“Oh my - wow. Okay, first of all you’re as beautiful as ever and I promise that! BUT secondly, what happened to you, Lady Zarai?”... “I want to give you a hug, sweetie, but I don’t want to hurt you… Here!... Hand hug!”

“Thank you, Princess; it may have been a bit too many drinks.” Zarai grinned at Princess Sadie, already imagining the aching if she were to be hugged. “A hand hug would be just as well.” She agreed, squeezing back before he excused herself.

Sir Barrios had helped Zarai down onto the pillows without much fuss. It felt like someone was sitting on her chest, crushing her lungs until she couldn't breathe. But the fireworks were worth it. All the colors brightly illuminated the darkening sky, and the smell of gunpowder and smoke sat heavy in the air after.

Lord Roman approached their spot after he had greeted everyone in their group. Zarai offered the man a smile as he took a seat next to them– a little too close for comfort, but she did not let her smile fall.

“I do have to say, you look as stunning as ever, Lady Zarai.”

Is everyone going to lie to my ugly face about how I look today? “You flatter me, Lord Ravenwood. It is good to see you– although he had already seen each other in the morning.” She said and took one of the pillows next to her and hugged it to her chest, fingers playing with the soft frayed ends of it. Zarai didn’t mind small talk, but it was a bit hard to talk when everything hurt.

“Zary, I’m proud of you…. “

At least someone in this world is. Zarai snorted and looked away from Roman, waiting to hear a “but”, or a “however”, or a “yet”.

"You’re doing a good job, I’m glad to see you out here with the rest of us, instead of letting your injuries get the best of you and remaining in bed.”

Zarai shifted in her seat, staring down the hill to a couple in their own blanket.

"I believe that we are all doing a good job, our lives can be stressful and challenging at times. Yet if it wasn’t challenging it wouldn’t change us and we wouldn’t grow."

“Those are wise words, Roman. They mean a lot.” Zarai responded all too quickly, but she offered a small smile in hopes of appeasing the man. “Thank you.” Her thoughts were swimming in circles, stuck in a whirlpool of confusion, suspicion, and doubt. So, a small thank you was all she could really conjure up without racking her brain for something more, something better to say to him.

Was her response adequate? Had she been too curt? Rude? Whatever.

“We should… just enjoy tonight. I heard there were going to be fireworks.” Zarai flashed a toothy grin and looked up at the sky, awaiting the upcoming light show.

And it started shortly after, her eyes lighting up and a smile gracing her lips as the world around them was covered by a blanket of red, blues, and greens.

“I don't want to be a bother.”

Zarai managed to hear over the fireworks, and her attention was brought back to the group around her. She blinked, staring at Violet.

Edin nonchalantly continued to pick at his meal, barely looking up as he responded to Wulfric's first concern. "All businessmen love to advertise. They need to in order to survive... They're not rich like us, Wulfric... I know, sometimes I forget too." He chuckled to himself and shrugged, "As for Lord Smithwood, he's from the Varian Kingdom. Who wouldn't be rude to him? ...Besides, we all know Duchess Smithwood had her husband killed so she could get with a woman. To make matters worse, he hangs around the Vikenas more than anyone sane should." He lifted his gaze and pointed a spoon of mashed potatoes at his heir, "The apple never falls far from the tree, Wulfric." He gave him a smirk, "Trust me."

He then sighed at the last reason. "Your sister's an attractive woman, Wulfric. He gestured toward Anastasia, who had moved over to the gifts and cakes. "Men stare at her all the time."

“Besides, he is entirely unknown. His background, his business…I merely advise for him to be comprehensively screened in the event you are considering hiring him,”

"I always conduct a comprehensive review before hiring anyone." King Edin suddenly rose his voice. his voice laced with frustration. "Obviously tonight is one of many steps. Do you think I would just hire anyone off the street without thoroughly vetting them first? I have been in the game for far longer than you've been alive, Wulfric. I know what I'm doing." His tone was filled with indignation, clearly taking offense at the implication that he had overlooked any potential issues.

Alibeth rolled her eyes out of Edin's view. She pushed herself away from the table, her chair scooting back. Unceremoniously, she rose to her feet. "I'm done eating, so I will be excusing myself. I'm going to arrange for Callum to be found and for someone to check on Auguste." On her way out of the room, she paused and added, "I highly suggest you all wait before you eat that cake."

“Why should he not sit there, uncle? Duke Vikena is the reason why we are gathered here, to enjoy each other’s company and learn from one another– Duke, please take a seat. I beseech you to forget his rude words. The Grand Vizier may have skipped breakfast after all.”

Skipped breakfast?! I lost my breakfast! I lost my waffles! That’s no excuse…

“Leaving so soon? Like a dog running with its tail tucked between its legs? What kind of example is that for Charlotte? You have shown us that not only are you a bumbling fool, but a coward at that. What a pity. Heed my Uncle’s words and give him his chair. He has well earned his spot; meanwhile, you should earn our respect after what you have done. You are also holding up our dinner and we could use a taste of Alidasht after the disaster you have bestowed.”

And still they throw insults at me, the Duke of Veirmont. And that snake… with that bowtie…

"Remember why exactly you are here tonight. Recognize and accept your mistakes and face them with the respect and dignity of a noble of your position. If not for yourself, do it for your daughter. Lady Charlotte does not deserve to be punished for her father's words and actions any further than she already have."

"If you truly want to become the noble and the man you wish to be, the father your daughter deserves then you need to remember one thing... Change does not come without a great deal of effort and persistence."

Respect and dignity? Punished? Persistence? What… What is this tiny girl even rambling about?!

“...I can think of no better seat at any table for a father than beside his child.”

Absolutely not! The head is the best seat, and I sat here first as the guest of honor

“I… I am proud of my stepfather, and I do not want nor require anyone's pity,”

“And I do not wish to see him disrespected.”

Lottie, there’s no need to worry about me… I don’t deserve it but thank you, my beloved daughter.

With everything said, Lorenzo had been prepared to leave. At least that is what he truly wanted. An escape from this hellish den of a dining room. Seated amongst devilish creatures that held their heads up so high their noses could graze the unblemished feet of the gods. It was almost like last night except Lorenzo felt he had better footing this time. He wouldn’t be on the floor crying and begging for forgiveness. Amongst devils, he had others on his side, and that was what steeled him for once in so long. Had it been years since Lorenzo didn’t have the entire room pointing at him with enmity in their hearts? Even so, the duke would not let himself be belittled here. To win this night, Lorenzo had to use the small advantage he had now.

Unfortunately, Lorenzo was too daft to recognize any of this…

All the man knew was that he was in a difficult predicament. Emina had taught him that sometimes it was best to leave replies in the mind, which is the smartest thing he did at this moment. Coincidentally, he was not the only one in the altercation that remained silent. All eyes were on the head of the table and Hafiz who had been quiet all this time finally spoke.

Hafiz doubled down on how he addressed him and no matter how much he decorated it with fancy explanations, Lorenzo hung on the word. Fool. And the vizier had said it right after Charlotte expressed her desire not to see him disrespected. Lorenzo didn’t know if Hafiz was instigating him to do something that would ruin this evening but the way the vizier stepped forward to blind with his shining headdress made it feel that way. Bringing up the ball again was a low blow that Lorenzo was already getting tired of. It was the entire reason he was here after all. Attending this dinner was his atonement. This was his atonement.

Lorenzo curled his toes in his shoes so he wouldn’t openly display his rising temper.

And then he said it again… With a smirk no less. The glance at Charlotte hadn’t even registered. All he witnessed was a smug Alidasht vizier calling him a fool for the third time tonight. It mattered little that Hafiz let him keep the chair now. That smirk! THAT DAMNED SMIRK! ARE YOU CALBERT IN THE FORM OF AN ALIDASHT?! ARE YOU CALBERT DAMMIT?!

Lorenzo couldn’t help it! He glared at Hafiz with fire in his eyes as if he could will the man into oblivion! And then with a heavy exhale… He relaxed, shifted his posture so he was facing forward, and placed the napkin in front of him on his lap. He took ahold of himself before he sprung off the ledge. Perhaps if it weren’t for the little bit of gin, he may have. Then again, maybe it was the alcohol itself that was making his blood boil in such a situation.

“Thank you, Hafiz. I see now why you are the vizier. And knowing that, I think I know why you wanted this seat so badly.” Lorenzo nodded affirmatively, his expression neutral. “Being second isn’t a bad thing, vizier. It’s almost as good at being first like the Sultan. So I thank you again for allowing me to earn my place here at the head.” Lorenzo gently tapped his palms on the table as his mind began to move on from the situation as it persistently did. “Which reminds me! I actually met a young woman today who was so upset that she was just the runner-up for the hat contest I judged. She was so distraught about it and I couldn’t understand why.” Lorenzo shrugged after sharing the brief story. “I guess people aren’t always quite satisfied if they simply almost succeed. ” Lorenzo gave Hafiz a genuine cheeky smile.

Attire: Formal attire.
Interaction(s): Everyone currently present at the Dinner.
Mention(s):

Auguste had known the Alidasht were more forward with their words. Be it through the innuendos or flirtation that the Prince often waved off with a smile or their blunt honesty. Even more were there seemingly strict adherence for tradition. Or... atleast seeming so. He figured there were some ill-will within this dutifulness towards tradition. He acknowledged Munir's presence and simply smiled at him taking his goblet.

The issue with Duke Lorenzo's seating confused Auguste. Within Caesonia the guest of honour tended to be seated on the opposite end of the host, although he did also come to the conclusion that perhaps Alidasht customs were much different from their own. Auguste personally believed that the matter was overblown. The disagreement had generated an atmosphere not do dissimilar to one in the royal court. Auguste expected such within this dinner but it was jarring that it had started over something fatuous. Auguste was familiar paddling such waters, he nonetheless hoped Wulfric was here instead of him. Perhaps it was better he was here instead as Wulfric tended to be... harsher with the Duke.

Auguste stayed silent throughout it all. He maintained his neutral expression, although his smile had dripped away from his lips. While there may have been a conflict with tradition, he thought it was taken a smidge too far when the Alidasht had aired out their personal grievances with Lorenzo. Still, he stayed silent. Auguste nodded at Leo's suggestion, an attempt to diffuse the situation.

Internally, Auguste was proud of Lorenzo standing up for himself. While he may have acted discourteous in their own eyes, there was no excuse to do the same under the guise of tradition. This newfound confidence would serve him well in court... if he sharpened his mind against the more unsavory members of court. The same could be said about Charlotte. Both the Vikena household was always one he had rooted for and often assisted. It was good to see them stand up for themselves.

Auguste exhaled unintentionally at Duke Lorenzo's final words, biting down a smile. Had the Duke always been like this? It was like a different person sat on the same table as him with those biting remarks. Though it was best he doesn't make his underlying comment much too obvious like that, the Prince still found it slightly amusing.

Even though an odd atmosphere nestled uncomfortably in the background, it was good to see that they have moved on from the topic.

“I'm in agreeance, Duke Vikena.” Auguste finally chimed in, his smile had snuck back onto his face. “There have been a-many dueling tournaments I have entered, and many I have placed in second, third, or even lower. Most of time” Auguste paused. “It is more exciting for me if there are mountains left to climb.”

Auguste truly meant no ill-will to his words and simply added his own experiences to Duke's own statement.

The Sultan's attention was drawn away as Munir abruptly barged into the room. He followed Munir's movements with his gaze as he made his way to his seat. Letting out a sigh, the Sultan poured some wine into another goblet and pushed it towards Prince Auguste with an apologetic look. He then turned his attention back to Munir, his tone low and warning, "Your tardiness is unbecoming of you, my son." The Sultan's gaze flickered between Munir and Lady Ariella. "I saw that little move of yours," he added, raising a brow at him. "Keep your hands to yourself." Though he loved his son, he wanted to see him rise to a higher standard - not just in this particular situation, but in all aspects of life, to be completely honest. There was so much more to Munir. Raif had seen intelligence, strength, and love from his precious son all before, but he had lost himself to worldly pleasures over the years. Still, he would not give up on Munir. He would keep trying.

Just as the Sultan was about to shift his focus back to his brother's entrance, he finally caught wind of the Duke, who was now in a state of agitation.

"...Why shouldn't I just leave? Actually… I don't feel very welcomed here. Charlotte."

... I suppose I'll listen to obtain some context.

“There is no need to act in such a way to the Sultan’s guests, especially in front of Prince Auguste and our other guests...Why should he not sit there, uncle? Duke Vikena is the reason why we are gathered here, to enjoy each other’s company and learn from one another– Duke, please take a seat. I beseech you to forget his rude words. The Grand Vizier may have skipped breakfast after all.”

The Sultan's smile widened as he gazed upon his stunning Nahir, his heart swelling with pride at the sight of her. Her knack for diplomacy and talent for words were truly remarkable, and he was delighted by how effortlessly she could sway the opinions of others in their favor. However, he could not help but feel a tinge of worry as he thought of his brother and the grudge he would hold against her for daring to speak out against him. Still, he knew that nothing could keep Nahir from speaking her truth.. Her intelligence and her heart of gold, which shone through in her every action, were a beacon of hope and wisdom to all who knew her. Even if she did not end up as the sultana, the Sultan knew that she would play an integral role in keeping good relations with other kingdoms and advising her siblings with grace and wisdom. As he looked upon her, a surge of affection filled his heart, and he could not help but call her his "amal." For that was what Nahir represented to him - the hope that their kingdom would thrive under the guidance of wise and compassionate leaders like herself.

”Leaving so soon? Like a dog running with its tail tucked between its legs? What kind of example is that for Charlotte? You have shown us that not only are you a bumbling fool, but a coward at that. What a pity. Heed my Uncle’s words and give him his chair. He has well earned his spot; meanwhile, you should earn our respect after what you have done. You are also holding up our dinner and we could use a taste of Alidasht after the disaster you have bestowed.”

Raif couldn't help but feel a tinge of concern regarding Layla's sharp tongue, which could sometimes be as venomous as the snakes she so admired. However, as the eldest, she possessed a cunning nature akin to that of a snake, and this trait would undoubtedly come in handy when navigating the political waters of the court. While it was true that the Grand Vizier deserved to sit in the seat out of respect, Duke Vikena's early departure could potentially cause a much bigger issue and would certainly insult him. Thus, in her own way, Layla had acted wisely in attempting to persuade him to stay. One thing was certain, Layla was strong, just as any eldest child should be. She was also a top contender for the throne, as Raif knew that if anyone could withstand the burden of the crown, it was Layla. Nothing could bring her down, not even the most tumultuous sandstorm, for she remained the epitome of beauty and strength, a true goddess in her own right. She was his "quwa".

"Duke Vikena, you should really be aware of your position and your surroundings. You are not the 'guest' of honor tonight, nor you are the dignified noble you seem to think you are...Nobility is more than just a title, Duke Vikena. Dignity, strength, competence, courage and above everything else, respect. Respect yourself, your ancestors, your lineage and those around you. No matter the situation...Remember why exactly you are here tonight. Recognize and accept your mistakes and face them with the respect and dignity of a noble of your position. If not for yourself, do it for your daughter. Lady Charlotte does not deserve to be punished for her father's words and actions any further than she already have...If you truly want to become the noble and the man you wish to be, the father your daughter deserves then you need to remember one thing... Change does not come without a great deal of effort and persistence."

The Sultan could not help but feel a sense of pride whenever Mayet spoke as well. Her wisdom and compassion far exceeded her young age, and her ability to speak the truth in a way that was both passionate and respectful was truly remarkable. As he listened to her words, he could see the same passion that burned within their late mother. Mayet's tough exterior may have been intimidating to some whenever she spoke, but he knew that beneath it all was a kind heart, one that always sought to uplift and guide those around her. He often found himself smiling at her, unable to contain the joy he felt in his heart whenever she spoke. Her words had a way of making him feel as if his heart might bloom like a flower, and it was why he sometimes called her his little "warada." She'd be an amazing sultana, someone who would rise without making sure those below her rose with her.

“And Duke Vikena, I have been looking forward to sharing a meal with you, may I offer you my seat? Right here in the exquisite company of Prince Auguste, with an unobstructed view of so many radiant smiles and, most importantly, next to Lady Vikena. I can think of no better seat at any table for a father than beside his child.”

"Well said, Lord Smithwood," He commented out loud with appreciation to the red-haired young man. The sultan was not all too certain why he was here, but he was glad he was. Lord Smithwood was clearly an excellent problem solver who took the time to create a compromise that suited both parties. He was peaceful in his approach and respectful of all parties. Raif even extended him a nod of approval. He leaned on the table to further let advise Leo, "You are very intelligent. I am impressed." His gaze flickered to his daughters as if to say. I like this one.

The Sultan took a sip of his wine. This dinner was already so much entertainment and it had only been maybe ten minutes in. His brows lifted as yet another chimed in, and to his pleasure, it was the Duke's daughter, jumping to his defense. She had presented as the trembly little mouse in a room of cats as she had done at the ball initially, but the confidence she obtained the more she spoke was palpable. That's one well-spoken māws. Very eloquent with her words. Smarter than I anticipated.

“Now...Perhaps we can start anew, Grand Vizier. Is there anything you require of Duke Lorenzo at the current moment?”

The Sultan hid behind his goblet to stifle a laugh. Munir and Mayet had most likely heard the sound regardless. His brother finally spoke up.

"My dear Lorenzo, it seems you have misunderstood the situation. I did not insult you; I merely addressed you with respect due to someone who has yet to earn his place at our table. What I said was not meant out of disrespect, but out of the certainty that you are, indeed, a fool. And a foolish man can be a very useful tool in the right hands...As for hospitality, you are correct. We do treat our guests with the utmost respect and care. However, hospitality is a two-way street. You have disrespected our customs and traditions since your arrival at the ball last night. You have insulted our people and our way of life. It is not for you to demand hospitality when you have shown none yourself."

So he did call him a fool and still is. I'll have to speak with him. Though you have some points, Hafiz, this was all inappropriate and unnecessary. Hafiz's voice had grown softer as he spoke. Raif leaned on the table, straining to try to hear his brother, but only was able to catch the tail end as he had spoken to Lady Vikena

"...As for you, my dear, I hope you will not take offense at our little disagreement. You are always welcome amongst our family, and I would be honored to show you the true beauty of our culture...Here, to show I did not mean offense, you keep the chair and I'll go sit over here.“

Very good, Hafiz. Much better.

Lorenzo then proceeded to speak to his brother with some understanding and compassion. The prince even voiced his agreement.

The Sultan's stomach rumbled and he decided that the show was over now. He suddenly loudly clapped and gave everyone a look that expressed his wish to end the quarrel. He rose up to his feet for extra measure and gave a slow glance around the room, making sure to meet everyone's eyes for at least a second. Raif then declared, "...I'm famished. Farim is famished. Let's begin the first course, shall we?"

As the sultan called for food, the air was filled with the aromatic scents of traditional Alidasht cuisine. Servants entered the room carrying an array of colorful dishes. On the plates were perfectly seasoned chicken skewers, grilled to perfection and adorned with expensive spices. Alongside them were bowls of creamy hummus, drizzled with olive oil. The fattoush, a refreshing salad of mixed greens, tomatoes, cucumbers, and herbs, was dressed in a tangy pomegranate vinaigrette. Freshly stuffed vine leaves, filled with a savory mixture of saffron rice, herbs, and spices, were presented on a platter, their aroma enticing the senses. And finally, a basket of warm, fluffy naan bread was placed on the table.

Despite how stubborn both her uncle Hafiz and Lorenzo seemed to be, Mayet was relieved to see that even Leo was trying to defuse that situation without any more issues. If Duke Vikena hadn't taken her previous hint for him to change seats, she hoped Lord Leo's suggestion would make him realize what was going on. Looking to Leo, Mayet gave a discreet nod, thanking him for his assistance.

Regardless of the chaos that was currently going on, Mayet didn't miss Charlotte's displeased stare towards her. Instead of feeling offended by such stare though, Mayet simply let out a sarcastic chuckle. To think she would have the audacity to even look at Mayet with a displeased expression, considering everything her father did to insult them was simply amusing, to say the least. Mayet was well aware that Charlotte had no hand in the foolish behavior her father had, but to not only condone such behavior, but to send such an insolent stare towards Mayet simply because she spoke the truth was outrageous, to say the least.

Still, it seemed Charlotte wasn't satisfied with merely gazing towards Mayet and staying silent and instead, she decided to speak out, directing her stare directly towards Mayet and Layla, going as far as also addressing her uncle. Something which Mayet was almost sure would make him livid.

It was after hearing Charlotte's words that Mayet's expression suddenly changed. For a brief moment, everyone at the table noticed that Mayet was incredibly close from just pouncing at Lorenzo and Charlotte and ripping them to shreds.

"Father... I truly admire your patience and self-control." Mayet said with a deep sigh, after taking a moment to calm down as she looked to the sultan.

"I think you aren't well aware of how serious your father's offense was against us, both on the welcoming ball and now, Lady Charlotte. For you to speak about decorum, civility and respect after everything your father has done towards us is laughable, to say the least. I will warn you and your father one last time..." Mayet said, looking towards Charlotte with cold, threatening eyes.

"Do not try my patience." she said, her voice taking a frightening tone as she looked towards them with a piercing stare.

For a brief moment, Mayet said nothing and instead just kept looking towards Charlotte and Lorenzo, her dangerous stare was as much of a warning as her words or the tone she spoke in.

"Do not take my words as an insult, Charlotte. Take them as a lesson to be learned. If you truly care about your stepfather, then you shouldn't condone his errors and be proud of them. You should help him to grow as a person enough for him to be able to act as a noble of his standing. Enough for him to respect himself and be confident enough to present himself without feeling the necessity to act out just to draw attention." Mayet said with a harsh tone.

"Sometimes, harsh words can teach more and be more helpful for one's growth than kindness and sympathy." Mayet finished.

Surprisingly enough, despite his temper, Hafiz's reaction to Charlotte's words proved to be less... 'disastrous' than she thought it would be, with him calming down instead of lashing out at Lorenzo's audacity. Despite his sharp, venomous words, Mayet couldn't help to agree with him, especially as he mentioned that hospitality was a two-way street. After everything he had done, to demand hospitality and politeness was simply absurd.

While Hafiz had agreed to let Lorenzo keep his chair and sat near Charlotte. With that said, her uncle's predatory smirk didn't go unnoticed by Mayet. She knew exactly what he was doing, but for her, it was still better than having him lash out and potentially ruin the dinner, together with Lorenzo, of course.

Unfortunately, Lorenzo did catch up quite quickly to the game her uncle Hafiz was playing and instead of simply letting Hafiz have his small victories, he replied in a similar manner to her uncle, with a particularly venomous reply, mentioning that he was 'second' to the Sultan... Whether by sheer coincidence or due to Lorenzo using his brain, he ended up going straight for the one thing that was Hafiz' biggest issue... His inferiority complex to his brother.

Before anyone could say anything more though, she heard her father loudly clapping, calling the attention from everyone at the table as a clear sign that he had enough of all that. A moment later, he called the servants to serve the first course. A smart move, hopefully stuffing Lorenzo and Hafiz's mouths with food would prevent them from continuing to trade barbs between themselves.
Truth be told, the scent of the spices, especially the grilled chicken skewers were very helpful to calm down Mayet and improve her mood.

"Thank you, father." Mayet said, thanking the Sultan in a low tone with a discreet smile.

"Now please, let us all sit down and enjoy some traditional Alidasht cuisine. I particularly recommend the grilled chicken skewers. While it might look like a simple dish, the spices really give it an entirely different depth." Mayet said, following the Sultan's cue, asking to cease the conflicts so they could enjoy their dinner.

Wulfric restrained an eyeroll when his father missed the point. “Advertising is all fine and well but he needn’t have asked my brother to help with his work,” he grumbled quietly. But it was with the tone of one who knew this wouldn’t be convincing. In fact, none of the reasons he listed were the main one; namely that he had a ‘bad feeling’ about Ezra. He trusted his own instincts – and Wystan’s – but that was the kind of thing which was far too easily dismissed.

He narrowed his eyes as Edin went on to insult Leo. “He is still a lord and the future duke of Stravinsky,” his voice was clipped as he said this, though he kept his tone polite. How easily the king dismissed a nobleman due to an overblown sense of rivalry with their neighbouring country. And in favour of that baker, no less.

Un-fucking-believable.

Or, it would be, if this weren’t Edin.

“Ezra has no business insulting him,” he stated matter-of-factly. And neither do you. But of course, his father continued listing Leo’s perceived faults.

Wulfric returned his attention to the food in front of him. Yet, a mere moment later, he was drawn to meet his father’s gaze.

"The apple never falls far from the tree, Wulfric…Trust me," the old man smirked.

To hell with that.

It had felt like a taunt, but there was no way Edin had the self-awareness prerequisite to turn that phrase on him with malicious intent.

The prince kept his expression neutral, unchanging. He directed a stare on his plate, lowering his lashes before the flare of indignation, offense, hatred could be seen in his eyes. With careful body language alone, he made a show of contrite acceptance.

Still, annoyance crossed his expression at the remark about his sister. “Men stare at her all the time,” he said, as if that was any excuse whatsoever.

Then maybe their eyes should rot off.

Aggressively, Wulfric stabbed a cherry tomato with his fork. The delicate skin broke apart, and the tines sunk into the meat with a soft plop. Once in his mouth, he chewed it till it was mush, then consumed the thing in one go.

With a huff, he expelled all extraneous emotions. Yes, father was upsetting. No, that was nothing new. What point in letting it get under his skin?

When Edin played the age card, he almost sighed. Yes, yes, you are nearly a senior citizen. Congratulations. Too bad old age hasn't granted you the wisdom you claim.

Outwardly, he affected an apologetic demeanour. “As you say, father…I should have known you would never make an oversight. Please forgive my impudence,” he made his tone low and compelling. Still, he knew it’d be better to wait before making serious conversation with Edin regarding the party.

Thus, he excused himself from the table, and approached Anastasia. She’d drawn closer to Ezra’s gifts and cakes. Wulfric laid a gently restraining hand on her shoulder. “Careful until it’s all inspected,” he murmured. He eyed the servants who’d been tasked with ensuring the items were safe to handle.

Sir Alden Drake Plannington

Time: 6pm
Location: Edin’s Castle

After the events with the princes’ courting, King Edin had asked to run some errands. Of course, Alden didn’t do any of that. Instead, he had retired in his studies to review some notes and formulate the events of everything occurring to seek out the best course of action.

On the journal before him, the following had been written:
The kingdom seems to be in distress, as the Alidasht doesn’t seem too fond of the current events that have been unfolding. That idiot Lorenzo is somewhat of a chaotic force in everything. Whether he intends to do his actions or not, he seems to be inciting a war all on his own. It is best to leave him on his own, I would not interfere as his antics seem to fall in line with my own desires. Then inside the own kingdom, things are definitely interesting. My dear Calbert is dealing with his own struggles now, with Violet now in her own state of rest. He will be dying to know what happened exactly, and is desperately looking for answers. He will be easy to influence.

Alden then reflected about the king, before writing once more.

Your majesty is still as dimwitted and unclever as ever, believing that he is a God in some way. His behavior alone will definitely incite some tensions amongst our guests. It's all about leading him in the right direction, and the rest shall unfold upon itself. His sons, on the other hand, will be a bit more difficult to play around. They do not seem too impressed of me, as I had been away for far too long. Perhaps I should play closer attention to them individually, and observe more of their intrusive thoughts. THEY will be necessary for the kingdoms downfall. But it needs to be in a way where they aren’t directly affected. I do have a soft spot for them after all. Them and Anastasia. They unfortunately will have to experience what is to come about, but they do not need to suffer. That will be reserved for “your majesty” solely

Alden sat back and thought about everything in his head. He had been gone for too long, and should have returned hours ago. He had remembered that the Alidasht was having dinner tonight, and he was asked specifically to gather information on them. Perhaps he would drop by now, and just observe before speaking with one of them directly. He quickly looked at the portrait he had of himself in his room, and smiled. It would be impossible and foolish for anyone to stop him now, he just needs a few more pieces in place and watch the picture unfold. He had grabbed his ring off his desk and put it on his finger, as it sparkled mysteriously in the room light before he covered it with his glove. He got up from his desk and couldn’t help but to chuckle.

“Don’t worry Lady Violet, you won’t be lonely for long.”

He locked the door to his studies, and put the key away under his sleeve, and went on his way. He made his way down into the Grand Hall, finding the queen stepping into just as he descended the stairs.

Alibeth paused upon seeing him and began to approach him immediately. “Mr. Plannington… Fine timing for you to appear. I have something to ask of you if you do not mind…”

“Why, of course. How can I be of service to you?”

“I have sent Auguste to the guest house to keep watch while the Alidasht guests dine with Duke Vikena. However, I would appreciate it if someone could check on him and assist him with making sure everything goes accordingly.”

Alden couldn’t help but to smile a bit. Of course the Duke is dining with the Alidasht. They must really love him. And with such coincidence, Auguste is present at the dinner as well. This was a prime opportunity to kill two birds with one stone. “Of course, my lady. I will be on my way, and ensure everything falls smoothly” . But of course, it won’t.

The queen did not give him a smile, but there was a small upturn of the corners of her lips. “Very well. Thank you.” She continued on unceremoniously.

Then Alden walked out the castle, all poised and confident, wearing a grin that promised trouble.

Lord Leo Smithwood

Time: 6 pm
Location: Guest House; Dining Room
Interactions: none

Leo sat back in his chair briefly disappointed that Duke Lorenzo had not just accepted his offer. A couple of people acting as a buffer between The Grand Vizier and the Duke could only be a benefit, but instead, Hafiz graciously let the whole ridiculous chair situation go and ended up sitting between Charlotte and the Duke. Great, now maybe they could all finally eat soon.

"Well said, Lord Smithwood. You are very intelligent. I am impressed."

And just like that, a day that had started out not so great reached a peak that could not be tarnished. Praise, from the Sultan himself, left Leo momentarily dumbstruck as he stared at the red tablecloth for a moment. Mayet too, had seemed to approve of his attempt to aid the whole situation. He hoped this would help make it easier for him and Charlotte to speak with the Shehzadi about last night's party later, a bit of good will certainly couldn’t hurt.

He had smiled at Charlotte after she’d spoken up to defend Lorenzo and mouthed a “well said” her way. The near debacle almost seemed over, until Duke Lorenzo spoke again, now gloating in a thinly veiled manner about how the Grand Vizier was again in second place. Leo knew very little about Hafiz but even he could tell those were dangerous waters. Auguste at least tried to cover the comment up as the Prince told of lessons of good sportsmanship learned in tournaments. The Sultan, truly a wise man, declared it time to eat and hopefully, that would sweep Lorenzo’s comment under the rug.

The food was brought out, the heavenly smell only intensified as everything was set upon the table. He waited patiently until the royals around the table had been served first. He discreetly studied the way the Alidasht guests ate and copied them, not waiting to move too hastily and stumble upon any sort of cultural faux pas. Seeing as how he was here as the guest of a guest, and mostly surrounded by royalty, Leo stayed quiet and simply waited for someone else to lead the conversation. The variety of new foods was more than enough to hold his attention.

"Haha, I'm glad to hear!" Any of John's semblance of formality vanished as soon as the princess just jumped right on him and giving him a big bear hug. "I've been going around town, ya know, looking around. It's...well...been a while. Just catching up on stuff around here."

He wasn't sure if the princess was aware of his Caesonian roots, but it wasn't necessarily secret information. Even otherwise, he's willing to let her in on a bit of the past.

The next few Varian compatriots John gladly gave a bow to as well as offer all coming a glass of water (with a bit of confusion seeing Felix, thinking he had already gone back). Not wine or any fancy drink, quite typical of a doctor's stereotypes. But hey, at least he wasn't offering distilled water, a bland and flat brand with any doctor's approval. John knew of that though, and still sometimes offered that to any visitors around as a joke.

And typical of any doctor, he too was worried upon seeing Zarai's condition. He was briefed recently as he took the position of the head of the Physician Corp, but he wasn't sure how serious until he saw her current state, having to be helped by a helper. But given that they allowed her out to the field, it probably was fine. The resident's blacksmith decided to keep her company now, so John held back from interfering with the two.

"I guess I'll go first then." John eyed those still around the princess lively. "I already said to Your Highness earlier, but yeah I basically just hopped around town, looking for cool stuff, catching up with some old pal." He had no intention of keeping this a secret from others either. "There were some hiccups along the way with patients just soooo happens to be along my path, but hey, good ol' me here can't just outright refuse them, am I right?"

He debated if he should discuss the ruckus at the park this morning or the murder that happened the day before at the library. They were trusted Varian compatriots, so it's not like it's terribly unsafe to share that, but this was also princess Sadie's picnic. Shouldn't ruin the mood with it. "Other than that, yummy pancakes at the park this morning and late night library visit yester-"

Just as that topic was brought up.

He saw Count Fritz, accompanying a hauntingly familiar face. Instinctively, the doctor's eyes twitched and opened wide for just a brief second, right before forcefully readjusted back to his normal friendly face. A trained response, but not one easily recognized.

"Oh no, you're welcomed here, at least on my end." There is active deliberation in his word choices. "Is that alright with you, your Royal Highness?"

But in his head, there was a cacophony of thoughts twirling inside. This has to be a joke. A costume? A look-alike? There's almost zero chance that she would be alive. Almost. He was there when the corpse was discovered. Even if she survived the wounds, there is no way she is back so quickly within a night. That is not medically possible. This lady even looked quite well-cleaned too, in contrast to the bloody mess on the cobblestone. How does that make any sense?

'Calm down.' John thought to himself. The explanation is probably simpler than he feared. But if that scenario turned out true...

"I don't believe we've met." John said to the lady. "May I know your name?"

At the same time, the doctor occasionally looked over to Count Fritz with a friendly smile but a dubious gaze. He had been acting rather strangely this morning.

Violet's red eyes moved over to the speaking man, still unable to look anyone in the eye, Violet appeared to look in his general direction. " How rude of me. My name is Lady V-Violet Damien.." Her words trailed off slightly as if she wasn't even sure that was her name. She offered him a friendly smile but appeared to be visibly forced. "I just arrived home after some traveling and saw the Fireworks. They were so lovely I couldn't pass up the opportunity to enjoy them when I ran into my new friend here." She still had yet to know the man's name, and no one had actually called him by his name. "May I ask your name Sir?"

Lyra, in the aftermath of her deliberate loss against a Shehzadi, strolled the city of Sorian in quiet contemplation. The city had become quiet beautiful in its age. There was something noble about a place with history as long-standing as the kingdom of Caesonia. Kingdoms rose and fell like the tides of an ocean, and we’re often brought forth through time at the behest of a history marked with blood and death. Lyra was a soldier, she knew this much. And yet still, life remained.

On her walk, she found herself in a park. Beautiful green grass and a lovely sky. Her boots and the distant sounds of children running together were the most present sounds. Lyra was at peace in this moment, she felt calm and unbothered. Perhaps she could-

She stopped. Out in the open field, Lyra’s body went stiff as stone. Her breathing halted, and her grip flexes on the hilt of her sword. The air around her darkened suddenly to something wrong. There was something in this park that should not exist. Dread crept up the General’s back, this was not a feeling others could feel, let alone understand. But Lyra knew it well. It was a feeling that she had felt before, and she abhorred it. It made her feel like an animal among predators, among monsters.

Looking around, it was clear nothing immediately alarming was happening. That much was good, but the urge to hurt something was burning in Lyra’s throat by now. She wanted blood. But if things were to be different, she knew she had to be. So, Lyra continued her strides in a straight line, and her eyes scanned every blade of grass, every face, and every motion around her with the scrutiny of a master tactician. Her mind had become an empty vessel, not a stray thought beyond the will to survive and seek out danger. Her senses felt dulled, and Lyra could only imagine what she’d do if she wasn’t aware of that fact in and of itself.

She came to a stop and was jarred out of her mindset when she saw a group off in the distance. Sadie’s face anchored her enough that she could take a breath, after what could’ve been two full minutes. Sadie was having a picnic with a few other people. Some men who seemed to look like her, and older-looking man and… A woman. Just looking at her, something felt wrong. Her skin looked deathly pale, she looked dejected, and her eyes. There was only one person alive who had eyes red as blood. And she didn’t walk with a cane. They were distracted, and Lyra was a considerable distance away, but Lyra’s senses were trained on the woman like a starving animal.

Too many emotions were rendered unfettered.

No.

She resisted the temptation to cleave the woman in half, by turning around and shutting her eyes. She inhaled, and exhaled. Breathe in… Breathe out. Breathe in, and breathe out.

”This will be different,” she told herself.

Lyra steadied herself, and undid the death grip on her hilt. She turned around, and put forth all her will to act as normal as she knew how. And so, she walked over to the picnic, and approached them.

”Sadie! I was wondering where you had wandered off to. The fireworks, oh- You had to see them from here, yes?” She exclaimed, an endearing smile on her face that betrayed a murderous instinct in her heart. She tossed an arm around the princess’ shoulder amicably. ”They we’re almost as radiant as you. Almost… Are these young men your brothers?”

The fireworks preparations had been proceeding smoothly, so she left the men to it. Needn't be an extra body in the way. She worked her way through the town a bit before she steered herself to the park, to observe the bursting starlight. That's how it had been described to her, and it was an exciting description. As she entered the park, the knight easily fell prey to the wonderful smell of funnel cake, and several other foods, before she finally went to find herself a place to lean and eat and watch the fireworks.

It was quite a satisfying show. The bright, colorful lights that filled the air were a beautiful sight. It went especially well with the meal, somehow. Her belly filled and the resulting debris properly disposed of, the knight drew a fife from a holster attached to her scabbard and began to play. The playful, lilting tones of folk music from the countryside would fill the air, between the bangs of the fireworks. It wasn't completely unlike playing over a roaring fire, though there were some rather staunch differences. She could remember the dances and festivals from her youth, especially during the harvest season. This was not unlike that at all. Just… bigger, more grandiose. This music would never fit in the castle proper, but here, it seemed to belong. She rather hoped a bard or two might join her, though. There must be a few wandering about, yes? Maybe they could even get a dance going.

L O C A T I O N : Sadie's Party
I N T E R A C T I O N S : Sir Matthias, Lady Zarai @Rodiak, Lady Violet @Tpartywithzombi
M E N T I O N S : Princess Sadie @Potter

"Sir Mathias, it is good to see you, again," Prince Felix relinquished a sigh of relief that his good confident had arrived. The day had been something or another, and Sir Mathias was just the man he wanted to see. Of course, he would greet the rest of the guests first.

"The pleasure is all my dear sister's," Prince Felix spoke to Lady Zarai. He made a small bow to honor her own and spoke nothing more about her condition. His sister could make do with her own pleasant charms on this one.

The fireworks boomed in the background. They were a spectacular display, and he thought even better of his sister. It was a delightful idea, and it took his mind from whatever was plaguing it -- at least, momentarily.

When Lady Violet arrived, Prince Felix could not help but feel an instant revulsion towards her. However, for the sake of his sister, he made no ill commentary toward the blood-eyed woman. Instead, he merely greeted her in the same manner as he had Lady Zarai. If perhaps Sadie faltered with the Lady, then he would step in to help her.

Fortunately, a dark-haired woman with astute posture threw her arms around his sister. He sized her up quickly and waited for his sister to make her reply for extending his own.

It had been a rather long day of work at the Edwards estate for Drake. His hand had been feeling rather numb from how many papers he had signed and looked over. There were certainly a few intriguing topics, matters coming up with the scandals related to the Guild, social letters asking about certain topics of gossip, and even some hate-mail so lovingly sent to bad mouth some or all of his family. Drake dealt with them accordingly, and shoveled the remaining papers away into a drawer at his desk. The office had become slightly stuffy to him, despite his attempts at lightning incense to perhaps lighten the mood. To hell with this. It is nearly nightfall, and I haven't even seen the natural sky all day. I will finish the rest in the morn.

He planned out his attire and grabbed a nearby butler. "If you could don your finest outdoor clothes and come with me. I have a bit of a task for you. If none of your clothes are worthy of seeing a member of a royal family I will lend you some of mine. I will be at the door if you need me." He spoke to a servant by the name of Sebastian, a young man who nodded wholeheartedly as he went to grab the suit he had been so graciously given and met Drake at the door to the Edwards Estate. The two then grabbed a carriage and took a short drive over to the park, sharing a short chat in the meanwhile.

The cart came to a slow stop outside the entrance to the park, the driver hopped down and opened the door for the two to exit. Drake led Sebastian into the park and gestured towards a slowly growing crowd of folks that he had never seen around before.

"There is an exclusive event going on and I would hate to crash their fun. But I would like to set in motion any plans for the morrow if I may. If you cannot get it to her, then simply bring the letter back to me and I will deliver it to their guest house at another time. No pressure, young man."

Sebastian gave a look of confusion for a moment. "Sire you never gave me a name to deliver it to."

Drake's eyes widened for a moment and he chuckled lightly. "Right right, that would be helpful wouldn't it. That woman over there with the blonde hair, standing by the well dressed medical professional? Her name is Princess Sadie Camilia."

Sebastian looked at the Princess in the distance and back to Drake, then back to the Princess then back to him. "I will try my best sir, but she is a princess after all." Drake would smile and pat the man on the shoulder. "That is all I ask. For now I must go before Father realizes I've shirked my work duties."

Drake turned and began to walk back towards his estate, hoping that the letter would be received well. In any other circumstance he would simply deliver it, but with his father hounding him to finish all his correspondence it began to be harder and harder to find any personal time for himself without facing some kind of disciplinary talk. For now, he would enjoy the sights of the night sky and briskly make his way back to his office.

Meanwhile, Sebastian approached Princess Sadie with relative ease, not finding much stopping him until the wayward guard would eye him up suspiciously. "I just have a letter for her Royal Highness, if I may." He held the letter aloft, making sure they saw the Edwards seal on it. "From House Edwards, it's a....personal matter." The guards looked the young man up and down, seeing no attempt hiding a weapon or otherwise dangerous intent, and motioned towards Sadie.

"Your Grace, you have a visitor. Wants to deliver a letter."

Ríoghnach "Riona"
Time: 6PM
Location: Guest House Dining Room
Interaction(s): Mayet & Nala @13org; Auguste @Inertia; Munir @Infinite Cosmos; Lorenzo @FunnyGuy; Charlotte, Hafiz, & Raif @princess; Layla @Potter; Nahir @Rodiak; Farim@Lava Alckon; Ariella @Tpartywithzombi

Riona blended into the dining room walls, her back straight, her face a mask of practiced neutrality. Beneath the surface, however, her nerves were on edge. Every time Shehzadi Mayet or Prince Auguste directed any amount of attention to her, her heart hammered against her chest like a wild animal trying to escape its cage. When she thought there wouldn’t be more reason to be anxious, Shahzade Munir swaggered into the room. She could have sworn her heart jumped out of her mouth.

Thankfully, Riona’s intuition proved correct; the Shahzade appeared to have forgotten all about the maid after their brief encounter on the dance floor. He breezed past her without a second glance, claiming a seat between the Sultan and the Prince. With a measured exhale, Riona allowed herself a quiet breath of relief.

Maybe, just maybe, she would make it through the evening unscathed. But her hope was short-lived. Duke Lorenzo “stole” Grand Vizier Hafiz’s seat at the head of the table. Riona braced herself for the inevitable trouble that would follow. At the very least, she took solace in the fact that any attempts to shift the blame onto the servants for this debacle would need some impressive mental gymnastics.

Riona watched the Duke and Grand Vizier exchange barbs and jibes at each other across the table with mixed fascination and frustration. Where had this version of the Duke been hiding all along, and what was he doing here bickering with Alidasht royalty instead of confronting the real enemies at his doorstep?

While the other dinner attendees did their best to calm the situation, Riona turned to a nearby servant and whispered a few words. The servant nodded and hurried off to gather the items she requested.

As the first course was being brought in, Riona discreetly slid drinks onto the table, positioning them within easy reach of the attendees’ drinking hands. It went against proper Northern Kingdom dining etiquette, but this wasn’t a Caesonian dinner or a typical Alidasht dinner either. It was why, after serving the Alidasht guests their drinks, she changed plans and provided the Caesonians different refreshments, hoping to ease some of the tension building up.

Lady Ariella’s polite smile was delicate as a lace doily, too thin to hide her discomfort. Riona’s heart went out to the poor woman. She looked like she could use a stiff drink to dull the razor-sharp edge of the awkwardness that permeated the room. Though Riona was no expert in the art of fancy cocktail making, she knew that mixing vodka with vermouth was a solid option. She presented the concoction to Lady Ariella with a reassuring smile before moving on.

She didn’t need to ask what Prince Auguste wanted. She knew his preferences like the back of her hand, having served the Danrose family for years. Riona poured him his usual brand of light wine he drank at least once during dinner. As soon as her fingers released the crystal goblet, the maid retreated with a quick, almost imperceptible bow. She knew better than to linger and risk any unnecessary contact or conversation.

Crimson liquid sloshed in the decanter, allowing the vintage Riona’s father claimed paired perfectly with Alidasht cuisine to breathe before filling Lady Charlotte’s cup. Although it wasn’t her responsibility, Riona didn’t want the Vikenas leaving this dinner with a bad impression of Alidasht, compelled to honor her grandmother’s cherished memory of the land. If Lady Charlotte couldn’t enjoy the company of its people, at least she could leave knowing its food was good.

Riona advanced towards Duke Lorenzo with the decanter. However, as she drew closer, her steps slowed and eventually stilled. She gave the older man a critical appraisal, then retraced her steps to retrieve a jug of water. The sound of water cascading into the cup hid words meant for the Duke’s ears alone, “Is there a reason you cannot be as bold as this with Edin or Calbert, Your Grace?” Setting the glass down, she continued in a hushed tone, “They would not trample over you as much if they knew you could bite,” before blending back into the background.

For the last guest, Riona poured the rest of the water into a bowl. She approached Shehzadi Mayet and dipped her head. With a fluid motion, the maid bent down and placed the bowl beside Nala, who was lying at the Shehzadi’s feet. She wasn’t sure of the tiger’s appetite or preference, but she also offered a piece of meat. Riona felt that the patient companion deserved a reward for putting up with all this human nonsense.

As she rose, Riona mentally patted herself on the back for taking care of all the dinner attendees with quick efficiency.

The Varian?

He had plenty of air to drink around him: he didn’t need her to serve him anything.

Lorenzo kept his mouth shut as the food was being served. Not because he needed to stop talking, but because he was salivating with the anticipation of eating a meal that would make up for such a busy day. He hadn’t eaten breakfast, and lunch had been rushed. The duke was sure Gilbert felt under-used today and would make sure to ask him to prepare something once he returned home. He wouldn’t actually eat it, but he was sure Gilbert would just enjoy knowing his services remained needed and appreciated.

His tummy emanated a low growl, making him want to jump the table at the food but the duke would never do something so foolish.

“What peculiar, yet delicious looking food. Disc-shaped bread, chicken on giant toothpicks, and look at that whipped peanut butter!” Lorenzo was delighted by the sight, especially with the fact that no one had personally plated dishes. Wow, this is how they eat? Sharing a collection of food? Marvelous. Despite their rudeness, it's admirable that they keep with the same eating customs as their peasants. Lorenzo was itching to dig in but a glass of water and whispered words stole away his attention. A dark-haired servant woman with an olive complexion was quietly addressing him as he poured his glass.

“Is there a reason you cannot be as bold as this with Edin or Calbert, Your Grace?”

“They would not trample over you as much if they knew you could bite,”

Lorenzo was taken aback by the servant, his lips parting slightly as he looked up at her. How… How did she know?! How did she know I wanted water?! Lorenzo was a bit spooked but would at least give the psychic an answer to appease her.

“It's my second day in Sorian, dear. And my first courting season without my duchess.” Though he didn't speak as quietly as Riona, his words were vague enough to leave any keen ears guessing the topic of their exchange. The words could escape the servant herself if she didn't give them the appropriate amount of thought. To say it so simply was a bit scary to Lorenzo. It was only his second day in Sorian during a courting season without his late wife. It proved everything was and would not be the same as it was last year. That he was and would not be the same as last year.

Once all of the first course was set, Lorenzo grinned at everyone down the table. He could see everyone was eager to dig in but something had to be said first!

“Ahem! With everyone here and the food ready to be devoured, I think it is a good time as any to say grace over the food served this evening. I am not sure if the Alidasht practice something similar but it is an old Caesonian tradition of giving humble thanks for our meal. I can lead it if you'd like your highness.” Lorenzo gave Sultan Raif the most nod of confidence.

Roman watched the two figures slowly start to approach the group, he didn’t recognize count Fritz immediately as they approached but did make out the man’s form. A small thank you from his left snapped him back to his friend. he could only give Zarai a warm smile in return to her thank you.

a thank you and a smile is all I will ever want from you.” He spoke softly with warmth in his words.

Nodding to the noble knight, his son, and his helper with a smile. “Come now Mathias you talk like that’s a bad thing. Now if we met like this on the field then yes we really shouldn’t be running into each other out there.” Watching Sadie almost throw herself at the small human he brought along with him. The sight was very much adorable. Those moments for him were precious and made him miss home for only but a second.

Sadie’s question and bubbly attitude made him smile even wider with a hardy laugh. “a good gaggle of learners this time, no shinning stars yet but we will find the Dimond in the rough with this batch I’m sure of it. Ill challenge them to see if they can beat even your wonderful craftsmanship at the end of the summer. I’m sure it will catch them off guard especially when you come join us for a lesson.

His smile never faded as he spoke but again his eyes and attention were pulled from them when the one he thought was violet turned out to be violet? But she didn’t look well, bloodshot eyes, a new scar or makeup on her brow that he did not remember being there before. Perhaps a bruise or a mark from a fight, needing a cane? Must have been a struggle. The pair was at the perimeter of the guards at the base of the hill, knowing the count at her arm could get her through he continued to examine them.

He wasn’t too awful familiar with the man but was aware of the Varian nobility that was on the roster for joining them out here this summer. That was after all part of his job. As they approached, Roman stood from his position, he did not conceal the worry on his face. With her red eyes and the mark on her head she must have been assaulted after the party last night. Trying to remember why he didn’t leave the party with her instead of going with the others made his head hurt and he couldn’t help but feel a tinge of guilt pass through him for a moment.

There must be some sort of serial abuser in the city to have two beautiful nobility assaulted in one night, first Zarai and now her. He would have to have his men look into this matter further when he got back to them tonight. Roman remained silent as he looked the duo over, she was definitely distant maybe she was still stuck in survival mode or shock over what happened to her. Why the hell would her father let her out in this condition she should be recovering in bed if her assailant made it so she needed a cane to walk.

John spoke up first and invited violet to join them, the prince looked otherwise neutral to the new guest and some of the others just looked at her with worry? He wasn’t quite sure. The sudden appearance of a red-haired women that immediately threw her arms around the princess made him instinctively grab the hilt of his sword for just a moment. With violet being here his concentration wasn’t on his surroundings.

A few faces from the crowd locked eyes with him for a moment then went back to whatever they were doing. It was true that Roman had guards tasked to him like the others but his guards were always just out of sight or blending in with the rest of the population so it never looked like he had guards with him. They were making sure they didn’t need to come to assist him, he still gave the guards at the bottom of the hill a glare at their failure to at least question who was joining them.

Relaxing and trying to turn his attention back to lady violet, he spoke with a slight smile addressing the count on her arm first, “Thank you Count Fritz for escorting Lady Violet Damien to our simple gathering.” His smile didn’t fade but his guard was still up with regard to the new comer. “Violet” he spoke with the same curious and cautious tone he had when they were talking on the balcony the night before, “Are you alright? I could not find you after our dance last night at the castle.” Maybe it was then that she was attacked, her father sent her off to keep some of her dignity perhaps? What ever happened to her the night before didn’t sit right with him.

Another man approached them and again he turned to glare at the guards, who at this point could only shrug as the messenger delivered his note to the princess. He may not have authority over them but he was still intimidating. To add to that intimidation, although he looked at Violet with a calm but worried gaze, there was the possibility that those who knew him or knew the signs could see a growing rage behind his eyes and subtly in his body language. The crystal hidden under his shirt glowed almost unnoticeably as these emotions began to grow inside of him. He would find who did this to her and he wouldn’t make their demise quick.

Unease blanketed her, wrapping around her entire being as she felt the air grow cold. Her eyes scanned the crowd of people. Her red eyes watched around trying to find something familiar but couldn't. Why couldn't she remember any of the people who appeared to know her? The confusion was starting to give her a headache. Perhaps being alone would be a better evening than one spent in so much confusion.

A few others joined the group, sharing in their enjoyment but Violet just stood there quietly the smile still eerily on her face. Her lips slowly sunk back as her smile faded. A voice that chimed in caught her attention. Her gaze shifted over to a rather large figure, he stood out amongst the crowd. Yet another who knows my name... Her eyes scanned him for a moment and she did feel something. She wasn't sure what exactly it was but a familiarity was present. Ravens...

Violet..

The man said her name so intimately. There was no Lady in front as many of the other times she heard her name it was always after Lady. This man knew her, and she could hear the worry in his tone. She started to regret her decision. "Yes, I am fine thank you for asking... I hope you are well." The response sounded rehearsed in a way, nothing like the women he met the night prior. " Did you need to speak with me? I am so sorry for leaving so abruptly I might have not been feeling well." Violet lied as she offered another smile.

Truthfully she had no idea what happened the night prior. She had some foggy memories of her family, reading books in the library, and her sister...but it was as if she were looking at a storybook of someone else's memories they didn't feel like her own. She couldn't recall anything that happened over the last few nights let alone a dance. Perhaps he may offer some clues as to what happened.

"We could catch up this evening if you wish." She said hoping he would agree. She needed some clarity and her mother was useless in that matter. She was surprised they hadn't yet come looking for her considering how they reacted when she arrived back home.

Sadie kept her gaze on John as he spoke. Her gaze seemed to twinkle like the stars above them with a radiant smile pasted across her face. When he mentioned having “hiccups” her gaze became down casted briefly. ”What kind of hiccups? Is anyone messing with my kingdom?” Her voice was teasing, but there was a ferocity at bay. Nobody messed with her subjects! She pretended to crack her knuckles, which would’ve looked intimidating if it wasn’t her. Her glare contrasted her sweet disposition, which melted away like cookies in milk when she softened.

A familiar voice spoke up, and she turned to find Count Fritz. She nodded in response to his bow and dipped her head respectfully. Behind him, he was accompanied by Lady Violet Damien. A chill ran down her spine, unrelated to the cool night air. Her gaze lingered on Violet and took note of her odd appearance. Red eyes, limp hair, giant scar…. What happened to the poor dear? Contemplating the matter without more information was futile, so she smiled broadly. Sadie pretended not to notice the cane either (what was with that?) and extended her hands to her. The woman spoke, and her voice was void of any emotion or thought. What on earth?

”You will not be a bother. You’re free to join us, Violet.” Sadie glanced towards Count Fritz curiously, then folded her hands. ”Fireworks are a delight, and the more the merrier! We have plenty of food here for you, if you’re interested.” Sadie gestured to her collection and moved over to provide her some space.

Her attention diverted to Roman. As he described the afternoon with the other blacksmiths, she smiled kindly. ”They’ll definitely turn out well with you as their teacher! I will stop by tomorrow. How does that sound? I am working on a new invention I think they would enjoy. I am trying to create a fireproof sword.”

Shrugging it off, she went to return to the others when an arm wrapped around her shoulders. Her heart rate accelerated by the unexpected movement; however, the speaker caused her to relax once she recognized it. ”Yes I wanted to see the fireworks. You are welcome to join us. As for my sibling, Prince Felix-” she broke off and gestured to him with a broad smile, ”-is my brother. The rest are part of my kingdom.” Sadie smiled and bent down to pick up food to eat. ”How nice we can all enjoy the evening together! Make sure to eat and drink, everyone!”

In the background, Sadie noticed an unfamiliar gentleman moving towards her. She turned to catch his eye and smiled pleasantly, despite not knowing him. As he spoke, she listened with a head tilt and her eyebrows rose. The man was delivering her a …letter? For her? Oh my! Sadie’s cheeks rivaled her dress when she picked it up. She quickly unraveled the letter and began to read it. As she read it, she nudged Felix with her foot to join her.
