The ceiling was empty, apparently it was a solitary slime. Then again more could be hiding elsewhere in these sewers but that was a thought for another day. The slime, while he wasn't looking, and it somehow lived through a football punt, had lunged and latched onto his leg which got a sigh of annoyance from him. A quick tug pulled that pant leg up and away from its acid contents and it began to digest his leg. Albeit slowly, stomach acid was powerful but it was still slow.

"No one knows where slimes come from but they're essentially monstrous forms of natures clean up crew. They eat everything and are essentially constructs from...somewhere. At least that's what the elders and shamans of my tribe have said. They like the dark." He rumbled before glaring down at the slime. Were the gods playing tricks with their dice?

"Use the ice, it's better than it slowly working through my leg." He stated while folding his arms and lifting his leg, balancing perfectly on the other so Druid Girl wouldn't have to bend down closer to the sewer floor to get to his leg. For someone getting eaten alive, slowly, he was unsurprisingly calm. Although clearly annoyed. They were both asking if he was alright and he just shrugged. "Get a sunburn on your leg and increase the pain slowly but gradually to a more severe burn. It's slower because it has to work on the scales which have no feeling." Big Red commented while waiting.

Kharne could have kept his pace up for another hour or two despite the size and weight of his weapon. Decades of using it, proper technique to not waste energy, and how to breathe properly while striking made the rate at which he tired much slower. Nevermind the fact his top tier lungs processing oxygen for his blood to keep his muscles from cramping was a great boon. But fights were never guaranteed in someones favor, especially when unpredictable things happening.

Like for example a foe turning its back to get away despite a rain of slashes. The troll retreated quickly before charging and tackling the behemoth. The pair rolling, the giant blade being knocked out of hand, before the troll was using its stubbed arm to hold the dragonborn down and laid into the bulky mans face.

Having several hundred pounds of muscle and bone thrown at someone was enough to wind even the most seasoned fighters, so the troll got a few good solid hits into him. Crimson blood was stark against the white reptilian mans hide. Blood was trickling from his nose and from a busted lip before his arms came up and worked on blocking. Trolls were much stronger than they looked so those few punches had actually hurt in comparison to a humans or elves.

Those troll limbs were also long, he couldn't retaliate with his own punches because the damned things face was still out of reach despite a portion of its arm missing. He just might be able to tickle its chin with a fingertip but otherwise all he'd be able to reach is the torso. Negligible damage for something that regenerates.
Name: Drachen Steinboden

Age: 29

Nationality: German

Base of Operations: Earth; Europe

Class: Duelist

Preferred Advanced Class: Knight

Equipment:

  • Main Weapon: Ion Ostryx Battle Axe
  • Secondary Weapon: Ion Throwing Knives
  • Armor: Ostryx Body Armor
  • Gear: Plasmic Grenade

Gene Mods:

  • Adaptive Nerve Firing: Allows a soldier to react faster to attacks. Boosting the soldiers Dodge that makes enemies miss more often.
  • Adaptive Bone Marrow: Allows a soldier to heal faster than normal and grants Drachen an immunity to Chryssalid Poison.

Appearance:
Drachen is a rather large man, standing at six feet four inches with a heavy build. Thick muscles that would look more at home on a Heavy unit than a Duelist. His skin is darkly tanned from being outside so much, and is littered with numerous scars from various wounds over the years. On his back are a set of draconic wing tattoos that look surprisingly real. He's strangely hairless as well despite his ancestry.

Like the rest of him he's completely bald, whether by choice or not is in his file. Thick black eyebrows rest on a rather thick ridge, making him look angry and casting a small shadow over his eyes. Said eyes are a steel gray in color and slightly sunken. Between his eyes and lower down he has a block-ish nose. His lips are average, but hold a slight natural frown that gives his overall look to be angry.

Backstory:
Drachen was born in Germany a year after the war for Earth was over. His name is kind of a give away on that along with some of a remaining accent. His younger years flew by in an unimportant blur until he joined up with the military. Schools didn't cover the Alien Invasion very well, a lot of hush hush details apparently. Here he learned a lot more on what actually happened in the war by checking records available in his off time.

During training he found that he preferred getting up close and personal instead of hiding a mile away to blow somethings head off. His size, endurance, and overall might, tended to win out over technique when it came to hand to hand. A few Veterans of the War that were still active compared him to a Muton. Although biologically his strength didn't compare to their brutish might. After learning hand to hand techniques he was moved on to learn the weaponry of a Duelist. Swords and throwing knives. Unfortunately the swords were simply too light and adding weight would make the weapon awkward and clumsy. So an axe was made with the same technology. Thankfully an axe tended to follow the same attack patterns as a sword minus drawing cuts.

Unfortunately, in his mind anyway, there weren't any Aliens around after all that training. It was basic patrols, hunts that came up empty, and more training. Well he trained on his own, going above and beyond the norm. Between orders he did everything he could to increase his strength, surpass his previous move speeds, and to hone his reflexes despite the Gene Mods active within his body. Hell the Adaptive Bone Marrow let him abuse himself to go even further beyond normal human standards.

Finally it was decades after the War and Humanity decided it was time to go Alien hunting through space. He didn't really understand the tech to traverse space, would they be in cryo like in the movies? Or did the ships just move that fast now that they could just...warp to the planets and go on the offensive? He'd find out soon enough.

Kharne's eyebrow rose up when the troll stepped on the flat of his blade as he was twisting it to bring it back up into the green sapien. That was some serious reflexes, then again if one regenerated you didn't really have to worry about pain too much. Sure it hurt, but if you knew you'd heal you wouldn't react as strongly. Its other leg struck out, kicking the behemoth in the chest which got a grunt out of him, and knocking him back. Strong kick, but it wasn't the first time he received such a blow and it probably wouldn't be his last.

A low prehistoric sounding growl came from the reptilian man before he surged forward in a flurry of blows. His reach was even greater than the trolls thanks to the length of his blade. The cobalt blade sung as it swept through the air and sent troll blood spattering this way and that. It was impossible to block such a weapon without that greatclub off in the distance. A limb trying to shield the body got shredded by the well kept weapon. Every step back from the troll got a sweeping step forward from Kharne.

The blade cut through skin and muscle easily before chipping the bones of whatever limb was used to block. It looked like Kharne was trying to overwhelm the trolls regeneration rate judging by how he was sending that giant curved sword screaming through the air faster and faster. The momentum carrying through into another swing with deft moves of his hands, arms, and torso.
Druid Girl revealed more of her capabilities. Well her future capabilities, she was still to green to do all the things higher tiered druids could do. But she could potentially clear the way if push came to shove. That could be handy if they were tired or wounded heavily. Of course at the nickname for Archer Girl, Druid Girl started to laugh but held it in by covering her mouth.

During their meandering they encountered....nothing! Except normal rats which weren't part of either job. No roach bits, no rat bones, a whole lot of nothing. Which judging by what the guild girl had said was bizarre. Still they walked further west, taking turns when necessary until a sound came to the group. A sloshing and liquid undulating sound. Oh boy the sewers had these huh?

The torch in his hand went down somewhat to reveal the slime approaching them slowly. Neither girl...knew what it was. Really? He could understand Archer Girl and her steppes and plains. But Druid had been an adventurer and even been down here! "You two don't know what a slime is?" He asked before stepping forward. A shift of his balance and one foot shot forward, slamming into the slime and sending sludgy bits flying every which way in front of him.

"Vulnerable to bludgeoning. They're mostly...ambush..." He said before trailing off. Ah fuck. His torch went towards the ceiling to try and light it up. Having lived in a swamp he knew enough about them but never studied them in detail. The ones there had been more green and tended to cling to branches to fall on prey. What large humanoid or animal looked up after all?

The final human of their quintet finally introduced herself. Shae was her name and she kept glancing at Raven. Well the two had to know each other, they fell on top of each other coming out of their portal. But she had a smell of worry for some reason. Eh wasn't his problem to fix currently. Ismael began to ask some questions, one for Raven, the other for Annya and possibly himself. Speaking of Raven her hand went to his, and smiled, before he removed his hand from her shoulder. She'd be fine and she'd learn some interesting things when they got to their destination.

She did explain what a cosplayer was which made him think for a moment. Kind of sounds like a bard or a performer." He commented and then she explained her knowledge of carbuncles. Also that she had no combat experience, which made him think their world is a lot more managed or peaceful than their own. "That can be easily rectified, just pay attention to what Annya teaches." He rumbled out before his ears flicked towards a thudding sound. Big footsteps.

The giant sword wielding behemoth shifted to the front of the group when Annya told him where she wanted him and then told Ismael there were plenty of things that were dangerous and she'd let them know if it was a run or kill deal. As if the world were playing a trick out came a troll from the left, then the rear. Almost a pincer, but almost never counted for anything. The one from the left immediately gunned for the dragonborn and swung its club. To any other species except a dragonborn and maybe an orc, that was more along the lines of a great club.

A shift of his shoulder and the club impacted on his sword that was braced against his shoulder and even his head at an angle, skirting up the angled length of cobalt, and throwing the troll off balance. The giant reptilian took only a fraction of the force of the blow before his sword was moving again. His foot swept forward, putting him closer to the long armed troll, and his blade came down in a vertical slash. The combined force of the blades weight and his own strength cut through the trolls over extended arm and even carved a gash down its torso. It helped he kept his blade very sharp, if a human could use the damned thing they could have shaved with it.

The huge blade stopped before it embedded in the ground and was twisted around to come back up for another slash to cleave the troll from groin to face.

Kharne just shook his head at Annya's words. "I don't believe anyone deserves respect. Common courtesy, yes. But respect has to be earned...my opinion on that subject." He rumbled out. He clearly respected the Princesses because of what they've been doing. Not because they were royalty, if he respected them for their position it would be a hollow respect. Then again this was the opinion of a brusque mercenary who probably ran on might makes right for the most part.

Raven introduced herself, she was quite young. A fraction of Annya's age, and nearly a third of his own. What was a cosplayer? Annya was curious as well, but it seemed Chicago flew over her head. The small young girl had mentioned she lived in an apartment in Chicago, so that was possibly a town in the human world? The princess was asking questions so there was no point repeating them.

Her mumbled words were caught by his ears, which were flared out and swiveled towards her. He could see hints of pain in her eyes, what a lot of people said were a window into the soul. This would be out of character for him, she wasn't his comrade yet, he didn't know her beyond her name and where she lived, but the towering reptilian man laid one of those giant hands on her shoulder and gave a slight squeeze. A comforting gesture from a long time warrior, he wasn't one for hugs.

Annya said the girl wasn't boring simply because she didn't know what it was Raven was talking about. But the pair got onto the subject of the carbuncle which got him to shift away from them a little. He wasn't here to get cozy, he was here to protect. So he reached over his shoulder and unsheathed that giant blade that was often lost between those mammoth wings that rested on his shoulders like a living cape. Their destination was said, they were going to Riverport.

"Would you like me up front or at the back, my Lady?" He questioned while his blade flicked up and rested on his shoulder. It seemed to be a relaxed stance but his footing indicated he could move in almost any direction he chose to counter a surprise attack. Given his ears were moving like small satellite dishes that seemed hard to do.
Big Red glanced back at the guild girl at her comment. "If I went mercenary you'd lose a lot of business. Then your Guild Master would care about anothers words." He replied before vanishing out of the Guild and to the latrines. If he went mercenary he'd bring more of his clansmen out of the marshes and swamps to form a large band. Still he liked his group, a couple of spunky girls who were proficient in their fields.

Although Little Puff...puffing her cheeks out made her seem just a little childish. Still he snagged a torch while putting away his weapons and shield. He wouldn't need those for big rats and bugs. A log would be useful for the bugs, just roll over them and let the weight do the actual work. The group went into the latrine and Big Red pulled the door open with a small flex of his considerable strength. "Breathe through your noses, you'll adapt quicker." He rumbled out as he inhaled. Yup, smelled like a swamp. Maybe a bit more sharp thanks to the urine.

A strike of flint on steel and his torch was lit, which was a few quiet click clacks, giving them a good bubble of visibility. While he had been doing that Druid Girl spoke of her time down here. "How long ago was that venture? They shouldn't populate that quickly." He asked as he pulled out the old map of the sewers. It'd most likely be accurate for the most part, the town wasn't that old and the only inaccuracies should be where rats and such messed things up.

The behemoth took into account what the girls said and requested. Glancing at the map he shrugged and handed it to Druid Girl. "West is fine by me. You read the map since I can hold anything in the front if you even need to put it away. Little Puff can handle the rear. He stated before starting to move. The torch in hand held high to offer more distance to their light. Although whenever they neared a corner he would scrape off the lichen and mold before using the piece of steel in his pouch to make a marker to indicate where they were coming from.
Big Red had his arms lazily folded across his chest while he listened to the Guild Girl. "So that's why you don't typically allow double takes or more. Should I speak to your supervisors about them being on the lower end of intelligence? If I didn't think my group couldn't do it I wouldn't ask for two at the same time. He questioned then continued on before shrugging. If they had to take one at a time then they took one at a time.

Then again you had to take a trophy to prove that you did it, right? They could grab trophies from both as they went along then turn them both in once they got on the surface. For now he wrote his name on the Rat Quest with, he actually didn't know the names of his fellow party members. They'd been surviving on nicknames. So he put Little Puff and Nature's Bounty for their names. A slight smirk curled his lip at Druid Girls temporary name. If she understood the male brain she'd probably hit him.

With the job secured he left the Guild and went to the meeting point to see the two girls chatting. Little Puff's words got him to raise an eyebrow before he laid a hand atop her head lightly. "We'll be fine, just be mindful of your surroundings and don't get bit. Watch the back more than the front, Druid Girl can look between both and help where she thinks it's necessary." He rumbled

His gaze went to the both of the girls. "We got everything that we need?" He questioned before they went to move. The two would need a decent melee weapon and the group needed supplies. He still had his giant knife and copper studded cudgel but he'd more than likely use his hands again.

Kharne blinked once when he was suddenly semi-addressed by one of the humans, Raven was her name since she was introducing herself, and apparently she was very honored to meet one of his kind. A slight tilt of his head before he nodded once. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Miss Raven. I am called Kharne." He rumbled to her while giving what could possibly be a smile. His face wasn't built like a humans, so teeth showing when lips were pulled up came with the territory.

The groups were split up quick enough, Raven and Red and Ismael were with Annya and himself while the other three humans went with Rosaria and her man-servant. Annya explained what his orders were to be, which got him to nod his head. He was to be the humans shield for the most part, and if there was more than the princess could handle was when he was to engage. "Understood my lady." He replied as they set out. Tromping through the extravagant halls until they reached the main doors. When they exited the humans seemed to be in awe, and Raven even said something slightly interesting. He'd talk to her once they were all settled more.

Annya piped up reintroducing herself and introducing him to the rest. She requested they not use her title, but since she was his employer he would at least give her a 'My Lady'. A blink came when she went on to say not to bad mouth him. Why was she seemingly trying to protect his feelings? " My lady they can talk how they wish about me. I'm a mercenary so trying to spare my feelings isn't necessary." He said to the fiery princess. He was supposed to protect them, not her protect him.

"As Annya said, I am Kharne. I'm sixty eight years old and a mercenary." Annya knew this information but the humans didn't. The male started introduce himself too but he stopped after saying a portion of his name. Was he trying to hide something? Kharne wasn't one for sneakiness honestly. But he asked an important question, where were they going? She had mentioned River Port, but that was across the river. Either way his hand went over his shoulder and pulled that gargantuan sword from its strange sheathe to rest on his shoulder. Better to be prepared for trouble than to be caught unawares
