Bio

This is my second profile on here, and I have been Play-By-Post RPing for about nine years now. I do my best to see every RP to the end or at least let my character come to his/her own dramatic conclusion when I feel like signing off. Just like novel writing in real life, I tend to find myself on long hiatuses. Since writing is a great way to work out your brain, I try stay engaged as much as possible.

My favorite genres include futuristic worlds, mysteries, and super powers. Any mixture of these three elements will peek my interest.

Alright, taking the plunge here, but how active will this be and how active is this currently? And what people are playing which characters, assuming any have been made?

Well, things are just getting started. I just made this RP the other day and put my first recruitment post out last night. But I expect there to be a good turn out, for sure.

An RP can only be as active as it's moderator(s). I plan on being very active with this one. Online multiple times a day to answer questions and ready to write for at least two hours a night, five nights a week.

What kind of character would you like to make?

Hello everyone!

I am looking to start a new Role-Play with brand new ideas! Please take the time to read this post. This might be a perfect fit for you.

This RP will be an original content only RP set in a modern, Earth-like world, with a twist. I will be devoting a lot of free time (thanks to the coronavirus) to making sure everything goes as planned. And rest assured, there are BIG plans for this RP.

Starting from the top, original content refers to settings, characters, and even artwork. You can, however, use characters that you've already used in other Role-Plays. In fact, this would be a great way to revive an old character, but if you used artwork from someone other than yourself (like something off the internet), then you'll have to remove it. There is good reason for this, but we'll leave that for later.

The setting of this RP is more important than the plot. We start with a world much like Earth. This world exists in a galaxy on the other side of the universe. Within this galaxy, a magical energy flows through space. It grants special powers to the inhabitants, both sentient creatures and creatures alike. Also, technology on this planet is on par with Earth, maybe a little further, given the presence of "magic". What we get is a fantastical world, surrounded by a modern environment. On a side note, I watched the new "Onward" movie from Pixar, and it looked quite similar to what I imagine here. This was already an idea before I saw that movie, so this is just a coincidence. And of course, this would be the more mature, realistic take.

Anyways, as I said, the plot comes second, and so here we are, on a magical planet. Our storyline begins with a familiar scene. It is night time in a large city and the night life is in full swing. There is a high society party in a private mansion. A thief has sneaked into the party and stole from its many wealthy guests. I will be playing the part of the thief and random other NPCs. Role-players that join this RP will play the parts of guests, guards, detectives, wait staff for the party, or any number of other possibilities. Also, characters can be magical or non-magical beings.

There is more to it that, but I'll drop the link to the RP at the bottom of this post.

Moving on, I need to talk about what makes this different from regular role-plays. In this role-play, we will be using other technologies besides this site. We will be using Google Docs to write out our scenes, and we will use Discord to communicate. This works best when multiple people can be online and available at the same time. To accommodate this, I will be online from 11pm to 1am Eastern Time every night besides Monday and Wednesday night. This new schedule is made possible by unemployment benefits, brought to you by the coronavirus.

Finally, let me revisit the "BIG plans" statement I mentioned. So basically, this is the first Role-Play in what will hopefully become an entire "Persistent World" on this site, a world of role-players producing original content. When and if that "Persistent World" becomes popular enough, we can move on to the next phase. This will be a stand alone website. It will start as a free, test site, but eventually, I want it to become a for profit role-play website, where writers and readers can pay to join, and where writers can win cash "rewards" for writing a lot and getting good reviews from other users. This site will be the for-profit, original content only, sister site to this site.

To see more, please visit the Role-Play itself: https://www.roleplayerguild.com/topics/181767-i-f-there-was-magic/ooc

Because this is such a big project, I would like to include everyone I've RPed with in the last year to two years. I hope you all consider joining. It would be great to have you on board!

Angel vs Bonizo

Angela braced herself with much success. Though Bonizo out shined her in speed, she was able to move just enough to block everything Bonizo had to throw at her. At the same time however, she wasn't able to land anything more than one solid blow, just as Bonizo was about to retreat.

Bonizo wiped the sweat from his brow and took a quick second to recover his breath. Then, through deep breathing, he said in his most confident tone yet. "You're good." Then, he dashed forward again!

Angel vs Bonizo

Bonizo saw Angela's attack coming and was able to avoid a direct hit. Still, even what little contact she made was more than enough to throw Bonizo off balance. His counter attack was off, not even getting through the young woman's guard. What followed were a quick number of attacks that all had the same result. By the end of their first exchange, it was plain to see that Angela was a much greater threat than he had first thought.

Trying to mask his pain behind confidence, Bonizo smiled, "Ready to get serious?" he then charged forward, no longer hiding his true speed.

I am now actively looking for roleplayers.
"Millennial Ball"
Opening Scene: "The Heist"

It was a busy night in Astrum.

The music from the entertainment district spilled well beyond its borders, all the way to the docks where large cargo ships were still arriving. It was on one of these cargo ships that the thief came to this city. They hid inside one of the shipping containers, after paying off one of the dock workers at a previous shipyard.

Why would anyone go through all this trouble, one might ask?

Well, this thief was no run of the mill thief. They were wanted in over fifty countries. Their calling was leaving their fingerprints at the scene of their crimes. Not only did they not seem to care about wearing gloves, but they would make it a point to leave one blatant finger print in the most obvious spot possible. It didn't help though. The finger prints didn't match any on file with any law enforcement agency in the world. Their identity was a mystery.

Still, whoever they were, they were only human. On their last heist, they were robbing a museum and they set off an alarm on accident. They only barely escaped capture and were forced to flee the city with their spoils, a small but valuable bag of jewels. Hence the need for an emergency escape plan.

That was all nearly a month ago. Since then, the thief had been slowly pawning off the jewels and living comfortably under the radar here in Astrum. Of course, they hadn't stopped completely. They still lifted purses and wallets. It was just high risk heists that they were taking a break from... a small break at least.

...

It was midnight and the party was going strong. The well dressed brass band was putting their funky twist on some classical pieces, and the dance floor was alive with gold and black dresses and suits. This was the largest, most extravagant party of the century, a new year's party for the ages, The Millennial Ball! Of course, there were other parties, not only in Astrum, but all across the world too. But this was the party to be at for the rich and famous, and everyone knew it. Only the most important people in the world were invited to attend.

The party was at a private mansion, on the outskirts of the city, on top of a large hill that overlooked the peasants below. The grounds were crawling with security. Cameras were on every corner of the property and in almost every room in the mansion.

None of that mattered when the lights went out. The party was in a panic for the three minutes that it took for the backup generator to turn on. When the power came back on, jewelry, wallets, and many other small but valuable items had been stolen. That's when the panic really began to set in.

Investigators showed up less than ten minutes after getting the call. When they did, the first thing they noticed was a slideshow in the foyer. All party long, it had been rotating between pictures of similar parties in the past, professional shots of rich people having fun. Now however, it was stuck on a close up picture of a black finger print against a white background.
Starting Location Intro.
Astrum

There is no city on Pratta more diverse or larger than Astrum. It is commonly known as the business hub for the entire world. At the heart of the city, the buildings are larger and more advanced. Further from the city center, the architecture becomes more classical, in the style of whatever race lives their most.

Like most cities on Pratta, humans make up the majority of Astrum’s population. Despite this, it is still the most diverse city in the world, especially in and around the downtown district. Outside the city’s center, the neighborhoods become more divided into certain races.

Astrum is not only home to the most people in the world, but it also sees the most tourism. Creatures of all kinds come here for the nightlife, the shops, the magical parks, and in general, to see all the diverse cultures.

But as bright as the city shines, where there is light, there are also shadows. A dark underworld exists throughout this city, both figuratively and literally. A heavy police presence exists to keep things under control, but it is a constant struggle.

Still, for better or worse, there is no city more magical or exciting than Astrum in all of Pratta.
Submitting a Character Sheet
Character sheets must be completed using the example below.

Name: Full Name
Nickname: Optional
Age: #
Occupation: Optional

Rank: 1 (Everyone starts at "Rank: 1")
Combat Power: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5
Wisdom: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5
Luck: 5
(Combat Power and Wisdom must add up to 5. Luck starts at 5.)

Skills: (Leave empty to start.)

Inactive Style: (Disappearing, Limited-NPC, or Open-NPC)

Appearance: (Write a one paragraph description. No pictures... yet.)

Personality: (Write a one paragraph description. OPTIONAL)

Biography: (Write a three to five paragraph backstory.)

Most of the info above is self explanatory,
but there are a few things unique to this RP.

  • First: Your character's rank increases as you post to this RP. Posts are built together as a group, outside this site, in Google Docs and then posted as chapters. For every chapter your character participates in, they will gain a rank. Ranks increase your combat power, wisdom, and luck. For every rank increase, you can boost one of your stats by one.
  • Second: Combat power, wisdom, and luck are the three stats in this RP. Combat power is used whenever players want to battle against each other; whoever has the higher combat power will win. Wisdom is used for all other situations. Luck applies as a random boost to both stats. This will be learned as you play, but it is not super important. Story telling is the important thing here.
  • Third: Skills are special abilities that are mostly for show. They are things that your character excels in doing. Sometimes a situation given by a moderator will require a certain skill to complete. You can start with one skill, usually related to your character's occupation. Every time you increase your rank, you can add a skill.
  • Fourth: Your "inactive style" refers to what happens if you don't show up to a Power Hour without writing off your character (permanently or temporarily). You can "write-off" your character by telling what they are up to on their own. Basically, don't leave anyone hanging. Don't leave interactions unfinished. Otherwise, your three options are:

    • Disappearing means your character is magically removed from the role-play so that no-one can interact with them.
    • Limited-NPC means that the moderators can control your character; they may take creative freedoms, but they should keep your character's personality and backstory in mind.
    • Open-NPC means that the moderators AND other role-players in the scene may control your character, again keeping their personality and backstory in mind.
    • You can change your inactive style at any time, after notifying a moderator.

World Introduction
Pratta

In a distant galaxy, on the other side of the universe, Earth's twin planet can be found. Places have different names, and the land isn't shaped exactly the same, but no other planet in the universe comes close. What's more, we find this planet at near the same point in technological history as modern day Earth. Cars, planes, cell phones and the internet, it's all there. The people even look like us. At first glance, one would never know that it is not Earth. But it isn't, and its name is Pratta.

There is one major difference though. In this world, and everywhere else in this galaxy, a special energy floats through the air. It is toxic to life forms from outside the galaxy, but empowering to the people and creatures that live here. There is no better way to describe it than 'pure magic'. It is thanks to this energy that fantastical creatures such as fairies, dragons, and warlocks exist. It is also the most common power source for technology, much more sustainable than the fossil fuels that Earth runs on.

While there are many magical beings, the vast majority of creatures have lost this connection over the years. These non-magical creatures can still breathe the air, but they can’t harness its power beyond that. They must survive though more traditional means, more akin to their Earthly counterparts.

The dominant society on Pratta are the humans, but like life on Earth, not all people are equal. The lower class humans have lost all touch to the magical force; they work in the factories and the service industry. Then there is the middle class, most people here also can’t harness the magical power, but a few can, if only a little. The middle class run the factories and businesses where the lower class work. Then there is the upper class. Nearly everyone in the upper class can use magic to varying degrees. The upper class are the ones that own the factories and businesses and hold high level offices in the government.

Then there are the outliers: lower class citizens born with powers or middle-upper class citizens born with an abundance of power. There have even been legends about extremely powerful humans rising out of the lower class, but these stories are just that... stories; this has never been confirmed.

There are also many more sentient races. Some of these are even more powerful than the humans, but they either choose not to challenge the humans or are too few in number to do so. Some of these races include angels, demons, dragonians, elves, sprites, vampires, werewolves, gnomes, and many more. These “others” tend to live separate from humans or under the radar, even though it is common knowledge that they exist.

There are many conflicts around the world Pratta, but on its surface, this is a planet of peace. There hasn’t been a war in many centuries, and the different races have stopped arguing over territory. But one never knows when things may change...

an Infinity Fiction story

Hello Roleplayers,

Welcome to "I.F. There Was Magic"! This is the first role-play in what will hopefully become an entire persistent universe on this site. All the stories we tell here, the characters, and even the artwork, will be original works. Our stories will only be limited by our imaginations.

Thanks for tuning in!

About Infinity Fiction

Infinity Fiction is an actual legal entity in real life (an LLC to be exact), founded by myself. The dream is that, one day, role-play-writers like ourselves will be able to make a living off doing what we love. I've been a part of the "Role Player Guild" since near the beginning of its inception many years ago, under different usernames, and I feel it's only appropriate to start this venture here, where it all began.
Changes to the Formula

All Infinity Fiction RPs will function a little differently than normal RPs. Many things will stay the same, but a few things will change and be added. First, you will still make your character sheets here in the "Characters" tab, and the OOC section will still be a general board for questions and conversations between current and prospective role-players. But instead of players posting in the IC section directly, only 'moderators' can post there. Otherwise, we will use Google Docs. Finally, we will also be using Discord. Google Docs and Discord will be covered further down.
Storylines, Story Arcs, Scenes

  • An RP within the Infinity Fiction universe is known as a Storyline. It is best to think of this as a show or a series of books. In this case, this first RP "I.F. Magic Were Real" is our first Storyline. If this role-play does earn a spot as a Persistent World in the "Role-Player-Guild" then this roleplay "I.F. Magic Were Real" would become one of many. Story Arcs and scenes make up one story line.
  • Each Story Arc will get its own Google Doc. Here, one Upper Level Moderator will oversee the progression of multiple scenes within their Google Document. The moderator can then choose to personally run each scene or appoint other moderators to help with the scenes. Multiple Story Arcs can be explored at the same time and posted into the main Storyline, one scene at a time. But multiple scenes can't be done at once.
  • Scenes are simply bite sized chunks of a Story Arc. When a scene is completed, an Upper Level Moderator will post that scene into the IC section here.

Power Hours!

The best part about using Google Docs and Discord is that we can have a live experience. But if people are not online at the same time, it doesn't work as well. To fix this, moderators will need to dedicate certain times to being online and available, and these times should be the same every week. This way, everyone knows the best time to be online.

Role-players may still post to an active Google Doc outside of "Power Hours", but if you are not online during a power hour, your character will considered 'inactive' during this time. See more about 'inactive' characters in the Characters tab.

While we're getting started, I will act as the only moderator. I will be online every night from 10pm to midnight (EST) every night besides Friday and Saturday. I'll also be online at other times too, but those are my promised hours.
How to Join

Simply post a character sheet to the characters tab and it will be placed under "Pending Characters". When it is approved, it will be placed under "Approved Characters". Once your character is approved, you will be given the link to the Google Doc, where we will be writing together

Feel free to drop questions into the OOC section below!
I'll answer them whenever I'm online!
