it was almost as if all the tension, the fear in her eyes as she spoke about the Shattering, it was almost as all that had completely disappeared from Faye's mind.

"Thank you for your help, Madeleine. I'm feeling much better now." she said with a smile, giving her a hug.

"I should really thank Morgana too. Well... That and return her hat to her. I'm afraid it doesnt fit my style that well." Faye said with a giggle as she got up.
