"I suggest we turn left after we cross through this street. The others are going into the opposite direction. We'll cover more ground that way"

The sudden sound of Poppy’s voice caused Erik to quickly whip his head up towards her. It was always a surprise for him whenever the scarlet-haired sidhe approached him. It was usually the other way around and the conversations were often one-sided. Should those factors have deterred him from interacting with her? Yes, but Erik is stubbornly optimistic.

“Pops!” He greeted before his eyes looked back down the path ahead. He almost echoed her suggestion out of habit but remembered where he was. “Great suggestion Pops, but you know I’m not leading the pack. I mean everyone says I am, but I’m not trying to. I just say stuff and people follow and then y’know… It just um… Anyway, I think Akaia will make that left turn. It’s what I’d do too.” He shrugged. “I can’t imagine us splitting too far. We have to be close. I can feel it!” The revenant said as he trailed behind Dallas and Desmond. The former commented on his lost memories, while the latter focused on the potential post-mission storytime.

“Just your family? Hm, you know some people in the commune might say their family is their whole life. But hey, if you’re good, I’m better.” He gave his reliable teammate a single nod. On the topic of family… “And Des you can tell any story you want. The funny ones are the best in my opinion, but sharing a piece of you is always good for the group.” It was Desmond began to mention karaoke that Erik’s focus shifted again.

Akaia vanished from view. He squinted his eyes, but nothing.

“All right boys, let’s move up. We need eyes on Akaia. She might have ducked into a building, I don’t see her ‘sparkles’. Pops, you get up high to get a better look and so you’re prepared to notify the others if we run into anything crazy.” Erik planned to jog forward with Dallas naturally upfront and center. Erik remained several steps behind Dallas’ right shoulder, while Desmond would then fall into place almost parallel on Dallas’ left. Tip of the spear! Erik hadn’t been too worried as the three moved in a wedge formation. Sure, he seemed hasty, but he just wanted to keep everyone in his sight after what happened to Poppy.

Erik let loose a sigh of relief as they came upon the abandoned one-story building, and were just able to watch Akaia enter.

“It was just a turn. Good. Let’s slow it down. We don’t want to give away her position. The girl is stealthy as heck, so I thi-” He witnessed the rapid dance of shadows inside followed by the clanging of Akaia’s staff, a hard thud, and the frightening sound of crumbling infrastructure. Erik’s eyes widened before he darted forth.

A sudden faint familiar vibration that might have caused pause in a seasoned explorer like him meant nothing against the sound of Licorice’s cry. “Dallas, grab Akaia! Desmond, cover us from outside, there’ll be more drawn here!” And he wasn’t wrong as a few thralls and grimes in the area perked up from their mulling around, drawn to the sudden commotion at the abandoned house. There was also something else but Erik was hoping it was just the crumbling building. Even as his instincts screamed at him, his stubbornness screamed back a whole lot louder.

Location: Mission Briefing Room
Interactions: The Team

The days following the Atlantis mission had been… challenging for Viktor. The most challenging time he’s possibly ever had to deal with. Whatever Kassy did to him seemed to have left a mental scar that plagued him with vivid visions of violence directed at him. The worst part of it was his attempt at hiding how bad it truly was from the others. A minor distraction. It will pass.

He kept his distance from many on the team, even more so than usual. His normal spot on the couch remained vacant and the lounge was absent of any bad reality television shows. He spent many of his days outdoors around the mountain or in his room, save for the times in the past few days when one might catch him interacting with Alisa.

Within the briefing room, Viktor maintained his usual pose in the briefing room and appeared stoic as ever amongst the rest of his team. He noted Daphne’s absence but Martian Manhunter, her mentor, starting the briefing without her presence gave him the feeling she had good reason for not being there. What wasn’t usual was the deep breath Viktor took just before Martian Manhunter began to speak. It was almost as if he wasn’t quite ready. The mission… He listened in on the details.

“The goal is to locate the missing teens and discern the extent of Kobra's involvement."

He let the words sink in, but a glance at Alisa kept them from polluting what was truly important. After his talk with her, he practiced meditating using a single mantra. As long as it ensures the team’s wellbeing and success, it matters. He didn’t think there was much more to say, but before he could step off and away, Martian Manhunter delivered news of Daphne’s current condition.

Viktor’s emerald eyes stared almost blankly at the tank before he simply shook his head. He wondered what Dr. Hall might have done for this to happen. There was no mention if it was his study sessions that induced this state but he knew Dr. Hall and Dr. Bingley were cut from the same cloth. Never finding a stopping point and always hyper-focused on the goal regardless of what happened to anyone or anything else. Viktor knew he was cut from that very same cloth but he wouldn’t let that type of thinking rule him. Not as long as he could fight it.

He noted the others’ approach toward Daphne in her glass case. He, however, remained where he stood, as it was briefed she couldn’t be reached. He felt conflicted as all he could remember was their conversation on the submarine.

“...You won't always be so lucky. If you don't make the effort in understanding those powers, they'll be the end of you and then… you won't ever have to worry about having anywhere to go.”

He averted his gaze from her form and quickly decided to place his focus elsewhere. Casper had just spoken up about volunteering as bait for the mission. With a raised eyebrow, he replied.

“Your initiative is commendable, but I think we need more information on Kobra’s targets before dangling out the wrong bait.” Viktor’s attention then shifted towards their mission briefer. “Martian Manhunter, is there any other correspondence between the missing teenagers. Metahuman powers, physique, hair color, hobbies?” Viktor listed hoping there was more to go on.
THREE DAYS AGO

June 20th, 2021 | 3:00a.m. | Happy Harbour, Rhode Island

Viktor had thought leaving the infirmary would make the psychological wound he suffered leave his psyche. That if he reached the comfort of his room, the nightmares might stop. The nightmares that depicted the members of his team attacking him while he helplessly endured. There was no pain, but it was… Viktor would never admit it was scary. Never.

Instead, he woke with beads of sweat, panting in fright in the middle of the night. This would surely pass, right?

Viktor had been cut, stabbed, and beaten in his short life, yet these dreams that plagued him unsettled him to the core. So much so that he kept his distance from the rest of the team. And in the middle of the night when Viktor suffered these nightmares, he’d leave not just his room, but the headquarters by himself in the middle of the night only to return an hour or so later.

Tonight was no exception. Viktor had returned from whatever thing he did after prematurely waking from his slumber. Within the vacant halls of Mount Justice, he kept his footsteps quiet as he could but…

Alisa waited on the couch in full darkness. Her head jerked up at the footsteps, however quiet they were. She had needed to have a talk with Viktor ever since the disaster that had been the Atlantis mission, but he had been avoiding her. Her emotions about him had been complicated lately. He had almost acted like a completely different person on the mission, and now he was acting even stranger. Yet Alisa was nothing if not persistent, and she hated being ignored. So she did what any rational person would do- she had waited in the dark for two hours at 1 AM to wait for him to come back for a strange stroll in the night.

She stood quietly as he walked into the lobby, stepping into a spare bit of light. “Hey. Do you have a second?” Anyone else might have jumped from Alisa’s sudden reveal but Viktor just froze in place while briefly looking like a deer in headlights.

“I…” His desire to avoid her was defeated by that look of persistence in her eyes. “Sure. What is it, Alisa?” He didn’t feel right being in the dark and walked over to approach Alisa in the light.

Alisa turned on the light and sat back down on the sofa. She patted the spot next to her, motioning for Viktor to sit. She wasn’t sure where to start. With everything that had happened recently… her budding friendships with everyone felt fraught, most of all with Viktor and her. How was she supposed to talk to him about all this? She settled on “Where were you?”

“Alisa…” Viktor sighed as he moved to the sofa and plopped down beside her. It was obvious he wasn’t a fan of the question but it was Alisa asking it. If this were anyone else on the team, he might have told them it was none of their business and continued to his room. Viktor didn’t know how to feel about the others right now. The nightmares that plagued him were intense but he knew they were just in his head. The real issue was why they lingered so vividly and for so long after the mission. Perhaps what he saw was warranted based on his actions since joining the team? Did he deserve that pain from everyone? “I just needed to do something. So, I ran the obstacle course. Thrice.” He slightly shrugged.

Upon closer inspection, his eyelids were a bit lower than normal and his palms had faint black marks from handling the giant tires on the course. Despite answering, Viktor found his answer inadequate. He was sure that his closest friend… Was she still? He was sure Alisa would want to know the reason why.
“I’ve been having trouble sleeping. It’ll pass, so no need to worry about me. What about you, Alisa? How are things?” He shifted the conversation to her. Sure, he was taking the attention off of himself but he also wondered how she was doing since they hadn’t spoken since returning from the last mission.

“You should sleep,” Alisa murmured, looking into Viktor’s eyes. He did look tired. She felt bad for keeping him up even later, but she doubted that she’d be able to talk to him at any other time. “I’m… I’m fine. I didn’t- the mission wasn’t as bad for me as everybody else. So.” It was true. Viktor had suffered immeasurable pain, Zach had been shot, Kassy had had her life fall apart, and everybody but her had suffered the effects of haunting illusions. So Alisa, unlike everybody else, had no reason to be upset.

“I am…” she struggled to say the next words, reluctant to engage in confrontation despite having set it up. Viktor didn’t need to be the most empathetic person on the team to realize she was bothered but her next words were unexpected. “I’m mad at you,” she blurted out. “About what happened in Atlantis.”

“You’re mad at me… about what happened in Atlantis?” He repeated, staring at her. “Why?” Viktor almost sounded uncaring but if he truly had been, he wouldn’t have even posed the question. It was just his awful delivery. A flash of Alisa punching him square in the face, caused him to suddenly wince and brace himself by grabbing the top of her thigh. His eyes were wide for a moment before he took a deep breath and pulled his hand back to his lap.

“Um.” Alisa had been about to call Viktor several unsavory names but was thrown off her rhythm. She certainly hadn’t expected him to do… that. A scarlet tinge came to her cheeks as she stared at him in bewilderment. The heat of his sweaty hand practically burned through her pajama pants before he snatched it away. Nope- she wasn’t going to ask. She didn’t want to know. “Okay. Anyways,” she said, “I’m mad at you because you acted like an asshole the entire time. It was like… it was like you were trying to piss everybody off on purpose! First the thing with the squid- I really don’t like being talked down to, by the way, and I was right- and how you spoke to Daphne about her powers, and what happened at the conference… it wasn’t your fault, but you’re not doing favors for yourself with the team. And it’s obvious how much you think you’re fucking team leader or something, but you’re not, and you won’t be if you keep acting like you have a massive stick up your ass.”

There was a slight rise of Viktor's eyebrows as he was beginning to realize he was far from prepared for this, and Alisa wasn't even done yet.

“And your dedication to the “mission”? Total bullshit. Why did you have to tell Kassy you fired that shot when it was Bingley?” Alisa sighed. “I told you you wouldn’t get anywhere with being a dick. You just don’t care about anyone outside of your objective.”

Where there should have been an apologetic reply or a defensive retort, was only silence. Viktor clearly had no idea how to respond to Alisa being so upset with him. He could take people being upset with him but Alisa’s words struck much deeper.

“I…” He failed to reply. “I am…” Again, but this time his eyebrows furrowed in frustration. Shit. Just talk! Viktor shut his eyes and took a deep breath in and a deep breath out, not much different than he had practiced with Kassy on the beach a few weeks back. There was no guarantee what he was doing would work but he almost felt like he was drowning. “You are right.” He finally opened his eyes. “I thought what I was doing was right but… it doesn’t feel like it was, and I hate it.” His right fist balled into a tight fist. “Almost everything I’ve been taught. Every call. Every approach… ‘As long as it ensures the mission’s success,’” Viktor said the last words as if they’d been programmed into him. “Feelings, lives, and allies… friends don’t matter… but you make it…” He sighed as he didn’t understand why this was so difficult. “It must be wrong. I am wrong.”

Alisa hadn’t expected him to… agree. Her indignant face melted. Not into one of pity- she knew he’d hate that- but to one of regret. Maybe she’d been too harsh. Alisa was quiet for a moment, too, furrowing her brows. “I know it’s hard to remember, and harder to change, but you’re not with HIVE anymore. We’re supposed to be a team. We need to be a team to achieve what they need us to. If we keep acting like this, someone’s going to get more hurt than they are now. I’m new to this whole hero thing too, but… to me, it seems like we need to work together. And we can’t work together if one person doesn’t look out for anybody else.” Her tone was much more gentle this time. She reached out to squeeze his hand but he took hers first. He trusted her. At least that’s what he thought he was feeling.

“The team,” he gave a single nod before raising an eyebrow. “How does this sound then? As long as it ensures the team’s success… it matters. Viktor was nodding as if repeating the words over and over in his head.

Alisa smiled. “Much better. But let’s add well-being. As long as it ensures the team’s success and well-being, it matters.”

“Hmm…” He pretended to be considering the addition before barely smirking. “Of course. As long as it ensures the team’s wellbeing and success, it matters. Perfect,” a word he rarely used to describe anything. “Alisa, I uh… I have one more thing.” Viktor let go of her hand and slowly got up from the sofa so he could face her standing up. He almost looked lost with the awkward expression on his face. “I’m… sorry. For making you mad. And for… acting like an asshole… and everything else.” He raised his arms outward as he looked down at Alisa with an uncomfortable expression painted on his face.

“Apology accepted.” Alisa quirked her brows in confusion at what he did next. A laugh twitched on her lips. “What are you doing with your arms there, Viktor?”

“I’m…” There was actually a slight hint of red on his face. He could feel the unfamiliar heat rising in his cheeks. “A hug.” He blurted out in a low voice.

“Oh!” Alisa blushed herself and then laughed. “Okay!” She stood and hugged him back, tight. Weren’t hugs supposed to be tight? “I hope you know this is weird for me too. But it’s nice.”

“Yes!” He said while trying not to sound too uncomfortable. He tried to match her pressure with his own strength. “It’s nice. And also... thank you, Alisa.” He winced a bit, he’d be fine. They both would. It was a moment they’d forever cherish.

Death had taken all who attempted to board The Harem, almost as if signifying Ardyn’s crew were not welcomed in the polyamory. Shots were fired, men were drowned, and all Rellen could do was focus on the fluttering enemy before him. A fairy. A fairy that could use dark magic of all things. He used a similar technique to himself, glazing his blade in darkness.

"Now you're going to say: how can you use dark magic if you are a fairy?"

“Heh… How can you use dark magic if you are a fairy?... Wait what?!” Rellen was taken aback, but he focused on Helio at his front. He managed to deflect the projectile slash attack, sending it out into the ocean with a crash. Helio didn’t appear to be finished with his assault as he charged forward. Rellen felt if he could move toward Helio faster than anticipated, he could catch Helio off guard. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what the fairy wanted. The dark elf nearly tripped as he tried to meet Helio’s attack with a parry. What has my leg?! He glanced at his ankle seeing a branch taking hold of him. With his foot stuck and Helio coming his way, Rellen quickly resorted to his other signature techniques! Suddenly his elbows to his hands and his knees to his feet were covered in a layer of dark magic. There was no time to do anything but block the attack, and that he did in style. Rellen attempted to catch Helio’s attack with his empty hand and counter with a vicious slash across the fae’s body.

Below deck… unseen within a shroud of darkness.

“Kill them? You can’t be serious! I-”

“If you believe these lot are worth more dead than alive now, you’ve learned nothing about our operation. And barely a thing about your own people. Hell, it’s in the name. Dark elves. Kill them, Vellen. Kill. Every. Single. One. Embrace the side of you the rest of Avalia fears. Darkness... It is more than just woven shadow… It’s so much more.”

Lorenzo was taken aback, raising his eyebrows as the count displayed even more generosity toward him. He almost felt he was receiving pity but even so, the gesture was pleasant even if it was not genuine. Count Hendrix’s approach was one Lorenzo rarely experienced but he also noted where this man hailed. Lorenzo often found his experiences with Varian nobles far warmer than that of his own court. He knew King Edin hated him deeply, and Count Calbert only looked down on him with ire. He wasn’t sure if they were friendlier to him because their kingdom was less cutthroat or because his follies made them look better when compared to Caesonia.

When asked if he wanted a drink, Lorenzo hesitated to reply as if wondering if “yes” was even the right answer. He was already on the chopping block for things he had said and was now being careful with his statements. Before he could speak, a man who had been chatting up Charlotte spoke up to address him as well.

First an offered drink… and now food as well? It was as if the world had started rotating in the opposite direction and the sky had swapped places with the ocean! It was slight, but Duke Lorenzo Vikena’s spirits were slightly lifting in the presence of the two gentlemen. So much so that he gave Charlotte a smile and nod of confidence as she departed to mingle and possibly grab something to eat. The latter was something she often said was the main reason she ever wanted to attend these events in the first place. He just hoped she snatched up the good stuff and a few treats Kier would enjoy.

“John Williamson?” Lorenzo could have sworn he heard the name somewhere but he was simply terrible at keeping track of the who’s who of the other Kingdoms. Until today, he didn’t even know what the Alidasht royals looked like. It was only fitting he would be seeing them weekly for dinner for the remainder of this season.

"Dr. John Williamson! From the Varian Royal Institute of Science! Savior of Kolonivka?"

“Oh… Yes!” Lorenzo smiled and nodded knowingly despite not knowing what Count Hendrix was talking about. He decided it would be best to play it off and let Fritz engage the man he seemed quite fond of.

“Count Fritz Hendrix, no need to apologize when you have been so generous. Actually both of you!” He then lowered his voice some. “I really don’t deserve such warmth after… you know.” He frowned, still ashamed of his recent actions. He then opened his mouth as if he didn’t know what to say next. He had made somewhat of an awkward statement in the middle of such pleasantries. “Um… Count Hendrix, you suggested water, and Dr. Williamson, you suggested food. I think the three of us should continue our mingling over yonder.” He pointed over to a food table that did not have many people around it. He briefly glanced at Charlotte whom he spotted with one of the Alidasht Shahzade, more specifically, the one who suggested a lesser punishment to the sultan compared to everyone else who had spoken up. He was worried, but he trusted Charlotte would be fine in the kind man’s company. There was another man, but Lorenzo did not think it was someone of note. Then again, he couldn't be entirely sure.

Before the two brothers could enter the restaurant, a disturbing holographic broadcast played for all in the streets of River Port to watch. The egotistical creature speaking was addressing humans. Addressing them and showing why humans needed to surrender. Darius looked away before the human was torn in fours. He didn't need to watch to predict the conclusion of the broadcast. A sigh left his breath and he was sure the sight was gruesome

“Fuck…” He said under his breath in slight disgust. He knew Dante would have a less subtle reaction to the broadcast, so wasn’t surprised by what his brother had to say. Unfortunately, he didn’t hold the answers to Dante’s concerns. The people that had summoned them to Avalia were dead and the people who murdered them suffered the same fate. The two had been quite lucky since arriving in this strange world but luck only got you so far.

“And it won’t happen to us.” Darius said with confidence Dante hadn’t seen before. The Darius he knew was not completely the same as the one that stood in front of him. Dante’s perceived death jumpstarted Darius' path to maturity. He was no longer the guy sitting on his hands while waiting for life to give him a handout. “Remember what those people said? We can become powerful. We just have to learn to harness whatever gifts we have, and then I guess… I guess we fight back.” Darius said in a low voice before nodding towards the restaurant. Once they entered, they were approached by a frog demi-human who oddly blinked at them. Darius averted his eyes so he wouldn’t make an awkward face. He was apparently the host.

“Table for two?”

“Yeah, two.” He stole a glance at the frogman who nodded.

“Follow me, please.” The frogman grabbed two menus and proceeded to hop as he led the two to a vacant table. Darius smirked at the sight and nudged Dante before. “Here you are. We have the Slime Day special if either of you is interested.” Darius took a seat in the booth while making a face of discomfort. A frog offering a ‘Slime Day’ special?

“I think we’ll pass on any specials today.” He faked a polite smile before looking at Dante sitting across from him. “Right?”

Slick found Sophie’s apology a bit heavy, but he’d take it. Maybe he could use her guilt as a means to call in a favor later. Slick found the vibes to be quite nice, which made Slick a little less bothered about having to take a dip in the pool. However, things never remained pleasant for the outlaw. Caelan started chanting cowboy teasingly, which only caused Slick to raise his eyebrow in confusion. It wasn’t as if the term was an insult. It just wasn’t what he was. He would have just let things be on account of the pair being intoxicated but the rock that pelted him changed things. It was one thing to hit a man who’d shown you nothing but respect, but did he have to soak his hat to add insult to injury.

Drunk or sober, Caelan was going to pay for his actions. Slick snatched his hat floating on the surface of the pool with a scowl. A strong breeze unnaturally whipped from all manner of direction. Slick released Aurora’s hand.

“Miss, I need to deal with a problem. Shouldn’t take long.” He wade through the pool towards Caelan with nothing but bad intentions. Sure, he was drunk, but that was hardly an excuse for his actions.

Before Slick could reach Caelan, however, a cast sphere broadcasted the gruesome execution of a human by the demon, Pride. As mad as Slick was, he couldn’t ignore the violence shown before his eyes. It only made the situation seem that more frightening. He knew what it meant to have a bounty on one’s head, but to be killed in such a way never crossed his mind. The winds died down, and as the broadcast ended Slick sighed.

“Well, shit. If that’s how they get down here, I think we need to skip on the fun ‘n’ games.” Slick’s tone was the most serious it had ever been. The man was indeed shaken up by what he just witnessed. “But first...” He suddenly used his free hand to push Caelan so he’d fall into the pool. “Now, considering we can’t leave without Miss Rose, we oughta get to trainin’.” He waded back to Aurora so he could take her hand again. “You okay?” He wondered how much she could perceive from the broadcast.

What’s the deal with these sourpusses? No wonder Valerie needed to get some air. She was stuck between R.B.F and this douchebag. And why is he calling that girl ‘Red’ of all things? The chick is a blonde! He shot a glare at Ismael on their way to the spa, deciding that he would definitely confront the guy about what his problem was with him.

Once inside, Kaleb was glad the group had been given their own area. Sure, he’d still attempt to keep his status as a human below the radar, but the circumstance would allow everyone to speak freely on all other matters. Occupations, motivations, and demeanors were something he could log into the character profiles he’d mentally create for each person in his company. He could have dipped into the hot pools, but showering in a stall was far more pressing. Soap, shampoo… Where’s everything else? Conditioner, cleanser, moisturizer… and this thing doesn’t even exfoliate! Kaleb sighed as more steam than normal billowed from his shower stall. He begrudgingly used what was available and continued his quick shower so he could get slime guts out of his scalp. Kaleb’s hair meant everything to him.

“Fuck it, whatever.” He grumbled just before he heard Ismael address him.

“Hey sorry for the bad introduction. My name is Ismael.” Kaleb rapidly blinked a few times in disbelief at the man’s tone. He wondered why someone would put on an act before realizing he was mentally the pot calling the kettle, metal.

“Ismael, huh? Nice to meet the real you. Or at least I hope this is the real you.” He chuckled before making his way to the pool. He took the spot on the right of Arn and the left of Kharne. To get comfortable, he put his back against the wall of the pool so he could rest his arms up across the edge of it. He had just entered in time to hear Arn introducing himself and… Don’t simp to the princess so earlyyy. We just met her. He fought the urge to roll his eyes. He was ready to speak next when Saoirse spoke. That is exactly when he realized the R.B.F. wasn’t just some front or an unfortunate shaping of her face. In this instance, the book was exactly what was on the cover.
Talk too much? Main character? Kaleb turned his head so fast with a questioning look.

“Listen up, main character. No one asked you to be here with us. And if we’re going to be honest, the only time when someone like you… Yes, I’ve heard enough about you…” He waved his index finger around in her direction for emphasis. “The only time when someone like you is the ‘main character’ is either on a casting couch or a cheap fifty-minute YouTube documentary.” Kaleb held
both hands out and looked around at the rest of the group as if to show that there was nothing more to say.

“Come on, let’s keep up the introductions. What’s your background, big guy?” Kaleb pointed to Kharne. “And what are your thoughts on princess Annya?”

It felt like the weight of the world pressed against Lorenzo’s back. He couldn’t dream of raising himself from the floor. Not now. Now when he and his daughter could be sentenced to death by the king who ventured across the wide sea. Perhaps if he allowed all of the tears to leave him, he might be able to face the Sultan, maybe even with pride… Even, he knew deep down that was impossible. Right now, he just wanted to disappear. Vanish from the ballroom. Vanish from the world. But…

The supple embrace against his body reminded him why he couldn't allow that, even if it were possible. Lottie... He couldn’t leave her, especially when she expressed her perseverance. She had faith in him that he didn’t have for himself. The young woman didn’t deserve him. Not as a father. To be tied to someone so awful was a curse, and it had not even been by blood!

If I died today, would she have a better life? Sure she would be sad at the start but in time… in time she would grow and blossom without an ugly black thorn protruding from her stem. A thorn that would leave untouched and unwanted. Perhaps dying in this court won’t be so bad. Maybe, just maybe my suffering would finally come to an end. I only hope it is a swift honorable Sultan. I only hope that there isn’t too much blood. That there aren’t too many tears. That… I don’t embarrass my precious Charlotte any further. He balled his hands into fists, awaiting the Sultan’s verdict.

“Duke Lorenzo, you have humiliated myself and my family. This is something we do not take lightly and if this were in my court things would be ending very differently. We are not, however, so I must honor the court we are in. That being said, this is the judgment I pass on to you. While my family resides here in Caesonia, you shall come to the castle once a week…” His stern face transformed into a small smile as he knew his next words would be unexpected. “And you shall have dinner with my family and I.”

Lorenzo heaved a deep exhale as he had been holding his breath while hanging onto every single word the Sultan said. Dinner… Dinner? Lorenzo’s head craned up with a bewildered expression, his face and eyes still red from his sobbing. He didn’t know what to think about this. He wondered if the Sultan Raif Kadir was deceiving him before giving the true punishment but nothing else followed.

“Th-thank you, Sultan. I-I am honored. You shall… You shall not regret this.” He sobbed once more in gratitude before hearing the voice of the woman who had berated him the most after the horrific incident he had caused.

"Dignity and pride aren't things that are given to you, nor they are something that you are born with and can't be lost or taken away. They are things one must earn and conquer. Both with their words and their actions." Lorenzo was afraid of this woman, yet he found her words to be constructive rather than destructive to him. Why was she giving him this? Why were these people sparing him?

"Raise your head. Understand and accept your mistakes and face the consequences for them with dignity and pride. Nobody will ever respect you, Duke Vikena, if you don't learn to respect yourself first. I don't want to see such a pathetic sight again, are we clear?"

Her words… Harsh, but so familiar. Haunting almost. Looked up as demanded, hoping to see the face of his late wife Emina, but instead caught sight of the bronze-skinned young woman that had been so harsh to him. He remained silent in her presence. He owed the woman that after the awfulness he had caused. He knew the woman was hurt by his actions, even if she reacted with such ire. It was the product of her feelings, and he would respect that.

"With that said, regardless of this 'punishment' that was decided for you..." She walked closer to him until she was just a few steps away from him. "There won't be a second time, Duke Vikena. You should be very mindful of your words around me and my siblings..." She said, looking directly into his eyes before she turned away. She would never know it, but he gave an assuring nod to her backside. If Lorenzo sought to keep his head, he’d have to do more than believe he was a better man… he’d have to be a better man. How could he accomplish what a year’s absence from the royal court could not?

"If I may be candid, Your Grace, it may be in your best interest to wash up a little." The gentle voice of Count Hendrix was accompanied by a handkerchief of the purest white. He blinked up at the count for a moment, surprised by the man’s kindness.

“Charlotte…” His voice was but a whisper. “Charlotte.” His volume was raised now. “Thank you. I will be fine… We will be fine.” He turned his head to his daughter with a forced smile on his red tear-filled face. He then turned his head towards Count Hendrix once more and grasped the handkerchief with a nod. “Thank you. I-I needed this.” He said just before wiping his cheeks and nose with the cloth. As he did so, he proceeded to pick himself up from the marble floor. “I can have this cleaned off if you’d like.” Lorenzo offered as he held the used handkerchief up. His face still showed defeat, but it was dreary now thanks to the count, Charlotte, the Sultan, and even his ferocious daughter, Mayet.
