Current I think watching fight scenes can help in general terms with writing combat, since it can give you an idea of flow and choreography.
At least if you're writing something you know, with knights.
I mean, depends on what you're writing, and the tone and theme of what you're writing. Trained armored knights were legitimately monstrous on the battlefield, so looking up how they fought helps.

As much as there's a lot of reasons twitter sucks, I genuinely don't want to see it die for the sake of all the artists who now rely on it. Hoping the shithead stops trying to directly administrate.

@Nyahahameha: Hey sorry for the delay, I've genuinely just had a hard time settling on how I feel about her ability set.

Since you wouldn't be able to join until after this mission's conclusion you haven't missed anything though, so don't worry on that front!

@Lord Frostecs: Depends on what your concept is, but yes you could probably join.
Dirt Road

The battle wasn't going well for the defenders.

While those who remained were holding their own, it was clear that the initial ambush had claimed the lives of many of the carriage guard. Several men armored in half-plate lay injured or dead on the dirt road or collapsed into the grass.

Of the remaining defenders, however---

The dark-haired, sword-wielding maid drove her blade through the chest of one of the attackers, a spurt of crimson erupting from the wounds of the green-robed man as he collapsed with a gurgle. But the moment she'd stepped back, she was already being set upon by another attacker, putting up a hasty guard as swiftly as she could as the sound of steel meeting steel rang out across the road.

A shorter maid with a more petite build, with contrastingly white hair, wielding a smaller blade soaked with blood already and a shield was sticking closer to the carriage door, panting heavily.

It was clear she'd been injured, a slash through the leather at her waist, and yet she was still standing ready to fight off any attackers.

Out of the defenders, she was the first to notice the others.

"Ah? Sh-Sheila!"

The zweihander-wielding maid forced her assailant back, a swift slash across his front killing the man and giving her a moment to see what the shield-bearing maid was trying to point out.

"What? Who---"

Before she could comment further, she was already under attack once again.

"Reinforcements?!" snarled one of the green-cloaked men, "There wasn't supposed to be anyone else!"

Still, the green-cloaked attackers by far outnumbered both the newcomers and the carriage's defenders, some of their number breaking off in order to try and halt any attempts to provide assistance.

However, even this took pressure of off the carriage's defense.

Forest Shrine

It was perhaps fortunate, at least at first glance, that the medusa, the goblin, and the halfling had awakened in such a peaceful-seeming spot. Sunlight filtered through the ruined, collapsed ceiling and the trees surrounding the long-abandoned site of religious worship, and the ever-present background noise of birdsong continually serenaded their ears.

To put it simply, given the situation they were already experiencing, they could have awakened in a worse spot.

The ruined shrine was overgrown, vines and ivy twisting over the stone, even small shrub and trees finding their way up through gaps in the concrete.

Above them, high atop one of the broken remnants of the roof, a large black bird alighted. It was a raven, no doubt, tilting its head in seeming curiosity for a few moments as it regarded the strange assortment of individuals below. It was an odd group, no doubt, who expected these three to just show up out of no-where?

It'd have to let her know.

Even if they didn't survive.

The raven spread its wings and took flight, cawing once, sharply, as if to try and get their attention.

It was at that moment, perhaps, that it would become clear the birdsong had suddenly ceased.

The forest was dead quiet, in fact. Moments ago it had been flush with life. Even if they hadn't seen any of the animals aside from the raven, there'd clearly been plenty present.

But now all that could be heard was the subtle sound of the wind blowing.

But no.

That wasn't it, was it?

There was something else.

It started faint, but was started to grow in volume.

A scraping sound, as if something was grinding together. Along with it, a rattling sound, and the rustling of foliage.

The thud of footsteps.

Something was getting closer.

On one hand, she'd managed to toss the komainu away from herself to open her path to the main threat.

On the other, it had instead lunged for Agent Zhao immediately after recovering, what damage she had inflicted far too little to successfully cripple it.

Thankfully, the Chinese Agent had managed to redirect one attack into his new attacker, which meant her pathway to the main threat was still open.

Presumably, the most efficient way to destroy every remaining opponent would be to deal with him rather then take them all out individually. Disabling the central spirit was the best option they had.

Why was this spirit using komainu to begin with? If he was a negative presence, how could it even create something in the image of the stone guardians?

It wasn't adding up, especially given the purifying smoke and Agent Zhao's blows hadn't had the expected effects, but there wasn't any time to worry about that now.

If spiritual purification wasn't working, the best possible route was overwhelming him with force.

With most of the enemy dissipated, Arisa could focus, raising Ifrit's enormous blade back over her shoulder and channeling magical energy down her arms, into her fingertips, and up the blade's edge. Flames leaped across the weapon's form, surging across the massive sword and swiftly turning it into a column of fire gripped in both her hands.

Slamming one foot forward, Arisa swung it down, projecting an arc of near-white flame towards the samurai that seared the air as it passed.

Agent Amano's efforts weren't in vain. The naginata was lodged to the floor, and the Agent's first blow struck her in the side. The phantom visibly gritted her teeth, a far more notable response then any prior phantoms had given, before leaping back out of range, hands no longer on her weapon.

As she moved back, she drew its replacement: A rather long-bladed katana gripped in both of her hands, which she immediately swung in a waist-high arc.

Before I could even think about the answers I was being given, the elf(or rather the other elf I guess, given that's what I am now too) kneels down in front of me.

What is he doing? Why is he talking like that?

It's this sort of pleasant, calming voice. I can't deny it's not a little bit relaxing, kind of like listening to some really easygoing narration or something like that, but what's the deal?

Why would he---

Oh.

Oh no.

As he speaks, the realization hits me square in the chest.

He thinks I'm a child.

Seriously?!

Ah, this body... okay, it's not like this body isn't small and cute and petite but I probably haven't even ended up as a child, right?!

The sudden doubt in my heart of that assertion doesn't make the situation feel any better. Neither does the pounding. I'd already seen the shambling figures outside, it doesn't take a genius to figure out what's going on.

I press my hand to my chest. My heart is pounding, I can feel it through my fingertips.

I take a deep breath.

"Firstly---Do I seriously look like a child to you?!"

It comes out angrier then I'd intended, but I guess it's impossible to hold the indignation back.

I can only imagine this feeling is the very same as the elf mage I adored from my favorite light novel when a similar mistake was made about her age.

"Secondly---I was on a plane too. So I wasn't the only one, then."

I let out another sigh, pressing two fingers to the side of my head as I glance towards the window. The move with the mirror was pretty smart, it seemed like the undead out there were drawn to sound. At least he's not completely dense.

"Then this really is an isekai situation," I continue, taking a step forward, "I'm guessing we all experienced that plane crash, even if some of us were lucky enough to sleep through it."

I glance towards the girl with the hammer and the white robes and armor. I guess if you had to die in a plane crash, sleeping through it successfully was the best way to do it.

Hopefully this didn't mean anything about her usual level of attentiveness.

"We've all been reborn as new people in another world," I add, deciding not to elaborate on the details of my personal situation, "And unfortunately it looks like we're surrounded by undead, because it couldn't just be easy."

It looks like some sort of battle took place here. The barricades, the damage to the surrounding buildings, this isn't just an abandoned town.

Did whatever deity that managed this transition have a sick sense of humor, or are we meant to do something here? Or was it left to chance?

Either way, I know we have to move quickly.

"In any case, we'd be idiots not to stick together, and I certainly hope none of you are that stupid," I say, down at myself briefly again. Hearing myself talk in this cute new voice is awkward, and reminding myself of my new outfit and body is even more so. My hands are just so delicate-looking...

I never thought I'd be thankful for a life or death situation, but it's helping keep my mind off my new form a little.

"You said you found that hammer sitting in your room?" I ask, addressing the girl in the armor with the robe, "Everyone should go back and check their rooms one more time if you haven't already, then. There might be some more supplies there."

If she had a weapon, then maybe---

This is a mage's outfit, right? I was freaking out pretty badly when I first woke up, so I hadn't thought to look around that much.

I turn and step back into my room.

Leaning against the wall near the door is a curved black and gold object, one tip decorated with what almost looked like an abstract horse's head, the other simply terminating in a point.

It's not exactly hard to guess that it's a staff.

I might have no idea how to use it, but---

It's better than nothing.

I always liked playing a mage.

Okay.

Calm.

Calm down. Think rationally.

This is a fantasy world, and it's not a dream. That's obvious. That much is perfectly clear.

So, at this point, I have to assume that I've wound up in some kind of isekai situation. I thought that was pure fiction, but apparently not!

At least, I don't have any other explanation for it. I clearly remember my life. I remember the plane crashing. I can picture the faces of people I know.

But undeniably I'm here. Undeniably this is me. Every move I make, this cute elf girl follows. My facial expressions. My hands. Absolutely everything.

Seriously?!

I was isekai'd and I had to end up a girl!? How tall am I?! Why did it have to be the awkward possible outcome!? The mere fact that this girl, at least when it comes to fiction, is exactly the kind of character design I'd like---

There's someone knocking at the door.

I don't have time to collapse in despair. I don't have time to think about anything else. Worrying about my new form has to wait.

Before I step away from the window, I finally take notice of the street below. It's not lively. It's not bustling. I can see shapes shambling, armored figures slowly staggering based ruined fortifications and smashed storefronts.

I can see bones.

...

This place is a ruin. And I'm pretty sure those shambling figures aren't friendly.

Inhaling deeply, I turn away from the window and approach the door, opening it hesitatingly after a few moments.

The person before me is another elf.

Is he someone else in my predicament? Is he native to this place? I have no idea. I don't know how to ask.

I'm pretty sure I heard other voices outside though. Looking past him briefly, I can see a blonde-haired girl in white robes and armor, with a huge hammer. There's also a dragon man of some sort? He's got scales and horns...

This is seriously a fantasy world. I'm seriously a tiny elf girl.

I can't have a breakdown. I can't freak out. I'd just look insane to these people. It's not like they know what's going on, it's not like I can know if they're in the same situation I am.

"I... I-I'm fine," I manage to stammer, averting my eyes. Ugh, I'm totally freaking out. I can't hide it well at all. My hands are shaking. I'm breathing unevenly. My heartbeat is hammering.

I'm trying and failing not to think about every aspect of my new body, every way it's jarringly different from my old self.

I inhale deeply again and try to clear my head.

"How... how did you get here?"

It's a blunt question asked clumsily. But I can't really see any other way to broach the subject.

If they've also been placed in an isekai situation, then at least I'm not alone, though part of me doubts any of them are in my exact situation in other ways.

If they're native, then maybe they can explain to me where this is and what everyone is doing here.

And why we're all in a place like this.

Apprehension was the best way Fanilly could describe the feeling grasping at her heart.

It was little better than the nerves that had plucked been plucked at when she spoke to Prince Erion himself. This was an almost incomprehensible legend, the one responsible for the birth of the modern world after the fall of Talderia.

What was she supposed to say? What was she supposed to do?

The conversation had been a mess, and Fanilly knew it.

But she was Knight-Captain. It was her duty to put the best foot forward.

Just as it was her duty to seize victory in this trial.

Not to defeat Prince Erion's Knights. That wasn't their goal. It was to secure victory by simply getting into striking distance of the legendary hero himself.

It was foolish to ever think that something like this would be easy, no matter how simple it may seem.

Fanilly inhaled deeply.

The plan she'd concocted was flexible. It had to be.

They were outnumbered, which meant they couldn't engage Erion's Knights and keep them away from the throne on a one to one basis.

But what they could do is pull them away as best they could by making feints, by drawing as much attention as they could.

That was their duty. To distract them. To make so many possible attacks on the throne that they could eventually push one through.

A wide-ranging assault from multiple angles that would spread their defenses as thin as possible. This was the attack strategy she discussed with her knights in the leadup to the first trial. It had to be composed so that any one of them could be the one to reach striking distance. Relying on just one person to reach Prince Erion would make it that much easier for them to be bogged down and held back. Any one of them could perform as a distraction, just as any one of them could become the tip of the spear.

A flexible attack with the single purpose of reaching the Prince. The only one she'd been clear about their role to was their new mage. She was undeniably best served to staying further back and using ranged spells in order to disrupt their opponents' formation. On top of that, she could coordinate with her sister(?) to keep on further pressure.

They were up against legends. Fanilly had no idea how well they'd perform.

But they had to try.

The young Knight-Captain's cape fluttered in the wind as she smoothly drew her blade from its sheath.

"Iron Rose Knights, advance! Reach the throne!"
My eyelids are drooping. A plane ride is never the most exciting thing in the world, but it's probably a good idea to get some sleep regardless.

Maybe when I wake up---

Screams. The sound of metal tearing. For anyone on a plane, it's the nightmarish worse-case scenario.

The oxygen mask dangling down in front of my face is little comfort.

When the plane is coming apart in mid-air, what use is it to put one on?

Maybe the sudden change in air pressure made me light-headed. I don't understand why I feel so strangely calm. I should be afraid. I should be crying out like everyone else. I can feel my heart pounding.

I don't want to die, but perhaps some part of me understands there's nothing I can do now as the earth rises to meet us.

Hopefully Takeo-san will finish up that game he's working on. And Chisato-chan is actually getting some pretty promising work as an up-and-coming voice actress, so I bet she'll go far.

There's a lot of things I still want to do, but now---

Ruined Inn

My face feels warm.

... Huh?

I slowly open my eyes, only to be greeted by sunlight through a nearby window.

My thoughts are a jumbled mess, but as they become untangled I recall the crash.

Did I live?

I'd definitely be happy about that. Maybe guilty if other people died, but it's not as if the fact I lived is the reason they didn't make it.

Then again, survivor's guilt probably isn't very rational, is it?

If I lived, this has to be a hospital bed, right? But it doesn't feel like it. Sure, it's not impossible that I somehow made it out without getting too badly injured, but I don't feel any pain at all.

In fact, I feel great. Maybe it was just a bad dream?

But this isn't my room at home. The ceiling alone is enough to tell me that. And it's not the hotel room back in America, either.

Neither of them look this shabby.

The air was pretty stale in here too. Couldn't someone open a window?

I sit up. The light outside is pretty bright, and I briefly shut my eyes to let myself adjust.

The rooftops outside the window don't look anything like they did in America. And they don't look like my hometown back in Japan, either.

I rub my eyes, trying to clear my vision to see if that's the problem, but it's not. There's no doubt.

Those crumbling rooftops look like the kind of architecture I'd expect from a medieval European town. Plenty of games I love have that kind of aesthetic to them, so it's hardly difficult for me to recognize.

Hold on a moment.

Did my hand look different...?

When I look down, I jump out of bed with a gasp of surprise.

I'm wearing a dress?! It's all blue and white and frilly, is there some kind of pervert with a crossdressing fetish around here?!

To begin with, there's no way I'd look good in girls' clothing. Takeo-san could pull it off, but I'm no-where near feminine enough. I'd look ridiculous. Putting that aside, I'm not interested in crossdressing cosplay at all!

...

But that's not all, is it?

I look at my hand again.

This delicate-looking skin.

These slender fingers.

This thin arm.

Is this really my hand? Am I knocked out, dying after the plane crash?

No. I can rule that out pretty quickly. There's no way a dream would feel so tangibly real.

But why are my arms so small?

"What's go-"

My hand flies up to my throat.

My neck is thin and smooth.

That voice. That's not my voice.

That's the kind of voice I'd expect out of some sort of super cute elf mage kind of character. In fact, it's exactly the sort of voice I imagined Sephily from The Elf Mage Doesn't Approve to have.

I can feel a sinking sensation in the pit of my stomach.

These thin arms. This slender neck. And---

I place a hand to my face. Smooth. Slight. Soft cheeks.

The closest thing I have to a mirror is the window, so I can only barely make out my reflection.

But it's enough to prove it to me.

The face looking back at me is a cute, pretty blonde-haired girl's, with long pointed ears.

Ah.

Everything feels too real to be dream, here.

And yet what I'm looking at is completely impossible. There's absolutely no way something like this could happen.

Not in the world I know.

"EEEEEEEEEHHHHHHHHH?!"

I can't contain myself any longer.

@RolePlayerRoxas@Aku the Samurai@SilverPaw@PKMNB0Y
Somehow, it wasn't surprising that Fujiwara had brazenly allowed herself to sustain a gruesome injury. As long as the centipede didn't consume her liver, that wasn't really any reason to be worried.

Even if it did, the Hourai Immortal herself would be fine. The centipede would, however, be immortal.

Not that Youmu doubted her ability to suppress an immortal centipede, however.

She took a deep breath. As grotesque as these creatures were, the sheer size made them far less unpleasant to look at then their offspring. It was strange, but the half-phantom saw no point in questioning what aspect of her psychology made her feel that way.

Youmu had to make sure no-one who was more vulnerable to the centipedes' venom than Fujiwara or the Scarlet Devil was injured.

Drawing Roukanken back, her eyes narrowed, she channeled spiritual energy over the blade and swung it, releasing a flurry of nearly-invisible razor-sharp wind slashes in a barrage down towards the nearest of the enormous arthropods.

But each clashed with the monstrous creature's chitinous exoskeleton without piercing it. Certainly, she could see the lines cut into the shell, but beyond that it hadn't done enough damage to kill or even simply injure it.

Youmu grimaced, but drew Roukanken back all the same. The fact was that she'd have to strike them directly, as unpleasant as it was, in order to cut through the----

Suddenly the enormous centipede was lurching skywards, gnashing moutherparts snapping as it lunged towards her.

But it was fine. Even if that was unexpected, it didn't matter. She'd simply dodge---

A tremor ran through her body as she tried to move.

Damn it, she'd forgotten---!

Her phantom half's loosened connection was like a torn muscle. She'd pushed her body too hard in that instant, for only a second, and nearly tore it further. Youmu couldn't use her full speed. If she'd remembered that, she'd likely have been able to evade the monster.

But stunned her body throbbing, pulsing with even a split second of agony, she couldn't.

The centipede's massive jaws snapped shut and Youmu felt herself hurtling towards the earth beneath it, the sheer weight of the creature over her.

But the half-phantom's instincts hadn't failed her.

Roukanken's unbreakable blade had intercepted the gnashing jaws. Clamped between them, she'd manage to hold it back at the last second despite the pain that had struck her, purely by instinct.

Youmu gritting her teeth. The sudden shock, the sensation of striking the ground reverberated up through her as she landed on her back, another dull burst of pain striking her. But it wasn't the sharp stab of her soul being pulled on.

She could bare with it.

It'd fade swiftly.

More importantly than anything else---

A Konpaku wouldn't falter against a simple beast.

She forced her legs under her and pushed off the ground. The weight of the centipede was incredible, but she was pushing back against it all the same. Her arms burned only for a moment as she pushed again.

Roukanken's blade slipped through those gnashing jaws.

A blade forged by youkai, an unbreakable and perfect artifice that could cut even phantoms.

This centipede never stood a chance---!

It wasn't her full speed. But nevertheless, the moment Roukanken slipped through the centipede's mouthparts, Youmu broke into a sprint.

She could feel its bulk over her as she moved, as her blade sliced through chitin and flesh like a tatami mat.

Blue blood sprayed onto the damp forest floor behind her, as the massive centipede's bisected form fell apart, cut cleanly down the middle.

It wasn't as if she'd never had travelling companions before. But given the fame(or infamy) of her current party, it was hard to deny that Robin was feeling somewhat overwhelmed.

Not in a bad way, though. That was hardly the case.

After all, a famous hero had famous companions, didn't they?

She'd never actually set foot outside of her homeland's borders, either. This was a new experience for her as well. But traveling, helping people fighting wicked and villainous foes no matter where they arose---

That, too, was the journey of a legendary hero, wasn't it?

Robin wouldn't allow any apprehension to stop her. Aside from that, she was far too excited to worry very much. Besides, she had decided to keep accompanying them for the sake of helping others even beyond her homeland. What use would it be if she got anxious now? A hero didn't balk at such things.

So today, when she witnessed the Viera woman so gracefully exit the tree, it was hard to restrain herself from exclaiming how amazing it was right then and there.

But, at least for now, Robin felt it was likely for the best for her to wait for a good moment to introduce herself instead. Indeed, it was once they reached the inn that she finally stepped forward.

"I apologize for my failure to introduce myself earlier," she began, sweeping into a low bow as the sparkling lights returned, glimmering around her, "Robin Fey, at your service. It's a pleasure to meet such a skillful warrior such as yourself!"

With that, she gently reached out to take the Viera's hand, still bowing low, and kissed the back of it.

It wouldn't do to be impolite, after all.

"Ah, but what is your name?" Robin added, straightening, "I suppose I'll understand if it's unwise to introduce yourself given your duties, but it would be nice to be able to put a name to such a striking face."
