Slick's moment of joy from striking his target clean was snatched away by the arrival of the ugliest meanest lookin' sonuvabitch he'd ever seen in his whole entire life! A winged barb-tailed beast with a face of a man. For the first time in a long time, fear took hold of dear ol' Slick's heart.

“Uhhhh….” He wasn't sure if he should respond to the thing or not. One thing for certain, this thing could see them. He could see them plainly as all hell too by the body language and such! He was slowly creeping back step by step with his crossbow in hand as the “Welp…“ While Nuallán was busy speaking to Rosaria, Slick did something he might regret later. The man slung his weapon faster than anyone's ever seen and beat feet in the direction the group came from without a word or warning. Now in a dead sprint, Slick was racing toward the outside of the oasis like he'd win a damned medal… hell, a damned trophy!

It was good knowing ya. Y'all were kinda sour but you weren't all bad. Hope y'all don't take it personal, I just… took advantage.

“Take any and every advantage. Do that and you ain’t ever gonna lose,”

10 a.m.

Pancakes at the park had been a disaster, and despite Lorenzo not having been enthused to go initially, the opportunity for waffles made going worth it. There was also…

Lottie… For the second time and the second day he had caused an embarrassing scene. Even if he didn't believe it was his fault initially, it might have been best to simply leave. Unfortunately, hindsight was the only thing Lorenzo gained from going to the park. No waffles or pancakes had found his stomach, only adding to his spiraling.

And then there was Mayet. The duke hoped the young royal would omit him from her time spent at the park. The shame he felt was heavy enough to keep him absolutely speechless on the short walk back to the estate. He didn't even have the energy to properly greet his recently arrived nephew, only giving the young man a forced smile and nod.

Once they had entered the estate, Delilah had been kind enough to lead them all to the drawing room, but Lorenzo took a much-needed detour toward the kitchen.

“I will join you all in a bit.”
He lied. The man couldn't bear to face them after what he just did to them. Besides, he needed to eat something and perhaps take a much-needed dose of his comfort medicine. In the kitchen, his eyes met Chef Gilbert who raised a brow at his sudden entrance wondering what the duke might desire after eating at the park. “Could you fix me something, anything really… And have Nathaniel take it to my room… please.” The way the Duke's gaze slowly dropped away from the direct eye contact he'd been giving Gilbert was all the chef needed to know what kind of mood he was in.

“I won't be long, my lord.” Gilbert gave Lorenzo a nod that allowed the down duke to shuffle out of the kitchen and travel straight into his bedroom.

11 a.m.

Is the desire to change one's self… one's being… a betrayal towards who I am? Raising a sharp jagged blade of doubt… of hate… to slaughter my helpless form… a lamb? Perhaps this, yes… Yes, I'm a traitor to me… yet my sacrifice would bear result. To strength… becoming…. like that of a ram…………..

But have I not tried? Attempted? Failed? Suffered? Oh, that devil made sure of it… Kept me from death to writhe in this pain… this life. Without love or embrace…. a wife…. No no, that wasn't him…. Or was it? He did not feed me the drink or create that strife…. His only crime- his only crime… was preventing me from plunging it into my soul…. the jagged blade of that knife….

Lorenzo lay on his back, body sprawled out on his messy bed. He has pulled and ruffled the sheets in his opioid-induced stupor. His relaxed and smiling expression could be the illustration of true bliss from a dedicated artist. On his nightstand sat an opened dark-tinted bottle with a label containing scrawled writing reading, “The Remedy"

“Yes… this is truly it.”

Each step through the forest became easier for Darius as the group strode across dryer and dryer land. Dante getting his footing back also helped as he was able to run on his own.

“Dante! What did that thing do to you?” He wanted to know as much as he could about the creature he assumed was chasing him, not wanting to fall victim to its mysterious ability. Knowing more might also help the group find a means of combating the creature.

Moving swiftly, the group found the village just as they had left it. They were back at the marked trees. Marble, Darius' trusty mount was already looking their way as it already anticipated someone arriving from the sounds of crackling twigs and shifting leaves.

“What now? We have to warn the village, right?”

A slight look over his shoulder at Kassy was Viktor's way of acknowledging her presence as his company into the sublevel. He refrained from verbally answering her question on what the two should do about the Kobra scientists and instead pulled a throwing knife from his belt and quickly threw it through a table with a collection of laboratory glassware.

The sound of shattering glass caused most of the scurrying scientists to draw their attention toward Viktor who pulled out another throwing knife.

“If you don't leave this lab, the next one is going through one of you.” His flat tone lacked the wittiness of someone who might be bluffing…. Even if he was doing just that.

One of the lab workers looked at how the knife still managed to pierce the metallic outer panel of a piece of equipment. The sight caused many of them to drop whatever they were doing and head toward Viktor and Kassy, not to fight, but to flee from the main level.

“Danger's presence isn't always on the surface.” Viktor walked forward to allow the Kobra scientists to pass without having to get too close to him. He noted that Riley was not amongst them. “You should know that better than anyone.” With his head on a swivel, he continued deeper into the facility.

The echo of a pained groan and banging I'm the distance hastened Viktor's steps until he and Kassy found Ja collapsed in the middle of a room. The groaning continued elsewhere, but the status of his team member had his attention.

How did he get here? Viktor looked around the room as he approached Ja. The subtle but slow breathing caused him to grip the handle of his sword. Viktor was aware Ja was the last person to face off against the woman equipped with tranquilizer darts so he could only hypothesize that he fell victim to her powerful sedative. His thoughts didnt stop there as he found Ja's placement suspicious.

“Another trap is-” A sudden roar from the entryway behind Viktor and Kassy as an even bulkier Riley ducked through it. It was difficult to even recognize him with his eyes bloodshot red, his skin holding a pinkish hue, and his gills slowly releasing foam from them. “...is likely.”

“I'M…HERE! NO ONE CAN HAVE HER… BUT ME! NO ONE!” He cried out with his focus on Viktor who let go of the hilt of his sword, keeping it sheathed.

Doubling up on Riley and sacrificing Ja's well-being would have been optimal… The completion of the mission did not require him to be in good health… He had already failed to prove himself useful to the others…

As long as it ensures the team's well-being and success, it matters.

“Mirage. Secure Metamorph.” Viktor took a deep breath as he prepared. “Riley. Stand down. I will only say it once.” Truth be told, Viktor wasn't entirely sure what Riley was capable of now. The only thing he could count on was the hulking teen's lack of combat experience.

The white-hot flames burning off the staff appeared to lose intensity as their stiff upward flow loosened. As if relaxing, Kaleb's conjured fire calmly danced along his staff while the heat emanating from the young man lessened with each word he listened to. In time he would become less hostile compared to his initial address but Kaleb kept stern eyes on his new company.

The dark elven man expressed the desire to avoid most things concerning the war, to include humans. He included his female companion who was silent at first, as her amber irises continued to study the situation

The light elven man was alarmed, concerned by Kaleb's very presence in Ironhold. He wasn't alone in his feelings as the dwarven guards stared in awe with one of them quietly using a transmission bracelet to report to his superiors while attempting to seek out guidance concerning the round-eared being flexing the element of fire like a muscle. The situation appeared to be under control but the capture and questioning of the peculiar group of four was certainly a possible option on the table

Sivaros

"What is gonna harm you is that big fuck-off army of Dark Elves about to storm this place. So I'm Sivaros, Bladedancer, and these are... Eh, whatever... They're cool. I think? You, mate, I'm gonna need you to cool down a bit, tell me your name, and we'll help you get to Princess Annya and her retinue... Wherever the hell that is. That clear?"

“Annya…” He uttered with wide eyes as his prior objective seemed to slap him square in the face. The dark elven man spoke up again as Sivaros had simply enlisted his help without his say. He both expressed his desire to leave Ironhold and the looming threat outside of its walls. He then addressed his silent female companion who expressed her dissatisfaction in "quelling her vengeful spirit" while sheathing her blades. She had also spoken the dark elven man's name. Tanithil.. His mind captured yet another strange name into his memory bank.

She next attempted to ease Kaleb's conjured flames but she spoke differently than Tanithil. She seemed more open to going out of her way to assist him. Almost as if she was offering a gesture made in good faith… or perhaps it was made for good leverage… Whichever it was, he was somewhat aligned with her thinking, even the mention of not being able to easily convince him. Her next words to Sivaros invoked his own.

Kaleb took a deliberate breath and with it extinguished the flames on his staff while he switched to wielding it in his right hand. He had waited long enough to speak, especially with what he needed to say.

“Sivaros. Bladedancer? That's a title or rank in the Sun Elf Kingdom military? And you're in the know of Annya's mission…” Kaleb paused as his eyes briefly looked between Tanithil and the woman. “The name's Kaleb. I ran into dark elves at North Pass where Annya is. They attacked me…” His eyes averted from them as his brow began to furrow. “But I was teleported here.” He pointed up at the city with a simple head tilt. “Anyway, you need to contact her or someone in the Kingdom! She needs to know North Pass isn't safe.” Kaleb had left out details to accommodate a short explanation to Sivaros. He just hoped he had avoided having to make a mad dash for the Ironhold throne with the information.

“And you two…” His gaze found them again with a tad harsher tone. “You want to leave and go where exactly? And don't just say 'away from here,' we need a plan… and the reason why we're leaving one of the most annoyingly fortified strongholds in Avalia.” He wasn't quite sold on the idea of leaving Ironhold to find safety elsewhere. Looming threat or not, Kaleb was not of the mind of constantly running from the threat. He may have calmed down some but in his chest, a beating vengeful heart remained.

The slight resistance Viktor felt against the hanging sniper's stomach caused him to feel a tinge of regret. He should have punched harder! The amount of strength held back might have been adequate for a common person, but this foe seemed to be enhanced just from the way her abdomen tightened against his strike. Viktor's attack that was intended to both disarm and incapacitate was now limited to accomplishing only one. The sniper would either have to drop her weapon or remain entangled with him.

Her choice of the former caused Viktor to drop from the walkway with the rifle in hand, landing crouched as the rest of the team entered. When orders were barked from up above by the sniper, Viktor stood to a fighter's stance while rearranging his grip on the rifle. There was a brief feeling of discomfort in holding the weapon, but muscle memory and nostalgia pushed that to the wayside. The visor of his helmet allowed him to view the weapon clearly in the darkness. Its appearance and weight made Viktor aware of the type of rifle in his hands.

Taking time to consider whether or not he should use it was not afforded to him as the several large figures and Kobra agents moved in on the team. He was fixated on-

Did I hear say Riley?

The thought distracted him from an agent attacking from his blindspot but Metamorph was swift in covering him. Metamorph's recommendation was answered with a silent nod before aiming the rifle at the hulking teenager rushing over toward him. He fired, a dart releasing from it's barrel and into Riley's chest. However, it didn't slow him down. Viktor effortlessly side-stepped him but refrained from firing a second shot. He wasn't sure what was in the darts but he assumed a single shot wouldn't be lethal. One might later ask how he figured this, and he might explain… Or perhaps he wouldn't…

Regardless, with the threat of ballistic gunfire, Viktor needed to use the weapon he now held against those that wished to harm his team. All he needed was a quick diversion that would allow him to shoot freely at as many people as possible.

So instead of firing again he kept his distance from Riley who had been tasked with recovering the rifle from him. It was the perfect time to give the order to establish lighting again but Mirage ignited her staff with a bright hot flame he briefly shielded his sight from.

Perfect

The brightness was enough to make Riley and anyone else wearing night vision goggles recoil, but he also stumbled weakly as if dazed. Tranquilizer then. Viktor hadn't even let the thought settle before firing the rifle at other targets within the large space, prioritizing gunmen instead of the roided teenagers. Thanks to their various sparring matches Viktor had faith the team was better equipped to handle the physically enhanced than gunfire.

Click

The metallic sound indicated an empty magazine. Fortunately, his intended target was quickly grabbed and thrown by Cybergirl into a shelf. Viktor instinctively nodded at what perceived to be LMAO tho case of good timing by the team.

He quickly threw the spent rifle down to the floor and squared up with the swaying Riley who was seeing double, a product of both the sudden flash from Mirage and the tranquilizer. If it weren't for his boosted physical prowess, he would have been slumped on the floor a few seconds after taking the dart to the chest. In Riley's head he needed to get the rifle by any means necessary, but in his current state, he wouldn't stand much of a chance. He needed more strength. Enough to beat Viktor. Enough to put himself over the other enhanced guys. Enough to impress her. Gritting his teeth, Riley's gills flared open.

Viktor was ready to take him down but did not predict Riley suddenly retreating away and making a break for it out of the room

What's he? Viktor started after him.

“Team, I'm pursuing one of the large ones. Mirage, on me! Everyone else, continue taking out the others.” Viktor had to leave his personal feelings regarding Kassy aside. He considered taking Zatara but he didn't know what he'd find while going deeper into the facility. Viktor needed Mirage's versatility. She was a strong physical fighter with power over the elements, an obvious choice. However, there was a regretful feeling in the pit of his stomach.

“I. AM NOT. DANGEROUS!”

The brief reminder of the pain he felt when she mentally attacked him caused him to stop in his tracks. His breathing became heavy as he felt the cold sweat beneath his suit.

“Stop.” He uttered before mentally shaking the in mentally induced paralysis away. Not here. Not now.

Continuing on, Viktor cautiously followed Riley's trail leading down a stairwell leading to a sublevel. It was here he noted additional lab equipment, opened holding cells, operating tables, and chemical vats. Oh and the additional Kobra agents, mostly in lab equipment attempting to pack everything up. Riley was nowhere in sight.

Unlike the agents above, these dozen or so Kobra agents lacked weapons. It appeared their primary purpose was operating lab and tearing it down if they were ever compromised.

“Dark elf! How have your kind not blotted out this SUN?! It only strengthens your foes and dulls your power!” The extended time under the sun and in the desert heat was obviously getting to the demon. His acclimation to the passing of time in Avalia hadn't helped either. Each day Vrexen's nemesis rose with its near-inescapable vibrant brilliance, and each day Vrexen had no means to stop it from torturing his very being. He might have quit in stride if the opportunity of introducing humans to his manner of violence wasn't on the table.

“After I peel the flesh from the bones of these humans, I will make it my mission to undo that which plagues us, Myra! Our mother will not enter this realm with such a blight! I will bring absolute darkness to this world if that is what it takes!" Vrexen preached, which surprisingly enough helped to push him to keep going. With a dark and violent future in mind, Vrexen could be motivated to travel the ends of Avalia.

However, to the detriment of his company, Vrexen could barely keep his mind from slipping into madness… The need for violence would arrive far too early.

“I don’t know if I like this.” Astra said as she looked down at the outfit she was wearing at the Odds and Ends stall. “Too shiny and gold for someone of my complexion…” Astra looked down at her body. How the warm colors held firmly to her stone gray skin, brought an ugly grimace to her face. “But it does what you say it does, correct?” Her eyes peered up at the faun store owner with a stern glare.

“Yes, of course. It fits all! It fits anyone. Any occasion, too… with some added protection of course. Just cross the greaves with some intention and… magic.” The stall owner nodded as he looked down at the 500 amas resting on his counter. He didn’t think he had to explain much to sell these but Astra kept up a front of skepticism. The type of skepticisim that made a person feel as if they weren’t offering up enough and had to overexplain.

“Hmm…” Astra seemed to muse just before she crossed her wrists out in front of her. With a quick flash, Astra’s appearance changed, not unlike what a disguise ring was capable of.

“Oh my! Look at you! You’re-”

“A lamplight cunt!” Astra cut the stall owner off, preventing him from absentmindedly insulting her. “Where’s your mirror? I want to see.” Astra demanded. She was quickly provided a mirror so that she could view her new appearance

“A pretty lamplight cunt.” Astra flashed a smile at herself before peering down at a caged Almiraj. “These things are loyal to their masters, yes?” Astra ask as she bent over to meet the horned rodent eye to eye.

“Yes, yes they are. Some might say, more loyal than a mutt!”

“Good. Loyalty to his master will keep him alive.” She poked at the cage, slightly rattling it.

Erik had been just about to order the group to take whatever pictures they wanted to and get back into the jeep but he was getting the feeling he was missing something the others picked up on. Did I miss it? What are they all staring… Oh… OH! Erik hid a short-lived smirk beneath his mask as he noticed the small cave entrance. Renee didn’t mention a cave… then again, she and her people hadn’t come out here since the missing group disappeared.

Erik would have spent more time pondering on what to do next but the others were already looking to him to make a call. To be the one in charge and responsible for those who sought his guidance.

"Kill?" Akaia whispered with that phantasmic style of hers. Erik knew once she was gone, it meant she was like an arrow drawn back again a bowstring.

"Anyway, boss, what's the plan? I'm not any less willing to knock some skulls just 'cause I've got some weird feeling." Vincent added despite his previous statement expressing wariness of the situation before them. If Akaia was that arrow ready to be loosed, Vincent was the loaded gun with the most delicate of hair-triggers and without a safety. You didn’t pick him to come along and not expect to put him to use.

And how might one describe…

"And our opening song goes to-!"

“Juice?” Erik was staring at the guest of their group as he lobbed a decorative baseball into the pit between a few of the Lost within. Erik’s shot open before dashing over to Juice so he could… peer over the edge in anticipation too. “Alright team! Let’s get down there and clear some Lost! BUT WAIT FOR THE-” Erik blurted the last bit out the Sharpie MK III went off blasting off the limbs of three of the Lost below.
